Person shopping in grocery store | Rob Levine/Newscom
(Rob Levine/Newscom)

What we know about the inflation report: A new Consumer Price Index report was released this morning.

"Overall inflation is expected to hold steady at 3.1 percent on an annual basis. That's down notably from a 9.1 percent high in 2022, but still quicker than the roughly 2 percent that was normal before the 2020 pandemic," reports The New York Times. "After stripping out volatile food and fuel costs for a better sense of the underlying trend, inflation is expected to moderate to 3.7 percent, down from 3.9 percent in January compared with a year earlier."

"The core consumer price index, excluding food and energy, probably rose 0.3% in February," according to Bloomberg's economists Anna Wong and Stuart Paul. Though the news is not bad, per se, "we don't expect the February CPI report to provide clear enough evidence of disinflation to boost the Fed's confidence to cut rates," report Wong and Paul.

Of course, the month-over-month jump matters for people's perceptions of inflation, and the mixed findings in the latest report don't mean people feel financially recovered: part of the Federal Reserve's approach was jacking up the interest rate—to 5.3 percent, the highest rate since the 2007-'08 recession—which means housing transactions have slowed. It's expensive for people to borrow right now, and that has massive economic effects, including making people feel stuck in their existing housing situations since it's an expensive time to buy.

"Shelter inflation is not cooling as quickly as hoped," notes the Times, and "various kinds of insurance—including car, medical and property protection—are costing more."

Everything is not, in fact, peachy: Pollsters have been left scratching their heads wondering why consumer sentiment does not appear to be particularly positive, even though a recession has been somewhat narrowly avoided. I wonder if it's at least in part because people sense political dishonesty about how we got into this mess in the first place.

"Democrats were willing to tolerate some inflation when they passed the American Rescue Plan in 2021—perhaps underestimating or forgetting how much people hate rising prices—but they also argue that this particular bout was mostly caused by production and shipping delays, as well as unpredictable shifts in what people were spending money on," notes a lengthy Politico feature from last month. "The [Biden] administration has also put blame on companies for taking advantage of the moment. White House economic adviser Lael Brainard told reporters…that consumer brands and grocery store chains need to bring down their pricing from pandemic-era levels."

It seems like that potent mixture of stubborn inflation, elevated interest rates, and political blameshifting leads to people feeling bad about the economy, even if things are trending in the right direction.

QUICK HITS

  • "Sitting among the traveling press on campaigns of people like John Kerry and Barack Obama, I heard how campaign reporters talked, how they thought of their jobs," writes Matt Taibbi over at Racket News. "They were fiercely protective of their gatekeeping role, which gave them enormous power. If reporters didn't think a candidate was good enough for them—if he was too 'kooky' like Ron Paul, too 'elfin' like Dennis Kucinich, or too 'lazy' as just a handful of influential reporters decided about Fred Thompson—the 'Boys on the Bus' would snort and trade cutting remarks in riffing sessions before and after events. Campaigns would be elevated or die in these moments. I thought it was crazy, and said so in print, which made me a pariah, and I never thought it would end. Then Trump came along and destroyed the whole system with one stroke, getting elected in spite of the blunt disapproval of media."
  • "In what appears to be the first criminal case of its kind, two teenage boys were charged under a 2022 Florida law for allegedly creating AI-generated [nude] images depicting middle school classmates," reports Wired.
  • "Former President Trump vowed Monday to 'free' Jan. 6 rioters as one of his first acts if he's elected for a second term in November," reports Axios.

            2. Medulla Oblongata   1 year ago

Jeez, we got our porn--such as it was--in a much more difficult fashion. First, Dad would sometimes buy a Playboy, or on rare and treasured occasions, a Penthouse. Usually when he had been on a business trip. Mom would notice it, chastise Dad a bit, then see that it was thrown away ASAP. My brother and I became adept at hearing those small arguments, esp. when Dad came home from trips, and that rifling through the trash later might produce a prize.

