White House Gun Policy: Like Ignorant Emotional Appeals From 8-Year-olds
It really has come to this: The president and vice president of the United States are trotting out the emotional appeals of ill-informed elementary school children in order to sell the administration's emotional, ill-informed policy response to the Sandy Hook school shooting. Is there a word that combines embarrassing, grotesque, unseemly, and kind of cute? Well, that would describe this campaign.
Lil' Hinna, for example, opines that "if there are no guns on the street, no one could get hurt" (just like in England!), and concludes her White House-posted video address with the plaintive, elementary school-style plea for "No guns, no guns, no guns, no guns":
Grant here thinks that people can own machine guns, and that "there should be a good reason for people to get a gun":
"P.S.–I know you're doing your best." Adorbs!
Meanwhile, Julia thinks "the only things" guns do are "harm or kill," and they should "only be used in the most horrible event where others will get hurt if they are not." She is also no fan of the Constitution's separation of powers and 2nd Amendment--"I know that laws have to be passed by Congress, but I beg you to try very hard to make guns not allowed":
It is bad enough to make hasty and inappropriate legislation in the name of dead kids. It is bad enough to constantly formulate and sell policy via individual anecdote. It's bad enough to draft pre-Tween children for the purposes of political propaganda. But all three at once? The word that comes to mind is infantile.

How did you get Warty's OKCupid introduction. Welch? Have you been trolling OKCupid? Does Mrs. Le Welch know about this?
add in the fact he's posting child abuse material in Hit & Run, and it looks like she's got some serious grounds for divorce
He works for Reason, so she certainly didn't marry him for his bumazhnik.
He's not paid a king's ransom? What cheap bastards the Koch brothers are
That is just what they want you to think. We know they swim in money pools, ala Scrooge McDuck.
i note that Reason us only showing us the drab exterior of its new home, and not the interior. Why be so coy about the money pools and solid gold crappers?
Meh, one gets for what one pays.-D Though I do enjoy Welch's wit and wisdom. Maybe he needs to "polish their monocles harder" for a raise...
Or shitcan the incredibly ineffectual and impotent Riggs and pay Welch the difference.
Nah; they need to bring back Lucy.
No, they should send Sullum and Doherty on a Hunter Thompson style search to find the soul of America in the Age of Obama.
Lucy!
Welch has some 'splainin' to do!
my friend's mom makes $80 an hour on the laptop. She has been without a job for 10 months but last month her income was $13238 just working on the laptop for a few hours. Read more here... http://www.ace60.com
Your friend's mom is blowing half the men in the neighborhood for $5 a pop. Now why don't you go join her and fuck off with your low-rent advertisement.
As I keep pointing out, nothing is beyond the pale for these fuckers.
Sickening.
They're almost beyond parody.
It really seems like a bad skit from a comedy show. A few years ago when Obama promised to cure cancer during the state of the union address, someone pointed out an old joke about a politician promising people anything and everything, even something as ludicrous as curing cancer. Obama is a joke, but the joke is truly on us for electing and then reelecting him.
on us for electing and then reelecting him.
Who is this "us" you refer too? I certainly did not elect or re-elect him.
The royal us!
The royal us!
Fits right in with his view of himself, that is for sure.
hah! Interesting, I just had this conversation with my 15 year old last night. He was sure 'we' had noone to blame but ourselves for the consequences of 'O'.
He was sure 'we' had noone to blame
Sure we could blame Peter Noone.
ah, that may explain why my son said 'Dad, you just don't get it'
"According to Stephanie Cutter, President Obama's former deputy campaign manager on Ed Schultz's MSNBC program:
President Obama's network across this country, grassroots individuals, who organize, volunteered with their time to get the president reelected are much more powerful than the NRA lobby. And I think that you can expect to see that network activated, very soon. And for good reason."
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-G.....t-campaign
Ooooo - stop, I'm scared
To be fair, this network got Obama re?lected.
True, but this network is also represented by congresspeople who value their jobs much more than the opinions of some grassroots activists.
Hmm, but which group is more likely to be armed?
Homeland Security?
Sadly, yes. (and better every day)
To be fair, this network got Obama re?lected.
No, calling Mitt Romney a woman-hating redneck klan member got Obama reelected. Not sure how he's going to sell that assault weapons are going to lynch mexicans and queers.
"Not sure how he's going to sell that assault weapons are going to lynch mexicans and queers."
He'll just sell that they'll slaughter innocent children in droves, and that his proposed legislation will save lives. Even easier sell, given the low capactity for logic that most people seem to possess.
If "Assault Weapons" were banned, then Fast-n-Furious would have never occurred... So FnF was the NRA's fault... BRILLIANT!
QED
I've been overly paranoid, but I'm kind of assuming there will be an update to the campaign app that lets users report bitter clingers and such.
Maybe add in a way to get instructions locally, so the mob can be directed to have two minute hates at non-believers.
"I've been overly paranoid, but I'm kind of assuming there will be an update to the campaign app that lets users report bitter clingers and such."
Or just have the media publish a map of the location of gun owners. That would never happen though, I'm sure.
Another vile insinuation by the President and his ilk. When Democrats are for something, in this case gun control, its because they love the country and are supported by grassroots individuals across America. When someone disagrees with them, its because they are funded and controlled by a vast corporate interest.
^^This times 1000
That's what they actually believe.
They REALLY BELIEVE they they represent the true people. And that only evil corporations and brainwashed morons are opposed to them.
President Obama's network across this country, grassroots individuals, who organize, volunteered with their time to get the president reelected are much more powerful than the NRA lobby.
Which is why the whole campaign kept repeating, "Mr. Obama respects the Second Amendment and won't take away your guns."
and the country just circles down the (toilet) drain at an increasing pace.
Two white kids and some kind of Ay-rab? Is this your idea of diversity, Mr. President? Charlie Rangel is embarrassed as hell.
So burn that flag if you must! But before you do, you'd better burn a few
other things! You'd better burn your shirt and your pants! Be sure to
burn your TV and car! Oh yeah, and don't forget to burn your house!
Because none of those things would exist without six red stripes, seven
red stripes, and a helluva lot of stars!!
Wait, the flag has thirteen red stripes now?
Forget it, he's rolling.
He didn't say it was the US flag. Also, Red and red are different, but the difference is in the inflection, which is why you don't pick up on it here.
Makes sense when you say it like taht. lol
I had six Red Stripes last night.
I would tear down every law in this country to get the Devil, sir.
That is absolutely one of the best dramatic exchanges ever committed to celluloid.
My back is spineless. My belly is yella. I am the American Obama voter.
And you wonder why people call you racists? I thought a lot more of all of you before this discussion became the equivalent of a fat man's pants: no longer big enough to cover your least attractive body parts (to put it as politely as I can).
And while we're at it, bozo, if you want to know what courage is, you should have tried the civil rights movement. It makes your tea parties look like, well, tea parties.
Look, everyone, we have a new troll!
Opposition is the new racism.

