School Board Won't Reverse Fourth-Grader's Suspension for BB Gun Incident During Virtual School
Ka’Mauri Harrison is accused of bringing a BB gun to school. But he never left his house.

In September, Louisiana's Jefferson Parish Public Schools suspended a 4th grader—Ka'Mauri Harrison—for six days because he allowed a BB gun to briefly appear on his screen during virtual Zoom school. On Friday, the school board declined to remove the suspension from his permanent record, according to local news.
They did change the six-day suspension to a three-day suspension plus three unexcused absences, which was entirely unacceptable to Harrison's father, who stormed out at the end of the lengthy meeting:
The Woodmere Elementary fourth-grader said he was moving the BB gun so his brother didn't trip on it when his teacher saw in during a virtual classroom session.
The Harrisons have argued their home is not an extension of Ka'Mauri's classroom. The school system has stood its ground and refused to change his record.
That happened even after a new law was passed -- and named in Ka'Mauri's honor -- to deal with similar situations.
"Are you aware you were suspended because you brought a BB gun to school?" Chelsea Cusimano, the Harrison family attorney, asked Ka'Mauri as he testified during the hearing.
"I didn't bring my BB gun to school," he answered.
School Board member Simeon Dickerson, a former teacher, asked Nyron Harrison, Ku'Mauri's father, to think of how his teacher felt seeing a gun on her computer screen.
"I know what a BB gun looks like. And you know what it resembles? A real gun. OK? It resembles a real gun," Dickerson said.
I wrote about this story in September, and it's as outrageous today as it was then. Bringing a fake gun to school is not at all the same thing as briefly and accidentally allowing a fake gun to be glimpsed on a computer screen.
During these very difficult and stressful times for parents and families, the last thing schools should be doing is inflexibly applying overly punitive rules. The pandemic is no excuse to broaden the public school system's zone of authority into people's homes.

School Board member Simeon Dickerson, a former teacher, asked Nyron Harrison, Ku'Mauri's father, to think of how his teacher felt seeing a gun on her computer screen.
Feelings are more important that common sense.
To be fair, feelings have always been the most important thing. And much "common sense" is based on feelings.
Wrong.
I don´t care about your feelings, and this whole thing lacks common sense.
Empowered by the opportunity to traumatize one of her students with official backing from the school? That would be my guess.
Even if it was a real gun, it shouldn't matter. He didn't threaten anyone and that is his home. None of which is the school's business or within their jurisdiction.
Red on white is so ugly, BtL.
How does she feel about them on her TV screen?
He's a big, strapping he.
I imagine this poor snowflake can't even watch nightly TV without a security blanket and a handy barf bucket. And forget the news!
>>when his teacher saw in during a virtual classroom session
when his teacher violated his rights to privacy.
And the family's 2A rights.
Bullets would fix this "tyrant" problem really quick. If they lived in my district, I would have already taken care of it.
This is a good opportunity for the kid to learn about virtual backgrounds.
Wouldn't have mattered. The boy was moving it to prevent his (little brother?) from tripping over it. Moving things pop forward in the virtual background. It doesn't matter whether the moving thing is you, your dog or the clock pendulum in the background - it will show "in front" of the virtual background.
a piece of blue masking tape over the screen cam woud fix everything. I keep one there all the time. rumours abound about strange entities activating my screen cam without my knowledge or permission.
Someone needs to take that sick teach and back her up against the wall, take her by the scruff, andTELL HER TO GROW UP. She cnnot possibly be harmed by some pixels on her cmputer screen. Good grief, the nightlu news often has far worse, how can she maintain seeing any of that? SHE is not this younb lad's Mommie. get over it, lady. YOU are not the Empress, with or without yur new clothes. (the thought of her with her "new clothes" is frightening........ )
The young man even went through the trouble to show up to this absolute sham of a hearing looking sharp as can be in that suit. Who cares about the teacher's feelings about a gun on her computer screen? She probably watches Netflix shows with more realistic looking guns on her computer screen all the time. What tripe.
Master Harrison at least should have worn a
CYO tie , ideally one that matches his pocket square!
What the fuck? People are allowed to have guns in their homes. How is that not the end of it?
> What the fuck?
This isn't a court of law. It's an arm of government doing whatever they arbitrarily feel like. That is all. This is the system people demanded, this is the system people got.
