Netflix Teams Up With the Obamas To Produce Big Government Propaganda
The G Word, a new documentary, only occasionally covers serious issues. But it opts not to do honest reporting.

Netflix is paying President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama millions of dollars to produce shows for them.
The latest Obama documentary series is The G Word. "G" for government.
As Netflix documentaries go, this one is remarkably stupid. It's big government propaganda.
Obama begins by claiming that he does his own income taxes, saying, "It's actually easy."
I think he's joking, but it's not clear.
"I'm amazing at them," Obama continues hours later. "You can be, too, if you use the helpful tools found at IRS.gov."
But that's just silly. It's so complex that millions of us pay to get help.
Obama's series is hosted by silly comedian Adam Conover. Conover, correctly, calls himself "an idiot."
He uses his time with the former president of the United States to make lame jokes and, at one point, to make sandwiches. He compliments Obama on how well he cuts the bread. It's not funny.
The series occasionally covers some serious issues—meat inspection, for example. But instead of honest reporting, actors do a skit suggesting that, without government, meat companies would sell us dead poisoned rats.
"Food regulation was unbelievably successful," concludes Conover.
But food is largely safe today mostly because slaughterhouses cleaned themselves up way beyond what government requires. Companies don't want bad reputations.
One company executive showed me how they voluntarily do extra things like treat beef carcasses "with rinses and a 185-degree steam vacuum." Also, "equipment is routinely taken completely apart to be swab-tested."
By contrast, for 90 years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspected meat with a crude process called "poke and sniff." Inspectors stuck spikes into carcasses and smelled them. They kept using the same spikes, so they sometimes spread disease. The government only stopped poke and sniff in the 1990s.
A few times, Obama's series admits that government agencies mess things up. Conover mocks the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), "not a name you normally hear after the words 'did a great job.'"
No, but he then claims FEMA fails because it's underfunded, saying, "How many lives could have been saved if FEMA had had the resources they needed?"
That's ridiculous. FEMA doesn't fail because it lacks resources. U.S. disaster relief funds have increased by billions. FEMA fails because it's a government bureaucracy, and bureaucracies do wasteful things, like bring bottles of water to hurricane victims but then leave them at an airport.
The private sector is more efficient.
The G Word sneers at what it calls "this philosophy that the free market should be trusted over the government." But Walmart donates supplies much more efficiently than FEMA. They employ sophisticated weather tracking that helps them determine what assets are needed where. They get things to people because they lose money if they don't.
Obama's series smears those of us who are skeptical of government handouts.
"In the wake of the civil rights movement," claims Conover, "some Americans began to resent the fact that the government was now providing assistance to black and brown citizens."
What? We didn't resent welfare because we're racists. We objected because it created a new permanent underclass.
Handouts, President Ronald Reagan explained correctly, "discourage work."
So Obama's documentary depicts Reagan as a vicious surgeon cutting valuable government agencies, throwing them into a bucket labeled "free market."
But government wasn't cut under Reagan. Federal spending went up during his terms. It always goes up. At one point, the excesses were so grotesque that President Bill Clinton said, "The era of big government is over."
But it wasn't. It only grows. Today it's bigger than ever.
That's fine, says Conover, because Washington rescued us during the COVID shutdowns with "stimulus checks, small business loans, and corporate tax breaks!"
They don't mention how much of that money was stolen or that their spending orgy brought 8 percent inflation.
For three hours, Obama and his sidekick say government should do more. Whatever the problem, their answer is always more government and more money.
Maybe someday a president will point out that government has no money of its own and that spending more than you have is a road to ruin.

Wait ‘til you hear about the soft-core porn Netflix did with 12 year olds.
Oops, sorry, forgot Reason supported that.
In a totally not related note, I have a hard time converting independents to libertarianism when they ask me wtf is up with libertarians and fucking kids.
Fuck Pedo Jeffy.
My last paycheck was $2500 for working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 8k for months now and she works about 30 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. The potential with this is endless.
