Small-Government GOP Governors Getting All Pissy About Sequester Cuts
If GOP members of Congress have finally (and mostly reluctantly) signed on to the reality of sequester cuts, the country's Republican governors seem a lot more bent out of shape at the idea of losing various crumbs from federal coffers. Here's the Christian Science Monitor on the case:
When asked specifically if he would accept new tax increases as part of a compromise to avoid the cuts – in other words, the White House's preferred solution – [GOP] Governor [Robert] McDonnell [of Virginia] didn't say no. "The solution is up to Congress," he said. "I'm just saying don't put all the burden on the states and the military. You guys figure out how to get it done."…
And remember give-em-hell Jan Brewer, the Republican governor who is arguably most famous for wagging her finger at Obama on a Grand Canyon State tarmac?
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) – who has publicly clashed with the president in the past – also wouldn't rule out tax increases as part of an eventual solution to avoid the sequester. Speaking on "Face the Nation," Governor Brewer noted that her state would be hit particularly hard by the cuts to border patrol agents. "We don't like increases in taxes," she said. "But … we know we have to be pragmatic. We know that there has to be some type of compromise."
Meanwhile, Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) says
"Everyone is concerned about this, and well we should be," said Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, who blamed the upcoming cuts on "a total lack of leadership" by the White House. He warned that "lives will be put in jeopardy" from cuts to military and air-transit funding.
Yeah, no. Planes will not fall from the sky and al Qaeda will not infiltrate the U.S. because of sequester cuts.
Then there are Republican governors who are not getting squishy on the sequester (most of whom run states with relatively few military bases) but just suck on their own budgets. Consider, for instance, Ohio's John Kasich, who told Larry Kudlow recently that the sequester should kick in if the feds can't get their act together (he uttered something about hoping a compromise could be reached). But Kasich has signed off on Obamacare's Medicaid expansion (he told Kudlow unconvincingly that such a move would help him control spending better) and his own budget jacks spending up in the Buckeye State by a nice chunk of change:
GRF [General Revenue Fund] spending under Governor Strickland [Kasich's Democratic predecessor] was $50.7 Billion.
John Kasich's first budget increased GRF spending to $55.8 Billion.
Kasich's new budget increases spending even more: to $63.2 Billion.
That's an increase of $12.5 Billion dollars over the course of Kasich's term as governor.
Matt Mayer, of the conservative think tank Opportunity Ohio, told Plunderbund : "I guess we now know why Governor Kasich refuses to fund a tax cut by reducing spending. Congressman Kasich would have had a field day with this budget."

The Republican Party is in a tizzy these days, talking about the need for rebranding, fresh ideas, you name it. Don't you understand? Obama's Democrats are playing dirty, using social media and other cheap tricks to beat us!
In Washington, the GOP is led by ideological non-entities such as Speaker John Boehner (who voted for TARP, No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, all the war spending you can imagine, etc.) and House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. These guys are quintessential big government conservatives who want to cut the other party's spending priorities while kicking out the jams for their own constituents. At the state level, the GOP has got a handful of true budget-cutting types who often muck up their "leave us alone" message with a bunch of extraneous social issues that scare the bejeezus out of independent voters.
On the state and federal levels, the GOP might do well to consider the notion that they should take their own rhetoric seriously and actually push for, you know, smaller government across the board. Not smaller government except for defense, or when it comes to policing gay sex, or targeting firms that might hire illegal immigrants, or opposing drug legalization. There's a goddamn large number of people out there (read: majority of voters) who have disaffiliated from either the Democrats or the Republicans who say they want a government that does less and costs less. Folks such as Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Justin Amash seem to be doing pretty well by laying down a logically consistent line.
Voters aren't going to swarm to the GOP to bask in the glow of Boehner and McConnell and Kasich and Brewer's flagrant B.S.ery when it comes to being small-government zealots. They just might respond to principled pols who actually mean it when they say government should be smaller, do fewer things, and cost us all less money.

Gee, haven't seen you in a while. Still cheer-leading for Team Blue, I see.

"Keep on apologizing for the frauds."
Dipshit, keep hitting on that strawman.
Oh, and learn to read.
Inept republican con artists continue to embarrass those who insist on "even-handedness to both parties."
sorry, sevvy, in order to get anywhere....
The republican party must be destroyed.
And inept democrat con artists continue to embarrass those who insist that the President really, REALLY cares about cutting spending (and human life, and freedom, and peace, and....).
In order to get anywhere....
Both parties will probably have to die.
Them's the breaks, shill.
Yeah, I don't see how anyone can claim one party or the other should be destroyed and that this would somehow help. If anything, can you imagine the shit that the Democrats or Republicans would get up to if they didn't have to worry about elections? We'd be living in a dictatorship in about 6 days.

Ignoramus con artists continue to claim all is good with sleazy dems. That would be you, asshole
"The republican party must be destroyed."
Yeah,...a one party system would be fucking awesome. No more obstructionism. It has always worked out so well in the past, what could possibly go wrong???

Yeah, like the poor will respond to someone who does something rather than pander.
Yep. Letter in today's paper: "Working class folks won't vote for you Republicans until you do something for us."
Small govt and less spending is an electoral loser. Sorry. You CANNOT have an entire party survive on small govt.
The exit polls don't show Obama winning because Romney wasn't principled enough, they show him winning because he wouldn't cut spending and would continue the stream of free shit.

