Tonight on The Independents: Ilya Shapiro on SCOTUS, Radley Balko on Police-Militarization, Elizabeth MacDonald on the Atrocious GDP Numbers, Eli Lake on ISIS, Plus Clinton Poverty, IRS Illegality, and More!
Tonight's episode of The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, with re-airs three hours later) gets straight into some Supreme Court news from today: The robust victory for cellphone privacy in Riley v. California, and the big victory for Big Media in American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. v. Aereo. Navigating both decisions is Cato Supreme Court Review Editor in Chief Ilya Shaprio.
Beloved former Reason staffer Radley Balko will break down the ACLU's big new report, "War Comes Home: The Excessive Militarization of American Policing." Daily Beast national security reporter Eli Lake will talk about the latest horrors from ISIS. Fox Business analyst Elizabeth MacDonald will dive into those ghastly new GDP numbers. Party Panelists Jill Filipovic and Sonnie Johnson will argue about the Clinton family's finances (and depictions thereof), and the co-hosts will bat around the latest IRS illegality.

FIRST! (?) & probably my only post.
No. You're second. Welch was first.
Matt hardly counts, let's be honest.
You know who isn't first?
Enjoy it while it lasts - in a couple of hours this will get reposted and all the comments scrubbed.
Thus ends the works of Ozymandius.
& I won't be here to beat everyone to the punch by then.
Hello.
Balko! This may be the only time I actually watch TI.
Beloved former Reason staffer Radley Balko will break down the ACLU's big new report, "War Comes Home: The Excessive Militarization of American Policing."
I've said it before and I'll say it again. He should have a weekly spot carved out to come on < i The Independents and tell us about our warriors in blue.
"The Weekly Nut Punch?"
Hmm what segment would the nut punch replace? What daily segment is god awful and universally loathed? Hmm, well I'm sure the Topical Storm will escape the axe.
Finally my post went through. I post so rarely what could I have possibly done to draw the squirrels ire
Balko's so badass he doesn't even use periods
Periods Get In The Way
...said the man with the red beard
Nothing? Not even from the ladies out there?
You bunch of humorless bastards.
Sentences were ended.

This reminds me of the brunch menu at the Williamsburg Brooklyn Ur-Hipster eatery, called (unsurprisingly) 'Diner', which would be a 4x9 card that said things like,
Coffee
Toast
Eggs
Bacon
etc
Then the waitress (*always a 6'5" lesbian for some reason) would come by and ask if you wanted to hear 'the specials'. You would say yes, then,
"..Well we have a semolina-free Fritatta garnished with hand-picked cherry tomato confit with pine nuts and sliced anchovies on a bed of twice-washed kale-roots soaked in a swedish balsamic vinagrette as a side for the gluten free boysenberry-and-capers Crepes which are topped with braised Peruvian pine-nuts and sun-dried lemon zest which is complimented by the Uruguayan gezpacho (My Favorite) which uses laboratory-grade squash reduction in a colloidal mixture with chili powder and pureed Kiwi and essence of Truffle or you could consider the vegan poached avacado-benedict rancheros (which isnt as spicy as it sounds) that comes with a mushroom-and-ostrich-bacan sandwich made with oatmeal-peanut pancake bread...."
...at which point you just stop her, and go, "uh yeah, fine, Do you have pancakes? I'll have pancakes. and coffee".
It has since changed ownership, and has quasi-normal(er) menus.
the Uruguayan gezpacho (My Favorite) which uses laboratory-grade squash reduction in a colloidal mixture with chili powder and pureed Kiwi
Chili powder? What is this, Auschwitz?
the vegan poached avacado-benedict rancheros (which isnt as spicy as it sounds) that comes with a mushroom-and-ostrich-bacan sandwich
What's the fucking point of a vegan anything that's also served with ostrich bacon? Last I checked, an ostrich is a fucking animal!
You fail to appreciate the combination of Magical Realism and Th??tre de l'Absurde necessary for a truly hip Brunch menu
also, capers.
You know it's a damn shame that Old Devil Moon closed its doors. A damn shame.
So I went to Dale Bros Brewery in Upland last night for the first time. They have some great beers. I don't think they distribute their small batches, but their flagship Pomona Queen was quite delicious. I'm kicking myself for not trying them out earlier. Now I only a month to enjoy their brews before I move

The case of the woman in Sudan who was sentenced to death, and then got her conviction overturned, for allegedly renouncing Islam for Christianity: It seems she faces new charges - this time because she tried to leave the country (for some reason). Apparently the charge is using false travel documents.
Lawyer: "Her husband Daniel and the children are with her in the same cell. Any reports suggesting she has been released are wrong. We need to highlight her plight."

Ah the FRC.
Everybody loves the FRC

If it weren't for the squirrels, these links would have garnered a few comments, I bet.
Wow, the comment got through!
President Mujica of Uruguay takes a bite at the Suarez controversy
"I did not see him bite anyone. But they give each other so many kicks and blows and normally they put up with it"
(from Yahoo Sports)

Sounds like this guy is pulling a Chirac after Zidane's barbaric headbutt.
Gonna lay done the law here and if there are South Americans here too bad.
South Americans have been playing in Serie A and La Liga for decades so fans who watch those leagues know how they play just like they knew Zidane was a petulant, violent thug during his days with Juve.
They're rough. Very rough. Brilliant players but rough. They're famous for their fouls in Serie A. Uruguayans, Argentinians, Colombians, and Brazilians in particular commit most of the vicious fouls. It's HOW THEY PLAY.
So listening to this guy rabble is hilarious.
I remember years ago, as I mentioned in the A.M links, when we played a team from Argentina. We got to know them and they explained to us something we never knew. How to tug the sweater hard enough so that you mark you man close enough to clip him at the ankles - constantly.
That's where 'embellishment' began. The close chopping at shins and ankles which is a SOUTH AMERICAN feature.
I don't mind it. But for them to actually cry as if they're innocent is retarded. Uruguay came to make that a slug fest. Italy obliged is all.
There are two types of people: Those who defend the likes of Suarez and Zidane and those who don't.
I agree.
Hockey is a great game.
Oh, look.
The comments section works.
This is my unimpressed face.

