Clearly that article was written under duress, probably with one of those “concealed carry” pistols pointed at his head.
    /snark

Not a half bad article. I find it refreshing that the author showed that Ron Paul supporters have normal, hard working 9to5 jobs like “software developer” and “hedge fund analyst” and aren’t all college aged daydreamers.

  2. ed   17 years ago

Not that Reason is officially endorsing Ron Paul.
Not that there would be anything wrong with that.
    In keeping with the situation.

  3. LarryA   17 years ago

Picture either major party allowing such an effort without micromanagement-level oversight.

  4. BakedPenguin   17 years ago

ed – given that 1) Paul is a viable candidate; 2) that the majority of people who come to this blog would likely be more interested than Paul than other candidates; and 3) articles about Paul are known to generate hits and therefore revenue, I’d say they could well have other reasons for posting an article about Paul other than outright logrolling.

  5. Isaac Bartram   17 years ago

If you read the article you will find that apparently “interpret[ing] the Constitution literally” is some kind of whacko position.

    Wow!

  6. Ron Paul is a pathetic fucking   17 years ago

And now more idiocy. The nuttiest asshole to run for the Presidency, the man who makes Lyndon Larouche look like James Madison. Yes, Ron Paul has now said that the assassination of Benazir Bhutto is the fault of the United States and has also stated that the Al Queda has a right to be annoyed with the US.
    http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2007/12/27/ron.paul.bhutto.reax.cnn

Of course, if anyone asks him to clarify the above stupidity, the interviewer will be the one called an idiot, just like when Neal Cavuto asked Ron Paul about his refusal to return money from known Neo-nazis.
Ron Paul is an absolute fucking disgrace, not fit to serve as the most powerful man in the world. Any I can guarantee this looney tunes’ words blaming the US for the murder of a politician by Islamic terrorists will not receive one iota of criticism or coverage on this site, which has degenerated into one long, uncritical love letter to the fucking unhinged crackpot that is Ron Paul.

And for Ron Paul’s views on race please follow this link: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/12/26/85617/090

As much as it pains me to provide a link for the Daily Kos, the stuff he has on his site is very enlightening. Of course, it wouldn’t be nearly as enlightening if the people that run this website ever took the time to post anything critical of the moron that is Ron Paul. Instead we get nonstop ass-kissing and assertions that Ron Paul is Thomas Jefferson, only with bigger ears.

  7. Isaac Bartram   17 years ago

In case nobody got what I meant.

Aren’t laws supposed to be interpreted literally?

I mean to say, is the some huge metaphor hidden in the drug laws or the twenty thousand or so gun control laws in this country?

  8. Warty   17 years ago

    Hi, Edward!

  9. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Dear Pathetic, I’ve seen the Daily Kos stuff, there are no source documents and until you can produce a source, you’re simply a pathetic smear of a taint (or something smeared on a taint by careless wiping). Got that visual from my friends at Urkobold and their obsession with both RP and taints.

The least you could do is have your mother soap your mouth. Assuming you ever had a mother that is.

  10. drawnasunder   17 years ago

    Sounds like fun.

  11. Eric S.   17 years ago

    To ^ guy:
Could you be more full of shit? Paul didn’t say anything remotely close to what you wish he had said.

  12. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Isaac, the Constitution is a LIVING DOCUMENT meant to bend with the winds of the day like a willow tree. Weren’t you pay attention in 12th grade civics class?

  13. Eric S.   17 years ago

Oops. I was talking about the d-bag 5 posts above me.

  14. Brandybuck   17 years ago

You mean Al Qaeda has no right to be annoyed at the US? WTF?!?! There’s nothing wrong with being annoyed. I get annoyed at fuckwits all the time.

  15. Edward   17 years ago

Ron Paul fanatic involved in Bhuto assassinationcnn.com – CNN is reporting that H. L. Amir, a known Paul campaign worker in Texas, has been implicated in today’s assassination. Amir, not seen in the United States since a early December rally, was not known to have any ties to Pakistan beforehand. No comment as of yet from the Paul campaign on what exactly Amir’s position was.

  16. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

    Aussie Shiraz, Jesus

Edna, I’d agree in most cases, but the 2 Up is pretty decent (and well priced for the Cheap Winecommonsewer).

For a treat plunk down a twenty for some Mollydooker. Or about $60.00 for some high octane Mollydooker (Carnival of Love, 95 pts Parker, 97 pts WA).

Aussie and Shiraz and dang good.

  17. Kwix   17 years ago

    TWC,
    Bad crosspost??

  18. Kwix   17 years ago

But thanks for the recommendation anyway.