So you're saying we need Blue and Turquoise Parties?
So you're saying we need Blue and Turquoise Parties?
In other words, the status quo.
No, we need an unprincipled spending red party (with a smattering of small govt type seedlings) to counter the principled spenders on the blue side.
IOWs, the status quo.
Those exit polls didn't poll the republicans and other disenchanted who didn't show up because they had no real choice.
One of those exit poll things I remember was something like 61% of voters thought Romney was better on "jobs and the economy". If that was real data and confirmed by additional polling the outcome seems bizarre.

The GOP modus operandus: they'll have a few barking dogs making talk about small government while for the rest of the gang it is big government business as usual, they never get called out for it on the national stage anyways.
the reality of sequester cuts
WTF are you talking about, Nick? Is Reason playing along with this bullshit now?
A CUT is when you spend less than you did before. It's not when your increase is less than you wanted.
-jcr
Yes, the sequester cuts are not cuts. They are increases. And one does not fund a tax cut.
Fucking mendacious govt. Newspeak pisses me off.
That was not aimed at you Nick, the last 3 paragraphs are on target. Still, JCR is correct. Dont call it a cut when it aint.
I don't know how you two can be so nonchalant about all of this. How will any of our noble government programs survive this devastating slight increase?
I crave the sweet tears of unemployed sycophants. Let them try to find real jobs in the economy laid waste by their idols.
-jcr
"devastating slight increase"
Nicely done - stolen!
Which, of course, none of the national news programs are reporting. Just disseminating Obama's lists of massive cuts and layoffs as facts.
Why isn't anyone saying "Hey! How in the world were you able to employ all these people this year, you get an increase in funding, yet you need to lay off tens of thousands of people? Did you just hire them today?"
Also, plenty of news programs today showing cuts to the NIH, which (they really said this) might prevent cures for major diseases from happening.
I've had pay cuts the last 5 years - damn increases less than what I wanted.
Wherever you go, there you are.
If we completely dismantled both parties and all government in this country in order to start over, we would still be us. We would rebuild something identical to what we have now in less than 5 years.
Fucking GOP.
Pretty sure it was "His Excellency" (Ellis) who wrote how Washington despised the notion of political parties but never arrived at any sort of theory on how a government could work absent them.
The GOP is at least as pathetic as the dems as regards its stated 'mission', but any wrench tossed in the system is as good as we get right now.
Wanna see what wef likes? Check out CA! Wonderful place!
Did you like His Excellency? I couldn't really get into it. That's kind of par for the course for me when it comes to Washington biographies though. As important as he was, the man was almost oppressively boring and he had nowhere near the personality of the other founders.
Irish,
All I can tell you is that the very act of reading is a pleasure, so books like that or "Post War" or "A Monetary History..." are something I look forward to. And most often there are gems buried in there.
I'd rate Washington as probably the least 'thoughtful' (intellectual?) of the noted founders, but his ethics informed a lot of the act of founding.
Not one of my "heroes" (whatever that could mean), but someone to admire for certain attributes.
I agree with you generally, in that I like to read a lot of topics most people would find boring as hell. I just think that Washington tends to be the least human founder. The most memorable story most people know about Washington is the cherry tree story...and that didn't actually happen.
More than any of the other founders he gets built up as a mythic figure, but once you actually get older and start reading about the guy you can't entirely figure out what was so special about him. Even Adams basically admitted that the reason Washington was always getting picked to lead things was because he was the tallest guy in the room and it just seemed appropriate.
Crossing posts; see below.
And, no, I *never* bought the 'cherry tree' story; see, oh, 'loaves and fishes' for equal bullshit.
But Washington did throw a coin across the Potomac, didn't he?
Spread, spread Delaware...he's coming, he's coming. Ooooh, Washington, Washington...
Oh, and I'd recommend "Washington's Crossing" (Fisher). It lends a bit of researched muscle to the 'skinny kids with squirrel rifles' claim.
Washington learned to use what he had; the Brits kept hoping to get what they wanted.
I'll have to check that out. Right now I'm reading that Comanche Empire book by Pekka (Last Name I can't even hope to spell.) It's very good and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in American history.
http://www.amazon.com/Comanche.....he+empire?
That one?
Hey, I'm close to needing more reading material...
BTW, just ordered it.
We would rebuild something identical to what we have now in less than 5 years.
Don't worry though, after Team Purple gets done wrecking the living shit out of the economy, we won't be rebuilding any semblance of what we have now, for a very long time.
The headline is 'Small Government GOP Governors Getting All Pissy... blah blah blah', then the examples are Brewer and Perry? Those are our examples of small government anything??? WTF? Who the hell wrote this, was it someone from MSNBC?
WTF? Who the hell wrote this, was it someone from MSNBC?

