Don't Bring Back COVID Authoritarianism
People should be free to choose how cautious to be. Mask mandates, lockdowns, and closing schools won't stop the virus.

COVID-19 cases are up. Hospitalizations climbed 24 percent last week.
But the media make everything seem scarier than it is. The headline "Up 24 Percent!" comes after dramatic lows. Hospitalizations are still less than half what they were when President Joe Biden said, "The pandemic is over."
Yet the shallow media keep pounding away: "It may be time to break out the masks," headlined CNN.
Frightened people believe. The movie studio Lionsgate reinstated an office mask mandate. Atlanta's Morris Brown College mandated masks and even banned parties.
This month, several school districts in Kentucky and Texas closed. "The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and community is a top priority," said the school superintendent in Texas.
But kids rarely get very sick from COVID, and schools aren't COVID hotspots. Studies on tens of thousands of people found "no consistent relationship between in-person K-12 schooling and the spread of the coronavirus."
A Lancet study found Florida had the 12th-fewest excess COVID deaths in the country, even though Florida students went back to school without masks relatively soon.
At least Texas' and Kentucky's closures were isolated and brief. Long-term closures during the pandemic brought America's lowest math and reading scores in decades. Florida's kids suffered less learning loss than kids in other states.
Sweden, which never closed its schools, suffered no learning loss. Sweden's education minister wrote that children were "at much lower risk of serious illness" and that "keeping children learning was vital."
Sweden also imposed fewer restrictions on adults. At the time, Sweden was mocked in the media. NBC called Sweden's openness a "failed experiment."
But Sweden's approach did work. Data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development show that Sweden had fewer excess deaths since COVID than any other European country.
Fortunately, this year, most of America seems less likely to panic.
Unfortunately, that doesn't include Facebook and its idiot authoritarian "fact-checkers." Even though the World Health Organization says kids under 5 should not be required to wear masks, Facebook still censors science writer John Tierney for writing that forcing children to wear masks is unnecessary.
Masks, lockdowns, and closing schools won't stop COVID. We have to live with it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 96.7 percent of us now have some immunity through vaccines or prior infection. That probably means future infections will be less severe.
Still, COVID continues to kill some of us.
I'm skeptical of the anti-vax messages on my social media. Unvaccinated people are five times more likely to die. Vaccines are still the most effective way to protect ourselves.
I'm also skeptical of politicians eager to use force. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis forbade private businesses from requiring customers to wear masks or have vaccinations.
But I say privately owned should mean private. A store owner should be allowed to make his own choices. If customers don't like a policy, there are lots of other businesses to patronize.
I confronted DeSantis about that:
Stossel: If it's my business, and I'm scared, and I want to have that, why can't I?
DeSantis: You had some big corporations basically imposing Fauci-ism, vax mandates, mask mandates…. So we barred [them].
Stossel: But if I have a candy store and want to say you have to stand on your head to buy my candy…
DeSantis: Yeah, but there's certain business regulations that everyone's gotta abide by.
Stossel: I'm just surprised you're pushing them.
DeSantis: Sometimes, you just gotta say, is this something that we want in our state at all? That's how we've come down.
That's how we've come down? The politician decides for everyone?
I hate that tyranny, whether it comes from DeSantis, who had mostly sensible COVID policies, or from worse repressers like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and then–New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
We individuals should get to decide what's best for us.
I'm 76. Nine in 10 COVID deaths happen people over 65.
So I'm glad I've been vaccinated. I'll get the new booster this fall.
I will wear a mask in crowded places when I travel to Chicago to speak at the Heartland Institute next week.
But that's my choice. There's a big difference between choice and force.
Individuals should decide, not politicians.

I'm making $90 an hour working from home. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is earning 16,000 US dollars a month by working on the connection, that was truly astounding for me, she prescribed for me to attempt it simply.
Everybody must try this job now by just using this website... http://www.Payathome7.com
Knowing you still wear a mask has really damaged your reputation for me.
This comment is stupid. None of us know the other person's story. The person may be wearing a mask because they under treatment for cancer or some other illness. John Stossel is in a high-risk group and he is being safe. He has a right to do that and you should not criticize. Freedom means freedom for all not just freedom for me and my ideas.
