Inflation Isn't Imaginary
Plus: Chinese border-crossers, gender transitions for kids, the politics of raw milk, and more...

What we know about the inflation report: A new Consumer Price Index report was released this morning.
"Overall inflation is expected to hold steady at 3.1 percent on an annual basis. That's down notably from a 9.1 percent high in 2022, but still quicker than the roughly 2 percent that was normal before the 2020 pandemic," reports The New York Times. "After stripping out volatile food and fuel costs for a better sense of the underlying trend, inflation is expected to moderate to 3.7 percent, down from 3.9 percent in January compared with a year earlier."
"The core consumer price index, excluding food and energy, probably rose 0.3% in February," according to Bloomberg's economists Anna Wong and Stuart Paul. Though the news is not bad, per se, "we don't expect the February CPI report to provide clear enough evidence of disinflation to boost the Fed's confidence to cut rates," report Wong and Paul.
Of course, the month-over-month jump matters for people's perceptions of inflation, and the mixed findings in the latest report don't mean people feel financially recovered: part of the Federal Reserve's approach was jacking up the interest rate—to 5.3 percent, the highest rate since the 2007-'08 recession—which means housing transactions have slowed. It's expensive for people to borrow right now, and that has massive economic effects, including making people feel stuck in their existing housing situations since it's an expensive time to buy.
"Shelter inflation is not cooling as quickly as hoped," notes the Times, and "various kinds of insurance—including car, medical and property protection—are costing more."
Everything is not, in fact, peachy: Pollsters have been left scratching their heads wondering why consumer sentiment does not appear to be particularly positive, even though a recession has been somewhat narrowly avoided. I wonder if it's at least in part because people sense political dishonesty about how we got into this mess in the first place.
"Democrats were willing to tolerate some inflation when they passed the American Rescue Plan in 2021—perhaps underestimating or forgetting how much people hate rising prices—but they also argue that this particular bout was mostly caused by production and shipping delays, as well as unpredictable shifts in what people were spending money on," notes a lengthy Politico feature from last month. "The [Biden] administration has also put blame on companies for taking advantage of the moment. White House economic adviser Lael Brainard told reporters…that consumer brands and grocery store chains need to bring down their pricing from pandemic-era levels."
It seems like that potent mixture of stubborn inflation, elevated interest rates, and political blameshifting leads to people feeling bad about the economy, even if things are trending in the right direction.

QUICK HITS
- "Sitting among the traveling press on campaigns of people like John Kerry and Barack Obama, I heard how campaign reporters talked, how they thought of their jobs," writes Matt Taibbi over at Racket News. "They were fiercely protective of their gatekeeping role, which gave them enormous power. If reporters didn't think a candidate was good enough for them—if he was too 'kooky' like Ron Paul, too 'elfin' like Dennis Kucinich, or too 'lazy' as just a handful of influential reporters decided about Fred Thompson—the 'Boys on the Bus' would snort and trade cutting remarks in riffing sessions before and after events. Campaigns would be elevated or die in these moments. I thought it was crazy, and said so in print, which made me a pariah, and I never thought it would end. Then Trump came along and destroyed the whole system with one stroke, getting elected in spite of the blunt disapproval of media."

They were fiercely protective of their gatekeeping role, which gave them enormous power.
Well, it's gone now.
What, did you not renew your sustaining membership with NPR?
Like infrastructure in dem run cities, the gates just broke down.
If you give them the 100B they ask for, state funded, those gates can be repaired.
No, the powers that be would ask for another $100 billion because they need to buy that bitchin' mansion in the Bahamas, another four Porsches and trips to Las Vegas to feed their gambling addiction.
Nor am I going to cough up bucks for this non-libertarian site.
Can we start a pool in when the free-loaders get the ax?
My guess not until they get enough to pay to not make this a ghost town. Imagine comments with sarc, jeff, shrike, and sqrsly being the only contributors.
Maybe
ENBMike Laursen will come back.He won't. You guys succeeded in driving him off like you do with most newbies who expresses libertarian views in these comments.
Oh the humanity!
You misspelled "liberaltarian". Probably autocorrect.
I mean laissez faire economics and non-aggression principle. People who express those beliefs are guaranteed to be attacked.

I mean laissez faire economics and non-aggression principle. People who express those beliefs are guaranteed to be attacked.
If you actually knew what those things were, and expressed those beliefs, you wouldn't be attacked. You and Liarson are peas in a Biden-loving pod.
Awe, poor sarc.
Mike wasn’t a newbie, he’d literally been posting here since at least 2009.
You would think surviving SugarFree’s posts, White Indian/Mary Stack, and the various flame wars that he’d have grown a thicker skin.
Mike Liarson was a squawking bird named Dee and he was treated as such.
Sarc’s on record claiming he’s not paying. But just to have them commenting would be a travesty.
Funny how their philosophy is Gatekeeping for me, but not for thee, U.S.