  19. Annoyed Grunt   17 years ago

    Sources, Edward, sources!

  20. Isaac Bartram   17 years ago

    TWC

Just in case you’re interested 2 Up is the name of an Australian game of chance played by two players who each flip a coin. I’ve forgotten the rules and combinations that win etc.

Anyway a twoup school is basically the equivalent of a floating crap game here.

I have several different brands of Aussie shiraz here at chez Isaac. Also some CabSavs and merlots. They seem to be dumping the stuff on the market in barrels.

  21. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Kwix, sorry, but the thread she put that on is way dead and I’m pretty sure she’ll come around here and see this one. Sorry for straying off topic. More likely to do that AFTER several glasses of the red than before.

  22. Brandybuck   17 years ago

The only sources are Edwards putrid ass.

  23. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

    Isaac,

2 Up is the name of an Australian game of chance

Thanks, and this 2 Up Shiraz uses that Aussie bar game as it’s hook. The story, the label, etc, etc, etc. If you can get past the screwcap, it’s pretty good. I, as a good libertarian, write my CONgressman daily asking for a federal ban on screwcap wine.

Didn’t know the name also applied to a floating crap game in the US. Interesting stuff here at H&R.

  24. Felix   17 years ago

    Oscar Madison for council —

    His enthusiasm mounts till
    The election day.
    Never frowning, always smiling,
    Oscar cannot miss;
Cute and sweet and so beguiling,
A face you’d love to kiss!

  25. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Eric, we were pretty sure who you were talking about.

Oh man, Mrs TWC just handed me a bowl of potato leek soup she made from scractch. Dude!

    MMMMMMMMM.

  26. Fluffy   17 years ago

    Well, Mr. Disgrace –

Musharraf has been a client of the US for some time, soaking up military aid money that no one seems able to account for now.

But we got impatient with Musharraf as a puppet, so we pressured him to bring Bhutto back in the country, and hoped that she could replace him.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Musharraf wanted to be replaced. [Gasp!] So he either had Bhutto assassinated, or held his security forces back to allow someone else to assassinate her.

As long as we think that we can micromanage the domestic politics of other nations and hand-pick the leadership of those nations according to what we calculate to be our interest in the next five minutes, it is in fact fair and appropriate to say that the results are our “fault”.

You may think that we’re riding the tiger now and can’t afford to even try getting off, but it looks more and more like every step we take to try to “restore stability” just makes the situation worse. Now we have Richardson and Biden calling for Musharraf’s ouster. Sure guys, that’ll work.

As I recall, Saddam Hussein was a client of ours once, too. Maybe Musharraf will get into the “Ex-US-client, now-member-of-Axis-of-Evil” business. Another stirring Bush administration foreign policy success.

The only way to attain stability in the Middle East relative to US interests, at least is to declare that we no longer care which faction dominates Pakistan, or any other Middle Eastern country, and will deal with any ruling party. We have to replace the false stability of desperately trying to prop up or hand pick the governments we want with the stability of not giving a shit either way.

  27. Isaac Bartram   17 years ago

Didn’t know the name also applied to a floating crap game in the US. Interesting stuff here at H&R.

No I meant that twoup is more or less the Australian equivalent of craps. In that it is commonly played in sort of roving games. The difference is that an organized twoup game is called a “twoup school”.

I’ve been led to understand that screwcaps seal better than corks and rapidly becoming the preferred method. I’ve even gotten french wines with screwcaps.

As for the Constitution perhaps it’s time to start interpreting all laws metaphorically instead of literally.

    Think of the possibilities.

  28. tarran   17 years ago

Guys, I think Edward was doing his favorite search on digg for Ron Paul related posts, and got excited when he saw this one.

Of course, if you click through to the linked article, it actually says no such thing, but hey, when you are edward, you make your own reality. 😉

  29. Kwix   17 years ago

    Sources, Edward, sources!

Digg.com and the submitter was full of shit. Apparently this same submitter has a tendency to post BS diggs lambasting Ron Paul. Indeed, since Edward used the exact same wording, I’d suspect they may be one in the same.

  30. Kwix   17 years ago

    Damn,
    tarran beat me to it.

  31. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Isaac, yep, screwcaps are coming. I’m agin’ ’em on principle. Never mind that they do a nice job of sealing the wine bottle, that’s irrelevant.

However, screwcaps have lost a teensy bit of their luster lately. It turns out that they don’t do as well as cork for the long term and they have some problems that are equivalent to cork failures, although screwcaps are still more reliable than cork.

