A break from routine: Instead of the typical Roundup format, I wanted to break from tradition and give you all a bit of a year in review. Unfortunately, in 2023, statists had their way with us all, making many things a little less fun and free in the process.

Inflation was not OK: This was the year that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell just kept hiking those interest rates higher in hopes of taming inflation. This noticeably cooled the housing market. Other economic indicators—unemployment rate, consumer spending—remained OK. But for everyday Americans, basic essentials remained tougher to afford, even as inflation got a little less stubborn and began to show signs of slowing its upward trajectory.

At this point, it feels like inflated grocery bills are warranting fewer headlines, maybe because Americans have adjusted to this as a new, terrible normal. Much of this stemmed from pandemic-era spending, under both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, that free market economists warned would result in this dismal economic doom. Repeat after me: The bill always comes due.

Workers were not OK: In many ways, America became more like France this year (the worst possible fate). Between January 1 and November 30, an estimated 500,000 Americans went on strike. It wasn't just the May-to-September Hollywood writers strike; the actors followed suit, and then the autoworkers (for September and October), and the health care workers (just a few days in October). Hotel workers in Los Angeles, casino workers in Detroit, and food industry workers in Las Vegas all joined in the fun too. The autoworkers, The Wall Street Journal reports, "played by a new set of rules, bargaining with all companies at once, strategically targeting individual plants with no notice, and calling out the company for its greed."

In many cases, fears of technological disruption—AI taking over screenwriting, electric vehicles replacing combustible-engine cars—and demands that such change be thwarted were wrapped into union complaints.

Meanwhile, minimum wages crept higher and higher—$19.08 an hour in West Hollywood!—so look forward to that having an effect on the labor market (specifically: which jobs get automated away and at what rate) in the future.

The cities were not OK: My own city, New York, faced some high-profile vigilante justice in a subway killing of a mentally deranged homeless man that went viral. Washington, D.C.'s homicide rate is at its worst since 1997. A federal government memo sent in August told employees in San Francisco to work remotely due to increased crime concerns near the Department of Health and Human Services office there. "Population drain persists in big cities," reads an Axios headline that kind of says it all.

The presidential administration was not OK: Joe Biden blamed large corporations for inflation—continually peddling the myth that, well, actually, we're being charged higher prices because these CEOs suddenly discovered greed. He issued a mostly pointless executive order on AI. He tried to crack down on menthols. He forced "Buy American" provisions into useless infrastructure projects. He authorized a looooottttt more government spending. He tried to buy young voters by attempting mass student loan forgiveness. He turned 81.

The other guy was not OK either: Donald Trump, who remains the highest polling Republican presidential contender, is staring down 91 (!) felony counts over two federal districts and two state courts right now. He has his New York state fraud trial, his Manhattan defamation/sexual assault proceedings, another Manhattan case (this one for hush money payments), the Department of Justice's Mar-a-Lago documents case about HIS BOXES, and the Fulton County, Georgia, stolen-election racketeering case. Oh, and the Department of Justice's election-subversion case as well. He's bleeding lawyers. He's skipping debates. He's talking about deadly lemonade (OK, that one was fake, but seems plausible, and I kind of wish he'd gone there). He's really not OK. And he would bring all kinds of awful policies if elected for a second term. And will he end up serving as president from prison? It's not as far off of a possibility as I had hoped. Disturbing.

The election was not OK: The rest of the Republican field, which is all polling terribly, seems to broadly agree that we need to…wage war on Mexican cartels (?) and ban TikTok.

The kids were not OK: The terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and killed 1,200 civilians in the single bloodiest day in Israeli history. Children were burnt. Men were decapitated. Young women were attacked, in crop tops, at a music festival, by Hamas militants paragliding in from the sky.

American college students somehow thought now would be a great time to use the paragliders in poster art and re-up the decolonizer talk to advocate for Palestine to be freed, "from the river to the sea." (Many of them don't know which river or which sea is being discussed, mind you, which is yet another indication of the quality of education they're receiving.)

At the Sydney Opera House, young pro-Palestine protesters chanted "Gas the Jews." At least one young woman raised an image of a swastika in Times Square. Journalists got in on it too:

https://twitter.com/najmamsharif/status/1710689657757769783

As did university professors:

Including those in the upper echelons of academia—professors at Cornell said they were "exhilarated" upon hearing news of October 7, Harvard's student groups declared Israel entirely responsible for Hamas' terrorist attack, and the University of Pennsylvania came under fire for speech double standards on hosting a literary conference, extending invitations to speakers who had made antisemitic comments in the past.

The discourse was not OK:

once you see it it's literally everywhere https://t.co/UoZaAY3GyU pic.twitter.com/DmRkfnQBhs

— ???????? (@krrishd) December 21, 2023

Our slow descent into collective madness continues. But, despite all this, many cool things happened outside the realm of politics.

Intelligence, all around: OpenAI launched ChatGPT-4 and became, truly, a household name. Meta's Llama launched (February) to compete with it, as did Google's Bard (March), as did Elon Musk's Grok (November), as did Anthropic's Claude 2.1 (November), as did Google's Gemini (earlier this month). May the best LLM win.

But it wasn't just the large language models that advanced and competed with each other; AI applications had a massive year, more broadly. Whether used for fraud prevention or lung cancer detection or drug discovery, artificial intelligence is just beginning to transform how all kinds of industries function.

In 2023, the multiplanetary future got a little closer. NASA continued to recede in prominence as private space companies made massive strides. "The last decade has exceeded my expectations largely because of SpaceX," former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver told Ars Technica last year. And the Federal Aviation Administration continued to do a nice job getting out of private space firms' way.

Here on Earth, some cities (Austin) and states (California, possibly Hawaii) finally started listening to YIMBYs ("yes in my backyard") a bit and began to…actually build more and loosen up zoning.

And those college-kid dunces I just mentioned? Well, donors started to pull a ton of funding for these elite universities and a bunch of college presidents got lambasted in a congressional hearing. The wokeness fever looks like it's breaking.

And tougher economic times in some industries—tech world layoffs, for example—also meant the shuttering of DEI and ESG initiatives. In a lot of realms, people are getting back to business at long last.

THAT INCLUDES ME. I came back from maternity leave in January and wrote a piece on how having my son has changed me and why more women ought to get pregnant young (stereotypical girl move, I know). I launched a show called Just Asking Questions with Zach Weissmueller (PLEASE watch us and suggest any guests you'd like to see come on). I made a video essay for Reason that tore RFK Jr. apart—and got a lot of hate—then went on comedian Dave Smith's show to discuss it…which promptly got taken down by the fine censors at YouTube (rude of them). I escaped Brooklyn and moved to Queens. And I inherited this newsletter, with this community of wonderful readers.

If you've waded through all the dismal news up until this point, I hereby commend you. Thank you for reading Reason Roundup, from the bottom of my heart. Statists may continue to try to screw things up for us all, but I have hope for 2024 and all the wonderful things happening far outside central planners' grasps.

Why, are you outing yourself as a sock, twerp? You do realize that people can copy and paste, eh?

        It's a retard, presumably.

        1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

I don't think there's an "presumably" about this one. Lardo Blardo is a retard.

Stinks a lot like turd, trying to be clever. And failing.

It just seems odd that there's more than one retard out there who not only thinks that's the most clever insult ever conceived of, but that it gets even better if you repeat it about 100,000 times. It seems more likely that Tulpa lost track of his socks, and then tried to cover for it by posting the same thing under two more socks.

Looks like we can add Nazi-Chipping Warlock to the list of Tulpa socks. No big surprise there. They all sound exactly alike, and we all know that Tulpa loves to have conversations with himself.

Let's see who else adds to the pile-on. This will be fun 🙂

      1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

So, Blardo Retardo, whose sock are you?

We ALL just LOVE Tulpa, dearly!!!

Dear Abby? Hello, Dear Shabby-Flabby-Abby?!?!? Am I in the right place?!?!?

        Hi Tulpa!

