Americans View Marijuana Much More Favorably Than Alcohol
Plus: college majors shifting, Klobuchar's media bill, and more...

What Americans think about marijuana in 2022. More Americans than not now say marijuana benefits those who use it. In a recent Gallup poll, 53 percent of Americans said marijuana use has a positive effect on people, while just 45 percent said it has a negative effect. Asked whether it has a positive effect on society, respondents were near evenly split (49 percent yes, 50 percent no).
Interestingly, Americans' views of marijuana are much more positive than their views of alcohol. In the same July poll, 75 percent said alcohol negatively affects society and 71 percent said it has a negative effect on those who consumer it.
Fifty-five percent said the effect of alcohol was "somewhat negative," and 20 percent said it was "very negative." For marijuana, only 31 percent said "somewhat negative" and 19 percent "very negative."
The latest poll was conducted in July among a random sample of 1,013 U.S. adults. (The margin of error is plus or minus 4 to 5 percentage points, depending on the question.)
Perceptions of marijuana were influenced by whether poll respondents had tried it, with those who had much more likely to describe its benefits on users and society as positive. Seventy percent of people who had ever tried marijuana said it had a positive effect on users (compared to 35 percent of those who had never tried it) and 66 percent said it had a positive effect on society (compared to 27 percent of those who had never tried it).
About half—48 percent—of respondents said they had tried marijuana at some point.
"The rate was 4% when Gallup first asked about it in 1969, climbed to 24% by 1977, was 33% in 1985 and had crossed the 40% threshold by 2015," reports Gallup. The rise is stunning, even if it's surely influenced in part by a greater number of people being willing to admit they have tried it.
About 16 percent of those surveyed said they currently consume marijuana—the highest percentage Gallup has ever recorded, although not a big rise over the 12 percent who said as much last year.
Support for marijuana legalization is even more widespread. Some 68 percent of those surveyed support legalization, tied for the record high with Gallup's November 2021 poll.
Just the latest reminder that U.S. drug policy is way out of step with American habits and opinions.

Trump team offers confusing narrative about document hoarding. Former President Donald Trump's lawyers "have offered up a variety of arguments" in defense of his keeping classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, reports The New York Times. "Often tinged with Mr. Trump's own bombast and sometimes conflating his powers as president with his role as a private citizen, the legal arguments put forth by his team sometimes strike lawyers not involved in the case as more about setting a political narrative than about dealing with the possibility of a federal prosecution."
On Friday, the Justice Department released the affadvait used to get a search warrant of Mar-a-Lago in the first place. Because the "search warrant affidavit is heavily redacted, it does not resolve lingering questions about the FBI's justification for searching former President Donald Trump's residence at his Palm Beach resort," notes Reason's Jacob Sullum. "But the document does shed some light on the circumstances that led to the August 8 search."

New data reveal the rise and fall of various college majors. The data—from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System—show that majors in history, religion, English, language and literature, and area studies (e.g., gender studies) continued to fall, while majors in philosophy continued to rebound after falling for many years. Majors experiencing the biggest rise include aeronautics, criminology, law, computer science, exercise science, and psychology.

They seek to use antitrust and the force of the government to protect the companies and industries they prefer." More here.

* NYT
Is it just me or do you get the sense that ENB wakes up in the morning, opens the laptop and goes to the NYT front page, then begins copying and pasting the links? Then it is onto her Blue Check Twitteratti feed.
I'm guessing the hardest part of the morning lynx is de-duping stories on NYT and her Twitter feed.
Yes, way too many easy links from NYT and WaPo. Just phoning it in.
Unless there's a piece on prostitutes we're lucky if she links anything other than Reason articles.
And I can only guess stupid, annoying things about what NYT doublespeak means by "love".
"Learn to love Big Brother with these three simple tricks!"
I heard my Zoomer daughter use this recently describing the relationship between her boyfriend and his mother. "Her (BF's mom) love language is giving him (BF) money".
Sounds more like codependency.
The NYT is the paper of record for the left. It is a primary source for their narratives and beliefs. If you rely on others to tell you what's in the NYT, you sacrifice the ability to form your own opinions.
Sun Tzu wrote, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Yeah, we all need more exposure to the narratives of the NYT. It’s all such a secret.
Continue to eschew the New York Times (and the Post, and other strong mainstream sources) and stick with NewsMax, FreeRepublic, RedState, Stormfront, Fox News, Instapundit, Gateway Pundit, the crusader, and Truth Social, R Mac . . . and watch how the marketplace of ideas continues to shape the American culture war and our national progress (against the wishes and efforts of conservatives).

Since I live in the D.C. area, if use the Washington Post to know what the enemy thinks. The comments actually show a creepier side of the Left than the articles, and that's saying a lot right there.
The comments are beyond insane at WaPo. That point is even more interesting when you think about how heavily moderated their comments are.
There are only four lights. At this point, subjecting yourself to any more of this woke nonsense is masochistic and not remotely informative.

I had never seen that before either. Apparently it's Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, And Medicine.
Not clear when this started as an acronym.
2020, no doubt.
Medicine used to be Science. Then public health officials got involved and changed the definition of hospitalization, efficacious, vaccine, and how they record cause of death. So, yeah, 2020.
Math shouldn't be on there. Science, tech, engineering, medicine.
Math is important - but it's strictly academia and the number of slots for 'professional mathmetician' is so paltry and the requirements so steep, that they're headhunting *you*.
Most of the math that is important (statistics, calculus, weird multidimensional spaces, etc) is already covered by the STEM education anyway.
Lots of work for Math majors with some coding skills these days. It's a not uncommon major for algorithm guys, folks coding for banking and investment, and machine learning folks.

How do you think they got to be billionaires?
Not by running newspapers. Last I saw billionaires take a loss on those papers but continue running them since they're useful mouthpieces.