Doesn't your first sentence apply to literally every one of your posts?
That would be fair, but the info from the well they drink from has been promulgated with fear from the start. It would be nice if his decision and many other would have come from a fair start, but your point is true even though we now are affected by the unfair start.
Your comment is stupid. The only reason anyone wears a mask is to virtue signal to the hard left.
That's idiotic. I wore a mask a couple months ago because I had just had bronchitis, I sing, the wildfire smoke was really messing with my voice, and I wanted to protect it for a big gig. Assuming other peoples' motives is a huge problem and creates massive blind spots, whether you're left, right, or anything else.
Trump voters refused to comply with mask and vaccine mandates and the result was overwhelmingly greater Covid mortality. Thousands died for their right not to wear a mask or get vaccinated.
https://politicsofthelastage.blogspot.com/2022/12/update-on-covid19-mask-and-vaccine.html
Actually, the studies show that the masks are completely ineffective. It's a point Rand Paul has been trying to share this whole time, and the CDC eventually admitted it:
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/youtube-owes-rand-paul-an-apology-after-science-vindicates-his-mask-comments
The masks did nothing to help Trump supporters, or anyone else for that matter.
That's not entirely true.
A frightening number of party-line Dems still believe that even fabric coverings will actually slow or prevent the spread, because their information silo never progressed past the claim that the virus was only spread via "droplets" and their mental filters prevent the acknowledgement of any of the actual controlled studies which have been done since late 2020.
There's even some evidence that a properly fitted ventilator (N95 or better) type of mask will provide some measure of protection to the wearer; correlatable information about spreading the virus while masked is hard to really come by since it'd require knowing the infection status (symptomatic or not) of individuals interacting in public and deliberately not isolating known positives.
The people you're signalling to are wearing theirs because they still believe there's some kind of benefit in addition to signalling, even if they're wearing a blue paper mask while driving alone or walking outdoors with nobody within 20 yards of themselves.
There's a difference between being against mask mandates and being anti-mask even if it's the individual's choice.
You apparently want stossel not to be free to make that choice for himself, or you want to judge his choice if it does not match what you would choose for yourself.
Stossel is exceedingly old. He's had portions of his lung removed. His risk level is considerable. A well fitting n95 mask, worn selectively in crowded indoor spaces, could reduce the risk for a geriatric with lung issues like stossel. Leave him alone to make is own choice, and confine your judgment to yourself.
Only leftists wear masks.
Stossel has a beard.
Wearing a mask with a beard is indeed stupid and pointless.
This guy gets it
So much this
You want protection? Well fitted n95 is impossible with a beard, any other mask is about as good as hiding your face in your t-shirt.
Wearing a mask is a political statement. He's saying he's a leftist who hates Trump. Stossel has zero credibility at this point.
You are all acting like idiots.
Having worked in a hospital for the whole fucking COVID drama, I observed how there are useful things as well as stupid things you can do. Masks fall into both categories.
For many it's done to make a point, that they think they are "following the science ["aren't I special?"], that they belong to the correct tribe [in juxtaposition to those "stupid people over there"] or because they truly believe they are in danger even if they aren't.
Such persons will often be seen wearing a cloth or possibly paper surgical] mask that it known to be virtually useless against an aerosolized pathogen. As Michale Osterholm [epidemiologist University of MN] describes it, "if you can smell someone's cigarette smoke through you mask, you are exposed"]. The masks we used, I used, in the medical setting was an N 95; properly sized and worn, they do work and are highly effective.
I hate the use of masks for the wrong reasons, but I wore an N 95 while running some errands last week, after I learned that my wife was positive for the Eris derivation of the Omicron variant, which I came down with a day later. In its current form it is essentially a glorified head cold, but I chose to wear a mask that actually works because I don't want to spread a contagion, especially to anyone who might be adversely affected by it.
There are good reasons, and stupid reasons, but unless you know, you do not fucking know.
You're the idiot. Masks don't work. Anyone who says they do is a Democrat.
I hope you are joking; if not, well an aphorism comes to mind:
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
First, that comment wasn't from ML, it is the troll that is probably Sarcasmic playing the pants-shitter role. Second, it is not idiotic to point out that wearing an N-95 that cannot be fitted properly because of facial hair is not efficacious.
