Choose Your Own Impeachment Adventure: Rand Paul, Justin Amash, or Philip K. Dick?
A range of libertarian-world approaches to the impending trial of Donald Trump

Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) made headlines Sunday answering skeptical questions about his anti-impeachment approach from CNN's Jake Tapper. Paul's friend Rep. Justin Amash (I–Mich.) also made headlines Sunday after The Washington Post reported that Democrats are seeking his pro-impeachment counsel for when impeachment goes to the Senate for trial. It's not the first time the two libertarian-leaners have been on opposite ends of the I-question, but…well, can you imagine the theatrics? And what does this tell us about libertarian conflict over the process?
Thus begins today's Reason Roundtable podcast, with editors Nick Gillespie, Peter Suderman, Katherine Mangu-Ward, and Matt Welch, though not before immediately veering down a Philip K. Dick rabbit hole which feels strangely apt for our times. The Podcastic Four also chew on last week's British elections, the upcoming Democratic presidential debate, Washington's bipartisan orgy of deficit spending, and kids doing Dungeons & Dragons stuff on TikTok, because we have a brand to protect.

So you're saying you're not a man of action?
*Snicker* Impeach the president? Why stop there? I can think of plenty of other politicians who need impeaching: Pelosi, Warren, Schiff, Schumer, AOC and her whole Jew-hating squad, our douchebag governor, grinning Grijalva, our local mayor and all his cronies... Throw them all out! Throw ALL the bums out!
Did I mention that I'm an ideological Anarchist?
Respect.
Yeah, I’m one too. Hopefully there are more of us around here than a casual reading of commentary would suggest.
I would be all for impeachment of all of them. The only problem is that Impeaching them probably just leads to more bums with equally bad, power-grabby ideas being elected to replace them.
Didn’t that Greta girl recently suggest a wall-oriented way to take care of all the world’s overlords? Perhaps she’s on to something.
Inspector Clouseau.
Rand and Justin on opposite sides,,,,,, Bad Optics.
I think we should officially ban anyone not named Isaac Newton from using the term Optics.
Geez, I've rarely seen anyone get so totally crushed as Rand was.
Other than Mike Hihn, of course.

"A range of libertarian-world approaches to the impending trial of Donald Trump"?
There's really no "range." If you oppose removing Drumpf from office, you aren't really a libertarian.
#TrumpUkraine
#TrumpRussia
That can't be true. Just look at all the impeachment articles on Reason.
If you oppose removing anyone from office, you might want to consider turning in your libertarian card. Just saying.
I think there should be an automatic mid-term impeachment trial for ANY elected position. Or an automatic recall election. Whichever is more appropriate for the jurisdiction in question.
How about just an automatic 5 year prison sentence for corruption upon leaving office?
And yet you never ever even one time in your entire life suggested that until Trump was elected. What a weird coincidence. Probably just slipped your mind while you were seeing if you tickle Obama's frenulum with your tonsils for 8 consecutive years.
How cute. The dumbass thinks libertarianism is anarchism.
Dumbo, ever heard about AnCap or Murray Rothbard? Libertarianism is an Anarcho-capitalism in a nutshell.
Ancap is basically the original US system: only property owners can vote and states can do what they want.
Bingo
There is a range.
A person leaning Libertarian, would want Trump Removed.
A Libertarian, would want Trump removed, and then re-elected in 2020.
1. This would make heads explode on the left.
2. So long as Congress is a house divided and busy investigating Trump, they pass fewer laws.
Bit the laws they do pass are worse as they buy off each others votes.
I'd prefer to keep the office empty for 4 years and see how that works out.
You want the federal bureaucracy to run completely without political supervision? What could possibly go wrong!
Cool, I took a class with Kim Stanley Robinson, and he assigned us to read Phillip K. Dick! (Not Valis, he had us read Ubiq, which is not quite so readable).
Ubik is very "readable". Valis is shit.
Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said and The Man in the High Castle are both pretty good as well as readable.
>>>the two libertarian-leaners
please give up this ghost.
This must be fake news; libertarians don't lean, they stand tall on their own two feet.
You didn't build those feet.
Nothing like LINOs at reason endorsing fake Libertarian desires to witch hunt the best President in 80+ years.
Do you read anything outside of breitbart and fox? You haven't read any of the foundations of libertarianism if you think Trump is a libertarian or even compatible with libertarian beliefs.
Foundations of Libertarianism? Burke? Locke? Patrick Henry? Lysander? Or Rand? Mises? Hayek? Rothbard? Goldwater? Paul?
Which sock is this goofball from again?
I for one have long advocated for treating our elected officials as God-Kings like the Egyptians treated their pharaohs, complete with the elaborate funerary rituals, the mummifications and the entombment in splendid sarcophagi, provided the ceremonies take place immediately upon completion of their term of office.
Sure. Think how well the Cold War wouldve ended with suicidal egomaniacs in charge. Oh, wait.
what has been revealed is the FBI and the media are all part of the same globalist neoliberalism that Reason has been carrying water for since 2016.
Did you raise 400k? cool, I guess... The Intercept raised over 2 million. Maybe you should, as "libertarians," attack the abuse of power that's been the media, the intelligence agencies, and the democrat party working together to subvert the will of the voters.
Then again, learning to code can't hurt

It depends on if you want woke libertarianism or are rational and understand as bad as Trump is it could be much much worse. What exactly did Trump do wrong? He asked another country to investigate a leading political candidate for the Presidency to see if he was involved in corruption and possibly be blackmailed if elected. Wow sounds like what Obama/Clinton did to Trump on much less evidence. Again one could make the argument he was doing his job when he asked.
Am I happy with Trump..no. He at least hasn't started any wars like Bush and Obama but he needs to bring all the troops home. He is asking our free loading EU NATO countries to start paying their own way. He did get rid of ridiculous regulations and cut taxes. He didn't stop deficit spending (cutting most federal agencies founded after 1920 and entitlement programs). He is trying to address the massive generational trade deficits (albeit not quite understanding the real problem...the Fed inflating the money supply and allowing trading partners to peg). And finally stopping the open borders insanity...libertarians should understand the threat of woke democracy destroying our natural rights. We got FDR due to the massive immigration from areas like Russia and Eastern Europe which had some unhealthy obsession with socialism and from Southern Europe which tended to vote for "big daddy". With out decades of assimilation you risk having a govt elected which will take the BOR and flush it down the toilet..do you really want identify politics as the rule?
Not sure about Amash anymore...but he would be another Gary Johnson for President..Sarwark might like the left libertarians but they after open borders and legal pot...not much there.
Ron Paul would have been my choice as president..hell even Rand but it is what it is..