One of the few of his achievements worthy of appreciation.
...two teenage boys were charged under a 2022 Florida law for allegedly creating AI-generated [nude] images depicting middle school classmates," reports Wired.
The boys failed to even race swap their fake depiction.
Let them try again with the new CRT-based AI.
At this point they're probably going to have to charge every single teenage boy in the county, plus a few of their teachers. Every angel can be a centerfold for today's teens.
Just glad it wasn't against the law to mock teachers by crudely placing their faces on gay porn back in the day. Missed that bullet.
How much gay porn did you have? Why?
We had a little thing called the internet.
lol objection: nonresponsive
That's what he/she said.
Overruled, I said I had access to Internet, which answers 1. How much; all of it and 2. Why; because the internet was, is and always will be porn.
lol I love it.
Jeez, we got our porn--such as it was--in a much more difficult fashion. First, Dad would sometimes buy a Playboy, or on rare and treasured occasions, a Penthouse. Usually when he had been on a business trip. Mom would notice it, chastise Dad a bit, then see that it was thrown away ASAP. My brother and I became adept at hearing those small arguments, esp. when Dad came home from trips, and that rifling through the trash later might produce a prize.
Had that too. Grew up as the internet was taking hold, so my dad was still analog while we were learning the joys of the digital age.
Yep. All 10 digits.

Well, that's in my head now.
Former President Trump vowed Monday to 'free' Jan. 6 rioters as one of his first acts if he's elected for a second term in November...

This one is the cream of the crop.
Greener pastures.
What's your beef anyway?
The article is actually worth a read. Main thesis is basically liberals trust the “experts” now, and conservatives don’t. Hippies were always fighting “The Man”, but now that they are “The Man” things are different.
And by "man" they mean gender-fluid but mostly female-ish Karen-nanny.
Main thesis is basically liberals trust the “experts” now, and conservatives don’t.
Same with "vaccinations", no?
Yes, which the article makes a point of too.
Yes. The politics of health foods has long interested me, as it's long been a crossover issue, but fragmented into sub-issues that can polarize unpredictably. What I found disturbing starting in the 1990s was people I know having their judgments about facts determined by opinions, rather than vice versa. I know a libertarian who started out agitating decades ago for health freedom, but then to bolster his points (to get non-libertarians on his side, sensibly because libertarians alone can't sway public opinion enough) he became so imbued in the evidence favoring one side that he neglects the evidence on the other. So it changed from "you should be allowed to do this" to "this is better for you".
The hippies all love Michael Mann. And if ever a man was the man, it's Mann.
It is udderly ridiculous indeed!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Louis Pasteur wasted too much good beer coming up with The Germ Theory of Disease to now take up drinking raw milk!

That's how I identify. And you sapiens owe me for genocide.
No we don't. Neanderthals stuck with big game like mammoths and we Homo Sapiens diversified into smaller animals. Diversifying the palate means more to eat when biological, environmental, and migratory conditions change.
As both Charles Darwin and Thomas Sowell observed, there's a reason for these things.
And if you're really Neanderthal, you guys obviously didn't die off.

Many Europeans are shown to have a bit of Neanderthal descent. If that's Jerry B.'s heritage, than he has as much claim to his identity as Elizabeth Warren does with her Native American claims.
But alas, DNA test results don't matter anymore, it's really all whatever your brain wants and we all must revolve around that decision!
Didn't ENB heartthrob Matt YGlesias do the same in NYC? Taking pics of the plates of parking violations and sending them in.

The CDC "released" a 148 page study on myocarditis after COVID-19 "vaccination" and every single page is completely redacted. This must be a new record.
This is the CDC study on myocarditis and the covid mrna vax. Every single word was redacted.
Maybe I'm missing something, but how is it ever appropriate for the CDC to redact anything?
They used the redaction clause FYTW.
Because [redacted].
You see?
Have you slept through the entire mis/disinformation revolution?
They’re allowed to redact anything that makes them look bad.
Besides patient personal info, never.
How is it appropriate to redact the study. Doesn't redaction only happen when a document is classified or when ordered by a judge? Shouldn't it include a description of why it is redacted?
Looked at one of the documents, and there were some places where it was clear that Teams meeting numbers, phone numbers, things like that were redacted. I can understand that privacy concerns and active conference numbers might need to be considered.
But to nuke page after page after page after page in their entirety cannot be right.

