Reason's latest video, "Libertarian Star Wars Parody," is racking up yuuuge numbers, especially at our Facebook page.
Created by Reason TV's Meredith Bragg and Austin Bragg, and Andrew Heaton (who also stars), it's a great example of one of the major things we do through our investigative reporting, commentary, and analysis. We're trying to be your voice in public debates over politics, culture, and ideas, making sure that the principled libertarian case for "Free Minds and Free Markets" is getting the best hearing it can.
What? Aren't we talking about a fricking hilarious (IMHO) video? Yes, yes, we are.
Take it away, BuzzPo:
This video is a perfect example of how to do a couple of things I've argued the conservative side of the political spectrum really needs to start doing if they want to get things in this country turned around: engage the culture and take advantage of the numerous new platforms available to people who want to get their message out there. By hooking into Star Wars, they tied their ideas in with a big cultural phenomenon, and by putting it out on Youtube, they exploited the power of viral videos. It also comes across just self-deprecating enough that people who might not like libertarianism can still laugh at it and not feel like somebody is trying to preach to them.
So all in all, great job Reason.
(More plaudits in that vein here.
Yes: engage the culture you want to change.
In fact, even more than that: create the culture you want to see.
For decades, Reason has been celebrating every advance, big and small, that has let us all create and consume the culture that we want, not simply what powerful political, corporate, and cultural gatekeepers what us to watch, read, or hear. Indeed, Reason itself was founded in 1968 by a Boston University student named Lanny Friedlander who took advantage of new breakthroughs in printing and design technology that lowered prices and made "small" magazines and alt-papers easier than ever to produce.
In 1999, we documented and reveled in the "culture boom" even as many on the right and left were damning the end of "a common culture" and the "end of standards." Instead, we thought it was a good thing that cable TV channels were exploding, that video rental stores had created mini-cinematheques in every town in America, and the little-understood Internet and World Wide Web were revolutionizing every aspect of culture. All of this ended up causing the figurative death of the test pattern—that symbol of cultural dead space, when nothing was happening—and gave us infinite choices when it came to music, movie, film, writing, and other forms of creative expression.
The potential for exit—to go elsewhere—heavily conditions the terms of exchange between producers and consumers; in effect, it forces the producer to provide better terms for the consumer and hence disperses power throughout a system. One reflection of this is the relatively recent and increasingly widespread practice of discounting books. Another is the way that producers must adapt to survive changing tastes. Consider a culture industry giant such as Disney, which rebounded from near-bankruptcy in the late 1970s and early '80s. Disney had to start once again making films that audiences actually wanted to see (out with The Black Hole and Tron; in with The Little Mermaid and The Lion King). But it has also flourished by expanding the range of material it is willing to finance. Hence, through its subsidiary Miramax, it has seen fit to help produce and release such quintessentially non-Disney films as Priest, Kids, and Pulp Fiction.
…more important, an increase in the possible sites for cultural production and consumption does allow people to go elsewhere. The effective breakdown of the state church in England did not cause the differences among sects, some of which were so deeply held that dissenters shipped out to the New World. Rather, it created a society in which differences could be given voice and debated. Today, it has become increasingly easy for individuals to "make" their own culture, either through actual production or increasingly differentiated patterns of consumption.
As the incredible production standards of our Star Wars video attest, it's only gotten easier for folks with relatively little money or contacts to create work that is indistinguishable from stuff coming out high-end studios. The culture boom was only getting started back when we first named it, and the sky is the limit in using creative ways to get our libertarian messages out into the world in all sorts of new, different, and interesting ways.
Back in 2010, for instance, we were able to perfectly mimic the look and feel of UPS' famous "whiteboard" commercials. Where UPS was using the motif to sell their services, we used it to teach a quick, fact-rich lesson about how government regulations vastly complicate not just the cost of doing business but how you can do business:
And then there's three-dozen-plus videos we've done over the years with Remy, the musical satirist who never met a politician he liked or a song he couldn't improve.
If you care about creating a world in which libertarian ideals of maximal freedom and minimal coercion carry the day, think about supporting Reason, the nation's only journalistic venture that's dedicated to "Free Minds and Free Markets." Every day of every year, we're out here making the case for shrinking the size, scope, and spending of government and giving all of us more power to live our lives peacefully and however we see fit.
Sometimes we do that by calling attention to shoddy work by outfits such as The New York Times and forcing them to cop to their mistakes. Sometimes we do it by appearing on shows such as HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher and mixing it up with folks such as Rachel Maddow. Hell, sometimes we do it be helping to create, as Matt Welch did, the first daily libertarian talk show on cable news.
But we always do it at Reason magazine, Reason TV, and Reason.com where we produce thousands of pieces a year that engage the culture—popular culture, political culture, business culture—and show the power of libertarian ideas to make the world anew.
We can't do that without your help.