Squirrel in video: "Your invisible force field won't protect you forever, human! I shall exsquirrelminate you!"
That jaw/teeth clicking noise is what makes it.
I will post as many comments as I damn well please, Reason.

I was flipping channels last night and noticed an announcement for Everybody Loves Raymond now on Deja View.
Very depressing. I'm psychologically not aging well.
Old episodes of the Independents are already showing on Me TV.
Is that what they show in prisons?
Only in women's prisons. In men's prisons it's Lifetime.
The Supreme Court is hearing an 8th Amendment challenge next term.
I say we boycott reason until they disband the comment death panel. WHO'S WITH ME?
DEATH PANELS!?
Had I known that I would've never supported the Affordable Comment Act.
If you like your comment spamming you can keep it.
Prediction: Not live.
Why is Kennedy wearing an irregular shirt? You're on TV, you can afford proper clothing.
Pickup trucks?
Yee-haw, by Allah!
It's funny becuase...it's not.
"Jihadis with naughty bodies."
She said that. You can't unhear it. Just get over it.
Oh, no. I'm not going to learn any more stans.
Good god, you're living at least a full minute ahead of me. He didn't start talking about -stans until I'd refreshed and already read your comment.
How do you think he manages to be first all the time?
Ugh, it took you forever to finally post that comment.
If only I'd had my hundredth cup of coffee today 🙁

My pockets contain my entire life. So does my trunk.
Heh...the Justices got briefed by their young clerks about all that newfangled technology.
Ginsburg's phone is avocado green and rotary, the way God intended.
Since everyone is posting squirrel stuff, here is a picture of a squirrel trying to break into my house. My kid wasn't scared of that rat.
You didn't drone strike it?
Hunting squirrels with drones... We could make a business out of this.
If by business you mean "reality show."
Suckers can bite.
If Welch can't be bothered to bump this post, why should I expend time watching the episode?
Hey, if they won't fix the servers, why presume they'd bump a thread.
RECESSION!
2.9% shrinkage!
Don't get in the cold water economy!
The market has been circumcized
I knew it. Climate Changed fucked up Obama's economy.
The truth won't come out until QE ends.

What is the Problem With Michael Jackson?*-Edition
- Kennedy: Acres of skin. The piping on the edges and neck of her sleeveless number provide a wonderful "Tron" effect against the set background. We want to throw her a neon Frisbee and make funny "bbazzzzzmmm" sounds while doing so. The fact her skin already maintains a strange, 'Vaseline on the lens', translucent glow simply highlights the effect.
- Matt: Hey look = a *darker* grey shirt!... Because the light-grey wasn't bringing enough *hotness*... and hey! who needs collar stays either? My feelings... are....predictable. All that sustains us is the knowledge that at least he owns white & blue shirts now.
- Kmele: Kmele's "super-skinny lapels" jacket in play here, used in what I think is its best role: no-tie, casual. That olive color is something we've never seen a 'perfect' tie with as of yet, and foregoing one entirely is probably best. This is the look I've rolled with since I turned 30, and I still don't understand why this isn't an everyday thing for most men.

*Warning = the comments in that above linked video are dangerously stupid even by YouTubes most unbelievably and painfully-stupid standard. Avoid them at all costs.
I knew they would save Balko for the second half of the show. Bastards!
Me, too many comments that's absurd.
Bill Clinton: I feel your pain.
Hillary Clinton: Feel my pain.
Damn hadda dig deep to find the thread. WTF Welch, U R slackin.
Oh fuuuuuuuuck you. And fuck FDR.
Problem posting my comment? FUCK YOU TOO!
Does the show work as well as the servers?
Gonna sue the fucking squirrels for mesothelioma....
AND I HAVE NOT POSTED TOO MANY COMMENTS.
And I'm still trying to find out what thread you were responding to with the comment on the emails.

I hate the Eagles, man.
Kennedy should have been piggy-backing off of Kmele, since that's how the show goes intellectually speaking.
The servers should be left alone in a room with a seppuku sword, and let their sense of honor do the rest.
"You have made too many comments. Please try again later."
Just when I thought the Reason threads and its issues couldn't sink any lower.
I'm going to do what everyone else is doing, starting today.
My web donation this year starts at $500. Every time there is a problem with the website, I'll deduct $50.
I'll show my math at donation time.
They teased with Balko. Saved him for the end.
The Balko segment is pretty much the only thing I'd watch without the incentive of being able to comment.
Re: The servers.
Hit 'em in the wallet. Depending on your donation level, knock $X off for each comment screw-up.
My donation is now $310 lighter than it was in 2013; not much room left.
I think they've been having heavy spikes in traffic during AM PM and TI commenting sessions. A lot of the problems they've had have been overload and their attempts to wrangle the overload.

"I think they've been having heavy spikes in traffic during AM PM and TI commenting sessions."
Could be selective memory on my part, but I don't see it so time-constrained.
In fact, when I emailed Mike last week, it was dark on the west coast, so that was past 8:30PM.
I'm on board. See above.
Servers - may the IRS delete you.
Dear Independents =
Have Balko on every month to talk about this issue. No one else talks about police over-reach/misconduct. At all.
Also, Balko is cool.
AH! Lou Dobbs.
Well, that was infuriating.
Too bad the H&R commenters won't complain, I mean, it's not as if they're a bunch of IT guys or anything.