..."And while we're at it, bozo, if you want to know what courage is, you should have tried the civil rights movement."...
Oh, oh, Mr. Sensitive! Please tell us about it!
None of us here know anything about it!!!
twit....
Soviet propaganda in the 21st century.
I guess Obama took the insult "your argument sounds like it came from a seven year old!" rather literally huh?
It's like he went "Infantile? I'll show you fucking infantile!!!"
Don't bother. You just have.
?
This a new troll that is not on reasonable's troll list?
"If we could ban the Sun then there would be no global warming."
Well you heard the kid, ban the SUN!
what sort of monster would ban the Sun?
the sort of monster that cares about children, do you really want children to fry in the sun?
Or be exposed to Anglosphere tabloids!
Monty Burns?
Can someone remind me again why I'm supposed to take these people seriously or see their authority as legitimate?
Can someone remind me again why I'm supposed to take these people seriously or see their authority as legitimate?
Wait, we are supposed to take these people seriously? When did that happen? And they lost their legitimacy around the time they passed the Alien and Sedition Act.
Because they pass laws that can put you in jail or impoverish you?
They are your betters. That is all.
Because they genuinely care. That is enough.
Fuck you, that's why? That seems to be the standard rationale.
Can someone remind me again why I'm supposed to take these people seriously or see their authority as legitimate?
They can kill you and face no consequences.
They can kill you and face no consequences.
That may be a reason to take them seriously; but it does not give them any legitimacy.
Oh yeah. I think it's this one.
ding ding.
?their authority as legitimate??
Their legitimacy is not really the point as long as you don?t lift a finger when they come to seize your neighbour?s guns.
I suspect that most gun owners distrust their neighbours even more than they do the government so resistance to government actions will be limited complaints like this. The gun owner?s impotence doesn?t spring from his lack of weaponry, but from the isolation and fear that drove him to acquire the weapons in the first place.
Calls for adult conversation on gun control, skips deliberative legislation in favor of knee jerk executive orders, then trots out children.
SOP for this sham of an administration.
Ripley: Hudson! This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no training.
[to Newt]
Ripley: Right?
[Newt apes a salute]
Hudson: Why don't you put her in charge?
Bring in the dancing lobsters!
Nobody's "skipping" deliberative legislation. Just like nobody's coming for your guns. The president you hate so much grandfathered in every weapon you already own.
Call me and make the same arguments, after it's your kid that's killed. Then YOU'LL have "legitimacy"
ah, the tried and true "if you're not a then you can't speak on these issues" game.
oops, forgot the squirrels eat angle brackets.
try: "if you're not a (insert member of victimization group here) then you can't speak on these issues"
Well, I happen to think people who don't own guns and love them can't possibly understand why we fear encroachment on our 2nd amendment rights.
You do have to experience some things in life to fully understand them. But that works on both sides of the argument.
But,before we do so much squealing, it might be worth actually reading those policy proposals. Cuz there ain't one word about take even one gun from us. That's wayyyyy better than I was expecting.
Yeah, thank God nobody is proposing banning guns, you stupid twat.
Should we thank him for proposing to grandfather existing weapons in while banning the rest?
How about he just doesn't ban anything and we'll like him even more?
Every gun owner has skin in this game since your side made the issue about guns.
If you'd read closer, you'd see we happen to be on SAME side. But I'm not going to be a sheep and just repeat whatever Rush or Fox are saying at moment.
I like to read stuff for myself and reach own opinion. And, all I'm saying is, thank God it wasn't as bad as we feared. Maybe if we don't rant our heads off about everything, they won't hate us enough to really
start taking our guns away.
Do we really want to have as low an approval rating as Congress? Not me, baby. I like being liked by the guys who make all the rules.
I like being liked by the guys who make all the rules.
So you're a popularity chasing cunt with no principles? Well I'll be damned...
"they won't hate us enough to really
start taking our guns away."
Really? How bout I live my life the way I please and give 0 fucks about if they hate me or not?
I have a family member who was murdered by a fire can we ban fires now please, nobody needs fire anymore to cook or heat or anything now that we have electricity. Oh wait he started the fire by squirting lighter fluid on the electric heater lets ban fire, lighter fluid and electricity. You'll have to heat your house by sun light for now on.
Sun light causes cancer though, haven't you heard?
In a righteous world the parents would be publicly ridiculed and shamed for allowing their kids to be exploited in this way. In the real world, I'm sure they feel nothing but ecstasy when following the orders of Dear Leader (He talked to me! *swoon*) and are congratulated by their equally emotionally run friends.
Considering what they've been through, I think we can give the parents a pass.
What's shitty is team Obama looked at them and decided the families were ripe for exploitation.
"Considering what they've been through, I think we can give the parents a pass."
These children aren't from Sandy Hook. What exactly have their parents been through?
What exactly have their parents been through?
Upper-middle class ennui?
What did the parents of these kids go through?
Ok I concede.
And yet the NRA's ads using Obama's kids to point out his hypocrisy are beyond the pale.
EXACTLY.
The media is *only* focusing on the mention of the president's children in that ad. Not the fact that he's literally standing on a goddamn stage with tons of kids, trying to ram through his bullshit, feel-good but useless legislation.
And they sure as hell don't address the idea that if you're in govt, it's all well and good for you to be armed to the teeth or protected by a phalanx of soldiers. Oh, but not you little people. We know what's best for you.
Jesus Christ, could you be any more disgusting?
Or do you really not give a shit about your own kids.
Because, if you do, you know crap, until you lose one of them.
I'm guessing this pud is itching to say something.
I do hope your kid is dead. I don't want to see you trolls multiply...
That's COLD!
But true...
Don't you worry, little Johnny. Uncle Barry's working overtime go ensure that only the bad men who want to hurt you have guns. Oh and don't even think about not eating your ration of First Wookie approved gruel, or he'll dronestrike your ass.

