Merkel Calls Obama To Discuss Whether the NSA Targeted Her Cellphone

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called President Obama after the German government reportedly received information suggesting that U.S. intelligence may have targeted her cellphone.
Merkel spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that the German chancellor "views such practices, if the indications are confirmed … as completely unacceptable."
The Obama administration is denying that Merkel's phone was targeted. From USA Today:
Obama "assured" Merkel during a Wednesday phone conversation that the U.S. is not monitoring the chancellor's communications, said White House spokesman Jay Carney.
Der Spiegel reported that Merkel phoned Obama to discuss the allegations.
The United States "is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor," Carney said.
Last month, thousands of Germans protested the NSA's snooping. The German government's cooperation with the NSA, which Merkel herself defended last July, became one of the key issues in the most recent elections.
The news comes in the same week that it was reported that the NSA has been spying on millions of French phone calls and that U.S. intelligence has been spying on the Mexican president's public email account. Both Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry have tried to address the French government's concerns over the alleged spying, which French officials have called "totally unacceptable."
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has said that the reports of the NSA snooping on French phone calls are "misleading" and "false."
As Reason's Ron Bailey pointed out yesterday, the most recent revelations fuelled European lawmakers to back legislation that would protect Europeans' privacy.

Did Merkel have to take a number and get in line, because it sounds like there are several heads of state making this phone call.
The UN is a joke, but I can't believe for the life of me there is not a mass complaint happening there right now and a demand that sanctions be imposed on the US government for not recognizing the national sovereignty of...of...well, of every other nation in the world.
OT: No hesitation! Deputies shoot and kill a 13-year old carrying a toy gun.
Too late.
I propose we immediately bomb Turtle Bay, preemptively.
With white phosporous
Like the Germans don't also spy on us and the rest of their allies, too.
She's shocked! Shocked to discover gambling is going on in this establishment!
Precisely. What the hell are these "leaders" doing in charge of national governments not knowing that ALL countries spy on each other. It is just what countries do, and what they have always done.
If there is, it's not out of any sense of outrage -- the American people may have been shocked by how far the US government has gone; I suspect that the countries populating the UN are more surprised that this is even controversial domestically.
"I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we ... blah, blah, blah ... restored our image as the last, best hope on earth."
EPIC FAIL!
Yeah, but the climate IS cooling!
Listening in to the phone calls of foreign leaders is what the NSA is supposed to do.
"which Merkel herself defended last July"
Sounds like she is getting a taste of her own medicine.
Also I wonder if she is smart enough to know that Obama lied to her.
The USA Today articles left out some key points. Apparently some spokesperson for the US government was asked whether it is also true that in the past they did not wiretap Merkel's phone. The spokesperson then did not want to answer that question. Which answers it.
You know who else monitored communications?
Bill Belichick?
+1 handheld recorder
Patriots haven't won a title since they were forced to stop cheating.
Nikola Tesla?
Lieutenant Uhura?
Guglielmo Marconi?
Sounds like she needs to dust off the old Enigma machine.
Sounds like she needs to be more like Hitler in the bunker.
two Nazi references? To the Godwin sin bin with you!
Meh. The Hitler ref was a Godwin. The Enigma ref is a good example of how the game is played - getting as close as possible without actually referencing Hitler or Nazi's.
Also, honorable mention to PD Scott above for the "shocked" reference since Renault was a Nazi collaborator, although not an enthusiastic one.
Sounds like she needs another reference to Nazi Germany inserted here.
Mr. Watson?
Siri?
"James Clapper has said that the reports of the NSA snooping on French phone calls are "misleading" and "false""
If anyone knows what a misleading and false statement is, its James Clapper.
Of course its false. They never listened to phone calls, just the digital recordings of phone calls.
Well played!
They never enven listened to the digital recordings.
Just the sound waves emanating from their computer speakers as it played the digital recordings of the phone calls.
It was the least untruthful statement he could make.
Tom Tomorrow is apparently far left enough that he can actually criticize the President.
Don't worry, he gets back to carrying water for Obama soon enough.
Well, of course. I mean, even with his constant and colossal fuck ups, he's still better than Rethuglikkkens.
Wait, did she call him on the compromised phone? So was her complaint also logged, recorded, and added to the disposition matrix? How big of a complaint means a drone strike?
Merkel should feel flattered that Obama treats her with the same contempt he treats American citizens.
This. Obama probably consider her a personal enemy, because she doesn't loathe America; doesn't feel like it's Germany's responsibility to take care of all the lazy bums of Europe; and doesn't share his love of Saul Alinsky politics, massive deficit spending, and wealth redistribution.
Don't give a shit. We have intelligence agencies for a reason; one of those is to ascertain the stance of foreign governments (even those which are nominally our allies).
What Snowden revealed about PRISM is important; this is mundane (especially since our "allies" in France, Germany, and the UK are known to do the exact same thing to us).
I think what's important about this story is that apparently Obama peddles the same bullshit to foreign heads of state that he tries to sell to us.
And apparently, they believe him until someone informs them of reality.
It is quite amazing, considering that Merkel grew up in East Germany.
Yes, this is only an outrage to low information voters and philosophical purists.
And I thought Snowden was only about NSA's domestic activities?
ACA Short Cut