If Stossel has real concerns, he should shave. Personally, if I had his income, I would buy a bubble helmet like in the Jetsons with HEPA filters and seals and a pump that provides positive pressure so that I don't get that feeling I can't breathe.
I have facial hair and was successfully fit tested for an N 95.
Too many people want to play the expert and overly employ the words “always” and “never.”
Keep backtracking you fucking leftist piece of shit.
Golly. Do you also lick the blacking off of Hitler's jackboots with that mouth?
Too many people want to play the expert and overly employ the words “always” and “never.”
I hope you are not including me in that. I also have had responsibility in fit-testing for N-95s. A full beard like Stossel's (and mine) would prevent a proper fit for a respirator and is not allowed in environments where N-95 is the requirement.
Here is a study that shows that even the N-95 is significantly compromised over a full beard. And that cloth or surgical masks are useless regardless of beard.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41370-021-00337-1
Again, I would go with the George Jetson helmet.
I work in a chemical manufacturing facility. No facial hair is allowed for any respirator fit checks. Ever. Ask any fireman or OSHA.
An employee who is required to wear a respirator may have hair that falls under the respirator straps, but is not permitted to have hair that interferes with the respirator's sealing surface. Facial hair in the temple region of the face may or may not impact on the facial seal area of the respirator.
George Jetson helmets are called PAPR's. (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) Some of my team wears these because they want to keep their beards.
Note he said "Facial hair" and not "A beard". There's a big difference between "facial hair" and a full beard, which is why firemen only have mustaches if they grow facial hair, but are otherwise clean shaven.
So, technically, a well trimmed mustache qualifies as "I have facial hair."
SO, my question to Quo Usque Tandem is: Do you have a full beard?
You were "fit tested" I assume by somebody who was trained in how to fit the mask. That's a far cry from somebody who hasn't a clue of what they were doing. I used to be certified to fit respirators when I worked for a Company that had a paint shop, but, I haven't a clue on how to fit a N95 mask.
Describe for us your "Facial hair." In detail.
I hate the use of masks for the wrong reasons, but I wore an N 95 while running some errands last week, after I learned that my wife was positive for the Eris derivation of the Omicron variant, which I came down with a day later.
^Shit that didn't happen.
Personal freedoms and choice. What you believe is not necessarily what others believe. He's 76...I understand why he wears one. The college student...not so much.
Masks, lockdowns, and closing schools won't stop COVID.
Well, no they won't stop Covid, but they will lower your risk of getting Covid by 37.28 percent and lower your risk of dying by nearly 83.4 percent. According to studies, jumping over a pile of straw, throwing a kumquat at an old lady, wearing a silver bracelet, ring, or necklace, hopping on one foot while going upstairs, and rubbing a deer's foot will reduce these chances by another 14.37 percent. It's all Science ™!!!
Totally idiotic BS. Give us the studies, and we will shred them for you.
Sounds promising. Does the deer have to alive whilst I rub its feet?
Or admit it was an attack and declare martial law as "we" retaliate. Happy now?
Working part-time, I bring in more than $27,000 USD per month. I listened to a variety of people explain to me how much money they would reasonably expect to make online, so it’s still difficult to determine. It did become genuine, and it completely db40 altered my life. Everyone should now just try this line of work.

A 24% increase in next to nothing is still next to nothing.
But even if it were not, mandates and lockdowns did not achieve their aim. I'd even go so far as to say they achieved the OPPOSITE of their aim.
Let's take lockdown, where "essential" workers were treated like lepers if they caught COVID. With massive unemployment, everyone was terrified to lose their job, so when workers got sick, they would take symptom suppressing medication and go to work anyway, fearing that if they didn't, they'd be fired/dismissed, and with everything shut down, have little recourse. More broadly, the messaging of "just stay home" was terrible public health; the best thing you could do, which I took advantage of, was to get outside, get some sun and fresh air, and stay active (hiking was my go-to activity, because I'm not going to encounter many people on a remote 10-20 mile trail even during "normal" times, let alone fear-porn panic times... and if they're sick, that's usually too much exertion for them to get far).