FYI What PT Barnum actually said was: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

Actually, no, it was HL Mencken who said "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."
Of course, your posts so far have clearly identified you as an ignoramus.
Mencken would have had fun with you, I'm sure.
Americans won't fall for this shameless manipulation, will we? Americans are better than that, aren't we? Americans look at facts not feelings, don't we?
What rock have you been living under the past 5 years or so? The answere are yes, no, and no.
Well, to be fair pre-teens are probably the only group that the administration can convince that they know what they're doing.
Up next: Federal Pony subsidies.
Does the Department of Education still sponsor closed captioning? I could see them sponsoring captioning for My Little Pony.
Now we're going after the hearing-impaired. Just who haven't you insulted yet. Let me think... oh yeah, the DUTCH. But I"m very confident you can come up with something for those clog-wearing Gouda heads.
Dutch ain't much. Or so I've heard.
It seems that the only time Democrats won't use children as a back drop is at a ProChoice event.
Except for the preteens who desperately need abortions without parental consent, that is.
Right! And it's so much less manipulative when pro-lifers use dead fetuses in their ads!
...huh?
99%+ of abortions end up with a dead fetus. 99.9%+ of guns have not killed a child.
It's "manipulative" to use something that represents less that 0.1% of the outcomes as a rallying cry to ban something.
It's not manipulative to use something that represents 99%+ of the outcomes as a rallying cry to ban something.
The more you know. *Animated shooting star thing*
"US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Friday militants who attacked the United States and its citizens will hunted down, in the first comments by a senior US officials on the events in Algeria."
See, the only legitimate use of force is for hunting.
See, the only legitimate use of force is for hunting
So teh terrorizmz are animals?
I think you mean target practice.
I am so disgusted these children even know about what happened let alone that they're being exploited to forward President Obama's political goals. Why was little Hinna even watching the news all day? Jesus, she's 8-years-old, give her a chance to not have to worry about crazy people. She should not be worrying about this, it will not ever happen to her or her school. I am utterly repulsed by this.
She wasn't necessarily watching the news. It's entirely possible her elementary school teacher told the students about Sandy Hook a couple of weeks ago and asked/told them to write letters to the president criticizing guns as a writing assignment.
^THIS^ These kids probably have never had a truly original thought in their lives. They're just regurgitating the bullshit their idiot parents and proggeso-tard teachers have fed them all their lives. Kind of sad, really.
True story: I recently went to visit the local cosmotarian public school where my daughter will go next year, and the "science" class was busy working on a letter/picture campaign to pressure lawmakers to "save the wolves." I took a pic of a sad little wolf drawing with the thought balloon "help"....
Ohh, poor little wolves.
Not all children regurgitate. Some independently develop reason, and become a huge "hit" with their teachers.
Yeah, got me detention on several occasions.
I've been supportive of the president on a number of other issues, but there's no way I can look at this and reach any conclusion other than yours. To make matters worse, the president's example is enabling other activists to do much the same.
Here's something else you just have to see to believe:
http://blogs.ajc.com/political.....gun-group/
Holy cow, thanks.
As long as that number is zero we're cool.
The progs are pushing for complete ideological purity of the Democratic Party, I see.
isn't it amazing how the party of inclusions is so exclusive these days
Ironically, a talk show host I was listening to yesterday was all horrified that the NRA would drag the Obama girls into an ad by mentioning they attended a school where armed security (other than the secret service) protected the children of the privileged. Apparently only Our Glorious Leader is allowed to dance on the graves of dead kindergarteners.
To be fair, he isn't dancing:
He is using the skulls of dead children as a step stool to climb aboard the favorite hobby horse of the progressives
Hey dufus! There ARE NO ARMED GUARDS at the Obama kids' school. Check it out for yourself if you actually want to deal with facts for a change.
BTW - let's put YOUR kids in ad for the whole damn nation. I'd be really interested in how much you like it. And don't tempt me, cuz I'm just the one to do it.
Why look what we have here! None other than a self-proclaimed member of the lib-fascist media trolling these comments!
I'm not "liberal," let alone, God forbid, "fascist." Nor, am I "self proclaimed. I quit the network after 10 years. I still love the medium of television. But hate the message of TV news. Am avid supporter of the 2nd amendment (though you've assumed the opposite) I I don't like the gov't screwing with any of our constitutional rights, for that matter.
If you loved Mitt Romney, more power to you. I couldn't stand him & I don't think he exactly "helped" the party. You'd have to be wearing blinders to think we're in a "good place" right now.
We used to be incredible at getting whatever we needed from dems. Reagan was a fantastic diplomat. It's why even liberals loved him.
These days, people hate us... not because of you or me, but the folks in Congress... the ones who working a mere 32 weeks a yr & threatened to tank the whole economy, just to win a pissing match with dems.
Call me old-fashioned. (I certainly prefer it to "troll" or "fascist.") I also prefer the days when, no matter which moron was in the White House, we at least showed respect for the office, itself.
So, no. I'm not proud of the nastiness, or the name-calling. Obama may be the worst president in history. But he IS the president. That used to mean something to real patriots. If we keep trashing the office, it won't mean squat when one of our own gets elected. That's just me. You're welcome to your own opinion.
You might have better luck peddling your faux-"patriot" horseshit at RedState.com or something. Reason is a libertarian website. You need to at least target your troll persona to each different outfit.
Fuck Obama, Fuck the presidency. The President is not Princeps, nor Caesar, nor Augustus. He is not King, or Emperor or dominus or anything else. Considering Obama took an oath of office to preserve and defend the constitution, and has spent four years subverting and ignoring that same document, I have precious little respect for him or the office he holds. You are on the wrong site if you think blind appeals to authority will win you fans here.
Corollary: Fuck you, cut spending!
Couldn't care less about Mitt Romney, he was just "feathering the throttle" to Obama's "pedal to the metal". The car's already off the cliff and falling, what's it matter how much gas we burn on the way down?
I agree on Reagan. He was pretty good at trying to get the gov't to at least "tap the breaks" (to keep this overtrodden analogy going). However, I again point out that this country has drifted so far away from the concepts of personal sovereignty, individual liberty, and federalism that it doesn't matter.
Reagan served to give conservatives (myself included) the warm fuzzies, because he said and did a lot of the right things, but with the gov't so far gone it doesn't matter all that much. He just extended the deadline by a decade or two.
I place a large portion of the blame on media and education. If we weren't constantly being assailed for being racist, bigoted, homophobic, classist, and about to roll granny off a cliff, it would be easier to have a conversation with people of differing points of view.
I'll respect the President when he respects the office and the oath he swore to uphold to the Constitution.

