You may have seen his 2015 piece "We Got on Grindr at CPAC" in which he used the gay social networking app to talk to gay conservatives at the event. The Advocate called the video one of the "highlights of the conference" and it became a 2015 finalist for a Western Publishing Association MAGGIE award. His piece, "Juggalos vs. the FBI: Why the Fans of Insane Clown Posse are Not a Gang," explored why the music fans are misunderstood as criminals. The video was declared "dope" by Insane Clown Posse on Twitter, a high honor in Detrick's book.
Detrick was honored for investigative reporting for his piece "L.A. County Sheriffs Hassle Photographer, Trample Constitution, Get Lauded by Bosses." The piece was a 2013 finalist for a MAGGIE award and was the winner of a 2013 Southern California Journalism Award for best investigative television news piece. The piece takes a look at First Amendment rights in the wake of the "war on terrorism" and local law enforcement's new role in suspicious activity reporting.
Detrick studied political science and english at the University of California, Irvine, and is originally from Lakewood, California.