              1. Sometimes a Great Notion   1 year ago

Had that too. Grew up as the internet was taking hold, so my dad was still analog while we were learning the joys of the digital age.

The article is actually worth a read. Main thesis is basically liberals trust the “experts” now, and conservatives don’t. Hippies were always fighting “The Man”, but now that they are “The Man” things are different.

        Same with "vaccinations", no?

        1. Roberta   1 year ago

Yes, which the article makes a point of too.

      3. Roberta   1 year ago

Yes. The politics of health foods has long interested me, as it's long been a crossover issue, but fragmented into sub-issues that can polarize unpredictably. What I found disturbing starting in the 1990s was people I know having their judgments about facts determined by opinions, rather than vice versa. I know a libertarian who started out agitating decades ago for health freedom, but then to bolster his points (to get non-libertarians on his side, sensibly because libertarians alone can't sway public opinion enough) he became so imbued in the evidence favoring one side that he neglects the evidence on the other. So it changed from "you should be allowed to do this" to "this is better for you".

      4. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   1 year ago

The hippies all love Michael Mann. And if ever a man was the man, it's Mann.

I've never bought into the "white people food is bland" argument. Mexican food in the US is really Tex-Mex, pizza as we know it is American, creole cooking has French roots but is also distinctly American.

A lot of traditional northern European food is fairly bland and I think it was true of a lot of American food for a long time. Different on southern border states I'm sure, but my New England grandparents had salt and pepper and a few spices for baking and that's about it.

You all remember ACA and the medicaid expansion. How suits were pushed making it so states could opt out and not be required to expand. It turns out the states who chose not to expand are spending a lot less than those that did expand. And the states who are going bankrupt continue to expand by expanding medicaid to illegal immigrants, like California.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/medicaid-expansion-was-supposed-pay-itself-instead-hospitals-are-closing

The lower payment rate and more Medicaid enrollees—especially those forced out of private coverage—mean increased Medicaid shortfalls, contributing to lower profit margins. This increases pressure on hospitals’ bottom lines, especially for rural hospitals where fewer patients make it more difficult to make up the shortfalls. The result is hospital closures in expansion states across the country. New data from the Department of Health and Human Services shows just how dire the situation is for hospitals in expansion states.
    .
Hospitals in expansion states were in better financial shape before they expanded—but this has since flipped.
    .
The reason for this flip in financial stability in expansion states is that hospitals count on private payers to make up for the reduced payments provided by Medicaid. In non-expansion states, private payers averaged payments of 128 percent of hospital costs, whereas Medicaid averaged only 76 percent of costs.

This analysis also shows how much of a cost shift is put on private plans from underpayment from Medicaid and government programs. Something many people deny.

    Key Findings
Medicaid does not pay enough to cover hospitals’ costs, meaning hospitals need to make up for the shortfall by charging private payers more.
    .
In expansion states, hospitals’ Medicaid shortfalls have reached $22.3 billion, increasing by 117 percent since 2013.
    .
If non-expansion states were to expand, their hospitals’ Medicaid shortfalls would more than double, from $6.3 billion to $13.2 billion.

Non-expansion states should continue to say no to Medicaid expansion, and expansion states should work to roll it back.

The cost of doing anything is up markedly in the last 3 years. The lowest 2/3 are getting fucking pummeled by prices and interest rates. Speaking of Boeing...

    https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/faa-audit-finds-dozens-boeing-737-max-production-issues-nyt

The Federal Aviation Administration's six-week audit of the clowns running Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems has found dozens of problems in the 737 Max manufacturing process, according to The New York Times, citing an FAA presentation.

During Boeing's audit, the FAA conducted 89 product reviews, which evaluated the manufacturing process. Of the 89 audits, the planemaker passed 56 but did not meet specific standards in 33, resulting in 97 alleged noncompliance.

The presentation comes two months after a door plug ripped off a 737 Max 9 during an Alaska Airlines flight. Since then, Boeing has come under intense scrutiny over its manufacturing process. The latest findings should concern airlines operating fleets of these planes and passengers.

