Obama Power Grab; N.Y. Times Green Jobs Lunacy; High Speed Fail, and More: PM Links
Obama empire? "[A]n extraordinary and entirely unprecedented power grab by President Obama that defies centuries of practice and the legal advice of his own Justice Department" is how House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) describes the president's recess appointment – before the Senate has actually recessed – of Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Unfazed, Obama is also likely to make recess appointments of a union lawyer, a Labor Department apparatchik and a Republican NLRB lawyer to the National Labor Relations Board. Meanwhile, First Lady Michelle Obama tells iCarly cast she enjoys being called "Your Excellency."
"Electability" defined downward: Mitt Romney enjoys tie in Iowa Caucus, basks in kudos from John McCain (who clobbered him in 2008 before being slaughtered in turn by Barack Obama).
Does the New York Times editorial board read newspapers? In New Year-plus-one editorial, Grey Lady pretends 2011 never happened, promises 60,000 new jobs from Solyndra loan guarantee program, invites mockery.
Another high-speed rail report will have to be buried: California High Speed Rail Peer Review Group recommends withholding bonds from the hopeless project. The borderline-illegal lowballing of HSR costs before a 2008 referendum has more people calling for a new referendum.
Battle of the dull, risk-avoiding centrists: PBS president responds after Romney calls for defunding public broadcasting. Jesse Walker on the history of CPB-funding theater.
Torre fury: Longtime manager Joe Torre and Grove developer Rick Caruso team up in bid to take over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Who would you take as your starting QB next weekend: Obama or Tebow?
Did someone say "QE"?
Um, I'll take the guy who doesn't bowl like it's the special olympics.
That doesn't answer your question, does it?
Come on now, that's not fair. When have you ever seen Tebow bowl?
He bowled pretty well at UF.
Correct answer: Jamarcus Russell. He's pretty much the combination of Obama and Tebow.
And exactly how many wickets did either of them hit last season at Ashes?
The Great Paulie Krugnuts
That seems to be the problem, Mr. Krugman has forgotten more economics than I will ever know.
"Meanwhile, First Lady Michelle Obama tells iCarly cast she enjoys being called "Your Excellency.""
The only thing she's excellent at is having a ginormous ass, fucked-up morals, and a petty, treasonous tyrant for a husband. 'Your Excellency' indeed.
I missed that the first time. Jesus christ, what an ego.
She is an endless fountain of bad quotes and stories. I guess Obama and his handlers are to scared of her to tell her to stay out of the press.
Actually, she was excellent at collecting a fat paycheck for a job to which she seldom showed up. People forget that. But I don't.
Also she's good at spending a lot of our money on vacation.
Who is this peaseant?
Not sure, but damn is he revolting.
I hate the attack her because she's a democrat game -it is teh stupid.
Facts or STFU
one time i caught a bee in my hands and i went to show mama the bee in my hands but instead it was a duck and it got real mad.
don't forget those fucking belts. really lady, wearing a belt just below your tits wont make you look skinny.
She used to have a great figure, but it's all behind her now.
What you did there, I am viewing it.
Something tells me that part of the script wasn't written sarcastically.
Electability is 3800 more votes than Ron Paul gets.
Really puts things in perspective, doesn't it? And shows how useless the media really is.
At least the media can be confident that, because Ron Paul didn't win, the Caucuses are still relevant.
Right. Observer-based reality.
But NDAA and SOPA are just fine and dandy. Fuck partisan hackery.
I really don't get this whole Republican obsession with public broadcasting. Isn't it good to have a media entity that reacts to what we the people want instead of what corporate advertisers want? Isn't it good to have lots of tested education programming instead of just gibberish that promotes nothing of value? Isn't it good to have an objective news source free from any influence?
I know they just want nothing but a thousand Fox News and 700 Club clones but I don't see how that is in the best interests of the country.
to what we the people want
And just what % of "we the people" want to actually watch it?
That's why we need public broadcasting to produce it, the corporate media won't so it's the only way to make sure that it's actually on the air for people to watch.
You could go make a web show right now with a relatively small budget. What are you waiting for? You apparently know what the people want. You can even run it as a non-profit if you want!
I'm not claiming to know what the people want, I'm advocating for continuing a system that provides the people with what they want.
Did you read that before you posted it?
I think that comes in as an 'anti-tautology':
"I don't know X, but Y is doing X."
I'm not claiming to know what the people want, I'm advocating for continuing a system that provides the people with what they want.
Then yank the subsidies. Because if it's what the people truly want, then it'll thrive on its own just fine, right?
I'm not claiming to know what the people want, I'm advocating for continuing a system that provides the people with what they want.