There is literally not one single way "illegal immigration" impacts anyone's life in any way, unless you feel strongly about bland food.
I've seen a few things like that. As if flavorful and exotic food hasn't been readily available everywhere in the US for many decades.
The entire spice trade since Alexander the Great is confused as well.
I've never bought into the "white people food is bland" argument. Mexican food in the US is really Tex-Mex, pizza as we know it is American, creole cooking has French roots but is also distinctly American.
True in Texas. Arizona is Sonoran style and South California is more Baja style. And yes, tex mex is the worst of the 3.
A lot of traditional northern European food is fairly bland and I think it was true of a lot of American food for a long time. Different on southern border states I'm sure, but my New England grandparents had salt and pepper and a few spices for baking and that's about it.
Caribbean food ranges between especially bland and especially spicy. But you can say the same about Caribbean music. Very different cultures united by a sea.
Outside of a couple servings of fish, the food in Ireland was all quite bland.
Yeah, but undocumented food has extra zest.

Democrats were willing to tolerate some inflation when they passed the American Rescue Plan in 2021—perhaps underestimating or forgetting how much people hate rising prices...
Almost like whatever you call what they did from 2020 to 2023 turned out not to be worth whatever political/financial gain they got.
You all remember ACA and the medicaid expansion. How suits were pushed making it so states could opt out and not be required to expand. It turns out the states who chose not to expand are spending a lot less than those that did expand. And the states who are going bankrupt continue to expand by expanding medicaid to illegal immigrants, like California.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/medicaid-expansion-was-supposed-pay-itself-instead-hospitals-are-closing
The lower payment rate and more Medicaid enrollees—especially those forced out of private coverage—mean increased Medicaid shortfalls, contributing to lower profit margins. This increases pressure on hospitals’ bottom lines, especially for rural hospitals where fewer patients make it more difficult to make up the shortfalls. The result is hospital closures in expansion states across the country. New data from the Department of Health and Human Services shows just how dire the situation is for hospitals in expansion states.
.
Hospitals in expansion states were in better financial shape before they expanded—but this has since flipped.
.
The reason for this flip in financial stability in expansion states is that hospitals count on private payers to make up for the reduced payments provided by Medicaid. In non-expansion states, private payers averaged payments of 128 percent of hospital costs, whereas Medicaid averaged only 76 percent of costs.
This analysis also shows how much of a cost shift is put on private plans from underpayment from Medicaid and government programs. Something many people deny.
Key Findings
Medicaid does not pay enough to cover hospitals’ costs, meaning hospitals need to make up for the shortfall by charging private payers more.
.
In expansion states, hospitals’ Medicaid shortfalls have reached $22.3 billion, increasing by 117 percent since 2013.
.
If non-expansion states were to expand, their hospitals’ Medicaid shortfalls would more than double, from $6.3 billion to $13.2 billion.
Non-expansion states should continue to say no to Medicaid expansion, and expansion states should work to roll it back.
Direct link to analysis.

It's expensive for people to borrow right now, and that has massive economic effects, including making people feel stuck in their existing housing situations since it's an expensive time to buy.
Hasn't stopped credit card debt surging past 1T.
That means the economy, aka Bidenomics, is booming, right?
Just ask Pluggo.
Hasn’t stopped credit card debt surging past 1T.
Stopped it from surging? It caused it to surge. It's a lot easier to get a credit card, or to run up an existing card, than to get a (non-student) loan.
There are apparently reddit groups dedicated to living off credit and then declaring bankruptcy. And they justify it as fair.
Well, they spent all their student loans on new iPhones and clothes that they’ll wear once, so…
In the context of massive bank bailouts and TBTF federal policies? I can’t say I blame them for that reasoning.
Pollsters have been left scratching their heads wondering why consumer sentiment does not appear to be particularly positive, even though a recession has been somewhat narrowly avoided.
Solely from increased government spending which is additive to the GDP calculations.
The cost of doing anything is up markedly in the last 3 years. The lowest 2/3 are getting fucking pummeled by prices and interest rates. Interest rates needed to normalize, but the fact that a mortgage has increased so much has priced most people out of affording a house, but rent is higher than ever.
With AIRBnB collapsing, many markets are finally seeing rent stabilize or slightly decrease.
Unfortunately, for many towns, tourism is one of a few mechanisms for bringing dollars into the community. So while AIRBnB carpetbaggers cater to those wealthy invaders, while screwing the poor locals, without the tourist dollars nobody can live there, even if rent is free.
I see more people doing day trips. Skipping the overnight stay and skipping the restaurants.
30 year wait list to get a short term rental license in some places around here. This is going to make a handful of existing owners rich and kill tourism at the same time.
Even without that - people's pay hasn't stabilized with the higher prices.
So, sure, we're not in a recession and inflation is almost back to normal - but I didn't get a pay raise over the last three years either.
Ignoring purchasing things, inflation doesn't effect me

Other Detroiters here might recall Pistons ownership saying just a few months ago, "other than winning, we're doing a great job."
They’ve managed to trade places with the Lions somehow.
I've gotten so used to the Lions sucking for so long I just can't wrap my head around it. They've been comical, but now they're like a real team. Hard to accept it as real.
Lol. In a league where just one great player can drastically change a teams fortunes, the pistons are consistently bad.
Thought the Red Wings had made some progress but they look pretty fragile lately too.
Oh well. Go Lions.