Yup. These are the same assholes that coined the term "Zero Tolerance Policy" while simultaneously forcing kids to pretend that Kwaanza was a real holiday.
People are the worst.
White female people are the worstest.
School boards are the worst people.
Nicole's not here, man.
People... what a bunch of bastards!
School boards and the publik skools they oversee do have to follow due process and respect the Bill of Rights, don't they?
Why is everybody laughing?
School board members are elected officials in most places. That makes them essentially untouchable until the next election. Sucks. They should be hounded every time they leave their house.
Yeah, but courts of law are still in play here. I wonder if Second Amendment Foundation would be interested in some win-win press?
"How is that not the end of it?"
The schools argue that the kids home is an extension of the classroom and yet they pay no fucking rent or even send the janitor by once a week.
So, now be sure not to invite cops or teachers into your home. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Code enforcement, IRS agents, health department...
That's the answer then. Every parent needs to start sending the schoolboard an invoice for use of their livingrooms and sue when they don't pay, and that would force the schools to admit that they don't actually use your home as a classroom really quick.
IT IS NOT EVEN A GUN!!! This piece of thin steel and plastic is not a "firearm" under any laws in the US.
Assholes will have their way when there is nothing to stop them.
Thank gawd it wasn't a Nerf Pistol!!!
I almost wonder if the BB gun isn't intentional. If it were an actual gun in a locked gun cabinet, I think more interested/broadly sensible parties would be more vocal about the effectively identical infraction.
"I know what a BB gun looks like. And you know what it resembles? A real gun. OK? It resembles a real gun," Dickerson said.
For this reason, the district's history classes will not cover the years of 1775-1783, 1812-1815, 1861-1865...
Except for the slavery stuff.
1619 is the only year that matters.
Did you expect that morons who wear masks while meeting online would not also be afraid of seeing a weapon online? Those mysterious interweb tubes can carry all kinds of stuff right into your kitchen.
Guess what you’re getting more of next year. And the subsequent decade.
Yeah this.
^This
Just excise the progressives like a cancerous tumor. That IS what they are.
How did they establish that the incident occurred "in school"?
As far as these morons are concerned, anyplace seen on screen during a virtual class is an extension of the physical classroom.
Good point. Pull up a Google Earth image of America, run through the number of assaults, rapes, murders, robberies, drunk driving, traffic accidents, etc., etc., etc. that have taken place. Narrow it down to a few select major cities. Then narrow it down to the kid's particular neighborhood. Then put the screenshot in question up. Get them all on record saying that the BB gun on this kid's wall is more important than all the rapes, assaults, and homicides that are captured on screen every day.
So does this mean sex offenders aren't allowed to live within 1000ft of kid doing classes on Zoom?
Shut up you'll give them ideas.
So any parent who keeps real guns in the home is ipso facto guilty of violating the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 (as amended post-Lopez to include fig-leaf invocation of interstate commerce)? I wouldn't put it past Biden/Harris's DOJ to bring prosecutions on that basis.
It seems that this is the case. Expect police surveillance to school zoom sessions.
No, cuz they'd lose and that precedent would eviscerate their fake authority. So they'll make sure that never goes to a high court.
Public school is for teachers, not for students.
They're a jobs program, like everything else government does.
what ever happened to common sense? what made anyone think this was OK to do to that kid in the first place?
Public sector labor unions.
Raging leftists protected by unions enabled by corrupt Democrats.
ya know, people like you
Common sense was written by Thomas Paine, an old white male who may have owned slaves, and thusly cannot be used in the modern educational establishment.
Paine was a adamant abolitionist, I think.
"...he was moving the BB gun so his brother didn't trip on it when his teacher saw in during a virtual classroom session"
My God, what bravery! Such a heroine. Especially given that that BB gun looked like a real gun. Just think on how that made her feel. Nonetheless, she took her own life in her very hands and reported it [virtually, I'm sure].
That teacher must have never watched Saving Private Ryan if s/he felt the slightest bit of fear or apprehension upon seeing a gun on a computer monitor.
In fact, I'm not certain someone of such delicate constitution has the temperament necessary to educate public school age children.
Those little bastards are vicious.
