If there's any good news on this front, it's that the absurdity of many of these stories has prompted something of a backlash.
Zero tolerance policies are bad, willy-nilly expulsions are bad, abjectly racial policies are bad-but federal education mandates are also (often) bad.
School policies prohibit "lookalike weapons" as well as real ones, even though no one was ever shot to death by a pastry.
Making a giant octopus is way more enlightening than taking the SAT or Sociology 101.