  32. James Anderson Merritt   17 years ago

I’m still laughing at Tim Russert’s citation of Doooondeeeerrrooo (mangling his name rather noticeably as well, if I recall correctly), on the last Meet The Press. I’ll get around to laughing at the latest round of attempted character assassinations after the holidays, when I have more time. 😉

  33. So now you know   17 years ago

    crap != craps

    craps != crap

  34. robc   17 years ago

    TWC,

Any problem with plastic corks? I figured they do the job without the real cork infection problem and without looking as silly as screwoffs.

  35. Graphite   17 years ago

Wow, this article even says RP wants to “legalize gold currencies” as opposed to forcing us back onto the gold standard. A nice find.

  36. Ali   17 years ago

Napolitano on Lincoln (actually from the Reason talk):

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=L6-VQpY1NJM

As far as Paul’s position on Lincoln, I believe that his position would agree 100% with Murray Rothbard. The issue at hand has never been slavery per se. Slavery has been used as the cause to convince the American people to go to war (sounds familiar?). Here is what Rothbard wrote:

“The Civil War, in addition to its unprecedented bloodshed and devastation, was used by the triumphal and virtually one-party Republican regime to drive through its statist, formerly Whig, program: national governmental power, protective tariff, subsidies to big business, inflationary paper money, resumed control of the federal government over banking, large-scale internal improvements, high excise taxes, and, during the war, conscription and an income tax. Furthermore, the states came to lose their previous right of secession and other states” powers as opposed to federal governmental powers.

“The Civil War and its virtual one-party system led to the permanent establishment of a neomercantilist policy of Big Government and the subsidizing of various big business interests through protective tariffs, huge land grants and other subsidies to railroads, federal excise taxation, and a federally controlled banking system. It also brought the first imposition of federal conscription and an income tax, setting dangerous precedents for the future.”

From Rothbard’s “For a New Liberty”. Rothbard is a “a great friend and colleague” of Dr. Ron Paul.

I’ve been led to understand that screwcaps seal better than corks and rapidly becoming the preferred method. I’ve even gotten french wines with screwcaps.

For the short term, they’re great. The jury is still out on how they hold up over decades, so it may be a while before people are willing to risk their Bordeaux with them.

If you care about Paul, just came across this on the AP website:

    —
GOP candidates to meet in N.H. forum

WASHINGTON (AP) – The New Hampshire Republican Party is sponsoring a forum for Republican presidential candidates on Jan. 6, two days before the state’s first-in-the-nation primary.

The forum, where the candidates will be questioned by Fox New Channel’s Chris Wallace, will be held a day after ABC holds back to back Democratic and Republican presidential debates.

“Never underestimate New Hampshire voters’ appetite for politics,” said Fergus Cullen, the chairman of the state Republican Party.

Participating in the forum will be Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson.

Unlike a debate, the candidates will face questions from Wallace around a table in a studio on the campus of St. Anselm College in Goffstown, N.H.. The 90-minute encounter will air live beginning at 8 p.m. ET on the Fox News Channel and on Fox News Radio.
    —

They do not list Paul. Make sure to call FOX and make sure that they include him.

  39. mketcher   17 years ago

Ron Paul is right. The U.S. involvement in the Middle East has done nothing but destabilze the whole region, making those regimes ripe for terrorist takeovers. By propping up corrupt regimes, the U.S. has done nothing but make more enemies and encourage more bloodshed.

The response by the other candidates to the terrorist attacks is typical grandstanding and grandiose scheming. See this YouTube music video, which is a dead-on satire on the president, the mindless MSM, and the war on terror. It’s from the new zombie musical feature film, “Song of the Dead,” and features horror movie veteran, Reggie Bannister (Wishmaster, Phantasm, Bubba Ho-tep) as the president of the U.S. responding to a “zombie terrorist” attack. The filmmaker, Chip Gubera, is donating a share of his DVD sales of this anti-war satire to the Ron Paul campaign. Go to:

  40. Daniel Reeves   17 years ago

Holy shit, somebody interprets a legal document legally! Bush, did you hear that?

  41. Daniel Reeves   17 years ago

^ Sorry, that was too easy. I should know better.

  42. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

    robc,

    plastic corks

I much prefer plastic or composite corks to those ghastly metal contraptions.

One of my favorite wines (St Francis) is contained with a composite cork and has been for many years. I’ve never seen a problem with plastic or compostite closures. Then again, I haven’t had nearly as much problem with natural cork as is claimed by those who know more than I do about it. It is claimed that 5-10 percent of all corked wine is ruined due to cork failure. My experience has been more like a handful over many years. I could be lucky I suppose.