Bandwidth limit? Is this funny in a meta way?
From my perspective, Angel Merkel may be the only legitimate target I've yet heard of.
Putin.
Actually, Putin's probably listening to Obama's phone calls.
Obama: It says "active x component not installed to run this page"
Sebelius: Do you see the bar at the top?
Obama: The top of what?
Sebelius: The browser?
Obama: No, I just see a blue bar, and the website address.
Sebelius: No, below the address...
Obama: No.
Sebelius: Hang on, what version of IE are you running?
Obama: I'm running Safari.
Sebelius: The ACA isn't compatible with Safari.
Obama: How come, I like Safari better.
Putin: Oh for fuck's sake, Obama, run a fucking PC like everyone else.
Nice. I LOL'd
I didn't know that Blackberry ran Safari.
Whoa, Hitler, dial down the racism. This is Hit & run, we use racist code words here, like "budgets" and "liberty".
CAPTION:
"...and then Valerie Jarrett appeared from out of NOWHERE, wrestled me to the ground, and gave me a noogie!"
Who'd have ever believed that the president to follow George Bush could do more damage to international relations and the international reputation of the US than what he inherited from his predecessor?
*raises hand*
But, but,..Hillary had a reset button!
Hillary had a reset overcharge button!
She'll be needing it again in a few years...
...unfortunately.
How the hell would Obama know?
Has there been a story in the news about it? Is it in a leaked document?
Obama has, over the past few months, made it completely crystal clear that he has .... NO IDEA .... what is happening in his administration!!
Believe me, he's more frustrated than anyone else that this could happen.
He gets really pissed when he reads about his administration's shenanigans in the newspaper.
that's because they are sugarcoated in the press. and he won't stand for that.
I'm not going to sugarcoat it: Obama's administration has not been as transparent as he promised it would be.
And Obama's really ticked about that!
He's too smart to worry about those little things. He's not like an ordinary person. He ponders the great questions, and no one even knows what those questions are, because no one is smart enough to comprehend them, except for his excellency.
That's rights, he is a big picture guy. He is so big picture he doesn't even know who to hold accountable.
"Accountability Czar" in 3, 2, 1, ....
Most super-duper transparent government evar!
If the German Chancellor isn't doing anything wrong she doesn't have anything to hide.

Do you suppose Obama had to deal with an echo when he was on the phone with Merkel?
I'm pretty sure his echo chamber is always with him.
Wild guess: they did, and he lied about it.
-jcr
It's completely ridiculous to accuse Obama of lying - he just has his own definition of words. Is the US government monitoring Merkel's cellphone? Of course not - as long as you understand that 'monitoring' means something much different from 'keeping a record of every call she makes and receives possibly recording the conversation itself' because they're doing that. But it's not monitoring. It's merely a dynamically passive digital data identification archival retention methodology.
Poor Turtle
The comments are the best though...
It looks like Bowser from the Mario games.
"Luke, fetch my rifle."
Seems like them expanding their territory would help fix that. There is no such thing as an invasive species. Humans and their effects on other species are just as natural as anything else.
The Simpsons have forever altered my image of Germans.
People from the Land of Chocolate?
Ja ja ja, mach schnell mit der art things, huh? I must get back to Dancecentrum in Struttgart in time to see Kraftwerk. Hey, und dummkopf! Watch out for the CD-changer in my trunk, eh? Idiot.

As always with this crew, careful parsing pays off.
Note what they denied: that they targeted her cell phone.
I doubt they target much of anyone. Aren't they just sweeping all the info?
Targeting comes later, when the Prez needs a pick-me-up and sets up some drone strikes.
"Now, Chancellor, first let me say, uh, that we haven't been monitoring your phone calls. And, uh, let me also say that your lover in Bremen is getting way too clingy, calling you at all hours of the day and night. You need to set some boundaries!"
Hahaha
The pentagon is gathering all foreign government intel it can get its hands on.
And just what are all these allies going to do about it except send OGL a "strongly worded letter?" Too bad they don't have the guts to throw all U.S. troops out of their country and assume their own burden of defense.
Seriously. Don't like it? Do something about it. I dare you.
Heh. The castrati who populate Europe's governments can't even stand up to the EU; what makes anyone think they'd have the balls to cut themselves off from their sugar daddy?
The NSA doesn't target anyone, they are completely indiscriminate that way.
If those communications are at any point passing through the US based telecom backbone then they most certainly are. Along with everyone else's. Love the scare quotes around "assured." Are we finally at that point where the media is using scare quotes for anything coming out of the bullshitter in chief's mouth, or did they really just quote a single word?
Which is probably the "least untruthful" statement he can make. Or some such bullshit.
the U.S. is not monitoring the chancellor's communications
Paging Bill Clinton. Is President Bill Clinton there?
Mr, President over the last month the Chancelor used the following terms in reference to you:
"dummkopf" 48 times
"schweinhund" 31 times
"Scheisskopf" 24 times
and then the really negative stuff...
"Beware Mr. Obama, ve Germans are not all smiles und sunshine."
"Oh no, the Germans! The Germans are mad at me!!"
"Stop it. Stop it."
I'm pretty sure that all the countries currently complaining about U.S. surveillance, drone attacks, and other violations of state sovereignty will willingly embrace Obama's assurances as long as said assurances are accompanied by a token of sufficient monetary value.
"Of course not! Why, I'm not even listening to you now."
"German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called President Obama after the German government reportedly received information suggesting that U.S. intelligence may have targeted her cellphone."
Why? Is there any doubt he's going to lie about it?
