Rising Grocery Prices Pushed Annual Inflation to 8.3 Percent in August
Even as gas prices continued to tumble, rising prices for food and housing pushed inflation higher in August and proved that prices aren't cooling off yet.

After a one-month break, inflation took off again in August as prices rose by 0.1 percent overall despite falling gas prices.
Prices have climbed by 8.3 percent over the past 12 months, according to the consumer price index (CPI) data released Tuesday morning by the Department of Labor. That's down from the 8.5 percent mark in July, but the uptick in August's monthly figure seemingly puts an end to hopes that prices were finally cooling after a year of increases, the likes of which hadn't been seen since the 1970s.
But, wait, how can inflation be rising and yet be down from the tallies announced in both June and July? That's because the annualized rate—the 8.3 percent number—is the sum of the past 12 monthly figures. Prices rose by 0.1 percent in August, but this month's annualized rate drops from last August's monthly rate of 0.3 percent. So the annual figure declined even though inflation rose last month.
The specifics of Tuesday's report are more important—and possibly even worse—than the topline figure. So-called "core CPI," which filters out the more volatile categories like food and fuel prices, rose by 0.6 percent in August. In short, falling gasoline prices helped to offset broader and more pernicious inflation across the rest of the economy.

This is in some ways the reverse of the situation the country faced earlier this year. In March and April, for example, high and quickly rising gas prices were driving overall inflation. Now, gas prices are declining, but inflationary pressure has moved along to other areas of the economy—areas where it is likely to be harder to extinguish.
After a month where it was low, core inflation comes in hotter than expected.
But what stands out to me is that it's right in line with the average value from October 2021 through June 2022 - core has been, sadly, consistent as it shifted from goods to services. pic.twitter.com/nWEeVKhfmJ

"This is a much much worse CPI report than anyone was expecting," wrote University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers on Twitter. "Basically last month's optimism has been countered by this month's pessimism."
While falling prices at the gas pump will be a positive for consumers, Wolfers noted, persistently rising food prices are a major issue. Groceries—which fall under the "food at home" category in the CPI report—are up by a whopping 13.5 percent in the past year, significantly higher than overall inflation.
Falling gas prices, resolving supply chain snafus, and higher interest rates will continue to put downward pressure on inflation. Unfortunately, politicians are still throwing bundles of cash out the metaphorical windows—and, as always, the recipe for inflation is more money chasing the same pile of goods and services.
Much of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan stimulus package hasn't been spent yet and will continue to drive inflation. Meanwhile, economists warned unsuccessfully that President Joe Biden's scheme to forgive up to $20,000 in student loans for some borrowers would trigger more inflation—that's not responsible for August's uptick in inflation, of course, so we've still got that to look forward to.
Americans continue to tell pollsters that inflation is their top concern, and with good reason. Tuesday's report will only add to those worries. Unfortunately, this is a serious conundrum for our current crop of federal elected officials to solve, since it can't be fixed by spending more money.

We need to spend more money to bring down inflation !

Durbin just said it is revisionist rewriting of history to blame spending.

Ryan Young was an idiot then, and probably remains an idiot now.
A boehm disciple for sure.
Dipshit Boehm is "confused" because the recent declines in gas prices haven't correlated to reduced inflation.
Hey Billy, maybe it's because fuel prices are still double what they were prior to the installation of the mental potato you wanted in the White House.
But, I guess that sort of understanding of rates of change and second order effects requires mental capacity that both you and he lack.
Declines in gas prices. Heh. Still well over five bucks here.
Always vote progressive. It's how you get a carbon neutral utopia -- because you can't afford energy at all.
It's still near or over $4.00 up here in Northern Michigan.
Where in the following does it say (a) Boehm "wanted" Biden in the White House; (b) that he ever bothered to register to vote in which Biden was winning by a non-trivial margin?
"ERIC BOEHM
Reporter
Who do you plan to vote for this year? I am currently not registered to vote in Virginia, where I live. If I change that before the election, I will vote for Jo Jorgensen—unless I believe there is a chance that Joe Biden will somehow fail to win Virginia, in which case I will vote strategically and reluctantly for Biden."
Gas prices are lower because there's less actual gas in it. Most of what you pump now is 20-25% ethanol (which is why you barely smell gas anymore). Funny thing is the ethanol results in less fuel efficiency which means you use more gas. But hey, Sleepy Joe gets to claim victory now.
No it is not. The ethanol level is still where it's been for the last umpteen years.
E10 is 10%, E15 is 15% and only E85 will contain up to 85% .
Here in the Midwest, where most of the ethanol production is located, mostly in Iowa, most gasoline is E10.

