Reason.tv: Why is the Government Driving Folks Off Their Land?
The Antelope Valley is a vast patch of desert on the outskirts of Los Angeles County, and a segment of the few rugged individualists who live out there increasingly are finding themselves the targets of armed raids from local code enforcement agents, who've assembled into task forces called Nuisance Abatement Teams (NATs).
The plight of the Valley's desert dwellers made regional headlines when county officials ordered the destruction of Phonehenge: a towering, colorful castle constructed out of telephone poles by retired phone technician Kim Fahey. Fahey was imprisoned and charged with several misdemeanors.
But Fahey is just one of many who've been targeted by the NATs, which were assembled at the request of County Supervisor Mike Antonovich in 2006. LA Weekly reporter Mars Melnicoff wrote an in-depth article in which she exposed the county's tactic of badgering residents with minor, but costly, code violations until they face little choice but to vacate the land altogether.
"They're picking on the the people who are the most defenseless and have the least resources," says Melnicoff.
Reason.tv collaborated with Melnicoff to talk with some of the NAT's targets, such as retired veteran Joey Gallo, who might face homelessness if he's forced to leave his house, and local pastor Oscar Castaneda, who says he's already given up the fight and is in the process of moving off the land he and his wife have lived on for 22 years. And, while Antonovich declined an interview, we did catch up with him at a public meeting in order to ask the big question at the center of all this: Why the sudden enforcement of these codes against people living in the middle of the desert, who seemingly are affecting no one?

Why? Because, Fuck Em. That's why.
Why? Because LA is a major ICLEI city. Check out your area against the Agenda 21 map. I bet you dollars to donuts you are in the middle of one of the global corradors on the map. We're fighting the same thing hear in Utah, but we're not as far down the road as you guys in CA are. Really look into Agenda 21 and you will find they have been at this a long time all over the country. If the terms sustainability, smart growth, central planning, non-motorized areas, an excess of bike lanes etc. mean anything to you, look into it. People are waking up to Agenda 21 all over the country so there is lots of information on the net now. Good Luck and fight loud and hard and hold your officials feet to the fire. They have no right to take any mans property. Spokan, after a long hard fight got them to back out of their ICLEI agreement, because it's an agreement that sidesteps the constitution and puts the city or county in a sovereign agreement, litterly a treaty, with the UN and their Agenda 21 program.
"Because all that is... is MINE."
Damned straight.
My conspiracy theory: Antonovich's other passion these days is green-energy projects. Easier to get such things off the ground if you don't have to deal with lots of pesky property owners.
But the EPA put a moratorium on solar collectors in the desert because... they wanted to do environmental-impact studies.
In the desert.
To collect sunshine.
The same outfit that fined Tesla Motors for not paying emissions protection money.
For an electric car.
That HAS no emissions.
The stoopid is strong these days.
The backdrop of this is that California recently enacted a mandate that 33% of energy has to come from renewable sources by 2020. As such, there's a big push to cover every inch of suitable land in solar panels and windmills. This scenario is playing out in many other parts of CA.
That means that the renewable electricity generation capacity must be far greater than 33% of total electricity generation capacity in California, because the renewable sources can not possibly be generating electricity 100% of the time. That means an ass ton of extra generation capacity, which someone will have to pay for. Did nobody bother to think these things through?
The good news is that both solar and load tend to peak in the middle of the day, so fossil would be more important for the base load.
The stoopid is strong these days.
It has nothing to do with stupid, and everything to do with corruption.
This. These unelected bureaucrats that run your lives are smarter than you think. They absolutely know what they're doing. And like a dog that licks his balls, they do it because they can.
>Smarter than you think
Which is why they didn't have a response at the public comment session.
You know, just because someone steals from you doesn't make them smart. It does, however, mean that they can't use the excuse of ignorance to justify their actions.
IOW, their failure to have an explanation doesn't make them honest.
I'm guessing, of course, that some big developer has plans for the area, and needs the riff-raff cleared out.
But why would Hedley Lamarr care about where the choo-choo go?
It would be more honest just to pull a number 6 on them.
Lololol you win
according to Hollywood this is the only possible answer. Is Antonovich white?
I'm guessing, of course, that some big developer has plans for the area, and needs the riff-raff cleared out.
There is this high speed train that California liberals are trying to get running on time.
But but but but.... WILDERNESS!
TOADZ!!
Despite being a village, Marchwood is the home of a refuse incinerator (and the remains of a previous incinerator), a sewage works, a large military port and a natural gas fuelled combined cycle power station [3] replacing an older station which was dismantled during the 1980s. The 842 megawatt facility is one of the most efficient generators of electricity in the UK at 58% fuel efficiency. Until privatisation, Marchwood was home to one of the three principal research facilities of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB), concentrating on heavy plant - the other facilities were at Leatherhead and at Berkeley.