That is why they need bb guns
Has the teacher ever watched TV or a movie and seen a gun on a screen? Idiots!
I'm not sure the teacher is intellectually capable of teaching history and civics. How can you learn about any war without seeing a picture of a gun? How can you learn about the constitution without knowing what a gun is?
Well, I guess they don't have time to teach those subjects when they have higher priorities like teaching "anitracism"...and yet it's the black kid getting screwed by the institution, LOL.
Is it too insensitive to call alerts about disturbing content trigger warnings anymore? After all, g-u-n-s have triggers.
Surely there is some organization that will sue pro bono or on a contingency. That's the way this stuff gets curtailed.
Can't wait to see the teacher get busted when a dildo accidentally makes the screen during a class. Guaranteed sex offender status in - wait, what? Oh unions, right. Never mind, move along, nothing to see here.
Permanent record...who has ever looked at such a thing? It's a joke.
School Board member Simeon Dickerson, a former teacher, asked Nyron Harrison, Ku'Mauri's father, to think of how his teacher felt seeing a gun on her computer screen.
Excuse me, how did she feel? Why do we have to speculate about this? Can't we just ask her.
Then we can explore her feelings. If she felt threatened, she should explain why. Was she afraid she was going to be harmed through the zoom meeting? Was she afraid he was going to harm her other students through the zoom meeting?
Or perhaps she was concerned for the student. We wouldn't want the student to face the very real consequences that might occur if there's a weapon in their house. We're all about what's in the child's best interest. Aren't we?
Look, I read on the Fair Measures labor law newsletter, that some people feel offended by seeing a crucifix on a fellow employee's wall during a zoom meeting.
This complaint about hostile environment is bound to drift down to distance learning school sessions.
"School Board member Simeon Dickerson, a former teacher, asked Nyron Harrison, Ku’Mauri’s father, to think of how his teacher felt seeing a gun on her computer screen."
Perhaps they should have asked the Harrisons, father and son, about their feelings. They might have gotten an earful.
Come on, kids, if that delinquent had fired that BB gun through the intertubes he might have put someone's eye out. Didn't any of you listen to your mother?
She knew best, you know.
Do they have a duly enacted, written policy that specifies children may not have BB guns within line of sight of a virtual teacher?
But anyway. Look. Minority kids getting screwed by the school system. Blame Trump.
Most of the sculptures dating from the Historical period depict human figures and silhouettes or figures that embody animals, being used, as stated above, during ceremonies or rituals to attract the forces of nature. Even if most of the art critics consider that the prehistoric sculpture represented a means of artistic expression, at that time the respective works were not realized for aesthetic purpose.
In addition to the figurines I mentioned earlier, the category of sculpture also includes masks made for healers and wizards; they were worn during rituals to ward off evil spirits.

So wish I had kids in virtual school. There would be real guns hanging on the wall behind the kid. And my lawyer's phone number posted right underneath them.
Surely this will be included in the figures of lopsided disciplinary treatment of black students.
Ready to homeschool yet?
Tape over the camera on your computer; tell 'em it's broke.
Nah, just tape over it, and if they complain, say "not without a warrant, motherfucker."

As a father of boys, I doubt it was "moved so his brother didn't trip".
normally, the opposite would be occuring. I suspect that there is more to this store, and perhaps 'brandishing' may have been a thing.
That's not support such anti-gun lunacy from the school district, but rather to point out Reason's constant low-information propagandizing for their topic of choice, instead of actually delving into the core issues. Is a 'personal interest sob story' really the right way to go here Robby?
Grabbed the piece to keep his brother from using it without permission would be perfectly cromulent.
Me: Put that back!
Little brother: Why? You aren't using it!
Me: `Cause it's mine, and I say so.
LB: Moooooommmmmm!!!! Kevin won't share!!!
"low-information propagandizing"
There's definitely some of that going on in your post at least.
"The pandemic is no excuse to broaden the public school system's zone of authority into people's homes."
Any excuse will be used to give the schools, and by extension the State, more authority over individuals.
Ah, but the pandemic *is* an excuse to extend State authority to the home— so the State apparently believes, given the uniformly political and authoritarian response to the pandemic.
Exactly
The pandemic is
no excusethe perfect excuse to broaden the public school system's zone of authority into people's homes.I fixed it for you Robby.