The audit then focused on Spirit AeroSystems, which makes fuselage or other parts for the 737 Max. According to the presentation, Spirit only passed six audits while failing seven.

FAA investigators noticed mechanics at Spirit using a hotel key card to measure door seals. Some mechanics also used Dawn soap as a "lubricant" during the door fitting process.

Yeah, that sounds safe and obviously "industry standard".

Additionally, the Spirit audit found five problems with the door plug component. It shockingly failed the installation part. The audit also raised concerns about the technicians who carried out the work.

Many of the problems found by auditors fell in the category of now following an "approved manufacturing process, procedure or instruction. Other issues include a lapse in quality control in the manufacturing processes.

It used to be dogma that chemical castration was too evil for even voluntary use by convicted rapists and pedophiles.

Now it's dogma that it is woke teachers' duty to "encourage" their kindergarten kids to want to change their gender with puberty blockers, chemical castration, and gender mutilation surgery, all without the parents' knowledge. I'm guessing this PM doesn't want to be maître d'hôtel to the Donner Dinner Party shaping up in Haiti.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/haiti-prime-minister-ariel-henry-resigns-amid-low-scale-civil-war

Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced Tuesday morning that he will resign after several weeks of chaos and what could be an unfolding low-scale civil war as gangs fight for control.

"The government that I'm running cannot remain insensitive in this situation. There is no sacrifice that is too big for our country," Henry said in a statement, adding, "The government I'm running will remove itself immediately after the installation of the council."

Bloomberg pointed out the power struggle unfolding:

With the Prime Minister absent, other forces have started trying to fill the vacuum. One new political alliance involves former policeman Guy Philippe and ex-presidential candidate and senator Moise Jean Charles. Philippe was behind a 2004 coup and spent several years in US prison on money laundering charges.

In addition, Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherizier, a former policeman turned gang leader, warned that if Henry returned it would unleash a "civil war" and "genocide." While gangs have existed in Haiti for decades, they've grown powerful amid government and private-sector complicity. Today, they control about 80% of the capital of Port-au-Prince and large parts of the countryside.

I mean, for Pete's sake, the gang leader's name is "Barbecue".

    Biden gets fact checked.

    https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/article_f2547402-dfef-11ee-985b-afbbff7bb9f7.html

Multiple reports refute claims made by the Biden administration to justify restricting U.S. liquified natural gas (LNG) exports – the majority of which are exported from Texas and Louisiana ports.

The administration announced it was implementing a temporary pause on pending decisions on exports of LNG to non-Free Trade Agreement countries until the Department of Energy updates “underlying analyses for authorizations.” Among the several reasons it gave for doing so was that increased exports would increase domestic costs, which a Texas Oil & Gas Association report refutes, citing federal data.

Other reasons given were “the perilous impacts of methane on our planet” and to “adequately guard against risks to the health of our communities, especially frontline communities in the United States who disproportionately shoulder the burden of pollution from new export facilities.”

These claims are also refuted by Texans for Natural Gas (TNG), a project of the Texas Independent Producers & Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO), citing federal data.

In 2017, the U.S. became a net exporter of natural gas for the first time since 1957, “primarily because of increased LNG exports,” according to the EIA. The U.S. became a net exporter after Cheniere Energy was the first to export domestically sourced LNG from the Sabine Pass LNG Terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, and from the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas, The Center Square has reported.

As natural gas production and LNG exports exponentially increased, Texas producers also led the United States in emissions reductions, according to several reports published by the Texas Methane & Flaring Coalition, TNG and The Environmental Partnership, The Center Square has reported. As production increased by 345% in the Permian Basin – one of the largest oil and natural gas fields in the world – methane emissions fell by 76% in the most recent decade analyzed. In one year, methane emissions also fell by 20% from 2020-2021, according to its analysis of multiple data sets.

    https://www.thecentersquare.com/issues/public-safety/article_8530a844-e014-11ee-92db-7b19be1217c8.html

FBI Director Christopher Wray on Monday confirmed that a smuggling organization working with the terrorist organization ISIS is funneling criminals through the U.S. border. He also said the FBI is currently investigating its operations that “we’re very concerned about.”

