Why Is This Beer Banned in 15 States?

A special edition Samuel Adams beer is helping to highlight silly state alcohol restrictions. Each fall, Samuel Adams puts out a new "Utopias" beer, with this year's set to be released on October 11. The 2021 Samuel Adams Utopias clocks in at 28 percent alcohol by volume (ABV)—making it illegal in 15 states.

"If you live in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia, don't even look. Utopias is illegal in those states because of its high alcohol content," according to the Samuel Adams website.

Your typical beer used to clock in around or under 5 percent ABV. But recent years have seen an explosion of craft beers—especially India pale ales—with 6, 7, or even 8 percent ABV, and many companies rolling out even higher-alcohol-content brews. (For comparison, wine tends to have an ABV around 11 or 12 percent, and spirits above 40 percent.)

Many states have ABV-based rules around where alcohol can be sold. For instance, in Mississippi, only beer at 5 percent ABV and under can be sold in grocery and convenience stores, though beer up to 10 percent ABV can be sold in specialty stores. In Ohio, liquor at more than 21 percent ABV can only be sold in liquor stores, though groceries and other stores can sell lower ABV spirits and liqueurs.

In addition, many states outright ban beer above a certain ABV, even though it's perfectly legal to buy wine or spirits at that alcohol level.

"Such laws are largely holdovers from the demise of Prohibition, when states, concerned about the return of legal alcohol, imposed their own piecemeal restrictions as checks on drunkenness and alcoholism," explained The Week a few years ago. "Like many blue laws, they've since sat on the books, growing dusty, outdated, and forgotten. That is, until the recent craft beer explosion."

The good news is that a number of states have been responding to market forces and raising their limits for beer ABV. It's a trend that began in the '00s. "Montana raised its limit to 14 percent in 2008, while Vermont upped its cap to 16 percent," notes The Week. "Alabama and West Virginia followed suit one year later, increasing their ABV limits to 13.9 percent and 12 percent, respectively, from 6 percent."

In recent years, this trend has grown, with more states loosening ABV restrictions by locale or overall and some, like West Virginia, pushing them even higher. In 2019, West Virginia moved its ABV limit up to 15 percent.

Utah in 2019 finally let go of its rule requiring a limit of 4 percent ABV (or 3.2 percent alcohol by weight) for beers sold in grocery and convenience stores—though nonstate stores are still limited to selling 5 percent ABV beer. Kansas dismissed a similar rule back in 2017, allowing beer up to 6 percent ABV to be sold outside specialty stores. Minnesota now remains the only state where such a law is in place.

In 2017, Tennessee raised its overall beer ABV limit from about 6.2 percent to around 10.1 percent.

In 2016, Ohio said beer could go above 12 percent ABV so long as it's labeled "high alcohol beer."

But unlike Ohio, a number of states still cap their beer ABV limits in the mid-teens range no matter what sort of labeling it has.

This is especially true in the South. In Georgia, for instance, the ABV cap for beer is 14 percent. In North Carolina, it's 15 percent and in South Carolina, it's 17.5 percent.

FOLLOW-UP

A Texas abortion doctor seems to be inviting lawsuits against him, by very publicly announcing that he performed an abortion in violation of the new state law. The Supreme Court recently declined to block the law, on the grounds that a preenforcement challenge to it didn't fly. So the doc's admission could be a way to spur legal action that would allow the constitutionality of the law to be considered.

"On the morning of Sept. 6, I provided an abortion to a woman who, though still in her first trimester, was beyond the state's new limit," writes Alan Braid in The Washington Post. "I acted because I had a duty of care to this patient, as I do for all patients, and because she has a fundamental right to receive this care. I fully understood that there could be legal consequences — but I wanted to make sure that Texas didn't get away with its bid to prevent this blatantly unconstitutional law from being tested."

"I understand that by providing an abortion beyond the new legal limit, I am taking a personal risk, but it's something I believe in strongly. Represented by the Center for Reproductive Rights, my clinics are among the plaintiffs in an ongoing federal lawsuit to stop S.B. 8," he points out. More here.

Child care worker shortage stems from strict regulations, state sloth. The Washington Post details a disturbing situation in U.S. child care. "The child-care services industry is still down 126,700 workers — more than a 10 percent decline from pre-pandemic levels, Labor Department data shows. While many industries complain they can't find enough workers, the hiring situation is more dire in child-care than in restaurants right now." Workers are quitting, or simply not returning, citing low pay and benefits. ("The pay is absolute crap for what's required for the position," one former child care worker, Tanzie Roberts, told the Post. "I can't afford to live on my own and work the child-care jobs that I am qualified for.")

Unable to find staff, many centers are shutting down or contemplating it. At the root of this conundrum may be the stringent regulations placed on day cares and other child care facilities.

"The reason child-care centers pay less than service sector jobs is tied to their business model. Staffing costs are by far the biggest budget item because many must abide by local laws that mandate one caregiver per three to five kids, depending on their ages and the area of the country," reports the Post. "Child-care labor costs can be as much as 50 to 60 percent of a day care budget, according to a Treasury report. By contrast, restaurant labor costs tend to be about 30 percent of their budgets."

"Another problem that child-care providers cite in hiring is increased difficulty in obtaining the necessary criminal background checks for workers during the pandemic, especially from state government offices," the Post says. "Some states have been especially slow to release background checks during the pandemic, numerous child-care directors and advocates told Post."

Strangely, a lot of the folks cited in the article (and the article itself) call for more government subsidies and involvement in the industry in order to save it. But isn't that only guaranteed to raise regulations, obstacles, and costs?

CORRECTION: This post previously misstated the ABV limit for beer sold in Mississippi stores. The state allows beer up to 10 percent ABV to be sold anywhere that holds a beer permit.

With a name like Sam Adams Utopias, I wonder if the beer bottle sports Robbespierre's Madame Guillotine?

Or perhaps a collector's set of Utopias would portray Thomas More's same-named ideal society where every communal household had it's own slave...

John Calvin's Geneva with the burning at the stake of Michael Servetus for arguing against the Trinity...

The Mayflower Compact with starving Pilgrims...

the 1848 Paris Commune with rioting Commies...

Sociologist George Fitzhugh's ideal society, which was the Southern slave plantation...

Joseph Smith's Nauvoo with hoodwinked Mormons in Magic Underwear...

As well as contemporary failed Utopias such as The Former Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Pot Pot's Kampuchea, Rev. Jim Jones' Jonestown, Occupy Wall Street, Seattle's CHAZ/CHOP.

Really, you could make a whole Collector's Case of failed Utopias...and it might just drive you to drink them all!