“Dear Abby” is a personal friend of mine. She gets some VERY strange letters! For my amusement, she forwards some of them to me from time to time. Here is a relevant one:

        Dear Abby, Dear Abby,
        My life is a mess,
Even Bill Clinton won’t stain my dress,
I whinny seductively for the horses,
They tell me my picnic is short a few courses,
My real name is Mary Stack,
NO ONE wants my hairy crack!
On disability, I live all alone,
Spend desperate nights by the phone,
I found a man named Richard (Dick) Decker,
But he won’t give me his hairy pecker!
Dick Decker’s pecker is reserved for farm beasts,
I am beastly, yes! But my crack’s full of yeasts!

So Dear Abby, that’s just a poetic summary… You can read about the Love of my Life, Richard Decker, here:
        https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/10/11/farmers-kept-refusing-let-him-have-sex-with-their-animals-so-he-sought-revenge-authorities-say/ and https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/sex-animals-bestiality-farm-cows-horses-richard-decker-new-jersey-a9152136.html

Farmers kept refusing to let him have sex with their animals. So he sought revenge, authorities say.
Decker the hairy pecker told me a summary of his story as below:
Decker: “Can I have sex with your horse?”
Farmer: “Lemme go ask the horse.”
        Pause…
        Farmer: “My horse says ‘neigh’!”
And THAT was straight from the horse’s mouth! I’m not horsin’ around, here, no mare!

So Richard Decker the hairy pecker told me that, apparently never even realizing just HOW DEEPLY it hurt me, that he was all interested in farm beasts, while totally ignoring MEEE!!

So I thought maybe I could at least liven up my lonely-heart social life, by refining my common interests that I share with Richard Decker… I, too, like to have sex with horses!

But Dear Abby, the horses ALL keep on saying “neigh” to my whinnying sexual advances!
Some tell me that my whinnying is too whiny… Abby, I don’t know how to fix it!

Dear Abby, please don’t tell me “get therapy”… I can’t afford it on my disability check!

Now, along with my crack full of yeasts… I am developing anorexia! Some are calling me a “quarter pounder with cheese”, but they are NOT interested at ALL, in eating me!!! They will NOT snack on my crack!

What will I DO, Dear Abby?!?!?

-Desperately Seeking Horses, Men, or ANYTHING, in Fort Worth,
        Yours Truly,
        R Mac / Mary Stack / Tulpa / Mary’s Period / “.” / Satan

Anyone ever tell you to keep you to stay in the mental hospital..er..keep your day job?

          1. SQRLSY One   1 year ago

All of those who disagree with MEEEE are… Mentally ILL!!! YES, this! Good authoritarians KNOW this already!

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_abuse_of_psychiatry_in_the_Soviet_Union

All of the GOOD totalitarians KNOW that those who oppose totalitarianism are mentally ill, for sure!!!

"Are these your socks too, Tulpa?
      Mother’s Lament:"

Every time you whine about Sevo's copypasta, Pluggo, I post it myself, and will continue to do so more frequently in the future. So fuck you.

      1. blardo   1 year ago

I'm not your friend Pluggo, and it makes me laugh to know that I just motivated you to waste a little more of your life 🙂

    5. Minadin   1 year ago

Those 3 aren't even from remotely the same part of the continent, let alone the same person.

Trust me, lots of very different people agree that SPB2 is a disingenuous, lying leftist, who got banned for posting kiddie porn.

      1. blardo   1 year ago

You really have no way of knowing if they're from different parts of the continent though, do you? They might drop some comment about being from Canada, or San Francisco, or wherever every now and then, but it really wouldn't take much effort to impersonate any of them. It would just take time, and we know that Tulpa has plenty of that.

If Buttplug posted kiddie porn, he should absolutely be banned; I wasn't disputing that. But Tulpa should also be banned for creating literally hundreds of socks, trolling, and generally shitting up the commentariat for years on end, and those 3 (assuming they're actually different people) don't seem to have any problem with him.

    2. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

For one thing, she's not taking off until after the first of the year. That is very good considering all the other professional jerks who do that.

Happy New Year, Liz! Keep the great Reason Roundups coming!

      1. Fist of Etiquette   1 year ago

        NO SUCKING UP

        1. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

I evidently spoke too soon, Liz hasn't posted a Roundup in two days.

Oh well, unlike the professional jerks, she needs her beauty rest and rest of her mind for future Roundups. Here's hoping she comes back swinging at the shitshow that is sure to come in 2024!

  3. Fist of Etiquette   1 year ago

At this point, it feels like inflated grocery bills are warranting fewer headlines, maybe because Americans have adjusted to this as a new, terrible normal.

      Other headlines:

"Biden rips media for economy coverage: ‘Start reporting it the right way’

"Biden confuses debt with deficit, blames press for grim economic news and claims a budget ‘surplus’ in White House rant

"Fact check: Biden makes false and misleading claims in economic speech

That last one is a CNN headline...

      1. MWAocdoc   1 year ago

To be fair, the Democrats are conflicted about their standard bearer, too. The "Dump Biden" movement has to be subtle to avoid harming their own campaign, but they secretly wish that they had someone - ANYONE! - to replace him. Unfortunately for them they have scraped the bottom of the barrel with Joe and have nowhere else to turn.

      🙂
      😉
Seriously, my Francophone customers at the store from Haiti, the Carribean, and former French colonies are some of the damn stupidest, most arrogant people.

They'll pile differing raw meats on top of each other, always purchase the leakiest, bloodiest cuts, put heavy items on top of bread and eggs, scatter individual produce items all over the conveyor belt instead of grouping them by type of fruit or vegetable. Then when you finish ringing up their order, they'll have several cards (always including EBT) and cash as means of payment and they always need help figuring out how to enter them on the pen-pad.

They'll also pull single sodas or beers or wet-wipes from a multi-pack and expect to be able to buy them separately! And they think it strange that they need ID to buy alcohol!

The greatest argument against Colonialism is what I encounter every day! The French evidently rubbed off on their former colonized peoples and now the former colonized are as bad as the French! George Orwell's Farmer Jones, call your office!

Oh, they expected all right. They just played 'possum as Morranos and posed as Christians as a survival tactic.

            As Thomas Jefferson observed:

Is uniformity of opinion desirable? No more than face or stature ... Is uniformity attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advance one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.

            [Query XVII, “Religion”]

            1. Truthfulness   1 year ago

Thomas Jefferson left out that billions were blessed with the rise of universities, hospitals, inventions, literature, etc. thanks to that same religion.

Reconquista in 1492 was a massive turning point for Spain and the whole world, and arguably for the better.

              1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Oh and much of the rest of Christiandom banned the Inquisition (it wasn't just a Spanish thing, but gained the most power in Spain).

              2. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

The world hadn't yet reached one billion people at Jefferson's time, so any plural billions of Christians were long since dead from the violence, disease, poverty, and all the other shit that killed people in antiquity.

And universities, hospitals, inventions, literature, etc. existed before and independently of Christianity...and will exist after Christianity as well.

And you mean throwing out the slightly less Anti-Jewish Theocratic Muslims and replacing them with more Anti-Jewish Theocratic Christians and throwing the Jews out out as well or forcing them to convert to Christianity was somehow a good thing?

                1. Nelson   1 year ago

Every century in human history has been dominated by religiously-based (and justified) murder and destruction.

In the 20th century, specifically, the Catholic Church dominated in the area of pedophilia, despite strong competition from other denominations and the Boy Scouts.

God may exist. I don't think it's possible to honestly claim that there's no possibility of a greater force in the universe, conscious or otherwise.

But the one thing that seems clear is that no religion created so far has gotten it completely right. So killing In the name of religion is just murder, like every other unjustified killing. Religious beliefs don't justify any violence at all.

                  1. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

I fully concede that there are many forces greater and more powerful than mortal humans, but they all exiet within the realm of the Natural Universe and can (at least eventually) be understood (and possibly even controlled or harnessed) by the exercise of the human faculty of Reason.

That point addressed, the nub of your jist and the cut of your jib about religion are absolutely correct. Religion and Morality and Ethics are all separate things.

What a fucking moron. The Reformation has long been associated with the enlightenment. Luther and other reformers taught that religion was a personal matter and endeavor, not a centralized matter, dictated by an hierarchy (the church) that required an intermediary (clergy) but was instead the right of every person to practice religion without the need for a clergy and hierarchal church system. Read Luther's 95 thesis and then tell me the Reformation had no direct influence on the enlightenment. Or the Small and Large Chatacism

What a fucking moron. The Reformation has long been associated with the enlightenment.

