Gov. Jerry Brown Worried Stoners Are Holding California Back
He's Gov. Jerry Brown, whose aura smiles and never frowns - unless he's talking to Meet The Press about legal pot (click above for a 40-second soundbite). Then he starts sounding much older than his years, saying stuff such as:
"How many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation?"
You know, a better question is probably something along the lines of the following:
"How many people can you lock up for drug-related offenses and how many people can you employ as cops, prison guards, lawyers, you name it in a patently unsuccessful attempt to stop drug use and still have a great state or a great nation?"

Drug warriors' answer: AS MANY AS WE HAVE TO!
We had to imprison the country, to free it.
With the amount of drinking I saw in California compared to everywhere else I've lived, the question should begin,
How many drunk can you have and still...
Where else have you lived?
Because, everywhere that I've lived peope drink way more alcohol than people in CA.
"How many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation?"
Gov. Brown is very upset at the notion of an outbreak of dysaesthesia aethiopica among his subjects.
You know who else wanted a great state and nation?
Sam Houston?
Take not the Lord's name in vain!
But that says that condition only affects black people, NutraSweet. How does that explain Spicoli?
Obviously the disease jumped racial barriers in the meantime.
What Episiarch knows about epidemiology wouldn't fill up the reservoir tip of the Micro-Man XS child's condoms he has to use.
All I know about epidemiology I got from your mom, after one of my Micro-Man XS child's condoms broke.
I find it (disturbingly) hilarious how people who were forcing other people to pick crops for them and partially justified it under the theory that white people weren't naturally suited to working outside in warm climates had the nerve to call slaves and free blacks lazy.
No one wants to think of themselves as evil, so the greater the evil they engage in, the wilder and more bizarre their rationalizations.
When what people produce belongs to the state, this is a legitimate worry.
What about the costs of drug abuse for the abusers themselves? And their families?
As a court-sanctioned drug abuse counsellor, I see examples every day of people who would never have come to me voluntarily if they weren't forced to by the courts and law enforcement. Nobody seeks counselling for something they enjoy doing and feel good about, even if it's sapping their brain fluids every time they indulge. You talk about 'freedom' but what kind of freedom is that, where you don't want to do what's necessary to live your life without addiction? Sometimes you have to force people to become free.
Meh, I'll give you a B. Pretty good with the outrageous control freakery, but you oversold it at the end. You have to learn how to conclude properly.
You know it's going to be an insightful comment when it starts with "meh". :-\
With your dulled level of social awareness, there's hope you'll be in my office one day sorting the remnants of your psyche out.
Well, now it's a D. That's a terrible response. You should have protested that you were in fact real; fool those who take people at their word or something. Instead you went for the super-weak non-believable insult. Sigh. We have the worst sockpuppets.
It's eminently believable. I see your type walk in every three days. Everything's a joke and the world is your playground, until the laughter stops, reality hits, and it all comes crashing down.
Somebody's gonna have to deal with your sorry ass, whether it's me or someone like me. Assuming you live that long.
Stunningly weak. Oh well. Time for brunch anyway.
There's the 'super-weak non-believable' excuse for leaving the conversation.
The only reason you have to deal with anything is that your peers in the enforcement business have riddled your clients of all their money and freedom, and then dumped them off at your office.
Do you really believe that all people skeptical of the drug war are on the verge of being raging addicts that require the "benevolent" services to be found in your office?
my wife does the same work you do and has seen chapter and verse of the malicious truth you want to ignore - no addict cleans up his act without first deciding to do so. You can force people into an infinite number of rehab programs - and she has dealt with those folks - but until they make the move to change, nothing happens.
They're never going to make the move to change unless someone forces them to. Maybe it's the cops or maybe it's the family they are financially dependent on.
What you "liberty liberty liberty" people don't realize is that there's not 'freedom' on one side of a line and 'coercion' on the other. It's a gray continum. Nobody walks in and says "hey I totally woke up this morning and waked and baked this morning and it felt great and now I'd like to stop." There's always some degree of external pressure.
and I've heard about the ones forced into rehab who tell her nothing will change until they decide. I'm not inventing dialogue for the fun of it.
The force will come from some outside entity - a spouse who's had enough and is ready to leave, waking up in a roadside ditch, losing a job, etc. And even then, the force won't be enough without the addict being willing to act in his/her self-interest.
