The horror ... the horror ...
I'm guessing you're not talking about the national ID card or the Sarah Palin Show. Should I keep guessing?
Actually, those were the first two things that caught my eye and caused me to post that. So you're right in one. This time.
...or actually wrong in one, since you guessed I was NOT talking about those things.
Does it really matter? Pick any relevant topic today, any topic at all, most likely, you will walk away muttering the same thing.
Good Morning reason!
Hi, Suki!
Were you traveling with Sandi?
No, but I am on travel now. Need to remember to use rental cars instead of bringing my behemoth when working in urban areas.
Is that a Sandi who comments here?
Yes. If she were to be in your behemoth, you might want to keep an eye on her.
LOL, as long as she flicks her ashes out the window and keeps her hands to herself, she can ride in the BFT.
I am on travel now. Need to remember to use rental cars instead of bringing my behemoth when working in urban areas. download the expendables
I don't have a link to add; I just didn't want to deny you a morning post from me.
Hi JL, thank you for commenting 🙂
Maybe California can scare away one more industry and get itself in an even bigger hole!!
Won't the holes get a little smaller if the porn industry moves out of the state?
Very well done, bmp.
Smaller, but less glorious.
i knew the word hole would get some comment. any others?
It will be a more sanitary whole, at least?
The holes will remain the size the DNA programs them to be.
The National ID card is a creature from hell. It will make us all aliens in our own country. If you are an LPR, you have to basically have permission from the government to work. Everyone knows that cliche about someone having a "misunderstanding with immigration". If they do this, anyone in America could lose the right to work with one misunderstanding or mistake by the government.
Fuck you Lindsey Graham.
It won't be a national ID card, just a national you're not an illegal alien card. How did the rabid anti-illegal alien crowd think their mission would pan out? Seriously. This idea is born from the we are not doing enough to prevent illegals from working battlecall.
If the I-9 form can't do the trick, we need a stronger system to weed out the illegals. That where this card come into play. If you don't have it, you can't be hired. Only legal residence will have one. It's the best schemes put forth that will acutally reduce the number illegals hired.
I think it's a crock of shit personally, but I'm not rabid anti-illegal. I bet Sheriff Joe and his followers love this idea. Speaking of Sheriff Joe, he just started one of his famous sweeps today.
I am anti-illegal. And I think it is a crock of shit. It won't prevent people from hiring illegals and it will just screw a bunch of people. And even if it did prevent people from hiring illegals, the price is too high.
Businesses could be audited for compliance and sting operations could help find those who are not on the up and up. It wouldn't end it completely but it would make a huge difference.
Yeah, everyone has a limit to their price. I think wasting money trying to build a fence across the border so to me, that price is too high. Some people think letting Sheriff Joe get away with his antics is too high. Some people think almost anything is too high.
Who should get to decide the limit?
How do you propose we prevent the illegals from working?
What if others think the price of your idea is too high?
As far as national IDs, the drivers license or a state ID is the defato national ID card. Almost all of the greivences from polticians about the real ID act is about funding. You also have been assigned a Social Security number. What's the difference between a new worker ID card, and the combination of your drivers license and SS card? We are soooooo close to a national ID card it's becoming a game of semantics. You can hand your new employer a work ID or your state ID and SS card. The time clock might even require a finger print or palm scan.
I really, really hate to say it. But a ID card connected to hordes of personal information, habits, and activities, is just around the corner.
Our nation's attitude towards national IDs will change much in the next 10 years, just like our attitude towards the surveillence society did.
It must be said: the fact that someone crosses a border or gets a job without permission is no good reason at all for me to be forced to carry papers that must be shown to the authorities whenever they ask. In the long run, that is NOT a small imposition, and those who assert that it is are either ignorant or disingenuous.
The fact that we have the right to establish and defend our borders does not mean that the choices we make in defending those borders are invariably wise. We would be better off to let peaceful people come and go over the borders freely, and even take jobs in this country if they can, with minimal hassle or bureaucracy -- ideally, none. As with the Drug War, the damage done by the "cure" for illegal aliens "takin' our jobz" is worse than that allegedly caused by the "disease."
A computer database glitch has sent police to the home of an elderly Brooklyn couple more than 50 times since 2002, sheepish cops admitted today.
Walter and Rose Martin endured the most recent raid on Tuesday, when four cops showed up looking for a suspect. Two officers broke a window in the back of their Marine Park home.
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/l.....yVGJolFIPK
Police are still investigating why the couples' address shows up in their database when some suspects' names are keyed in.
Databasing is hard!
You would think sometime between the 3rd and 49th time they would have HAND WRITTEN a note for all the cops that said "do not raid this house without double checking things first - its bogus".
they being cop management, not the homeowners. In case my pronouns confused you.