In a U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence hearing held on Monday on worldwide threats to the United States, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, asked Wray about threats coming through the U.S. border.

Rubio also asked if Wray was familiar with “a black market emerging … to sell fake Social Security cards, fake Green Cards.” Wray said he was, and “there is a significant marketplace for different kinds of stolen identity” on the darknet.

Rubio then addressed human smuggling, saying, “There are smuggling networks all over the world that specialize in moving people from all over the world, including from the Middle East, Central Asia, and so forth. Are we aware of any of these smuggling organizations run by, or are conducted by, people that have ties, for example, to ISIS or other terrorist organizations?”

“I want to be a little bit careful how far I can go in an open session,” Wray said, “but there is a particular network that has where some of the overseas facilitators of the smuggling network have ISIS ties that we're very concerned about. What we've been spending enormous amount of effort with our partners and investigating exactly what that network is up to, is something that's again, the subject of our current investigation.”

“But there is a network we're concerned about that has facilitators involved in it that have ties to ISIS?” Rubio asked.

    “Correct,” Wray replied.

There is a solution that the Administration can do, but for some reason refuses to implement it.

Is pushing students to vote for a tax hike ethical?

    https://www.illinoispolicy.org/illinois-policy-institute-ethics-complaint-chicago-teachers-union-pushing-students-to-vote-for-johnson-tax-hike/

The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has announced a “Student Power Forum” taking place on Friday, March 15, which seemingly violates provisions of the Chicago Public Schools Code of Ethics.

In an email announcing the event, CTU Vice President Jackson Potter noted the union is “partnering” with Bring Chicago Home, culminating in a “Parade to the Polls, where students will march to an early voting site.”

Bring Chicago Home is the leading political advocacy organization campaigning in favor of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s $100 million real estate transfer tax increase referendum, which appears on the March 19 ballot. The union has contributed at least $200,000 to Bring Chicago Home. The union and its affiliates are Johnson’s largest campaign financiers, and the union is his former employer.

In his email, Potter writes, “to get involved, the only thing your school needs to do is provide the students!” He then asks teachers to “organize a group of voting age students…” to attend the event.

Per the CPS Code of Ethics, “Employees are permitted to engage in Political Activity on a voluntary basis during non-work hours, vacation, or personal time. Employees are not permitted to engage in Political Activity during any other Board compensated time.”

Political activity is defined as: “Preparing for, organizing, or participating in any political meeting, political rally, political demonstration, or other political event.”

By asking teachers to prepare for and organize students to participate in the Student Power Forum, which is occurring during school hours and organized in part by a political campaign (Bring Chicago Home), it is clear the union is asking its members to violate the CPS Code of Ethics and possibly other state or city provisions.

The so-called TikTok ban is a trojan horse.

The person breaking the new law is deemed to be the U.S. (or offshore) INTERNET HOSTING SERVICE or App Store, not the “foreign adversary.”

If you think this isn’t a Trojan horse and will only apply to TikTok and foreign-adversary social media companies, then contemplate why someone thought it was important to get a very specific exclusion for their internet based business written into the bill:

Apparently, it gives the President power to censor.

re: Pollsters wondering why consumer sentiment is not positive

Disinflation is not a word. It's still inflation. The boat is still sinking. True, we're not sinking as fast as we were a year and a half ago but we're still taking on water. Prices won't "get back to normal" until we have actual deflation. That is, not merely reduce the rate of inflation but actually reverse it. To the ship analogy, not merely slow the rate that we're taking on water but plug the holes and start pumping water out.

Many of you will say that deflation is not possible. And certainly if you confine your analysis to the post-WW2 era, that looks to be the case. But historically, stability or even slight deflation was the norm. Price spikes completely reversed in a matter of years. Even as recently as the Founding, business and other leaders would have been astonished at the idea of perpetual inflation. It is not the norm and it is not healthy.