He can always shoot for FluffHost, I hear that some former H&R peeps wind up over there.
Weigel has got a nice gig at Slate.
Weigel
*Spits*
He could have included my very own beloved governor, Bobby Jindal.
Under Jindal state government has shrunk. The number of state employees has dropped dramatically, yet the state payroll has increased.
How on earth could that be?
Jindal fits the bill much better than those 2. Or Gary Johnson, except he's not a governor anymore. Hell, even Mitch Daniels would fit that description better than Perry or Brewer.
I was alluding to him laying off low level employees and hiring his cronys at absurd salaries for non-existent jobs. As far as I am concerned he just looted the state treasury Obama style.
The guy is so crooked, when he dies they wont have to dig a grave, they can just screw him in the ground.
Ah, I see, I had to re-read your post to see the detail and sarcasm. I had heard good things about him, but I guess like most other politicians, once you take a closer look, it's like seeing a woman walking, when you are out driving, that at first you think is really hot, but then you get a little closer and realize that she's actually quite fat and homely.
You know your shit on Jindal. I'm impressed.
Has there ever been a Louisiana politician that wasn't that crooked?
Um, sure, that one guy...whatshisname...or am I thinking of...no, wait, it'll come to me!
Are there any jerbz down there, besides huntin gators(not that I am opposed to that)? I have to get the fuck out of here, I've about had it with this traffic and all the idiotic team blue zombies.
Oil and gas and chemicals
Depends on what line you are in Hyperion. What do you do?
Oil and gas in the north, plus Shreveport/Bossier city is booming. The oil and gas is creeping south....I am holding my breath hoping the shale gas extends under my 600 acres of timber....Jeebus it would mean a river of money for me.
I'm a software engineer. What are housing prices like down there? Wife and I really like TN and NC, SC, but there aren't many jobs. I thought about TX too. I have a really good job here, but I am starting to really dislike MD and it's so goddamn expensive to live here, we won't even consider buying a home here, the prices and taxes are fucking absurd.
Compared to the rest of the country it is insanely cheap to live here. Real estate is a fraction of what it costs elsewhere, and we have one of the lowest property tax rates in the nation. I paid 180 for 2200 sq ft, six acres, and I have 660 feet waterfront on rigolette bayou. Taxes are around 1000 per year. I am out in the middle of nowhere, but that is how I like it.
I dont know anything about the software biz. Shreveport used to have a couple of companies but that was some time ago.
You would know better how to find the work, but if you are asking about the place, it is great here.
The people are extraordinarily friendly, the food is all kinds of fucking awesome, and living expenses low. Plus, the fishin' is good.
I've lived all over the country and have always found people to be more friendly in the south.
In fact, the farther north you go, the more of assholes people tend to be. In the NE, they are insufferably rude and stupid, and lots of them have fled down my way to escape the shitty northern climates.
I own a home in IN, similar in size to your home, also with 6 acres, I paid 160.(no waterfront access). Here in MD, it would be 500+ and with that much land your taxes would be more than the mortgage.
Yeah? Well, FUCK Yo....wait a minute...you almost had me there, ya bastard!
People are more friendly in the South. Except for the Yankee transplants of course.
I once stopped to help a guy who was broken down on the side of the road. He had a flat. I keep all kinds of repair supplies in my jeep, plus an air pump, fire extinguisher, jump battery etc.
When I stopped he got back in his car. When I walked over to his car he yelled at me "What do you want!!??"
He was from Massachusetts. He couldnt believe that anyone would stop to help a stranger and thought I was going to rob him.
After he calmed down he started telling me that he was confused by all of the strangers waiving at him when they passed on the road, or of the gall of the people who spit out of their car windows. I think he was having serious culture shock.
When I walked over to his car he yelled at me "What do you want!!??"
That would have tempted me sorely to leave him to his own devices.
-jcr