This is what I do.........>>> OnlineCareer1
I unno dude, i think maybe the reason you're having trouble converting independents to libertarianism because, besides the fact that "being" politically independent (as in, not belonging to a party) is disconnected from being libertarian (a political philosophy), but also because you seem to think one individual contributor to Reason somehow encapsulates libertarianism
When a journalist is writing for a libertarian publication, he/she is expected to write articles in support of libertarianism. There are many cases where this has failed. Not hard to understand.
No one wants to fuck tubby. I hear his hand tried to jump into a wood chipper to escape his dick.
Conover, correctly, calls himself "an idiot."
Glad I'm not the only one. That dude is smarmy as fuck, too.
It's also false modesty, because he clearly believes he's an expert on everything, even though it's at the most superficial level. He's basically Tony's avatar or Brainy Smurf in human form.
^This.
He plays that card up front and then condescendingly libsplains to anyone who doesn't fully agree with the narrative.
Of course said libsplaining needs only the smallest amount of scrutiny to completely tear apart. Rogan, who is actually humble when he plays the "im an idiot" card, absolutely destroyed his trans arguments and had him sweating bullets.
Its funny how much these people sprinkle in the word 'right?' when they are trying their libsplaining. The new press secretary does it about every 2 seconds when cornered, Sam Harris did it a lot when he was explaining how we should silence the truth and interfere in elections because trump. Its a good tell
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35400 dollars each month (ams-11) simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28000 dollars, its simple online operating jobs

Adam ruins himself.
I never understood Obama's popularity. He was/is pure fluff, no substance, a liar. He harped on closing Gitmo his first day in office, got rebuffed, gave up, never mentioned it again; contrast that with Trump and his stupid wall which he kept pushing for his full term. Then there was that idiotic beer get-together with the Boston(?) black professor and cop.
The jokes about being the light bringer are closer to the truth than most people realize. All he brought was massless photons, no substance. He will be remembered as essentially useless in 100 years; it took Roberts' penaltax to save Obamacare, and it's a terrible bureaucratic monster which will only be remembered as a clumsy step on the path to socialism.
Calling himself a constitutional scholar was about as good a summary as there could be for his solidity and truthiness.
A fucking lightweight joke.
I never understood Obama’s popularity.
He was able to sound good reading the bullshit on the teleprompter, and he had the full weight of Hollywood and the news media fluffing him.
A fucking lightweight joke.
Yep.
-jcr
I never considered him an especially good public speaker. Mediocre at best but everyone in the media always played up his wonderful speaking style. I was taking a speech class at the time and notice he broke almost every rule we were taught in public speaking.
Honestly, his speeches always set my teeth on edge. Instead of making any attempt to persuade, he just lectured. He presented pure speculation, and occasionally outright lies, as if they were gospel truth. And then there was the way he tried to sound folksy and casual, but it always sounded more like sheer condescension to me.
I didn't care so much about Gitmo, what I don't get is how anyone opposed to the Iraq war would still like him after Syria and Libya. Anyone against the Patriot Act, should want him jailed for expanding the illegal spying program on USA citizens.
Yeah, as far as war mongery goes, he was at least as bad as Bush II.
People liked him because they wanted to like the black(ish) guy.
This was a big part of it.
Listening to NPR during the primaries in '08 was telling. They were unbelievably excited about the "historical" nature of the election, almost entirely surrounding race and gender of the Democrat front runners. Nobody cared about policy, it was just super exciting to have one candidate who was almost black and another candidate who was almost a woman.
The other thing was, with no hard press inquries, Obama ran a blank slate campaign. He just said "Change!" but he never said what the change was. Policy proposals were super vague -- immigration reform, health care reform, with no substance -- and where they were specific they were dropped on day 1.
As a result people projected on to him whatever they thought. Remember the lady saying "We won't have to worry about" her rent or car payment? They just assumed this handsome hobo was going to "change" things to the way they liked.
It's a good campaign method of you have media running cover for you.
“one candidate who was almost black and another candidate who was almost a woman.”
Lol.
"Calling himself a constitutional scholar was about as good a summary as there could be for his solidity and truthiness."
He was interested in the Constitution as a Deconstructionist of that document I suspect.
A Poindexter.