So I often feel an obligation to take a Devil's Advocate position:
Because there's long been a legal and social stigma around marijuana consumption that doesn't exist for alcohol, I suspect people's feelings are more of a pushback. Yes, there exist medicinal purposes of marijuana, but where we would be without medical usage of alcohol, as well?
There's also a lot of societal good that comes from alcohol consumption, even though it carries significant costs as well.
There is also very strong science that says pot does terrible things to adolescents who smoke it. It is a very powerful drug and not particularly good for anyone.
I bet you are fun at parties.
I am. If I wasn't, I wouldn't understand what a lousy drug pot really is. Drunks can be obnoxious and violent but they can also be a good time. Stoners are never a good time. It can be fun to be stoned but it is only fun for you not anyone else.
The science about its effect on adolescents is what it is. Look it up. It also seems to do bad things to people with existing mental illness.
The Science!
Yes. Go look it up.
https://blog.cord.edu/cobbersonthebrain/2021/10/11/how-does-marijuana-affect-the-adolescent-brain/
It is easy to find. The facts are what they are.
The facts are that since pot is illegal at the federal level that any study on the subject is suspect since by and large it's difficult for 'science' to study illegal drugs. Especially in an impartial manner. We've seen almost a hundred years of government studies on pot proving it does all kinds of things that are straight up false.
People can apparently think environmental studies by oil companies are automatically suspect but drug studies performed at the behest of governments that make those drugs illegal are a-ok.
I wouldn't say there aren't any negative costs associated with pot, but to pretend that those negative consequences are on par with alcohol that kills thousands of people a year is pretty rich. It's also noteworthy that governments love to attribute deaths to pot that are ridiculous whereas deaths associated with alcohol aren't usually in question.
Pot isn't as widely used nor as thoroughly studied as alcohol. So, you really can't compare. We are not living the counter factual where people smoke pot as much as they drink now and drink as much as they smoke pot. So, you can't make the comparison.
Even if alcohol is more harmful, that doesn't make pot any less harmful.
You're not wrong that smoking pot is probably not as widespread, even though it's probably more widespread than we think, but that has no bearing on anything I said. Believe it or not, pot wasn't discovered yesterday.
Just because pot isn't as studied as alcohol doesn't mean we don't have a pretty good idea of the relative harms. In fact, since most of the studies that HAVE been done on pot were done by government specifically to find harms yet they found it necessary to objectively lie about it it's fairly safe to say that they found very little to truthfully demonize in pot.
TL;DR: If there are harms, such as those that are easily observable with alcohol, we would actually know this by now with even the sample size we currently have available.
It should be safe to say that kids in particular probably shouldn't do any drugs, although in the modern era it's also notable that kids are routinely drugged up with way more psychoactive substances than ever before and those are literally prescribed medications that likely have a more profound effect on brain development than THC.
Thus the idea that pot in particular is associated with known or certain harms is essentially a fallacy supported by a host of half-truths.
Pot isn't as widely used nor as thoroughly studied as alcohol. So, you really can't compare.
Yes, you can. Alcohol is poisonous. It damages literally everybody who has more than one drink a day for a any extended time, and demonstrably kills people and ruins their lives in ways most everybody has experienced directly in one way or another.
I cannot begin to tell you the levels of destruction wrought by alcohol on my own family. It's painfully obvious to any observer how destructive it can be. While the government has been actively trying for 100 years now to show how harmful pot is and they've produced bupkiss other than some fairly questionable "it may not be great for children" and "lots of schizophrenics use it" studies that you're claiming are definitive in the same breath that you're declaring that we just don't know enough about pot to say whether it's less dangerous than alcohol.
I don't see how the fact that you come from a family of degenerates really says much about this subject. Sorry your family sucks but that doesn't say anything about anyone else.
I suspected that Briggs was a sock or otherwise a concern troll, glad that he pulled off the mask.
I don't see how the fact that you come from a family of degenerates really says much about this subject.
You don't see much, it seems. But what it shows to the rest of us is what an idiotic statement it is to say something like "you can't really say whether or not pot is safer than alcohol."
Given the choice between admitting you haven't the foggiest idea what you're talking about and insulting me for the personal tragedies I've experienced, you choose the latter, which says a lot about you.
It can be fun to be stoned but it is only fun for you not anyone else.
Probably says more about you. My "stoner" (most people I know don't stick to one or the other) friends are a hoot and a holler.
That being said, your correct that it has negatives. Adolescents shouldn't take any mind altering chemicals including alcohol. And those who have serious mental illness should avoid marijuana and also alcohol.
Pretty much that. By the time you are an adult, it doesn't seem to have any long term effect. But it does on kids.
Fun fact: something like 80% of schizophrenics smoke cigarettes. Psychology still doesn't have a great answer for why.
Additional fun fact: lots of people who do have 'serious mental illnesses' also smoke pot to self-medicate and report that it helps stabilize their moods.
Not necessarily a pro or a con since it's self reported information from crazy people, but notable none the less.
A good question (and I don't know the answer to it) to ask after is, what percentage of cigarette smokers are schizophrenics? I can't imagine it being particularly high.
Tobacco isn't a hallucenagenic drug. There is no reason to think it would make mental illness worse. Pot on the other hand is a bit different.
Pot on the other hand is a bit different.
And is also not a hallucinogenic drug.
I hear mixed on this. I’ve never smoked it, but a friend said that when she did, it had an hallucinogenic effect and she never wanted to use it again.
But I know others who have not had that experience. So I’m not certain I would rule out that pot CAN have hallucinogenic properties for some people.
The point is that the rate of smoking among schizophrenics is incredibly high (70-80 percent) versus the general population, and that nobody knows why that is.
A lot of people like to pretend that we know exactly what's going on in the brain, but the fact of the matter is it's little more than educated guessing most of the time. That may not sit well with some people, but it's the truth.
Most kids are on some form of psychotropic medication and you don't bat an eye despite the fact that every school shooter on record has these types of medications in their system.
lots of people who do have 'serious mental illnesses' also smoke pot to self-medicate and report that it helps stabilize their moods
^
We had an old friend who did that. She had a schizophrenia that manifested in her 20s, and smoking pot took her to weird places, but generally stabilized her mood. Tough call on whether it's a worthwhile tradeoff, but she definitely thought it was.
Personally I don't think it's a great alternative, but it's well worth investigating it since the drugs used to treat conditions like schizophrenia often have side effects that cause people to go off their meds. Perhaps a medication that has fewer side effects that is less effective might be better than someone that just goes off their meds cold turkey, at the very least.
Yeah - it seems to me like it's at least worth looking into what it is that gets the mood stabilized and seeing if it can't be reproduced without the 'lost in the stratosphere' side effects. She would smoke literally all day long, and she would get weirdly obsessive about the things going on in her head, while when she wasn't smoking you got less monologues about her psychic efforts to get Saddam Hussein to come around or whatever, but she was way more wound up and miserable and prone to disappearing for days at a time.
We ought to be able to say 'clearly they're getting something beneficial out of this - we should try to figure out what.'
You need funner pot smokers to hang out with.
Seriously. I'm useless on weed and no longer bother with it, but most of the stoners I know are extremely social while high.
I've had great times drunk with drunks and stoned with stoners. The day after, you get a clear idea of which one is worse for the human body: no study needed.
The day after, you get a clear idea of which one is worse for the human body: no study needed.
^
It's pretty blindingly obvious.
Is there some kind of experiment that doesn’t involve being drunk or stoned?
Ie, drink alcohol without getting drunk vs smoking pot without getting stone.
I’ve been drunk twice in my life. I drink semi-regularly. I don’t experience negative consequences from alcohol unless we are counting the sudden recent onset of post-beer flatulence that has cut that out of my recreational drinking.
I mean, if you are actually smoking marijuana you are getting 80% of the same carcinogens that smoking tobacco gets you. I cannot see how people can think that somehow exchanging nicotine for CBT/THC just obviates the effects of sucking burning leaf into your lungs.
I think amount plays into it. Not counting people that sit around smoking all day, most people that smoke marijuana smoke small amounts at a time. Most people that smoke cigarettes smoke all throughout the day.
Good point.
And yet you'll struggle to find any strong evidence that it causes lung cancer. Could be due to lack of study, but we've had a pretty significant population smoking weed for decades now and it doesn't seem like there's a significant difference in lung cancer in that group vs. the squares.
I can't explain it because your logic is sound; inhaling the smoke should be awful for you.
Studies have shown that, on the one hand, the cigarette smoke contains some particularly aggressive carcinogens that aren't there in pot, and that there seems to be something in the pot smoke that actually prevents cancer to a certain extent.
Got any links? I'd be interested to see those studies.
Looking for something recent, but apparently there's been a trend of people claiming online that cannabis oil cured their cancer, which the medical community seems pretty fixated on debunking at the moment (unsurprisingly), so searching "cannabis cancer" contains a lot of not at all what I'm looking for in recent years, but here's a pretty interesting study from about 15 years ago.
This research may not ultimately have gone anywhere, as I haven't heard much about it since.
I hate it when the google buries real results like that!
Thanks for the link.
Is tobacco smoking cancer rates different in pipe or self rolled vs cigarette/cigar?
I’d think the way pot is recreationally used would be closer to the former than the latter.
Lack of overwhelming scientific evidence is largely lack of study.
It's a difficult thing to study when it's treated at the level it is, federally. Likewise, you're going to have some real problems ferreting out the relative effects of cigarettes and marijuana in existing studies as the crossover is likely to be high and reporting spotty and heavily prone to all the errors of self reporting.
It probably would be a good thing to study in greater detail. As would other long term effects of chronic use.
Alcohol is also very harmful to adolescents who start drinking early due to the damage it can do to the liver, and other organs. That's not to mention things like FAS and the obvious risk of drunk drivers.
That said, a glass of wine a day is supposedly good for heart health. Alcohol is good for bonding and increasing camaraderie. How many places have you worked where it was routine to go out for drinks on a Friday night? Or even if there's company activities that aren't explicitly focused on drinking, like having a Bowling Night or just a company picnic, would those be as appealing if people were banned from drinking at them?
Also, that nomikai thing in Japan, where it is generally OK to get drunk and be excused for saying shit about your co-workers and boss.
Better than that - it means you can actually tell the truth to your boss without fearing backlash or a loss of face (to either party). And the convention is that after two drinks you are held to be drunk and hence blameless. It's a marked contrast to Western workplaces where in theory you can be honest and confront your boss on an important issue - and indeed many bosses will claim you can - but in practice you'd have to be a fool to do so.
"Alcohol is also very harmful to adolescents who start drinking early due to the damage it can do to the liver, and other organs."
That is overwraught nonsense.
Sure, binge drinking can be very harmful to adolescents. As with every toxin, it is the dose that matters. But people have been drinking socially- even among kids- for thousands of years. It is merely the fact that the US Protestant style of abstain-binge-abstain cycles encourages binge drinking that we see problems.
The myth that alcohol is this great poison is pushed on us by the same nannies who insist that you are virtually killing your kids if you don't rear face them in a car seat until they are 16.
Sure, binge drinking can be very harmful to adolescents. As with every toxin, it is the dose that matters.
I won't dispute this, but a 16-17 year old binge drinker is doing more long-term damage to their body than someone in their 20s. It gets negated a bit with age, though it never reaches the point of being purely harmless. I have first-hand experience with losing a very close friend to liver and kidney failure at the ripe old age of 25. Now this person was absolutely an alcoholic, who drank basically every day and often to extremes, but most alcoholics who don't start early have more time to kick the habit before their organs start failing.
How many 16-17 year old binge drinkers are also doing other drugs that would be difficult to suss out from the statistics one might ask. Something tells me that type of self-destructive unmonitored youth isn't limiting themselves to just alcohol for the benefit of researchers.
Opportunity is easier with alcohol than other drugs.
"I won't dispute this, but a 16-17 year old binge drinker is doing more long-term damage to their body than someone in their 20s."
By what measure? I want to see the evidence on this.
"Now this person was absolutely an alcoholic, who drank basically every day and often to extremes, but most alcoholics who don't start early have more time to kick the habit before their organs start failing."
It is also likely that they had another compromising condition, such as Hep C or other liver damage. People used to drink alcohol in many cities as the only alternative to water. Those that didn't die in infancy or war typically lived quite long. They certainly weren't keeling over from liver failure at 20 years old.
People used to drink alcohol in many cities as the only alternative to water. Those that didn't die in infancy or war typically lived quite long.
That was very, very weak ale by modern standards.
I agree that the danger to adolescents it probably overstated, as it is with pot - I knew a lot of really heavy drinkers in high school, even quite a few who wound up in various facilities, but most of them grew out of it.
But no, it's not "abstain-binge-abstain" that causes people problems. Yes people have been drinking for thousands of years, and people have known for thousands of years that drinking kills people. Drinking more than a bottle of wine a day for 20 years, whether you're doing "abstain-binge-abstain" or just drinking every day, and you're pretty likely to develop serious health problems.
I've seen this directly kill two close family members, and I have a third with one foot in the grave as we speak.
So, no, it's not a myth that alcohol is poison. It's empirically observable fact.
>That was very, very weak ale by modern standards.
To be fair, this is VERY true of marijuana.
Dope these days is extremely potent stuff compared to the ditch weed kids smoked when I was in school.
And I think the point remains. Whether or not drinking at 16 is worse than drinking in your 20s, the argument would hold more weight if you had some data. Likewise, tragic as it is, chronic excessive alcohol consumption is decidedly not the same as occasional social drinking. A bottle a day is a shitload of wine, way more than a glass a day from a biological standpoint.
I'm not putting this on you, just expressing it, but now that I write it down I bet data on the differences is interesting if it exists.
Dope these days is extremely potent stuff compared to the ditch weed kids smoked when I was in school.
Very true - I recall it being about 1994 when the measure change from 'how many joints/how many bowls' to 'how many hits.'
There's a big difference, though, in that CBD is entirely non-toxic and THC is nearly so. The high potency of the 'new weed' is actually a benefit because it means you smoke less, and the literal smoking is the most unhealthy thing about it.
A bottle a day is a shitload of wine, way more than a glass a day from a biological standpoint.
For sure. I use that metric because that's the volume at which the drinking has about a 50% chance of literally killing you directly rather than through second-order effects. 3-4 glasses of wine or beer a day over the long term will have negative health impacts, but almost certainly won't be your direct cause-of-death.
No one has yet found the amount of CBD or THC consumption that's going to cause you health problems.
Whether or not drinking at 16 is worse than drinking in your 20s, the argument would hold more weight if you had some data.
Since the damage from alcohol tends to be over the long term, it seems like that would be tough data to get a clear angle on.
Anecdotally, the people I knew who drank in high school had more immediate problems with it, but likewise those same people tended to not be drinkers anymore by the time they hit their 20s.
OTOH the people I've known who have literally died from it didn't start drinking in earnest until they were in their 20s.
I also don't care what society thinks. Society has shit views on things.
Now how can you look at voting patterns and say such a thing?
Because there's long been a legal and social stigma around marijuana consumption that doesn't exist for alcohol, I suspect people's feelings are more of a pushback.
The prohibition would like a word with you.
Just make the tobacco users stand outside while we have this debate that doesn't concern them.
Or ot could just be media representation of medical treatment forpaon ridden patients versus drunk driving deaths.
Also, the marijuana vs. alcohol debate rather tidily compartmentalizes and sets aside the, uh, trade offs of setting something on fire inches from your face and inhaling the combustion products frequently, over the course of years.
School districts across Florida have banned around 200 books...
Could burning them be fair behind?
At the rate global warming is going, it's bound to happen spontaneously. Our grandchildren will have no books to read because they will all be on fire.
When CO2 reaches 451 degrees.
If my calculations are correct, you're going to see some serious shit.
Imagine seeing the written word kindled like that!
We all know words and ideas are dangerous.
But silence is violence.
It wasn't satire; that was the fallback position after their lie was exposed.