                1. mtrueman   1 year ago

Diderot was pretty open about his anticlerical views. Scots like Hume and Smith went to great troubles to hide their skepticism. It was only a couple of years ago that Scotland repealed her blasphemy laws.

The whole Enlightenment project can be characterized as up with science and reason, down with religion, faith and superstition.

                  1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Considering the church at the time was the biggest patron of the sciences, rejecting religion would be rejecting science. Further, anti-clerical doesn't mean anti-religion. Fuck, you're a moron.

                    1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Considering the church at the time was the biggest patron of the sciences, rejecting religion would be rejecting science."

That's why Smith and Hume kept their skepticism secret. Smith also had other reasons to be careful about religion. He read widely of Muslim scholars and incorporated Ibn Khaldun's ideas in his work. Division of labor and other issues.

The Enlightenment was about reason and how knowledge should be based on reason. It's antithetical to religion based on faith and received wisdom.

Diderot was from France, a much more liberal society than France but his most notorious work, the novel La Religieuse was only only published after his death.

Spinoza, coming from even more liberal Holland, also had his most skeptical work published after his death. Authorities had his publisher executed.

                    2. Nelson   1 year ago

"Considering the church at the time was the biggest patron of the sciences"

The church was the biggest patron of approved science. The Enlightenment ideals that moved the world away from religion and towards reason and evidence-based belief were definitely not approved.

The church actively tried to suppress and destroy ideas that argued that believing things based on faith and tradition was flawed and irrational.

The Enlightenment was the single most potent blow struck against religion, superstition, and tradition. Thinking that religion was a cause and an ardent supporter of the Enlightenment and its reason- and knowledge-based beliefs takes and almost inconceivable level of mental gymnastics.

I will always remember the eloquent and moving post you made about Lutheranism. I swear I could feel the love you have for your faith through your words, which is really hard to do. But in this, your bias is clearly showing.

        3. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Just like how I don't reject Henry, or Jefferson or Madison or Franklin because they owned slaves, I don't reject the Reformation because Luther was in his latter years an outspoken anti-semite (in a region and time when Anti-semitism was widely accepted).

          1. Mother's Lament   1 year ago

Luther's "antisemitism" was strictly religious and had no racial character. His truck was with post-Second Temple Rabbinic Judaism.

In this aspect he was no different than Encog who also rails against the Jewish religion.

            1. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

As if Luther's Antisemitism was somehow better than the Nazis' Antisemitism, especially when the Nazis favorably cited Luther?

And, unlike Luther, I don't call anyone "filthy" and "maggotty" and call for them to be forced to work for Gentiles and have their property seized and for them to be burned to death in their houses of worship. Big difference between that and calling out nonsense.

              1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Antisemitism is wrong, but condemning someone because the Nazis used some of his thoughts for their own twisted evil is just fucking grade school level stupidity. The Nazis also twisted the teachings of a lot of well respected Enlightenment and Humanists philosophers, are they also guilty for what the Nazis did?

                1. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

Luther and the Nazis were equally evil and the Nazis cited Luther straight with no twist. Dummy!

            1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Luther had his good points and his bad, like all human beings. Focusing only on the bad is the same thing woke idiots do when they condemn Jefferson et al. But you know that, but can't admit you're a hypocrite yourself, with a huge dose of bash religion no matter what.

            2. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Luther taught that religion was a personal thing, divorced from the need for an hierarchal church and taught a personal relationship with God, not dictated by an authoritarian clergy. The Reformation was instrumental in developing the modern world, no longer dictated by a tyrannical church. Yes, his Anti-semitism was unforgivable, but so was owning slaves. So was killing Indians to take their land. So was serfdom. Etc. You talk just like a woke idiot. Condemning someone for the worst faults while ignoring any good aspects of their life. Luther put his life on the line, not even being hyperbolic, he was actually condemned to death, for his rejection of the worst excesses of the Catholic Church, selling of indulgences, prayer intercession. And his worst Anti-semitism occurred in the last years of his life, during the height of his protests against the Pope, he actually spoke positively of the Jews, and condemned the persecution of them. He was also suffering from severe renal disease at the time, was in constant pain, had spent decades having to live in exile as a result of his beliefs etc. And was completely at the mercy of his benefactors to protect him from the emperor and the Pope. Which doesn't excuse his statements but I've dealt with many people with terminal illness and constant pain, and trust me, judging them solely based on what they say while enduring that rather than the entirety of their life is the purview of the simpleminded. People who see only black and white. Just like you, who judges all religions on the acts of a few bad examples. Because you're a fucking simpleminded idiot, incapable of understanding your own inadequacies, instead you project you're insecurities on to others to make yourself feel special. Just like the woke idiots. You even use the same verbage, Mr I am Pan (because being Bi is to mundane for you, you have to be special, edgy, cool). Fucking grow up. Someone who spends as much time as you do, proselytizing their atheism, is generally not doing it because they truly have rejected God, but because they want to be seen as special. Look at me, I am special. The only thing special about you, is the classes you took in school.

Moses and Jesus didn't hate Jews in those instances, they hated the acts of a few of their fellow Jews. Once again, you show your complete ignorance on Biblical matters, while trying to assure us your edgy anti-theism is the informed opinion. Stop pointing on shit (Christianity and Judaism) that you obviously have no familiarity with, so you recycle trope from revisionist historians who also tend not to understand religion. As for humor, the funniest thing is that you actually consider yourself more informed than me, now that's funny.

          2. Truthfulness   1 year ago

What exactly did he get wrong? Moses, Jesus and Muhammad all condemned a certain portion of Jews and did not let them go unpunished for their actions.

It's like you have zero clue what antisemitism is, and actually harbor such feelings yourself, considering your contempt for Jewish beliefs. Knock it off.

            1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

They didn't condemn the people, they condemned their acts, which is was my point he is saying I was wrong about. Jesus condemned their actions, but also offered them a path to forgiveness. Moses condemned the worshipping of Idols. What most edgy atheists don't understand about the Judeo-Christian tradition, is that it condemns acts (sin), rather than people, (God is the judge, not man) but that repentance (especially Christians) offers salvation for your bad acts. If you read Leviticus, yes there are some really harsh penalties, but also offers ways to avoid those penalties through offerings, prayer etc (which are acts of repentance). Christ condemned the actions of many, but also offered them a path to correct their actions. Christ forgave Peter after Peter asked for forgiveness for renouncing Christ. Recog's understanding of religion is limited to what he reads on bumper stickers.

Especially the money and effort spent trying to REASON with the UNREASONABLE damikesc!!!!

Hey Damiksec, damiskec, and damikesc, and ALL of your other socks…
How is your totalitarian scheme to FORCE people to buy Reason magazines coming along?

Free speech (freedom from “Cancel Culture”) comes from Facebook, Twitter, Tik-Tok, and Google, right? THAT is why we need to pass laws to severely constrict these DANGEROUS companies (which, ugh!, the BASTARDS, put profits above people!)!!! We must pass new laws to retract “Section 230” and FORCE the evil corporations to provide us all (EXCEPT for my political enemies, of course!) with a “UBIFS”, a Universal Basic Income of Free Speech!

So leftist “false flag” commenters will inundate Reason-dot-com with shitloads of PROTECTED racist comments, and then pissed-off readers and advertisers and buyers (of Reason magazine) will all BOYCOTT Reason! And right-wing idiots like Damikesc will then FORCE people to support Reason, so as to nullify the attempts at boycotts! THAT is your ultimate authoritarian “fix” here!!!

“Now, to “protect” Reason from this meddling here, are we going to REQUIRE readers and advertisers to support Reason, to protect Reason from boycotts?”
Yup. Basically. Sounds rough. (Quote damikesc)

        (Etc.)

        See https://reason.com/2020/06/24/the-new-censors/

(And Asshole Extraordinaire will NEVER take back its' totalitarian bullshit!!!! 'Cause Asshole Extraordinaire is already PERFECT in every way!!!)

This (above damikesc quote) is a gem of the damnedest dumbness of damikesc! Like MANY “perfect in their own minds” asshole authoritarians around here, he will NEVER take back ANY of the stupidest and most evil things that he has written! I have more of those on file… I deploy them to warn other readers to NOT bother to try and reason with the most utterly unreasonable of the nit-wit twits here!