Meh. These guys are more fun.
Recruiting folks to uncuck America with Little Mermaid parody videos?
I'm not trying to sugarcoat things, but Leni Riefenstahl's rotational velocity is presently not zero.
I am dead yet? Is this hell?
What was that and why
A mixture of unfocused anti-establishment sentiment, racism, and autism.
I couldn't even untangle that much. Then again, I'm still not sure what the "Alt Right" really is.
I'll read Taki's mag on occasion, but i suspect the people who toss the "cuck" term around think of that as 'wishy-washy' Cosmoservativism or something. Not Alt Enough.
The best i can tell they're something like the folks i used to see at VAdare back in the day. or those people eventually evolved into whatever they are now.
I shudder to think what the Vdare people evolve into.
PapayaSF?
Alt Right = white creeps who think that America's problems stem from too many black people, Mexicans, Muslims, and possibly homos. Thinly veiled white race nationalists.
That's my best 'fast and dirty' effort at summarizing it.
These are the cretins that think Pat Buchanan is the best president we never had and Trump is the best we'll never have.
I wanna dump something real nasty into the ocean, right now, because I hate communists and New Yorker subscribers.
OT: A 'MACHETE-WIELDING' man has slashed a man's throat at a station in London as he shouted "this is for Syria", witnesses claim.
We need more gun control.
These things are gonna keep happening until the UK enacts comprehensive machete control.
Well, they've apparently made a start.
Ban belt grinders!

Does the state's sword of Damocles fit in there?
Does "victim" mean something different over there?
"Don't fight back"
Hmmmmm. So let them stab you and lay down and die? I don't believe they'll always be an England.
Maybe. There appears to be an epidemic in Devon:

I'm all for retreating when confronted with danger. But the continuum there should eventually have:
Poke them in the eyes
Grab their groin
Fight to the death
It's only logical that once your flight instinct isn't a deterrent, the fight instinct HAS TO kick in or you are going to die This piece is basically telling people to die.

Grabbing the groin is your answer for everything.
Most things.
Puerto Rican food is my answer to some.
Next up...pointy sticks.
Pointed stick? Oh, oh, oh! We want to learn how to defend ourselves against pointed sticks, do we? Getting all high and mighty, eh? Well I'll tell you something my lad. When you're walking home tonight and some homicidal maniac comes after you with a bunch of loganberries, don't come crying to me!
Now, the passion fruit.
It's a moral outrage.
A country in which a single murder was a sensation only 50 years ago.
Goddamn fuckin' idiots took a giant shit on the country their grandfathers busted their asses and sacrificed their lives to build.
And a little more than a century and a half ago, a single attempted robbery (and widespread newspaper coverage) sparked the nationwide Garotting Panic of 1842.
Using a machete to slit someone's throat is kind of overkill. Machetes aren't even supposed to be sharp.
Commence eminent domain!!!!
THERE IS LITERALLY NOTHING IN THAT GILLESPIE VIDEO THAT ISN'T TRIGGERING. Also, I don't think he's actually writing on that whiteboard.
So, is Epi accounted for?
Alas, the man in the video is not him.
"I seldom think twice of a Dream but last night I had one of so singular a nature that it has amused my mind today with various conjectures. I was riding in my Coach, where I know not, but at all once I perceived flying in the Air a number of large black [cannon] Balls of the size of a 24 pounder."

engage the culture you want to change.
I guess, if you like most of that culture and embrace it, then sure, push for change to make it even better. Otherwise, what fucking business is it of yours?
In fact, even more than that: create the culture you want to see.
That's more like it. It's not as if culture is a zero-sum game or a physically scare resource.
If you like your culture, you can keep your culture.