    1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

Difficulty: you dont actually know what sarcasm is.

                    See Fist for an example.

                    1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Because having the name "sarcasmic" means I must be sarcastic all the time. Sure.

Does that mean JesseAz means you must be a moron all the time? I haven't meant many people named Jesse, but I could beat them all at chess.

                    2. JesseAz   4 years ago

Your example doesn't even make sense since I don't have Moron in my name. This is why you're terrible at humor just like you are at cooking and most likely beer making (the alcoholic's false sense of confidence). And I would laugh at you trying to play checkers against someone playing chess.

The problem is what you claim is sarcasm is just stupid hyperbolic strawmen arguments. It is what you run to when people call you out.

                    3. sarcasmic   4 years ago

The entire problem here is trying to frame these issues in terms of "good guys" and "bad guys". Knock it off with this black/white thinking. There are no "good guys" and there are no "bad guys". There are only "guys" with various degrees of good ideas and bad ideas mixed in.

                1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Oh, come on. Ideas are judged by the politics of the person. Not on merit. Good and bad are functions of politics and nothing else. If you judge ideas based upon the ideas themselves then you're not on a team, and that makes you worse than being on the other team. Haven't you learned anything from these comments?

                    1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I think of Bastiat's "The Law".

                      http://bastiat.org/en/the_law.html

                      Specifically:

No society can exist unless the laws are respected to a certain degree. The safest way to make laws respected is to make them respectable. When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law. These two evils are of equal consequence, and it would be difficult for a person to choose between them.

                      I chose morality.

                    2. sarcasmic   4 years ago

What's sad to me is that Bastiat and other thinkers are looked down upon by the current commentariat. Sowell, Friedman and other economists are just ignored because of partisan politics. I thought it was bad a dozen years ago. That was sanity compared to now.

Baloney. You may disagree with the mandates, as I do, but they are trying to deal with a very real public health crisis.

We're also dealing with a serious and very real crisis of our rights being ignored and abused. I'm a lot more worried about that. Viruses come and go. It's hard to get rights back once they have been lost.

                    2. Cronut   4 years ago

So you're willing to offer some flexibilty with regard to individual rights because of a public health emergency?

That's not a smart position to take.

Obesity is a very real health crisis and you have never crowed about that Mike. You only care about the politics of covid. You'd rather see kids in masks than note that for those under 65, covid isn't the end of the world. Even those above 70 it isn't the end of the world. You see an opportunity to push your beliefs through Covid.

I don't think one can make such an absolute statement like that.

I also don't think one should make the leap that if someone favors a bad policy, then that necessarily makes the individual a *bad person*. Good people can sometimes have bad ideas, and bad people can sometimes have good ideas.

                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn1VxaMEjRU

This isn't just a question of good or bad policy, it is a question of real moral evil. It is morally wrong to force or even demand without force that other people to undergo medical procedure to protect you from a natural pathogen. It is wrong.

If one finds themselves on the side that is demanding a moral evil, they are on the bad team. They are a bad guy. They can solve this problem very quickly by not being counted among those people claiming a moral obligation to stick needles in kids arms. Then they will be "unaligned".

What if someone’s body is infected with COVID-19 and every breath they are exhaling in a common area is spreading the COVID-19 virus?

If you are vaccinated are you not protected? If someone is medically unable to get the vaccine should they then be ostracized and/or not allowed out? What about children? They can't be vaccinated, yet can still be infected. How do you resolve that dilemma? With the false security of a mask? What about the potential to die? Should your fear of death by infection by the unclean have more merit than another's fear of dying by lethal injection?
The counter-arguments are all the reasons why the vaccine should be a choice and not a political argument. If you want it, get it. If not, nobody's business but your own.

                    6. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

"If you are vaccinated are you not protected?"

No, not completely. Vaccines work best when most of the population gets vaccinated, therefore halting spread and mutation of the disease. This is elementary knowledge, that no educated person should be asking at this point.

                    7. Overt   4 years ago

This is a non sequitor from Mike, everyone. He knows the answer to this has been and always will be:

If you are *infected* knowingly, you ought to isolate and quarantine. If you are unknowingly infected by a natural pathogen, then it isn't your responsibility. Vaccination has nothing to do with weather or not you choose to run around spreading a virus while infected.

                3. Cronut   4 years ago

Just stop. This is not a "both sides" issue.

Using government force to make someone have a medical procedure that they don't want is morally indefensible. It's not just a "bad idea" of any degree.

Any time you have to use government force to compel a person to take action they don't want to take, you're the bad guy.

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

You and the left want to use societal pressure

How is using societal pressure, INSTEAD of government coercion, unlibertarian?

          1. JesseAz   4 years ago

Because you are doing it as a means to harm others Jeff.

            "Doctors shouldn't treat the unvaccinated"
"Unvaccinated shouldn't be allowed to go out of their house"
"Unvaccinated should be fired from the jobs"
"Unvaccinated should be evicted from their homes"

Those are literal violations of the NAP. And you applaud it because you think your views are allowed to disrupt the free choice of others. You're a statist. You don't even hide it.

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

I dispute all of the statements that you made, but let's just take this one for example:

“Unvaccinated should be fired from the jobs”

Honest question Jesse, do you favor the concept of at-will employment, or not? That a private employer may fire an employee for any reason whatsoever, consistent with the terms of that employee's contract? Because if you do, then firing an individual for refusing to get vaccinated is no different than firing an individual for refusing to abide by a dress code, or for showing up late, or for taking too long of a lunch break, or for pissing off the boss, or for any other arbitrary and subjective reason. And it isn't a violation of the NAP because there was no aggression and no coercion - no one has any right to a particular job from a particular employer. It is generally the left-wing libertarians who tend to oppose at-will employment, and like to claim that there is such a thing as a "right to a job". Is that where you stand, Jesse?

              1. Cronut   4 years ago

                Stop.

This isn't an issue of at-will employment. Not any more. The federal government has dictated to employers what they must do, so they no longer have a choice in how they operate.

The vaccine mandate is wrong, supporting it makes you a bad person, and stop trying to pretend it's about anything else other than government force.

                1. JesseAz   4 years ago

Jeff wants to ignore that point to try to get an argumentation win. That or he is too stupid to realize he is arguing from a fascist viewpoint.

                2. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

A vaccine mandate by government is wrong. A vaccine mandate imposed by a private employer on its own employees, is completely up to them and we as libertarians should support the employer's right to do so.

              2. JesseAz   4 years ago

Hey look, Jeff deflects because he knows he is on the side of statists!

Jeff, I believe at at-will. I do not believe in at-will at the behest of government which is the reality we are currently in, not the made up example you tried to push.

