Tonight on The Independents: Radley Balko on Ferguson, Obama's War Powers, the Pope Blesses Bombing, a Mother Endorses Cannabis, More 'Enemies of Freedom,' Robot Butlers, and Paunchy Men Who Call Michelle Obama Overweight
Because libertarians are notoriously silent when it comes to criminal justice issues, The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, with re-airs three hours later) will for the third consecutive night talk about the ongoing fiasco in Ferguson, Missouri, this time with the libertarian Washington Post writer Radley Balko, whose groundbreaking work on criminal justice has not only inspired an entire generation of libertarians, but who also won a "Journalist of the Year" award in 2011 for work he did on the topic here at Reason. We'll do our best to catch up.
Party Panelists Guy Benson (Townhall political editor) and Richard Fowler ("Progressive Messaging Expert and all around good guy") will talk about the Pope's endorsement of U.S. airstrikes in Iraq, President Barack Obama's flexible relationship with the War Powers Act, a mom being kicked out of a pizzeria for changing her baby's diaper, and our new robot-butler overlords. Then comes the latest installment of "Enemies of Freedom." Previously:
Rachael Garner, mother of a toddler who she says had her life saved by cannabis, will describe her experiences with the medical establishment. And then Kennedy will respond to critics of her appearance earlier this week alongside Fox psychiatric analyst Keith Ablow, who drew derisive snorts among the lady co-hosts of Outnumbered by saying that Michelle Obama "needs to drop a few" pounds.
As ever, follow The Independents on Facebook at facebook.com/IndependentsFBN, follow on Twitter @ independentsFBN, and click on this page for more video of past segments.

Speaking of Ferguson, this is what's happening there right now.
I didn't post this, because libertarians have been silent on Ferguson.
What?
I think it made a stop at the memory hole.
So.. Nothing?
Bulletproof-Balko-Wednesday should be a regular feature.
No B.Suits this week to parse Iraq 3.0? I am disappoint.
Also, Guy Benson needs to ... I don't know, do like a decade of heavy drinking or something to add a little gravitas. He looks like a teenager running for class president.
YESSSSSS, BAAAAALLLLLLKKKKOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
What about the costs of police abuse for the abusers themselves? And their families?
As a court-sanctioned police abuse counsellor, I see examples every day of people who would never have come to me voluntarily if they weren't forced to by the courts and law enforcement. Nobody seeks counselling for something they enjoy doing and feel good about, even if it's putrefying the brain fluids of a perp every time they indulge. You talk about 'freedom' but what kind of freedom is that, where you don't want to do what's necessary to live your life without shooting a civilian? Sometimes you have to force people to become free.
I like this incarnation
That's a Tulpatron 2000, right? I mean, I thought the real Tulpa (if there is a real Tulpa) was some sort of investment guru who lived in his mom's basement for the free irony.
I thought he was a math professor or something...
Nice. I like.
It took me a bit to notice. Not sure whether that says more about Tulpa or me.
Forcing people to be free? Like by working?
And then Kennedy will respond to critics of her appearance-
Hipster glasses? Exposed arms? Pale skin?
WHO DARES SPEAK ILL!?!
....
...
wait, she's not pissed about the 'banana-dress' remark....?
(should have gone with the bumblebee @!(*#()@#)
Earrings. Huge...earrings...
I don't mind her pale skin. Just don't wear green. I mean blech.
I like her pale skin, and hipster glasses. She looks great for how old she is (43ish?)
I would

Someone needs to tell the dude =
"Progressive Messaging Expert and all around good guy"
These things are actually mutually exclusive
Typical progressive 'have your cake and eat it too (and someone else is paying for the cake)'-ism.
Well, since everyone knows the "mutually exclusive" part, he just had to pat his back his own self.
Hope he's not getting any callouses!
So when the politicians piss on our legs this is the guy who comes around to tell us it's raining?
You know who else employed a messaging expert?
healthcare.gov?
O/T: I don't know what ads you are seeing, but it looks like Chuck Norris has made his way into the Star Wars: TOR game.
Star Wars: TOR? Is that like a MMORPG for people too nerdy for WoW?
I guess so. I played it for a while (not on this computer), but tired of it. Never went looking for stuff afterwards, so not sure why I'm seeing ads for it.
Today in ass-kissing:

That video is too short. 8:12 is not enough to cover the derp contained within the vastness of Stephenopolous' feminine hair.
The space contained within the manly hair of Warren is empty, so 8:12 is too long.