"Hey dufus! There ARE NO ARMED GUARDS at the Obama kids' school."
You mean to tell me that there is no Secret Service personnel assigned to the schools where they go?
I find that very hard to believe.
Last I read was there were 11 armed security at Obama's kids school, but they were not Secret Service; rich people's private school.
I am seriously convinced that two months from now there will be another super tradgedy to push the final yard on legislation. And it will probably be somewhere like an Ikea just so they don't feed the 'conspiracy' trolls. These clowns seriously have me molding tin foil.
Considering most of his supporters have the emotional maturity and critical thinking skills of elementary school children I can't say I'm surprised.
How about pure evil? I mean using these kids - who probably have no idea what they're really saying anyway and are just mouthing the words their braindead proggie parents and teachers put in their heads - in a cynical ploy to push a political agenda can only be described as such. These fuckers have no shame. None whatsoever.
Low information pre-voters are so cute before they punch their first ballot.
YOU are questioning the "thinking skills" of Obama supporters.
Try this one on for size: 97% of the Nobel Prize Winners and Rhodes Scholars in America voted Democratic in '08 & '12.
Gee, I just figured out why you hate actual facts so much. NONE of them support your lunacy.
You mean the same organization that awarded the peace prize to the Big O for what he might do in the future?
Credible group, that.
This. They awarded a peace prize to a president who would go on to head an administration that has killed hundreds to thousands (depending on source) of INNOCENT people and thousands more probably not-innocent drone attacks.
Yep. When I think peace prize recipient, I think of a person who heads up a military that loves drone strikes on innocent people.
HEY LIBERTARIANS, IF YOU'RE SO SMART, HOW COME EVERYONE I AGREE WITH AGREES ME? HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Don't forget Paully Krugnutts and his support of the trillion dollar pocket sized coin.
And why aren't they in school. Think of all the edgemacation they're missing out on. Those bananas aren't going to put condoms on themselves.
The day of the shooting, I went to pick up my kids at school (in a different state altogether from Sandy Hook) and found police cars at the middle and elementary schools. For days after the shooting there was media coverage of cops volunteering at schools to help the kids feel safe....but an armed guard to patrol schools is off the table? It seems we automatically responded with what made kids and parents feel safer without executive orders and political posturing.
I never understood why anyone assumes that "armed guards in schools" would be selected from a more qualified talent pool, or trained any better than TSA agents.
The last thing I want in my kid's school is armed government agents. Just imagine what these guys would fill the 99.99999999999999999% of their time with when they weren't dealing with violent psychopaths.
You mean violent psychopaths other than their coworkers who are there because they failed the psych exam to become cops, right?
What PLANET are you living on?? The president's executive orders INCLUDE more armed security at schools.
Just for a novelty, could you, maybe, just once in a lifetime, deal with a genuine fact, perhaps???
The planet where this wasn't fact until almost 6 hrs after I posted my earlier comment.
Ah, holy hell. He may be a troll, but he is also correct and I am having a severe blonde moment. There, you have it, I am mistaken. Let the public flogging commence!!

I'm no troll. And you deserve no flogging. Everybody makes mistakes. If I had even nickel for each one of mine, I'd have a much better "retirement plan." At the moment, it's winning the lottery.

What's depressing is that so many people are stupid enough to fall for this.
Anyone else notice how Lance Armstrong is now a bigger story then the guns? Apparently CNN and NBC think the Obamanation has fixed the problem already.
I say doing nothing of substance fixed the problem of gun control in the media very well.
"The president and vice president of the United States are trotting out the emotional appeals of ill-informed elementary school children in order to sell the administration's emotional, ill-informed policy response to the Sandy Hook school shooting."
A better match is hard to imagine; Obozo's the passive-agressive teacher's pet/bully and he's right in his element among grammar-school kids.

Dear Mr Block Obawma,
That man over by the camera said to look up Fast and Furious. Is that the name of the wonderful new program you have to keep us safe?
I seem to recall when the liberal assclowns went batshit whenever Bush used Iraqi veterans to sell his policy there. But kids are ok?
This was beyond the pale and sickened me to the core. It's so fucking stupid. For a guy who's supposed to be above everyone else as some sort of intellectual zen master, he sure knows how to play cynic with the best of them degrading the Office with cheap tricks and appeals to emotions.