LMAO!
Yeah, I know man, I lived in TN and KY, and it's the same there, so I know exactly what you are talking about. When I tell people here that if your car breaks down there that 2 of the first 3 cars to pass you will stop to help, I really don't think that they believe me!
But here in MD, no one will stop to help you if you would die, they'll run over you maybe! and I bet half the people would have the same reaction of that guy, if anyone tried. Unless you get further South in the rural areas, then it's more like the South.
I confess, as a New England expat and a California resident, that governments have quite literally priced me out of the market for giving a shit about my fellow man. Chances are the distressed motorist struggling to change his flat tire is the same asshole who voted to increase my taxes and seize my guns; fuck that guy. I hope his jack collapses and he's trapped under his goddamned car and starves to death.
And that's exactly why I don't want to live there.
I want to be left alone.
You crack me up HM.
Go down in the atchafalaya basin, get yourself a cabin, grow a long beard and put up signs that say " I shoot trespassers" all around in the woods.
I am joking but there are people here like that. And they aint bluffing either.
My best friend, who now lives in Seattle (where the people are way too damn friendly for my tastes) always teases me like that too. We got folks like that up in Coos County, N.H. as well...and interestingly enough they're French (Acadians) too.
Still, when I retire, I plan on living in my swamp cabin, but it will be where my wife comes from, her home province translates as "Kali's Swamp".
Thailand? Are you serious, dude?
Well, I guess if the Kings men can't find you for using illicit substances like Kratom, or blogging on sites like this, to imprison you for life, you will do ok.
Dude...that is in the fucking golden triangle.
You are more intrepid than I am.
People are more friendly in the South.
And that's exactly why I don't want to live there.
I want to be left alone
Dude, you can be left alone in the south, if you move up on top of some mountain, change your name to Devil Anse, or something equally insane sounding, and shoot at everyone who comes near your cabin.
There aren't any mountains in Louisiana.
What county are you in? I am in Howard and 2200sft on 1/6 acre is $500k. Townhouses are going for $750 in Maplelawn.
I hate it, but my work is here and I am too old (57) to try to move (unless pushed). If the O'Malley gun laws pass, I will move to PA though.
What county are you in? I am in Howard and 2200sft on 1/6 acre is $500k. Townhouses are going for $750 in Maplelawn.
Well, yeah, Howard County, of course. I lived in EC for 3 years. I am in Mount Washington now, Baltimore City. Howard County is insanely expensive. The rest of Maryland is only slightly less insanely expensive.
I have considered moving to Frederick and doing the 2 hour commute to downtown Balmer, it's only 3 days a week I have to go to the office. But really, I am just thinking about leaving MD. I have a couple of co-workers who drive from PA to Baltimore 3 days a week.
I'm in my 50s and the wife and I do not consider ourselves too old to go for whatever if we can pull it off.
PA has its problems, but has MD beat. I was living part time in Glen Rock/ Shrewsbury area at a GF's. I did like that area despite a 50 mile commute, just grew to dislike the GF.
If the new gun law gets passed, I will look over in the Hanover area.
Who would pay 500 to live in Maryland??
I have a cousin in Ashville, NC.
He is some kind of investment advisor and as part of his job knows real estate.
According to him what I have would cost 2M + where he is.
That is insane.
I used to have a friend in Portland. She had half of what I have and paid 20K/yr. in taxes. Again, insane.
For those kinds of prices I want to wake up and hear the surf every morning.
I love it here. But then I am from here and this place is in my blood.
As a Houstonian I am partial to LA but I'm not sure I could live there. The prices elsewhere are insane I agree. My apartment with a downtown view would get me a closet in NYC.
My apartment with a downtown view would get me a closet in NYC.
I have a really nice apartment here in MD. Beautiful view with a large deck that I can cook on, short commute to work, but it's 1500 a month. Buying here is essentially for the wealthy or insane.
But I complain about that and I see TV shows with people paying $2500 for apartments in NYC, so small that they have to store their cookware in the oven! Fuck.That.Shit.
Well, Suthenboy, let me just say that I was in a situation that I needed to get away from. Also, I hate Indiana, it's fucking cold. But the home that I have there is really nice, I have been unwilling to sell it, until I find somewhere I can buy again.
So, at the time, although I was looking for a job nationwide, I took the first really good opportunity that fell to me. It wasn't all that bad, for a while, but now that I am married and want to settle down with the wifey and make a nice homestead, it's time to move on again. I love the south, I won't be looking north of here, that's for damn sure.
I should warn you, it rarely gets below 20 in the winter here, and then not for long. Maybe one or two nights warming up nnicely during the day, but.....the summers are oppressively hot. Equitorial hot. Many find it intolerable. Plus...skeeters.
Yet most transplants that I know are here to stay. The place grows on you.
I don't think it will bother me. I don't mind heat, and hate the cold. My wife is from equatorial Brazil, about 5 degrees latitude south of the equator. It is HOT and humid all year. I know it won't bother her, lol. I could definitely live there, but I will need AC to sleep, outside of that, I am good.
These are all pluses. I hate the cold and my lips start getting chapped from the dry air when I'm in Austin.
That happens to me when I have to keep the heat on in the house for long periods of time, I hate that shit. Plus getting shocked on things, that REALLY pizzes me off, it's worse than dry skin!
Yeah, I will take the tropical humidity any day.
Well to add to the South TX/LA convincing, I never used a heater this winter.
When I was in college (in the Fla, Panhandle) we invested the heating oil money in wholesale drugs. The fucking toilet froze. All-in-all it was money well-spent. We could have "re-invested the profits" in a late delivery of heating oil but we were in FLORIDA!.
The 20s ran late that year and single digits were reached.
Ha. It does happen, but not often.
A couple of years back we had snow on the ground for a week. This winter, nothing. I have a kiwi vine that survived the winter with no protection.
I have a wood stove for heat and I love the thing. I keep an old fashioned iron on it filled with water.
It humidifies the house so no chapped lips.
Are you Gerard from Cajun Pawnstars?
Heh, no I am not. I am laughing at that though.
I know those motherfuckers. And they are motherfuckers.
I assume you mean the pawnstore guys and not Gerard because that guy is awesome and I refuse to believe otherwise.
I dont watch TV, and you should watch less, but I know those guys.
I used to buy guns there. The actual gun guy is golden, but no TV personality so they dont put him on. Soft spoken and honest as the day is long. He sold me a very nice NIB BRNO 30-06 for 300 bucks.
The rest of them....slimy as hell. Con artists. Shake hands with them and you feel compelled to run to the lavatory and wash your hands.
I have no trouble believe that they are slimy being pawnstore owners and all.
My wife has an irrational love of reality shows and I'd much rather have that how on in the background while I read/play video games than Real Housewives of whatever.
Gerard is a Cajun "regular" with a delightful accent who always comes in and pawns his family heirloom instruments that always turn out to be authentic. They have an episode where they go out to his place and he tries to sell his "antique" wood stove and another where he successfully pawns his family gumbo recipe.
I have never seen the show, and dont know Gerard, but he sounds like a sterotypical cajun from the old days. Yeah, they are awesome. There are still a few around, mostly south of here. Plaucheville, Mansura, Ville Platte....there are even a few who dont speak english.
The family that owns the shop is not Cajun, but Italian. Jersey shore types. Unbottoned shirts, gold necklaces, elvis sideburn types.
Yeah I've never met a true Cajun who wasn't awesome as fuck.
You're near Alexandria? I've spent a lot of time in Shreveport, Natchitoches, and Lake Charles. Covington and Monroe too.
Near Colfax. I am in Alexandria 3-4 times a week, Shreveport once a week or so....and I used to live in nastytoecheese, but I avoid the place now if I can.
I wish I spent more time in Monroe/West Monroe.
Something about the gene pool there, they have the most beautiful women.
Craziest Town on Earth. The friendliest people too, both White and Black. I'd rather be in Monroe than most places in the US. It is kinda anarchic, like I remember much of the South in my youth.