  43. TLB   17 years ago

But, it gets even better! After the campaign, they’re all going to live together in a big, neat loft! With lots of VideoGames and ComicBooks and stuff.

(That is, the ones who don’t take the “black Nikes” route.)

  44. The Lotto Thread   17 years ago

I could be lucky I suppose.

Yo! Get back here where you belong!

  45. MCW   17 years ago

Ron Paul–so-called “liberty” for priveleged white males, but not for women (pro-life fanatic), non-whites (anti-civil rights), or the working class ( anti-union).

  46. Warty   17 years ago

Who let the tards play with < b > tags?

  47. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

I tend to isolationism, which RP routinely disavows by putting it into the context of friendly relations with all entangling alliances with none, free trade, et al. That said, I remain unconvinced that a better foreign policy might deter those who live in the tenth century from hating the Great Satan.

It would certainly help, no question about that, but those guys have to hate us. It’s in the book, man.

The pragmatic side of that is that if we minded our beeswax instead of their’s they’d focus the hatred somewhere else, reverting back to the sand dune version of the Hatfields and McCoys.

OTOH, we could go with Mrs TWC as Secy of State, who would airlift billions of dollars worth of cell phones and Ipods. Once life gets a bit better on this side of Nirvana, suicide bombing begins to lose it’s allure.

  48. prolefeed   17 years ago

Great surreal thread — Edwierd foaming at the mouth at some rumor that he may have planted himself while TWC et. al. calmly discuss the merits of screwcaps vs. corks for wine. LOL!

  49. MCW   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

  50. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Who let the tards play with < b > tags?

    Warty, you are The Man!

And I still LOVE your quote. It gets me THRU MY DAY.

It is a nearly perfect expression of veiled optimism that works well for a glass-is-mostly-empty kind of guy like me:

Ron Paul needs to stop infecting me with his horrible, horrible optimism.

    A glass to your health!

Danny! Bring a bottle of good red. Thanks.

  51. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

MCW, I used to be poor, I used to be tanned but it ruined my skin, I never was rich, but having a little disposable green is better than wondering where the rent money’s going to come from.

Nobody denies that libertarians are mostly white boys, is that meant to be a racist remark?

But, I hate to break it to you, your demographics are way off, most libertarians I’ve known over the years haven’t exactly been billionaires.

  52. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Oh yeah, MCW? What was your point? Besides the one on your head I mean.

Where’s that Brotherben guy, we’ll have him bless your pointy little head for you.

  53. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Prole, surreal can be fun. 🙂

  54. Ali   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

Hmmm… I certainly fit in B (I mean, com’n, dunno what to do about that;-) ), my debts seem to say I do not really fit in C. Certainly not A (though some university forms seems to want to put me down as “white” –I think it is just PC, though).

Jennifer is not B, is she?

Am I the only one at H&R who is not A? I guess I will eventually be booted from H&R.

  55. MCW   17 years ago

“Nobody denies that libertarians are mostly white boys, is that meant to be a racist remark?”

It could possibly be prejudice, but it could not be racism. Racism=Power+Prejudice.

“But, I hate to break it to you, your demographics are way off, most libertarians I’ve known over the years haven’t exactly been billionaires.”

I didn’t say billionaires, I said upper-middle class or rich. That would mean people who make $80,000 or more a year.

  56. Graphite   17 years ago

There’s a pretty good Glenn Beck interview with Penn Jillette being rebroadcast tonight. He discusses a lot of libertarian ideas and briefly pays homage to Ayn Rand/objectivism.

Probably because he’s white, male, and rich.

  57. M   17 years ago

    TWC at 10:01pm, allow me.

  58. smartass sob   17 years ago

    libertarians are mostly white boys

Maybe that’s because most of the boys in this country ARE white boys. I’m sure that fact really gripes alot of asses out there, but that’s the way it is.

  59. Ali   17 years ago

I didn’t say billionaires, I said upper-middle class or rich. That would mean people who make $80,000 or more a year.

Then I fall short of C by about $2,500. See MCW, I am officially only B. Those libertarians seem diverse to me!

  60. prolefeed   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

MCW, not to burst your bubble with actual facts and stuff, but quite a few of the folks here don’t seem to fit your description.

  61. Migrained Worker   17 years ago

    *sigh

  62. Guy Montag   17 years ago

    This should be fun!

    Oh wow, it already is!

The nuttiest asshole to run for the Presidency, the man who makes Lyndon Larouche look like James Madison.

Um, no the nuttiest person to run for president from any of the major parties is the Honerable Rep. Dennis Kucinich. He makes Stalin look like Thomas Jefferson.