When it really comes down to it, food is the only wiggle room most people have in their budget. Bills are bills. Can only reduce gas, water and electricity usage so much. So food is really the only part of the budget that a person can really control.
People like to whine when prices at the pump go up, but that's peanuts compared to the amount of money people spend on food.
And I don't know about the rest of you, but I've certainly changed my eating habits as a result of this inflation. Can hardly afford to eat out anymore, and I'm making burgers instead of steaks.
I don't understand why this isn't a bigger deal. Maybe because there's no Big Food to get mad at?
/sarc on
“Can only reduce gas, water and electricity usage so much. So food is really the only part of the budget that a person can really control.”
So a person can’t only reduce food usage too much? You can just stop eating, as opposed to gas and electricity that we just can’t do without?
/sarc off
That has to be one of the single dumbest replies to one of my posts that I have ever read in my entire life.
You can control your food budget because you can choose to stay home instead of eating out, and save money. You can buy burger instead of steak, and save money. You can stretch out the expensive meat by making stews or stir fry, and save money.
You can't similarly save money on gas and electricity.
Are you trying to be dumb? Seriously.
/sarc on
The price of ground beef is even too much for me to afford. Have you checked the prices lately?Hamburger is garbage anyway.
/sarc off
For the cost of dinner for two at a decent restaurant one can buy groceries to feed the same people for a week or two.
Is there some way to similarly save on electricity or gas? I didn't think so.
So food inflation is a big deal, since it's the only part of the budget where people have some real control over how much they spend.
/sarc on
For the cost of heating your home for a year, you can buy a big furry coat.
If you’re going to be an obnoxious asshole, you can at least not be stupid and wrong.
I guess that's why so many working families are having to rely on food banks now...they're eating out far too often. It's why so many families are financing their food purchases with credit cards.
Just remember Boehm, you reluctantly voted for this when you pulled the lever for Biden. Thanks....chump.
Boehm is a Koch-funded libertarian whose primary objective is to make Charles Koch even richer. He's getting exactly what he wanted from the Biden Era.
#VoteDemocratToHelpCharlesKoch
I can't wait for Reason's leading liberal capitalist Mr. Buttplug to storm into this topic and set the record straight.
He'll explain that the Biden economy is the best ever and that HAPERINFLATION is a wingnut.com lie. Because literally the only item whose price has increased since January 2021 is ........ spittin' tobaccy. By 10 cents per pouch.
#DefendBidenAtAllCosts
Inflation is profit!
Whoa, whoa, whoa....Matzos are up too! 🙂
My Streit's matzah is up by more than 10 cents. At least 11 cents. 🙂
I blame Trump. In fact, whatever is bad, I blame Trump. MSNBC and the NYT are always right. It is all Trump's fault.
Not likely to save you when the mob and/or government security forces come for you.
It is easy to forecast that inflation is going higher. I just look through my news feed and note all the articles that talk about how we are past the peak and it is declining. Whatever narrative the media is pushing is the least likely to be the truth.
And no. There is no recession.
Seriously, I saw headlines saying "maybe there will be a recession" as though the economy hasn't been contracting for the last couple quarters.
It's like being gaslighted, but not as clever.
I noticed in Australia they're introducing fried bugs to school children.
Coming soon to America.
Bill Gates is Klaus Schwabe's little organ grinder monkey.
Every day media pundits and Biden supporters try to devise a new way to tell voters that the economy is actually in good shape. Or, they tell us how inflation is something we will actually learn to enjoy. "Just think how much fun you will have getting to know your neighbors as you compete for the good stuff in the corner dumpster" type articles.
Even after today's numbers showing inflation up, wages flat, bank deposits way down, they continue to tell us how great Biden's economy is for the voters. At some point they are going to realize that they can no longer even afford the lipstick to put on that pig.
So, Fatass Donnie and his hand picked Fed Chair dumped trillions of fiscal and monetary stimulus into the economy in 2020. The Sleepy Joe poured fuel on the fire (and he renominated Powell).
So, what would a conservative genius do now that Powell is not doing?
Don't lie to me and tell me Biden banned all fossil fuel production because the US is setting records for oil/gas production.
US oil production remains on track for a record 2023 even as output grows more slowly than anticipated amid surging costs and labor shortages in America’s shale fields.