..."my very own beloved governor"...
Ah OOOGHA!
Snort, snort...

or when it comes to policing gay sex
Did Nick Gillespie get hassled at the Washington Monument's mens room or something?
It would be nice to believe you could just replace these clowns and things would better. But I wonder. There seems to be something uniquely evil and corrupting about government. Once someone gets there, they just can't help but play top men and go out to fix what they think is wrong. The people who wouldn't be tempted, never get there.
There's nothing uniquely evil about government. It's just that the people who seek that sort of power are, by their very nature, narcissistic control freaks who want to increase their power and authority. People don't get corrupted by government. Only the already corrupt run for office.
Except the few who really try to get there to fix what the others have done. But they are, at the moment, only a very small exception to the rule.
Irish| 2.25.13 @ 9:38PM |#
"There's nothing uniquely evil about government."
I'd say it's evil. Just (assuming you can control the monster) less evil than anarchy.
A necessary evil, if you will,
John, the people who wouldnt be tempted dont want to have anything to do with government.
There is something uniquely evil and corrupting about government, and something uniquely evil and corrupt about those who seek out positions in government. The perfect poison.
I realize there are problems with term limits, but I still think the advantages outweigh the problems.
I am ready to abolish elections and have service in government be by lottery. Make it akin to jury duty.
OOOH, just remembered:
How do you cut the government costs of trials? Would you, oh, pay prosecutors less? Maybe hold the trials in less luxurious buildings? How about cutting the janitor pay?
Nope. Not on your life! Let's try to remove four of the CHEAPEST actors in the entire operation!
"Streamlining justice is worthy proposal"
Yep, cutting the fat is all the rage!

We could consider taking some ideas from the Swiss system, where there are no career politicians.
Swiss Political System
While we have many problems, if we cannot get rid of career politicians, we aren't going to make any real progress.
In other words they are what we are supposed to be.
I do believe that career pols are the heart of the problem. That is what I was getting at with the term limits bit.
I am not opposed to John's draft idea either. I have joked about it many times, but never thought it through enough to know if it is realistically workable.
In other words they are what we are supposed to be
Well, at least to the extent of the career pols, I would say yes, they are much more like what our founders envisioned.
OT: The news just informed me that a woman in Chicago was given a job by one of her relatives who works in government. Only problem? The woman who got the government job had been convicted years earlier for stealing 400,000 dollars from an armored car.
This could only happen in Cook County.
Chi-town is at the top of my "do not visit" list. I like DC, NYC and parts of the NE despite the hostile environment. If I was rich I could actually stand to live anywhere on the Pacific Coast. I fucking hate the MidWest. I have friends from Chicago, Nelson Algren is one of my favorite writers but I have no desire to ever set foot there. I suppose a well paid very temporary work gig would do it and I'd plan myself a whirlwind historic architectural, music, dining, and literary tour in my off time, but I'm not looking forward to it.
Stealing from an armored car implies that the lady committed armed robbery. So tell us again about Chicago's zero-tolerance policy on guns.
GOP Governors should not bitch about the sequester stuff, specifically.
States can, however, be expected to want more of what their residents send off to DC, back from DC.
Solve this by changing the proportion of tax money going to Federal vs. State coffers.
Just in case we needed another reason to see that Perry is a hack.
Boosh redux
Yeah, no. Planes will not fall from the sky and al Qaeda will not infiltrate the U.S. because of sequester cuts.
Yea, verily.
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT *WILL HAPPEN*?
the the moon will turn blood red, ...and sores and boils will appear all over the people who do not give their heart to Obama..the oceans turn into blood, and kills all marine life....all sequester advocates will be consumed by fire....and the people will knaw on their tongues because of the pain....and storms, lightning, and horrible earthquakes will erupt on earth. the great city will be split into three parts, and the cities of the nations will be destroyed.
Seriously. Also, women and minorities will suffer the most.
All of that's going to happen anyway if you don't send all of your money to Al Gore and his cronies. Climate change, dude.
Also, you left out flying scorpions, some dude named Apollyon, and the bottomless pit.
"Seriously. Also, women and minorities will suffer the most."
World ends tomorrow!
I just roll my eyes every time a libertarian clumps NCLB with things like TARP and war spending. You may not like the idea of a federal government having its way in education, but by most measures of student achievement (i.e. graduation rates, reading/math proficiency, achievement gaps), NCLB has improved education in this country and brought accountability to public schools in this country since its inception. People like Nick Gillespie need to stop clinging to their ideological preconceptions and maybe look into the facts a little more...