Right, because a medium that sells people stuff isn't providing what people want. Whereas one that takes something from me is giving me exactly what I want. Because I can't get enough of Garrison Keillor reading from the Farmer's Almanac...
They are just as biased as the corporate media, though sometimes just more subtle. During the 2008 presidential campaign the McNeil/Lehrer show would have on a representative of the Obama and McCain campaigns. The interviewer would ask the person from the Obama campaign a question then the person from the McCain campaign. The person from the Obama campaign was then given a chance to respond but the McCain representative was never given the same courtesy. The result; the Obama representative was given twice as much time to say what candidate Obama "stood" for and was allowed to be the first and last to respond to a question. This happened repeatedly.
That's why we need public broadcasting to produce it, the corporate media won't
They are the corporate media. As in Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Do you consider the NEA, NAACP or NRA "corporations" as well? Because they are.
B-
You didn't stick the landing.
You must be the Polish judge.
Uh. Just who appointed you spokesman for "we the people"? If you want NPR, send them your donation dollars. (They are just as tax deductible as your donation to the Save the Children Fund.)
I'm not the spokesman, I'm just saying that it represents what we want. I'm not deciding, we all are.
Oh, really.
How, exactly, is this deciding being done?
Don't ask me. I don't know shit. But I think we should do what we the people want. By which I mean, what I want. Or whatever. Fuck, I dunno. Shit. Goddamn corporations. Fuck.
"I don't know shit. "
which you have effectively proven, over and over
Indeed, and who are these unwashed rabble trying to get betwixt me and my Masterpiece Theatre?
And, my God. The smell! Would it hurt these people to bathe?
Yee Haw!
*faints*
I'm not the spokesman, I'm just saying that it represents what we want.
I'm just speaking for myself here, but Caillou sure as fuck doesn't represent what I want to watch.
Advertisers follow the viewers not the other way around you moron.
No need to get vulgar. That's not true either, advertisers have lots of power look at what companies like Lowe's are trying to do to that Muslim show. Without advertisers nobody produces the shows so they're beholden. That's why you see Pepsi cans and Toyota cars and other stuff in TV shows.
Public broadcasting works because it takes the advertisers completely out of the equation and leaves just a partnership between the local stations and their communities.
If it works why does it need tax dollars to keep it going? I mean, Solyndra "worked" right up until it ran out of taxpayer dough.
Bottom line is it is unnecessary - especially in this age.
It is irrelevant how the advertisers fund the program. If the show doesn't get viewers it will fail. The consumers (that's us)have all of the power in deciding what shows are successful. Just because you or I or anybody don't like what other people choose to watch doesn't mean we are being oppressed by the advertisers.
There are thousands of television stations and internet media sites. If you can't find anything you like then go read a book.
That is not true at all. I do not wish to have The Apprentice on the air but it doesn't matter because GE can avoid their taxes and give $100 million to Trump and Pepsi can throw in another $100 million and so on, keeping the show on the air. And forced onto the entire nation.
With public broadcasting you get a series of representative officials who can take the concerns of the community into account and make sure that the local station is providing the programming that the community wants to see rather than what a bunch of rich CEOs can sell.
Forced?
Somehow my set can be tuned to channels other than those carrying Trump's vanity show. My attention, and my dollars, go elsewhere. I'm **forced** to pay for Big Bird.
GE is a friend to progressives everywhere. I will not have you besmirching its good name. Off to indefinite detention for you!
Exactly who is forcing you to watch The Apprentice? If you don't see something you like, read a book, watch a movie, or even better, argue with strangers on the internet. But don't force other people to pay for something for you to watch on TV when you have hundreds of other options.
I used to watch the Apprentice . . .
wait for it . . .
but then I took an arrow to the knee.
What happened, did somebody steal your sweetroll?
What happened, did somebody steal your sweetroll?
I lvl'd my Sneak when I took it.
i am STILL fucking LOVING skyrim!
PBS in the 1960's when she had no competition. Now that was an era of true freedom when the people had total control!
Don't you mean the BBC, Mr. Wanker?
I've never watched a single minute of The Apprentice. You lack of self control is your problem.
Sell to who you fucking idiot? That's right "the community." People watch that drivel because they like it.
You are just ashamed of your terrible choice in entertainment and want the government to save you from yourself.
That's the flaw in you libertarians' logic. No man is an island, however much you may wish it were otherwise. My stupidity is OUR problem.
We're not ants, either.
God, every time some liberal - or con - uses that "island" analogy, it makes me want to tear my spleen out and beat myself to death with it.
Have you WATCHED PBS LATELY?
"This Old House" has 10 minutes of ads.
"This Old House" has 10 minutes of ads.