It's tough to disentangle self-interest from pleasing the people you depend on. My point is that without that pressure there will never be a willingness to change.
Nobody comes in for counseling on caffeine addiction, despite probably 70% of society being addicts. Why? Nobody they depend on pressures them over it because it's an accepted thing. If you people have your way and pot becomes an accepted thing, no one's going to try to quit that either, no matter how destructive it is in their lives.
change comes from within, not from agents of the state compelling someone to go see you. The argument you are using toward pot is the same one folks used to justify prohibition, and there are plenty of people here who favor legalization but have no interest in actually using weed or any other drug.
If you people have your way and pot becomes an accepted thing, no one's going to try to quit that either, no matter how destructive it is in their lives.
Yeah. No one ever tries to quit drinking or smoking.
In my experience, a good proportion of heavy pot smokers get tired of it and just stop sometime in their late 20s or early 30s.
"As a court-sanctioned drug abuse counsellor"
Clientele, at the point of a gun!
Just like school teachers and tax preparers, only worse.
I have an alternative health practice. Rollo...I doubt you help anyone with that attitude.
"...your sorry ass...." You think that about people you're trying to help?
Later in the thread you mention you're part of the court system. I believe it. You and your buddies have done a great job so far. Keep it up.
Being all sunshine and rainbows is great for first graders, not for hardened addicts. There has to be pushback. Yes, I think that people I'm helping are sorry asses in the situation they're in now, and with my help hopefully they won't be anymore.
You really get off on the Nurse Ratchet shtick, huh. You ever talk to a therapist about that?
Do you jerk off while watching people in shock therapy? I bet you do. The smell... the sweat and ozone... the sizzling sound....yes.... FREEDOM FROM THOUGHT...
You really have no idea what drug abuse counselling is, do you? It's the last line of defense.
Ooooh, you're SO important. Keep doing god's work Rollo. The world couldn't survive without you.
"Rollo|3.2.14 @ 5:53PM|#

Nothing says, "we care", like "Court Mandated"
yes, it like any other form of counseling. It only works if the client is willing. Marriage counseling is useless if one party think it a waste of time, or does not see a problem, or feels forced to be there. Financial counseling doesn't work unless the person understands he's the cause. Come on, man.
"Court-sanctioned"? Does that mean "paid by the government and thus have a stake in the status-quo" by any chance?
It means that I'm recognized as a competent practitioner in my field.
Your question about how I'm paid is irrelevant and unfair, but to answer it anyway, yes, I'm paid by the government. I'd love to find a way to get other moneyed interests to pay their fair share for my work, but in the current political climate they've exempted themselves from that responsibility.
As I often tell my patients, no judgement and no bad blood as I see you have bad influences around here.
Who are these moneyed interests and what is their responsibility?
"...no judgement...." Everything you've written is riddled with judgment.
No, it's fair because it illustrates your lack of objectivity.
As for myself, I generally don't presume myself to be in a position where I can judge someone's overall productivity - or what it should be. People make decisions and live their lives. Who's to say that where they end up and how they got there is good or bad? So long as they're not causing direct harm by act or omission.
I'd love to find a way to force government to extract money from other parties I don't like, but you "liberty people" are acting as a roadblock.
/derp
Fuck off, dude. If your services are worth what you say they are to society, people will willingly pay for them.
mlg, it's Tulpa. He got busted playing a sock below.
Fun fact: "Tulpa" is a Tibetan word that basically means an imaginary friend.
http://www.tulpa.info/archive/.....ion-guide/
Sometimes you have to force people to become free.
Who the fuck needs a mask anyhow, amiright.
Sockpuppeted, I really ought to read the whole thread first.
Thats not a bad try Rollo. I have met the people you claim to be one of and your 'freedom is slavery' tripe is pretty close to what they spew.
Sounds like you are trying to justify the WoDs so you'll keep your bullshit government job.
addiction does not require the WoD. My wife is a counselor, in a for-profit facility. People bring all sorts of life baggage with them. The ones who get clean are the ones who have lost all they are willing to lose. She is under no illusions that the magic of her voice - sexy and soothing as I find it - will spark miracles among the clients.