Look at the wars in particular. Inflation during the war, deflation afterwards. This pattern prevailed until the newly-formed Fed tried to prevent natural deflation following WW I. Luckily for everybody, Woodrow Wilson's stroke prevented making things worse. Unluckily for everybody, Herbert Hoover did not have a stroke and was around to make the 1929 economy worse and give FDR ideas on making it even worse.

      1. Á àß äẞç ãþÇđ âÞ¢Đæ ǎB€Ðëf ảhf   1 year ago

Yes, you are right. If you have hard money and its supply does not rise with increased population or productivity, prices have to fall in proportion. But contrary to /sarc below, this is nothing to fear, as it happens slowly and naturally, not because some politician gets elected. Similarly, if new gold or silver sources are found faster than population or productivity increase, prices will rise proportionally.

But the US government and practically all others have always mucked around with money and always distorted prices.

        1. Michael Ejercito   1 year ago

Creditors and those with assets want deflation. Borrowers want inflation. Contrary to your concern, most families have assets and want them to be worth more in the future. And even of the subset that don't have assets, they plan to get some in the future - and want those assets to hold their value or even appreciate.

re "We're taking back your last two raises" - That's not going to happen. Unlike inflation which can hit double-digits, deflation is historically slower and smaller. What happens instead is "you don't need a raise because the cost of living is down".

Deflation means that prices are going down. If the business has to lower prices to keep up with deflation, then they're going to have to cut expenses as well. With most employers, employees are one of if not the biggest expense. Logically it makes no sense to me that they can cut prices without cutting labor costs.

A24’s ‘Civil War’ Movie Provokes Timing Debate Amid Some Fearing Actual Civil War
The Alex Garland film is sparking discussion about its release during a contentious election year: "The idea of civil war actually keeps me up at night."
    .....
“There are other Timothy McVeighs out there who will be like ‘[this movie is] exactly what this country needs’ … The potential danger is that [right-wing] groups are not known for media literacy or nuance. And a psychotic gang of rednecks committing terrorism [in the film] to ‘own the libs’ might be obvious criticism to us, but might be interpreted as a role model to MAGA groups if not portrayed carefully.'”

LOL, please. Why should any self-respecting middle American lift a finger to put their lives on the line for people who despise them, especially if they're white, and want to convince their kids to cut their genitals off?

"Do not forget that these people want you broke, dead, your children raped and brainwashed, and they think it's funny."

If these places end up getting attacked, let them burn. I have no interest in defending them, and would trade every single one of them for a can of Dr. Pepper.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

As if to prove my point:

The bulk of such reactions to Civil War seem to come from the left side of the political spectrum, and their take goes like this: Regardless of the film’s (presumably pro-unity) message, the film is uncomfortably timely and its “us vs. us” warfare will become MAGA fantasy fuel.

Ah, yes, another "unity-criticism-unity" neo-Maoist dialectic from American commies.

And yeah, radical lefties always end up showing their "right-wing monsters" in their satire as aspirational models, especially now that they control the country's cultural institutions from top to bottom. It happened in Robocop and Starship Troopers, it happened in Law-Abiding Citizen, and it's going to happen with Jesse Plemons' redneck soldier, too. Resisting these people is now resisting the establishment, and that's what terrifies them so much.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

          Further:

There are some on the right who have a different take on the film’s release. Some conspiracy-minded individuals believe the movie is “predictive programming” being released because they (there’s always a “they”) are preparing the public for what’s to come — namely, the Biden administration going to war with Southern states like Texas over the border crisis. Given Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s feud over border security has recently inspired literal “civil war” headlines in respectable publications, one can understand some degree of this concern (though not why the government would collaborate with a Hollywood studio to create a film to give moviegoers a heads up about their sinister plans).

Yeah, an industry that works hand-in-hand with the DNC would NEVER telegraph its intentions, no sireee! Any complaint by right-wingers is always a conspiracy theory (that ends up being shown to NOT be a conspiracy after the fact)!