I wonder if this dumbass realizes that under Sha’ria law that “The People of The Book” (i.e. Jews, Christians, and sometimes Zoroastrians) aren’t allowed to have houses of worship bigger than a mosque, cannot build new houses of worship, and cannot rebuild or restore old houses of worship?

I wonder if this dumbass realizes that “The People of The Book” under Sha’ria law cannot be on the sidewalk as equals with Muslims, they have to wear special badges or clothing distinguishing them as “The People of The Book”–(Where else have we heard of this?)–and that “The People of The Book” cannot have administrative positions of authority over Muslims?

I wonder if he realizes that the “usury” he opposes is how banks and financial institutions in a Free Marketplace provide capital for production and innovation of new products and services?

And does he realize that “usury” encourages people to make wiser uses of the resources they already have, both for consumption and production?

(Small damn wonder that the majority of people Muslim-dominated societies unconnected to petroleum are so piss-poor compared against people in the comparatively freer Secular West.)

I wonder if he realizes that, although the Jizya tax for “The People of The Book” is only 2.8 percent, the penalty for non-payment of this tax–paid for the indignity of second-class citizenship–is exile or death? It’s called a “Head Tax” for a reason.

I wonder if he realizes that under Sha’ria law “The People of The Book” are not allowed to ride horses or to keep and bear arms for self-defense?

And I wonder if he realizes that under differing schools of Sha’ria law, Zoroastrians, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Confucians, Pagans, Animists, and Non-Theists are not even considered “The People of The Book” and under the laws of Jihad are subject to instant extermination?

And I wonder if he realizes that part of the “Progressive” craziness he claims to oppose wants to allow Muslims to bring their separatist enclaves operating under Sha’ria law into the midst of freer Western societies?

Nope, I guess not. And this Dhimmi Dummy–if he ever gets his wish–deserves all he gets!

He can have it. As for me and any other freedom-loving individuals, I say: Lan Astaslem! (which is Arabic for “I Will Not Submit!”)

Read an article this weekend on RealClearHistory that the author claimed that we should label the Spaniards who overthrew the Muslim Caliphates in Spain as conquerors rather than liberators. I wanted to ask the author if he thought the Caliphates where the original inhabitants or if the Northern Spanish Kingdoms were what little of the pre-existing Kingdoms of Visigothic post Roman Spain that survived the Muslims invasion of Spain in the 8th century? Hey, I love America, but if the Apache and Lakota somehow drove out Americans of European decent, I wouldn't label them conquerors. I'd rightly acknowledge that we conquered them, and they were reclaiming what we first conquered (but also admit that they also conquered that land from others). If Wales suddenly grew rebellious and successfully drove all descendants of the Anglo-Saxons, Normans and other of Scandinavian decent from England, I wouldn't label them as conquerors, but that they reclaimed land they had lost. It is no wonder these idiots think Israelis are colonists. They don't seem to grasp the historical fact that for most of it's history, Muslim world (especially the Turks and Arabs) have been the conqueror, the true colonists. Maybe they think Istanbul was the original name of the city. I don't know, but it's pretty sad how many claim to be educated and still spout this ahistorical nonsense.

And the border is not OK either. These are apparently distributed by NGOs to migrants. I sincerely doubt these migrants are heading north of their own volition. They seem to have been promised something that's not materializing for them (as noted by some who actually decided to go back home) by someone.

    https://www.muckraker.com/articles/illegal-alien-invasion-maps-exposed/

Muckraker has obtained multiple maps, handed out by non-government organizations across South and Central America, that detail the routes to take to the U.S. and where to cross the U.S. border.

These maps are hardly reported on by the mainstream media since illegal aliens usually lose the maps along their way.

We were able to obtain these blueprints by directly visiting numerous NGOs along the mass migration route through South and Central America.

The collapse of the U.S. southern border is the result of a carefully planned and deliberately executed industrial mass migration program.

The maps on the site are quite interesting.

    Attacking political opponents.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/bidens-weaponized-govt-attacks-against-elon-musk-tyranny

On a recent episode of the All-In Podcast, hosts David Sacks, Jason Calacanis, Chamath Palihapitiya, and David Friedberg discussed the weaponization of federal agencies by the Biden administration against Elon Musk.

"They've now weaponized multiple federal agencies to go after Elon on these cases that seem transparently trumped up," Sacks said.

Musk, an outspoken critic of President Biden, has seen an increasing number of banana republic-style weaponization tactics by the administration against his companies, from Tesla to SpaceX, this year.

Sacks listed several cases, including when the Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission went after Musk in August for allegedly using Tesla funds to construct a 'glass house.' The DoJ also went after Tesla for not hiring enough refugees, and, more recently, the Federal Communications Commission rejected SpaceX's Starlink from receiving a $855 million rural internet subsidy.

Granted, I'm not in favor of subsidies for anyone, but this administration is picking favorites.

Palihapitiya asked: "Do you think this is politically motivated harassment of Elon by the Biden administration?"

    Calacanis chimed in: "100%".

Calacanis added that Tesla was not invited to the EV summit at the White House earlier this month. He noted, "You just take Biden at his actions - if you don't invite Elon to the EV summit - it's obvious he [the president] has got it in for this guy [Musk]."

"And now it's obvious he [Biden] has told people to investigate him [Musk] and harass him - it's obvious."

Palihapitiya asked, "Why doesn't Biden like him [Musk]"?

Calacanis pointed out the obvious answer: "Because he [Musk] is non-union - and sure, the freedom of speech things and Twitter doesn't help - but this [Musk's dislike of unions] predates Twitter."

"Biden is a union guy. He will not support non-union people. He is bought and sold by the unions."

It should become increasingly clear that progressive radicals in the White House are weaponizing every agency possible to attack political opponents. These are all signs of a tyrannical, out-of-control federal government.

AMerica was energy independent before Trump took office. The tax cuts only served to increase the national debt and increase the wealth of richest. Obama left Trump with a good economy that he ran into the ground. Middle Peace by excluding the Palestinians, we see how that worked now. Little in actual deregulation more in talk, than in real. Bowed to authoritarians.

Biden blows authoritarians left and right (Iran has few more craven friends than Biden and God knows Ukraine owns him lock, stock, and barrel). And a lot of Bezos high net worth in 2021 came from...governments, predominately progressive ones, shutting down commerce for all but large retailers and Amazon for most of 2020.

So, keeping on kid gloves does not work?

                    Got it.

Time for the US to demand the UN terminate UNRWA or simply leave the body. Time to let Israel do whatever is needed to deal with Hamas. Time to label all of Gaza and WB as terrorist organizations and sanction any aid sent to them.

"So, keeping on kid gloves does not work?"

Neither does genocide. The Nazis learned this long ago. What's your excuse.

"and sanction any aid sent to them."

Why not? it's prevented the Russians from attacking Ukraine, the Taliban from taking Kabul, and the North Koreans from developing nuclear weapons and ICBMs. Once upon a time Libertarians sang the praises of free trade. Today it's sanctions.

Reread my comments. If you still have questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

"Since Israel isn’t conducting Genocide "

I take your point. Only the Khmer Rouge, Nazis and Bolsheviks have committed Genocide. Israelis only commit genocide (with a small g) something America's establishment is comfortable with and can enthusiastically support.

Israel is not conducting any type of genocide. Period. Only antisemite like you label a government that allows Muslims and Arabs to hold office, vote, have full citizenship, freedom of religion, and which has offered multiple times Palestine their own country, and which the Palestinian population is growing, only idiots call that genocide. You are using the word genocide, blaming a government and country clearly not conducting anything close to genocide, to cover for your bigotry. You gaslighting to cover for your hatred.

"Israel is not conducting any type of genocide. "

Have you checked a dictionary? Wonderful things they are. Not only do they tell you how to spell words like genocide, which by the way you seem to have mastered, but they also tell you what words mean, and here you seem confused.

Please do inform us then? How is Israel conducting a genocide? Are they trying to wipe out all Palestinians? Oh no they are not. Are they trying to destroy their (Arab) culture? No they are not. Are they forcing them to convert? Nope. Have they allowed them their own government? Why yes they have. So, nope not a genocide. Fucking moron. You may want you money back on your fucking dictionary moron.