How about book recycling?
Only the novels—pulp that fiction!
What if they are used to generate electricity?
Could burning them be fair behind?
I suspect after the first frost. FJB wont allow natural gas to be burned this winter.
No links to negative stories about Koch / Reason libertarianism's new arch enemy, Ron DeSantis? That's OK, I have one. 🙂
Charlie Crist, the Democratic nominee for Florida governor, chose the head of the largest teachers union in the Southeast as his running mate — Karla Hernández-Mats. She has said about Gov. Ron DeSantis's attacks on educators, "This is what dictators do."
Smart move by Crist since teachers unions are extremely popular. And the worse DeSantis does now, the less likely he is to be the 2024 Presidential nominee — creating an opening for our benefactor Charles Koch's preferred candidate Liz Cheney.
#LizCheney2024
Good find. Interestingly, the headlines I'd read about this over the weekend just said he was going to have a teacher as his running mate. Not the union head!
Thanks for bringing it to our attention OBL. To paraphrase Warren Zevon, you are a credit to your gender. (Whatever that may be at the moment.)
Psychology is the major for people who want to pretend they understand science, but really are just rationalizing a reason to come to whatever conclusion they made ahead of time.
That describes a lot of majors.
I started out as a psychology major so it's a bit of a personal bugaboo. I'd rather see psychology on the decline because it's so overwhelmed with nonsense and social crusades. Literally only about 10% of all psychological studies manage to be valid and useful. But every week you'll hear about some new poll or study that comes to an outrageous conclusion that is only capturing a local effect or a quirk of the study itself and will never be repeatable.
Even most of the basics I was being taught included bogus studies (like the Stanford Prison Experiment) or flat out sophistry, like Freud's model of human development. There was so little effort to apply critical thinking and the scientific method to actually learn how to research, and a ton of reading about the philosophical models of earlier psychologists. I even took a class on the Psychology of Dreams, which might as well be Astrology.
It is one of mine as well. The bottom line is that here we are well over a century into psychology as a science and we are no better at treating mental illness or even understanding it than we were at the beginning. Of people who are mentally ill, a third get better, a third stay the same, and a third spiral into complete insanity. That was true in 1850 and it is true today. A hundred years of psychology and psychiatry has not changed a thing.
Worse, is that psychology has given us things like Freud and psychoanalysis which is nothing but an excuse for people to rationalize their faults and neurosis. I think Carl Jung and a few others have really added to the state of human understanding. That, however, has come at the price of a whole lot of utter and often damaging nonsense.
A good psychology college would be one that is focused solely on statistics, experimental design and biology. Wipe the slate clean, and acknowledge that we are starting from scratch.
That's pretty much what neuroscience is.
Psychology is bedevilled by issues such as experimental design, quantification, motivated reasoning, etc. There is a respectable science to be found there, but one has to clear away a lot of undergrowth to get to it.
"There is a respectable science to be found there"
And we are all still diligently searching to find it