It would seem that exposing Lizzy's claims to Indian heritage is causing a Trail of Tears among the left.
We didn't already use that one, did we?
Ehh, possibly. Still, I say we keep using it 'til we're red in the face.
I don't know about "dropping a few pounds", but Ms. Obama could sure stand a couple less licks from the ugly stick.
Sorry for noticing.
I know, the regular media blather about her beauty and style have been bizarre. She's actually rather angry and unpleasant looking.
The Daisy ad makes a comeback:

Iran is going to Nuke the US...
....because 'jihad'?
sigh. Meanwhile, we seem to be bombing *sunni* jihadists, and Iran is totally like "Sweet, Bro! High Five!" BFF.
Who the hell is even selling this 'iran, the existential threat'-line of horseshit anymore? It was old in 2003
ACLJ
...
Pat Robertson?
That soundtrack makes it like a mushroom cloud is the coolest thing ever!
Iran is led by crazy people. You should not underestimate them.
Iran being led by crazy people doesn't make the ad not ridiculous.
I think it's a bit overheated, but not really ridiculous.
Because it wasn't offensive enough the first time
That is the laziest xenophobic scaremongering ever
they couldn't even come up with a new freaking propaganda image. And the ostensible 'enemy'? they wear turbans, and go 'derkaderka' and stuff, and provide all sorts of free video footage of horrible shit... what, that's not actually useful?
....but nooooooo, these retards need to recycle cold-war footage. That's how freaking lazy they are.
Im guessing part of it is that the 'existential threat' bit is actually to *israel*... and they know that if they were more honest about that, most people would shrug and go, "their problem dude".

Nice pro-fracking ad.

Weapons grade crazy.
"Guys, if your woman is a totalitarian scumbag like Samantha Allen, get the hell away from her. "Political correctness" was an idea developed in communist China, so whatever she looks like on the outside, on the inside, she's a potentially genocidal freak who looks like this."
Or, how about: "Guys, Samantha Allen cut her own cock off to get where she is. do you really want to get involved with anyone who's willing to take her advice?"?
And where exactly is that?
liberal internet maniac that made $50 to write a crazy clickbait blog post?
Well, if you're going to cut off your own cock, might as well reach for the stars.
To become 'human clickbait', where he/she/it can now post endless 'dating / advice' columns and with each installment gin up a firestorm of prog applause and socon vituperation.
its how things work on the internet. Everything is powered by 'outrage'.
Well, in the broad bigger sense, she's online advising women to stay away from from men based on the his value of certain rights protected by the Constitution. Basically, certain rights are icky, so those guys can't be trusted.
In a more specific sense--her fellowship at the Kinsey Institute and her freelance writing gigs. At least, I think they're freelance gigs.
One girl I dated in Chicago asked me what I had done that day. I said I had been at the gun club. She said "ooh, scary". I said "the 2nd amendment made all the other ones possible". She stopped talking to me after that.
You may go to hell. I will go to Texas.
Go to hell, it's less humid.
Girlfriend is in TX right now. She just sent me a pic of a frog which literally died crossing the sidewalk.
Ah, not here. North Texas has been a parched wasteland for 5 years. And yet we still have a water park.
I would rather live in a scorched wasteland as a free man than suffer another moment in Chicago.
Guys, if the woman uses the phrase "social justice," be very afraid. Pol Pot used the same term!!
So I'm thinking about buying a 328i beamer.. probably around the 2011 vintage. I've always loved the 3 series but brand new prices are crazy and I'm not big on the current design.
Anyone drive a 2011 bmw 328 here? Any advice for buying used?
I drive a minivan.
+1 Dodge Grand Caravan
When I was a kid, we watched Stars Wars episode IV from a VHS my dad taped off TV complete with commercials. The commercial for a brown 87 Dodge Caravan segued into a shot of the Jawa Sand Crawler.
My Dad bought one a few years after I was born. We referred to the Caravan as the Sand Crawler in my family.
That's some Americana, there.
+1 "Utini!"
Why drive a beemer when you could have this fine machine:
http://platedlizard.blogspot.c.....brity.html
If it comes with the decals consider it sold!
I've got a 318ti that I like. Just pay the bucks to a local mechanic to check it out ahead of time, if you are buying from a private party or somebody else who doesn't offer some sort of warranty.
I had a dream ISIS retreated to Antarctica. Then, they declared a jihad on penguins.
"Look, nobody enjoys shooting penguins, but it you have to shoot penguins, well, you might as well enjoy it."
+1 Nature's Pocket
This man is over-gasped!
Epi, I don't know what it is about that line, but I say it more than pretty much any other Futurama line I know.
A bit shooty, are you?
I have $50 on the Penguins
ISIS vs. Sidney Crysby. Can't they both lose?
I really wish I was a lucid dreamer. Then I could be a war correspondent from the astral plane.
There are methods and even devices to induce it.
I immediately thought of this scene. All they would need is an evil mastermind.
linky no worky
Let us see if I can do this right on the second try.
Anyone like country (like 70s outlaw country, not pop-country)? This whole album is great, but this is the most appealing song, probably.
When I hear "outlaw country", this is what pops in my head:

Prediction: Dreamcatchers.
A red shirt and a picnic blanket shirt? Embarrassing.
Guy Benson and Richard Fowler are the cutest couple ever.

The pope knows where all those souls go, so...
Does Fox live feed work?
I'm watching it now
Why are we talking about this without Michael Weiss anywhere to be seen?
Couldn't they have brought on the Fox priest for the Pope segment?

Yeah, we should have elected Candidate Obama instead of the guy we got. Maybe?
Wow, Mr. Prog thinks there's inherent Presidential power to go to war because gridlock in Congress!
Affix your flashlight to your grill so that you can season your steaks with moths.
I'm presuming that's in reference to something from one of the commercials during the break. Anyway, that's hilarious.
I was hoping the word picture spoke for itself.
Actually, my grill has a small light on the lid, which was a novelty when I bought it. I've used twice, I think. Managed to keep the moths away, fortunately.
Behold: proggy arguments against the gold standard

Balko!
Nice tie, Radley.
IN CASE YOU COULDN'T TELL THAT'S SARCASM.
What troubles me about that photo is that the civilian needs a haircut.
The police are civilians!
You need to take another look at that picture.
What? It was like 5 dudes and a Rasta playing paintball.
...everything looks like a nail.
Let us open up a can of worms and measure police departments by the proportion of various races!
I think law enforcement professionals can be racist no matter what their race.
True indeed.
If they were looting, then criminals were running rampant.
EDIT.
Forty years of imbecility is enough.
Vulcans must take over. To save us.
"Logic, save me!"
"Emotion"? Really? Nice nuance there.
The Independents Attire Review, 13 August 2014
Mod Squad-Edition
- Peggy Lipton (as 'Kennedy'): Lacking the pre-requisite beret, bongos, and cigarette-holder, the stereotypical-beatnik 'glasses and turtleneck' look feels somewhat shortchanged. Why do we think we've fully crossed the line into hipster-town tonight? Well, cast your eyes rightward and...behold =
- Michael Cole (as 'Matt'): Fuck. Me. What was the old label we had for this monstrosity? 'Satan's Ma?tre d'? We'll switch that temporarily to "Wednesday Night Fever" for the evening... hoping that Matt in some way is presenting a thematic-timeline '1970s' reference to Kennedy's '60s' look. However, that theory would require....
- Clarence Lipton III (as 'Kmele'): ...to be rocking a 1980s motif, a la Big Daddy Kane, or maybe a pointy-shouldered suit and mandarin-collared shirt, a la Bobby Brown. Instead we get a fairly staid, tablecloth-plaid shirt and charcoal-grey jacket, hitting us with cold-water-bucket of Normalcy after the 'groovy-theme-party' of Kennedy and Matt.
We don't know quite what to think about the chosen garb for the evening, so we're going to throw tonight's victory to the "all around good-guy"-progressive scumbag. Why not.
Ciao, you crazy kids
where are the beagles?
I've got one. He's currently attempting to dig through the bottom of his crate.
Which is tough plastic that he's never been able to get through, but he's still trying.
I have one too. He's currently sleeping in his bed, but ~5 years ago when I first got him (first day, actually) I put him in his crate because my wife's car had broken down and I had to pick her up. When I came back he'd shredded the plastic bottom of the crate like it'd gone through a wood chipper. In like 1 hour.
Mines about four months old. So he's not trusted out of the crate yet.
My dog was around 2 when we got him from the pound (he'd been returned twice). We kept him in a crate for the first year or so, but he'd always break out. So we started of leave him out and then he was fine. I think he'd probably be better if we got him as a puppy and crate trained him, but at this point he hates to be imprisoned.
Yeah my pup was under a porch with his mom and siblings. The rescue lady named the four pups after The Voice judges. I picked out the only one of the four I can stand. Good choice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kFzRTENSC4
Beagles are a great kind of dog. Mine came with the name Philly, because that's where he is/came from. But it kinda fits because he's a loveable asshole.
Yeah mines mixed with some other dogs. No idea what. Poor bugger is teething right now.
One of the remains is playing Candlestick tomorrow.
If you get cremated, you can't roll over in your gave.
I believe human remains should be strapped to armatures and then subjected to the Newsroom in order to harness their angular momentum.