Also does anyone find it ironic, how the same idiots calling for Israel to negotiate a cease fire with an organization that vows to exterminate Israel and Jews worldwide, also will call you a Putin puppet, for observing that Ukraine can't continue to resist and should negotiate with Russia, a Russia, under Putin, which has never called for the extermination of Ukraine or the Ukrainian people world wide. Don't negotiate when you're losing a border dispute but do negotiate with people seeking the genocide of your people. Gee, wonder what the difference between Israel and Ukraine is? Putin isn't even proposing taking over all of Ukraine, while Hamas, Hezbollah and even the PA, blatantly advocate for the complete destruction of Israel to be replaced with a Arab dominated Palestine (and based on how many Jews are still living in other Arab majority countries, the complete replacement of all Jews in Israel with Arabs).

Hamas doesn't want freedom, dickhead. Also, how many Japanese or Germans are trying to avenge 1945? Functionally zero dickhead. You know what does create new enemies, ignoring provocation of old enemies. Ask Chamberlain how well negotiating with evil works. Historically speaking, war actually has a better track record at ending evil acts than appeasement.

                1. mtrueman   1 year ago

                  "Hamas doesn’t want freedom, dickhead."

Hamas's foulmouthed spokesman finally chimes in.

"Also, how many Japanese or Germans are trying to avenge 1945? "

They were both defeated, signed surrender conditions, the whole bit. The Palestinians fight on. They've never surrendered. Much like the Afghans, where the Taliban once again rule the roost despite over 20 years of American occupation. All this nostalgia for Chamberlain and WWII isn't helping you cope with this conflict.

                  1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

I don't have to be the spokesman, I have read their fucking charter, moron. Also, I've seen their fucking actions towards their fellow Palestinians when they disagree with Hamas. Yeah, nothing says wanting freedom more than throwing gays off of tall building, torturing and beating to death anyone who dare speaks against you.

As to the Afghanistan, it proves my point far more than yours. We didn't really put all our effort into destroying the Taliban. We deployed more troops to take down Iraq then we did at any point in Afghanistan. We focused on winning hearts and minds instead of seeking out and destroying the enemy. Talk to Afghanistan veterans and they will tell you the frustrations they felt knowing where the enemy was, and not being able to go and destroy them. Afghanistan suffered from the Vietnam syndrome. Limited war, low intensity focused on ambiguous, ever shifting goals, restrictive ROE, that changed every other day, a failure to close with and destroy the enemy a focus on humanitarian goals and nation building which are not what the military is designed for, etc. We have not closed with and tried to destroy an enemy completely since September, 1945. Even though MacArthur came really fucking close to destroying North Korea, his mission was not to destroy them, but to contain them. Even though we claimed to be seeking to destroy the Taliban, we never put the types of resources, or utilized those resources fully, necessary to destroy them, instead we fought it piecemeal, and quickly shifted to nation building before we closed with and completely destroyed our adversaries. Why it worked in Germany and Japan is because we didn't do anything until we had closed with and completely destroyed our enemies ability to resist. Read Pershing, he stated the failure to close with and destroy Germany in 1918 was going to lead to another war in a generation. Read Grant and Sherman, they understood that victory was only achievable by completely destroying the South's ability to resist.

"I have read their fucking charter, moron"

So has Netanyahu, I'm sure. So how do you explain his routinely sending suitcases of millions of dollars to Hamas in an effort to strengthen them? What does he know that you don't?

"We deployed more troops to take down Iraq then we did at any point in Afghanistan."

Than is the word you're looking for. Not then. Crumbling empire, crumbling literacy. They go hand in hand, as any ancient Roman will tell you.

                    2. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Actually both apply, because the statement can also be temporal. When you have to correct grammar, it's largely because because you lack a cognitive argument. Not a sign of someone else's illiteracy, oh know you didn't edit, you're illiterate. It's silly gotcha. A weak, puerile style of argument that is associated with a lack of a counterpoint. It's a way to imply you're smarter than the other poster, therefore they must be wrong. It's sophomoric and really only impresses fellow (often uninformed) co-partisans. It is like labeling anything Israel has done as genocide. It shows a complete inability to think deeply on a subject or any semblance of original thought or self reflection.

                    3. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

I hate to burst your bubble, but you're not very intelligent, special, unique, original, or educated. You just parrot lines given to you by your fellow cultists. Without being able to defend them. You're not a sophisticated thinker, and are incapable of doing anything but repeating the words of others without any understanding of your own.

                    4. mtrueman   1 year ago

" When you have to correct grammar,"

I'm pretty tolerant with grammar. I'm a stickler for spelling, though, as you know. You might even call me a spelling Nazi, or spelling antisemite if you want to echo the parlance of the times. Anyway, you should be more careful if you wish to avoid further humiliating take downs.

"A weak, puerile style of argument that is associated with a lack of a counterpoint. "

I've made my point, your whining apologetic for a failed bid to conquer Afghanistan is neither here nor there.

                    5. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

What fucking embarrassing takedown? Oh no, I messed up and typed then rather than than. If you consider that a takedown, you're dumber than I thought you were, and that takes a lot. Fucking moron.

                    6. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

You didn't make any fucking point. You said look at Afghanistan. And I countered and you then corrected my grammar. And then said I was whining about us not conquering a country we never fucking tried to conquer. The entire mission was to allow them to govern themselves free of the Taliban. It wasn't even close to the definition of conquest. You need a new fucking dictionary because you don't understand half the words you throw out in your faux-intellectual double speak. You use the latest buzzwords with no understanding of what they actually fucking mean. You still haven't said under what definition Israel is conducting genocide. What actions of theirs can be construed as trying to eliminate a people or their culture? Allowing Palestinians self rule, freedom of religion, etc is the exact opposite of fucking genocide. But instead, you use the hackneyed phrase look it up in the dictionary. Which is basically admitting you don't fucking have a clue what you're talking about and when confronted with actual counterarguments to your preferred ignorant talking points you try to place the burden of proof on the other person rather than offering a cognitive answer. Because, you know you can't defend that statement, so like most faux-intellectuals you try to imply you have more knowledge but refuse to share it. It is a sure sign of a weak fucking argument. It's perfectly clear you can't defend calling it a genocide or that you're argument on Afghanistan is fucking weak, but you won't admit it so you lamely resort to sophistry and rather amateurish sophistry at that.

                    7. mtrueman   1 year ago

"What actions of theirs can be construed as trying to eliminate a people or their culture? "

I quoted the dictionary definition of genocide elsewhere on this page. You can probably find it if you search, though it's no different from what you'll find in a typical dictionary.

"What actions of theirs can be construed as trying to eliminate a people or their culture? "

Killing tens of thousands of civilians already confined to an open air prison, half of whom are children. Killing doctors, nurses, orderlies, ambulance drivers, teachers, academics, athletes, journalists, clerics - the leaders, future leaders and defenders of the culture in other words. Destroying housing, hospitals, markets, churches, mosques, and other infrastructure. Denying a confined population water, food, fuel, communications and creating an environment that disease and hunger will kill those who've managed to escape the bombardment. None of this is secret but you'll have to go further afield than Reason and American media to understand the scope of horror you support. If you really need me to outline the situation in Gaza, you should take it upon yourself to learn more. I feel you are inclined to dismiss anything I write out of hand.

"It’s perfectly clear you can’t defend calling it a genocide or that you’re argument on Afghanistan is fucking weak"

I've already defended calling it a genocide. It's you who haven't defended your denial and apologetic for this atrocity. As for Afghanistan, my argument remains strong and persuasive. You see winning a war is the easy part. The US chased the Taliban out of Kabul and replaced it with a puppet regime in a matter of weeks, if not days. Occupation is the hard part. Twenty years of occupation and the Taliban march into Kabul in daylight as the last US planes leave. This should be a reminder for all those here who are crowing about how Israel has won every war they've fought. It's not the war, but the occupation that is the stumbling block, and Israel's occupation of Palestine goes back some 70 years. Resistance only gets stronger and stronger.