It is government, see Biden's declaration this month, that is pushing for business to force vaccinations. They are not doing it independently. You ignore this because you are a statist. You are basically pro fascism at this point.

                1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

Ultimately you seem to have a hard time discussing an issue in the abstract, insisting instead of analyzing everything in terms of in-the-moment tribal politics.

                  It is government,

We were talking about SOCIETAL PRESSURE, not government coercion.

They are not doing it independently.

There were PLENTY of businesses pushing to mandate vaccination for their employees even before Biden's declaration. See for example:

                  https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/06/22/world/covid-vaccine-coronavirus-mask

This happened all the way back in June. Did you support the employer's right to fire employees who refused to get vaccinated?

Yeah, it’s way different, Jeff. There’s millions who won’t get the jab, including first responders and nurses.

Honest question Jeff, do you actually want anarchy and a collapsed economy?

"How is using societal pressure, INSTEAD of government coercion, unlibertarian?"

Because you are trying to pressure people to conform to a moral code that is not libertarian. You are insisting that people have a moral obligation to act on your behalf. And that is completely against the spirit of libertarian thought.

Do you believe it is libertarian to use societal pressure to dissuade drug use? Should society pressure businesses to drug test all its employees to see if they use recreational drugs? Should businesses be firing people if they aren't married and having kids by 25? Should we pressure businesses to test people for communist tendencies before working at the company?

Ultimately, I have less problem with people who are just morally confused as you are. I think your opinions are founded on irrational fear and an inability to really think about who owes what to whom. But when you start trying to fear-monger other businesses and members of society to shame and potentially ostracize people who don't live up to your confused moral code, then- yes- I see that as very unlibertarian. You have just substituted a formal government with a mob.

Think back to the polio vaccination push. Okay, hardly anyone here is old enough to remember it. But the news reports are still around. Other than the anti-flouridation crowd, there was no controversy. No partisan politics. People got vaccinated and their children vaccinated because they could see the results of catching polio.

Today, a year and half after COVID hit, people are STILL claiming it's no worse than the flu. That's the difference. The media is all big on reporting about infinitesimally small risks of vaccinations and mostly ignoring the real risks of COVID infections, which include long term debilitating hospitalization, and death. For a while COVID was the single largest killer of people in the US, and no one cared. Now health disease is back up on top, but that's because most people got vaccinated.

        1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

I can’t really look back, of course, because it was before my time. But even when I was a kid I still learned that Jonas Salk was a hero. I don’t even know where I learned it; it was just one of those facts one absorbed as a child.

Nowadays, there would be someone on Twitter trying to cancel Salk for some reason or another.

          1. Overt   4 years ago

Yes this was the propaganda that the government put out. Despite the NIH screaming for him to stop, he was able to get his vaccine out ahead of Sabin whose production process was not as fraught with peril. Had Salk not used his clout to override the launch of the Polio vaccine, thousands of kids would have not been paralyzed and hundreds would have lived.

This is a perfect example of how the government, when it heavily controlled most means of communication, could bring unspeakable damage on its population.

        2. Overt   4 years ago

"Think back to the polio vaccination push. Okay, hardly anyone here is old enough to remember it. But the news reports are still around. You are fucking CRAZY.

The (Salk) polio vaccine was initially rolled out in a massive experiment on children without parental consent- recruiting orphanages under religious/government control. This was despite the fact that the NIH had evidence testing on monkeys that suggested that the vaccine still had active viruses in it. Even though they observed about a dozen kids in this test trial get paralyzed, they went forward with broader testing (not telling parents the risks). This "caused 40 000 cases of polio, leaving 200 children with varying degrees of paralysis and killing 10."
          https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1383764/

The polio vaccine was a miracle, but it came with a cost. And if we can learn any lesson, it was that the government then was just as focused on broad policies at the cost of individual rights then, as it is today.

          1. JesseAz   4 years ago

This. Comparing it to the polio roll out is exactly why people are skeptical. It also took well over a decade foe the full roll put to occur.

          2. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

Like all our lefties here, Mike doesn't know history.

Also, my Dad was vaccinated and still ended up with polio. He wore leg braces a la Forrest Gump from 5 1/2 to 7.

Furthermore, like smallpox, polio didn't have many animal reservoirs to reinfect people from. It's now looking like every mammal is a reservoir. Like with the flu virus, vaccination will ameliorate the symptoms but it will never eliminate Covid.

        3. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Think back to the polio vaccination push. Okay, hardly anyone here is old enough to remember it. But the news reports are still around. Other than the anti-flouridation crowd, there was no controversy. No partisan politics. People got vaccinated and their children vaccinated because they could see the results of catching polio.

Why do Boomers constantly bring up the polio vaccine? There's literally no parallel that can be made here.

Polio was a highly virulent illness that crippled nearly everyone who caught it, if it didn't kill them outright. The polio vaccine was developed and tested for YEARS before it went on the market. It was designed specifically to treat kids and pregnant women in particular. It was developed as a traditional vaccine that lasts for decades, not 6-8 months. When a contaminated batch caused people to be infected with polio, greater oversight of its development was instituted.

Hell, the 1976 swine flu vaccine was pulled after just 32 people died from it. There's already been over 7,600 deaths attributed to the COVID vaccines in less than a year.

There's no valid comparison to be made between the polio vaccine drive and the COVID not-a-vaccines.

          1. JesseAz   4 years ago

And this. And not even a mention of only 8 deaths from children under 16 over the last year. Yet thousands of cases of vaccine side effects on trials on children. That is why Pfizer had to lower doses for their latest push for kids.

          2. Square = Circle   4 years ago

Polio was a highly virulent illness that crippled nearly everyone who caught it, if it didn’t kill them outright.

^ Polio has a CFR of about 20%, i.e. about 100 times worse than COVID-alpha, and does permanent damage to survivors with high frequency. Nobody needed convincing that polio was a serious problem.

          3. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I'll add that Salk even refused to patent the vaccine so that it could be cheaply made and distributed. Have ANY of the pharma companies done the same with their "vaccines"?

        4. Zeb   4 years ago

It's political because it is being forced on people. It will inevitably be political if that happens. Use honest persuasion and kindness, not insults and coercion and there will be less resistance.
And there is zero chance of eradicating this virus as happened with polio and smallpox. So the situations aren't really comparable. Covid is a minor to moderate illness for most people and it's not going away.