..."People like Nick Gillespie need to stop clinging to their ideological preconceptions and maybe look into the facts a little more..."
Fail.
Prove that your fave government system is better than the proposed alternatives.
Yes, we know government can do X, but you've yet to show that the gov't's X is the best available.
So, put up or shut up.
So? Even if the nation's government-run schools were producing super-geniuses, it still wouldn't have any bearing on the morality of taking money from innocent people, under threat of deadly force, to pay for these schools.
I roll my eyes at utilitarianism.
Utilitarianism is teh debbil. That is at the root of my disgust with consequentialist libertarianism.
"... by most measures of student achievement (i.e. graduation rates, reading/math proficiency, achievement gaps), NCLB has improved education in this country and brought accountability to public schools in this country..."
woodsy, Did you just reach up your ass and pull something random out and post it?
What will it be next time? Obama has brought accountability and transparency to the federal government?
Stricter gun control laws cause crime rates to drop?
Higher taxes stimulate the economy?
On the one hand, NCLB has improved standardized test scores for elementary-school aged Black and (English-speaking) Hispanic kids by skill-drilling them to death Asian-style in Reading and Math. On the other hand, NCLB has decimated funding for Gifted and Talented programs and since most states only test in English, has forced non-native English language learners to take a test that they are doomed to fail since they can't comprehend most of it due to it being in their second language. On the gripping hand, NCLB has exposed every single weakness in the public school system, which is a good thing, IMO.
Did NCLB increase education funding, or simply change the terms under which it is given to the states?
The problem with NCLB was it increased a Federal bureaucracy "mainstream" conservative Republicans once sought to totally abolish. Public schools have totally sucked ever since the feds got involved. That they come up with a new program (on top of all the old)that seems to marginally mitigate the mess is not a good thing. Bush had some success with NCLB policies at the state level in Texas. A conservative would have encouraged states to follow his example and adopt similar measures, not imposed it at the federal level.
Oh nos, troll has rolled it's eyes. Yikes!
"brought accountability to public schools"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
[takes a deep breath]
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
You should get your own show! You're hilarious! Accountability! Man, my stomach hurts! Honestly, I have not laughed this hard in months! Thanks, and please, don't let anyone scare you away. I don't have any reflexive disdain for people with your views -- I didn't take the time to check out any other responses, but if you got into some kerfuffles, great. I don't like tit-for-tats much, they are usually unproductive. On the other hand, this site is exactly where you SHOULD be, you can learn a great deal. (Not always from people's comments, of course.)
Is this you Erik?
If his music is as interesting as his comments, he may want to consider a new profession.
But, he said tit-for-tats, isn't that so cool? You don't think he's cool?
Yup, 'bout as cool as smooth jazz. Might as well just skip all the bullshit and just masturbate in public.
I can't remember who, a couple days ago, here, said that this is a difficult site to troll because of the extremely cynical nature of the commentariat.
Well, that was as accurate of a description of the posters here that I have heard yet. Not saying it's a bad thing, at all, sort of made me feel proud for being part of it. If cynicalness towards government is not needed right here and now, then it never has been.
It's really hard to insult people that do nothing but sit around and insult each other everyday.
We got rhino skin.
When a smart ass senior asked in AP Biology if any animals actually asked had bones in their boners my equally smart ass teacher answered Rhinos and laughed hysterically. It turns out that not only do many mammals have baculums but Rhinos are in fact one of the few species besides humans to NOT have one.
Epic trolling.

You should of asked him why alligators need a tooth brush.
She would almost certainly have an equally smart ass answer to that question.
We got rhino skin
Our fearless messiah has silky, from the butt of Chinese worms, girly snowflake skin.
I am supposing that he doesn't want to hang out with us?
So sad.
"It's really hard to insult people that do nothing but sit around and insult each other everyday."
I may have to start trolling myself....nobody ever takes a jab at me anymore. I feel left out. Not one heartfelt 'fuck you' for months.
Quit feeling sorry for yourself you fuckin' lush.
Jesus.
...and fuck YOU!
do you watch a lot of TEDTalks, Erik?
Just saw that PA will "lose" $240M if the sequester goes through. I should say I just heard, as my eyes were still recovering from the previous story where they interviewed an old lady with like 4 teeth and a tongue ring.
Uhhh.....which four teeth?
*wincing and trying not to picture what the ring is for*
Oh noes, you didn't watch the local news, did you?
They told of told you when you moved here to never watch the local news, or feed Peggy Finnegan after midnight.
Did the talk about Malkin?
Malkin has taken over the C (concussion boy)for the pens now. What the fuck are these helmets made of? Marshmallows?
Crosby's lookin' flat out decent right now, and Kunitz ain't slackin' either. Koon-dog has been a player I've liked for awhile, not flashy or big scorer but he doesn't make too many mistakes. Craig Adams is like that too.
We got Mark Eaton back today, I always liked him. Solid D-man.
He used to pair up with Letang and I would think it was hilarious when the announcer said "Eatin' La Tang".
I like Neal.
Neal was a diamond in the rough and has really blossomed playing with Malkin. An excellent pick-up by Shero. Sometimes he seems to score at will.
I am really slacking this year on my hockey knowledge. I don't know shit about any other teams (haven't had time), but I'll try to bone up once playoffs start.
These are the times I'm glad to be a Blackhawks fan.
I used to have a thing for Julie Balogna. The weather guy who replaced her has a serious boy lover vibe.
They got rid of Jooly Bolony? NOOOOO!!
OT: bombing Guam with dead mice.
Really hope it doesn't tip the island over.
Uhhh...you might want to reword that, scientifically-illiterate reporterman.
It always comes back to Tylenol poisoning.
The worst side effect of oral narcotic-analgesic "dependency".

"OT: bombing Guam with dead mice.