“This economic measure that doesn’t include what poor people spend all their money on isn’t explaining why poor people think the economy is so bad. We need to increase the propaganda so they understand how stupid they are.”
'"Overall inflation is expected to hold steady at 3.1 percent on an annual basis. That's down notably from a 9.1 percent high in 2022, but still quicker than the roughly 2 percent that was normal before the 2020 pandemic," reports The New York Times.'
And if we want to compare these numbers to inflation rates calculated the "old" way, say in 1970, we probably have to double them.
The only way to eliminate inflation is to change the definition.
"After stripping out volatile food and fuel costs for a better sense . . . "
Why stop with stripping out the two things everybody HAS to purchase?
Just strip out everything and inflation drops to zero.
'Pollsters have been left scratching their heads wondering why consumer sentiment does not appear to be particularly positive, even though a recession has been somewhat narrowly avoided.'
Would those pollsters work mostly for (or in) the official DNC-government-media-academia complex?
Wall Street and Corporate America are doing great, and phony jobs reports that end up getting revised down by half every time hide a middle/working class that's collapsing under inflation, interest rates and energy prices.
"The [Biden] administration has also put blame on companies for taking advantage of the moment. White House economic adviser Lael Brainard told reporters…that consumer brands and grocery store chains need to bring down their pricing from pandemic-era levels."
Bunch of counter-revolutionary kulaks!
Somehow, the idea that every company in America got together and colluded to increase prices all at the same time isn't a conspiracy theory.
Yeah, we laughed about that at the last Privileged White Man meeting.
"that consumer brands and grocery store chains need to bring down their pricing from pandemic-era levels."
And what does Lael have to say about things that are more expensive than they were during the pandemic? Not much, I bet.
Scenes from New York: A must-read piece, "From China to New York, by Way of the Southern Border," from The New York Times.
Nothing in the NYT is must read. There. I said it.
This.
It's time we respected the NYT for what it is, a terrible local newspaper that couldn't write or fact check itself out of a wet paper bag. Did I mention I see no reason to read a terrible local New York City paper? I have terrible local papers of my own.
It's true. They ruined any reputation they might have once had, long before Duranty, and their recent shenanigans have just cemented it. I might trust their sportsball score reporting, but I might not either.
"Then Trump came along and destroyed the whole system with one stroke, getting elected in spite of the blunt disapproval of media."
Since the media is an official branch of government, they have the authority to protect democracy, right?
Aha! There’s the insurrection charge.
"Former President Trump vowed Monday to 'free' Jan. 6 rioters as one of his first acts if he's elected for a second term in November," reports Axios.
What a fascist. Unlike Joe who has a goal to lock up 2000 J6 rioters. Using laws in ways they weren't written. And judges using sentencing guidelines struck down by appeals courts. True freedom is locking up your opponents and unequal application of justice.
Should be pointed out less than a quarter of those spending months in jail committed any violence or damage.
Including a reporter whose name can't be said at Reason.
That wasn't a "peaceful protest" not enough arson or assault to get favorable treatment by the marxists on the regime press.
Yeah but if Trump pardons them the parading will get completely out of control.