The other posts are quite funny too. Well, I have not seen the “Bhutto was murdered to kill the gold standard” post yet, but I am sure it is on the way.

Oddly, this story seems to be tracking the same general path as the MSNBC “transgendered” special on TV (sorry for the pun) right now, but not literally (I hope).

  63. prolefeed   17 years ago

Picked a page at random at the site linked above, and got three women, two non-whites, and at least two people who looked distinctly scruffy and proletarian. None of them unambiguously fit all three of your categories.

So, maybe the typical libertarian is best characterized by their lack of typicality? That they’re best characterized by a love of liberty?

And for someone who characterizes him/herself as a “worker”, you seem to spend a lot of time in the middle of a workday posting non-work-related stuff.

    Just sayin’ …

  64. MCW   17 years ago

“And for someone who characterizes him/herself as a “worker”, you seem to spend a lot of time in the middle of a workday posting non-work-related stuff.”

Being in a labor union I can do this. If it was up to you libertarians I would be working 14 hours a day without any breaks, and my family would be starving.

  65. Guy Montag   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

well, I wish I was that rich and I have a long vowel at the end of my real name. Then again, the hard-core surrender monkey Libertarians keep reminding me that I am not a Libertarian, even after I tell them I use a “small l”.

  66. smartass sob   17 years ago

    @Migrained Worker,

On these boards it is customary to put quoted passages in italics – so as to visually differentiate them from responses. Emphasized words and/or phrases are either put in caps or italics.

  67. big boss type man   17 years ago

you’re not going to get good production out of working people for 14 hours and no breaks. at least not for the long term. maybe if you could replace them every 3 months, but then retraining takes time.

no, i’d rather my guys and gals work 6 hours a day with an hour for lunch for 4 days a week and come in well rested and give it their all!

  68. Ali   17 years ago

    Prolefeed-

I saw the picture of a bald guy on that website you posted, are bald people allowed to be libertarians? All Reason writers seem not to be bald.

Talking of bald, here is Giuliani getting “bald”!

  69. Graphite   17 years ago

As a management consultant I’m well acquainted with the concept of 14 (not to mention 20) hour days, which is one of the reasons I fit into category C.) despite making fairly mediocre per-hour wages.

Whether MCW is intentionally or unintentionally hilarious, I hope he sticks around.

  70. Migrained Worker   17 years ago

smartass, on these boards it is even more customary to quote in blockquotes, but why you are offering even a partial lesson on the topic escapes me.

My eponymous point, directed to MCW, was that random emphases can produce cephalgia.

    Peace out.

  71. Jim Bob   17 years ago

This is the craziest motherfucker running for president. Click and read; you won’t be disappointed.

  72. smartass sob   17 years ago

    migrained worker,

I offered the lesson you refer to in response to the page you linked to. I was not aware as to whom your point was directed; it was not clear. Now please, take something for your headache and go lie down; you’ll feel better.

  73. miche   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

I’m A, definitely not B (although some jackass at Wonkette found the worst pic from the Ron Paul shoot and a bunch of nellies said I look post surgery- fuckers), and only got to C because I married well. My husband will confirm that I’ve always been libertarian though.)

  74. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Actually, Migrained, the link was pretty funny.

  75. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

    Jim Bob,

That guy just had to be from Texas? Geez, don’t we catch enough crap as it is without that?

  78. Ali   17 years ago

    TWC, miche:

I can attest to the fact tha Miche is not a white male.

    Ditto!

  79. smartass sob   17 years ago

Yeah, Miche is most definitely not male. Not post surgery either. Surgeons might be good, but their not that good.

  80. smartass sob   17 years ago

    their = they’re

  81. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

So, Michelle, why no link to the Wonkette pitchur? 🙂

  82. Ali   17 years ago

From the responses to miche’s comment, I could see why libertarians are mostly male.

  83. boston   17 years ago

your first mistake was going to wonkette

  84. miche   17 years ago

It was soooo bad that I about died when it was brought to my attention. We were goofing around and I had on a white tank and white socks and I was a bit goofy because we were trying to get the lighting right. Not pretty at all but I’ll try to find it to provide some laughs. Give me a second…

  85. miche   17 years ago

And I didn’t go to Wonkette. They found it from the photog’s Flickr site and posted it to make fun of me.

  86. pdog   17 years ago

I am a libertarian, and I am not white. I am latino, and while I am indeed male I cannot say that I am rich or upper-middle class. I hope to reach the upper-middle class one day though.