During the American Revolution (which was a civil war) only about a 1/3 of the country supported revolution, a third opposed and a third just wanted to stay out of the way. Similar numbers for the the French Revolution. As for the American Revolution, even many of the leading Confederate officers were ambivalent towards secession at first. The Paris Commune, the Russian Revolution etc etc. Say only 5% decide to revolt. That's 16+ million, making it the largest Army on the world, eight times larger to be exact. 2.5%, still larger, 1%, still larger than the largest standing Army.

        1. Roberta   1 year ago

We don't really know those numbers for the American revolution, people just keep repeating them from a guess Jefferson took afterward in a letter to his wife.

          1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

We can draw some conclusions on the fact similar colonists served the Crown as in the Continental Army. Some inference can also be made from the popular press at the time, support for Independence etc. Which is kind of beside the point, which is generally rebellions/civil wars start without needing a majority of the country supporting said actions. A small, committed segment of the population, if properly motivated can cause a whole lot of fucking damage, and even achieve victory.

            1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

To take it even further, at the end of the second world war, only 10% of the adult population had served in the Military. During Vietnam it was about a quarter of that percentage, and for twenty plus years of the GWOT, less than 1% of us served in the military. After 20+ years of war, less than 1% can claim to be veterans of the GWOT, that's counting those who served in country and those who stayed stateside. A war that was overlapped three generations (mostly fought by Gen X during the first part, mostly in the second half, with some early Gen Z serving at the very end) and less than 1 % are veterans of it. Which shows that it only takes a small minority of the adult population to fight a war.

              1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Actually four generations, because at the start, there were a few boomers still serving. I served with a guy who had a combat patch from Vietnam during my deployment.

    Delegitimizing the Supreme Court.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/behind-democrats-efforts-regulate-supreme-court

Democrats and their left-wing activist allies have been incensed over the past two years as the court sent abortion matters back to the states, axed affirmative action in college admissions, bolstered gun rights and public prayer, backed a website designer’s right not to promote a same-sex wedding, and strengthened private property rights while weakening the government’s regulatory powers over the environment.

Several experts told The Epoch Times that the left cannot accept the conservative majority on the Supreme Court, so it will keep agitating against it and try to undermine its legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

To remedy the supposed crisis at the court, Mr. Durbin backs the proposed Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act of 2023, which his committee approved on a party-line vote in July.

The proposal, which Republicans have denounced as unconstitutional, would create a system allowing members of the public to file complaints against justices for violating the proposed code of conduct or for engaging “in conduct that undermines the integrity of the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Among other things, it would also impose mandatory recusal standards and create a panel of lower court judges to investigate complaints against the Supreme Court.

Democrats are proposing their code of conduct “so they can control the Supreme Court," said Steven J. Allen, a distinguished senior fellow at Capital Research Center, a watchdog group.

"They’re doing this to get rid of one or more Republican appointees so they can be replaced,” Mr. Allen said.

Mr. Durbin, a longtime antagonist of Justice Clarence Thomas, who's considered by many to be the court’s preeminent conservative jurist, has been particularly focused on the justice’s alleged transgressions.

Liberal groups have called upon Justice Thomas to recuse himself from a plethora of cases related to the election and to President Trump’s ongoing criminal prosecutions. They argue that Justice Thomas and his wife are too close to Republicans.

Veteran Supreme Court watcher Curt Levey, president of the conservative Committee for Justice, said it's a one-way street.

“What are the odds that Senate Democrats would call on one of the liberal justices to recuse if that justice’s spouse had expressed strong public opinions about the 2020 election being fair?” he said.

They would never demand that a liberal justice recuse "because a spouse had expressed political opinions about newsworthy events," he said.

Jim Burling, vice president of legal affairs for the Pacific Legal Foundation, a national nonprofit public interest law firm that challenges government abuses, said the Durbin-backed SCERT bill and his committee’s investigation of conservative justices is an effort “to try to limit the legitimacy of the court.”

“They don’t like the fact that we have a court nowadays that’s not doing what the progressives think that the court should be doing,” he said.

“It upsets them that they can’t win the case on the merits, so you just throw mud around instead and try to obfuscate what the real issue is here," he said.

I heard the bells on Christmas day
      Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace of earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
      The belfries of all Christendom
      Had rolled along th'unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
      "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men."

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day
      A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

        1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Says the idiot who gets everything wrong about Christian doctrine and history. And what is wrong about taking someone to the Ark museum? Really, are you so scared that you can't allow countervailing thought to be presented? I mean we went to the Sacred Heart Mission State Park when I was in 4th grade and I didn't convert to Catholicism. Gee, there is nothing educational or culturally relevant in understanding what (some) members of the majority of the country's religious beliefs doctrine is? Oh, I get it, you're one of those atheists who are so threatened by religion that you think freedom of religion is freedom from religion and all public acclimation or expressions of faith should be banned, because you are to weak and threatened by what you don't understand and obviously don't even try to understand. Oh, and as for churches having schisms over doctrine, that's as old as Christianity itself. As for peace and love, the saying is love the sinner, condemn the sin. There is no forgiveness without repentance. Accepting sin is not love. As for the world, pretty sure the ones causing the most trouble currently, in regards to peace, are followers of religious that rejected Christ, including Atheist China. Your understanding of religion is delusional. It's all bumper sticker level trope.

Whining about 120 then Texas is getting 10,000.

    https://www.thecentersquare.com/texas/article_a2cc712c-a10c-11ee-9f6c-cb332433b6e3.html

Texas' governor is pushing back against claims made by Chicago's mayor after the Windy City received the first flight from Texas transporting 120 migrants from the border. The mayor complained as 10,000 people illegally entered one area of Texas, inundating Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection agents and state and local law enforcement.

Mayor Brandon Johnson took aim at Texas Gov. Greg Abbott this week, accusing him of creating chaos at the southern border. He said, "The issue is not just how we respond in the city of Chicago. It's the fact that we have a governor, a governor, an elected official, in the state of Texas that is placing families on buses without shoes, cold, wet, tired, hungry, afraid, traumatized. And then they come to the city of Chicago, where we have homelessness, we have mental health clinics that have been shut down and closed, you have people who are seeking employment.

In response to his comments, Gov. Abbott's press secretary Andrew Mahaleris, told The Center Square. "Mayor Johnson is flat out lying. If he truly cared about these migrants, he would stop spreading falsehoods and complaining about a few thousand migrants being bused into his sanctuary city. Instead, Mayor Johnson should call on President Biden to take immediate action to secure the border—something the President continues failing to do."

Johnson made the remarks after the city filed 55 lawsuits against 77 "rogue buses" for transporting illegal foreign nationals from the border that violated new city rules governing when and where they can be dropped off, The Chicago Tribune reported. Over 24,400 have arrived since August 2022. However, the Biden administration had been transporting illegal foreign nationals well before that, including unaccompanied minors. Since 2015, Illinois has received 10,755 unaccompanied minors, The Center Square first reported.

In response to Chicago's action against buses, Texas launched its first migrant flight to the Windy City from El Paso on Dec. 19, with 120 migrants arriving that night.

"Because Mayor Johnson is failing to live up to his city's 'Welcoming City' ordinance by targeting migrant buses from Texas, we are expanding our operation to include flights to Chicago, like the Biden Administration has been doing across the country," Mahaleris said. The difference is that Texas is being transparent; "President Biden has been flying planeloads of migrants all around the country and oftentimes in the cover of night," he said.

Texas has transported more than 25,300 people to Chicago since August 2022 after they illegally entered the U.S. and were unlawfully released into Texas by the Biden administration, Gov. Abbott has argued. Chicago was the third sanctuary city destination chosen by Abbott when he began his busing strategy in April 2022.

Everyone who boards a bus or plane leaving Texas for one of six self-described sanctuary cities willingly chooses to go there, according to Texas policy. The adults sign voluntary consent waivers for themselves and the minors under their care, which are available in multiple languages, prior to boarding. The waivers state they agreed on the destination, Mahaleris said.

"Each bus is stocked with food and water and makes stops along the trip to refuel and switch drivers. Migrants are allowed to purchase any extra provisions or disembark at any of these stops, as they have been processed and released by the federal government," he said.