Philosophy is one of the big ones for the crazy woke PhD's right now. But good to see the overall trend was more useful majors getting an uptick as the major trend.
Every gender studies degree less is one less religious zealot we have to deal with later
It isnt philosophy anymore. It is essentially post modernism.
Why am I getting an itch to re-read Ayn Rand’s “Philosophy: Who Needs It?” speech?
Can we still say that most of the psych and sociology majors are trying for their MRS degree?
The journalism majors conducted a poll and found your statements to be false by a rate of 3 Abe Lincolns to every Napoleon.
Russia and Ukraine traded claims of rocket and artillery strikes at or near Europe's largest nuclear power plant on Sunday...
Whoever is guilty depends on which way the wind is blowing at the moment. LITERALLY.
Turns out it’s the FBI doing it.
Not sure I’d believe anything the media or the US government (but I repeat myself) has to say about any nuclear fear mongering in the UK.
Certainly nothing a UN team of “scientists” has to say either.
“In the Ukraine”
Either way
"Russia and Ukraine traded claims of rocket and artillery strikes at or near Europe's largest nuclear power plant on Sunday, intensifying fears that the fighting could cause a massive radiation leak," the Associated Press reports.
Experts on Twitter told me the Russian Army will collapse any day now because their vehicles got stuck in some mud.
#ButTheUSShouldKeepSpendingBillionsOnUkraine
If we just wave more flags, everything will be fine.
Just make sure that US pro-Ukrainian liberals never learn how racist, sexist, nationalist and just plain MAGA-like the average Ukrainian is.
The funny thing is, a lot of these European countries the left wants to be like have majority white populations with a sense of pride related to their nation/heritage.
Do they know how much they want to be like white nationalists?
What’s up with all the white people in Europe anyway???
They know, because they used to complain about it loudly only a couple of years ago. They just forgot is all.
Because the "search warrant affidavit is heavily redacted, it does not resolve lingering questions about the FBI's justification for searching former President Donald Trump's residence at his Palm Beach resort,"
White House Hollywood staff writers are still formulating the best messaging for preparing the American people for the mid-term "votes".
They had a good reason to do it and all of this damning evidence on Trump. They just haven't leaked all of the, even though they leak everything that can possibly be construed in their favor out of kindness or something.
Even the redacted affidavit was extremely political, leaving in BS that furthered the narrative.
My favorite part is everyone just memory holed the nuclear secrets angle so quickly.
Not much is secret anymore about nuclear stuff.
I mean, "we" (democrat administration) are working hard to be sure Iran gets nukes, what can be the worry?
China learned how to make their nukes by stealing U.S. nuclear secrets, why should any other country be different?
It was like a flashback to 2016 when everyone was worried about Trump having the "nuclear codes" like he was going to start dropping nukes on his first day in office.
Yeah, and then literally WWIII happened.
I remember that. Everyone died.
Again
That was before we all died of COVID 4 times.
I died in high school back in the 1980s. I can’t remember if it was from acid rain or nuclear winter, but it was one of those.
I remember that time I died.
Yeah, then they were annoyed that he didn't start WWIII.
like he was going to start dropping nukes

Time for more mandatory "fairness" classes for all students. Also more student loans. Lots more loans.
What do you call a loan that does not have to be repaid?
Graft.
I think you misspelled 'Grant'. The US has been funding academics for a long time.
That doesn't make it right, but it explains why academia is so heavily invested in politics.