I'm guessing they took a shortcut.
I guess I *narrowed my gaze*
I engaged the culture somewhat this evening by going and seeing the final installment of The Hunger Games. A much better libertarian ending than V For Vendetta. I just couldn't help seeing some parallels between the two presidents in the movie and the two presidents we've recently seen here in real life. Sadly, I don't see a real-life future to match the movie future.
One way or another I ended up seeing every one of those damn things in theatre, and none of them were worth seeing in theatre.
Maybe if you went to a theater instead of whatever the fuck a theatre is it would have been a better experience.

When I was a kid milk was delivered to our door in glass bottles and the bottles had a beautiful foil cap.

I can't trust the advice of a man who drinks pumpkin spice latte. Your taste barometer is hopelessly broken.
That's just madness. No one can't not love the pumpkin spice latte. I could go on for hours about it!
There is no actual pumpkin and/or spice in a pumpkin spice latte, just anti-freeze and windex and sugar.

For use of a double negative, of course.
That's the least of his problems.
It's a triple negative, actually. As a matter of principle, I refuse to even attempt to decipher triple negatives.
Yeah I definitely botched that one.
I noticed that, and technically, yes it is. But, imo, "No one can't" has become so idiomatic that it's overly prescriptivist to object to it. Which is how I feel about the double negative, as well, actually. With the notable exception of modern standard German, the Germanic languages were always one in which negative concord served to intensify negation. I see no reason to knock the square peg of English into the round hole of Latin, or even predicate logic. When I want my meaning to be completely clear and without ambiguity, I speak Lojban.
No one can't not love the pumpkin spice latte.
How about Sara Lee?
*head explodes*
Who?
none of them were worth seeing in theatre
When people complain about movies being 2hrs long, I'm pretty sure they really mean "I don't enjoy going to the theater".
No, they mean movies need to cut the goddamn fat and stop pretending they are LoTR when they are not. See 'Lockout' for a movie that did just that.
I'll admit to that. I hate the movie theater with a passion. I go maybe once or twice, and that's just because my wife wants to.
I'd much rather watch a movie at home, where I can pause it to go take a piss or grab a beer.

I didn't see the last movie yet, but read all the books (yeah, you got a problem with that?). The ending is very libertarian.

"The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on Tuesday released a statement affirming its support for the US to continue resettling Syrian refugees fleeing the Middle East....
""USCIRF also calls on the United States to prioritize the resettlement of Syrian refugees based on their vulnerability. Throughout the region, Christians and members of some other religious minority communities have been targeted by ISIL for persecution ? and in some cases genocide ? because of their faith," he continued.
""At the same time, we recognize that ISIL has also targeted both Shia and Sunni Muslims who have resisted their violent ideology. In these instances, religion, as an important factor in determining vulnerability, may legitimately be taken into account in the prioritization process.""

According to NBC news the killers used high-capacity magazine clips.
Which killers? *Checks US arm sales to UAE*
The San Bernardino duo.
Sorry, I get confused. People who want BG checks and other gun control measures certainly don't want them applied to Govts like UAE or Saudia Arabia.

BTW. I went to UCD for a couple years. Denver is awesome.
My cousin went to law school there. Quality of lawyer TBD.
UCD or DU?
My bad. DU.
So confusing
I have fond memories of DU as a lad when I did this program that they host annually. This was 20 years ago and my first exposure to university type courses with what in retrospect was surprisingly heavy in variety of compressed-time hard science classes. The campus layout was attractive at the time. Haven't been back to Denver in over a decade.
Ha - I did that one summer, too! (IR & creative writing, in my case.) Wonderful experience all the way around - except for the elevator in the high-rise dorm being broken part of the time. And I believe that was the first time I flew anywhere alone, which was pretty damned exciting for a sixth-grader.
I was a local/commuter living off campus; my parents drove me there. To date I've never had the pleasure of dorm living. Biology and anatomy one year, robotics and chemistry the other.
I don't feel cultured. Tardy, maybe.