As Johnson complained about 120 people on a flight, Texas is experiencing a crisis in Eagle Pass, with over 4,500 people being processed in one day at one CBP facility nearby after over 5,000 were already being held inside, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. In addition to that, on Saturday alone, in one enforcement action after stopping a single driver, Eagle Pass CBP officers seized fentanyl and heroin with a street value of nearly $1 million.

            1. mtrueman   1 year ago

Same as you'll find in any dictionary.
              gen·o·cide
              /ˈjenəˌsīd/
              noun
the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.

Do you have a particular definition you prefer to use?

              1. JesseAz   1 year ago

How is killing less than 1% of a population genocide when they could easily kill all of them?

I'm trying to understand how you choose to falsely use words.

And from your definition, does deliberate killing apply to all wars or engagements? Did Obama commit genocide in Afghanistan?

                1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"How is killing less than 1% of a population genocide "

If 1% is a large number, then it's genocide. Read the definition if you're confused.

"when they could easily kill all of them?"

It's easier to let Palestinians die of hunger and disease. Dropping bombs costs money. Money that Americans will be called upon to provide. Hunger and disease are the preferred tools of genocidalists whether it's Pol Pot or Bibi.

                      "What is a large number?"

Maybe your dictionary can help you. Check 'large' then 'number' and figure it out from there.

"Why are you relying on vague terms?"

Is your dictionary less vague? What definition do you prefer? One that avoids using words like 'large' and 'number?'

Saving democracy one state at a time.
    https://www.frontpagemag.com/oregon-dems-ban-republicans-from-running-for-office/
Oregon Dems Ban Republicans From Running for Office
It’s the kind of “attack on democracy” that Democrats love.
After years of trying to “protect democracy” and “fortify democracy”, Democrats finally succeeded in Oregon where they banned Republicans from running for office.
That’s what the Democrat flavor of democracy looks like.
When the Tennessee House of Representatives temporarily expelled two Democrats who had taken part in an insurrection on its grounds, the media quickly turned it into a national story.
The move by the Republican majority was an “attack on democracy”.
But when the Democrat majority in Oregon banned half the Republican Senate delegation from running for reelection, that has been treated as a local story. And not an “attack on democracy”.
While much of Oregon is actually conservative, some urban and suburban populations tilt the state sharply leftward. Oregon’s conservatives, who have been otherwise shut out of the legislative process, have taken to protesting extreme bills by staging walkouts.

"You justify killing any Jewish civilian, but gain outrage when they defend themselves. "

Palestinians have a right to resist. They have had this right for more than 70 years. Killing civilians, Jewish, Christian or Muslim is a war crime. Same for targeting civilian infrastructure like hospitals, churches, schools and so on. Those who perpetrate such crime should be held accountable.

                    "Youre anti Semitic."

"...Imagine condemning the people who oppose war..."

        3. damikesc   1 year ago

"Why don’t they just give up on their apartheid and genocide?"

Are Arabs allowed in Israel? Are they allowed to serve in the Knesset? The answer for both is yes.

Are Jews allowed in "Palestine"? No. They also have no real government outside of terrorist groups, so no, they cannot serve in government either.

Not sure why you support the anti-Jewish apartheid, but you do, so that is on you.

As far as genocide, when their population number reduces, then maybe we can talk.

If Israel wanted to commit a genocide...they would do so. Easily.

"I’m concerned with the war mongering stance of a supposedly Libertarian magazine. Imagine condemning the people who oppose war."

You condemn Israel who tried to avoid and applaud the Jordanians who intentionally caused it.

          1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Are Arabs allowed in Israel? Are they allowed to serve in the Knesset? The answer for both is yes."

No Arabs for Gaza or the West Bank. These are occupied territories. That's where all the trouble stems from. If Israel were to extend the same conditions for Israeli Arabs to the territories, then things would certainly be different.

"Are Jews allowed in “Palestine”? "

Sure they are. They call them settlers, and are engaged in land theft. The Israel government condones the practice, and Americans participate and fund it. Again, it's surprising that American Libertarians are so supportive of these crimes.

"As far as genocide, when their population number reduces, then maybe we can talk."

Isn't their population falling now? Doesn't that count?

"You condemn Israel who tried to avoid and applaud the Jordanians who intentionally caused it."

                "They are Jordanians."

"Israel, mind you, tried to get people to evacuate Gaza. Can you guess who stopped them? "

Sure Gazans. People have been living there for thousands of years. Many consider it their home.

"1. Where’s the apartheid? Muslims live quite freely as citizens of Israel."

The occupied territories, namely Gaza and the West Bank. One set of Laws for Jews, another for non-Jews.

"2. Where’s the genocide? The populations of Gaza and the West Bank have increased year after year."

Again, occupied territories. Cutting food, water, medicine, fuel and compounding this with indiscriminate violence, is killing tens of thousands.

"3. These “kids” are disrupting traffic, vandalizing monuments, attacking people who oppose them, and a number of them want Sharia law in the US."

It's worse. Some of them are actually, openly, wearing checkered scarves. Libertarians across the nation are in shock.

        1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

          1. The "Occupied Territories" aren't exactly so occupied. They voted and elected Hamas to lead them and govern them. Without their actions on October 7, 2023, none of the water or electricity would've been cut to Gaza.

          2. You do realize there are consequences for a) electing a government made of terrorists who then spend money on armaments instead of electricity generation and water generation, and b) leaving your electricity and water in the hand of those you just decided to massacre?

          3. Even without "checkered scarves", do you not hear what they are saying and watch what they are doing?

          4. Misconstrueman, are you some kind of antisemite, with a favorite Nazi and all?

          1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"1. The “Occupied Territories” aren’t exactly so occupied."

They are not exactly free either. Deprive a population of their freedom and they will eventually rebel, often with horrific consequences. It's human nature. Again, I thought all this would be second nature to a Libertarian.

Egypt ALSO has them "blocked" in. The wall Israel has? Egypt has one as well.

              Nobody seems to care.

                "Nobody seems to care."

Nobody but Israel is obliged to care. Israel voluntarily signed all those treaties. Actions have consequences. Libertarians should know this.

                1. damikesc   1 year ago

The treaties were violated by the Jordanians in Gaza et al.

You do not get to violate a treaty and have the other side still abide by it.

Funny how you equate genocide with not giving someone something. Gaza and WB are given billions a year to squander it. And you blame the jews.

              They choose not to.

Are you claiming it's lack of money that is responsible for all the hunger, disease and violent death in Gaza? And this is the fault of Hamas? Or trannies? or what exactly?

                1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Fault of Hamas. Yes. Even Palestinians understand that. They just hate Israel more.

                    "They just hate Israel more."

I agree. If Israel wants the love of Palestinians, dropping the apartheid and genocide should help things along.

                    1. damikesc   1 year ago

Why the hell would the Israelis want their love? Arabs do not want their love.

They do not expect the love of anybody.

Just, you know, stop lobbing rockets.

"Why the hell would the Israelis want their love? "

Maybe eventually they'll settle for peace. They will have to drop their apartheid and genocide, of course, but as long as America is willing to help with lavish assistance, what's the incentive?

                    3. damikesc   1 year ago

At this point, Israel should go ahead and commit a genocide. If you will be accused of it regardless, at least make it worth it.

damikesc: Not "commit a genocide" but "execute war criminals". That's what October 7 was - military forces of the government of Gaza, out of uniform, attacked Israel and committed rapes, torture, and murders of civilians, clearly following a plan to commit as many war crimes as possible before Israeli forces could react. Every one of those attackers, and every one of those that sent them, should be executed for war crimes.

That requires first a military conquest of Gaza. IF the civilians that Hamas chose to put in the way were completely innocent, it's still well within the laws of war for Israel to use whatever force they are able to apply to target the illegal combatants hiding behind them, and it's just too bad for the civilians killed in the process.

But they are not innocent. Their ancestors got to Gaza in the first place by leaving their homes to follow the Arab armies closing in on Israel in 1948, intending to "push the Jews into the sea" (that is, murder all of them - a real genocide!), and loot their houses. That failed and Israel would not let those genocidal maniacs back within their borders to try to accomplish by sneak murders what they failed to do openly.

More recently they voted for Hamas (one time). They've tolerated that criminal organization keeping control of their land, speaking for them, and indoctrinating their children to prefer murdering Israelis to living themselves.