That was kinda my point wareagle. The ones that want the help will get it, without the government requiring it. Arresting people and requiring they get counseling is an invented jobs program requiring far more counselors be employed to fill the mandated demand.
(Didn't mean to sound like I was bagging on counselors)
no offense taken. She thinks the drug war is stupid, too. I don't know if it contributes to job security for her, but I am clear she recognizes a waste of time when it plops down in front of her.
You're not free unless you're free to be wrong.
"freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"
As a court-sanctioned drug abuse counsellor
Yeah. The dope peddlers evil twin. Two breeds of parasite living off the woes of the addict.
"sapping their brain fluids" - did you get your counselling certificate from DARE? There is no evidence that cannabis does any long-term damage to cognitive abilities. The major negative is a reduction in short-term memory that disappears when use ceases. Compare this to, say, alcohol, which actually kills brain cells...
Cannabis shall be removed from CSA "Schedule I", and placed in "CSA Subchapter I, Part A, ?802. Definitions, paragraph (6)", appended to the list "distilled spirits, wine, malt beverages, or tobacco", where it will STILL be the least-toxic in the category [by several orders of magnitude].
Anything short of THAT is UNACCEPTABLE.
http://www.deadiversion.usdoj......sc/802.htm
First sentence, the use of 'public morals' is where I stopped reading.
The Meet the Press -ers had a nice little Durr HURRRRRRRRR! moment, there.
David Gregory has never smoked any dope, so he has to rely on the ONDCP for everything he knows about it.
ONDCP, also known as "The partnership for a truth-free America"
What he really means =
""How many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation pay all the taxes we need to run this nanny state shithole?"
The great conundrum of the progressive utopian-Statists or the theatre-degree-communists is how they always inevitably in the course of their great "liberation" of the masses from the unnecessary burdens of labor always *run out of people to fleece*. The needle on the record skips and faster than you can say, "its not a party until something gets broken" the labor camps are running at full steam.
wow. That was a *bold* statement.
...
"We must expand the welfare rolls to keep ourselves in power."
"Oh shit everyone's on welfare and there is no one left to steal from! What do we do?!?"

curious if you know the quote.
No, don't fucking look it up/
Nope.
Rob Lowe-St Elmo's Fire.
I think in the 1980s, every teenage male was in their own minds some combination of that guy and Maverick in Top Gun. without the obvious heavy gay.
Deep Stuff.
I absolutely fucking hate St. Elmo's Fire. With a passion. It is a Joel Schumacher film, and as such pretty much sucks (Lost Boys being an aberrant exception). If you're going to want to be someone, at least have it be WOLVERINES.
I always found it interesting that open borders types would have an affection for Red Dawn.
"Tulpa (LAOL-VA)|3.2.14 @ 6:07PM|#

If you can't appreciate the utter and complete AWESOME implicit in the idea of *CUBAN PARATROOPERS* attacking.... (wait for it)......
....COLORADO??.....
... then you are a hopeless loss, an utter philistine, completely bereft of any appreciation of *true art*.
Also = you completely misconstrue the obvious lesson of the film regarding *genuine* national security concerns, and how 'border security' is a complete canard in the modern day, and a mammoth waste of national resources on a non-issue.
To this day I raise the topic of Cuban Paratroopers with the "secure teh Borderz" types. It never ceases to amuse.
"If you're going to want to be someone, at least have it be WOLVERINES.
I suppose I shouldn't have to remind you they all pretty much die by the end, right? (you are intended to presume Swayze dies of exposure)
(ALSO! I swear to god, Milius stole the end scene straight from Kurosawa's *Ikiru*. That is SO awesome up when you can have some *deep, deep* schlock laced with references to film classics)
Milius is the absolute shit, to be sure. In a better world there would be a dozen like him.
Not Lea Thompson. God I worshiped her.
I saw it for the first time about a year ago. I like it because it's the 80s. It wasn't a very good movie though.
You have to be like 12 years old, it has to be ~1986, and the point of the movie for you has to be=
"If *I* were one of the guys in this movie, how would I manage to fuck *all three* of the leading female stars? And in what order? Hmmmm"
If you don't have all those things, yeah, the movie completely sucks.
The line about "its not a party until something gets broken" is still very quotable, nevertheless.
St. Elmo's Fire holds place as the only movie I ever walked out of. The best part of that movie was the song.