"I seem to recall when the liberal assclowns went batshit whenever Bush used Iraqi veterans to sell his policy there. But kids are ok?"
Yeah, 'cause it's Obozo and his cause is JUST!
But you knew that horseshit, as does anyone other than the Obozo cultists.
Your memory is a bit rusty. What they complained about wasn't the use of active service men or veterans. It was over his gigantic "mission accomplished" sign.
There was a whole heck of a lot of fighting still left to do at that point.
Here's what I don't get - truly. I don't call any of you "assclowns" or anything even remotely so offensive.
("Dufus" is about as low as I go."
How are we going to get anywhere in this country if we can't at least be respectful to one another, regardless of our political differences? We never used to be this hostile in America. And I don't want to be that hostile now.
It's easy to like people who think differently than you do, To quote the old musical, Brigadoon "I like you very much, really! I just don't like anything you say."
I would so welcome a calm, reasoned discussion of stuff. There's stuff I'd like to know and understand about things you're either so passionate or, on the other side, worried about. Doesn't look like it's likely to happen here. I think that's a loss for both of us.
Why can't people who disagree with me just become civilized, respectable human beings with a moral conscience by adopting all of my positions? Why? Why?
Also, TEH CHILDRUNZ!
Yes, and let's completely ignore the fact that W had nothing to do with the mission accomplished banner. It was placed there by the crew of the carrier to signify that their carrier group had indeed accomplished the mission assigned to them.
Get your facts straight before trying to start an argument.
you forgot about taeja, the kid with the cool name. But yes this is a ridiculous thing for the president to do, how shameful.
At the time of our revolution, most volunteers were able to fire a musket shot every 15 seconds for about 4 minutes before fouling the barrel. Not a 30 round clip or a 100 round barrel as fast as he can pull the trigger, one round every 15 seconds. No individuals possessed the only higher capacity weapons of the day, cannon. A "well regulated militia" within the meaning of the 2nd Amendment contemplated a community of primarily smooth bore muskets and some early single shot rifles loaded in the same manner, no single one of which could inflict mass harm. Those who scoff at the idea one of the reasons for 2nd Amendment was protection against tyranny are wrong, the Bill of Rights is all about protections from tyranny in every form, but those who ignore the "well regulated" proviso of the amendment are equally wrong. There were no laws prohibiting felons from possessing firearms any more than there were laws regulating automatic weapons, but there are now, and they entirely comport with the 2nd Amendment. Sensible firearms regulation is not a constitutional issue, it's a democratic one, and it's time for the majority to stand up to the bullies. President Obama has never said a single word, or committed a single act, against the 2nd Amendment, but he is on a quest now, supported by most Americans and most gun owners, to satisfy the "well regulated" component of our right to bear arms, the right to be protected from unregulated firearms.
"No individuals possessed the only higher capacity weapons of the day, cannon"
This is false.
I also see you have absolutely no idea what "well-regulated" meant in the 18th century and in the context of the second amendment. Hint: It didn't mean well-controlled by the government. Also, at no point does the Second Amendment say that the right to bear arms is dependent on being in a militia. The phrase merely explains the general reason for giving the people the right to bear arms

"President Obama has never said a single word, or committed a single act, against the 2nd Amendment, but he is on a quest now, supported by most Americans and most gun owners, to satisfy the "well regulated" component of our right to bear arms, the right to be protected from unregulated firearms."
So, how did you find out that "most Americans and most gun owners" support your fantasy?
Can you show me the part of the constitution that says our right to bear arms can be 'well regulated'?
If modern firearms aren't protected by the 2nd Amendment, you can credibly say that modern publishing methods (like the internet) aren't protected by the 1st, and electronic communication isn't protected by the 4th.
Fuck off slaver.
Believe it or not, some lefty ignoramus made *exactly* that claim re: those horrible violent games!!!!
Seriously, on the pages of the dead-tree issue of a supposed "newspaper", the SF Chron. And, sure enough, they printed it seemingly without embarrassment.
PART TWO
We call it "leadership." President Lincoln was particularly good at it. (Perhaps the word "emancipation" will ring a bell for you?) In any event, it wouldn't make much sense for them to construct their own platform, if they played no role whatsoever in the legislative process. (And it would be especially dumb of the founders to give him veto power!)
It was also gutsy to be so openly contemptuous of Mr. Obama's "emotional response" to Sandy Hook? since it reveals so much more about the author, than it does his subject. My hope is it reflects a lack of understanding of human psychology, in general, as opposed to your own, specific psychology. The ability to respond, devoid of emotion, to tragedies like the slaughter of innocent little children is an almost perfect fit with the official/DSM definition of "sociopathy."
Finally, I'd be remiss if I failed to express my gratitude for providing some comic relief for your readers. Referring to elementary schoolchildren as "ill-informed" was hilarious ? and almost as damning as exposing NRA members for being "pro-gun." As Mary Todd Lincoln might say, "Thanks to that, Mr. Booth, I otherwise enjoyed the play.
You call it "leadership." I call it creeping fascism and totalitarianism.
I must've missed the part of the Constitution where the President was part of the legislative branch.
Ah, and as a trained psychologist with many years of experience, you're able to diagnose people based on one article on the internet.
How about this. The discussion of policy change due to a tragedy has absolutely nothing to do with the personal grieving process because of the tragedy.
Moreover, the fact that you're unable to make a distinction between emotions of the people v. the emotional propaganda of the government; show some sort of psychological predisposition to a connection between government and parenting. Did your daddy not love you enough? Was mommy a little too friendly with Mr. Vodka Bottle?
And yet you're the one defending policy action being taken under the premise of "answering children's scared letters to the President".