I find GSL's "green energy" theory more plausible than residential development. If we were talking about some sort of hippy enclave overlooking the Pacific, I would be more inclined toward the notion this is being driven by/for developers.
Of course, it shouldn't need to be said, but-
DIE IN A FIRE, ANTONOVICH
Sure. I would point out that green energy development is still development.
green energy development is still development.
Government subsidized development. When you build a housing tract, you still need to sell those houses to someone.
Green projects have built in 'profits' - to encourage the 'risk' of investment.
One common trait of all con-men is to say absolutely nothing.
You got a permit for that fire, Brooks? Lotta carbon you're givin' off there...
This land is my land,
This land ain't your land,
This land is for me,
and not for thee!
This land is my land,
And you're not welcome,
It's mine to exploit,
and so are you!
Liberarians keep telling me a Non-State Society is pure Hell.
For more than 99 per cent of human his?tory people have lived in groupings that social scientists call "non-state societies."

Re: White Imbecile,
You would be crying like a little girl at the sight of one of your fingernails breaking after attempting to gather a root to eat. Go fuck yourself.
Not all of us are poodles. I noted your photograph within this essay, third picture down.

No, you are a poodle.
Yep, "libertarians" keep telling you that the "non-state society is pure hell." Really? The anarchists and Seasteaders, too? Thought not.
So, no. But a lot of Reasonoids have given you the business because of your dumbfuck ideas and theories supported by [citations] from goofball blogs and...air, and the stuff you pull from your ass and such.
Spewing nonsense is good fun - misrepresenting others' views because they don't swallow your spew makes you the misguided, laughable fucktard that you are.
That is all
A Non-State sociopolitical typology* is a primitive band or tribe.
Anarcho-primitivism is the only anarchy advocating true Non-State band or tribal life, proven to work for millions of years.
Other anarchists as you mention keep profession hate of the State, but too often want the agricultural City-State to endure, with somehow everybody working happily in egalitarian factories or some stupid shit fantasy like that. Or seasteading, an other nonsense fantasy. Or L5. Or Pallas. All fantasies.
I don't deal in fantasy. Non-state sociopolitical typology* is a proven, real, and well-studied human lifestyle.

Well studied like ME?
for most of human history we didn't have modern dentistry or indoor plumbing either.
Dentistry?
Cancer, coronary thrombosis, anemia, dental caries, and mental disorders are but a few of the hallmarks of agriculture
Oh..oh...oh!
Pick me! Pick me!
I can explain the cancer part!
BTW, here's a link to Antonovich's desire to cover the Antelope Valley in solar plants and wind farms. Just sayin'.
I'd rather look at Mila Jovavich in a bikini.
I can't believe that crappy hack director Paul Anderson gets to go home to her.
I can't believe I get to go home to my wife.
It's all relative.
That could be taken a couple of ways...
OK, thats kinda scary when you think about it dude.

Not the first time this has happened.
Civilization is externally aggressive and internally repressive, as Stanley Diamond states in his In Search of the Primitive: A Critique of Civilization.
How's that Stockholm Syndrome working out?
Little-known fun fact: "White Indian" is actually Iroquois for "Hey, this one's beginning to slosh. I think it's full, now."
True story.
Next thing you know they'll be running off the Jawas and moisture farmers. Fooking Empire.
If they just put those windmills and solar panels underground, the natural beauty could be preserved. Everybody wins!
Smartful thinkingness!
Another "Big Dig" project...
Why is the Government Driving Folks Off Their Land?
This is the only thread that is ripe and appropriate for a White Indian takeover.
It only has the power we give it.
This is the only thread that is ripe and appropriate for a White Indian takeover.
Not only that, for once he would be on the same as the rest of the libertarian community.(Though our remedies might vary.)
Yet he is a no show.
Whazzup with that???
*Sits back, opens a cold one, and awaits witty responses.*
I'm gone to Croatan.
We were taught in elementary school that the first settlements in Roanoke failed; the colonists disappeared, leaving behind them only the cryptic message "Gone To Croatan."

I'm gone to Croatan.
...is sounding better with each passing day.
*puts down newspaper reporting higher prices, higher taxes, increased surveillance, etc.*
By the way...
Hakim Bey is hardly hostile to the AC-S in these writings. He seems to derive pleasure from having a heirarchy around in order that he might be a thumb in its eye.