Joke's on you, I'm having all of my baby teeth reinstalled.
“the moral case for letting trans kids change their bodies.”
Meanwhile “the moral case for letting gays change their orientation” remains illegal.
It's fine to chop off little Johnny's dick because his Munchausen-addled mother needs bragging points for her psychotic peers.
But if Jim wants a wife and kids and asks for help developing an attraction to women, lock em all up and throw away the key.
Society is now evil.
It used to be dogma that African tribal female genital mutilation was the scourge of the earth, an unimaginable evil.
It used to be dogma that homosexuality was genetically determined, not a choice, not something that could be reversed. This was the basis for banning gay conversion therapy.
It used to be dogma that chemical castration was too evil for even voluntary use by convicted rapists and pedophiles.
Now it's dogma that it is woke teachers' duty to "encourage" their kindergarten kids to want to change their gender with puberty blockers, chemical castration, and gender mutilation surgery, all without the parents' knowledge. Washington and California have actually made it illegal child abuse for parents to stop their children's "gender affirmation" surgery and will take their children away.
Unpopular opinion; male genital mutilation, (circumcision), should also be illegal until 18.
Seriously, ritual male genital mutilation has been tolerated and promoted for centuries. Ritual female genital mutilation is a human rights violation. The logic has always escaped me.
I'm a helmet and it hasn't affected me any, aside from keeping it clean and phimosis free. There's a world of difference between some extra skin and having your junk chopped off.
The equivalent of removing an earlobe versus chopping off your head.
I still don't think we should be cutting off infant's earlobes. You're right, it's better than cutting off your whole head, still doesn't make it a good thing IMO.
If it stops the ear from getting dirty and infected, why not?
I’m a helmet and it hasn’t affected me any
It has, you’re just inured to your scarred genitals.
As far too many of us are.
We function, but not as we should because part of our body was cut off to save the bother of washing it.
Or because some vile desert tribesmen had a god that demanded such mutilation as a sign of piety.
Either reason is disgusting.
Thanks for sharing your blatant antisemitism. You have been noted.

Hollywood Right wing Christian nationalists seem to do a lot of things that are the opposite of right wing Christian nationalism.

Vinyl records are now so hot they move UK inflation
The prices of vinyl records will feed into UK inflation statistics for the first time since 1992, highlighting a surge in their popularity among British consumers driven in part by Taylor Swift.
.
The Office for National Statistics published its annual update Monday to the basket of more than 700 goods and services it uses to measure inflation. This year, the ONS added 16 items and removed 15 to better reflect what consumers are now typically spending their money on.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/11/business/vinyl-records-uk-inflation-basket/index.html
Cheesy-Poofs, spittin' tobacky and now vinyl records? Obviously Joe Biden's fault that vinyl records are skyrocketing in price.
When will this inflation monster end?

Other new items in this year’s inflation basket highlight the wider adoption of healthier lifestyles. These items include air fryers, rice cakes, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, as well as spray oils, which can be dispensed more sparingly and some of which contain less fat than regular cooking oils.
.
“The air fryer has cemented its place on many a kitchen counter over the last few years with expenditure increasing over 30% between 2021 and 2022,” the ONS said.

re: Pollsters wondering why consumer sentiment is not positive
Disinflation is not a word. It's still inflation. The boat is still sinking. True, we're not sinking as fast as we were a year and a half ago but we're still taking on water. Prices won't "get back to normal" until we have actual deflation. That is, not merely reduce the rate of inflation but actually reverse it. To the ship analogy, not merely slow the rate that we're taking on water but plug the holes and start pumping water out.
Many of you will say that deflation is not possible. And certainly if you confine your analysis to the post-WW2 era, that looks to be the case. But historically, stability or even slight deflation was the norm. Price spikes completely reversed in a matter of years. Even as recently as the Founding, business and other leaders would have been astonished at the idea of perpetual inflation. It is not the norm and it is not healthy.
https://economics-charts.com/chart-of-consumer-price-index-1800-2005/
Look at the wars in particular. Inflation during the war, deflation afterwards. This pattern prevailed until the newly-formed Fed tried to prevent natural deflation following WW I. Luckily for everybody, Woodrow Wilson's stroke prevented making things worse. Unluckily for everybody, Herbert Hoover did not have a stroke and was around to make the 1929 economy worse and give FDR ideas on making it even worse.
Does deflation require increasing productivity? Cuz that ain't gonna happen soon.
Thanks, Gen Z.
IANAE but why should it? Prices rise during wars because the government spends so much; they decrease back to pre-war levels after because spending falls back to pre-war levels.
Meanwhile Brandon wants to spend over 7 trillion a year.
Ron Paul has always made the case that deflation is the inevitable outcome of increased productivity. The natural course of events. This of course would require the elimination of a central bank dictating the price of money.
Yes, you are right. If you have hard money and its supply does not rise with increased population or productivity, prices have to fall in proportion. But contrary to /sarc below, this is nothing to fear, as it happens slowly and naturally, not because some politician gets elected. Similarly, if new gold or silver sources are found faster than population or productivity increase, prices will rise proportionally.
But the US government and practically all others have always mucked around with money and always distorted prices.
Another way to achieve deflation is to reduce the money suopply.
Instead of sopending money, just burn money in a huge bonfire.
I doubt anyone really wants deflation.
"Hey, the value of the dollar is up so we're taking back your last two raises."
If it's general deflation, the cost of goods also falls, the same amount.
Do you really think anyone will really give a shit when their boss cuts their pay?
Creditors and those with assets want deflation. Borrowers want inflation. Contrary to your concern, most families have assets and want them to be worth more in the future. And even of the subset that don't have assets, they plan to get some in the future - and want those assets to hold their value or even appreciate.
re "We're taking back your last two raises" - That's not going to happen. Unlike inflation which can hit double-digits, deflation is historically slower and smaller. What happens instead is "you don't need a raise because the cost of living is down".
re “We’re taking back your last two raises” – That’s not going to happen. Unlike inflation which can hit double-digits, deflation is historically slower and smaller. What happens instead is “you don’t need a raise because the cost of living is down”.
Deflation means that prices are going down. If the business has to lower prices to keep up with deflation, then they're going to have to cut expenses as well. With most employers, employees are one of if not the biggest expense. Logically it makes no sense to me that they can cut prices without cutting labor costs.
Lowering pay is not the only way to reduce expenses.
Smart people understand that a modest cut in a large expense can be more effective than getting drastic with the little things.
The same "smart" people who think that raising the minimum wage to $20 an hour won't result in an increase in prices?
If they are lowering prices, and prices in general are going down, costs of goods would also be going down. Labor also has to meet inflation before your scenario would be a consideration. Right now inflation is outpacing any pay increases.
Stability and periodic deflation were the norm for centuries. In all that time, there are no records of your feared scenario ever happening. Why do you suddenly think it will happen now when it never did before?
I get that you think this is a logical consequence. But when the observed historical record does not align with your logical prediction, you should consider that your hypothesis is incomplete.
Ok, fair enough.
I'm sure Seth riches hit man (umm robber?) will be caught
Pollsters have been left scratching their heads wondering why consumer sentiment does not appear to be particularly positive, even though a recession has been somewhat narrowly avoided
Maybe because a recession has been narrowly avoided only in cooked books. The economy is actually good, but will the people notice? framing is so absurd.
I guess they will just have to democracy for us.
Yeah, this whole “believe the government and their media allies, not your lying eyes and wallets!” bit is getting pretty old.