"PART TWO

Uh, you wander on to this site and I'm sure you're just certain you'll impress everyone with your knowledge and erudition. You are just such an important and smart guy, right? You ooze, well, something or other. And you prove it right there.
Lincoln did accomplish emancipation, and no one but the house Nazi "slappy" argues that is bad; it corrected one of the worst ever governmental abuses; using coercion to deny self-ownership of an entire *LIFE*. Despicable.
Regardless, the guy and his methods are held in contempt here. And you, filled with your self importance and 'common knowledge' didn't even imagine anyone could find Lincoln other than a US hero, right?
Hint: Wilson or FDR may be worse, but he's right there in the running for the bottom. For very good reason; the proof is left to the student.
You know, you'll have to search your own heart for where all that anger's coming from. I've never claimed here (or anywhere else for that matter) that I'm "better" than anyone.. Yeah, I got a good education. I worked my way through college and law school, by sweating 40 hours a week at work, over and above my classes.
So, sorry, I don't "try to sound educated." And, if I do sound that way, I earned it.
As for Lincoln, I used him here because, at least he was Republican. I seriously doubted anyone wanted to hear about FDR here. And, regardless of any other flaws, freeing the slaves in America was a huge legislative accomplishment -- and that happened to be the issue we were debating at the moment (whether presidents played any role in legislation in America.)
You know, snobbery and erudition works both ways. The assumptions you made about me - and contempt you dumped all over your comments is at least as rude as anything you accused me of. The difference is, you actually did express contempt for my education. I've never said a mean word about anyone's lack of it.
freeing the slaves in America was a huge legislative accomplishment
Too bad the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't a legislative action. At what college did you study law? I want to make sure I never hire a lawyer educated there.
Also, libertarian != Republican. If you're going to concern troll, at least make sure you've got the right sock puppet matched up to the right ideological group.
You mistake anger for impatience with trollery.
Nah, being a condescending troll doesn't imply that at all.
Congrats? There are a lot of us here that have college credentials, worked through college and are held in esteem in our professions.
You don't understand. He was using a euphemism. He meant that you come off as a condescending know-it-all jackass. Trying to sound educated by being a jerk is not the same as sounding like you're educated.

I'll bet your mom is just thrilled; Me, I really don't care.

"you actually did express contempt for my education. I've never said a mean word about anyone's lack of it."
So reading isn't one of your skills, either? I posted not a word about your education. Perhaps "erudition" confused you?

So we have Mr Sensitive, accusing others of anger, posting bullshit and giving us his CV. Terrific; I've been waiting all of a minute or two for such a treat.
Part One
As one who is as passionate about irony as t honesty, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your column. You masterfully reproduced, in your own writing, each of the weaknesses you assigned to the President. You accuse him of "drafting pre-Tween children for the purposes of political propaganda."And then use photos of the same kids in your own column! I'm just a little confused, however, by your condemnation of the President for "drafting" the children who joined him at the White House? since these are children who, first, wrote to him on their own initiative. (BTW: I'm also not sure what you mean when express loathing for "using personal anecdotes to solve policy issues." Could you give me an example from your own experience?)
It took real guts for you as a writer to throw caution to the wind, along with taste, timing and basic human decency. But, how else could you have ridiculed little children, petrified of returning to school, after those 20 kids were massacred in Newtown? It's time for those babies to man-up already! Let's just bitch-slap them, shall we?
I hope you won't mind my saying so, but, when it comes to separation of powers, I think this time you're the one who's confused. Separation of powers has never prohibited Presidents from working to ensure passage of laws in which they're deeply invested. I can't speak for yours, but it happens quite a bit on my planet.
Obama's laws are not going to save any children. Quit hiding your political agenda behind dead kids you despicable piece of shit.
Showing evidence of an action =/= performing an action!
Sure, cherry picking letters from children in order to create momentum for a bunch of executive orders on gun control. That's a great example! I really feel sorry for you having been dropped on your head so many times as a child.
What a crappy false dichotomy. Either those children are so precious that we need to destroy the Constitution to keep them "safe" or we should abuse them for being wimps. Definitely no ground for individual compassion, proper parenting, and leaving the 2nd Amendment alone.
Ah yes, i do remember when Congress voted on Obama's executive orders. That was a GREAT day!
C-
Terrible rhetoric, terrible style. I'd flunk you.