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

The real concern right now is that hospitals appear to be completely uninterested now in modifying their protocols to provide preventative or mitigating treatment, versus "prescribe Remedisvir, stick them on a vent, and wait for them to die." The data has been crystal clear that putting people with COVID on vents increases their chances of death, particularly due to sepsis or intubation-induced pneumonia. Having someone with COVID on a vent longer than 48 hours is literally risking their life even more than COVID. And then these assholes wonder why people are buying the vet version of ivermectin in a desperate attempt to stay out of the hospital.

Hospitals are, quite literally, killing people right now to make a political point, as no real scientific institution would otherwise deliberately continue a practice that they know exponentially increases a person's chance of dying.

If anyone does catch the coof, their best bet at this point appears to be to stay away from the hospital as long as possible, because they don't give a shit at this point whether anyone with COVID actually lives or die, vaccinated or not.

"It’s pretty fucked up that vaccination is seen as a cultural war issue rather than a medical issue."

For the benefit of the thread, here is Mike on another disingenuous posting spree. He loves to drop into a thread and make some sort of "Fence Sitter" statement- most especially when the Left is looking real bad, like forcing people to stick needles in their arms.

But make no mistake, in the next posts it is all criticism of the right. For some reason, it wouldn't be a culture war issue if those stupid right wingers would just vaccinate. He of course ignores the fact that blacks and hispanics are also not getting the jab- because that would detract from his "fence sitter" facade. And he has nothing bad to say about the Left, or how he thinks they made this a culture war issue- he just criticizes the right.

This is what will eventually frustrate you about arguing with Mike. He is lying to your face, appearing to be reasonable and get you into a conversation when all he wants to do is get more people he can bag on the right with. It is nauseating.

when all he wants to do is get more people he can bag on the right with. It is nauseating.

Even if your portrayal of Mike is accurate, why is it any more nauseating to "bag on the right" than it is to "bag on the left"?

Why are we, at a libertarian site, supposed to heap nothing but scorn and enmity against one team, but give the other team a sympathetic hearing and the benefit of the doubt?

why is it any more nauseating to “bag on the right” than it is to “bag on the left”?

Who is saying Mike needs to heap scorn on anyone? I am calling him out for disingenuously posing as having a balanced view when he is in fact a standard lefty.

One can read these comments pretty quickly to understand who is a partisan shill, uninterested in anything but their echo chamber, versus the people interested in a good faith debate. Mike pretends to be the latter, as this thread shows. He pretends to be open minded and middle of the road when in fact he is just a shrill lefty.

Not only that, but every day he parachutes into the threads with lies.

That is Mike insisting that he “would never look to Rolling Stone” for news, after spreading their bogus ivermectin story only days earlier. Consider that: He didn’t apologize. He didn’t even try to ignore his mistake. He brazenly tried to dunk on Rolling Stone to make himself look like an arbiter of truth.

Who is saying Mike needs to heap scorn on anyone?

Have you seen the comments around here from the Team Red folks?

Either you believe Democrats are evil baby-eating monsters, or you are on the side of Team Blue. It is that black and white. Objecting to a ridiculous caricature of Team Blue is "deflecting in favor of the Left". That is the reality among the Team Red shills around here.

              1. JesseAz   4 years ago

And jeff throws in some strawmen to justify his leftism while declaring himself neutral. LOL.

You do nothing but shill for the left Jeff.

Well, regardless of the merits of Team Blue vs. Team Red, on this issue in particular:

The Right: You should probably get vaccinated but it's ultimately your choice; talk to your doctor.

The Left: Get vaccinated or we will destroy your ability to earn a living, see your loved ones, attend religious services, or otherwise interact in society!

              4. Overt   4 years ago

"Have you seen the comments around here from the Team Red folks?"

Pardon my French, but so fucking what?

You replied to me, not to JesseAZ or ML, etc. What do you want me to do about it? I'm not Jesse's keeper. If they want to be partisan, I'm not going to stop it- I in fact did protest last year before learning my lesson.

So I have shifted to dealing with people who are interested in a real conversation. Which is why Mike's behavior galls me so much- he pretends to want a conversation and then pulls a bait and switch.

                1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

I am simply presenting how things look from my point of view. From where I sit, one must either support every ridiculous right-wing caricature of "the left", otherwise, one is actively supporting the left. That is, if one does not believe and actively support and promote the idea that Democrats hate America and want to create death camps for conservatives, one might as well be an AOC devotee. That is the level of insanity around here. I'm not saying you are a part of it, you are not. It is just frustrating to be told over and over that I am some sort of "leftist" when I don't espouse any leftist ideology and what I mainly do is criticize the right. They are trapped in black/white thinking, tribal duopoly. They create far too much noise for this site.

                  1. Overt   4 years ago

"I am simply presenting how things look from my point of view. From where I sit, one must either support every ridiculous right-wing caricature of “the left”, otherwise, one is actively supporting the left."

Then look harder. I never said that anyone had to support anything.

Look at Mike's posts on this thread. Really look at them. He starts with a "yes both sides have issues" statement and then proceeds to only talk about the problems with the Right. He is trying to rope people into a "conversation" so that he can attack those people on the right.

"They create far too much noise for this site."

Yes there is too much noise around the world right now. Do you think you can be an agent of change?

I'll say right now, I see one cultural divide right now. It is the Elite vs the rest of us. And the elite knows that they can forever win that war by keeping team red and team blue at each others throats. Do you want to know why we are talking about a Vaccine mandate right now? Because the Elites wanted us to stop talking about how incompetently the government has handled Afghanistan (for 2 decades, not just Biden) and the Border (again for 2 decades).

To the extent that it is Leftist elites in charge right now (and Elites tend these days to be lefty anyway) you are going to hear me calling out Lefties quite a bit over the next year. Sorry.

You're not a libertarian jeff. You just claim you are to hide the fact that youre a far leftist. You even call yourself a libertarian socialist which just means leftist.

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

I have never called myself a "libertarian socialist". That is a lie that you invented.

If you think I'm wrong, then I expect you'll pull a quotation from your dossier on me that proves otherwise, right? Right? Oh wait you don't have a quotation from me making this claim in your little dossier because it doesn't exist.

And to you, "far leftist" only means "someone who doesn't believe in the idiotic right-wing caricature of the far left". It's just a puerile insult like "doodyhead". Not to be taken seriously.

              1. JesseAz   4 years ago

And now Jeff resorts into lying again.

You have defended yourself as both a libertarian socialist and a globalist libertarian. This is your problem, same with Mike. You simply lie about what you've said in the past.

                You're just a liar.

“far leftist” only means “someone who doesn’t believe in the idiotic right-wing caricature of the far left”.

No, it means you openly push support for the left non stop.

Put up or shut up. Present your alleged proof of this claim. If not then STFU. I'm not a libertarian socialist. I never claimed to be a libertarian socialist.