Stupid joke name. My ego isnt that big.
You are that you are.
I yam what I yam.
If only the Almighty would bitch slap these mother fuckers.
By "these mother fuckers," I mean the stupid ass NYPD douchebags, but you knew that. Right?
"Obama said the proposal by Democrat Charles Schumer and Republican Lindsey Graham..."
Starting off on the wrong foot...
"...which features a new identification card for U.S. citizens and legal immigrants who want a job, "can and should be the basis for moving us forward."
...then completely strangling the baby in the crib. And doing so in the first sentence to boot.
Oh and fuck Georgia. Any other state too that puts non sex offenders on a sex offenders registry.
Oh, so it's a voluntary ID card. You only need it if you want to have a job.
Exactly. 😉
"They would be required to admit they broke the law and to pay their debt to society by performing community service and paying fines and back taxes."
Sounds like a good idea for much of the administration and congress.

I wonder if we'll need the ID card to get medical care......
Certainly. And educational loans. Driver licenses. Alcohol. Sugary sodas. Pizza. What a brave new world it will be.
I would give that a plus one for being true. But it is too depressing and too true.
I forgot to add incandescent light bulbs.
Have a nice day.

Regular-flush toilets; regular-flow shower heads...
You won't need those if you don't have your ID card to get your monthly energy ration.
You know who else had a national ID system?
A number of tragically misunderstood governments, all of which only wanted to promote social justice.
Mr. Obama, may I zee YOUR papers please?
Birth certificate first kenya man!
His Dream will prove you an ass.
Word.
Are you the evil villain in Berry Gordy's The Last Eagle?
Heh heh, not quite, but about as funny.
GodLOSE!
No.
Who?
Obviously the solution is to rename them to something like "State Sex- and Other-Offender Registry."
Or just "social deviant registry"
The "Whomever We Wish to Punish In Order to Further Our Political Careers Registry"
How about you just include everyone and issue them all special identification cards? You could call it the National ID Registry.
+1
Or just "social deviant registry"
England has those. So so will we.
It'll go like the smoking bans. Someone in the San Francisco or Massachusetts government will hear about "ASBOs" and get jealous. Five years later, we'll all be fucked.
Minor threadjack:
Bye-bye to a poster boy for the death penalty.
I've grown tired of reading about this sick fucker in my morning paper.
I liked that this guy got justice served on himself.
First time I've heard about the case.
I'm actually not entirely against the death penalty, and his crimes were heinous...but it sounds like a Constitutional violation (double jeopardy).
Any info on how they got around that, or do I simply not know enough about the case?
I despise people like this, but my enthusiasm is tempered by the belief that the ends might not justify the means. I'll have to research it.
My guess (ianal) is that the overturned conviction vacated the orginal verdict but did not find him 'not guilty', rather it returned it to as if no trial had occured.
And the fucktard got some bad legal advice (or inferred it himself) that jeopardy had attached and went full fucktard.
(otoh, the much less serious case of Ehren Watada found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehren_Watada
that his mistrial did cause jeopardy to attach, so I have really no idea.)
Yes, you don't know enough about the case.
The problem is that for every piece of shit truly deserving of the death penalty, such as in this case, there's probably at least one condemned person who is innocent.
Sorry, but our masters have demonstrated that they can only wield this power incompetently, at best. They shouldn't have it all any longer.
That said, I'm down with torturing this fucker for every mocking letter he wrote the victim's family.
So...you want our masters to have the torture power, despite what you just said?
That was tongue in cheek, but in all seriousness, what incentive does someone on death row have to behave? There has to be some mechanism in place to discourage/punish this type of egregious behavior.
If a judge wants to have someone publicly flogged, I say let him.
There are things they can take away from you, even on death row.
Long stretches in solitary confinement, poor food, etc.
Mandatory Fun Friday.
"Says here on your National ID Smartcard that you had a Big Mac yesterday. I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait three weeks before having another one."
The possibilities make me wet myself in glee.
Merge the National ID with the cellphone, PDA, credit card, and taser, and total control can be yours!
Drop the taser, and we are about there.
They are closet dominants who cannot find any willing partners.
"""Says here on your National ID Smartcard that you had a Big Mac yesterday. I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait three weeks before having another one."""
That's just a warning sir. If you do it again, a penalty will be applied to your health insurance premium.
Hey, who says it has to be the government watching what you eat. Why can't private sector do that. Like your health insurance or your job?
Obama's Real Clear Politics approval polling average now negative for the first time.
They need to dump Rasmussed (clear Republican bias, even to this neutral observer) and the AP. That would make it dead even for the period.