.....
“There are other Timothy McVeighs out there who will be like ‘[this movie is] exactly what this country needs’ … The potential danger is that [right-wing] groups are not known for media literacy or nuance. And a psychotic gang of rednecks committing terrorism [in the film] to ‘own the libs’ might be obvious criticism to us, but might be interpreted as a role model to MAGA groups if not portrayed carefully.'”

By the way, have you ever denounced the many, many calls to murder everyone left of Trump? No, you attacked me when I did. Did you call out the dehumanizing of immigrants by calling them vermin and poison? No, you defended that with attacks as well. That means you fully support murdering people over politics and country of origin. Seems to be the prevailing attitude here.

LOL, please. Why should any self-respecting middle American lift a finger to put their lives on the line for people who despise them, especially if they're white, and want to convince their kids to cut their genitals off?
"Do not forget that these people want you broke, dead, your children raped and brainwashed, and they think it's funny."
If these places end up getting attacked, let them burn. I have no interest in defending them, and would trade every single one of them for a can of Dr. Pepper.
As if to prove my point:
The bulk of such reactions to Civil War seem to come from the left side of the political spectrum, and their take goes like this: Regardless of the film’s (presumably pro-unity) message, the film is uncomfortably timely and its “us vs. us” warfare will become MAGA fantasy fuel.
Ah, yes, another "unity-criticism-unity" neo-Maoist dialectic from American commies.
And yeah, radical lefties always end up showing their "right-wing monsters" in their satire as aspirational models, especially now that they control the country's cultural institutions from top to bottom. It happened in Robocop and Starship Troopers, it happened in Law-Abiding Citizen, and it's going to happen with Jesse Plemons' redneck soldier, too. Resisting these people is now resisting the establishment, and that's what terrifies them so much.
Further:
There are some on the right who have a different take on the film’s release. Some conspiracy-minded individuals believe the movie is “predictive programming” being released because they (there’s always a “they”) are preparing the public for what’s to come — namely, the Biden administration going to war with Southern states like Texas over the border crisis. Given Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s feud over border security has recently inspired literal “civil war” headlines in respectable publications, one can understand some degree of this concern (though not why the government would collaborate with a Hollywood studio to create a film to give moviegoers a heads up about their sinister plans).
Yeah, an industry that works hand-in-hand with the DNC would NEVER telegraph its intentions, no sireee! Any complaint by right-wingers is always a conspiracy theory (that ends up being shown to NOT be a conspiracy after the fact)!
Also, LOL at half that article simply re-quoting a few choice statements from a reddit thread. What a fucking lazy retard that "journalist" is.
“they (there’s always a “they”) ”
Why do they always do that? Like we don’t know who we’re talking about? Anytime someone tries to do that “Duurrrr, who do you mean when you say they?!” the answer is almost always “You and people like you.”
Note that the snake didn't actually source that assertion with any kind of link, either. It's just a blanket statement to be taken as fact.
Yeah, I can't imagine why anyone on the right might believe would think this isn't a "conspiracy" that's really an effort at a self-fulfilling prophecy.
“Do not forget that these people want you broke, dead, your children raped and brainwashed, and they think it’s funny.”
Who are "these people"? Because that sentence describes the general attitude expressed in these comments towards leftists, immigrants, and anyone else who doesn't support Trump.
Leftists--which should be pretty fucking obvious after, oh, the last 15 years or so.
I still don’t see how that’s any different from the attitudes expressed towards immigrants and Trump critics in these comments. Oh, it's yet another one of those “They did it first so it’s ok” situations.
I don't really give a fuck if it's "different," nor give a fuck about your moralizing.
Seems rather hypocritical to say leftists are evil because "these people want you broke, dead, your children raped and brainwashed, and they think it’s funny" while feeling the same way towards them.
Don’t care if it’s “hypocritical” or not, especially after the last 15 years. The moral high ground is a construct that isn’t really worth defending.