"He harped on closing Gitmo his first day in office, got rebuffed, gave up, never mentioned it again; "
Totally agree. And don't forget about Immigration. One of his biggest strikes against McCain was that he could solve it, and instead he just made it worse with a bunch of executive orders.
"The jokes about being the light bringer are closer to the truth than most people realize. All he brought was massless photons, no substance. He will be remembered as essentially useless in 100 years;"
This I *totally* disagree with. Obama's administration will be seen as the tipping point that put us on the road to either totalitarian government or revolution.
* Weaponizing the Patriot Act to spy on Political Rivals
* Weaponizing the banking system against unpopular parties
* Dodd-Frank creating Too Big to Fail Banks
* ACA taking over health regulations
* Nationalization of School Loans
* Raiding GM/Chrysler and putting party functionaries on their boards.
* Weaponizing the IRS against political Rivals.
At the end of Obama's administration, roughly 1/2 - 2/3rds of our economy was directly controlled by price-setting regulatory boards.
Don't forget restarting the race war and normalizing identity politics. His election was the turning point in the race obsession we are seeing today and demonizing people based on their immutable characteristics.
Well .... I did say Obamacare will mostly be remembered for its step towards socialism.
That's a lie. He introduced legislation. The republicans killed it and that was that. He did get a lot of gitmo detainees out over time and made the program wind down rather than add more people to it. Republicans were the ones who prevented it and wanted to torture people without a court trial in Cuba.
My point was that he never did anything once rebuffed. Never pushed it, never tried again.
As compared to Trump and his wall.
Try reading the whole comment next time.
Wrong. Team blue controlled the house and the senate from 2008 to 2010. He could have turned Gitmo into Disneyland and Republicans could do fuck all about it.
That’s a lie. He introduced legislation. The republicans killed it
LOL! Even the left-wing New Yorker didn't buy that bullshit excuse.

"...He did get a lot of gitmo detainees out over time and made the program wind down rather than add more people to it. Republicans were the ones who prevented it and wanted to torture people without a court trial in Cuba..."
If you squint just right, your view of reality might match up to this lefty shill.
" A fucking lightweight joke. "
Yeah, disaffected, racist, superstitious, poorly educated, backwater clingers never seemed to think much of former Pres. Obama.
They prefer Donald Trump.
Until they are replaced, that is. By their betters.
OBL, is that you?
How can this not be parody? BTW, you missed slack-jawed.
Finally see a therapist for your obsession with orally raping your political opponents?
Knowing that guy has wanted a leftist totalitarian state, he's gonna need a very long time with that therapist.
Asshole bigots seem to prefer lightweight jokes for POTUS rather than someone like Trump who boasted sound accomplishments.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
You're just mad because you've bumbled into a life of irrelevancy. Nobody cares that you're fat, bald, and alone.
That’s rich coming from you, we’re not the ones advocating conspiracies like CRT (which is racist as all hell) and unscientific principles like transgenderism (thinking you can magically turn a man into a woman is enormous superstition), as well as support educational systems that result in a median 0.13 GPA at Baltimore (now THAT is what I call poorly educated), honor military deserters (and THAT is what I call disaffection) and keep many African-American and other communities in disarray as a result of the failed policies (a real, actual backwater situation).
That all came from your side. Repent of your wrongfulness.
Especially perplexing is why so many considered him to be a good speaker. He didn’t talk to the audience (see Reagan). He shouted and lectured
That sing-song up-and-down tonal pattern annoyed my ears too much to tolerate more than a few seconds. Patronizing, condescending, utter disinterest and boredom. It betrayed his personality to perfection.
Reagan talked in a way that appealed to half-educated, obsolete, superstitious bigots.
Obama talks in a way that appeals to modern, educated, accomplished, reasoning Americans.
Different strokes for different folks . . . some on the right side of history and the winning side of the culture war, others on the wrong side of history and the losing end of the culture war.
Reagan talked in a way that appealed to half-educated, obsolete, superstitious bigots.
Not so, Reagan appealed to people of different backgrounds and education levels. You should see the voting demographics of the 19th election.
Obama talks in a way that appeals to modern, educated, accomplished, reasoning Americans.