We have, possibly, overdone it with the self-esteem. The prim, grim urban and suburban progressives who today dominate the Democratic Party believe that they are “like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened” — that in spending four or five or six years at Haverford or Bryn Mawr or Michigan State or the University of Texas or some other ghastly inverted cloaca of American intellectual life they have become, in some ineffable way, a national treasure. Sure, they earn a lot more money than the schmucks who drive them to the airport or cut their grass, but they have done the hard work of becoming enlightened — and is not a dedicated leader of the people entitled to his dacha? We have so invested college degrees (even the mediocre ones) with social and quasi-spiritual significance that college graduates have come to regard their time inhaling intellectual flatus in the Dutch ovens of higher education as a kind of national service — and they believe that it is outrageous that they should be expected to pay a little something for it.
I hate upper class, college educated white people. The problem with this country is not immigrants. The problem with this country is college educated whites.
Skin color is the most important thing.
It matters. If it wasn't for them being white, they wouldn't have a white savior complex and be so obsessed with proving themselves to be morally superior to other whites. There is not enough space available here to fully explain the various neurosis of the white upper class. It is because they are white? I don't know. But, as a group, they are a big problem.
You are part of a bigger problem.
Just because generalities are generalities and don't apply to every individual doesn't mean they are invalid or that you cannot make general conclusions about groups of people.
The very definition of racism.
Don't look at me!
Good idea.
It's not college educated whites; it's gentry liberals. They've always been a problem, there's just more of them now.
So you’ve been to my hometown Mountain View, CA
Nah. It's more prosaic than any silly racial explanation. The problem is what it has always been since the turn of the 20th century - progressivism, that twisted ideological hybrid of an ersatz religion and politics as a marker of social status. Plenty of people of all races and educational levels will glom onto it for the same reason they have since its outset, to artificially elevate themselves over their fellows while assigning themselves unearned moral and social status, just as you suggest.
Note, this is not an attack on liberals, who I simply view as wrong on the issues. I'm critiquing a specific and defined ideology.
The problem with this country is college educated white females.
FIFY.
"I hate upper class, college educated white people."
What qualifies as upper class in your hate demographic?
College educated definitely, and primarily white, but also a subset of POC who are far more "white adjacent" than the POC that progressives commonly accuse of white adjacency.
Welcome to the new, New Democratic Party. White, upper-middle class "knowledge" snobs with a few token darkies to satisfy their self-affirming guilt and lots of Big Money. But still telling colored people what to do.
I can't say that you are wrong there.
https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/matt-margolis/2022/08/28/whoa-did-biden-admit-elections-have-been-stolen-n1624877
So, why did Joe Biden say, during a rally Thursday, that Democrats have a plan to make sure no one ever steals an election “again”?
“If we elect two more senators, we keep the House and Democrats, we’re going to get a lot of unfinished business we’re going to get done. Folks, look, we’ll codify Roe v. Wade. We’ll ban, we’ll ban assault weapons. We’ll protect Social Security and Medicare. We’ll pass universal pre-K. We’ll restore the Childcare Tax Credit. We’ll protect voting rights. We’ll pass election reform and make sure no one, no one, ever has the opportunity to steal an election again,” Biden told the crowd.
What's with this leftward lurch in the run-up to November?
THE GUY IS NUTS, THATS WHY.
Hey global socialism won't impose itself.
This is silly parsing of Biden's statement. He was obviously saying they'll make sure no one ever has the *opportunity* again. Because their whole narrative right now is that the GA voting laws (among others) are giving Republicans the opportunity to steal elections (which is patent bullshit, but there you go).
Of the billion things Biden says that could generate clicks, Margolis chooses this? Feh.
I agree. There is so much looting going on at the moment that there is no need to parse stupid statements as if they reveal Machiavellian secrets that are being kept. It's not like anyone is bothering to hide the corruption at this point.
This is true, but there is the undercurrent on the Left that the 2000 and 2016 elections were stolen. This plays on that.
Or it is an honest parsing of his statement and left supporters like you can't have that. Just like the justifications for his "gaffe" about having "the greatest election fraud organization in US history" were nonsense.
Joe Biden in 2020, "We have put together I think the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics."
I love that quote. And what exactly did that voter fraud organization do to protect our elections? Hmmmm...
What worries me most is that he’s threatening to ban assault weapons—TWICE!!! (Overkill, in my book!)

Oh, really, you object to this, guy who apprenticed with his father from the age of 18 and sustained a business that is now a hair's breadth from going under for good? You don't want your money going for these student loans? You, sir, are a bigot. And remember that PPP loan we gave you when we forcibly shut your business down? Ha! You took it, and that means you have to go along with giving free money to other people - under any circumstances, to make them to like us - or you're a hypocrite. And a Trumper! Fuck you.

https://www.dailywire.com/news/ford-electric-mustang-price-going-up-after-biden-dems-handed-out-ev-tax-credit
The price of Ford’s Mustang Mach-E will see up to an $8,475 increase next week due to what the company says are “significant material cost increases” and “evolving market conditions.”
...Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act on August 16, with full Democratic support in the Senate, as every single Republican opposed. Along with the bill’s nearly $370 billion spent on climate, the legislation also grants tax credits of up to $7,500 for those who buy certain EVs that are assembled in North America.
Mustang Mach-Es are built at Ford's Cuautitlan plant in Mexico
I think that will still qualify as North America.