Rig count still below 2019.

BIDEN OUTLAWED AMERICAN OIL DRILLING! I SEEN HIM DO IT!
British consumer price inflation is set to peak at 18% — nine times the Bank of England’s target — in early 2023, an economist at US bank Citi said on Monday, raising his forecast once again in the light of the latest jump in energy prices.
“The question now is what policy may do to offset the impact on both inflation and the real economy,” Benjamin Nabarro said in a note to clients.
Consumer price inflation was last above 18% in 1976.
Wow, they must really hate Biden in the United Kingdom and all of Europe really - where inflation is highest.
Wingnut.com says European inflation is all because Biden blocked a pipeline extension that never carried any oil.
Wingnut.com has ditched supply/demand factors - it is all about the Canadian tar oil pipeline!
BOOM! The Oracle of Dogdick Georgia hits another home run!
I knew you'd be here to work your #DefendBidenAtAllCosts magic. 🙂
#BestEconomyEver
You should visit Dogdick some time. We just got our first convenience store. It is practically a metropolis now.
And I don't defend Biden. As I have said he is in over his head.
I just don't scream like a howler monkey blaming him for world inflationary forces.
OK, well, just as long as you remain consistent in your assertion that Drumpf was 100% responsible for the bad GDP number in 2020 *BUT* that Biden is totally blameless for any bad economic news 2.5 years after the pandemic started.
#LiberalCapitalism101
Drumpf was 100% responsible for the bad GDP number
I got tired of the TRUMP GOT US THE BEST ECONOMY EVER! bullshit that every Cultist yells nonstop.
Fact is his four year GDP was the worst ever.
Worst ever - you Cultists.
Not bidens fault!!! Also trump caused covid!!!!
No. You defend and deflect constantly. You blame trump for covid and shut downs then give biden every fucking pass you can.
Joe Biden has ALWAYS been in over his head.
You mean there's worldwide inflation and it's not just happening in the US?
Bullshit. That's just running cover for Biden. Saying there's inflation around the world is the same as saying Biden had nothing to do with inflation in this country.
Only a leftist would say that.
The howler monkeys are all screaming BIDENS FAULT!
Yet no one can discuss it because of the howler monkeys.
Natural gas has tripled here in the US from $3 mBtu to $8.30mBtu today.
but it is over $50 in Europe.
They're fucked in Europe.

And we're producing record amounts of natural gas here - up about 20% in 4-5 years.
Almost like it's some derangement syndrome or something. Nah.
Speaking of Biden Derangement Syndrome, what happened to Ken?
He flipped out when I pointed out his argument of "Republicans are mere authoritarians while Democrats are totalitarians, and that's so much worse so vote for Republicans" amounted to "Vote authoritarian rah rah rah" and decided to sulk elsewhere.
I can guarantee you that lame horse you beat here every day isnt what made Ken leave lol. I think most of us debate whether to make fun of you for how lame of an argument it is (and point out how stupid it is), vs scrolling past for the 1000th time.
Nardz broke him over Ukraine.
Hope Ken comes back.
This is you just above.
Fact is his four year GDP was the worst ever.
Blaming trump for covid.
“Build back better” was an international slogan. So was locking down economies everywhere for years.
Of course Build Back Better got passed as a slimmed down Inflation Reduction Act a month ago (the name is a sham). AFTER inflation was surpassing 8%.
So you cannot blame that.
But your point is sound. All that STIMULUS set the fire.
Was it Fat Donnie's CARES Act? His PPP?
Or Biden's American Rescue Plan?
And the shutdowns seriously hurt supply. Remember Donnie told my Governor in Georgia he was reopening too quickly.
CORONAVIRUS
Trump says he told Kemp: ‘I totally disagree’ with move to reopen Georgia
The governor’s decision drew a backlash from critics who pointed to indicators that the state’s number of new cases was still on an upward trajectory.
An honest person would say "All of the Above"
Trump sucked. Biden picked up that baton from him.
One problem here....inflation took off in earnest post passage of the oddly named rescue plan. Meaning, May 2021.
Shrike is an open globalist supporting OSF. His arguments are just reprints of the latest newsletter.
Check this out.