Dunno what to say other than rabbits in Oz.
Somehow, somehow...
When keeping it real goes wrong, Chicom style.
How do you say "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" in Mandarin?
My father is Li Gang!
Ron O'neal is my biological father!
The shame is that a chinese "official" will probably face more punishment than an american "official" for that little tantrum.
Some needed to knock that motherfucker out.
Yeah you can see all the petty thugs standing around in their shiny uniforms not knowing what to do because they don't know what pull this guy has. At least he'll get some comeuppance there.
The only thing I admire about the Chinese Communist system is the occasional execution of high-level bureaucrats.
If only we could adopt that here, and do away with the 'occasional' part, then I think that is real progress.
Holy shit, I don't think I've seen this episode of Seinfeld.
Which one
"The Cartoon", the one where Kathy Griffin starts riffing on how mean Seinfeld is during her act and Elaine plagiarizes Ziggy in a cartoon for the New Yorker.
It really sucked.
How have you not seen that one
I know they don't play the Puerto Rican Day parade much anymore.
I think my 2 favorites are the one with the Schnitzer's rye and the one where Kramer and Newman get addicted to Kenny Rogers chicken.
Although, there are so many great ones.
Last night they had the Fur Coat. That's a classic, with George's giant wallet.
Lol, I have almost the entire series on DVD, I need to watch some of those again, it's been a while..
my fav episode is the two parter with Keith Hernandez
Oh yeah, I remember that one, where Jerry gets jealous when Keith starts dating Elaine.
That reminds me of the one where George is obsessed with the boyfriend of Elaine who likes rock climbing.
And, lol, the one with Puddy, where he paints his face for the game.
It's all coming back now... time for some Seinfeld...
It's tough, but my favorite is the one where the reporter writes a story about Jerry and George being a gay couple because they argue about washing fruit and whether George's shirt looks good or not.
I don't know why but this is pretty fucking funny.
I watched the original video. Those guys are Thai. Kon mee ham ying yai would be the best way to describe him.
On topic, but no link available.
The lefty Chron had an editorial cartoon of the H-o-Reps claiming the sky is falling from the sequester and yes, the image was Boehner.
He's sleazy enough, but somehow the WH (Obozo) claims of death and destruction never got a hint.
I tried to find it (it was today's cartoon), but couldn't. If some one wants to look, it'll be buried somewhere in http://www.sfgate.com/
And I'm sorry they get the clicks...
That commune/cult backstory on The Following is messed.
How is that? The advertising intrigued me, but I haven't put in the effort to watch it yet.
I'ts enjoyable enough to want to know where they will go next.
This is how I feel about both the Following and the Americans. Also James Purefoy is awesome so it has that.
In case you were wondering, Kellie Singh still has giant boobs.
Too fat for sarcasmic though.
So perfect for John.
sarcasmic trolls pro-ana web forums looking for dates. He never gets any though, because he demands they swallow and they're worried that the protein in his semem will make them fat.
Well, he needs to stop dating these stupid 'low fat diet' vegan bitches. Smart wimin folk know that protein doesn't make you fat. That's right, smart chicks swallow.
Fuck! Did I write "semem"? I need to go to bed. See all you muthafuggas later.
Don't worry, the type-o police have not arrived yet.
No, fuck you, cut spending.
and my axe!
They are going to, as soon as they crash into burning flames at the bottom of the cliff, and there is nothing left to spend.
I'll settle for, "Excuse me, don't raise spending".
I started reading the comments, really, but I didn't make it through all of 'em. I felt like I'd been transported back to junior high, notwithstanding the many good posts. There was just a bit too much of the name-calling for a Monday (I schedule my fights).
All of this self-serving palaver, of course, is by way of introduction, so let's be done with that nonsense and move on to some much more interesting nonsense, to wit, a simple question: Someone already corrected Dr. Gillespie on the Mitch McConnell thing, right?
I believe The Gee Man referred to McConnell as "House" Minority Leader. I do believe most Senators, past and present and doubtless in the future, would consider being called a House member something of an insult. (Hey, I know I would.)
I do believe most Senators, past and present and doubtless in the future, would consider being called a House member something of an insult.
I'm sure he'll get over it.
More importantly, do you have a good beef jerky recipe?
I'm sure he'll get over it.
Respect my authoritah! That's Senator, ummm, Senator Sir!, to you Butt Naked!
That's General Butt Naked to you. *pulls side arm*
We have laws against fightin nekked here in the USA!
And child soldiers too. Yes, I know.
When y'all want to actually win a war, I'm available.
With naked child soldiers?! No thankee.
There is never a bad day of the week to call someone a cunt and noone has said that yet so I'll go ahead and throw that in.
Thanks Apatheist, I meant to say 'Fuck off Cunt Troll!', but I guess I am not at the top of my game tonight...
All this name calling is why there's no libertarians women.
Yet, here we are.
Someone already corrected Dr. Gillespie on the Mitch McConnell thing, right?
It's bad form to address The Jacket's host without paying it the proper respect.
Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Gillespie is basically the Bluto of H&R. Don't stop him for small errors, he is on a roll.
I do believe most Senators, past and present and doubtless in the future, would consider being called a House member something of an insult. (Hey, I know I would.
Awww, isn't that so precious.
There was just a bit too much of the name-calling for a Monday (I schedule my fights).
Then, fuck off troll! Do you like that? There's more of it where that come from. Maybe you could try a feminist PC blog where you won't have your wittle feelings hurt?
haha if you don't understand that they are all the same, republicans and democrats, then you will continue to be shocked, SHOCKED! to find that they don't stand up for their "principles". haha
When icicles attack!
Jesus.
Bet those Canadians will change their views on gun control now. You'd need at least 30 rounds to take out that thing.
Wow, these people are not resourceful at all, don't they own hair dryers on poles?
I have a hunch that Lisa Tootoosis gets worried about things pretty easily.
Let's see if you're such a tuff gai when you're facing down an icicle like that.