Now for masks, where 100 years of studies say they don't much help to slow the spread of airborne illness (and if you checked the pore size vs. virus size, it'd be obvious this is the case -- hell, the CDC right now claim masks don't help with SMOKE/SOOT, a LARGER particle, so why are they going to block a virus??), people don't use them properly anyway (how many people had one in their purse/car that kept being reused?), and they get filthy with pathogens (bacterial pneumonia from mask-wearing was a big problem during Spanish Flu). The result is a bunch of stressed out, resentful people who are more susceptible to illness. And sure we stopped the plastic straws only to replace them with 10,000 times the waste with masks. We'll be seeing those disgusting, evil things discarded everywhere, forever.
The best solution was a humidifier, because a virus can't travel as far in humid air. This is why the northern waves mostly come in the winter and the southern waves mostly come in the summer. Arid, enclosed environments cause higher transmission. Why do you think hospitals and cruise ships are basically giant petri dishes?
I will kind of roll my eyes at Stossel because it's clear even an N95 isn't doing much, if anything. If it makes him feel better, fine, I guess. Me, I don't care how old or infirm I get, I'm not waterboarding myself with one of those damn things ever again (I played along for 2 months but after constant nosebleeds I ignored the orders when I could, stopped going places that enforced it, or used a face shield when I had no other options), and if anyone so much as suggests I don one of those disgusting rags, I pretty much wish them dead.
Nobody would even care about people wearing masks if they hadn't tried to force it on everyone else. But now it's just a persistent, lingering reminder of what absolute evil shitbags statist maskers are, as well as a constant, ominous warning that the next power-grabbing panic could be right around the corner.
Note to foreign readers: The Chinese flu epidemic is the only thing Christian Nationalist Republicans can safely bring up--even if only to lie about how they'd a done it differently. Their Televangelical Hitler packed the court with girl-bullying nazis and brags about it. The Grabbers Of Pussy platform calls for reenacting prohibition laws since happily repealed, and robbing, jailing and shooting young people, latinos and anyone slightly brown whenever possible because Satanic plant leaves.
Where are the "girl-bullying nazis" in the court? Not one nominated by Trump, that's for sure. Nevermind the fact that none of Trump's accusers have been able to make a compelling case. Why lie in stating otherwise?
One more repeat, just for the record:
Official CDC guidance (prior to "the panic").
"If you are sick, you should wear a facemask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) and before you enter a healthcare provider's office. If you are NOT sick, you do not need to wear a facemask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a facemask).
And early "science".
New England Journal of Medicine 5/21/2020
We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid-19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction in a public space is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic.
And the two years of anxiety and the 20 lockdown pounds were worse for many peoples' health than catching COVID.
John do better with the line" I'm skeptical of the anti-vax messages on my social media. Unvaccinated people are five times more likely to die. " so if taken as true statement that you made .0001 x5 for 50 year olds or .000001 x5 for under 30 was this needed and stated in a light that people could digest better or just creating fear mongering yourself?
Yep. Buying ten lottery tickets means you're ten times more likely to win than someone who bought just one, but you're actually just wasting even more money.
Sort'a a strange jump from Covid authoritarianism to a De Santis interview.
>>I'm skeptical of the anti-vax messages on my social media. Unvaccinated people are five times more likely to die. Vaccines are still the most effective way to protect ourselves.
bit too disciple-ish for me.
Again, that’s making up nonsense - and ignores all the vaccine injuries killing people, and most notably all the teenagers and 20 something’s falling over and dying of heart attacks.
Masks never really worked because the studies supporting such were based on models that assumed droplet dispersal. But that only applies to symptomatic patients, who should be quarantining anyway. Presymptomatic and non symptomatic patients spread the virus by aerosols, which aren’t even stopped by N95 masks. There is an order of magnitude (x10) difference between the N95 hole size and the virons in a COVID-19 viral aeros
Anyone talking about vaccines for the Communist Chinese Virus without talking about age groups is a propagandist, regardless of position.
Vaccines are still the most effective way to protect ourselves.
Really? Because I find not necessitating an HIV vaccine in the first place to be far more effective.
