Reason's latest video, "Libertarian Star Wars Parody," is racking up yuuuge numbers, especially at our Facebook page.

Created by Reason TV's Meredith Bragg and Austin Bragg, and Andrew Heaton (who also stars), it's a great example of one of the major things we do through our investigative reporting, commentary, and analysis. We're trying to be your voice in public debates over politics, culture, and ideas, making sure that the principled libertarian case for "Free Minds and Free Markets" is getting the best hearing it can.

What? Aren't we talking about a fricking hilarious (IMHO) video? Yes, yes, we are.

Take it away, BuzzPo:

This video is a perfect example of how to do a couple of things I've argued the conservative side of the political spectrum really needs to start doing if they want to get things in this country turned around:  engage the culture and take advantage of the numerous new platforms available to people who want to get their message out there.  By hooking into Star Wars, they tied their ideas in with a big cultural phenomenon, and by putting it out on Youtube, they exploited the power of viral videos.  It also comes across just self-deprecating enough that people who might not like libertarianism can still laugh at it and not feel like somebody is trying to preach to them.

So all in all, great job Reason.

(More plaudits in that vein here.

Yes: engage the culture you want to change.

In fact, even more than that: create the culture you want to see.

For decades, Reason has been celebrating every advance, big and small, that has let us all create and consume the culture that we want, not simply what powerful political, corporate, and cultural gatekeepers what us to watch, read, or hear. Indeed, Reason itself was founded in 1968 by a Boston University student named Lanny Friedlander who took advantage of new breakthroughs in printing and design technology that lowered prices and made "small" magazines and alt-papers easier than ever to produce.

In 1999, we documented and reveled in the "culture boom" even as many on the right and left were damning the end of "a common culture" and the "end of standards." Instead, we thought it was a good thing that cable TV channels were exploding, that video rental stores had created mini-cinematheques in every town in America, and the little-understood Internet and World Wide Web were revolutionizing every aspect of culture. All of this ended up causing the figurative death of the test pattern—that symbol of cultural dead space, when nothing was happening—and gave us infinite choices when it came to music, movie, film, writing, and other forms of creative expression.

The potential for exit—to go elsewhere—heavily conditions the terms of exchange between producers and consumers; in effect, it forces the producer to provide better terms for the consumer and hence disperses power throughout a system. One reflection of this is the relatively recent and increasingly widespread practice of discounting books. Another is the way that producers must adapt to survive changing tastes. Consider a culture industry giant such as Disney, which rebounded from near-bankruptcy in the late 1970s and early '80s. Disney had to start once again making films that audiences actually wanted to see (out with The Black Hole and Tron; in with The Little Mermaid and The Lion King). But it has also flourished by expanding the range of material it is willing to finance. Hence, through its subsidiary Miramax, it has seen fit to help produce and release such quintessentially non-Disney films as Priest, Kids, and Pulp Fiction.

…more important, an increase in the possible sites for cultural production and consumption does allow people to go elsewhere. The effective breakdown of the state church in England did not cause the differences among sects, some of which were so deeply held that dissenters shipped out to the New World. Rather, it created a society in which differences could be given voice and debated. Today, it has become increasingly easy for individuals to "make" their own culture, either through actual production or increasingly differentiated patterns of consumption.

As the incredible production standards of our Star Wars video attest, it's only gotten easier for folks with relatively little money or contacts to create work that is indistinguishable from stuff coming out high-end studios. The culture boom was only getting started back when we first named it, and the sky is the limit in using creative ways to get our libertarian messages out into the world in all sorts of new, different, and interesting ways.

Back in 2010, for instance, we were able to perfectly mimic the look and feel of UPS' famous "whiteboard" commercials. Where UPS was using the motif to sell their services, we used it to teach a quick, fact-rich lesson about how government regulations vastly complicate not just the cost of doing business but how you can do business:

And then there's three-dozen-plus videos we've done over the years with Remy, the musical satirist who never met a politician he liked or a song he couldn't improve.

If you care about creating a world in which libertarian ideals of maximal freedom and minimal coercion carry the day, think about supporting Reason, the nation's only journalistic venture that's dedicated to "Free Minds and Free Markets." Every day of every year, we're out here making the case for shrinking the size, scope, and spending of government and giving all of us more power to live our lives peacefully and however we see fit.

Sometimes we do that by calling attention to shoddy work by outfits such as The New York Times and forcing them to cop to their mistakes. Sometimes we do it by appearing on shows such as HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher and mixing it up with folks such as Rachel Maddow. Hell, sometimes we do it be helping to create, as Matt Welch did, the first daily libertarian talk show on cable news.

But we always do it at Reason magazine, Reason TV, and Reason.com where we produce thousands of pieces a year that engage the culture—popular culture, political culture, business culture—and show the power of libertarian ideas to make the world anew.

We can't do that without your help.

We are on Day Five of Reason's annual Webathon. We're asking readers to provide $250,000 in tax-deductible donations between now and December 8, so that we can keep bringing you the very best libertarian news, analysis and commentary.

I couldn't even untangle that much. Then again, I'm still not sure what the "Alt Right" really is.