"As one who is as passionate about irony as t honesty,"
If a restaurant *is* world-famous, there is no need to state that on the sign.
And as the rest of your post indicates, you *ain't* passionate about honesty, at least. Irony, well, if you start from a stupid enough point, reality is ironic. You seem to start from a point near there.
Yeah, sure they did. There the were the little dears in their rooms and the put pen to paper and wrote to the Great One.
Holy Shit, I believe you might really believe this.
No, the little shits were told by their NEA member teachers to write this crap. On their own they would never have come up with it. They're too young to come up with any sort of ideas about a complex situation like this. They barely have any idea what it even means to die.
"No, the little shits were told by their NEA member teachers to write this crap..."
I'm sure some 'progessive' mommies were involved also, convincing their precious little snowflakes that writing a letter to THE PRESIDENT was just, oh, such a wonderful thing to do!
And it's a good bet most of the prose came directly from the oh, so caring mommy.
I am FED UP with using kids as TV props to push a stinking political agenda!
So tough guy Obama has kiddie human shields.
No big surprise there.........
You are 38 times more likely to be a victim of a gun homicide than to commit a justifiable homicide protecting you and your family.
A person in your household is 2.8 times as likely of a gun accident than to commit a justifiable homicide protecting you and your family.
fbi.gov
And as well all know, guns have no purpose whatsoever unless you use them to kill someone. Look up the word "brandish."

"You are 38 times more likely to be a victim of a gun homicide than to commit a justifiable homicide protecting you and your family.
A person in your household is 2.8 times as likely of a gun accident than to commit a justifiable homicide protecting you and your family."
And you are 53.5 times more likely to be hit by a black car than to dive off of the 4 meter board!
I'll bet you had some silly bleef that those numbers you posted had informational content. Are you a lefty by any chance?
As long as would be gun murderers are at all selective about attempting to murder, killers should be more likely to kill than be killed. They prefer to target the weak and defenseless. Therefore, it should be more statistically likely to be a victim, regardless of how one is armed.
Gun safety is largely under my control. By educating myself and using good practices, I can be much safer than the average person.
However, if a murderer enters my house and I am not armed, I am fairly certain that he's in charge for at least 10 minutes or so, and there's very little I can do to mitigate that. I don't like those odds.
Once again:
?The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
?Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
?Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171
?The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million)
?The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
?The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188
Not sure of the validity.
That data would take a *whole* lot of context to make it any better than NorEastern's data-surfing.
As far back as '89 & '90, gun deaths for those two years topped 5500. It's the #1 cause of death today among black teens; #2 for white teens, just after car crashes.
More pre-schoolers die in 1 year from guns, than do law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
And, most striking, more American children die in a year from guns, than the total number of deaths in our military in all the years we've fought in Iraq & Afghanistan.
In fact, of all the gun deaths in all industrialized
nations in the world, 87% are in America (more than all the other nations, combined.)
You have to go all the way up to 60, before more people die from illness than guns here. I'm an ardent supporter of the 2nd amendment, but statistics are statistics. We're never going to win this argument by talking about how "few" people are killed by guns in America.
I know you're every bit as ardent as I am - I truly don' mean to offend you, but it's best not to rely on the stats from the NRA. It's a weak argument to begin with, and let's just say the NRA "manipulates" the statistics more than a little.
gun deaths for those two years topped 5500.
The reference was to accidental gun deaths. Some data sets are subsets of larger data sets. Or, alternatively, learn to read.
more American children die in a year from guns, than the total number of deaths in our military in all the years we've fought in Iraq & Afghanistan.
Uhhhh, how 'bout fucking no, you lying piece of shit? Total military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan combined: 6,664. Combined number of children under 18 killed by guns through accident or suicide in 2010 and by homicide in 2011: 1,443.
Sandy Hook was targeted for a mass killing as it was a 'Gun Free Zone' and no other reason. Repealling the 'Gun Free Zones Act' might help. Agenda ALERT!
Law abiding citizens have the "right" to self-protection equal to repell the govt. Let's have 'reasonable gun control.' Agenda ALERT!
Prezbo may appear just appeasing antigun folks. Yet he'd love to ban firearms. The frightened kiddies have requested such. Agenda ALERT!
Teabaggers stayed peaceful, reasonable and orderly. Occupiers were trashy, even criminally so. Staying focused wins this one. Few, very few people are going to give up their right to self-defense.
Our Schools Protected by Only the Best and Brightest:
So school officials announced last week that they had hired retired county sheriff Clark Arnold to serve as Chatfield's armed security officer.
"It's a tremendous asset to the safety of the students," Chatfield School Director Matt Young told WNEM. "Providing a safe environment and an atmosphere where parents are comfortable, students are comfortable, and feel safe so that they can focus on learning."
But just days later, school officials revealed to The Flint Journal that Arnold had "made a breach in security protocol" by leaving his unloaded gun in a school restroom
Utah allows its' teachers to conceal carry, and they've had no problems with guns at school over the years. Score one for the caring armed citizen.