Bet not.
A cold front just blew in here, it's 50F outside... brrrrrrrr.
It may go above freezing tomorrow.
That icicle is a goddamn GOP conspiracy. They aim to kill wimins and childins with these dangerous icicles! Congress needs to act now!
And it's because of global warming that we now have these dangerous icicles! Back when I was a child before right wing extremists took over the country, icicles were practically harmless!
Just the kind of language I'd expect from a mono-linguistic fat American. Icicles are the national tree of Canada and are a protected species.
If you Americans stopped touching your guns with you penises for a minute you might learn something about other countries.
Bet you don't even have a passport!
Matter o fact, I do have a passport, travel frequently to other countries, and also like touching my guns with my penis...., errr, wait, I mean... Goddamnit Reason! Where the fuck is that edit feature!
I have a hunch that Lisa Tootoosis gets worried about things pretty easily.
Lisa is just another shill for the anti-icicle lobby, ginning up hysteria amongst the proles. I bet that there will be icicle banning legislation on the table on the first day giant icicles start polling below ~42% favorability. I see right through her tissue of lies..
I hate wasting my talents where no one reads to appreciate them. I blame that extra click required to see 24/7 comments. Fix it, bitches.
I still think one of the greatest questions of today is, when gay marriages end in divorce, how does the courts know who to screw over?
I know it goes something like this:
If the gays are both men, fuck them both over.
If the gays are both women, don't fuck either of them over.
How does that work? I mean really, it can't be that simple, nothing government does, is.
Meh, there's precedent already.
It seems to have worked the other way around. Lesbian breakups are worse because there's often a biological and non-biological claim on kids. Courts have been relatively bad at enforcing joint parenting contracts, and when married the biological mother gets priority. You'll see it happening more with men as they hire surrogates and one of them donates sperm to the cause.
I heard about a case, not long ago, I think here, where an obviously clueless guy donated sperm for a lesbian couple, and when they split, he is the one who wound up paying child support.
So there may be precedent for either case, but I will be very surprised if it doesn't trend towards penis bashing.
Sorry, I know this is why there are no female libertarians.
Yes, but to be fair this was in Kansas or something where the 2nd mother wasn't given any legitimacy at all. The problem with that case was the disregard for the sperm donor's contract with the mothers. Though there was a certain lack of concern in the media for why the deadbeat mother who fled the state wasn't being asked to pay child support.
Courts have favored women in domestic and custody battles for years. The judge in that case was a fool (it's not the only case like that either).
On the bright side, we aren't England where men have had to resort to quirky civil disobedience to get attention for how badly they're treated by the family courts.
I think the problem with 24/7 topics is that they disappear down the page so damn fast. H&R topics come a bit slower, and so give more time for witty riposte.
just as David implied I'm amazed that any body can profit $7017 in four weeks on the computer. did you read this web site.
http://qr.net/j99V
when did David imply any such thing?
David's been leaning that way for years now. I wish he'd just come out and say it.
ha ha ha . nice obama's and she view.
"There's a goddamn large number of people out there (read: majority of voters) who have disaffiliated from either the Democrats or the Republicans who say they want a government that does less and costs less."
So essentially, there's a hidden but massive libertarian voting base who are ready to embrace the GOP if they just go full on libertarian. For some weird reason, this group just didn't feel like Gary Johnson or Ron Paul last year.
How many of the 90% of African American or 70% or Latino voters that vote democrat are closet libertarian voters? 20%? 30%? They secretly hate government and welfare spending, AND they love gay sex smoking legal dope? These people don't even have to vote GOP. If even 15% of minorities defected to the libertarians, that takes away from the left wing vote. The GOP will be thrilled.
The nation might be evolving on gay marriage, but there's at least 50% of all non white Americans will still favor traditional marriage. Lots of black people voted for Obama while disapproving of his support of gay marriage. Legal pot and defense spending has almost no pulse in the immigrant community. If you're not white, you don't know who GJ or RP is.
Voters reject the GOP because they think they're libertarian. Their rhetoric turns off non white voters, but that voting bloc isn't likely to warm up to individuals who does a better than articulating limited government ideas. Wake up, the nation does not want to be libertarian.
Mate, it's way too late to be picking a fight, there are maybe four people still paying attention and nobody is going to check in the morning.
Also XM at least one non-white guy voted GJ: Bitch, I voted for Gary Johnson!
I'll have you know that I am still paying attention and I dutifully ignored his comment.
You, me, SIV and Suthenboy = four. I would've ignored it too, but it was just too perfect for the "Bitch, I voted for Gary Johnson" clip.
Hey, I'm still here.
Or am I....
"Did you REALLY vote for him?"
"I can neither confirm nor deny that."
But the real fun part is when the hosts ask "who is Gary Johnson".
I'm here, waiting for Red Eye.
I'm on the west coast. It only looks like I posted something past 1 AM.
OK, I'd been reading Zerohedge for a few weeks but the 15 posts a day explaining why we're all going to die really does get on your nerves after a while, and this is probably it. Today they had a "guest post" listing the 20 signs the US economy is headed for another downturn, and one of them was Readers Digest going bankrupt. WTF?
After listening to all of the wailing coming from various places in the government, I realize that sequestration is just a handy scheme to excuse government incompetence. From now on, every time the government fucks up--in other words, about every day--they'll just squeal "...but it's because of those awful draconian budget cuts! We're starved for resources!"
Kasich is a Fox News establishment GOP republican.
According to Pew Research, Republican voters don't want to cut spending. So why should Republican politicians want to cut spending?
So who talks up all that crazy smack man?