No. A man that appeals to divisive identity politics is not "reasoning" in anyway. Neither are the journalists and corporations that support such policies that come from it, which is not modern and heavily uneducated. Spatting put journalistic nonsense is not an accomplishment.
Different strokes for different folks . . . some on the right side of history and the winning side of the culture war, others on the wrong side of history and the losing end of the culture war.
And as November 8th will show, you are on the wrong side.
We are not the ones who pushed divisive racism like CRT.
We aren't the ones who advocated unscientific, untruth and uneducated nonsense like transgenderism.
We aren't the ones rewarding deserters and cowards.
We don't support school policies that result in a median 0.13 GPA score in Baltimore and terrible scores and unpreparedness from public schools.
We didn't spend and waste billions on the failed war on poverty just to keep many African-Americans and others poor.
That was YOU. All coming from your side, kiddo. Repent!
He's the closest thing to a real life Chauncey Gardener.
Why won't these two just go away? Oh, yeah, the money from the free market they're raking in.
Capitalism sucks, unless it benefits me!
Crony capitalism is even better.
One thing you can never take away from Obama is that he ended racism in America. You may not remember how bad it was during the Bush years, but when's the last time you heard anything at all on the subject?
That’s honestly my biggest problem with Obama’s presidency. He was in the catbird seat to drive unity in this country and instead he decided to drive division.
Division is a way better strategy for vote getting than unity.
It's also the way of the Chicago machine. Hard core crony politics.
Remember, the first thing they did before Obamacare was to psss a massive pork program with "shovel ready" projects to "help" the economy. When that idea was floated the Republicans wanted to have input and Obama's chief of staff absolutely refused with the words "Fuck them. We have the votes."
Poisoned the well the very moment he took office. And many, many times during later years in office. Which is why he never got anything done legislatively after the ACA debacle.
I'm starting to think that the disgusting pig with a big fat ass Michelle Yomomma may be running for president in '24. If not, these creeps are the most venal, shallow narcissists on the planet.
Why don't you two scumbags go back to Hawaii or Chicago or Kansas or New York or Indobesis or wherever the fuck it is you actually come from already.
That wookie would be obliterated by any competent candidate in a debate. Assuming that Dems will return to debating any time soon.
Calling it here - Fetterman will not show for his scheduled debate with Oz next week.
I'm not going to take that bet. There's too good a chance you're right.
The fact that a candidate like Oz is even struggling against that addlebrained dude says something. Don't know if it's showing us the religiously clinging to party brands over candidates, or that the Republican machine is a clownshow if the best they put forward is Oz who can't beat a stroke victim who lives in his mom's basement.
There was a crackadoodle named Kathy Barnette who got about 20% of the vote in the PA primary. Without her, McCormick would have crushed Oz.
Democracy is messy. I guess.
But man this race is nuts. These guys campaign like old people fuck. Fits of ineffective activity interspersed with long periods of confused indecision.
The GOP is a clown show at this point. They were already on the skids, then the Trump-suckers managed to purge anyone with a hint of competence or principle. Oz is a great example. Seriously, they're running a candidate who managed to reduce himself from a highly regarded surgeon to a TV quack? And he's somehow not even the worst candidate they're running. Gerrymandering and Dem incompetence are the only reasons they haven't been obliterated.
Obama begins by claiming that he does his own income taxes, saying, “It’s actually easy.”
I think he’s joking, but it’s not clear.
“I’m amazing at them,” Obama continues hours later. “You can be, too, if you use the helpful tools found at IRS.gov.”
What an asshole
People pay $700 an hour for my expertise because taxes are easy.
We just like you
Sure it is not due to you being dead sexy and all?
I’d be confident about doing my taxes too if I knew there was no chance I’d ever be audited. You know, like a fucking Obama.
Doing your own taxes is incredibly easy. Getting it right is the hard part. I guarantee you that if he does his own he gets it wrong.
I sit down every year with a pencil, calculator, and my computer's spread sheet program and do my income taxes. It really not that difficult for the average person. What I get from that experience is both an understanding of my own finances and an understanding of how overly complicated our tax code is. It not scary or that time consuming. The process is made overly scary by people invested in having you buy their tax software or use their services. What happen when you make and error, and I have on occasion, the IRS sends you a letter asking for a correction. They don't threaten you or have you arrested, they send you a letter, just like a business would if you made an error paying you bill.