https://www.theepochtimes.com/cdc-backtracks-on-covid-guidance-as-damning-studies-mount_4691002.html
August 11, 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reversed its COVID-19 guidelines, thereby vindicating every “misinformation spreader” out there
The CDC is now advocating for taking personal responsibility and for everyone to decide for themselves “which prevention behaviors to use and when (at all times or at specific times), based on their own risk for severe illness and that of members of their household, their risk tolerance, and setting-specific factors”
The CDC is also giving up on discrimination based on COVID jab status, stating, its “COVID-19 prevention recommendations no longer differentiate based on a person’s vaccination status because breakthrough infections occur.” They also admit natural immunity exists and works
Testing is now reserved for those who “are symptomatic, or have a known or suspected exposure to someone with COVID-19,” isolation is only for those who are symptomatic and have tested positive, and contact tracing is now restricted to health care settings and select “high-risk congregate settings”
The CDC’s about-face appears to be politically motivated, to give the Biden administration a “win” before the midterm elections. Post-election plans include “the biggest vaccination campaign in history,” so tyrannical overreaches may later resume, even as mounting data show the COVID shots are causing depopulation
And yet, I still see people in public wearing masks. My God, once you spook the herd, it really is hard to bring them back isn't it?
Like TDS, CDS is incurable.
I assume anyone wearing a mask knows they are contagious with some disease, most likely the Communist Chinese Virus, and stay far away.
If they approach me I yell "unclean" as loud as possible; usually they go away.
Either that or they are terminal COVID-fearing idiots with Howard Hughes-level germaphobia. Also good to shoo them away.
To go inside any building at Mount Rushmore a mask is required. The irony of four faces of the greatest individualists to ever become statesman looking down on it all is hilarious, otherwise it would be tragic.
The NPS has gotten a severe case of Covid Derangement Syndrome. The nutball at the gate to the Everglades handed me the payment terminal on a stick last December and whined about "cooties" going around. Mind you, this is from a window to a car, outside.
JFree and Brandy hardest hit.
Here in SF area there are plenty of stores and restaurants still requiring *proof of vaccination*, and of course masks. It's absurd.
you couldn't pay me enough to live in that shit hole. Such a shame, interesting climate, beautiful sites, but ran into the ground by the left
But soon to be destroyed by a major earthquake (and rebuilt at a cost of trillions of public funds).
Which will destroy SF first, an earthquake or Climate Change?
I would certainly never recommend someone relocate to this area. It should be very close to last place in america worth moving to. LA is worse but not by much.
In the South Bay I’m noticing relaxed masking. Some do, some don’t, everyone seems more or less OK with that. (Maybe because no one’s afraid of “being mistaken for a Republican anymore?)
Yes. And as the excess death numbers among the vaccinated become increasingly difficult to deny, the Democrats are Now calling it TRUMP'S VACCINE.
This will obviously fail spectacularly, after Biden not only championed the jab but mandated it wherever he could.

"I Don't Want American Kids"
The Real Reason Parents Are Suddenly Choosing Language Immersion Schools
https://abigailshrier.substack.com/p/i-dont-want-american-kids?sd=pf
Dr. Sax lectures internationally about raising kids, which he frankly thinks America, as a society, is doing poorly. American parents are not authorities in their own households and they don’t enforce even basic behavioral standards with their children, he says. “Fifty years ago, boys wanted to be men. But today, many American men want to be boys. And that there are many American men who want nothing more than to sit with their twelve-year-old son and play Call of Duty and games like that—they have no clue of the role of the father. They just want to give their kids a good time.”
Sure, American parents are lax. So what? It’s far deeper than a little lassitude, he explained. The culture we’re surrounding our children in—by so many metrics (mental health, physical fitness, drive)—it’s making them worse. “We now have very good research comparing American kids who speak English at home to immigrant kids who don't speak English at home,” he said. “American kids who speak English at home are much more likely to be anxious, depressed, disengaged, and experienced non-suicidal self-injury compared to kids who don't speak English at home, using speaking English at home as a proxy for engagement with American culture.” When he advises immigrant families in the United States, he tells them not to speak English at home.
I don't think it is speaking English at home that is the problem. I think the problem is being exposed to our degenerate and sick mass culture.

School districts across Florida have banned around 200 books, according to a report published by PEN America, a nonprofit that tracks book banning in the U.S.

And it is always 'banned' with quotational quantifier.
We know what banned really means.
The Compelling Evidence COVID-19 Was Spreading Across the U.S. in 2019 That Officials Are Ignoring
https://dailysceptic.org/2022/08/29/the-compelling-evidence-covid-19-was-spreading-across-the-u-s-in-2019-that-officials-are-ignoring/
For example, if the virus had already infected large numbers of people, the justification for the lockdowns of mid-March 2020 to ‘slow or stop the spread’ of a newly arrived virus would be shown to be nonsense. Estimates of the number of people who had already developed natural immunity as well as of the infection fatality rate (IFR) might be dramatically different. It would suggest the disease was not nearly as lethal as experts proclaimed. The mass fear in the public – a prerequisite for lockdowns and later for mass vaccinations – might be much lower.
Given these points, it’s odd public health officials and investigative journalists have eschewed serious investigations that might confirm this virus had already spread around the world before January 1st 2020.
Given these points, it’s odd public health officials and investigative journalists have eschewed serious investigations that might confirm this
20 years ago it would have been odd. Now it's expected that they'd be covering it up.
We've known for years at this point that bloodwork taken in mid-December 2019 showed that 2% of donated blood had antibodies. That's four months before we did anything at all to slow the curve, and the winter months in which covid flourishes. Yet we went through holiday travel, basketball games, church meetings, going out to bars, etc etc, for FOUR MORE MONTHS -- and we didn't even notice the virus.
Anecdotal, but I had a friend that visited Thailand summer of 2019. They were advised to buy surgical masks before the winter because they would soon be hard to get.

Basem Mahmoud is an imam operating in the heavily Muslim-dominated area of Rosengård in Malmö. He has called Jews "the offspring of pigs and apes," said he was "only quoting the Koran," and is looking forward to "the great battle" when all non-Muslims will be forced to submit themselves to Muslims.
In a sermon in February 2022, Mahmoud went on the attack against Swedish schools and social services and stated that Muslims are taking over the country. "Sweden is ours," he said. " It is ours, whether they [Swedes] like it or not. In ten to fifteen years, it is ours."
Sweden has one of the world's worst recorded rape rates. In 2018, the state broadcaster SVT revealed that 58% of men convicted in Sweden of rape and attempted rape over the previous five years were born abroad. Some of the most brutal rape cases have involved Muslim or African immigrants.

This is not a bright person. Also, I'm fairly confident that enrolling in a for-profit college was not her biggest mistake.
1) Who gets a doctorate in HRM at 55? It is not a requirement for anything.
2) $300,000 for a doctorate? From where, Oxford? That amount certainly sounds like tuition plus living abroad for 2 years.
3) There are actually measures in place at every college I attended to prevent such a waste of money. They don't normally let you finance a wet dream. It took some serious lying to counselors to get such a program approved.
But something has gone terribly wrong when people who voluntarily sign up for money and can afford to pay it back get to skip out on the check.

The Failed Trump Vaccine
https://twitter.com/davidfrum/status/1470031425684582406
Seems the best option is
1) Keep encouraging vaccines and boosters;
2) Impose vaccine mandates where it can be done;
3) Otherwise return to normal as fully as we can, especially the schools; and
4) Let hospitals quietly triage emergency care to serve the unvaccinated last
That guy has gone from being a boring garden-variety 'Never Trumper' to just plain evil.
I see that #4 point brought up a lot (someone was even saying it in these comment sections a few months back) and I just don't understand how they don't see the problem with that. The logical conclusion to that thought process it to not treat anyone with a "preventable" illness, like lung cancer in smokers or any number of surgeries/treatments for obese people. Just let them die, right? It was their choice to smoke, eat Mcdonalds and/or not get vaxxed.
Let's push it even further. You get beat up by your boyfriend? Why should police waste time and resources helping you out when it was your choice to get that boyfriend? You did that to yourself, according to those people in that twitter chain.
These short sighted zealots dont have the brain power to think 5 seconds past punishing their political opponents. Unintended consequences are beyond them
There was a handful of regular commentators here supporting this back in 2020.
Some people seem to be auditioning for the role of villain in a Dean Koontz novel.
"4) Let hospitals quietly triage emergency care to serve the unvaccinated last"
Lefties have had a raging hard on for this since go.
Nothing excites them more than having an elevated status for licking the correct boots while punishing their political opponents. Very fortunately that isnt happening in hospitals...so far
David Frum is one of the most disgusting people in the media today. My God, what kind of a fucking monster thinks that is a good idea?
Can hardly wait to see Jeff and Mike argue for this.
Jeff has already been arguing today that government censorship of political speech isn't a first amendment violation.
im fairly certain jeff was one of the regulars that argued for it in the past, though I may be incorrect