People who change diapers in a restaurant deserve to be kicked out. Why is this a story?
Because of the massive sense of entitlement young mothers have in this generation?
I thought there were changing stations in bathrooms?
Why do parents want to take babies everywhere? OK, I can see wanting to get out of the house once in a while, but if you just don't feel like cooking, order takeout.
Disclaimer: I am an uncle to a 1 and 1/2 year old. My brother takes him into bars and my nephew behaves well.
Because now having a child requires no change to one's lifestyle and how dare you baby-shame you cis-micro-rapist!
When I was in Tanzania, I rarely saw babies in public. When I did, they were tightly strapped to a woman's back and usually fast asleep.
Given the age demographics, all those babies must have been somewhere else.
When I was a kid, if I misbehaved in a store or restaurant or other public place, we left immediately. Then at home, I was spanked, and then sent to the corner.
I don't remember ever misbehaving, but I did apparently. Once or twice.
I got spanked with a belt a couple of times. I had it coming, so not hard feelings. Plus, I know my dad felt did it as a last resort.
? Oh mine papa! To me he was so wonderful!
The Belt
*no hard feelings
*omit "felt"
Same situation here: my nephew just turned 2 and my brother has been taking him just about everywhere. Never had a problem, as far as I know.
I work with kids. Done it for a decade now. I've seen hundreds, maybe thousands. There are very few bad kids, but there's a lot of bad parents.

Fuck you Proghole, a robot butler would be the bee's knees!

Well, yes, Kmele, a physician is kinda of an expert in what is a healthy weight.
Jus' sayin'
Psychiatrist?
Ablow seems ablow-hard
"Ablow has made a number of controversial statements, including psychological assessments of various celebrities he has never examined, that have drawn criticism from other practitioners in his field as well as from various organizations and groups which were offended by his comments. Ablow has stated in an article on the Fox News website[15] that years ago he "resigned in protest" from the American Psychiatric Association, which is the governing body that sets the standard of practice in the field of psychiatry and publishes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). In the article, he did not state what he had been protesting about"
Professional Douchebag
I've mentioned Ablow's blowhardness before. He's an asshole.
Congratulations
You found someone I respect less than Counselor Troi.

That was the most effective I have seen her.
[furrows brow]
I'm sensing...sarcasm.
"During the 2012 Republican primary, Ablow wrote a column arguing that Newt Gingrich's three marriages actually made him more qualified to be president. He wrote: "When three women want to sign on for life with a man who is now running for president, I worry more about whether we'll be clamoring for a third Gingrich term, not whether we'll want to let him go after one."[21]"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN42uzNFVmQ
You should have told Ablow to either drop and do 20 pushups or STFU