I'll read Taki's mag on occasion, but i suspect the people who toss the "cuck" term around think of that as 'wishy-washy' Cosmoservativism or something. Not Alt Enough.

The best i can tell they're something like the folks i used to see at VAdare back in the day. or those people eventually evolved into whatever they are now.

            Don't be a victim

If you feel you are in immediate danger from knife crime there are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself:
? Move away from the situation towards a public place (shop, house, restaurant etc.) as quickly as possible.
? Make as much noise as you can.
? Instead of carrying a knife, carry a personal alarm.
            ? Don't fight back.

Does "victim" mean something different over there?

I'm all for retreating when confronted with danger. But the continuum there should eventually have:

              Poke them in the eyes
              Grab their groin
              Fight to the death

It's only logical that once your flight instinct isn't a deterrent, the fight instinct HAS TO kick in or you are going to die This piece is basically telling people to die.

Sadly, I don't see a real-life future to match the movie future.

                  It's a triple negative, actually.

I noticed that, and technically, yes it is. But, imo, "No one can't" has become so idiomatic that it's overly prescriptivist to object to it. Which is how I feel about the double negative, as well, actually. With the notable exception of modern standard German, the Germanic languages were always one in which negative concord served to intensify negation. I see no reason to knock the square peg of English into the round hole of Latin, or even predicate logic. When I want my meaning to be completely clear and without ambiguity, I speak Lojban.

I have fond memories of DU as a lad when I did this program that they host annually. This was 20 years ago and my first exposure to university type courses with what in retrospect was surprisingly heavy in variety of compressed-time hard science classes. The campus layout was attractive at the time. Haven't been back to Denver in over a decade.

Ha - I did that one summer, too! (IR & creative writing, in my case.) Wonderful experience all the way around - except for the elevator in the high-rise dorm being broken part of the time. And I believe that was the first time I flew anywhere alone, which was pretty damned exciting for a sixth-grader.

I was a local/commuter living off campus; my parents drove me there. To date I've never had the pleasure of dorm living. Biology and anatomy one year, robotics and chemistry the other.

..its just that the quality of it is so artless and gross. Going after Trump et al is to be expected.

However, pissing on the graves of the dead in an attempt to create the impression of moral equivalence...

      Not sure.
First, since they are 'developing nations', they're on the receiving end of the free shit, so 'going all-in' may just be a stated preference for that free shit.
Aside from that, most of them are tin-pot dictatorships of one sort or another, and 'climate change' gives the dictator one more excuse to continue dictating; toss that asshole out, and the public might not support the freebies to his cronies in the solar-panel scam. Can't have that.

No new stories posted? It is 7:30 here, good grief.

  25. Lee G   9 years ago

I got one for you. It might be behind a paywall to you so here'e the summary.

Congress should add people on the government's no-fly list to the list of people barred by federal law from buying firearms, Sen. Tim Kaine said Friday.

This week's mass shooting at a California social services center, in which 14 people died and 21 were injured, shows a need to do something to halt the violence, Kaine said in an interview after speaking to the Virginia Chamber of Commerce's annual economic summit in Williamsburg.

Expanding the list of people barred from having or buying guns to include those on the no-fly list is an obvious step, he said.

Currently, federal law says convicted felons, anyone under indictment for a felony, fugitives from justice, anyone who has been hospitalized for a mental illness and anyone convicted of stalking are barred from owning firearms.

    1. Lee G   9 years ago

      @Suthenboy

      1. Suthenboy   9 years ago

I am assuming that cocksucker is from N Va.

He is just signaling to his voters. That will never fly. You cannot deny someone their fundamental rights without due process. Putting someone on the no-fly list is not due process. I would even argue that the no-fly list as it exists is unconstitutional, but certainly denying those people the ability to purchase firearms would be shot down in court.

What these fucknuts never think of is the precedent that would set; the ability to deny someone other rights based on arbitrary choices by government officials.

It is idiocy. No surprise that our esteemed POTUS endorses it.

        1. Tulpa (LAOL-OH)   9 years ago

Born in St. Paul, MN; he was mayor of Richmond before becoming governor.

    2. Rhywun   9 years ago

Yes, this demand has been loudly trumpeted by the left in the last week. It's basically an end-run around the 2nd amendment - once they have managed to get all wrong-thinkful people on the no-fly list they have basically achieved their desire to disarm America.

      1. Suthenboy   9 years ago

Once again they have chosen a losing strategy. Getting all of the wrong-thinkful people on the no-fly list would create economic havoc. This would fail long before that.

      2. Ms. Eleanor Lavish   9 years ago

My understanding is 700,000 people are currently on the no fly list. So, 700,000 potential 'terrorists'? The left is attempting to expand the definition of terrorist to include 'domestic' terrorism or non-islamist terrorism. So, denying nearly a million Americans due process under the guise of fighting terrorism. Creeping authoritarianism. Another example of the the ends justifying the means - anyone on the left who supports this can officially hand in their "liberal" card. There's nothing liberal about denying basic constitutional rights based upon arbitrary and opaque government standards all in the name of national security.