  87. miche   17 years ago

Here it is. Just go easy on me…

The photographer offered to write in a big “Fuck You!” to Wonkette, but we decided to let it drop. I apparently don’t photograph well in white and didn’t want to draw more attention to the others in the set.

  88. boston   17 years ago

    well then i feel stupid

  89. Ali   17 years ago

    I can’t help but make the comment…

I had on a white tank and white socks

but is there anything in between?

(please do not take it personally miche)

  90. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

Speaking of that, Mrs TWC isn’t exactly white male neither. bonus: She grew up dirt poor, being the only kid in Jr High without a telephone (I’m on the couch for sure if she sees this).

I been around this movement since Jesus Chrysler was on mess duty and I’ve known a lot of libertarians. Most of them are working class people with good morals, strong backs, and a love of liberty. Sure, there are some rich people. Thank God for that or Reason, Cato, and the rest would be sunk.

Why is it always uncool to be rich and conservative, or rich and libertarian but it’s just tits to be the millionaire that supports The Nation or to be Babs, or Algore, or Meathead?

I’m all for double standards (I actually invented quite a few) but, come on….

  91. Ali   17 years ago

    To hell with Wonkette!

  92. miche   17 years ago

    Damn you Ron Paul!

(I am a BIG Ron Paul fan!)

  94. Ali   17 years ago

Well, miche, it was fun meeting you. And you are great!

  95. Warty   17 years ago

Ron Paul needs to stop infecting me with his horrible, horrible optimism.

I prefer to be cynical and jaded, but ole Ron and his merry band of misfits have a maddening tendency to make me less so.

When the Browns are horrible, as they usually are, their piles of losses don’t bother me so much. They just fade into the background noise, as it were. But when they unexpectedly become good and lose in the last second of a playoff game, or get shut out of the playoffs with a 10-6 record as seems likely to happen this year, it’s like being buggered with a cheese grater. You may draw the analogy to politics at your leisure.

Also, < b > tags are way kewler than < i > tags. Thanks, Formerly Lower Middle Class Wife Beating Alcoholic Unemployed Factory Mid-Level Floor Manager! Your vitriol exceeds your erudition.

Jesus Chrysler, those people were fargin’ rude. But I noticed they weren’t posting any personal photos of themselves. There is a reason for that.

I continue to wonder why Reason likes to hold hands with Wonky. Must be the exposure value. You could also get that with a trench coat.

Michelle: There’s nothing wrong with that photo.

  99. miche   17 years ago

Back at ya Ali! I’m outta here. The problem with having a 16 year old in college is that she sometimes thinks she’s an adult and so based on a couple of her recent not so adult actions, we took her car away. That means no tipsy late night surfing for me. Her credit cards are cancelled and I’ve got to drive her around for a little while. Good night all!

  103. miche   17 years ago

Wonkette totally skated over pics that were more like this one in order to poke fun. Oh well, I guess they needed traffic and that’s something Ron Paul’s name is really good at providing.

Miche — Well, we’ve got two extremely good pics of you posted here, one more so-so. On average, you’re a hottie, so don’t let the Wonkettes get to you.

“And for Ron Paul’s views on race please follow this link: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/12/26/85617/090”

No, that’s the pinkos’ spin on Ron Paul’s views on race. For his *actual* views on race, see Ron’s OWN web site, specifically this page:

    http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/racism/

Where he states (in part): “Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than as individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups.”

    -jcr

  123. John C. Randolph   17 years ago

“Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?”

Well, I’m white, but the white-power kiddies would like to kill me for being Jewish. I’m male, and I *plan* on getting rich, although I’m not there yet.

    -jcr

  124. John C. Randolph   17 years ago

    Miche,

I suspect that a large part of wonkette’s vitriol is the hostility I often see from less-attractive women towards more-attractive women.

Women outnumber men in DC by a considerable margin, and she may have just been left standing in the capitol hill musical chairs game.

    -jcr

  125. Ayn_Randian   17 years ago

“Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than as individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups.” – Ron Paul

    Gosh, that sounds awfully familiar:

“Racism is the lowest, most crudely primitive form of collectivism. It is the notion of ascribing moral, social or political significance to a man’s genetic lineage — the notion that a man’s intellectual and characterological traits are produced and transmitted by his internal body chemistry. Which means, in practice, that a man is to be judged, not by his own character and actions, but by the characters and actions of a collective of ancestors. “

I’m not even going to attribute that quote; y’all should be able to figure it out.

Oh hell, it was Ayn Rand.

    RON PAUL ’08!

  126. Eric Dondero   17 years ago

Ron Paul’s daily average at RCP is now down to 3.8%. It was at 4.0% even last week. 5.1% 3 weeks ago.