You mean when they're not showing him swing his Estwing hammer, drive screws with his DeWalt drill, cut boards with his DeWalt Table Saw or use his Porter Cable router?
Product placement? In my PBS?
I always wanted them to do a porn movie based on This Old House. Ron Jeremy could play Bob Vila and go from room to room "fixing" things. "What are you banging on in the dining room Bob?"
You could call it This Old Whore House.
Isn't that the basic premise for every repairman-porn film ever made?
Jackie Treehorn would like a word with you.
Of course, but I think Ron Jeremy actually IS Bob Vila. That's what makes it funny.
Your Norm Abram fetish is sickening.
I call spoofer.
Public broadcasting works because it takes the advertisers completely out of the equation and leaves just a partnership between the local stations and their communities. forces others to subsidize things that I like to watch.
FTFY
Are you high? Public broadcasting in no way "takes advertisers completely out of the equation". They just change the format and the timing of the advertisements.
As an example, NPRs own website says this: "NPR sponsors receive on-air acknowledgement for their financial support via ten second announcements that are broadcast during NPR programs."
That's completely different, those are entities, usually non-profit, that have recognized the quality of the programming and wish to contribute. They are not trying to use the programming to make even more obscene profits and force even more advertising down our throats.
Hey shit-for-brains, take a look at this PDF and tell me which of those are non-profit.
Holy crap. Pabst Brewing Company sponsors NPR to the tune of 500k-1 megabuck.
Scratch that...just 1/4-1/2 of a megabuck.
PBS, PBR, same difference.
Shockingly, Adrian seems to have disappeared after this dismantling.
And here we have the crux of it. PBS could be non-stop exposes of transgendered cheese molds and the Left would swoon because it's the only thing that is mandated, not voluntary.
Wait, you wouldn't swoon over those cheese molds?
Maybe a nice gorgonzola...
So Sears, who used to be mentioned at the end of every single episode of Sesame Street, is a non-profit now? Just because they don't make money doesn't mean they're a non-profit.
So Sears...is a non-profit now? Just because they don't make money doesn't mean they're a non-profit.
I just blew a funny fuse.
And, as mentioned below, there isn't a single show on PBS that doesn't have corporate sponsorship that is prominently mentioned.
Yeah, but that's different because... 'cause I said so. So, there.
Yeah, you never see this kind of stuff in real life.
No need to get vulgar.
You've picked the wrong forum to try to make the case that the rest of us should be forced, at gunpoint, to subsidize your viewing tastes.
Lovely, delicate trolling - like a fly fisherman making just the right presentation.
Perhaps I graded too harshly above.
Lovely, delicate trolling - like a fly fisherman making just the right presentation.
Worthy of airing on PBS itself.
That was a mega-trolling by one of the regulars. They even felt sorry a few times for how well it was working and dropped persona. Alas, it was ignored, as the troll had by then taken on a life of it's own.
To whomever was running that thing: Show no mercy in the future. It was a good job, and we need foils here.
That is why I like the fly fishing analogy - the art is in the cast, the presentation of the fly - even if you don't actually fool the fish. Of course in this case, the fish bit with all the elan of a school of piranha.
You dick.
+1/4 internet.
Lowe's is pulling it's advertising because it thinks more of it's customers will not want to see the show than do.
Advertisers can and do support shows that "the people" want to watch.
"That's not true either,"
Yes, it makes perfect sense that advertisers would insist people watch shit they don't want to watch...
Seriously, are you the dumbest fucking troll ever?
"takes the advertisers completely out of the equation"
You have *got* to be shitting me!
Have you *seen* the corporate sponsorship messages before and after the programs? If that's not advertising, then what on earth is?
What viewers EVER wanted this?
This was more of a parent force feeding brussel sprouts to their child.
The old-school Electric Company used to have a character named "Crank", though I suspect these days that wouldn't fly due to the methamphetamine insinuation.
"""Isn't it good to have a media entity that reacts to what we the people want instead of what corporate advertisers want?""
Have you actually watched PBS? They don't put anything on unless it sponsored by some corporation.
Beat me to it, I see.
And for those who want(ed) NASA TV during ISS construction. I know on my plan you can shell out a little money and buy the channel. It's called supply and demand.
Logically the conclusion when Congress votes to defund NPR is that what we the people want is not to have NPR.
Isn't it good to have a media entity that reacts to what we the people want instead of what corporate advertisers want?
ya, that's called Fox News. It's pretty boring, when its not infuriatingly partisan.
you add nothing to the forum
kill yourself, or just stop posting
Your post lacks substance and I'm reasonably sure I make more than you do. Die in a fire.