The CNN orgasms over the removal of guns from the American citizenry but I can't fucking understand why they don't hold this same goddamn violent recoil for barber shop razors... Cuz this thick fuck just got riddled over a goddamn razor. Razors clearly cost the motherfucking government time and bullets. PRAISE the holy CNN's.
American cops are worthless. Earlier link showed British cops capturing a man wielding a machete alive, but the American pants shitting cowards can't handle a guy with a straight razor.
British cops don't have guns.
Except the ones that do.
Well most of them don't.

The tweet: "San Bernardino victim just as hateful as his two killers"

They've all crash and burned?
Before reading this post, please invest in a pair of Depends, because shit is about to get real.
"Barbara Streisand" has 16 letters, "Woody Allen" has 10 letters, and "San Bernadino" has 12 letters.
Taken together with "9" and "11", this gives us the integer sequence "9, 10, 11, 12, 16", which is part of integer sequence A063987: Triangle in which n-th row gives quadratic residues modulo the n-th prime .

"[The San Bernardino incident is] just another tragic reminder that here in America, it's way too easy for dangerous people to get their hands on a gun," the President said Saturday.
Nice to see the President finally advocate for dangerous people control.
So Muslim government employees?
Also the Brits have done such a good job keeping guns out of the hands of the IRA.
I thought it was 14? Oh, I see what they're doing there.
I said it earlier but it bears repeating. This newspaper has become the most disgusting media outlet I have ever witnessed.
I might add that I have read other stuff from this writer over many years and it is obvious that she's following orders from above to help make the paper as offensive as possible. She wouldn't have written an article like this 10 or 15 years ago.
They are utterly appalling, but thankfully they are not above useless parody, shaming and juvenile insults, to which I think* we should all aspire to accomplish.
*I speak on behalf of everyone, so get to it.
I like it. I want this shit associated with gun control.
What are they doing there?
I read it. Now I see. What a POS.
I seriously thought the cover-story they ran on Thursday would be the stupidest thing written about the attacks.
Its not that i blame highly partisan rags for trying to twist every story, no matter how irrelevant, into some attack on its ideological opponents...
..its just that the quality of it is so artless and gross. Going after Trump et al is to be expected.
However, pissing on the graves of the dead in an attempt to create the impression of moral equivalence...
...or THIS piece of shit 'chart' that i still can't believe they ran on the cover....
is just setting a new-bar for desperate shit-throwing. It seems like the left's instinctive reaction is, "This Thing Hurts Us Politically", ergo = Attack everything like a cornered rabid weasel, pissing and shitting and screaming.
Even after they transparently cherrypicked the years on that, it still does the opposite of what they intended, which is just flat out stupid.
It tells me that 1 percent of the American population is responsible for 50 percent of the attacks. WHOOPS
There is no way that all but a few of those 'non-Islamic extremist attacks' are remotely extremist as opposed to mentally ill.
you missed the threads where we broke down their fake data on "non-islamic extremism'. Short explanation = every 'hate crime' is re-interpreted as "political extremism". Everything from Gay-Bashing to Lynching gets lumped together (even though 80%+ committed by 1-off crazies) and compared against 'organized, ideological islamic terror' and pretended that there's some equal-level of fatality.
Wow, what a total bitch. Last name fits.
Wow, so brave, so principled. Don't use the killer's name, but do use the name of the victim as you charge him as a hateful bigot, who is not alive to defend himself. Super classy.
Gosh it's like they're two peas in a pod! They should have been BFFs.
After starting to read the article and the following articles I had to go back and check the URL to make sure I wasn't reading some kind of parody site.