So, does President Obama do his own taxes, sure why would he not do them?
The average person has solely W-2 income rather than millions of dollars in LLC income.
The average person has a W2, many like the President have a retirement annunity that would be reported on a 1099. Many have saving and investments, stocks and municipal funds, again reported on a 1099. I am sure the President sits on boards, is paid and likely get a report from them. The only thing out the ordinary are book royalties and speaking fee.
I'm sure he in now way looks for ways to pay less. In fact, I'm sure he pays extra because he thinks the feds do such a great job with his money. Jeez.
I think that everyone understands that the tax code is overly complicated, and they don't need to do their own taxes to understand that.
I think the average person wants to avoid paying too much, so that's why they think the process is "overly scary". Hiring a professional or using software to make sure they can use every advantage and every loophole seems like a good idea to me.
True, if you just have W2 and a few 1099 for your income it's not that difficult.
One thing that drives me nuts is the line-based arithmetic, with no overall context given. Just give me the entire f’ing calculation you want me to use in one succinctly-stated formula.
Also, I don’t ever feel like I “get an overall picture”. I used to feel I could accurately project what my taxes will be for the upcoming year. Now, it’s like I have no f’ing clue where the final numbers will land.
I agree wholeheartedly with this comment. The way they do the arithmetic drives me crazy.
BTW - if you think there is only one way to do arithmetic you have never used an old HP calculator where it is done in RPN. That said RPN is easier to understand than IRS arithmetic.
One you go RPN, you don't go back.
Yes. Fewer keystrokes, and the ability to correct mistakes without starting over. But it’s impossible to get people to use it enough to get comfortable.
Some current calculators use RPN (e.g, the flagship HP12C).
The best example is the amount of social security benefits that are considered taxable income. The IRS doesn’t even try to explain it. They say things like “up to 85% of benefits may be taxable.” To actually figure it out they have a supplemental form that epitomizes Mike’s point. It’s almost impossible to figure out what’s going on. I have an Excel spreadsheet to do tax planning, and it took me about an hour, using trial and error, to figure it out. (Note: vast internet searches failed to find any source that actually explained the calculation)
A great example of a too complex tax code. Its 85% for most people but not all and you have to figure out what your own personal case is. Remember Congress writes the tax code and the person who added this to the tax bill should be removed.
BTW - there is talk of means testing for SS in the future, but that is exactly what happens on your taxes today.
So, does President Obama do his own taxes, sure why would he not do them?
The issue for me isn't/wasn't so much complexity as much as Obama's fairly blatant white privilege flex. Yes, it's easy for someone who's a natural born US citizen, who makes hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars a year to sit down and do their taxes. Sitting down themselves, sitting down with their FA, $750K/yr., $1.5M/yr.... it's all relatively moot. That's why it's called 'Fuck you.' money.
The real trouble comes in when you're a foreign-born gig worker married to a native-born taco truck owner with maybe-maybe not DACA dependents or you're a
hoodlumBLM protestor, selling drugs part time and looting clothing stores the rest. You had the pen and the phone Chocolate Jesus, how many of the meek did you cure of their confusion? You’ve had errors? So you admit it’s not as easy as you’re saying.
I have filed taxes for over 50 years, so I think a few errors are acceptable. But I do agree that it is much more complicated than it needs to be. I think that tax services shield the code from the public which might raise a hackle if people could see how complex taxes are.
They don’t threaten you or have you arrested, they send you a letter, just like a business would if you made an error paying you bill.
A business can't have you arrested if you don't pay the invoice. The IRS can. The threat is implied.
...theft of services is an arrestable crime in many instances?
I mean i agree with ur point but im j/s
And if all else fails, they have agents who are certified to be willing to shoot to kill. Not even Comcast has those.
I get a better return when I pay someone to do my taxes or I owe less if it goes that way. Plus it takes an entire work day so 8 hours.
Netflix sucks and isn't worth 15 bucks a month.
"I get a better return when I pay someone to do my taxes "
How do you know this? This is what the tax services are selling, I like to see them prove that it is true.
