Congress Raised the Debt Ceiling Again Without Doing Anything To Fix the $28 Trillion National Debt
Plus: Why "reforming" Section 230 makes little sense, the FDA finally admits vaping is safer than smoking, the U.S. will reopen its land borders with Canada and Mexico, and more...

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday evening to lift the debt ceiling by $480 billion, temporarily postponing a possible default until early December. The bill, which had passed the Senate last week, heads to President Joe Biden's desk a few days before the October 18 deadline that Treasury Department officials had set for a possible default.

But the short-term measure doesn't really resolve anything. It merely buys some time for Congress to reach an agreement on a more significant move on the debt ceiling, potentially as part of the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill that Democrats are trying to push through the Senate.
To bring the short-term debt ceiling increase to the Senate floor last week, Republicans dropped their monthslong threat of blocking the legislature. In a letter to the White House last week, however, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R–Ky.) warned that the GOP would not do so again. "I will not be a party to any future effort to mitigate the consequences of Democratic mismanagement," McConnell wrote. "Your lieutenants on Capitol Hill now have the time they claimed they lacked to address the debt ceiling through standalone reconciliation, and all the tools to do it. They cannot invent another crisis and ask for my help."
McConnell is right that Democratic brinkmanship on the debt ceiling—which could have been raised even without Republican support—was unnecessary and counterproductive. But Republicans were more than happy to raise the debt ceiling on several occasions while President Donald Trump was in the White House. More importantly, Republicans were happy to approve budgets that relied heavily on borrowing during the Trump years. Raising the debt ceiling now is necessary to allow the Treasury to borrow money for that already-approved spending.
That's a detail often lost in debates over the debt ceiling—and one that is sometimes willfully misplaced. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R–Ga.), for example, claimed that Tuesday's vote on the debt ceiling was to "pay for" the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill.
In some important ways, fretting about the debt limit is a lot like worrying about the status of the proverbial barn door after the metaphorical cow is already loose. Except, in this case, the metaphorical cow is a lot of very real money that's been borrowed by Congress. The way to avoid fights over the debt limit is to shut the door—that is, to stop deficit spending—before the cow gets away. Once it does, you can point fingers and assign blame if you want, but you've ultimately got to get in the truck and go find the cow. You've got to raise the debt limit.
And then you really should remember to shut the door next time.
A decade ago, it looked like Congress might've learned that lesson. Fights over the debt ceiling helped to usher in the closest thing America has had to a serious conversation about the trajectory of the federal debt in a long time. Those conversations led to temporary spending caps and the 2013 sequestration.
Those spending caps died hard during the Trump years and the COVID-19 pandemic stretched federal borrowing to new highs. So now we're back to having fights about the debt ceiling, because lawmakers and presidents keep agreeing to borrow more money in a bipartisan fashion. This debt limit increase doesn't belong to one side of the aisle or the other. It belongs to everyone in Washington who has spent the past few decades spending, spending, and spending some more with little regard for how to pay for it.

When lawmakers talk about "reforming" Section 230, which protects free speech on the internet, they're really talking about repealing it:

FREE MARKETS
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the first time authorized the marketing of a vaping product on the grounds that it can help smokers quit.
The FDA said that the Vuse Solo e-cigarette produces aerosols that "are significantly less toxic than combusted cigarettes based on available data," and that "the potential benefit to smokers who switch completely or significantly reduce their cigarette use, would outweigh the risk to youth."
In other words, the FDA confirmed exactly what vaping advocates have been saying for years, but did it only after issuing sweeping new regulations that effectively crushed large swaths of the e-cigarette market.
Now, while literally millions of other products await the FDA's official (and slow-moving) stamp of approval, the agency has awarded a huge market privilege to Vuse Solo by making it (for now) the only e-cigarette product that can be marketed legally. It's probably a total coincidence that Vuse is manufactured by R.J. Reynolds, one of the biggest tobacco companies on the planet.
Well, looks like there will be at least 1 e-cigarette legally authorized for sale in the United States. The independent market has been wiped out but R. J. Reynolds gets to keep selling, so the law is working as intended (by big tobacco companies). https://t.co/6FBppwbOU4

COVID-19 UPDATE
Vaccinated, passport-holding individuals will once again be allowed to cross the Canadian and Mexican land borders into the United States starting in November, The New York Times reports:
The lifting of the 19-month ban at the land borders will not only reconnect the United States to its neighbors, but is one of the last steps to opening the country's borders to vaccinated travelers throughout the world. After more than a year of cutting off the country from international tourism, the administration has now turned the country into a welcome destination for the vaccinated — while making clear that all foreigners who choose to not get a shot will face stringent restrictions to enter the United States.
Unvaccinated travelers will continue to be barred from crossing the borders with Mexico or Canada.
Lifting the travel restrictions is a welcome—if long overdue—signal that pandemic restrictions are winding down, even if shutting the border never did much to stop COVID-19's spread in the first place and made even less sense once vaccines were readily available.