"So many African nations are going all-in on combating "climate change". These are countries that have been slowly dragging themselves out of the muck of poverty and now they are going to straight up kneecap themselves."
Not sure.
First, since they are 'developing nations', they're on the receiving end of the free shit, so 'going all-in' may just be a stated preference for that free shit.
Aside from that, most of them are tin-pot dictatorships of one sort or another, and 'climate change' gives the dictator one more excuse to continue dictating; toss that asshole out, and the public might not support the freebies to his cronies in the solar-panel scam. Can't have that.
Yeah, I'm guessing there is one person in each country who will be benefiting from these policies. I.e. same as it ever was.
So many African nations *say* they are going all-in on the AGW band-wagon. -FTFY
The image of 'the wife' is now getting distribution. She's no looker by any means, but that's pretty much irrelevant.
Wife and I were in London last year, nice hotel, but quite a few women were wondering around with their heads wrapped (yes, it was a VERY nice London hotel). I wanted to yell: 'Take the fucking rag off your head!', but wife mentioned that might be a criminal action in Brit-land.
I guess I should feel bad about that, but, Hey, bitch! Take that fucking rag off your head!
Now I feel better.
"but that's pretty much irrelevant."
I would argue that a man with a hot wife is far less likely to go on a killing spree.
Unless she's withholding the goods, then chances swing the other way.
Hot wife prolly not interested in rug-pilot fantasies; not likely holding out for additional ammo.
Yeah, but then you'd kill her, not the health inspectors.
"I would argue that a man with a hot wife is far less likely to go on a killing spree."
Judging by what seems to be the best info, the guy traveled from OC to SA based on an on-line dating service to meet and I guess screw that gal (since the have a kid).

And this guy flew from OC, the home of So Cal blondes, to pick up that rag head, ignoring what 90% of the world sees as attractive.
I'm saying he was already pissed at maybe not scoring with those So Cal blondes and really wanting some brain-dead who wouldn't show an ankle in public and would shut up and put out.
That's my world, son, and I love to swim in it.

Yes.
I run into that when I go shopping here in St. Louis. Probably see half a dozen women in full fledged burkhas. And this isn't just at the Global market, but Wal Mart and normal supermarkets.

I got one for you. It might be behind a paywall to you so here'e the summary.
@Suthenboy
I am assuming that cocksucker is from N Va.
He is just signaling to his voters. That will never fly. You cannot deny someone their fundamental rights without due process. Putting someone on the no-fly list is not due process. I would even argue that the no-fly list as it exists is unconstitutional, but certainly denying those people the ability to purchase firearms would be shot down in court.
What these fucknuts never think of is the precedent that would set; the ability to deny someone other rights based on arbitrary choices by government officials.
It is idiocy. No surprise that our esteemed POTUS endorses it.
Born in St. Paul, MN; he was mayor of Richmond before becoming governor.
Yes, this demand has been loudly trumpeted by the left in the last week. It's basically an end-run around the 2nd amendment - once they have managed to get all wrong-thinkful people on the no-fly list they have basically achieved their desire to disarm America.
Once again they have chosen a losing strategy. Getting all of the wrong-thinkful people on the no-fly list would create economic havoc. This would fail long before that.
My understanding is 700,000 people are currently on the no fly list. So, 700,000 potential 'terrorists'? The left is attempting to expand the definition of terrorist to include 'domestic' terrorism or non-islamist terrorism. So, denying nearly a million Americans due process under the guise of fighting terrorism. Creeping authoritarianism. Another example of the the ends justifying the means - anyone on the left who supports this can officially hand in their "liberal" card. There's nothing liberal about denying basic constitutional rights based upon arbitrary and opaque government standards all in the name of national security.
That's the terror watch list (which is now over a million people). The no-fly list has "only" about 50K names.
To be fair, both lists are mostly non-US citizens, who wouldn't be eligible to own guns here anyway.
It's a winning strategy politically among low information voters, whose attention span is almost as long as a bumper sticker. The Dems can claim that the GOP wants terrorists to have guns. That most people on the no-fly list (and even greater proportion on the "watch list") are not terrorists, and there is nothing to stop the executive from putting anybody they want on the list, is way too subtle an argument to counteract that simple talking point.
The Dems were originally calling for anyone on the much larger "terror watch list" to be prohibited from owning guns. At least they've walked it back a little bit to the much smaller no-fly list.
But remember when the left thought that all these lists were a terrible, 1984-ish affront to freedom back during the Bush administration? Now they apparently think they're underused.