*Rasmussen
Except that Rasmussen has the best track record of any of the major pollsters over the last few years, and the recent election results in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts seem a pretty strong validation to me.
In the long run, fine, but week-to-week he deviates at least five points from other polls. Anyway, I think you should drop the two most deviant polls.
The question, TAO, is whether his deviation from the other polls is a leading indicator. I think on Obama's popularity, at least, it has been.
Wait, he deviates from other polls, yet correctly predicts results, so dump his polls? You do realize just how stupid that sounds, right?
That's because of Rasmussen's method.
He doesn't actually poll. He gets his results from special Diebold voting machine "predictive algorithms".
(The preceding conspiracy theory is in the public domain. Feel free to use it.)
That can't be true or it would say Bush won. 😉
DNA samples collected at birth. National ID registration. Next stop; mandatory RFID tracking implants.
Trust me. There will be a line of idiots eager to sign up for RFID implants, among whom, there will be a strong correlation with support for net neutrality and mandatory broadband access.
"We wants teh internet and we wants to be parts of it." (Along with a picture of some cat)
Some people never get past security blankets and pacifiers.
It wouldn't actually be very hard. Pass a law mandating GPS locators implanted in every child who enters school, as a means of tracking them in case of kidnapping. That's how they got away with the mandatory fingerprinting.
It also helps if you design it to explode on contact with air once implanted, a la Turkana in STTNG.
Exactly. Just make sure the implant comes in a box with an Apple logo on it, and call it the iChip. You won't be able to keep them in stock.
Are you kidding me? You have it backwards. The strongest opponents of that sort of thing are the exact same types that oppose Net Neutrality. Read slashdot sometime.
No he had it right.
We should also develop implantable blood chemistry monitoring devices to detect the presence of drugs.
Hey! Juanita! welcome back!
how was your vacation three feet up DUMBEROOOOO's colon? do you have some nice holiday snaps for us?
Ah Juanita, your innocent desire to free the world from the scourge of mind altering substances just fans the flames of unrequited love.
When I was a newbie,
Said put away those newbie ways
Now that I'm gettin' wiser, so much wiser
I love all those newbie days.
With a troll like you,
With a troll like you,
Lord knows there are things we can do, baby,
Just me and you.
Come on and make it
Hurt so good.
Come on baby, make it hurt so good.
Sometimes love don't feel like it should.
You make it hurt so good.
Stop, you guys are making me lachrymose.
They have those for alcohol. They're basically armbands that monitor your blood-alcohol at all times and if you drink, send a signal out to your PO.
""Next stop; mandatory RFID tracking implants.""
You already carry a cell phone. Right? Why do you need RFID technology when celluar technology/GPS technology does a better job?
Many people couldn't imagine life without their tracking device, I mean cell phone.
No Friday Funnies? Did I miss something? The comedic potential of Cash for Clunkers has been completely mined?
Yeah, I want some damn Friday Funnies, even if I will probably just complain about them.
I was going to say that California was incredibly foolish for considering driving out one of its few remaining highly profitable industries, but then I got to this line at the link:
The board will weigh in a proposal to create an advisory board that would help decide whether or not pushing condoms on the industry is a good idea.
Yeah, advisory board. I've heard that one before.
I had a management information systems professor (way back when) who said, "If you want to know whether your reports are any good, stop sending them out, and see if anybody calls you up to ask for one."
Does this mean the Friday Funnies are here to stay?
We can only hope. Hell, I'll draw the Friday Funnies for a very small fee. I warn you. They won't actually be funny. I even have samples if anyone wants to see.
"won't actually be funny" is what Friday Funnies are all about. You're hired.
U.S. District Judge Denise Cote is apparently one of those judges who believes in tyranny. According to the article, she sites policy considerations in her determination that "Fly On The Wall" can't post information about bank research it receives from industry insiders. Remember 'prior restraint'? And the case in the 70's that made that phrase famous was about printing the plans for a nuclear bomb, for crying out loud. It was war secrets with the Pentagon Papers. You know what? The court ruled it illegal to block freedom of the press in these cases.
She calls their reporting illegal, even though the only conceivable illegality I can think of would be on the part of the person leaking the reports, not on the part of "Fly On The Wall".
Unless I am missing something, this is a massively important story on two fronts. First, the full frontal assault on freedom of the press; and secondly and perhaps even more importantly the way that she cavalierly ignores both the letter and the spirit of the actual laws on the books in favor of "public policy" requirements.
This view has plenty of support on the current supreme court. Breyer, Stevens and company fully support this notion that a judge has the responsibility to interpret the law based on the fairness of the outcome, rather than based on the written text of the law and constitution.