Oh, and Fox is a direct reaction to what the idiot consumers of television news want, otherwise it wouldn't exist. So who is the idiot again?
Where does that leave MSNBC viewers?
they are both very happy with the product they consume too.
Bob. Fucking. Ross.
That's all I ever wanted from them, and they just couldn't pick a fucking timeslot (or air it at all some weeks).
A Grand Ole' Fuck You to you, PBS.
And by the way, is the 700 Club still on the air?
Pat Robertson's people pay to have it shown on the CBS affiliate here in Austin. I saw it over the holidays, preceded by a 15-20 second message of "The following is a paid program. All editorial content is by the sponsor and not by KEYE-TV. Stop sending us angry letters about this program."
I literally just laughed out loud. Have you ever watched PBS? They DO run commercials and every single one of them is for high end products that you rarely even see on regular channels. I don't remember the last time I saw a Cartier, or Rolex commercial on NBC or Fox.
Technically those are underwriters, not commercials. And they only happen between programs, not in the middle like on the rest of TV.
"Isn't it good to have a media entity that reacts to what we the people want instead of what corporate advertisers want?"
False dichotomy. Even if we stipulate the commoercial media does only what corporate sponsors want, what reason do you have to believe that public broadcaster are reflecting the people's wants instead of those of the political class?
There's far more statist propaganda on privately owned networks like ABC, NBC, and CBS than on PBS. The CPB generally maintains a healthy separation from the government.
I mean, I'll take the NewsHour formerly known as MacNeil-Lehrer over any of the big three's nightly news broadcasts or the cable news drivel.
The issue isn't quality or content. It's the fact that our tax dollars are used against our will to subsidize it. Period. Full stop.
Yes, that's problematic. Though most of the budget doesn't come from govt sources but from viewers like YOU.
most != all.
The airwaves aren't there for "the best interests of the country", outside of emergency information.
Having said that, I give a shit if NPR and PBS continue to exist. I'd be fine with that, provided they are weaned completely off taxpayer support. Not one thin penny.
Until George w Bush is swinging at the end of a rope I don't want to hear about Obama.
How about a package deal?
Winner.
I hear Guantanamo is lovely this time of year.
GDI, who are you? >:|
From the linked NYT editorial:
I gather that they don't read their own financial pages (or front page). They might have noticed that Europe is having a slight bit of financial difficulty right now.
Also, many of those subsidies are being jettisoned right now in order to keep the various European governments afloat.
Let's face it, this isn't the first time the NYT has been caught with its head up it's ass. Thank God, too, because the mockery we get to engage in is delicious.
This isn't even the first time in the past week the NYT has been caught with it's head up it's ass. See the scare story on concealed carry that presented evidence that holders of CCL's were more law abiding than the average.
Hi, I'm an apostrophe. When you misuse me, a baby panda dies. Please stop this senseless murder.
Not only more law abiding than the average, but also more than one of the "organizations" protesting the rise in CCW permits: Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
I don't see the problem here? Europeans have decided that their nation's energy policy won't be beholden to corporations, and good on them for it. That's why Europe is such a great country!
Excellent trolling Jim.
Yo, Adrian, Europe isn't a country.
Oh yeah? Well, maybe I would know that if you Republicans hadn't dismantled public broadcasting. As it is I'm stuck watching The Apprentice.
D-
After being corrected by a friend that you don't call the First Lady that ["Your Excellency"], Michelle Obama jumps in and says "No, no, I kind of like it."
Ah, but can she *spell* it?
Seriously, bring this kind of stuff on.
Torre fury: Longtime manager Joe Torre and Grove developer Rick Caruso team up in bid to take over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Caruso eh? Well then, I don't think LA will be able to dodge (removes sunglasses) this bullet.
Yyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
Caruso, eh? Despite being a rent-seeking, eminent domain abusing POS, he may just be able to pull this off. Of course, say goodbye to Dodger Stadium, and hello to "Downtown North at Chavez Ravine", a shopping experience. Large retail and entertainment complex with condos and a luxury hotel. The Dodger's will instead play downtown at Farmer's Field.
Fuckin' joke handles...
Which one is the joke handle?
Roger Daltrey was the joke handle.
The Dodger's will instead play downtown at Farmer's Field.
Maybe, just maybe if they can get through all of the bureaucracy in LA city, LA County, the State of CA and the US EPA they'll be playing there by 2020. But I wouldn't hold my breath.
In New Year-plus-one editorial, Grey Lady pretends 2011 never happened...
That was pretty much the same with Obama's "jobs bill" back in September. It was more of the same that had already failed miserably. It seems to be an epidemic with a certain type, to keep trying the same thing over and over, failing to learn from past experience (or even acknowledge that past experience).