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

            “they (there’s always a “they”) ”

Why do they always do that? Like we don’t know who we’re talking about? Anytime someone tries to do that “Duurrrr, who do you mean when you say they?!” the answer is almost always “You and people like you.”

            1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

Note that the snake didn't actually source that assertion with any kind of link, either. It's just a blanket statement to be taken as fact.

Yeah, I can't imagine why anyone on the right might believe would think this isn't a "conspiracy" that's really an effort at a self-fulfilling prophecy.

“Do not forget that these people want you broke, dead, your children raped and brainwashed, and they think it’s funny.”

          1. sarcasmic   1 year ago

Seems rather hypocritical to say leftists are evil because "these people want you broke, dead, your children raped and brainwashed, and they think it’s funny" while feeling the same way towards them.

Don’t care if it’s “hypocritical” or not, especially after the last 15 years. The moral high ground is a construct that isn’t really worth defending.

Well, good. It was a power they never really should have had in the first place. Their very elevation to the role of "gatekeeper", their "system", was itself nothing but a corruption of our system. At this point, I'm not even saying this to attack journalists, but for the most part, they're particularly mediocre people. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing per se wrong with mediocre. It's very definition is average. But, their proximity to power let it get into their heads that they're somehow elevated or extraordinary.

Journalists are legitimately some of the stupidest people you can imagine. Crichton's Gell-Mann amnesia effect is real--I've seen articles in my local rag citing quantitative data from a Wikipedia article that I actually edited with the information, that no journalist would have actually known on their own, specifically because the information was a conversion from another set of data in a World War II-era document that only I'd read through in the last 70 years. That opened my eyes to how lazy these people can be.

"Inside the politics of raw milk, which is now trad- or conservative-coded."

I don't care whether it's trad- or conservative-coded, there are two important points to be made here: first, if people want to risk their own health - and, perhaps, their lives - from tuberculosis or brucellosis by drinking unpasteurized milk and the taxpayers don't have to foot the disability or medical bills, knock yourselves out. Of course it's not true. The socialists have ensured that we WILL have to pay for most of the social costs of bad behavior everywhere in America and the world.

More importantly, there is a major alternative to pasteurization that does not affect the nutritional value OR the taste of foods like milk, eggs and honey in any way. Unfortunately, irradiated food is almost completely unavailable in America due to a combination of regulatory hurdles and "radiation" phobia. Irradiation of produce is common and widely accepted in Europe and elsewhere with the only safety concerns so far being to the workers in the irradiation facilities. And so it goes (heavy sigh) ...

    1. Zeb   1 year ago

Even if taxpayers do have to foot the bill, I didn't ask for it and I shouldn't be punished because some people I don't know decided healthcare should be subsidized without consulting me.

      1. Its_Not_Inevitable   1 year ago

To be fair and to be sure they did consult you and I, and we said no, but they went ahead and did it anyway.

        1. Zeb   1 year ago

Well, they gave me the opportunity to vote for or against 2 or 3 of the hundreds of assholes who did it. I'm not convinced that really counts.

    2. Michael Ejercito   1 year ago

Whether irradiated food is safe depends on the type of radiation used.

      1. MWAocdoc   1 year ago

No, it doesn’t. Irradiating food does nothing whatever to the food itself, while almost completely destroying bacteria, viruses, and spores that can cause infectious diseases in consumers. The irradiated food becomes much safer for consumption and in no way becomes even a little unsafe as a result of being exposed to radiation. But by all means feel free to cite a source for different "types" of radiation.

        1. Michael Ejercito   1 year ago

Depends on if the radiation results in nuclear transmutation.

Gamma rays powerful enough to spall protons or neutrons from the nucleus would be powerful enough to turn the food into plasma, so gamma radiation should be safe.

Alpha, beta, and cosmic radiation may induce nuclear transmutation into radioisotopes.

      2. Zeb   1 year ago

What kind of radiation do you think will make the food unsafe? Ionizing radiation will damage living cells, but doesn’t make anything radioactive that wasn’t beforehand unless it is cranked up to the extremely high levels that can alter atomic nuclei.