I took a first date to Red Dawn. She was about half-a-foot taller than me and looked--in horribly clear retrospect--uncomfortably like Dee Snyder. She made up for being white-blond and bloodlessly pale by not having boobs, hips, or a butt. She was as huggable as a Festivus pole and slightly colder.
Her name was Dawn. I took Dawn to see Red Dawn. There was no second date. She never spoke a kind word to or about me ever again.
She only had to be with you for 114 minutes, imagine how those of us who've spent years trudging through your muck feel.
I thought you blocked me, Tulpa. You had a right nice speech about it, as I recall. But you can't quit me, I guess.
Have fun skulking around the weekend and late night threads, you coward.
I only blocked you because you were littering the threads with vitriol at the time. Now that you only post rarely, it's easier to avoid your bouts with mania and respond to something useful that you say when it happens.
Oh, Tulpa. You fucked up and didn't change your handle back. Moron.
Sockpuppetting? Really, Tulpa? I thought even you had more dignity than that.
It's only sockpuppeting if you are posting things you agree with under your real name.

As if the world isn't getting the bureaucrat viewpoint 24/7 from every other media outlet. What a maroon.
Ya know, that's pretty pitiful. Just when I thought my respect for Tulpa couldn't possibly sink any lower, he up and proves me wrong.
I always knew he was an attention whore, but to need to run a sock to get it is about the most pathetic thing I've ever seen.
Are you Bo too, Tulpa?
Earlier you helped answer a question I asked about who gets barred here and why.
Do you think this fits within your framework to be barred ?
Doooh! Guess we know who the sock is.
A sockpuppet is just a wish your ass makes, Francis.
"Her name was Dawn. I took Dawn to see Red Dawn. There was no second date. She never spoke a kind word to or about me ever again."
When is your book coming out, because sir? You are an artist.

Honestly I thought this was a best line:
She made up for being white-blond and bloodlessly pale by not having boobs, hips, or a butt. She was as huggable as a Festivus pole and slightly colder.
I'm glad I checked this out on my lunch break. Classic to see Tulpa out his own sock puppet! Our trolls have been stepping up the retard lately and this just put icing on the cake. Just Freaking Hilarious!
Only movie I've ever walked out on was "The Fisher King."
Poor sad stupid Tulpa. Is it just my imagination, or is he getting more pathetic by the month?
It's not your imagination.
I mean, this is just sad. Handle-hopping to troll a lightweight Sunday afternoon anti-WOD thread? Are these the actions of an adult that has any reason to live? How does he even drag himself out of bed in the morning?
I just want him to know that there were several people making fun of him at brunch this morning. Goodbye "professor" Tulpa.
People make fun of Paris Hilton too. You think she cares?
I mean, this is just sad.
No it's not, it's hilarious beyond belief!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
(gasps for breath)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
(another gasp)
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
And the best part is I pegged him on post one. Oh Tulpy-Poo, you suck so badly we might need to make sure you don't create a black hole here on Earth.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Look, it's necessary to have him around, just so you can benchmark how well you're doing as a human being, as compared to him.
It's important to have external, objective data for validation. This is science, yo.
I mean, I knew he was a pathetic failure of a man, and I knew he was sockpuppeting because he's too stupid to attempt to change his voice when he's doing characters. But still. To see him fail this spectacularly is sad. Er, wait. Not sad. What's the word that means the opposite? Oh, right, hilarious.
What a stupid dumbass.
Bets on how long it'll be before he shows his face again?
Hopefully never.
You get drunk this morning?
Jesse and I had road mimosas on the freeway, and I had 3 more at brunch. Never caught a buzz. I had pho and a couple beers for dinner, though, and now I'm good.
Great time, though. Hugh and Scott Shackford made it down there too...
Cool.
This. Is. Hilarious.
Tulpa has made my day.
"Tulpa has made my day," said no woman ever.
Wow, a bunch of anonymous strangers think I'm pathetic for adding some spice to the latest boring drug war thread. I'm definitely going to cry into my pillow tonight and may never emerge again.
...but that would mean Sugar Piss Wart wins, and I can't allow that to happen.
Sure you did. Last year when I was on vacation practically every new poster was considered to be a Tulpa sockpuppet for at least a day.
That was in reply to Warty.