Do you think statists *learn*? Hell no!!! And try something new? "The horror, the horror."
And that's even giving them the benefit of the doubt that their stated goal of increased employment is truly their paramount concern. For instance, buying off teachers union votes with stimulus dollars seemed likely the real end game with that fiasco.
Hey, we're just looking for any excuse to keep control over your money. Is that so wrong?
Or maybe they write a bunch of stock editorials in a binge in May, and just run one of those when they don't feel like writing a new one the rest of the year.
What an epic market failure that would be.
It's a perfect example of one. Rather than providing what everyone wants it would fall to just whoever pays the most for the programming.
Rather than highly technical shows like NOVA we would get corporate funded junk like Jersey Shore.
Right, right, Adrian. The nation should subsidize your viewing taste. Should we adress you as "yuor majesty" as well?
"To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical." - Thomas Jefferson
Saw some headline yesterday that Jersey Shore is believed to have jumped the shark.
In a free market, if there is sufficient demand for a type of program, then it will be paid for. You can pay for a subscription to PBS and donate more if you'd like.
And, if Americans want Jersey Shore more than the Science Channel, I say go Galt. Show them which philosophy is more practical.
So every channel broadcasts Jersey Shore knockoffs? Do you even watch TV? Don't Food Network, Palladia and the Discovery Channel attract advertisers? They sure seem to becasue whenever I watch those channels I never see a Jersey Shore knockoff but I do see lots of advertising.
Food Network?
Isn't Guy Fieri the sole historical example of a market failure?
Wait...Sandra Lee too!
Says you! Nobody doesn't like Sandra Lee!
benji unfortunately had his tongue bitten off by a St Bernard. He doesn't know about Ms. Lee's incomparable strawberry cheese cake. Okay. I make better, but it takes two hours less to go to the store.
Wait. Sandra Lee. Who the fuck is Sandra Lee? Thought you meant Sarah Lee.
If its that woman who made forgettable movies with Rock Hudson, I think you are confusing two thirds of America with the media. Nobody I knows watches that shit. Beach Blanket Bingo my ass. Wait. That's Peggy Lee, right? No. She was a singer.
No, she has a show called Semi-Homemade, in which she makes weird kitschy 50's food out of pre-packaged food products while drinking a lot during the course of the show. It really must be experienced rather than described.
Never mind. I was thinking of Sandra Dee.
Isn't that the guy who had that hair band
She has a chicken and rice soup recipe that starts "open three cans of Campbell's chicken and rice soup."
Of course that can't compare to Paula Deen's English Peas recipe. (I recommend looking that up and reading the reviews.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLMNZ6xY6YY
Ohhhh, her.
This is better though
Giada's jiggly bosum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
I'm so in love with the big headed woman with the tiny body.
I'm so in love with the big headed woman with the tiny body.
I bet you're a bis Selena Gomez fan.
Giada looks like an adult. Gomez looks like she hasn't aged since she was twelve. So, Gomez doesn't really do it for me.
She's not my type, but heeere's Nigella:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/fem.....z1g4R3TOec
Certainly wouldn't turn her down, but half my female neighbors have her face or similar. I know few with anything like Giada's.
Lara Calder just totally has my number. French Food at Home is the only cooking show I will actually sit and watch.
If you're comparing Nigella and Giada's faces, you must have impressive peripheral vision.
Uh, if he's a market failure why does he have a popular Food Network show?
Because it's a joke?
Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded.
I don't know, but FN ran a marathon of his stupid ass show over the New Year holiday.
ESPN must've put them up to it.
FN ran a marathon of his stupid ass show over the New Year holiday.
I think it's a conspiracy to make people spend more time with their families.
Or to boost holiday DVD sales/rentals.
"Uh, if he's a market failure why does he have a popular Food Network show?"
The relevant question is why does he go to so much effort to adhere to styling choices that went out 10 years ago.
He bleaches his fucking soul patch...
On point!
Funding for Nova is provided by David H. Koch
vvvvvvvvv
>> KABOOM
I always appreciate when sound effects are artfully translated to text.
I know, right? When he (come on, you ain't buying it) mentioned NOVA as an example of a program without corporate sponsored influence, he had to be a troll.
NPR does not provide what everyone wants; it provides what a few people want and government lets it pick the pocket of everybody to pay for it. Advertisers want viewers; they buy commercial spots on the highest ranking shows they can afford that attract their target market. Viewers decide what shows are popular, not the advertisers. A free market approach is the best chance for satisfying most of the people. The ever-increasing number of channels means that even niche audiences will be served. I choose to watch The Universe on the Discovery channel; you choose to watch The Apprentice. How is that the evil advertisers' faults?