Terrified Virginia Democrats Seek to Change Election Laws After Voting Has Already Started
https://redstate.com/bonchie/2021/10/11/terrified-virginia-democrats-seek-to-change-election-laws-after-voting-has-already-started-n455021
Virginia’s gubernatorial contest between Republican Glenn Youngkin and Democrat Terry McAuliffe clearly has supporters of the latter worried. Recent polls show a far tighter race than they expected. Consequently, it was all but inevitable that McAuliffe’s allies would attempt to meddle with election laws using public health as a pretext. Sure enough, the Democrat-dominated Fairfax Board of Supervisors has asked Gov. Ralph Northam to waive the witness signature requirement that Virginia law stipulates for all absentee ballots. Board Chairman Jeffrey McKay insists that the waiver is necessary due to the threat of COVID-19, yet cases are declining.
The 2020 Election Wasn’t Stolen, It Was Bought By Mark Zuckerberg
The true story of how Mark Zuckerberg privatized the government's voter registration and vote counting for Democrats in 2020.
https://thefederalist.com/2021/10/12/the-2020-election-wasnt-stolen-it-was-bought-by-mark-zuckerberg/
During the 2020 election, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent hundreds of millions of dollars to turn out likely Democratic voters. But this wasn’t traditional political spending. He funded a targeted, private takeover of government election operations by nominally non-partisan — but demonstrably ideological — non-profit organizations.
Analysis conducted by our team demonstrates this money significantly increased Joe Biden’s vote margin in key swing states. This unprecedented merger of public election offices with private resources and personnel is an acute threat to our republic, and should be the focus of electoral reform efforts moving forward.
The 2020 election wasn’t stolen — it was likely bought by one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful men pouring his money through legal loopholes.
Partisans Running Local Election Offices
The Center for Technology and Civic Life (CTCL) and The Center for Election Innovation and Research (CEIR) passed a staggering $419.5 million of Zuckerberg’s money into local government elections offices, and it came with strings attached. Every CTCL and CEIR grant spelled out in great detail the conditions under which the grant money was to be used.
This is not a matter of Democrats outspending Republicans. Private funding of election administration was virtually unknown in the American political system before the 2020 election.
Big CTCL and CEIR money had nothing to do with traditional campaign finance, lobbying, or other expenses that are related to increasingly expensive modern elections. It had to do with financing the infiltration of election offices at the city and county level by left-wing activists, and using those offices as a platform to implement preferred administrative practices, voting methods, and data-sharing agreements, as well as to launch intensive outreach campaigns in areas heavy with Democratic voters.
For instance, CTCL/CEIR funded self-described “vote navigators” in Wisconsin to “assist voters, potentially at their front doors, to answer questions, assist in ballot curing … and witness absentee ballot signatures,” and a temporary staffing agency affiliated with Stacey Abrams called “Happy Faces” counting the votes amidst the election night chaos in Fulton County, Georgia.

What a difference 11 Months makes. I was pointing this out in December, and who disagreed with me? It wasn't Sarc, or OL, or Chemjeff. It was Team Red.
But, finally, welcome to the party. Now is time to actually fix it. If you live in one of these states, or in Texas or some of the other Red-trending-Purple states, you need to get in front of your GOP state legislature IMMEDIATELY to start passing some laws that guarantee funding to all precincts, not just the ones with 90% Democrat Voters.
If you do not do this, you lose South Carolina and Texas next.
No, the funding issue was agreed with, bit it wasn't the biggest issue. Rule changes on Wisconsin, as an example, have now been declared illegal and an investigation is pushed forth. Likewise we have evidence of thousands of double voters. Evidence of ballots without chain of custody documents etc. Fraud is still a huge issue. No state has looked into adjudicated ballots.
Both issues are big. Both issues effected the election. Isolating and crowing about one being bigger than the other is silly.
"No, the funding issue was agreed with, bit it wasn’t the biggest issue."
Dude- read through the responses- there was NO agreement with me when I posted that from Team Red.
A) there were multiple threads. At the time the various ambiguities of the election were the primary issue. The lawsuits. The random vote dumps at 3am. Law changes for the elections.
B) you were treating it as an either/or proposition when it is an and.
Yes some solely focused on the election counts and procedures. It does t mean they dismissed your arguments outright. It was just their focus.
Both issues can be true.
And by the way. The funding wasn't get out the vote efforts. They funded election offices directly. That allowed deep blue areas to have longer hours of operations, workers to cure ballots, etc.
It is different than get out the vote spending.
This is a bizarre formulation. It was a "Get out the Vote" effort premised on funding Democrat precincts to increase their turnout (while leaving republican counties alone). The article I quoted at the link above specifically talks about what Ra posted- that Zuck essentially financed the election precincts of Democrat areas to ensure that they had upwards of 95% participation. Whether you label that "Get out the Vote" or not doesn't change the fact that persons like myself were pointing EXACTLY what Ra called out.
And by the way, failure to recognize and deal with that problem in December- instead of correcting the problems. It lost the Senate for the GOP.
Did you read the federalist article overt? It is listed dire try in there. The money was funding election offices directly. Resd the article.
Your initial claims centered on simple party spending. It wasn't. It was direct funding of election offices predicated on certain conditions. The same thing soros is doing in DA offices.
Again, read the article.
"Your initial claims centered on simple party spending. "
NO Jesse. Go back and read the article I linked to on the link above. Here...you don't even have to click through. This is the fucking article I linked to in DECEMBER:
https://pjmedia.com/jchristianadams/2020/12/02/the-real-kraken-what-really-happened-to-donald-trump-in-the-2020-election-n1185494
"This year, left-leaning donors Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan gave $350 million to an allegedly “nonpartisan” nonprofit, the Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL), which in turn re-granted the funds to thousands of governmental election officials around the country to “help” them conduct the 2020 election."
It is *literally* the same story.
The biggest red flag in that article is the spending in blue areas gave government officials 41 dollars per resident for voting efforts while rural areas were given 4 per resident. Urban areas should cost less as population is more dense. Yet they had 10x as much per resident. So much for equal treatment of voters.
This funding included illegal things such as voter ballot assistance, pre cured voting cards, training nursing home workers on how to fill put ballots for residents (often in isolation with no monitoring), un monitored drop boxes, etc.
What the heck is "ballot curing"?
When a mistake is made. Such as Wisconsin requires a witness signature for mail in ballots. Curing is calling the person that owns the ballot and having them fix it. In Wisconsin they simply had government workers look at a database and fill in the witness signature despite not witnessing it.
That’s no indication of fraud.

Pelosi: Reporters need to do a better job selling Biden's agenda
https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2021/10/13/pelosi-reporters-need-to-do-a-better-job-selling-bidens-agenda-n422039
With the House and Senate in recess, and the progressive-spearheaded $3.5 trillion social spending package left hanging in the balance, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scolded the media Tuesday for not doing more promotional messaging for the program.
Asked whether Democrats have failed to effectively persuade the public that a massive influx of social spending is necessary, Pelosi turned the question around on the reporter.
“Well I think you all could do a better job of selling it, to be very frank with you, because every time I come here I go through the list: medical leave, climate, the issues that are in there,” Pelosi said.
Like, why even have a 4th estate?
They’ve been acting like propagandists for 6 years, why shouldn’t she expect them to do her bidding?
If even the media can't spin it positively...
I’m sure the network news will call her out for it tonight.
Expect more hard hitting stories on how even poor people in red states want new government benefits, and how climate change is so bad already that we have more than 26 tropical storms per year (not mentioning that we're better at detecting them now).
"Your responsibility is to promote our agenda, not talk about the difficulty in shoving it down everyone's throat."
Here's the sales pitch:
Even though we're 29 trillion dollars in debt, we clearly need to spend 3.5 trillion dollars on family benefits we've lived without for 245 years, and in a likely futile attempt to change the weather, because the Progressive Caucus is expecting it. And it will only cost 10,000 dollars in new debt (or taxes) per American citizen!
Ironic, yesterday I literally saw a "Build Back Better" commercial.