Seems the more Paul campaigns, and the more his supporters campaign for him, the lower he drops in the polls.

His usual smokes are Monte Cristo #2s that a friend ships in. In a pinch he smokes Romeo Y Julietas or some hand rolls that I found from a nearby cigar shop. (I was lucky enough to find the shop when I was looking for a way to make up for being particularly cunty. I’m not sure what tobacco they roll, but the old man honed his craft in Cuba.)

  129. Fluffy   17 years ago

    MCW –

Maybe the reason libertarians tend to be upper middle class or rich is because they’re smarter than everyone else, so even if they start out poor they correct that situation.

I think one other reason you have that perception is because libertarians tend to have many of the class markers of the upper class [whether of the standard or the crunchy variety] and as a result appear to be wealthy even when they aren’t doing that well. I’ve had some really shitty years, but I doubt anyone ever looked at me and said, “Hey, look at that poor bum over there.”

  130. Rich white boy   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

I’ve always been white and male, but I didn’t become rich (by MCW’s definition) until relatively recently. When I was 35, I got tired of being a poorly paid white-collar worker, took the LSAT, borrowed a heap of money, and went to law school. God bless America!

  133. Isaac Bartram   17 years ago

Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with bein’ poor, ‘ceptin’ liking it.

There’s also nothing wrong with being poor and being content with one’s lot. Many people are satisfied with lives that are not driven by constant pressure to succeed and/or acquire.

There is nothing wrong with this unless it is worn as some kind of badge of honor or superiority (in which case it is simply annoying) or accompanied by constant agitation for legislation to coerce handouts from others. But people who are satisfied in life rarely do this.

  134. pdog   17 years ago

There’s also nothing wrong with being poor and being content with one’s lot. Many people are satisfied with lives that are not driven by constant pressure to succeed and/or acquire.

I completely agree. A lot of people seem to equate capitalislm with materialism. I believe capitalism is the most efficient and natural economic system for mankind, yet I have no desire to become filthy rich and buy a plane, yatch, a fleet of cars, or live in a mansion.

I’m happy with a modest home, good family, good friends and good music. If I ever do aquire a lot of wealth, I will most likely give it away.

Ok, I can play this game too.

Ron Paul–candidate of choice for the Scientifically Trained Matriarchy.

Yep. Ron Paul’s the man for many moms and dads everywhere. Hooray!

I’m sorry, did you have a point to make?

  142. Rattlesnake Jake   17 years ago

“Ron Paul–candidate of choice for the White Patriarchy.”

Ron Paul–candidate of choice for those who value individual freedom and individual responsibility.

  143. MCW   17 years ago

“I’m sorry, did you have a point to make?”

My point is that Ron Paul is anti-choice, which makes him a supporter of Patriarchy.

Hes also anti-Civil Rights and against Affirmative Action, which means he supports the white power structure.

    Thus, he supports white patriarchy.

  144. Middle Class Worker   17 years ago

“Ron Paul–candidate of choice for those who value individual freedom and individual responsibility for priveleged white males.

    Fixed that for you.

  145. miche   17 years ago

Do you have a dog in the anti-choice hunt? By that I mean have you ovaries?

  146. MCW   17 years ago

“Do you have a dog in the anti-choice hunt? By that I mean have you ovaries?”

No, but that doesn’t mean you can’t support reproductive rights. Any candidate that doesn’t favor reproductive rights as anti-woman and sexist.

  147. miche   17 years ago

And you playing protector of our ovaries doesn’t seem a bit sexist to you?

  148. miche   17 years ago

    MCW,
Are you a man of color?

  149. Rattlesnake Jake   17 years ago

“Ron Paul–candidate of choice for those who value individual freedom and individual responsibility”

Individual freedom doesn’t pertain only to white males. Individual freedom is for all.

  150. Bronwyn   17 years ago

    *sigh*

Have you even read Ron Paul’s position papers? There are some fundamental principles at work here, and you are clearly missing just about all of them. Instead of making simple-minded misinterpretations, try thinking for once.

/Got dammit, I fed the troll. How many points do I lose for that?

  151. Rattlesnake Jake   17 years ago

    “try thinking for once.”

Thinking requires too much hard work. It’s easier to parrot envious Marxist statements.

  152. Imhotep   17 years ago

    MCW,
Are you a man of color?

MCW is a man of all colors, like Joe Hill:

“From San Diego up to Maine,
    in every mine and mill,
    where working-men defend their rights,
it’s there you find Joe Hill,
it’s there you find Joe Hill!”