No, not getting vaccinated is not the same as being actively sick. Although the likelihood increases if you're not vaccinated.
Wait? jeffy and White Mike argued it for at least 6 months last year. Joe Friday kept trying to claim hospitals were turning away patients and got debunked every time because it never happened anywhere in the US.
People didn't die because hospitals turned away patients during COVID. People died because the media and 'public health experts' scared them off from getting life saving healthcare with fear of COVID.
Remind me how many nurses died of COVID...
In 2020, over four million nurses practiced in the United States. - https://www.statista.com/topics/8337/nurses-in-the-us/#topicHeader__wrapper
November 3, 2020 -- At least 1,500 nurses across the globe have died from the coronavirus - https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20201101/at-least-1500-nurses-have-died-of-covid-19
Only 1,500 nurses died worldwide before the vaccine and there are over 4,000,000 in the US alone. Both the dangers in hospitals and the dangers of COVID were grossly exaggerated. But hospitals and nurses raked up cash like there was no tomorrow.
hospitals and nurses raked up cash like there was no tomorrow.
Nurses, especially the ones willing to become travel contractors, made out pretty well, but the hospitals didn't - if the COVID kicker and the CARES bailout didn't exist then much of the industry would be on the brink of collapse. Even with them this is still an extremely lean time for what has historically been a very fat sector.
It makes me curious that hospitals didn't make bank. When I had COVID, my provider wouldn't see me. I ended up at the ER paying $1500 out of pocket for an EEG and a prescription for cough syrup with codeine. All I really needed was a strong enough cough syrup that I could get more than 15 minutes sleep at a stretch and I was loads better the next day and feeling stupid for visiting the ER.
Anecdotally, my COVID care was much ado about very little and not cheap.
In other words. Do what we did before 'The PANDEMIC'
Out of curiosity…has the PANDEMIC officially been downgraded to Endemic yet?
https://amgreatness.com/2022/08/28/lawyer-january-6-clients-are-being-tortured/
If even half of what this lawyer claims is true, it is a national outrage. Odd how January 6th seems to be the one accusation of prosecutorial misconduct reason not only refuses to believe but won't even talk about. Sort of like how the shooting of Ashley Babbit was the one police shooting in the history of the nation that reason was certain was totally righteous such that there was no need to even investigate it.
What part of existential threat to democracy double emergency do you not understand?
But that's not from the MSM, NYT, or Washington Post, so it can't be true.

My hard science degree is being diluted by wokism. The engineering college has a new Female Dean of Color as they put it. I have evidence that this crap is being added to the engineering curriculum. Sad.
Though the new engineers who spend more time at diversity than actual education will only push my salary higher due to scarcity.

The hard truth is this: your child is behind and millions of kids have what amounts to learning disabilities now because they had to stay inside and wear masks for years because Democrats wanted to win an election and many Republicans were too scared to say no.
The reason you had to lose your job or business because they shut the country down long after the truth about the virus was clear and forced people to take a vax that’s not a vax—is ultimately because Democrats wanted to win an election and Republicans didn’t stop them.
The reason you had to watch your cities burn and to this day have to deal with rising crime—the reason millions of you had to leave your home and move elsewhere—is ultimately because Democrats wanted to win an election and Republicans couldn’t stop them.
That about sums it up. The problem is that admitting the truth of that is probably something most people are unwilling to do because doing so requires admitting their culpability in it.
But remember to not vote libertarian in 2024!

I love how “barista” is the job conservatives bring up as a lazy slacker job when one shift at a moderately busy Starbucks would have them crouched between stacks of milk crates sobbing in the back room
Twitter is a shit pit.
So brave!
Also, let's see Sarah hump sheets of drywall up 5 flights of stairs, re-tar a roof or a road when it's 100°, change oil on one hot car after another, or spend 12 hour shifts on any farm or ranch.
ya I was going to say nearly every job I had coming up was not only harder, but Sarah likely wouldn't have been physically capable of doing at all.
Unless she is a bull dyke, but then only maybe
I also suspect she really does not understand the connection between "work" and "pay".
Dry wall installation is one of the shittiest jobs.
Did fencing and roofing as well back in my college days. Roofing was worse than drywall, drywall was even worse than hauling rolls of freeway wire up steep hills in 90 degree heat.
Raking 200 degree asphalt when it is 100 degrees outside and the roller is vibrating and blowing 220 degree exhaust at you is a pretty good approximation of what hell will be like for the Proggie elites. And, yes, I have actually done it.
Right. Hump 90 pound of rolled roofing up a ladder when you weigh 130 yourself. Have a wasp land on your leg. look at you, and sting you just for the fuck of it, and then complete the climb to drop of the roll.
Or tie yourself off with a rope to paint the last piece of trim your tallest ladders wouldn't reach, hang out the window and not only prime it but do again tomorrow, cuz the primer needs to dry.
Totally the same as a double half caf with a vanilla spritz.

I will say that restaurants are one of the few places where you don't want the person serving you working up a sweat.
Agreed. But I shouldn’t have to wait 30 minutes to put in my drink order.
Yeah, she lacks the understanding that just because your job makes you miserable doesn't mean it's difficult.
Working with the general public sucks, but ultimately you're pouring coffee. It is a very easy job in the grand scheme of things.

Shhh. Don't give the prohibitionists any ideas.
This does actually get at a concern I've had with a lot of marijuana legalization, is that it often didn't seem to come from particularly libertarian reasoning so much as marijuana was increasingly viewed as a positive good. Which is very different things.

When euthanasia becomes the sixth leading cause of death in your country, perhaps it is time to rethink the real value of your “free” healthcare.
Canada’s Euthanasia Policies Under Scrutiny As Reports Surface Of Euthanizing A Man For “Hearing Loss”
Euthanasia starts out as "just let people have control over their own body" and always ends with the government having a license to murder whoever they deem unfit. Left Libertarians of course love euthanasia because they can never turn down the chance to be a useful idiot to the left.
There's an important thing here, which is euthanasia is the medicalization of death. There is not, and never has been, a particularly good way to stop a dedicated person from killing themselves. Euthanasia tends to be putting the thumb on the scales towards death, and you get a system that begins to encourage people towards it rather than away from it.
Well said
you get a system that begins to encourage people towards it rather than away from it.
It's all part of of getting to post-capitalism. People who can't see any way to end their suffering will fight back eventually.