I know at least some have offered this as a service in the past: do your taxes yourself, bring them in and they'll see if they can save you money. For a while, they (some) were even using it as a recruiting tool.
It would be interesting to see the results of this offer. What I am seeing on Google is that the average cost for tax preparation is between $100 and $200 dollars. That means that a person or couple would need to save more than that to begin to see real savings.
I would add that I do my taxes as part of my annual financial review, so it is not really a lot of extra work on my part.
$100-200? That's not much more than what online tax prep software costs you, and running through that takes many hours.
Wouldn't be out of place for a tax prep pro to be able to save someone $50 if they knew a thing or two. Even if they don't, saving Leizl eight hours is a good trade. Opportunity cost.
Not that you care, you're just trolling.
"Not that you care, you’re just trolling."
Needs regular repeating.
I enjoy doing sums and have more leisure time than I know what to do with. A tedious use of time, to me, is the hiring process of and interaction with a servant.
"...A tedious use of time, to me, is the hiring process of and interaction with a servant."
What do you reckon shitbag here considers an MD?
I bet it's just as full of bullshit, half-truths, and terrible attempts at comedy as "Adam Ruins Everything".
Yes. It's deceitful and dishonest, like everything else Adam Conover has ever done. He's a mendacious prick. And the whole thing has the stink of grift, rewarding Obama by Netflix paying him millions to produce propaganda in exchange for Net Neutrality, which ostensibly benefitted streaming services.
They’ve got Average Joe Dipshit Voter’s statute of limitations calculated to machine precision on this grift.

You have the nerve to call us "faux libertarian right-wingers and anti-government cranks" when you want a Big totalitarian leftist government? How does that make you better? It doesn't. That thinking of yours is worth fighting against.
I'm guessing Netflix hasn't lost enough customers yet. The last loss was in the millions.
probably could have polled the comments section to see whether we needed you to take this bullet for us.
Stossel and Reason have been clearly and correctly documenting both the massive, serious harm government has done over the decades and the rare, minor examples of good from government activities with very little evidence of influencing a trend towards restraining or rolling back the travesties committed in the name of "helping" us. Although I'm glad they continue to shine a bright light and heap scorn upon the "G Word" it's an uphill battle with few victories to show for it. We should all immediately start demanding and spending every spare moment and resource to achieve proportional representation through ranked-choice, at-large elections in every state.
"I'm amazing at them," Obama continues hours later. "You can be, too, if you use the helpful tools found at IRS.gov."
His arrogance is fucking astonishing.

Who in the world would watch a show like this? Those seeking death by boredom?
'...the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspected meat with a crude process called "poke and sniff."'
Insert crude, juvenile "poke and sniff" joke here.
LOL
C'mon, Man! That's Biden's Modus Operandi! 🙂
"Netflix Teams Up With the Obamas To Produce Big Government Propaganda"
[...]
"The G Word, a new documentary, only occasionally covers serious issues. But it opts not to do honest reporting."
The problem is right there in the headline; Obo might be able to separate truth from lies, but you can't tell from his words.
"Big government" is a propagandistic term.
Governments are sovereign. There are bigger and smaller versions of that? Whom do you want to fill the power vacuum you would create by reducing the sovereignty of government? Dumb question?
The beauty of things like safety regulations is that if capitalism really does work like you claim it works, they'd all be perfectly redundant and therefore not oppressive. If capitalism produced better standards on its own, no regulation would even be noticed, and one would wonder why anyone thought they were necessary in the first place.
What does it feel like to live totally according to a fairy tale? Maybe it feels marvelous and childlike. Stossel sure writes like a child. This isn't a thesis about political philosophy. This is the statement, "I need things to be simple in order to understand them."
Here's shitbag publicly displaying his idiocy yet once more.
With very, very few exceptions (most of Ken Burns' work, for instance) nearly all modern "documentaries" are dishonest exercises in propaganda.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), "not a name you normally hear after the words 'did a great job.'"
"Did a great job FEMA"
"FEMA did a great job"
Hmmm...
this philosophy that the free market should be trusted over the government.
You mean objective fact?