We can thank the booger-eating idiots on campuses that think their feelings mean something for this.
The judge's ruling should read like what my grandfather told me when I was about 7 years old: Your feelings? Put your feelings in one hand and shit in the other and see which one weighs more.
Ruling? This should be laughed out of court before a judge ever see it.
I have donated in every one of these webathons in the past, but will not be donating in this one, or any future ones unless Reason cleans up its act.
It's not because I disagree with the magazine's prevailing opinions on issues like open borders, forcing gay marriage on the states, the necessity of praising offensive speech, or police-involved issues. I value a diversity of opinion as the lifeblood of a healthy political debate. What I do not value is:
1. Playground-level namecalling directed at people who disagree with your opinions,
2. Dishonest editing of quoted material, and misrepresentation of the content of linked material (especially in police-involved issues),
3. An artificial "evenhandedness" that results in ripping into the left and right equally, despite the right being far closer ideologically to libertarianism. This brainless "pox on both their houses" approach effectively helps the left by downplaying the right's stronger position on liberty.
I'm referring to the actions of article and blog post writers, not the commentariat. Reason can't control the commenters they attract. Clean your stables of the Krayewskis and Tucilles and offer Gillespie a retirement package, and you'll have my support again. Until then, I'll direct my limited budget for charitable contributions toward an organization that's actually serious about advancing liberty, not just complaining about the statism that they did nothing to stop when there was a chance (a la Reason in 2012).
Ha!

Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
I didn't say I was leaving the site. My commenting contributions will continue, if not the other kinds.
Sorry to hear that.
Fuck off.
Ha!
False flag
"I'm whiny little cunt Tulpa and I approve this message."
Cute, but I guarantee I'm not the only one. This is the first webathon where they're going to fall short (it looks like WAY short) of their goal. The market is speaking.
You have a point. The thing is, you're engaged in massive pot-kettling. You also think it's Reasons obligation to indulge in your delusions about President Romney. Even when you're right you're still wrong.
No, I don't. Romney was not a libertarian by any means, and it's fine for libertarians to criticize him on policy differences. What's not fine is equating him with Obama on health care (as Suderman did in like a dozen articles during the election season) and criticizing him equally with Obama, when Obama was far, far worse from a liberty perspective. They're doing the same thing with Rand Paul this election season, nitpicking him to death so they can say they're independent because they criticize him as much as they criticize Hillary.
"when Obama was far, far worse from a liberty perspective. "
Again, that's your delusion. Not Reason's job to affirm it.
"They're doing the same thing with Rand Paul this election season, nitpicking him to death"
Some of Reason's criticism is silly but Rand's 'death' is not by Reason's hand.
"Playground level name calling"
From the obnoxious sock puppet king. That's just too rich.
I did what I did because I had to -- and continued to make rational and civil arguments. Which is more than I can say for the folks who only know how to insult (and often insult hiding behind their own sockpuppets).
HA HAH HAHAHA Oh ride that cross Tulpa! Your martyr complex has almost blotted out the sun!
"continued to make rational and civil arguments."
Maybe in an alternate universe.
" not just complaining about the statism that they did nothing to stop when there was a chance (a la Reason in 2012)."
HAHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
"the right being far closer ideologically to libertarianism. "
That's what I thought until Trump became republican Hugo Chavez. It should be clear this is probably not the case.
OK, AP admits that CA has very strong guns laws and they didn't do diddly WRT San Berdo:
"SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? The deadly shooting in San Bernardino happened in a state with some of the nation's toughest gun laws: California bars assault weapons, blocks the sale of large-capacity magazines and requires universal background checks for all gun purchases."
But I guess either sarcasm or a requirement for 'fairness' requires them to run an asinine statement not 2 paragraphs later:
"Strong gun laws do prevent gun deaths. Not every law can prevent every gun death," said Allison Anderman, a staff attorney with the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence in San Francisco. "They work most of the time."

"They work most of the time."
Looks like someone didn't get the "OMG 1 gazillion gun deaths in the last week!!!!, DO SOMETHING!!1!" memo
Or the "there is no substantive difference in homicide rates between states that have strong vs weak gun control" memo.
"most of the time".
This reminds me of the time that somebody linked an article here that contained the phrase "with a few notable exceptions,". It rightfully turned into and HnR meme.
From the very first time man has looked to the horizon, he looked at a mountain and it reminded him of titties.
*had looked
It's nice to see Wikipedia covering the important things.
I heard this a while back and it may actually be true:
When the post office began deliveries to the boonies, they got censorious regarding addresses and many, many places got re-named 'Twin Peaks' pretty quickly.
What's are the indigenous words for booty shaped hill?
They forgot "the Bubbles" of Acadia National Park, ME
Those are so fake