Shows like: consumer reporting.
NOVA could be sold to the Science Channel. And imagine the bids for Sesame Street. We could probably pay for NPR and PBS another whole year with the final bid.
Yeah the Science Channel already does stuff like NOVA.
Do you mean similar stuff or things including NOVA? I've never seen NOVA on Science, to the best of my memory.
"stuff" being shows that are similar to NOVA.
You have to pay big bucks to get the Science Channel, so it's not really a replacement for NOVA on PBS.
I remember when Discovery Channel used to run science shows, but like everything else they became slaves to ratings and now are the Reality Show Channel.
If people want Hillbilly Handfishing, people are going to get Hillbilly Handfishing.
Bear Grylls drinking his own urine is only a novelty for so long.
Because Sesame Street won't sell ads only slightly south of the price of Super Bowl air time.
Santorum Surge Brings Ethics Questions
Rick Santorum's powerful finish in the Iowa caucus is bringing fresh attention to his tenure in Congress, including ethics questions that dogged him about a preferred mortgage he received from a bank run by campaign donors, and federal funds that went to a real estate developer who backed his charity.
One of the top donors to Santorum's charity was also the beneficiary of an $8 million Santorum-sponsored federal earmark, according to published reports. Melanie Sloan, a former federal prosecutor who filed an ethics complaint against Santorum in 2006 on behalf of a watchdog group, said her organization's website received a tidal wave of visitors in the past 24 hours, and in an interview she said she believes people will discover that the GOP presidential contender is "hardly the moral paragon he purports to be."...
ethics questions that dogged him about a preferred mortgage he received from a bank run by campaign donors
I stand completely behind my good friend and colleague.
With my pants down my ankles and a steak house hostess between us as he forces himself and his tiny penis on her. Oh, wait. I'm thinking of my good friend Ted. Never mind.
"[A]n extraordinary and entirely unprecedented power grab by President Obama that defies ... the legal advice of his own Justice Department"
Sheesh, do you expect him to listen to the DOJ after that Fast and Furious fiasco?
You know what's fun but also apparently gets you in trouble? Repeatedly answering "santorum" to a serious of work-related questions being asked by your co-worker, and pointing to the definition of "santorum" on the google search.
It'll be the lunatic santorum for you, Son!
Wow, dude. That sucks. So what's prison like?
In this day and age with thousands of television stations and a growing internet media market people have more power over their choice of what to watch than ever before. The idea that we need a government station to ensure "the people" get to watch what they want is absurd.
We need it more than ever. With consolidation of networks into giant corporations through the chase for profits we have lost the local stations that support our communities.
Your local news might not even be produced in your city but instead a package of clips made a thousand miles away.
Public broadcasting is accountable to the community rather than whoever has the deepest pockets and makes sure that the programming that is appropriate for the community makes air as the first priority.
OK, asshole. Now you've got me pissed off. Here we go:
We need it more than ever. With consolidation of networks into giant corporations through the chase for profits we have lost the local stations that support our communities.
How many fucking channels do you have now in relation to 20 years ago? 40 years ago?
Your local news might not even be produced in your city but instead a package of clips made a thousand miles away.
I've lived in loads of places, and have never once seen this scenario play out. If you could please cite a city where this happens, I'll be shocked. But I'm demanding it. Also, wouldn't that lend to a network producing local news? Their ratings would be sky high, since people are clamoring for it. Hell, they could get Super Bowl money for their commercials!
Public broadcasting is accountable to the community rather than whoever has the deepest pockets and makes sure that the programming that is appropriate for the community makes air as the first priority.
Have you ever, once in your life, seen a local news broadcast on public TV? The % of locally produced content on public television is no higher than that of private broadcast companies. I would challenge you to support your claim with a link or two for this as well.
God knows I live in one of the most marginal media markets in the country (total population of the entire viewing area can't be more than 300,000, probably less) but we actually have our TV station with reporters and news shows and everything.
I'll see your margin and raise you Tallahassee. The "news" could be 10 minutes shorter when our semi-pro football team isn't playing.
I see stuff from local schools a lot of the time on the "Government Access" channel, but on PBS, hardly ever.
Oh dude, I wish I could get a trout to rise to the bait like you just did.
I'd wager that it's lower. NPR, anyway, is chock full of PRI, APR, and other content-houses who produce stuff in one place and distribute it to member stations.
WGBH does a lot of PBS' stuff, which gets sent EVERYWHERE.
The only local shit on Cleveland's NPR station that I'm aware of is the fucking Slovenian Hour on weekends and other ethnic music that only gets play on off hours. News, too.