No, it means you openly push support for the left non stop.

criticism of the right =/= support for the left

That's the problem- 13 year olds are no longer qualified to do the job because .gov and rich white Karens have decided that babysitters now need to gave advanced qualifications, and day care programs need to be "educational." Day care workers need to be certified in all kinds of shit that's not really necessary to wipe boogers and make sure kids don't die. MAYBE child and inflant CPR and first aid is a good idea, but I give two shits if my kid's day care ladies are up on the newest fads in early childhood education.

The idea that a layperson could properly perform infant CPR is laughable. I did hear a story from an eight year-old recently about clearing her choking baby brother's obstructed airway, and that is about the limit of medical intervention I would want any daycare worker to attempt on my child.

Certification never prevented a child from falling off a swing and hitting their head. But thinking that they knew how to diagnose a concussion may have lead a daycare worker not to immediately call a parent or get the child to a doctor.

O'Rourke has been making calls to Democratic leaders across Texas to inform them that he is seriously considering taking on Gov. Greg Abbott

"Oh, and I'd like your advice about using the 'Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47' stuff again."

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Like I pointed out last year, Robert O' Rourke's career is a lot like his dad's--someone with no particular gifts who married into money and had a lifestyle subsidized by well-off relatives, and who ended up becoming a professional politician because he wasn't doing anything particularly productive with his life.

His only real skill seems to be acting like a college spastic despite pushing 50, which is why he's so popular with Texas Democrats.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Even calling him "Beto" is such a stupid enabling of his "how do you do, fellow Mexicans?" earnestness. The dude's a fucking potato-muncher, not a Latino.

I'm pretty sure the only reason he got a national profile is because he has a vague physical resemblance to the degenerate Kennedy clan.

You'd like to think he has no shot, but the way things have been going here lately....ehhhhh, who knows? The Cruz-O'Rourke fight shouldn't have been a fifth as close at it turned out (Cruz +2.5). Yeah, Cruz didn't really campaign.

Yes, the Governor's race is different. So are the times we live in. So is Texas

"Incarceration rates are down. Is that a sign of progress, or the pandemic?"

No and no. The reason incarceration rates have declined is because George Soros and other woke lefties financed election campaigns of many far left wing Democrat prosecutors (i.e. DAs and AGs), who have refused to do their jobs (i.e. prosecute criminals).

  15. Fist of Etiquette   4 years ago

Maybe it's a sign that all the prison industrial complex workers are getting fat unemployment checks.

That said, who cares if Conservatives were unlikely to get the vaccine. That didn't make it a culture war. What made it a culture war was when the Left started demanding that there was only one "right" choice. You either got vaccinated or you were wrong. That is what creates a culture war.

Had these the left just said, "you do you" it would have been as remarkable an issue as people who get botox or eat organic. No one would be screaming about it on Twitter.

What you continue to ignore is the left's mandates...masks, vaccines, vax passports, etc.

There's ten stages of genocide. We are getting very close to #7. Conservatives and libertarians recognize the signs. This should explain the resistance to the fucking left's mandates.

There’s ten stages of genocide. We are getting very close to #7.

This is part of the problem - the hysteria comparing a vaccine mandate to GENOCIDE. Are you fucking kidding me?

I don't favor a vaccine mandate, but I certainly don't think it is a type of genocide. You are interpreting their actions in the most histrionic and evil manner possible. That is not reasonable. Or maybe we should go back to describing what everything Trump did as "Nazi fascism" as reasonable intelligent discourse.

Here is the bottom line. There has never been this level of Team Red resistance to any other vaccine - polio, tetanus, MMR, etc.
Most of these are mandated in some form or fashion - for going to public school, etc. It was only anti-vaxxer nutbars like Jenny McCarthy and a bunch of fringe whackos who raised objections. But now, with this COVID vaccine, suddenly it has become this huge deal on the right. And ESPECIALLY coming from the team which has NEVER been even remotely consistently libertarian when it came to issues of bodily autonomy. From abortion, to the drug war, to mandatory drug testing of welfare recipients, to the surveillance state, to their perpetual skepticism and undermining of the Fourth Amendment. NOW we are expected to believe they have become a bunch of radical libertarians who reject all vaccine mandates on principle? I'm sorry I don't buy it.

                  1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

There has never been this level of Team Red resistance to any other vaccine – polio, tetanus, MMR, etc.

Who knew that so many minorities were Republican voters? Because we all know that when chemfat brings up Team Red #Resistance, what he really means is "blue collar whites that don't live in my blue-voting suburb."

                  2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

From abortion, to the drug war, to mandatory drug testing of welfare recipients, to the surveillance state, to their perpetual skepticism and undermining of the Fourth Amendment.

Other than abortion, there has been partisan agreement on every single issue you list there. Now, how about all the issues you left out: entitlements for health insurance and healthcare, health mandates (i.e., soda taxes), business mandates, employer mandates, and their perpetual skepticism and undermining of the First and Second Amendment?

You always try to both sides shit where one side is consistently much, much worse than the other. The people who were against lockdowns are now against mandates for what are being proven to be more akin to flu shots than a preventative vaccine. That is consistent. It is also much more libertarian.

The fact that the left and its lackeys are completely ignoring the much more effective natural immunity of those who have recovered from COVID tells me everything I need to know about their mandates.

                  3. Zeb   4 years ago

I really don't think that it's as much a team red thing as you think. Most republicans I know are vaccinated. Almost all of the people I know who are pretty strongly against getting vaccinated (for various reasons, not all anti-vax) are definitely not what anyone would call team red.
I'd say it's driven by lack of trust in media and other institutions. People who were already inclined to doubt those institutions two years ago have had whatever faith they may still have had destroyed under the present public health tyranny.

"Most of these are mandated in some form or fashion – for going to public school, etc."

Here is the bottom line: you are 100% wrong about this. Show me a public school in all but one or two states where you are "required" to have a vaccination, and I will point you to the simple form you sign to get out of it.

"But now, with this COVID vaccine, suddenly it has become this huge deal on the right."

In the first week of June, the liberals turned this into a culture war by sending a letter and mouthing at the highest levels that "Anti Racist Protests" were allowable despite COVID. That one week is when all the cultural divides were set in stone around COVID.

We went from 2.5 Months of general shaming of anyone who broke curfew- including folks on the right protesting lockdowns in places like Michigan- to HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people gathering in the street, cheered on by the same governors, health officials and pundits that had been doing the shaming mere weeks before.

If you don't understand how this turned COVID in general into a culture war issue, I don't know what to tell you. Yes, Conservatives then dug in to say that COVID was not as big a deal as the left felt- because as far as the right could tell, the Left didn't believe it was a big deal either, unless it was to shame people on the right.