What about the shotgun in daddy's closet?
Why won't you kids stay away from Daddy's Secret Closet Of Forbidden Mysteries ?!?
Enough time locked in the house with the kids, he may be eating that soon.
"Bringing a fake gun to school is not at all the same thing as briefly and accidentally allowing a fake gun to be glimpsed on a computer screen."
Nor is it the same as bringing a real gun to school. Watch out, next they'll be banning fake sugar, fake eyelashes, fake tits...
I dispute the premise that a bb gun is a fake gun. It's a real gun that shoots bb's. A fake gun is a replica that doesn't shoot anything at all.
I will also note that the kid had every legal right to have possession of the bb gun in his room.
Fuck the school board kangaroo court, sue every member of the board for violating the kid's civil rights under color of authority.

Let me just add that Simeon Dickerson is a whiny little bitch, and that anyone who voted for him should be ashamed of themselves.

You know what Dickerson Harrison don't resemble? Real adults. What it disaster that people like this are teaching our children, much less supervising an entire district's teaching of our children.
When I was in elementary school our cloakroom looked like an arsenal. The big game at recess was Combat. We would pick sides and then spend the whole time shooting at each other. We had plastic M-16's, tommy guns, pistols, grenades and other weapons of minor destruction.
Not to mention the fact that our house is our house and it is not the controlled environment of a school. There is nothing illegal about a BB gun. If they don't want to see whats in our homes, then they should readmit the children to the schools or require them to have virtual backgrounds. If I still lived in Louisiana (I do not any longer) I would be writing the governor about it. Thats ridiculous.
Just one more reason for vouchers and school choice.
I appreciate the school board's careful and nuanced approach to this.
School administrators are the most extreme combination of stupid and petty that one can find. this is a fact.
Eliminate public school. Problem solved.
Welcome to the United Shithole of America.
Ok, so I made an account just because of the misconceptions in the comments. I live down here and have firsthand experience teaching here.
1. Simeon Dickerson is a black man, not a white woman. He has always has had aspersions of political office. This probably plays into the whole kerfuffle. The teacher is also black, since the comments seem so intent on blaming white women for some reason.
2. Woodmere Elementary is a public charter school, not a public school. It's different. Students get to choose which school they attend in Jefferson and Orleans Parish, it has nothing to do with what district they live in. There is little communication between schools. This student will be able to change schools easily and readily.
3. In Jefferson and Orleans Parishes, we have extremely high rates of gun violence, especially among young black males. The reason that the schools are so "no tolerance," whether it's effective or correct or not, is because guns being brought to school is fairly commonplace. It's so commonplace, it doesn't make news here. We usually had a gun (not BB guns) taken from the middle school where I taught about once a month. We witnessed students that we loved being murdered much more than your average school teacher, so I understand the teacher having feelings about it (though it doesn't justify the actions taken by the administration).
4. If you work for a charter, you are not allowed to join a teacher's union. Because Louisiana is a will-to-work state, if they catch you joining a union, you will be let go. Most of the time, charters overhire staff at the beginning of the year so they can get those sweet government dollars and then cut staff as soon as the check comes in to balance their budget, so they are looking for a reason to fire people.
All this being said, this child's rights were violated and it's stupid and wrong, but that doesn't mean we can wholesale blame it on all the convenient bogeymen, because it's more complicated than that. Children in these areas are subjected to walking through metal detectors every day, they get shot waiting for the bus, their test scores are abysmal because the good charters are highly competitive and oftentimes have requirements that their parents can't meet. Their rights are being violated constantly.
I hope this family sues the shit out of the charter and wins, but we need to be honest and accurate with our assessments if there is to be any change.
Hey Soave - a BB gun is not a fake gun, it is a real gun and kids should learn to handle them. They can learn to respect guns at an early age. A BB gun can be dangerous if not handled properly. You can put someone's eye out with a BB, or kill a small bird with it.
I had a BB gun at the age of 9, graduated to a shotgun at 10.
Kids have rights, too, including rights in their own home. Schools should only be allowed to enter homes virtually if they agree to respect the rights of the occupants.
Look, yesterday I read on the labor law newsletter from Fair Measures, that some people feel offended by seeing a crucifix or a political poster on a fellow employee’s wall during a zoom meeting.