Kent's station plays almost exclusively classical music when not running farmed-out shit from PRI and other content houses.
So you admit you hate Slovenians?
they don't cheat like Serbs.
I am a Slovenian, but the Slovenian Hour is less polka than it should be. Frankie Yankovic is under-represented.
And you're damn right that the Serbs cheat. Serbs also like to fight over nothing. Slovenians are much more mellow.
You think government sector media consolidation is OK?
I listen to quite a bit of public broadcasting from Europe, and it's amazing how biased and narrow the stuff is, catering to the interests of the Media Class and the Metropolitan Political Class. The idea that anybody could oppose the EU Superstate, for example, is anathema. Multiculturalism (which always seems to mean the local culture gives way to third world immigrant cultures) is a shibboleth, too, and it's considered perfectly normal that suggestions multiculturalism isn't working should be suppressed.
And you don't want to see Germany's reporting on nuclear power.
Public broadcasting works because it takes the advertisers completely out of the equation and leaves just a partnership between the local stations and their communities.
And the 5 people watching the show.
This comment is more entertaining than anything on PBS.

Well, duh.
He isn't already? I for one welcome our new insect overlords.
Like those clean energy jobs that are putting light bulbs that qualify as toxic waste in every home?
That's a two-fer, considering the HAZMAT team that will be required to remove them!
And imagine the bids for Sesame Street.
Sesame Street is a massive capitalist cash cow based on govt subsidized air time.
Take away the subsidy, sell the whole franchise. Then it's a capitalist cash cow based on capitalist funded air time.
Trust me: Sesame Street ain't what it used to be. With Nick Jr, Noggin and Discovery Kids, fewer and fewer people are relying on Sesame Street.
One main reason is they overt political message. It turns anybody on the right away. They have gay and transsexual muppets on there now, for crying out loud. There's a whole contingent of intolerant people out there that will balk immediately at this. And the socialism they preach is another reason people are tuning out. It's one thing to tell kids they should share. it's another to say taking from others is fair. Sesame Street has gotten to that point now, and it's driving people away.
Also, a lot of the content on the other channels is just better educationally and more fun to watch. Lots of parents will sit around and watch an episode of "Blues Clues" with their kids because it's not bad entertainment.
Wait, did you say transsexual muppets? WTF?
They do get fisted for a living.
^win
That was meant to be in scare quotes.
Give me a break, dude. I'm running a 102 degree fever.
Forgot the rubber again, eh?
They've always had gay Muppets (Bert and Ernie).
I will never forget Barbara Boxer using SS puppets when the Congressional class of '94 talked about cutting PBS. "The Republicans want to kill big bird" was the basic theme. Even then, almost 20 years ago, SS was making tens of millions a year. You couldn't kill Elmo if you fucking wanted to do so.
I thought you meant Nazi puppets the first time I read that...
It's not so far-fetched after all.
What the hell is that thing around Kermit's neck supposed to be? Is he the result of a cross-species union between a frilled lizard and a frog?
You gotta admit, Nazi Puppets would be much snappier.
SS Puppets, now there's a show I would watch.

Her "ex" died of cancer on Christmas, bright boy.
Little girl, I saw her interview, and heard the 911 tape...we'll see if the recently widowed + new mama + matter-of-factly asking the 911 operator about shooting the B&E actor + giving an emotionless TV interview is normal.
It's **not** normal, it's cool, calm and collected. If it's an "ex," he wasn't up to any good and deserved every pellet.

"The Last Song" Ah yes, the coming of age story. Only this time, the writers got it right, and Julie Anne Robinson nailed it in her directorial debut. You know a lot of this already: rebellious teenage girl...falls in love...other side of the tracks...blah, blah, blah. But with superb acting by Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear (tell me the guy's not one of the best character actors out there), the introduction of the powerful Liam Hemsworth to American audiences, and solid supporting performances by Kelly Preston, and the budding Bobby Coleman, you can't help but feel moved.
Say what you want about Miley Cyrus, but the girl can act. And her buttery-smooth southern drawl just sweeps you off your feet. Even as an angsty teen that's way too emotional (as if we all weren't really that way when we were that age), she lights up the screen with her presence as Ronnie. Well, Ronnie (a piano prodigy) and her brother, Jonah, go to live with their father ( a former concert pianist and Juliard instructor), who has been gone for a few years, at his reclusive beach home (the town shuns him because he burned down a church) on Tybee Island, GA. Immediately, she runs into Will, a local boy with a shy and caring demeanor. She proceeds to insult him, making him all the more intrigued by her. And when he goes out to her house to protect some tortoise eggs, she's immediately smitten by him. We see glimpses of her feelings, but being a 17 year old girl whose dad abandoned her a few years before, she's obviously having a hard time trusting him. Ultimately, they fall in love, much to the chagrin of his well-to-do parents, who are dealing with the death of Will's brother in a car accident. Their expectations are for Will to go to Vanderbildt (one hole in the story, since no Savannahan would send their kid anywhere out of state except to maybe Clemson or USC), but he wants to live his own life. Only, he can't, because he knows the pain it will cause his parents after the loss of their other son.