Here's a hint for you Denise:
"Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..."
Since this decision does precisely that, you've lost your effin' mind.
I like how the banks are claiming the ruling is about intellectual property. Obviously the information is not patented, and copyright only protects a particular presentation of the information, not the information itself. So I'm curious what sort of IP they think their research falls under.
IP goes far beyond trademarks, patents, copyrights, and the like. Consider know-how and trade secrets. I'm not saying this is confidential or proprietary info (and especially not that the banks are in the right here), only that it's plausible the info is "intellectual property."
Just not the sort protected by law or the constitutional authorization of Congress to create a system of patents and copyrights.
Unless the publisher obtains the confidential, privileged, proprietary, or even trade secrets wrongfully, he is free to publish.
Your Luddite cult of individualist pettifoggery tires me. It's for your own good! Jeepers, you people are dense.
We know what you need; stop pretending we don't.
+100 pts. for use of "pettifoggery".
Sarah Palin may get her own reality TV show.
Who could have foreseen this development?
You said talk show. Your powers are weak, old man.
careful, proglib! if you strike him down, he shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
and he'll win Captain Needa's heart and take him from you.
Actually, we established in another thread that Episiarch is Darth Vader. He turned to the Thin Side of the Pizza Force.
The president now has a "framework" for overhauling the immigration system. The proposals include a national ID card.
Before somebody justifiably throws it in my face, I admit to stating here that I though Obama would be better on civil liberties than Bush the Lesser.
I was horribly, completely fucking wrong. I knew he wouldn't end the wars, I knew he'd spend like a drunken sailor with Mom's credit card, I just thought on this one front he'd be superior.
My opinion of The Chosen One continues to sink into the tar pits.
Surprising heel turn from the Chosen One. I don't think it's kayfabe either.
He's been working us.
Well then, we'd better work stiff.
They won't actually be funny.
And...?
The immigration problem has been "fixed" by these idiots running the economy into the ground.
Sir, you appear to be paying attention.
Jake Austin Rainer may not belong on a sex-offender registry, but he definitely belongs on a (privately-owned) Backpfeifengesicht registry.
Agreed.
A national ID card, eh? WTF?
I'm sure that any moment now the liberal commentariat will be loudly denouncing this police-state crap. Olbermann will surely have a Special Comment, complete with extra spittle. I'm holding my breath waiting.
Why is my face turning that odd shade of blue? I feel kinda dizzy...kinda faint...THUMP
Were they opposed to them the first time around? I thought it was the proto-tea party types and state governments that were hostile last time.
From the cyber war article:
Elite U.S. military computer specialists...
Like ROUS's, I don't think they exist.
Oh, ****, you were in the Navy, right? If the Navy doesn't have them, they don't exist. I'm serious. The Navy's at the forefront of military intelligence and electronic warfare AFAIK.
Starting in the early '80s the Navy (and Air Force) decided to have ECM and ECCM gurus compete with each other. This included developement, employment and lot's of training. It was fun as can be for a senoir Firecontrolman. Funding was generous and the results phenomenol. We now have radars the Russians can't effectively jam and can deny use of the EM spectrum to any foe.
Yep, still am. But have been supported by Us Army (and Nato) 6 types as of late. But I've never been particularly impressed by government IT on the 'retail' level in any job I've held.
I suppose that in the valley of the blind, the one-eyed severe astigmatic with glaucoma and cataracts is king, or something like that.
The Army has, hands-down, the worst organizational rules when it comes to IT/Computer-stuff...ever. The nuking of USBs has really reduced our effectiveness.
The USB thing pissed me off at first. I guess I got used to e-mailing docs along networks when possible.
TAO - You said "our effectiveness." Is it possible that I have found someone who is as big of a walking contradiction as I am? Could there be more than one non-interventionist, government-hating civilian (or active duty, we're bro's either way) employee of the Department of the Army? Strength in numbers my friend...preferably anonymous numbers, but numbers nonetheless.
Our effectiveness, indeed. For a double-dose of irony, I post my noninterventionist sentiments from my government office, on my NIPR net, in Afghanistan.
Take that, public dole! 😀
So, it's gotten worse since the early nineties? They were craptastic then.
SNAFU no doubt. Still I'd like to see some verification on this story, even for the military it hardly makes sense. Even if the story is solid it doesn't consider possibilities such as counter-intelligence. Perhaps the site taken down wasn't a honeypot, however the one migrated to is, for example.
I've never been particularly impressed by government IT
I believe I heard that the new handheld computers the census wanted to use this year went 500% over budget, and had to be junked.
The sale people of tech companies often over estimate the ability of their product. I see that first hand and have to mop up the aftermath.
But here's a good one. It's starts like this