Flash forward to this year, and the EXACT SAME fucking thing is happening. I have not seen you or really anyone on the left condemn the blacks and hispanics who are declining to vaccinate. It is constantly "well its mostly folk on the right!" When folks on the left are forced to talk about minority vaccination, they suddenly changed their language from "Anti-Vaxxer" to "Vaccination Hesitant".

When the left treats lock downs and vaccines as an opportunity to demonize political opponents while giving a pass to political allies, you get a culture war.

When folks on the left are forced to talk about minority vaccination, they suddenly changed their language from “Anti-Vaxxer” to “Vaccination Hesitant”.

What is hilarious is that it is the inherent racism in the Progressive agenda that creates what the rest of perceive as cognitive dissonance. The Progressive sincerely believes that blacks, natives, and anyone who speaks Spanish in the western hemisphere can be forgiven the transgression because they lack intelligence and education, being particularly susceptible to superstition and religious dogma.

              3. JesseAz   4 years ago

And now why don't you disparage the PoCs who remain the most unvaccinated Mike? What about PhDs who also are more unvaccinated than those who identify as conservative? Why do you ignore it?

              4. Claptrap   4 years ago

The right is willing to be live-and-let-live on this issue while the left is not, so the right is the obvious aggressor. Seems legit.

There's no one action that triggers a culture war involvement. That's not how these things work, and you know it. "Strong conservatives" have been consistent in their skepticism of the vaccine's necessity from the outset. It became a culture war issue after a year of anodyne PubHealth hectoring on the matter failed to move the needle.

Once cases began to rise in the south the nation was treated to a bevy of "WHYCOME STUPID HICKS NO GET SHOTZ?!" stories on a daily basis, implying that "strong conservatives" were the only possible problem there and causing a reaction among them in turn. It's bad persuasion, but for some reason the establishment is sticking with it. It's almost like they don't actually care.

Of course, nobody is forcing him to do anything, but that is completely immaterial. Everyone must either submit to masking and vaccines or avoid all human contact to be in harmony with the NAP.

"“Unpersuaded by more than 100,000 pandemic deaths in the United States, 45% of strong conservatives, four in 10 Republicans and nearly as many evangelical Christians say they’d be unlikely to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, even for free.”"

The poll that Mike points to was taken right at the time liberals were giving a pass to hundreds of thousands of people participated in the Floyd Protests around the country.

COnsider that. Mere weeks before, COVID was the most important issue in our lives. The left was solemnly insisting that if some blue collar worker in the suburbs or rural america had to lose his job, so be it. And then a few weeks later they were staring into that same camera and insisting that COVID restrictions weren't as important as people protesting and burning down buildings.

Yet Mike cannot, for the life of him, figure out why Conservatives might think that those same "authorities" are full of shit when they demand that COVID is so important that they need to lose their job if they won't stick a needle in their arms.

                What a fucking shock.

              6. Zeb   4 years ago

And how many of those people have already had it and therefore have no use for a vaccine? There's another thing that keeps being ignored. How many people have had it now? Probably at least 20% of the country, no?

    A new Cold War?

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10008085/AP-Interview-UN-chief-warns-China-US-avoid-new-Cold-War.html

    Hooray for defense spending!

    1. Lord of Strazele   4 years ago

China builds whatever the fuck they want and threatens the shit out of everyone but we're the assholes for building submarines. The idea that defending yourself is aggressive is propaganda.

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I think the current row is over sharing nuclear sub tech with Australia.

        1. Lord of Strazele   4 years ago

It's green tech. It's not a nuke. No one's invading China with a sub. China is already building a war machine. This is us defending ourselves.

          1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I think we're in agreement. Australia doesn't want nuclear weapons. We're giving them subs that can operate defensively and only need to surface when they run out of food. And yeah China's been waving its dick around.

But does that mean we need another Cold War? Perhaps the guy's point is that we should try to avoid another one. Spending shitloads of money on the military isn't an economic winner.

            1. Lord of Strazele   4 years ago

Predators are emboldened by weakness. We're the arsenal of democracy. At least we're selling the weapons instead of giving them away. Some Washington Examiner opinion dude suggested we should buy France's diesel subs and give them to Vietnam. Maybe we should?

              1. buckleup   4 years ago

Jeez whenever shitstain and screetch get talking the real crazy ass crap comes out.

              2. Overt   4 years ago

I draw the line here. If France and Vietnam want to collaborate, fine. We ought not be in the business of giving away weapons. We should be selling them.

                1. Chumby   4 years ago

Biden has a track record of giving away weapons.

        2. Overt   4 years ago

Then that should be even LESS objectionable shouldn't it? The US isn't attacking Russia. It isn't even building subs. It is just giving Australia the technology to defend itself.

They're talking about a new Cold War with China, not Putin. China has a much bigger dick. Well, probably not literally.

So, like any other prominent socialist leader of the last hundred years, António Guterres (secretary-general of the Socialist Party of Portugal 1992-2002, president of the Socialist International 2002-2005) is advising that the West build a relationship with a murderous totalitarian regime that flies a red flag rather than resist its ambitions.

And like any good foot soldier for socialism of the last hundred years, sarcasmic is suggesting we follow that advice with a vague invocation at the financial cost of resistance.

(Of course, sarcasmic will soon be along to deny being a socialist foot-soldier, instead claiming to merely be a useful idiot who unknowingly parroted the fossilized propaganda of a prominent socialist.)

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

So when a guy who calls himself sarcasmic makes an absurd statement like "Hooray for defense spending" in context of a hugely wasteful new Cold War, you take him at his word.

Arbitrary and strange rules on alcohol are nothing new. I'm more interested in how they got to 28% without distillation.

I thought natural fermentation maxed out well below that. Or have there been advances in yeast engineering?

    1. Overt   4 years ago

You can do this with constant replacement of yeast and a high sugar content. Many belgian beers have a good history of getting pretty high, and they have some really hearty yeast strains. That said, Now a days I wouldn't be shocked to find that some brewers are mixing in distilled spirits to cheat.

      1. JesseAz   4 years ago

There has been an ongoing competition the last decade to brew the highest proof beer with some of the major brew masters. Some of them selling a single bottle for upwards of $100. Prefer to drink and not chew my beer so generally don't go for any above 15%, but getting some crazy high ones out there.

    2. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

Possibly they used freezing. This is the German process for making eisbier, which has a higher alcohol percentage than other beers. The process is used in making some U.S. brands like Ice House.