https://pjmedia.com/culture/robert-spencer/2021/10/12/cnn-get-used-to-empty-supermarket-shelves-comrade-n1523456
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday what has been obvious for quite some time: “The president wants to make fundamental change in our economy, and he feels coming out of the pandemic is exactly the time to do that.” CNN is already laying the groundwork for this, preparing Americans for one of the foremost hallmarks of socialist regimes the world over: empty supermarket shelves. On Sunday, the Leftist propaganda organ masquerading as a news source published a lengthy article entitled “Grocery store shelves aren’t going back to normal this year.” Or, from the looks of things, after that, unless the Leftists in the American government are thrown out of office in 2022 and 2024 and decisively repudiated.
CNN was up front about disappointing Americans who are still optimistic that some day this will all end: “If you hoped grocery stores this fall and winter would look like they did in the Before Times, with limitless options stretching out before you in the snack, drink, candy and frozen foods aisles, get ready for some disappointing news.”
Also greedy: more than 800 sq ft of living space for a family of four.

That's not even the best part--just wait until the entire logistics chain responsible for keeping those stores stocked gets fucked because businesses fired employees, or they retired/quit, for not getting one specific prophylaxis shot due to an ever-increasing definition of what constitutes "herd immunity" in the simple-simon brains of a our nation's idiot "experts."
If the stores are without stock, it's either because the Biden administration wants them to be, in order to deepen the crisis as an excuse to ram their agenda down our throats, or because the galaxy brains in their administration are too stupid realize what happens when 5, 10, 15, 20 percent of your workforce suddenly isn't working.
It isn't just all the ships stuck in the harbors--pretty much every transport function from the trucking industry to railroads to harbormasters are dominated by career Boomers who can hang it up any time they want now, and can't be replaced because Gen-Xers and Millennals have spent the last 25 years chasing careers in tech, weed, real estate, and academia. And unfortunately for these people, importing half the planet because Diversity Is Our Strength and There's No Downside To More Immigration, isn't going to keep those industries humming at the same rates of competency.
We've brought in millions of immigrants and "refugees" over the last 35 years since the last amenesty, and fast food places can't even hire basic shift workers at $13 an hour. What makes these people think those same folks will volunteer to go into the shipping industry just to keep a bunch of bougie progressives fat and comfortable?

Turns out that Joe Biden and Hunter Biden shared bank accounts and paid each other’s bills. So, now that the FBI is investigating Hunter’s finances, potential money laundering and foreign business relationships, that may also ensnare Joe Biden.
According to the Daily Mail, emails from Hunter’s laptop between Hunter and Eric Schwerin, his business partner in Rosemont Seneca, show that Schwerin “was working on Joe’s taxes, discussing the father and son paying each other’s household bills, and even fielding requests for a book deal for the then-vice president, as well as managing the donation of Joe’s senate papers to the University of Delaware.”
This also puts paid, once again, to the lie that Biden had nothing to do with his son’s business, because clearly parts of his son’s business — like Schwerin — had a lot to do with Joe’s finances.
Nothing to see here.

Even Obama acknowledged nuclear as a vital component in the “all of the above” model for a modern, functional grid in North America.
Of course, this was before the Lightbringer, under instructions from Harry Reid, defunded the Yucca Mountain spent fuel repository, effectively putting an end to any new nukes in the USA.
Despite the real time examples provided by the UK, the US continues to have shitty policy regarding the use of new nuclear generation options that are available (not that anything is wrong with current nuclear technology, in my opinion).
California, which routinely experiences rolling blackouts during hot weather, is about to loose the Diablo Canyon Power Station in 2025. It’s the state’s largest power plant, and it’s getting decommissioned for no reason other than CA’s idiot environmental politics.
Hopefully the rest of the US pays more attention to the UK, and less attention to dipshit CA.
True, and we have not constructed a new nuclear reactor since 1978. And Three Mile Island and some stupid Jane Fonda movie scared anyone out of building any after that.
It also takes longer to get back to the moon with today's vastly superior computing power than it took some guys with clip on ties and slide rules to do it in the 1960s.

"And I helped!", Mitch proudly brags. And Chucky immediately punks his ass, as he should, because there's nothing the GOP likes better than being treated like the Democrat's bitches.
Pelosi blames the media for not selling the 3 5T plan.

But this brings up another point. She has now advertised a 2T agreement. The original ask was 3.5T. Now with infrastructure carved off at 1.6T, the 2T ask totals total spending to.... 3.6T. Americans are being played for as fools. The democrats have not given up spending, they just distracted as they split spending up and created a collapse of spending narrative.

Domestic Terrorists, the lot of them. The FBI should investigate.
Still skeptical here. There should be more evidence than a few randos.
Thousands of flights shut down over 5 days with no bad weather patterns isnt evidence enough?
lol more evidence! there is zero evidence it was weather.

Literally everything they accused Trump of doing, the Democrats are actively doing.
It's all projection with the Democrats, everything they accuse their enemies of doing is exactly what they're doing. But what should really concern you is that Pelosi accused Trump of planning to start a war with China just so he could declare an emergency and cancel the election. Do you think the Democrats are concerned about the 2024 election? They already know there's not going to be a 2024 election.

This is kind of fucking weird that all this has happened in like two weeks, after a year where cities were burned to the ground because these same people claimed black voices aren't being heard.

In the past two weeks we've learned black NBA players can't have opinions on vaccine mandates, black comedians can't make jokes about certain topics and now black members of opposing media can't even pose for friendly photographs. It's a *LITTLE* fucking weird.