Facts are leftist.
Trolling with kiddie porn posting SPB for attention? You really are a $0.50 whore.
MISINFORMATION!!!
I have been told, by senior administration figures familiar with the situation, that there is no inflation. In fact, a recently passed bill specifically lowers the already cured inflation even more.
(And you should use the core figure because no one buys groceries or gasoline)
Amazing, the dumb, poorly educated fugazi libertarians of Reason still don't get it. Most of them actually still believe that inflation is primarily caused by rising fuel prices and supply chain issues.
How many times do I have to explain to you dummies that those aren't the main causes of inflation? The main cause of inflation is the government and the Federal Reverse creating too much "free" money out of thin air and injecting it into the system for too long, same as the last time we had to go through this shit more than forty years ago. Stop getting your entire life education from MSNBC and the Atlantic and try reading a fucking book written by an actual intelligent person for a change!
To their credit, the Fed is now trying like heck to reverse course and undo the inevitable results of their overly long and excessive loose monetary policy they carried on for 13 years. But they have a ferocious battle on their hands because the assholes in power like Sleepy Joe are determined to spend until we bend and borrow like there's no tomorrow on everything under the sun they can possibly think of.
Really Mikey?
The Fed went through massive QE in the 1970's?
The worst economic period back then was 1981-82. In fact Carter's jobs numbers were very good.
Of course Powell has us on the same track as Volcker back then. So we are due for another big recession.
Yes. It actually started in the late 60s, and Richard Nixon of all people and the Fed guys at the time were the worst offenders. The first real massive devaluation of the U.S. dollar was in 1971, when it was completely declined from gold and became a full-fledged fiat currency for the first time. Nixon may have been a die-hard cultural conservative, but economically he was a full-fledged big spending liberal Keynesian. And the loose money policies continued right through Ford, Carter, and into early Reagan, until Paul Volcker finally decided that enough was enough.
Of course it's entirely understandable that you wouldn't know any of this. Like most people, you don't much of anything at all, particularly regarding history. It's partly the fault of our shitty ass education system which doesn't teach any of this stuff at all, but you can always read a book or two on your own.
QE is not the same as closing the gold window, numbnuts.
Btw, gold is falling again today. Down $200 since Biden was sworn in.
Some Carter he is not.
Biden is worse than Carter....owing to his corruption and venality.
worse than that, a young, brand new member of congress Biden not only got to watch Carter shit his pants, but openly made criticisms of him at the time.
To see him go on, follow in Carter's footsteps, make the same mistakes and much worse, is hilarious. The only way he won't be remembered as Carter 2.0 at this point is if the media launches a full on campaign to retcon his entire presidency for the next decade.
........but the resulting printing was the same as QE. Closing the gold window allowed the printing.
You should know this much simply by hanging out here so often.
Fuck Joe Biden

Gas prices are down, but here's why Americans are still feeling the sting of inflation:
.
Food at home up 13.5% in past year - largest since 1979
Rent is up 6.7% in past year - largest since 1986
Electricity up 15.8% - largest since 1981
Health insurance 24.3% - largest ever inc
And Joe is celebrating the "Inflation Reduction Act" today.
The problem here is, the Republicans can hardly criticize the Dems excess spending because they're nearly as bad. Ditto for Fed monetary policy. Until the GOP is willing to make a serious change in their party platform, to address spending and long term Fed policy, we'll continue to get more of the same.
Sure, inflation will subside a bit, but we're heading down a path that is likely past the point of no return. And, it won't end well.
...Republicans can hardly criticize the Dems...
HERESY! BURN HIM! BURN HIM ALIVE!!!!
Jesus, you really are broken.
If inflation seems bad today, wait a couple of weeks, when the rail strike makes just about everything scarce on retail shelves.
A tentative agreement was announced today with the railroad workers. So a strike may be avoided.
However BNSF was moving locos in mass numbers out of certain areas.
Wait and see.
Great news says the Biden Administration we have leveled of at 8.5% inflation annually for now. So time to fire up the money printing presses and pay off student loans and give Ukraine billions, that will get that inflation rate to rising again like they want.
It's obvious some people haven't been inside a grocery store lately or they're shopping at a discount seconds store.
The price of everything has in some cases doubled including the cheapest cuts of meat as well as chicken. It's absolutely crazy.
Of course it doesn't help when 20 food processing plants mysteriously catch fire and burn down, fertilizer becomes scarce and farmers can't afford diesel or fertilizer.....
But is not to worry, the WEF will make sure you get your daily allowance of bugs to eat and you will be happy.