The freezing point for alcohol is much lower than that of water, so freezing the water in the beer and picking the ice off the top means a higher concentration of alcohol is left.

    3. Claptrap   4 years ago

When I went on the brewery tour some years back, they specifically pointed to having a special, high-tolerance yeast.

Checking the website, they're sticking with that:

THE BREWERS UTILIZED SEVERAL YEAST STRAINS DURING FERMENTATION, INCLUDING ONE TYPICALLY RESERVED FOR CHAMPAGNE, AND A “NINJA YEAST,” CREATED FOR ITS ABILITY TO SURVIVE AND CONTINUE FERMENTING IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT HAS SUCH A HIGH ALCOHOL LEVEL.

In recent weeks, Mr. O'Rourke has been making calls to Democratic leaders across Texas to inform them that he is seriously considering taking on Gov. Greg Abbott...

He might want to wait for a few more blue state immigrants to take root before trying it.

    1. JesseAz   4 years ago

The problem is the blue immigrants are turning red in Texas. Only the white Californians are blue.

      1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Let's see whether these immigrants were pro-Trump, or pro-Republican first. As far as blue state newcomers voting Republican here, personally I've seen too many CA/IL/MD/NY license plated cars in front of houses with Biden/Harris or Beto signs (or have stickers on the cars), to give that much credence.

The ones I see are missionaries of blue states, not refugees from them.

        1. ducksalad   4 years ago

You have a good point, the big pro-Trump swing along the border was smaller for down-ballot Republicans.

But I'm pretty sure Beto O'Rourke himself isn't viable. Back in 2018 he was something new and exciting (at least for the easily excited). Now that he's fizzled multiple times the buzz is off. It's not clear he'd even win the Dem primary if he gets significant competition.

          1. JesseAz   4 years ago

            Here.

            https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/democrats-losing-texas-latinos-trump/

It isn't just trump voters. The hispanics are growing more and more into the GOP.

            1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Yeah, I thought you'd bring up that story. (And I cleverly deleted mentioning it in my earlier post.) I'm still not convinced.

I can buy Mexican/Tejano disgust for the increasingly depraved social policies of the Democratic Party, as well as wanting some control on the rise in violent crime. I can't see them throwing out stalwarts like Chuy Hinojosa, Henry Cuellar, or the Castros. (I guess Silvestre Reyes retired. Thought he'd never leave...) Quite a few new Hispanic-sounding names with '21 start dates in the GOP rolls though.

Immigration is---despite the Monthly story lalala'ing it away---still going to be a big deal. Those who're here, want Tio/Tia and Abuela here too, and don't look kindly at efforts to keep them out. (This emphatically does not apply to anyone who has gone through the US multi-decade legal immigration process. Those people hate line jumpers with a passion.) And immigration is one of those issue the GOP has been perceived to be harsher on than the Ds.

It read to me like another paean to Latinos as natural conservatives, which is both bullshit if we're discussing recent immigrants (Tejanos here since Spain are different) and an argument I expect the GOPe to make. So when Texas Monthly, who definitely aren't right-wing, start making it, I get suspicious.

In any event, that's the influx into South Texas. The blue state migrants aren't moving there, for the most part. They're going to Austin/DFW/Houston. And most aren't conservative. At least, IME, in Houston.

              1. JesseAz   4 years ago

My wife is second generation and her whole family was democrat as recently as 10 years ago. There are only 2 strong democrats left in her family. Most are tired of the paternalism and have actively switched their party registration. Anecdote, but it seems to be happening more and more.

                1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

That's fantastic, Jesse. I hope it's catching. Not that the GOP half of the Uniparty is that great, at least they don't have their gas pedal shoved to the floor.

              2. Overt   4 years ago

If you look back at previous elections, Bush on his second term took a rather large proportion of hispanic votes, and most especially in Texas. You'll note that the same election, one of his planks was immigration reform which was unsuccessful.

If the GOP were to offer a solution to the immigration mess that did not include full open borders but still provided some mechanism for support, they would probably go a long ways in capturing the hispanic vote for a long term. It worked for Bush, and it worked for Reagan before that.

The problem will be a solution that navigates multiple parties. There are nativists who want to protect their culture. There are laborers who want to keep salaries high by centrally controlling the labor supply. There are political strategists who are concerned about how this changes voting dynamics.

I think any solution will only please two out of the three. You could work out a guest worker program that allows cheap labor, but doesn't encourage people to bring families (importing culture) and doesn't get citizenship. Or you could find a route to citizenship that encourages assimilation, but you would still see demographic changes in voting.

It will be tricky either way, and I don't trust the GOP to be successful at anything mildly tricky.

      1. Lord of Strazele   4 years ago

I'm not talking registration fees. I'm saying straight up selling green cards for money to pay down the budget. It would be exactly the type of legislation permitted by reconciliation.

  28. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Your typical beer used to clock in around or under 5 percent ABV. But recent years have seen an explosion of craft beers—especially India pale ales—with 6, 7, or even 8 percent ABV, and many companies rolling out even higher-alcohol-content brews.

I used to make my own beer, and got pretty good at it. Looked into doing it professionally but the pay averages around $40K. Can't live on that. Looked into it more. Even visited some local breweries. Turns out the job is mostly cleaning. No wonder pays crap.

Anyway, like most homebrewers I naturally tried to make the strongest brew I could. Biggest bang for the time spent. It tasted like crap. My best brews were in the 4-5% range. Session ales and Eastern European lagers.

So I'll definitely pass on this one and recommend others do the same. Especially since the bad alcohols, the headache makers as in methyl and fusel oils, tend to be in higher proportions the longer the yeast works.

    1. GroundTruth   4 years ago

Turns out the job is mostly cleaning

Same thing with cidermaking. You may think the hardest part will be keeping the yellow jackets at bay while you run the press, but in fact it's cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Worse in fact with cider since it relies on multiple rackings to get fermentation to quit before the sugar is all gone. And then there are the bottles.....

But seriously, why all the focus on killer ABV? If one wants alcohol for a painkiller, there are plenty of options, all of which will be cheaper than anything you can produce yourself.

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Oh boy. Them hornets love the sweet stuff. Doesn't sound like fun.

Best batch of anything I ever made was a cider. I used local cider. And in Maine there's no shortage of that. Beefed up the specific gravity with some malt extract to get an expected ABV of 5%, and fermented with lager yeast. When all was done I added some potassium sorbate to stop the honey I added with it from starting a secondary fermentation. Force carbonated it in a corny keg.

        Holy fuck that was good.

        1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Know what? That's not true. The absolute best brew I ever made I used maple sap instead of water for the entire process. Mash and sparge. Made a brown ale. Had a wood-like flavor as if it had been aged in barrels. Sublime.