They called that thing a space flight. There was no flight, it was just a space fling. They shot the rocket up, once it reached as high as it would go, it fell back down and that was it. NASA was doing better than that 60 years ago.
Orbiting is just a fling that lasts longer. It's all freefall.
But, yeah, pretty lame "space flight". I wouldn't say no if someone else was paying, though.
I'd say yes if I had the money to pay too.
And I would only with my own money. See how it's done, Bezos, Branson, and Musk?
SpaceX put 4 civilians in orbit higher than the International Space Station. They were orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes for 3 days.

The irony is that this is exactly the kind of thing that would make people rightfully afraid of trannies.
"Why authoritarian regimes hate the internet"
Because the Congressional Hearings don't seem to be completely stopping people from expressing their unacceptable opinions there?
It merely buys some time for Congress to reach an agreement on a more significant move on the debt ceiling, potentially as part of the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill that Democrats are trying to push through the Senate.
To bring the short-term debt ceiling increase to the Senate floor last week, Republicans dropped their monthslong threat of blocking the legislature.
Hmmm...
Oh. Both sides.
But Republicans were more than happy to raise the debt ceiling on several occasions while President Donald Trump was in the White House.
Were those raises to support 5T in New spending?
The way to avoid fights over the debt limit is to shut the door—that is, to stop deficit spending—before the cow gets away.
Which can be done by not raising the debt ceiling since tax revenues > payments on the debt. But it means a lot of feds get fired. Win win.
The simple solution is to raise the debt ceiling once, to 30 trillion dollars, and then stop raising it.
Don't spend an extra 3.5 trillion we don't have on stuff we don't need. Do not pass Go, do not collect 2 trillion in new taxes.
Once it does, you can point fingers and assign blame if you want, but you've ultimately got to get in the truck and go find the cow. You've got to raise the debt limit.
Yes. This was written on a libertarian site by the economics writer.
It was written by a birdbrain, not a libertarian. That is for sure.

Save American Democracy, Eliminate the Voters
Certified expert Tom Nichols has a ‘moral scolding’ for the plebes
https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/tom-nichols-oliver-traldi
o who are you gonna believe, huh? Voters who only care about their own self-interest are ruining America, but the same voters are also so driven by resentment that they can’t recognize their own self-interest. Nicholas has a chapter on how corrosive narcissism and anger are, but his whole book seems spittle-flecked and he frequently breaks the flow of his exposition to narrate his own expert credentials and accomplishments. Nichols castigates people for “exchanging paranoid memes on Facebook” right after saying that “the rest of us are vigilantly scanning the horizon . . . for the shock troops of a mass movement,” and right before claiming that “authoritarianism could arrive . . . on little cat feet, quietly establishing itself while the rest of us are busy watching television, staring at our phones, and speaking to our friends and family through emojis.”
A series of tiresome tirades written for an audience assumed to be sympathetic and admiring of Tom Nichols, Our Own Worst Enemy consists of 200 pages of bluster, with little explanation of its core assertions and little argument for the connections it makes among them. Poor editing worsens this impression: Elementary errors in spelling and grammar errors give the book the feel of an online rant. An anecdote from the first chapter is retold in the fifth chapter, with the same analysis and even the same jargon. Of his lectures on the moral failings of stupid and slovenly nonexpert Americans, he writes that he is “more reticent to deliver such sermons these days” (he means “reluctant,” but reticence would have been nice).
So, the 2020 election, but without any of the pretense of an election?
At this point, I'd be fine with the entire neocon punditocracy getting pushed through a woodchipper.
This is one of the best summations of how entrenched the neocons are in the political paradigm of the early 2000s:
The fact that many voters can’t be neatly boxed in evokes real fury in Nichols. Nobody comes in for as much of his ire as Sanders-Trump voters and Obama-Obama-Trump voters.
Guys like Nichols possess an arrogance fueled by stupidity, and it's rooted in their belief that once someone aligns with a particular ideology, they should keep those beliefs forevermore. As someone whose politics were formed in the 1980s by Reagan's beligerence against communism, and the schizophrenic belief that government is bad, but that existing bureaucracies should still be run competently, and cemented during the Bush years where engagement in the culture war was entirely discarded in favor of promoting economic and foreign policy concerns exclusively, Nichols and other smug idiots like Jennifer Rubin and Jonah Goldberg think that anyone who doesn't support Yankee Republicanism like they do isn't really a conservative. They don't understand that the Reagan they worshipped was actually a populist who pushed back against the soft liberalism of the Rockefeller wing of the GOP before his administration was co-opted by the ex-Trotskyites who formed the core of the neocons that took over the party after 1988, and they certainly aren't bright enough to comprehend the intensity of the left's will to power.
In short, the neocons are still in the grieving stage of Trump snatching the party out of their hands with the blessing of the GOP's voter base, and can't come to grips with the fact that they are in the political wilderness now because people on both sides hate their guts. Slags like Rubin, Bill Kristol, Steve Schmidt, and Rick Wilson changed their political alignment entirely and are now Democrats, while others like Nichols, Goldberg, and David French continue to delude themselves that some kind of "moderate, center-right" coalition can save the country and unite Americans--even though they failed miserably at doing so the entire time their team was in charge of the GOP.
This guy being from "the right" further proves that it's not Left vs. Right, it's the Aristocracy vs the Peasants.
This.