Hey... WAIT a minute!
You know, I only just now realized: "Teepee" and "Peepee" have almost EXACTLY the same letters!
Second-largest U.S. Indian tribe expels slave descendants
American Indians. So spiritual. So true.
Don't worry... White Idiot will find some way to justify this.
What White Imbecile would say: The spiritual American Indians have been contaminated by [or are prisoners of, take your pick] the agricultural city-state!
That's what is so great about his newly-found theory of everything: It's so pliable.
Add the word typology and you got it...
Second-largest U.S. Indian tribe expels slave descendants
Ah...time to divvy up the revenues from the casino.
Can't you see this man is a ni?
I hired you people to try to get a little track laid, not to jump around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots.
So - the very first colony in the New World chose to renounce its contract with Prospero (Dee/Raleigh/Empire) and go over to the Wild Men with Caliban. They dropped out. They became "Indians," "went native," opted for chaos over the appalling miseries of serfing for the plutocrats and intellectuals of London.

From the 2nd paragraph of that site:
"The opening of the 'new' world was conceived from the start as an occultist operation. The magus John Dee, spiritual advisor to Elizabeth I, seems to have invented the concept of "magical imperialism" and infected an entire generation with it. "
[CIV] agri ((IMPErialism)) was done with OCCULT MAGIC!
California recently enacted a mandate that 33% of energy has to come from renewable sources by 2020.
This interlocks neatly with mandating 85% of the money required to fund the state come from a magic hat.
Does hydroelectric power qualify as "renewable"?
I hope the proper authorities are busily dusting off a lot of plans for damming California rivers.
If you can believe it, many greenies here are actually hostile to water power. They've really hitched their wagons to wind and solar.
Re: GLS,
They're not serious, GSL - imagine humanity going bananas and putting up windmills and solar panels for all energy needs. The greens would THEN say "you know what, this wind and solar thing is not a good idea because windmills kill birds and panels take too much space, plus we still hate humanity!"
They are already saying that OM
it's also unacceptable when it blocks views from the kennedy compound
that's when we start using the greenies for ... "green" energy
Re: P Brooks,
Only if you can piss enough to refill the dam... then sure.
Dalmia just did a piece on this last week. Greenie civil war in Cali, that is.
The story needs more Jack Nicholson slapping Faye Dunaway.
So did my marriage.
Clearly, the message here is you gotta stand up fow yur shit.
Apparently these people didn't get the memo: It's the government's land, you're just renting it... and your lease is up.
Same with privation property.
All land invaded and occupied by the agricultural City-State (Civilization) is heavily controlled by the State's. Big-government's primary entitlement program is to grant Title to Land.
If I know anything about Westerns, a cattle baron is at the heart of this.
Or maybe a mining baron. Regardless, a ghost Clint Eastwood is their only hope.
Hey more relevant question: How can we help the legal defense of these guys?
Are here for Justice...And Blood. Both really.
My grandmother sold some property in the central valley to a solar power company and while they entered into escrow there have been a number of lawsuits by concerned citizens to stop the sales from going through. The upshot being that so far she's gotten a decent chunk of money and if it all falls through she gets to keep it AND the land returns to us. Yay Us.
*Sigh*
Hope that the congressmen can follow up these problems to be solved, accumulate no good ~
thank you for sharing such informative and fantastic article.
The State desires that landowners assist in growing the tax base. Those who are not productive in this regard are likely to be removed. The first rule for being a successful recluse or hermit is to keep your domicile either invisible or neat, tidy, and unremarkable.
The reason their going after them now is because there is no building going on so the county officials are looking for work by enforcing building codes. It's happening in this town they are actually following lumber trucks to see if their going to a permitted project. BTW in this town if you spend as little as $100.00 on upgrades to your house you are supposed to get a permit.
So much for living "off the grid," huh?
Another example of out of control government and arrogant, unresponsive elected officials.
Los Angeles has many problems, not the least of which is budgetary problems.
A good line for future investigation would be the cost of these enforcement teams and targeted enforcement. Second line is the cost to the county in reduced tax revenue by forcing people off their property and returning the land to an unproductive state.
The Antelope Valley is an out of the way corner of Los Angeles County. The population density is low as is the aggregate demand for county services.
Phonehenge was an architectural work of art - now destroyed.
Watts Towers, also in Los Angeles, has been protected and landmarked.
What you are witnessing is Agenda 21.
The assault on private property is ongoing everywhere and is what needs to be stopped. The assault includes how you can live your life, how you run your business, what car you choose to drive, as well as real estate. It is time for a revolt against the government - it is out of control. The best way to do this is with your vote in every election but be sure you are in on how the party chooses its candidates because if you do not have the right candidates in he general election your vote will be meaningless.