Well, good. It was a power they never really should have had in the first place. Their very elevation to the role of "gatekeeper", their "system", was itself nothing but a corruption of our system. At this point, I'm not even saying this to attack journalists, but for the most part, they're particularly mediocre people. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing per se wrong with mediocre. It's very definition is average. But, their proximity to power let it get into their heads that they're somehow elevated or extraordinary.
Journalists are legitimately some of the stupidest people you can imagine. Crichton's Gell-Mann amnesia effect is real--I've seen articles in my local rag citing quantitative data from a Wikipedia article that I actually edited with the information, that no journalist would have actually known on their own, specifically because the information was a conversion from another set of data in a World War II-era document that only I'd read through in the last 70 years. That opened my eyes to how lazy these people can be.

"Inside the politics of raw milk, which is now trad- or conservative-coded."
I don't care whether it's trad- or conservative-coded, there are two important points to be made here: first, if people want to risk their own health - and, perhaps, their lives - from tuberculosis or brucellosis by drinking unpasteurized milk and the taxpayers don't have to foot the disability or medical bills, knock yourselves out. Of course it's not true. The socialists have ensured that we WILL have to pay for most of the social costs of bad behavior everywhere in America and the world.
More importantly, there is a major alternative to pasteurization that does not affect the nutritional value OR the taste of foods like milk, eggs and honey in any way. Unfortunately, irradiated food is almost completely unavailable in America due to a combination of regulatory hurdles and "radiation" phobia. Irradiation of produce is common and widely accepted in Europe and elsewhere with the only safety concerns so far being to the workers in the irradiation facilities. And so it goes (heavy sigh) ...
Even if taxpayers do have to foot the bill, I didn't ask for it and I shouldn't be punished because some people I don't know decided healthcare should be subsidized without consulting me.
To be fair and to be sure they did consult you and I, and we said no, but they went ahead and did it anyway.
Well, they gave me the opportunity to vote for or against 2 or 3 of the hundreds of assholes who did it. I'm not convinced that really counts.
Whether irradiated food is safe depends on the type of radiation used.
No, it doesn’t. Irradiating food does nothing whatever to the food itself, while almost completely destroying bacteria, viruses, and spores that can cause infectious diseases in consumers. The irradiated food becomes much safer for consumption and in no way becomes even a little unsafe as a result of being exposed to radiation. But by all means feel free to cite a source for different "types" of radiation.
Depends on if the radiation results in nuclear transmutation.
Gamma rays powerful enough to spall protons or neutrons from the nucleus would be powerful enough to turn the food into plasma, so gamma radiation should be safe.
Alpha, beta, and cosmic radiation may induce nuclear transmutation into radioisotopes.
What kind of radiation do you think will make the food unsafe? Ionizing radiation will damage living cells, but doesn’t make anything radioactive that wasn’t beforehand unless it is cranked up to the extremely high levels that can alter atomic nuclei.
Alpha, beta, and cosmic radiation.
Gamma radiation at typical levels are safe for this purpose.
OK, that is possible. But it's pretty easy to limit the energy of alpha or beta radiation so you don't have problems.
I suppose technically correct is the best kind of correct, but if done properly there is no danger to food irradiation.
FDA:
There are three sources of radiation approved for use on foods.
Gamma rays are emitted from radioactive forms of the element cobalt (Cobalt 60) or of the element cesium (Cesium 137). Gamma radiation is used routinely to sterilize medical, dental, and household products and is also used for the radiation treatment of cancer.
X-rays are produced by reflecting a high-energy stream of electrons off a target substance (usually one of the heavy metals) into food. X-rays are also widely used in medicine and industry to produce images of internal structures.
Electron beam (or e-beam) is similar to X-rays and is a stream of high-energy electrons propelled from an electron accelerator into food.
"“Inside the politics of raw milk, which is now trad- or conservative-coded.”"
Seems redundant after years of movie/TV villains nefariously drinking a big glass of milk or claiming that chugging milk is a dog whistle for the alt-right. It should just be assumed they would think the other forms milk from cows are the same.
...
Good and apparently deep reporting. Health foods have been a left-right crossover issue in at least North America since the 1960s, but the particular hobby horses of the "left" and "right" within the health food movement have been nuanced and are increasingly showing evidence of opinion formation via deliberate polarization. So I'm interested.
Ultimately it's a matter of who consider themselves "outside", and how one perceives the shifting "inside" or "mainstream". Increasingly both the "left" and "right" consider themselves outsiders as to their own power, yet insiders as to the truth. They all feel oppressed, put upon, and vacillate between self-impressions of helplessness and power, or even try to hold those contradictions in their heads simultaneously.