        1. Michael Ejercito   1 year ago

          Alpha, beta, and cosmic radiation.

Gamma radiation at typical levels are safe for this purpose.

          1. Zeb   1 year ago

OK, that is possible. But it's pretty easy to limit the energy of alpha or beta radiation so you don't have problems.
I suppose technically correct is the best kind of correct, but if done properly there is no danger to food irradiation.

        2. Medulla Oblongata   1 year ago

          FDA:

There are three sources of radiation approved for use on foods.

Gamma rays are emitted from radioactive forms of the element cobalt (Cobalt 60) or of the element cesium (Cesium 137). Gamma radiation is used routinely to sterilize medical, dental, and household products and is also used for the radiation treatment of cancer.

X-rays are produced by reflecting a high-energy stream of electrons off a target substance (usually one of the heavy metals) into food. X-rays are also widely used in medicine and industry to produce images of internal structures.

Electron beam (or e-beam) is similar to X-rays and is a stream of high-energy electrons propelled from an electron accelerator into food.

"“Inside the politics of raw milk, which is now trad- or conservative-coded.”"

  54. Roberta   1 year ago

    ...

Inside the politics of raw milk, which is now trad- or conservative-coded.

Good and apparently deep reporting. Health foods have been a left-right crossover issue in at least North America since the 1960s, but the particular hobby horses of the "left" and "right" within the health food movement have been nuanced and are increasingly showing evidence of opinion formation via deliberate polarization. So I'm interested.

Ultimately it's a matter of who consider themselves "outside", and how one perceives the shifting "inside" or "mainstream". Increasingly both the "left" and "right" consider themselves outsiders as to their own power, yet insiders as to the truth. They all feel oppressed, put upon, and vacillate between self-impressions of helplessness and power, or even try to hold those contradictions in their heads simultaneously.

I am in my late sixties and have to wonder about all these youngsters upset about inflation. I have seen inflation ebb and flow in my lifetime. While it can rise quickly it doesn't disappear as quickly. Right now inflation is stabilizing or decreasing and that is good. Also good is that the Fed's actions have seemed to slow it without creating a recession. Overall, I think people are coming out pretty well. Yes, prices are going up but for most things seems the way things go. Gas a $3.50/gal may seem high but when I got my drivers license it $0.35/gal. Candy bars were a nickel except an Almond Joy cost a dime in my youth. Inflation is important but should be viewed in perspective.

Central banks don't create inflation. Inflation is a natural process based on the basic economic principle of supply and demand. Banks can create buffers to dampen market swings and make them more tolerable. It easy to talk about letting the market go where it will but I really doubt that people want to take a ride on that roller coaster.

As if injecting money doesn’t make the ride wilder.

Inflation is always more money chasing fewer goods.. and it is enriching the folks who get the money first who benefit who can then invest in hard assets before producer and consumer prices rise. Inflation just doesn't occur due to "animal spirts" but due to increases in credit artificially. It isn't that hard. If the Fed stopped monetizing federal borrowing via the digital printing press and allowed the market to set interest rates prices would head down.

LOL, printing more money literally inflates the currency. Where the fuck do you think the "too much money" side of that equation comes from, you lying-ass dog?

At least when that roller coaster was going, inflation and deflation had dramatic swings, but the general price of goods and services remained relatively static over time. Something you bought for $10 in 1850 still probably cost about $10 in 1910. Save for the Depression and Great Recession, since the establishment of the Fed, $10 in 1913 is now $300.

"In what appears to be the first criminal case of its kind, two teenage boys were charged under a 2022 Florida law for allegedly creating AI-generated [nude] images depicting middle school classmates," reports Wired.
It is perfectly reasonable to presume that children are too immature to validly consent to the use of their likenesses to create realistic sexually explicit images.

Pretty sure they didn't get to say that one. Probably some form of Arabic for "Fuck!"

Maybe it was their last thought then. Of course, the last thing to go through their head was the aid package.