But like the honey cider, the ingredient cost would make it too expensive to sell as a commercial product.

          1. GroundTruth   4 years ago

Interesting idea to use sap rather than water for brewing. Cool that you got a woody flavor. I can't taste anything except sweet in raw sap, but my experience has all been with swamp maples - maybe different intensities from sugar maple?

But I'm one of the unlucky ones that can taste sorbate. Of course, since bitter is what hops brings in, why not?

I tried doing mead last year with quality farmstand honey, using apple "cider" (UV treated apple juice from the same place) to dilute it with rather than water. I figured the juice would bring in the nutrients at a low lever, and maybe cause it to stop early. Anyway, it was just wicked hot, like a bad Columbia river white wine; most of the fragrance of the honey was gone. I've got it bottled, and am hoping it will soften over time, but I'm not wasting money on honey for something like again without some more info.

(Headed way downeast later this week, hoping to come back with a car full of feral apples for pressing! Wahoo!!!)

            1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I never had much luck with mead. The sugar ferments out, leaving behind the flavor of whatever the bees visited. So when I made beer and beefed it up with commercial honey, all it did was make it taste like clover stems. And when I made mead with commercial honey it tasted like clover stems. Because the sweet fermented out. The cider was different. I halted fermentation with the potassium sorbate and the honey kept it's sweet. Tasted good.

Same idea with the maple sap. The yeast ate the sweet, and only the maple flavor was left.

              1. markm23   4 years ago

Perhaps mead just tastes bad. There is probably a reason that beer almost entirely replaced mead once barley became widely cultivated in northern Europe.

Nope. Against the rules. That would make it "fortified" like vermouth or madeira. Stuff that's best left for cooking.

Beers above 15% ABV are mostly undrinkable, and entirely novelty items. One of the few exceptions are icebocks, which start out as good beer but then get ice distilled. But a naturally high ABV means an extremely cloying and syrupy beer. That Sam Adams chooses to make their novelty beers with funky ingredients only adds to the taste abomination.

Sure, go buy one of these oddball beers, and display it in your collection. But by gawd don't drink it!

p.s. Truth in advertising means that I must admit I once made a 13% wee heavy scotch ale. It was primo. Won an award! But it was at the ragged edge of drinkability and rust remover. Yeasts and techniques to bump up the ethanol would only have given it more of those nasty higher alcohols and funky flavor notes.

Their government has oztracized itself from the citizenry.
        (ostrichcized was second place).

Why Is This Beer Banned in 15 States?

    Because your government hates you.

  41. Unicorn Abattoir   4 years ago

"The US [knew] that inside this area, inside the car, [were] children, why [did] they target innocent [people] in this area?"

These brave children gave their lives to prop up the narrative.

"In recent weeks, Mr. O'Rourke has been making calls to Democratic leaders across Texas to inform them that he is seriously considering taking on Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican who is up for re-election next year,"

Upon hearing this news, Democratic leadership to scrambled to find a candidate that could beat Beto in a primary.

    1. Dillinger   4 years ago

      ya dude. "Please no, Robby."

    2. DRM   4 years ago

Hmm? Why would they waste a decent candidate on a no-hope election?

So, Trumpists are challenging election results even in counties where Trump won bigly.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-won-these-counties-big-his-supporters-question-results-there-n1278653

Well I do have to give them some credit, evidently their skepticism isn't completely because they are mad Trump lost.

But, it does beg the question. What type of election security would be good enough? What procedures would they require in order to think that the election was at least 'secure enough'?

    1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

Your begged question has already been answered to you dozens of times here, you paid party shill.

What you're attempting to do is imply that nothing will ever satisfy "Trumpists" because you want to portray their beliefs as baseless. Just more bad faith from you as usual.

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

The Canadian who won't accept the results of an American election unless Trump wins is accusing someone else of arguing in bad faith?

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Too funny.

        1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

"You're Canadian so you can't question us"

Annnd sarcasmic apparently doesn't know what 'bad faith arguments' are either. Did you think it's the same thing as "changing" goalposts", sarcasmic?

I'm not sure if chemleft wants a literal retard to white knight for him.

    2. sarcasmic   4 years ago

They will only accept the results that they want. So I imagine cheating to their advantage is the only thing they'd consider to be fair.

A Chinese student studying in Canada shared just three posts on Twitter — using a fake name and location — critical of Xi Jinping and government corruption. He had two followers. And then the police started contacting him and his family.

Looks like Twitter is sharing info with the CCP again.

Beto taking on a guy in a wheelchair? Doesn't he know that under Identity Politics Rules, that makes him Literally Hitler?

Democratic politicians are exempt from Identity Politics rules

Wheels is a weathervaning piece of trash, whose saving is he's marginally better than John Cornyn. I think he'll beat O'Rourke soundly, but I don't know. After 11/2020, I don't trust that he will either.

Beto O'Rourke is back. "In recent weeks, Mr. O'Rourke has been making calls to Democratic leaders across Texas to inform them that he is seriously considering taking on Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican who is up for re-election next year," reports The New York Times.

Libertarianism if a gay Mexican with a craft beer in one hand and a joint in the other.

Gay is so early 2000s. It's an unvaccinated trans Guatemalan Dreamer with a mask and a hijab on.

...craft beer sold from a food truck...and a joint being smoked by a ferret....

  49. Roberta   4 years ago

How the heck can you make 28% ABV beer?!! That's like...port beer! It's gotta be fortified. If they're distilling mash and adding it back, is that beer or...brisky? Whale?

    1. Chumby   4 years ago

They add caramel in the brewing process.

  50. Utkonos   4 years ago

Wow…. 15 states ban it and California’s not on the list? The Cali-Ban are lager-lagging! (Don’t you just love word play involving the word “lager?” It’s just so campy!)

The end of every day is the perfect time to let your imagination run wild and declare yourself to that special someone. A simple goodnight message can bring a smile, but a very passionate and romantic phrase is even better!

Sam Adams Utopia is an instant DUI and you can honestly tell the police you only drank one beer.

  53. Burney   4 years ago

While I think 28% beer should be allowed, I also think that something that high must be labeled. You can drink and drive after 2 beers, but not 2 of those. Also, the high ABV beers like Belgium Tripels don't taste like beer. I don't think they are anything special.

  54. Satish   4 years ago

It is utter injustice baning a beer brand! Anyways you can substitute any beer with the wonder drink called as Kombucha I think the foreigner's governments are pretty lenient while baning any stuff.

  55. DarrenM   4 years ago

When I read the headline, I thought must be Democratic-run states banning Corona beer.