Even just the amount of research dollars Fauci misdirected into AZT research alone outweighs the research expenditure on "Don't fuck people with HIV or use their needles." by multiple orders of magnitude.
DeSantis: Yeah, but there’s certain business regulations that everyone’s gotta abide by.
Stossel: I’m just surprised you’re pushing them.
DeSantis: Sometimes, you just gotta say, is this something that we want in our state at all? That’s how we’ve come down.
That’s how we’ve come down? The politician decides for everyone?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quiet peasant ! It’s okay when *I* do it.
Local regions would've imposed mask mandates on businesses. DeSantis prevented that kind of thing from happening. Florida is vindicated with their approach to COVID-19.
The difference between 2020 and now is that we have a huge network of people ringing the alarm bells about the upcoming covid tyranny redux:
https://simulationcommander.substack.com/p/now-is-the-time-to-not-do-what-youre
This is the power of public backlash. The first go-around with dumb covid rules, too many people meekly went along with the scam, and a large portion of people who resisted did so quietly by staying home.
Now is the time to get loud and tell the ‘leaders’ to shove their arbitrary and convoluted rules that don’t make a bit of difference in the first place. No to mask mandates. No to mandated testing. No to booster jabs that were authorized without long-term safety data. And most of all, no the idea that the ‘leaders’ have the power to do any of those things in the first place.
I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!
Stossel is right, of course, but this ain't Amerika's first Flu Rodeo. The same Kleptocracy was in office, different politicians at the close of WW1. Here's a headline from then: Stamp Out the "FLU" ENFORCE THESE RULES--See That Your Neighbor Obeys Them--Report any Violations, list of business closings, curfews, restrictions, Isolation orders, penalty of fine or imprisonment, social gatherings discontinued... (The Deseret News 28NOV1918 p.1) Anyone can read this on Google news archives. Unpleasant memories are suppressed, then relived!
So John, you disappoint me. You took the clot shots and boosters, and now your body is full of spike proteins that may be giving you clots. The shots were never safe and effective, and the vaxxxed and booooosted are WAY more likely to get the virus, wind up in hospitals, and die. The dangerous experimental jabs have most likely killed more than Covid, and are continuing to ravage immune systems, cause strokes, heart attacks and disease, and fertility issues, among over 1500 serious side effects that Pfizer documented in their very brief trials. Go to openvaers.com for sobering death statistics from CDC's own reporting system; the clots shots have killed more than all other vaccines combined. Ever hear of SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome) and excess mortality during the last three years.? It wasn't from the Covid virus, so what's the most likely suspect? Over 2000 vaxxxed athletes have experienced heart issues and deadly heart attacks in that period. My advice: stop taking the boooooosters and get your blood tested for clots. You might live longer. BTW, masks do not stop viruses from getting through. You need to wear a hazmat suit.
The article, like so many Reason articles, implicitly assumes that governmen tries to act in the best interest of the people but just lacks knowledge and understanding.
That’s not what’s going on. COVID policy was and continues to be a means for certain politicians to gain power. Questions of liberty or public health are irrelevant in what officials choose to do, so discussions about liberty and health and facts are pretty much irrelevant.
Stossel: But if I have a candy store and want to say you have to stand on your head to
buywork for me selling my candy…The DOL is on line 1 Mr. Stossel. Something about the ADA.
Oh, and the EEOC is on line 2 Mr. Stossel.
Amen, Stossel.
Every time the COVID case rate ticks up, totalitarians start talking about bringing back mask mandates.
Without ever citing any evidence that they worked in the past, compared to states that ended them sooner.
The current peaks in hospitalizations and deaths are still below the low values for 2020, 2021, & 2022. Test positivity has gone up because, except for a few psychos, testing is confined to clinical diagnosis instead of testing asymptomatics for no good reason.
The fact that this is even a topic is absurd.
What part of pandemic and public health does this"freedom" snowflake not understand. It's not picking your favorite color or type pizza Bozo, it's how do we protect the health of the public. F you if you don't like it. Move to Tibet.
PS As they have since the Delta variant, unvaxxed Americans lead in new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from Covid.
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/united-states-rates-of-covid-19-deaths-by-vaccination-status
You left out the fact that California still has more cases of COVID than any red state does. Don't be so deceptive again.