Libs Betray America: Submarine Spy Couple Radicalized by Anti-Trump #Resistance
'Strong feminist and very liberal' teacher threatened to move to Australia after 2016 election, New York Times reports
https://freebeacon.com/politics/libs-betray-america/
The Annapolis couple charged with attempting to sell closely guarded secrets about U.S. nuclear submarines to a foreign power appears to have been radicalized by the anti-Trump #Resistance movement, according to a report published in the New York Times.
Jonathan Toebbe, an expert in nuclear physics and submarine propulsion, served in the Navy as an officer before being hired as a civilian consultant. He and his wife Diana, a teacher at a progressive private school, have been charged with violating the Atomic Energy Act's prohibition on sharing nuclear secrets.
The couple was busted by federal agents after delivering a memory card to a dead drop location in south-central Pennsylvania. They had allegedly proposed a payment of $100,000 in cryptocurrency in exchange for providing information to the foreign country, which has yet to be revealed.
The Times report described Ms. Toebbe as a "strong feminist and very liberal" academic who was "taken aback" by former president Donald Trump's election in 2016, and "mentioned several times that she was considering moving to Australia."
Toebbe's radicalization as a member of the anti-Trump #Resistance appears to have been a significant factor in compelling her to betray the United States. "She said she couldn't stand the current state of politics," one of her former students told the Times, which found no evidence that the couple was in financial distress, suggesting an alternative motive for their actions.
Let's not forget the cash. According to the FBI, the ultimate goal was for Toebbe to make 50 deliveries, at 100k USD each. With 5 million, they might've been able to afford a better house than the shack they were evidently living in, in Annapolis. (Which is odd: I'd have thought a tech lead on the Columbia project would be living in Groton, or wherever Naval Reactors wanted him.)
Still curious which country he was working for, and which country's embassy mailroom the FBI claims to have access to.
Keep in mind this was all a sting by the FBI, same as all their "foiled terrorist plot" bullshit - there never really was any foreign country involved and I'm not sure there was ever any top-secret information involved, either.
These idiots forgot the Snowden revelations and assumed their emails weren't being monitored by the NSA.
I am incredibly curious as to which country they thought they were communicating with.
If only we could fry these commies in the electric chair like we did the Rosenbergs.
See, I'm sympathetic to that point of view, but after Hillary, the Awans, the SF-86 debacle, and 10% to the big guy, (nevermind what Bill may have, allegedly, given the PRC in the '90s), it's hard for me to give much of a shit. Hang those fuckers first, and sure, we can extend the cross beam for these two traitors too.
I really wonder if it was Australia or France.

"Congress Raised the Debt Ceiling Again Without Doing Anything To Fix the $28 Trillion National Debt"
To reiterate what's been said so many times here in comments, in recent weeks, decoupling the debt ceiling from funding was a move in the right direction. In the past, raising the debt ceiling has been tied to additional funding meant to go over the ceiling. My understanding is that although they raised the debt ceiling this time, they did not authorize any additional funding.
McConnell's logic on this appears to have been tied to his strategy to defeat the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. He was concerned that there would be tremendous pressure on the moderate Democrats to support either the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill--or partially getting rid of the filibuster--if the debt ceiling weren't raised by October 18th.
I'm not sure I agree with his strategy to defeat the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. I think that the threat to get rid of the filibuster was a bluff by the Democrats, and McConnell fell for it. However, defeating the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill is far more important than raising the debt ceiling (sans further funding).
IF IF IF McConnell was right about the raising the debt ceiling being the best way to defeat the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill, then raising the debt ceiling was the most fiscally conservative thing to do. If we helped the progressives expand our existing entitlement programs--like Medicare and Medicaid--and let them create whole new one--like free community college for everyone--all because we wanted to say we defeated the debt ceiling? Then we'd be idiots.
My complaint is that I don't think Manchin, Sinema, or the moderate Democrats would have budged on the filibuster, and if this goes according to plan, we'll just be in the same place looking at the same issue and the same progressive threats about the filibuster again in December. What's the point of raising the ceiling to avoid a partial repeal of the filibuster if the Democrats can get McConnell to do whatever they want just by making the threat?
Acting as if McConnell gives a shit about the debt is hilarious. The same guy who wanted the TCJA? That one? That raised the deficit two fold to over a trillion bucks a year and added 2 trillion (a full 10% at that time) to the debt?
Keep acting as if he's anything better than a shitty politician. The fact anyone buys the garbage that the Republican party is "fiscally responsible" is absolutely laughable. They'd just rather have the money go to their rich friends rather than the voters.
I hate to say both sides, but it's both sides. Republicans have proven themselves to be fiscally immoderate as the Democrats.
And I have to lay the seeds of it at Reagan's feet. He massively cut taxes at the same time he massively raised spending. The tax cuts were on the right side of the Laffer Curve and we did get an economic boost, but it was never enough to make up for the increased spending.
"I hate to say both sides, but it’s both sides. Republicans have proven themselves to be fiscally immoderate as the Democrats."
The Democrats passed a $1.9 trillion Covid-19 bill in March (which was really just a bailout of the states) with zero Republican support. The Democrats passed it without a single Republican voted in either the House or the Senate. If a Republicans had been in the White House or had a majority in either chamber, it wouldn't have passed at all.
As I type, the Democrats are having trouble passing an additional $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. The reason it's a budget reconciliation bill is because they can't get any Republicans to vote for it, and budget reconciliation bills don't require any Republicans to vote for it. That's another $3.5 trillion that wouldn't be spent if the Republicans controlled the White House or either chamber in Congress.
If you persist in the theory that the Republicans are just as fiscally immoderate as the Democrats--despite 5.4 trillion facts to the contrary--that's your right. It's your right to be willfully stupid! And refusing to acknowledge facts that conflict with your theory is a more than sufficient definition for willful stupidity in this context.
Brandyshit is still trying to excuse his infantile rejection of Trump, since Trump was not the daddy-figure Brandyshit so definitely needs in a POTUS.
Like how Ken shut Brandybuck down with his superior use of logic. Oh, wait, Ken didn’t do that — he just said, “Brandybuck is a stupid head for not liking Republicans!”
And Mike can't read.
Did Team R propose 5.4T in spending? They did not.
So who is the fool, Mikey? Look in the fuckin mirror.