        1. Tulpa (LAOL-OH)   9 years ago

That's the terror watch list (which is now over a million people). The no-fly list has "only" about 50K names.

To be fair, both lists are mostly non-US citizens, who wouldn't be eligible to own guns here anyway.

      3. Tulpa (LAOL-OH)   9 years ago

It's a winning strategy politically among low information voters, whose attention span is almost as long as a bumper sticker. The Dems can claim that the GOP wants terrorists to have guns. That most people on the no-fly list (and even greater proportion on the "watch list") are not terrorists, and there is nothing to stop the executive from putting anybody they want on the list, is way too subtle an argument to counteract that simple talking point.

    3. Tulpa (LAOL-OH)   9 years ago

The Dems were originally calling for anyone on the much larger "terror watch list" to be prohibited from owning guns. At least they've walked it back a little bit to the much smaller no-fly list.

But remember when the left thought that all these lists were a terrible, 1984-ish affront to freedom back during the Bush administration? Now they apparently think they're underused.

I have donated in every one of these webathons in the past, but will not be donating in this one, or any future ones unless Reason cleans up its act.

It's not because I disagree with the magazine's prevailing opinions on issues like open borders, forcing gay marriage on the states, the necessity of praising offensive speech, or police-involved issues. I value a diversity of opinion as the lifeblood of a healthy political debate. What I do not value is:

    1. Playground-level namecalling directed at people who disagree with your opinions,
    2. Dishonest editing of quoted material, and misrepresentation of the content of linked material (especially in police-involved issues),
    3. An artificial "evenhandedness" that results in ripping into the left and right equally, despite the right being far closer ideologically to libertarianism. This brainless "pox on both their houses" approach effectively helps the left by downplaying the right's stronger position on liberty.

I'm referring to the actions of article and blog post writers, not the commentariat. Reason can't control the commenters they attract. Clean your stables of the Krayewskis and Tucilles and offer Gillespie a retirement package, and you'll have my support again. Until then, I'll direct my limited budget for charitable contributions toward an organization that's actually serious about advancing liberty, not just complaining about the statism that they did nothing to stop when there was a chance (a la Reason in 2012).

Cute, but I guarantee I'm not the only one. This is the first webathon where they're going to fall short (it looks like WAY short) of their goal. The market is speaking.

You have a point. The thing is, you're engaged in massive pot-kettling. You also think it's Reasons obligation to indulge in your delusions about President Romney. Even when you're right you're still wrong.

          1. Tulpa (LAOL-OH)   9 years ago

No, I don't. Romney was not a libertarian by any means, and it's fine for libertarians to criticize him on policy differences. What's not fine is equating him with Obama on health care (as Suderman did in like a dozen articles during the election season) and criticizing him equally with Obama, when Obama was far, far worse from a liberty perspective. They're doing the same thing with Rand Paul this election season, nitpicking him to death so they can say they're independent because they criticize him as much as they criticize Hillary.

            1. Cytotoxic   9 years ago

"when Obama was far, far worse from a liberty perspective. "

Again, that's your delusion. Not Reason's job to affirm it.

"They're doing the same thing with Rand Paul this election season, nitpicking him to death"

Some of Reason's criticism is silly but Rand's 'death' is not by Reason's hand.

From the obnoxious sock puppet king. That's just too rich.

      1. Tulpa (LAOL-OH)   9 years ago

I did what I did because I had to -- and continued to make rational and civil arguments. Which is more than I can say for the folks who only know how to insult (and often insult hiding behind their own sockpuppets).

        1. Cytotoxic   9 years ago

HA HAH HAHAHA Oh ride that cross Tulpa! Your martyr complex has almost blotted out the sun!

"continued to make rational and civil arguments."

          Maybe in an alternate universe.

" not just complaining about the statism that they did nothing to stop when there was a chance (a la Reason in 2012)."

HAHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

"the right being far closer ideologically to libertarianism. "

That's what I thought until Trump became republican Hugo Chavez. It should be clear this is probably not the case.

OK, AP admits that CA has very strong guns laws and they didn't do diddly WRT San Berdo:
"SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? The deadly shooting in San Bernardino happened in a state with some of the nation's toughest gun laws: California bars assault weapons, blocks the sale of large-capacity magazines and requires universal background checks for all gun purchases."

But I guess either sarcasm or a requirement for 'fairness' requires them to run an asinine statement not 2 paragraphs later:
"Strong gun laws do prevent gun deaths. Not every law can prevent every gun death," said Allison Anderman, a staff attorney with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in San Francisco. "They work most of the time."

Looks like someone didn't get the "OMG 1 gazillion gun deaths in the last week!!!!, DO SOMETHING!!1!" memo

      1. Rhywun   9 years ago

Or the "there is no substantive difference in homicide rates between states that have strong vs weak gun control" memo.

      "most of the time".

This reminds me of the time that somebody linked an article here that contained the phrase "with a few notable exceptions,". It rightfully turned into and HnR meme.

I heard this a while back and it may actually be true:
When the post office began deliveries to the boonies, they got censorious regarding addresses and many, many places got re-named 'Twin Peaks' pretty quickly.
