Suspected Mass Shooter Elliot Rodger's Final Video is Chilling, Deeply Disturbed

Above is the final video of suspected mass shooter Elliot Rodger, believed to be the gunman behind the deaths of six people (seven, inlcuding himself) at University of California, Santa Barbara.

It is disturbing in the extreme. The Washington Post has a transcript, which reads like a parody of a male supremacist screed from generations ago:

Girls, all I have ever wanted was to love you and to be loved by you. I wanted a girlfriend, I wanted sex, I wanted love, affection, adoration. You think I am unworthy of it. I find it interesting that as I go through each one, the number of people killed most often hovers between 5 and 7.

I don't have any conclusion or deeper thoughts about that, but 5-7 victims seems to be about the limit before the shooter kills himself, is killed, or is stopped.

The Luby's massacre stands out as having twenty four victims. Twenty four.

And according to the woman who survived it and had the TX conceal carry laws loosened, he was shooting very slowly, and methodically. It was a bunch of unarmed people, cowering on the floor.

I focused on the PUA thing when talking about this guy yesterday, but I also think there's a case to be made that he's also a product of progtard educational practices.

Over the last fifteen years, there's been an incredible focus in educational circles on taking something that is absolutely normal - the fact that kids separate into groups based on who they like to spend their time with; i.e. the right of free association - and turn it into something to be demonized.

"Exclusion" has been made synonymous with bullying. And it's not.

So this kid was told in school for twelve years that anyone who excluded him from anything, ever, was an evil bully whose behavior was fundamentally no different from violence or the threat of physical violence.

Well, here's the kid who took that literally.

What I'll say, and I hit on this above, is that he shares some overlap with prog thinking insofar as he rejected the nature of the sexual marketplace as unfair and brutish in the same way progs, many whom are reasonable smart STEM-type people, reject the notion that in the economic marketplace, a brutish lower class man can make a fortune manufacturing the perfect toilet seat. People who find their entire self-worth wrapped into economic and material successes find that reality as rage-inducing. That he posted at PUA Hate meant he had been exposed to the PUA culture and the various game techniques. Now, he appears to be someone who lacked social calibration entirely, so it may have been doomed from the start. But he appears to know the sexual marketplace as described in PUA literature but simply rejected it (perhaps after a few unsuccessful attempts where his negs came across not as disqualifying, but rather merely petulant assholish).

I think you're spot on here. It was a status thing. He constructed a hierarchy of status and believed he should hold a particular position on the hierarchy based on money, social position. But he was completely ridged in his construct - not understanding that other elements (social skills, intellect, personality) are interwoven within it. Beyond being a category error, the problem with the concept of "mental illness" is that it lumps any sort of maladaptive behavior in with the crazy people, the evil people (sociopaths & anti-social personalities), and the people who suffer from dementia or another diagnosable brain injury.

My youngest son is diagnosed as Asperger's. He attends a school that specializes in high functioning aspies and has many aspie friends (yes, some aspies have friends!)

At this point, the whole DSM-5 is an abomination, and everything is over diagnosed including bi-polar and depression.

That said, there are a couple of commonalities for an Asperger diagnosis:

There probably isn't one specific cause other than an increased lack of empathy. I think this is rooted in the explosion of media in general, and not even with a specific causal subset (e.g. video games, movies). We are simply awash in people, faces, personalities, opinions, etc - inundated by "artificial" people we see and hear everyday. Mass media "commoditizes" people. It's the only explanation I have as to why guns have existed for centuries, mental illness throughout recorded history, and it is only a recent phenomenon to have nuts up bell towers. And is there any end to "mass media"? Of course not, the benefits so vastly out weigh any negative that could be associated with mass killings. I'm sure the pathology that produces mass killers existed prior to mass media, it just is an evolving combination - outliers that come with any reality.

Simply, we've had guns for centuries, we've had crazy people for millennia, and hyper mass-media for about 5-6 decades. If the combination of damaged people - being impacted by a tidal wave of humanity that they can't process - pick up an infinitesimal number of guns and fire upon a mass of people, it's not possible to impound all guns, kill all borderline people, pull the plug on mass medial, or forbid people gathering in masses to be group targets.