“I hate to say both sides”
Hahahaha! Good one.
fuck off and die, shitdinner.
McConnell's strategy to temporarily extend the debt ceiling until December will almost certainly help the Dems push through a >$2 Trillion reconciliation bill, as Dems will once again claim McConnell and the GOP are Grinch trying to destroy Christmas for poor hard working Americans.
The left wing media propagandists will repeat these same false claims (i.e. that McConnell and the GOP are sabotaging Christmas) until they vote to further extend to dept ceiling (to cover their >$2 Trillion reconciliation bill).
I agree.
I think he screwed up.
McConnell barely mustered the 11 Republican votes necessary to raise the debt ceiling past the filibuster. If and when this comes to a head again circa December 4th, I hope he can't get nine more Republican senators like himself to vote for it next time.
Rand Paul saved McConnell from a Tea Party challenge in Kentucky in exchange for McConnell's help in making it so Rand Paul wouldn't need to give up his Senate seat to run for president. Otherwise, McConnell would have gone the way of John Boehner--and for the same reasons.
If the Democrats pass the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill with the help of McConnell raising the debt ceiling, McConnell's time as Senate majority leader may be over--regardless of whether the Republicans take control of the Senate in 2022.
"If the Democrats pass the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill with the help of McConnell raising the debt ceiling, McConnell’s time as Senate majority leader may be over–regardless of whether the Republicans take control of the Senate in 2022."
I had thought McConnell was retiring after this current term? Moreover, AIUI seniority doesn't transfer to a new Senator, even if the new Senator is from the same party as the old Senator. Which, if true, means Kentucky can kiss goodbye what pork it now receives from McConnell's senior status and position. Heck of a thing for a state's voters to give up, no matter how much the incumbent may deserve getting primaried.
Think again = I think he screwed up.
Take a look at the legislative calendar between now and 12/3. Then layer a debt ceiling vote on top of that. Senator McConnell knows exactly what he is doing. Was he wrong about Garland? No.
I do not think any of it will pass; maybe just the infrastructure bill, worst case. Worse things have happened.
I hope you are right. I hope McConnell is right. He's been right about everything else so far. I want to be wrong. I want the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill defeated, and I'll be thrilled to tell everyone here how wrong I was if McConnell's plan defeats this bill.
Hope people are paying attention. The 1.6 infrastructure and the 2 trillion "compromise" is equal to the original ask of 3 5T. Nothing was cut. Just a fictional cut to help the narrative.
It's not just the size. It's what they spend it on.
Spending $1.6 trillion on pork isn't as bad as permanently increasing entitlements and creating whole new entitlement programs that will never be terminated.
Except you do understand Ken that the cuts will simply be earlier sunsets that will never sunset right? They already did this for the 3.5T number at 9 years. Now they go 5 and they hit 2T
It was bad strategy if it was meant to defeat the reconciliation bill. It gives Dems 2 more months to reach agreement on whether it will be 3.5 trillion or 2.5 trillion or somewhere in between.
The only way the move makes sense is if it shifts the "who's the bad guy" narrative from "It's the GOP, because Grandma won't get her SS check" to "It's the Dems, since they voted unanimously to raise the debt ceiling, and now they're gonna spend another 3.5 trillion or so". But don't count on the media changing to that narrative.
The question is whether the moderate Democrats would rather cave on the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill or take the blame for the government missing an interest payment, social security checks not going out, and disabled veterans going without.
I strongly suspect the Democrats were bluffing, and they would have gone through the onerous process of exempting every bill that would take us over the debt ceiling on a case by case basis--rather than default on the government's debt. I could be wrong!
And, regardless of whether McConnell is right, I was trying to be true to his reasoning. I do not doubt his desire to kill the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. He has led the Republicans to withhold their support for it unanimously in all sorts of ways. I think his strategy is wrong.
The majority of Congress does not care about the debt. The controlling faction of the Democrats buy into the Modern Monetary Theory, which says the debt is no object to the preferred level of spending. Of course, they are not going to fix the debt problem. It is not a problem to them.
Both sides. The Republicans seemed concerned, briefly, about the "debt ceiling" but seem wholly unconcerned about the debt itself or even new spending. Heck, they love new spending, so long as their names get attached to it.
6T is totally the same as 600B. False equivalence seems to be your go to.
The true issue is baseline budgeting that grows government by over 3% yearly automatically.
But Trump wasn't like Brandyshit's daddy!!!!!
Stuff it up your ass, Brandyshit.
Why do you defend Big Government Trump all the time, sevo?
Did Trump hypnotize you?

turd lies; it’s all he does.
So, the Democrats believe in MMT and therefore think it’s OK to spend without limit.
The Republicans don’t believe in MMT and supposedly have sound economic beliefs — that means the Republicans know they are overspending but do it, anyway.
The first elected person I heard defend MMT was Dick Cheney:
"Reagan proved that deficits don't matter" - his famous quote. Since then spend spend spend....
turd lies. It’s what turd does. turd is a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to even know he’s lying and that others are well aware of it.

I thought you were a big fan of Dick and Liz and all the other neocons?
Dick Cheney loved him some military spending!
Entitlements are 2/3rds of federal spending shit for brains.
Is that how you rationalize supporting the left?
To be fair, the Dems seem to love new spending a whole lot more.
And the rest of them will "fix" the debt problem by raising taxes, which is also bad. Cut spending.
The debt ceiling is fucking stupid anyway. It should be removed entirely as it does nothing but take us to brinkmanship every time. It has jack shit to do with new debt- it's just servicing existing debt. And because of that, there's no reason to ever have it.
Congress can get serious about the debt without some huge economic crash looming over us every so many months because like you said- it doesn't do anything anyway. It's used as a political tool- not a monetary one. Just get rid of it and start voting in different people if you really want to decrease the debt.
Or, here's a crazy idea, they could actually abide by it.
Fuck you, cut spending!
.. start voting in different people if you really want to decrease the debt.
With the new and improved fortified elections? Right.
The debt ceiling is meant to be a limit. If you have to borrow more to make the minimum payments on your credit card, you're broke.
> When a missing teen sparked a moral panic about Dungeons & Dragons.
Yeah, I remember my parents hearing from a guest speakers at the church about the satanic aspects of Dungeons and Dragons. When they came home they asked such silly questions as "Do you really light candles when you play the game?", and "do you always have to do what the dungeon master says?"
So I have them the books (AD&D) so they could read them themselves. I was a bit worried about the pagan deities in the monster manual, but that's not what bothered my father. "You actually get rewarded with experience points for killing people?".
Oh well, I soon moved on as soon as I discovered there were games OTHER than Dungeons and Dragons. Better games just not as flashy. Foamy stouts instead of TSR's insipid lite pilseners. So MERP, RM, RQ, etc. Most games were crap, but the 80s and 90s were the heyday of RPGs. Now that Zoom is ubiquitous, I'm thinking of starting up a new campaign with my old gaming friends. One friend wants to get his pre-teen daughter into gaming, and she seems up for it. Gosh, that's how you start a new moral panic!
How embarrassing it must be to be you.
"Now that Zoom is ubiquitous, I’m thinking of starting up a new campaign with my old gaming friends."
Why not just use roll20?
Notice it is on zoom because he panics as a lefty over covid.
No offense as both can work (roll20 is good)but they don't compare playing to playing in person.
Also I think they system is good and I've played pretty much all of them and for still being youngish part of creating some. I think whitewolf and shadowrun had great systems. Rollmaster is too much brandy, but great in theory.
Brandybuck played Dungeons & Dragons
Seems about right.
There was also another favorite of mine, Villians and Vigilantes, wherein you would pick from Superheroes or Supervillians and roll the multi-sided die to determine superpowers and how many points you get or lose from using the powers in certain scenarios. Perfect for the comic book nerd!
Of course, that, too, wouldn't have satisfied the moral panickers. There was a local minister, I think it was Rev. Joe Chambers, who was actually accusing He-Man: Masters of the Universe and She-Ra:Princess of Power of endorsing "devil-worship" ("By The Power of Greyskull!") and at the same time endorsing "Secular Humanism" for implying that humans can be "Masters of the Universe" rather than JHVH-1.
Oh, yeah, "Devil-worship" and Secular Humanism like this:

(The only problem with the advice is that now, kids may he turing to the wrong people for help.)
Anyway, there's always a punchbowl pisser somewhere, and they've come back in swarms nowadays.
Meanwhile, at about the same time, "The War on (Some) Drugs" was doing such a bang-up job on crack cocaine gang wars in the streets and "carjacking" entered into our cultural lexicon.
Reason isn't on it.
Facebook Dangerous Individuals and Organizations List (Reproduced Snapshot)

Neither is antifa. But they're just an idea, or so I'm told.
They did include the Not Fucking Around Club, which was a touch surprising. But yeah, lots of Proud Boys, Oathkeepers, and nothing Antifa, Chapo Trap House, or other ultra-Left shitheads. Just an idea...
I was surprised to not see a few groups and individuals that I'd have expected on such a list.
Whose Children Are These?
From vaccine mandates to enabling life-altering surgery for children, California’s public officials are usurping the role of parents.
https://www.city-journal.org/california-usurping-the-role-of-parents
California parents have more to contend with than just the vaccine mandate, however. Last month, AB 1184, cosponsored by Planned Parenthood, became law. As the California Family Council explains, the law “prohibits insurance companies from revealing to the policyholder the ‘sensitive services’ of anyone on their policy, including minor children, even though the policy owner is financially responsible for the services.” The term “sensitive services” refers to all health care services related to mental or behavioral health, sexual and reproductive health (including abortions), sexually transmitted infections, substance-use disorder, and gender-affirming care. The bill doesn’t define “gender affirming care,” but according to the University of California, San Francisco, the concept includes hormone therapy and a laundry list of surgeries including vaginectomy, scrotoplasty, voice modification, and others. These procedures can begin when a child is just 12—starting with puberty blockers, paid for under the family’s insurance policy. When the statement is sent home, no explanation is offered of any of these procedures. Parents are reduced to bill-paying bystanders.
The State will give the children all the attention and care they need.
Apparel prices also declined 1.1% in September while transportation services dropped 0.5%
Year over year prices were bound to rise from the depths of the Trump slump.
But they are correcting again.
Transitory, bitches!
turd lies. It's what turd does. turd is a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to even know he's lying and that others are well aware of it.

They wouldn't if Obama's Chained CPI had passed.
BUT NOOOOOO!
both parties wanted nothing to do with those spending cuts

Don't fail Joe, Americans:

"American consumers, unused to empty store shelves, may need to be flexible and patient, White House officials said."
SleepyJoe has a plan to “fix it”.
No worries
Fix it? The regime doesn't think it's broken.
We're always letting Grandpa Joe down.
Buttigieg is handling the supply chain crisis, but it's going to take some time. Widening the Hershey Highway isn't as simple as you may think.
He will ram it through in the end.
Problems will be fixed in the twink of an eye...
I am NOT picking up what you're putting down.
If Buttigieg rams anything through, I suspect it will be a first for him. He doesn't strike me as the sort whose ever been on top of things.
“American consumers, unused to empty store shelves, may need to be flexible and patient, White House officials said.”
'Bout a year and a half ago, when Newsom, et al, knee-capped the economy, several of us here mentioned that it's easy to kill an economy with coercion, but restarting it isn't nearly as easy. And the shutdowns were done without a single thought to any collateral damage; 'if we save just one life!' bullshit, right JFree?
Of course, Newsom and friends have never sullied themselves by actually being involved with that crass activity known as "business", so, while I'm sure they got advice to tread carefully, they simply pulled the plug!
Overnight, we went from a (largely) market-based economy to a planned economy. Now, 18 months later, the same fucking ignoramuses who got us into this are 'planning' the reopening of the economy.
Nowhere and never has a planned economy delivered anything other than a rapid or, at best, slowly developing disaster.
You've got to raise the debt limit.
why?
I second this question. Perhaps, in the past, there was a point at which that logic was reasonable, but it was before I was born and likely before my parents were born. The "loose cow" of Mr. Boehm's analogy is not alive anymore. Its descendants now roam the hills in great herds having never known the walls of a barn, a barn which collapsed from disrepair a generation ago. There is no putting "the cow" back in "the barn" and we must fundamentally rethink this cow-chasing operation from the ground up.

Senator Collins said Dems should now raise it on their own.
I think I've figured out their game.
Don't bring up the national debt when the budget is up for consideration, but vote for debt-increasing levels of spending.
Then when the debt ceiling comes up, either make a big gesture of keeping the ceiling where it is, or do the "responsible" thing and declare "we have to pay for that shit we already appropriated!"
Frame the matter in a no-win way, avoid hard choices about which spending to cut, wrap a debt-increase in the national flag and slogans of responsibility, lather, rinse, repeat.