Another mass shooting in the ghetto.
when will it stop?
We need harsh, brutal anti-crime measures like sweeping the projects for contraband and banning assault weapons!
Inflation is an invisible tax imposed on the middle class and the poor by the ruling elitist vermin in power.
But don't worry.
Most of your members of Congress and the Senate are millionaires.
So, they won't have to feel the sting of inflation themselves.
Ohhh, you just called someone vermin! Sarc’s gonna be so mad.
It’s getting a lot of airtime, but I find it to be crucially flawed (as do others).
I don’t even know anything about the issue. Nor do I care. But I am relieved that you found the crucial flaw to something – and explained it - in 280 characters.
You ought to care. Proponents are trying to share their sexual delusion with children. They must be stopped.
I am in my late sixties and have to wonder about all these youngsters upset about inflation. I have seen inflation ebb and flow in my lifetime. While it can rise quickly it doesn't disappear as quickly. Right now inflation is stabilizing or decreasing and that is good. Also good is that the Fed's actions have seemed to slow it without creating a recession. Overall, I think people are coming out pretty well. Yes, prices are going up but for most things seems the way things go. Gas a $3.50/gal may seem high but when I got my drivers license it $0.35/gal. Candy bars were a nickel except an Almond Joy cost a dime in my youth. Inflation is important but should be viewed in perspective.
A lot of words for “don’t blame joe”.
Is that you, AJ_Liberty? You sure do use a lot of the same talking points.
Next, he will tell you to get off his lawn.
So you are used to being robbed by central bankers. Doesn't make it right.
Central banks don't create inflation. Inflation is a natural process based on the basic economic principle of supply and demand. Banks can create buffers to dampen market swings and make them more tolerable. It easy to talk about letting the market go where it will but I really doubt that people want to take a ride on that roller coaster.
As if injecting money doesn’t make the ride wilder.
False
Inflation is always more money chasing fewer goods.. and it is enriching the folks who get the money first who benefit who can then invest in hard assets before producer and consumer prices rise. Inflation just doesn't occur due to "animal spirts" but due to increases in credit artificially. It isn't that hard. If the Fed stopped monetizing federal borrowing via the digital printing press and allowed the market to set interest rates prices would head down.
LOL, printing more money literally inflates the currency. Where the fuck do you think the "too much money" side of that equation comes from, you lying-ass dog?
At least when that roller coaster was going, inflation and deflation had dramatic swings, but the general price of goods and services remained relatively static over time. Something you bought for $10 in 1850 still probably cost about $10 in 1910. Save for the Depression and Great Recession, since the establishment of the Fed, $10 in 1913 is now $300.
And you got paid 25 cents an hour - - - - - - - - - - -
"In what appears to be the first criminal case of its kind, two teenage boys were charged under a 2022 Florida law for allegedly creating AI-generated [nude] images depicting middle school classmates," reports Wired.
It is perfectly reasonable to presume that children are too immature to validly consent to the use of their likenesses to create realistic sexually explicit images.

Ouch.
That was probably their last word.
Pretty sure they didn't get to say that one. Probably some form of Arabic for "Fuck!"
Maybe it was their last thought then. Of course, the last thing to go through their head was the aid package.
"I got it!"
Leave it to Slow Joe to turn humanitarian aid into Genocide.
The rest of the packages successfully received by his Hamas allies.
I would love to understand the history of the Allies providing aid to Germany and Japan during the war.
I mean, that sounds absolutely crushing.
Gives new meaning to 'Smash and Grab'