  153. MCW   17 years ago

Miche, are you a drug user or prostitute? I don’t think so, but you still believe drugs and prostitution should be legal, correct?

  154. Bronwyn   17 years ago

RJ, you’re right. How much easier life must be for those who choose the path of willful ignorance!

  155. Sam Grove   17 years ago

MCW must be a fan of the empire.

  156. miche   17 years ago

Miche, are you a drug user or prostitute? I don’t think so, but you still believe drugs and prostitution should be legal, correct?

Neither is your business but I don’t generally go around arguing that either “crime” is racist or sexist in nature. I tend to think about decriminalization based on self ownership. (Legalization somehow indicates that the government has authority to grant permission.)

  157. Bronwyn   17 years ago

MCW, Ah HAH! You made the argument for us, you’re such a sweetie.

See that? No, you probably don’t.

    Here I’ll help you.

I would never have an abortion. I have never and will never misuse mind-altering substances. I have never and will never sell my sex.

BUT (And here’s the important part, so pay attention!)

I would never be so presumptuous as to tell our entire nation’s worth of adults that they must choose as I have. All I ask is that each person takes responsibility for the consequences of their actions.

Ron Paul feels the same way.

Individual liberty and personal responsibility for everyone. This is known as self ownership, as miche said.

It’s an important principle, so maybe you’ll want to read it over a few times. I even bolded it for you.

  158. dpotts   17 years ago

UGH! Ron Paul simply believes that human life begins at conception, and therefore, that life has natural, inalienable rights as well. It’s a reasoned, consistent, and logical position – not the contradiction you’re making it out to be, MCW. There are plenty of people who support RP, and disagree with him on this, and think that life really doesn’t begin until a fetus is viable.

I know I’m feeding the trolls, and I apologize to everyone, but I’m really fucking fed up with single issue voters.

  159. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

but I’m really fucking fed up with single issue voters.

Oh potts, SIV isn’t going to be pleased. Not at all. 🙂

  160. The Wine Commonsewer   17 years ago

I might also point out that there are certain groups who consider the Libertarian Party to be anti-choice because it opposes tax-funded abortions.

Aside from that, RP does believe that life begins at conception, which I believe is a stronger position that he once had. However, his platform is that abortion rights are not a federal matter and that the feds should not take an interest one way or another.

That is a significant distinction that has escaped our troll de jur.

  161. R C Dean   17 years ago

The wonderful thing about Ron Paul is that, given his limited government principles, many of his beliefs (abortion, evolution, whatever) are utterly irrelevant to his proposed governance of the country.

So many people can’t imagine that any area of life shouldn’t be subject to the Total State that they literally cannot comprehend the limited government mindset. Because their mind works on the “I want it, so government should do it” track that they cannot grasp what Ron Paul (and libertarianism) is all about.

  162. pdog   17 years ago

    MCW:

At what point in time do you believe that you become an actual human being, with full rights to life that everyone deserves?

  163. Eric the .5b   17 years ago

Who on here will seriously deny that the typical so-called “libertarian” is A) white, B) male, and C) upper-middle class or rich?

I don’t think I know a single libertarian who meets all three of criteria. Hell, I don’t think I know any libertarians who meet that third criterion.

I work as a programmer and pay a mortgage, but I’ve had coastal Blue fanboys and lefties try to tell me a single man on my income is “poor”, which I find telling of either their income and arrogance or just their provincial ignorance.

But ehn. Once you realize that absolutely nobody here meets your “white, male fatcat” stereotype, you’ll take the next step and shift your perception to the “mindless puppets of the rich” stereotype, which, being impossible to disprove, you’ll cling to like a soft, fuzzy teddy bear.

  164. Nick   17 years ago

I’m white (fuck Ireland/Germany/Blegium for turning out us pasty mother f’ers, how dare they?). I’m male and I like my cock so I plan to keep it. I’m not rich by any stretch, but I’d like to be. I’m not greedy if that’s what you really meant, MCW.

I like how you said libertarians want you to work 14 hour days and have starving children. Where do libertarians say anyone has to do anything they don’t want to do? The whole point of liberty is to be free. Who would force you to work 14 hour days? We would oppose that force.

Now if you are dumb enough to work at a job where they have 14 hour work days, that’s your problem. If you don’t make enough money to feed your children, you shouldn’t have children, dumbass. How about you take care of yourself and stop trying to make everyone else take care of you and your kids?

There you go troll, a can of responsibility for dinner.

  165. Bronwyn   17 years ago

Nick cooks up a mean pot o’ responsibility! Yummy!