South Korean Scientists Claim Eating ‘Worm Burgers’ Could Solve World Hunger
South Korean scientists have cooked mealworms, or beetle larvae, along with sugar to create “meat” — and they claim it tastes authentic...
Climate change is partially fueled by cow emissions — due to the methane they produce — hence the need for beef substitutes.
Yay, 2030!

I can't wait to eat bugs, live in a pod and own nothing.
But there will still be Starbucks, right?
Only as a place to work. Buying coffee there will require an Inner Party card.
I wonder how it is. I think the big mistake a lot of these people are making is pushing it hard as an alternative to other meats rather than its own thing. I would try a bug burger if it was just a thing being offered. Might be good, might be bad, but I'd try it.
It's like those Morningstar Black Bean patties. Not a meat substitute, but actually not bad on their own. I get them and eat them willingly now and then.
I've actually eaten commercially-prepared roasted mealworms, grasshoppers and ants as snacks. I don't have a problem with it and found them really tasty.
But I'm never ever ever going to give up steak, bacon, roast chicken or hamburger for them.
I was in high school when the 17 year cicadas came around. I ate a few of those, they weren't bad with peanut butter.
I doubt I'd ever accept it as a full up replacement for chicken, but if you got creative with it I think it's the kind of thing you could eat occasionally and not be upset.

Today in an older thread, Jeff has taken to arguing that government censorship orders aren't first amendment violations.
His trick is to claim that because it's okay for the government to make requests and demands, it's okay, and not a violation of the first, for some of those to be for censorship.
"One set, the one that I prefer, says that government attempts to 'jawbone' private companies to do something is only unconstitutional if the government action is very obviously a threat or intimidation. Just hot air doesn't count.

More Chemjeff gems, read the thread for head-shaking context:
"It is not necessarily unconstitutional for the government to request that a private company do something, even for a private company to censor someone."
https://reason.com/2022/08/28/the-satanic-verses/?comments=true#comment-9674097
"And it is not per se unconstitutional for them to make requests, even demands.
I wonder if this is official ActBlue narrative or just Chemleft flailing? I guess we'll know if ENB picks it up.
by Jeff's logic, the police could call me up and ask me to break into my neighbor's house and take whatever papers of his they wanted, and that would be totally okay as long as they just "jawboned me" and didn't intimidate me.
The standard for being a government agent is not "were you forced to be one". The standard is "are you doing something on behalf of the government."

U.S. Natural Gas Production Hit An All-Time High In 2021
By Robert Rapier - Aug 02, 2022, 4:00 PM CDT
In 2021, global natural gas consumption reached a new all-time high, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 by 3.3%.
The United States emerged as the world’s top producer and consumer of natural gas.
The U.S. shale gas boom propelled the U.S. into the global leader among natural producers.
https://oilprice.com/Energy/Natural-Gas/US-Natural-Gas-Production-Hit-An-All-Time-High-In-2021.html
Wow, this makes no sense.
According to Wingnut.com Sleepy Joe has banned all oil and gas production n the USA.
Now the industry is reporting all time highs for O&G production?
Makes no sense.
Biden hasn't "banned all oil and gas production", he has interfered with exploration, investing, drilling, transportation, and refining. Those effects will be increasingly felt over the next few years.
Well, he outright banned some.

"U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana Judge Terry Doughty issued a permanent injunction blocking the leasing moratorium in a ruling late Thursday evening.
Doughty wrote that President Biden "lacked any authority" to implement the policy under the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA) and Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA) which regulate federal leasing on public lands and waters."
There's such a thing as lying by omission, Shrike. Deliberately leaving out important factors in order to craft a phony narrative is deceitful.
Never forget, turd lies. It's what turd does. Notice that as a TDS-addled lying pile of shit, there was no link in his latest lie.
OK, so Biden merely tried to kill oil and gas drilling but courts prevented him from doing so... for now.
Voters need to remember that in November: if Democrats win, the country is doomed.
You've been quite prolific today, Mr. Buttplug.
Do you plan on permanently returning to the several-times-per-day #DefendBidenAtAllCosts schedule you maintained from January 2021 until a few months ago? Because this place wasn't as fun without your constant pro-Biden advocacy.
'...without your constant pro-Biden bullshit.'
Small correction.
I know you need me to post here, OBL.
Actually it is embarrassing to argue with Trump Cultists. The gravity of the cult means they can't learn.
From the guy posting the exact same talking-points for months without changing.
Is it "arguing" if you are continually proven wrong and then mocked? Because that is mainly what I see anytime you post stuff.
Never forget, turd lies. It's what turd does.
BTW, turd, no one here "agues" with you; you are universally called on your lies and then mocked.
You have never once posted anything which warrants an argument; you post lies, cherry picked data, and other forms of bullshit. You never post anything else.
Eat shit and die, asshole.
TDS is a bitch of a cult, isn't it?
You forgot the hashtag, OBL. Sheesh, do I have to do everyone’s job today?!
#BastiatWouldHaveLOVEDBiden
turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, a TDS-addled pile of lefty shit and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
Eat shit and die, asshole.
Honestly, OBL does you better than you do you. You might want to take pointers from him.
The libertarian position on "the war on drugs" isn't that drugs are harmless, it's that the state shouldn't intervene if people choose to destroy their own lives. In a libertarian society, it is fear and self-restraint that keep people from using drugs.
The fact that Americans view marijuana as harmless and that so many have used it is actually a practical argument against legalizing it. Marijuana usage in the US is much higher than in other countries that have legalized marijuana.
Like it or not marijuana is not part of the culture thanks to hippies and rappers.
cross out that second "not"
You had it right before. Marijuana was part of the culture even before rappers, much less hippies were on the scene.
Yes, but back then it was sheer MADNESS!!!!
Well, so we agree: marijuana is part of US culture. As are economic illiteracy, a preference for government handouts, and a sense of entitlement.
All of those US cultural traits are a problem for libertarianism.
Know what else is part US culture? Cuban sandwiches.
Well, I’ll take a Cuban sandwich over Hitler any ole day!
Yeah, legalize marijuana. Just keep on smoking that stuff in your car and giving the police a reason to search it.
I know that people don't smoke Marijuana with the frequency that tobacco users smoke cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
Still, smoking one or two Marijuana cigarettes daily for years must cause some sort of lung damage. People who die in fires are far more often killed by smoke inhalation.
Alcohol has its risks. But, when I had my physical last year and told my doctor that I had 1 to 3 alcoholic drinks in a week, spread out over the week, she said that wasn't much more than a tea-totaler.
Pot use rose 33% y/y and Liz says: "not a big rise"?
Did the poll give a comprehensive choice, 1. Criminalize. 2. Legalize. 3. Decriminalize? I bet it didn't. That's no choice, if the the govt. use of force, threats, against non-violent citizens is presumed to be the only choice. It's not, moral, practical, or sustainable. Coercive govt. destabilizes society. Time to boycott it and choose a voluntarily based politics, allowing reason, rights.