I should have walked out on Dead Man Walking, but I needed a ride back across the warzone that is Washington, D.C.
I see examples every day of people who would never have come to me voluntarily if they weren't forced to by the courts and law enforcement.
No shit. I can see why you so desperately want the government to force people to buy your shitty product.
Think about all the service industries that would collapse overnight if libertarians had their way. The prison industry, the drug abuse treatment industry, the tax prep and tax consulting industry, the SarbOx accounting and compliance industry, the TSA, not to mention all the federal workers -- all out of a job and on the street.
Maybe it would be good long term but boy, I don't want to be out on the street when it happens.
With the collapse of the regulatory state would come a plethora of opportunities for them.
That's what you're going to tell the people who've given the best years of their lives to studying regulatory compliance and tax law?
Yeah.
Fuck off, slavers.
Yeah, because private industry wouldn't immediately see an opportunity to make money and pick up the slack.
As I said above, the unemployed people are going to be specialists in fields that don't exist anymore. I don't know what job you envision a 50 year old tax attorney being hired for in the new libertopian regime. Walmart greeter maybe? But there's going to be a lot of competition.
Two words re: unemployed former statist cronies:
WHO. CARES.
See, a step up.
Lots of ditches need dug.
Lots of trash needs collection.
Whether they do it for pay or as part of a chain gang makes no difference to me.
What of the blacksmiths and buggy makers Mr Ford?
Calling them service industries is a stretch. Our tax laws are a hidden tax on the wealthy. Virtually impossible to not have an accountant and lawyer you're paying serious money to if you're in business.
who says those industries would collapse? Alcohol and prescription drugs have been legal for a long time and folks still wind up in rehab or counseling programs, often of their own volition. Those displaced would figure it out, much like someone sharp enough to be a tax accountant/attorney would find something else.
You think it would be bad in the SHORT term if all the TSA goons got fired and we stopped get raped or nuked at the airports?
You think it would be bad in the SHORT term if everyone currently locked in a cage because they smoked or sold weed was released?
And so on ... apparently your happiness is predicated on the misery of innocents.
Replace pot with Jesus and replace California with Georgia and you pretty much have 70% of shrike's political philosophy.
You sure it isn't 8%?
California is fucked up because all the stupid stoner leftoids vote for collectivist-statist bozos like Jerry Brown, and all on the mindless presumption that someone else will foot the bill for their nonsense.
That's what you're going to tell the people who've given the best years of their lives to studying regulatory compliance and tax law?
Those poor, poor, buggy whip braiders.
Wait a minute. I thought Jerry Brown WAS a Stoner.
So was BO, but that doesn't affect their perception of the need for drug laws.
They don't want today's kids to have to go through what they went through with drugs.
They both ended up pretty useless. I have to admit that. They therefore make a good point.
He's making 1/2 a good point. How many people can walk around stoned all day and still have a functioning society? There is a limit. But, the flip side - therefore let's throw them in jail makes no sense whatsoever. How about a debate? How about a public service announcement campaign? How about a series of ex stoners talking in a PSA about how it affected them over time? How about letting people do what they want, and if you have a nation of stoners it will fall by the wayside, and the next generation will not be stoners.
What is holding California back is stupid governance. You can't wash your car in one California town if your driveway slopes towards the road. Because they don't want the dirt from your car being washed into the ocean. This is the same dirt that came from the roads your car drove on. And, if your car had not picked up the dirt it would have washed into the ocean on the next rainfall.
There is nothing in our society that is now not regulated and you can be fined if you don't follow the rules. And, each item comes with a permit and a number of costs.
Except abortion. Deregulation now!!
In my experience most adults that do use MJ, do so responsibly. Not one gets high before work. Most enjoy an after dinner smoke, watch some TV or read, then go to bed. Period. I find it helps quite my mind and allows for a better quality of sleep.

"The [...] capitulation of Libertarianism to the [...] drug culture has always been its undoing."
Please define "capitulation".
"We" "allow" millions of people to get drunk every year. Now, drunkenness is not without its negative impacts, but our economy seems to function nonetheless. So I don't see how legal pot would really change anything.
I would dare say that the moonshiners had a net positive effect on their local economies in their day.
Doesn't California's Death Row have something like a 300-year backlog?
Eh, they die in prison one way or another.