The dead whale is still floating, somehow. Might as well get a few more bites in.
Now John McAfee out of this...
Every damn time.
Also you forgot "Float the idea of minting a trillion dollar coin to solve the problem"
We're gonna need a lot more coins.
But if they're silver instead of platinum, and we need 30 of them, someone's gonna get all caught up in the historical significance.
'Cept, of course, it's not historical, M'Lady. *Tips Fedora!*
At this point, a $Trillion Dollar Coin is probably made of floatable material like balsa wood.
"The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the first time authorized the marketing of a vaping product on the grounds that it can help smokers quit."
Just as I've predicted since 2011 (when FDA first announced its intent to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products), the FDA has banned >99.9% of nicotine vapor products now on the US market, and has created a multi billion dollar e-cigarette monopoly for one of the worlds largest cigarette manufacturers (i.e. British American Tobacco, which owns RJ Reynolds).
But don't expect anyone at Biden's FTC to criticize the billion dollar monopoly FDA's Mitch Zeller has created for Big Tobacco.
To avoid being called a monopolist bureaucrat, Mitch will likely approve several other nicotine vapor brands to create a billion dollar nicotine vapor oligopoly controlled by the worlds largest cigarette manufacturers, who make far more money on cigarettes than on vapes, which have slashed cigarette sales during the past decade.
Note that FDA's announcement about its approval of several Vuse vapor brands at
https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/youth-e-cigarette-use-remains-serious-public-health-concern-amid-covid-19-pandemic
cited 2021 NYTS data on e-cigarette use by American middle and high school students (as a major public health problem), but failed to mention that e-cigarette use by 6th - 12th graders has plummeted by >70% since 2019.
Any ideas on why youth vaping dropped?
And if they are vaping, at least it's still less bad than smoking, which is kind of a win. When I was in high school probably 1/4 of the student body was smoking by graduation.
It's probably more annoying than cool.
Fuck Phil Murphy

One of the authors of the Great Barrington Declaration, Martin Kulldorff, has written a scathing criticism of the British Medical Journal's op/ed that lied about and demonized him and the GBD.
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/covid-lockdown-and-the-retreat-of-scientific-debate
The badmouthing of the GBD was just disgusting. Reasonable people can disagree, but the failure to have any public debate on what they wrote really did a lot of harm.
Good takedown. Nobody gets that upset about health recommendations unless their grift is being hampered.
When lawmakers talk about "reforming" Section 230, which protects free speech on the internet, they're really talking about repealing it:
Because it's impossible for you clowns to admit that the abuse of the Good Samaritan clause does more to aid fascism, than to foster free speech. Contrary to the intent of congress at the time.
It's a mechanism that allows elected officials to censor the people, while evading the First Amendment. And it's a disaster for freedom and free speech.
Looks at pictures from Del Rio, Texas. Laughs heartily.
28 trillion dollar national debt? That was a few weeks ago.
Today it's up to 28.87 trillion, on its way to 29 trillion (then 30, then infinity and beyond.)
Yet somehow those who don't want to raise the debt ceiling every few months are the ones destroying things, and not the people who want to keep adding to the debt mountain.
If Republicans had refused to raise the debt ceiling, the Reason headline would have been something like "The debt is too high, but this is not the way to address it.", followed by several paragraphs about how Trump is to blame for the Republicans doing the wrong thing.
The shtick of Reason writers is always to find fault and claim their own moral superiority. Political compromise? Realistic solutions? Strategic choices? That doesn't interest Reason.
What we really need to do is to lower the debt ceiling. If Congress passed legislation that systematically reduced the debt ceiling over time, the economy could be rebuilt on a solid foundation. The productive sector could grow, the unproductive sector would shrink. Lowering the debt ceiling would force federal-government budget cutting on a large scale. This would free up resources (labor, land, and capital) and force a cutback in the federal government's regulatory apparatus, one of the biggest drags on our economy. Entrepreneurs in the productive sectors would have an ever-increasing proportion of resources at their disposal, while companies that capitalized on the federal budget would have an ever-declining share of such resources. Congress would have to cut the pay and benefits of its employees as well as the number of such employees. The federal government could sell off some of its resources. It has tens of thousands of buildings that are no longer in use, and it owns over 20 percent of all land outside of Alaska. Reducing the debt ceiling would force the government to stop borrowing so much money from credit markets. This would leave significantly more credit available for the private sector. The debt ceiling is like the limit on your credit card, except the federal government sets the limit on itself. It's past time to slice up the federal government's credit cards.
We don't even need to be that radical (and although I like your plan, it would have no chance of getting through Congress). People like free stuff, and politicians hate to be the ones cutting off the gravy train.
The way out is to cap annual spending increases, and let tax revenues grow slowly to catch up, as the economy grows. Spending increases could be capped to today's level (best option), or to 1 or 2 pct annual growth, or to match population growth, or to match inflation, or whatever. Any limit on annual spending growth would be far better than today's plan (spend as much as you can dream of spending, and then some).
At least that WAS the way out just a few years ago when spending was 4 trillion and tax revenues were 3 trillion. Now spending is 6 trillion and tax revenues are 4 trillion, so it's going to take a lot longer. And much longer than that if the Dems keep jacking up total spend on new and unnecessary things (we lived without them before so they are demonstrably unnecessary.)
Comparing federal spending to "percent of GDP" is the wrong way to benchmark it. Government spending should be constrained to a certain set of Constitutional functions (we can argue about what those are, but just start with what we have now, and don't add any new items.) Then as the economy grows the percent of GDP we need to spend on those items should go DOWN over time.
Section 230 doesn't protect free speech on the Internet. It protects censorship on the Internet. I mean, seriously, look at the history.
A number of court rulings in the 1990s held that if a digital platform didn't exercise editorial control over user posts, it wasn't liable for the content of the posts, but if it did exercise editorial control, it was liable for the content it left up. The obvious result of that was that platforms were discouraged from taking down things in order to avoid liability.
Congress, however, wanted certain categories of speech to be censored. So it passed the Communications Decency Act in order to do so. Among the provisions, it included one allowing platforms to take down the kinds of speech Congress wanted censored without incurring liability. That part was Section 230.
So, let's be utterly clear. Section 230 deputizes private actors to carry out a Congressionally-designed censorship agenda by giving them special legal immunity. It is a government policy designed to encourage, and in practice does encourage, platforms to limit the free speech of the general public.
Congress Has Always Raised the Debt Ceiling Without Doing Anything To Fix the National Debt
Which party is in control makes no difference. The fights over the debt ceiling are political theater.
I will admit this time may be different, they may actually cause a financial collapse. How long can you create nonexistent money out of thin air before it cause financial collapse? Not infinitely.