As her romance starts to blossom, Ronnie begins to have a renewed faith in the world. She opens up to her father and brother. She is more confident in herself and her abilities, and begins to play the piano again. All is right with the world...until her dad is stricken down with teh cancer. He's dying and they know it.
Well, predictably, Ronnie is shattered. Her faith gone, she knows she has to be strong for her little brother, who is crushed by the impending loss of his father. Obviously, she needs Will more than ever...but, Will has a secret. He and a friend were drinking behind the church that night, and were playing with fire. As it turns out, they burned the church down and caused her father to be ostracized by the town. This revelation is too much for Ronnie to take. The reverts into her shell once more, incapable of consolation by her mother, her brother or even her father. But her father begs her to help him finish a piece he is writing, and convinces her to finish it as he sits in the other room. As she tearfully completes the composition, he dies, happy that he was able to get her daughter back into what she loves.
At the funeral, she plays the composition in an emotional release that will allow her to go on with her life, confident in herself and reassured of the love her father always had for her. And when she sees Will afterward, a flood of emotions overcome them both and they profess their love (in 2 different scenes-that would have been crass at a funeral). She will, after all, attend Juliard. And Will, seeing what is truly important, will leave Vandy and will attend Columbia the next semester to be with her.
So there you have it. A truly fine movie, and a great coming-out for Miley Cyrus, as she sheds the Hanna Montana chains that had been constricting her abilities.
That is literally the worst movie review I have ever read. You are a shit-stain on the fabric of humanity, and if you had one once of courage or even a fraction of a testicle, you would gargle with broken glass, you disgusting, worthless, POS motherfucker. You are a taint on the reputation of all H&R commenters, and I don't mean strictly in the sense of your sheer stupidity reflecting badly on everyone else. You are literally the the personification of the area between the anus and ballsack. Eat shit and die, asshole.

Pentagon to unveil plan guiding big spending cuts
http://www.google.com/hostedne.....903215f2d6
Read: Obama will go into the Pentagon to tell his plan for cuts. The title makes it sound all professional, but really it's a partisan hack telling the military what to cut, instead of (whistfully) the military actually telling the Administration what they don't need.
Power grab? The right to make recess appointments is in the Constitution in Article II, section 2. The filibuster is not mentioned anywhere in the document.
It's the GOP that is grabbing power by refusing to allow votes on Obama's appointments, not the president for getting tired of it and filling an empty chair the GOP has said it will not fill.
So, if the Senate steps out for a cup of coffee, the President can fill whatever vacancies there are?
Which is why the Senate REALLY can't cut the coffee service they employ.
[wiggles fingers]
I think a "recess" is required to make recess appointments, Nathan.
Liberals ignore what words mean.
They also will be defending the filibuster in year. Complaining about filibusters when you have a majority in the senate is a universal sign of partisan hackery.
Obama says differently, Nathan. That it is entirely unconstitutional. Oh, wait. That was when he was a senator. And then again in '09 when his solicitor general made the argument.
So shut the hell up, you partisan hack.
The Senate has the right to make its own rules, and one of the rules it has chosen to make is the filibuster. The president can't force the Senate to change its rules to accommodate him.
Checks and balances don't mean much when a branch can act unilaterally. They also don't mean much when a certain branch with lots of people in it refuses to defend its prerogatives or to stop delegating away its power.
Um.... you can't do a recess appt if the Senate isn't in recess.
But...I mean...er....RACIST!!!

I'm sick of Alan Alda on PBS being blown away by every piece of new technology presented to him.
Fuck Alan Alda. Donald Sutherland should take him out and bash his head in with a concrete block for taking the name of Hawkeye and making it synonymous with "whiny leftist bitch."
For that matter, so should the entire state of Iowa.
Hawkeye came from Last of the Mohicans, not Iowa.
Well then, they should beat it on principle.
Early Alda Hawkeye was a dude. Later, he was not.

"We need it more than ever. With consolidation of networks into giant corporations through the chase for profits we have lost the local stations that support our communities.
Your local news might not even be produced in your city but instead a package of clips made a thousand miles away.
Public broadcasting is accountable to the community rather than whoever has the deepest pockets and makes sure that the programming that is appropriate for the community makes air as the first priority."