Cutting of the food, water, medicine and fuel to a confined population all the while subjecting them to indiscriminate violence is the way to go. Chanting from the river to the sea never hurt anything except your feelings.

            1. damikesc   1 year ago

Since when is it Israel's obligation to provide free food, medicine, or water to another sovereign country?

Not their job to do it. That they DID so was, you know, kindness.

When somebody is doing you a favor, slaughtering over a thousand of their citizens will end that post haste.

"all the while subjecting them to indiscriminate violence is the way to go."

Perhaps lobbing rockets ad infinitum is a bad strategy?

"Chanting from the river to the sea never hurt anything except your feelings."

"Since when is it Israel’s obligation to provide free food, medicine, or water to another sovereign country?"

They are obliged as signatories to international treaties to care for the refugees. They have been since the founding of Israel.

"That they DID so was, you know, kindness."

                No, it's a legal obligation.

"When somebody is doing you a favor,"

Imposing apartheid and perpetrating genocide against a population is doing them any favors. Libertarians shouldn't have to be told this.

"Perhaps lobbing rockets ad infinitum is a bad strategy?"

Trouble is that peaceful, unarmed demonstrations are a worse strategy. It's liable to get participants sniped at or beaten.

"Calling a tranny their “dead name” does less than that yet these same yahoos (almost exactly the same yahoos) bitch about that constantly"

Not sure the relevance. Aside from your desire to bitch about trannies.

                1. damikesc   1 year ago

There are no refugees. There are people who left their homes in 1948 when Arab states told them to while they obliterate Israel. Then those countries lost. C'est la vie. They need to get over it. They stole the land from Jews as is.

                  "No, it’s a legal obligation."

No, it really is not. Please do not let your hatred of Jews make you an idiot.

"Not sure the relevance. Aside from your desire to bitch about trannies."

Their ancestors CHOSE to leave their homes. That is not being a refugee. That is called MOVING. Israel even asked them to stay.

Poor choices were made and their ancestors chose to forfeit the land they didn't actually own anyway.

                    4. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Their ancestors CHOSE to leave their homes."

The problem for Israel is that Palestinians are choosing to resist apartheid and genocide. If Israel doesn't manage to exterminate the lot of them, and there are over 7 million, the problem for Israel will only worsen. Or they can give up apartheid and genocide. That's the relevant choice Israel faces today.

                    5. damikesc   1 year ago

"The problem for Israel is that Palestinians are choosing to resist apartheid and genocide."

By advocating for apartheid and genocide. You pick winners.

"If Israel doesn’t manage to exterminate the lot of them, and there are over 7 million, the problem for Israel will only worsen. Or they can give up apartheid and genocide. That’s the relevant choice Israel faces today."

Killing them all seems to be the better alternative at this point.

It's not like Gazans or West Bank residents will be missed.

                2. Commenter_XY   1 year ago

That is actually not the case = Israel must care for refugees

Rules are different in a declared war. Israel must allow in food, water, medical supplies, which they do. Israel actually does much more than the minimum required.

Hamas can end this war by surrendering.

                  1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Rules are different in a declared war. "

So genocide is OK as long as they say the magic words?

"Hamas can end this war by surrendering."

I don't think that's in the cards. They seem more than willing to give their lives to the cause. I think they will only give up the fight after significant concessions from Israel. It seems wildly optimistic to believe that Israel's continued destruction of hospitals, schools, churches, markets (did you hear that, Libertarians? Markets!) not to mention people will result in surrender.

                    1. damikesc   1 year ago

They want to give their lives to the "cause" and Israel is bad for helping them achieve their goal?

                    2. mtrueman   1 year ago

"and Israel is bad for helping them achieve their goal?"

It's worse than a crime, it's a blunder, said one Napoleonic general, if memory serves. Destroying hospitals, and murdering babies is no doubt emotionally satisfying over the short term, but in the long run it doesn't serve Israelis, or Jews in general.

                    3. damikesc   1 year ago

Man, such emotional caterwauling over inaccurate claims.

The side you support threw babies in ovens.

                      Tell me more, please.

Do you think Israelis are going to become friendlier to the Gazan Jordanians?

                    4. mtrueman   1 year ago

                      "Tell me more, please."

Be glad to. Right after you respond to the claims I've made. If they are wrong, it should be easy for you.

        2. A Thinking Mind   1 year ago

Also, what a really dumbass retort. You said they opposed genocide, and it's clear from their words that they're very much PRO-Genocide of a different target.

You can't call them chanting "Gas the Jews" as standing up against genocide.

          1. mtrueman   1 year ago

Wearing checkered scarves isn't support for genocide. You've been misinformed. Chanting 'gas the jews' is genocidal, and I advise you to denounce the practice. I will join you. Still with Israel's genocidal actions, combined with the claim that Israel acts on behalf of all Jews, is a recipe for ever increasing levels of antisemitic violence. It's already here and only going to get worse. You want to prevent that? I do, and I'm certain the extermination of Palestinians won't help.

Resistance can be ugly. That's why the calls are for a ceasefire and negotiated political settlement.

Still, without resistance, even ugly, violent and terroristic resistance, can be a positive catalyst for change.

Look at the Achile Lauro affair. It was only after that Israelis and Americans were willing to officially recognize and sit down and negotiate with Palestinian leadership.

mtrue, they're not anti-war. That you believe they are is a bit sad, really.

They aren't calling on Hamas to do a ceasefire (they rejected a proposal from Egypt). ONLY Israel.

                  1. mtrueman   1 year ago

                    "mtrue, they’re not anti-war."

Worse, they are anti apartheid and anti genocide. I think a long term ceasefire is the prerequisit for a negotiated political settlement. Continued bombing is means a committment to a status quo that is unsustainable. America is Israel's only supporter. As the empire erodes and Americans turn their attention inward, Israel will have to appease the Palestinians.

                    1. damikesc   1 year ago

"Worse, they are anti apartheid and anti genocide."

Given they support a people and government who use explicit calls for genocide, I am starting to wonder if you're able to notice things.

"I think a long term ceasefire is the prerequisit for a negotiated political settlement. "

                      They had one. Until 10/7.

It is now time for the Jordanians in Gaza and West Bank to actually do some work and show that they can be trusted. There are DECADES of evidence that they cannot be.

"Continued bombing is means a committment to a status quo that is unsustainable."

Nah. Not bombing incessantly has led to a unsustainable status quo. Been tried for decades. A different tactic is going to be tried.

                      "America is Israel’s only supporter."

Gee, the world hates Jews. Shocker.

As was noted in the past --- when it was relevant, the world was pro-Holocaust. I am proud of this country standing behind Israel. We need to simply stop holding them back.

"As the empire erodes and Americans turn their attention inward, Israel will have to appease the Palestinians."

Or increase the violence. Arab states aren't exactly flocking to the side of Hamas. They want them gone, too.

                    2. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Given they support a people and government who use explicit calls for genocide, "

Israel's explicit calls for genocide? I denounce them. I believe once Israel sets aside their subjugation of Palestinians, only then can peace be achieved through a negotiated political settlement.

"They had one. Until 10/7. "

They were treated as second class subhumans. They resisted. It shouldn't come as a surprise.

"There are DECADES of evidence that they cannot be."

Never trust a slave. That slave will always be hankering after freedom and dignity. Never forget that. Never trust a slave.

"A different tactic is going to be tried."

Let me guess. Is this where your trannies enter the picture?

                      "the world was pro-Holocaust. "

We're making progress. Once it was the world, now it's only America and Israel, with a tip of the hat to Vanuatu and a few other island paradise holocaust boosters.

"Or increase the violence. Arab states aren’t exactly flocking to the side of Hamas. They want them gone, too."

Because they are afraid of them. These states are corrupt and fear a commitment to freedom and dignity. And it's lucky they seem reluctant to broaden the war. My fear is that circumstances beyond their control will draw them and the rest of the world into a much wider conflict.

    AOC on Instagram:

“In the story of Christmas, Christ was born in modern-day Palestine under the threat of a government engaged in the mass genocide of innocents,” she wrote. “Thousands of years later, right-wing forces are violently occupying Bethlehem as similar stories unfold for today’s Palestinians, so much so that the Christian community in Bethlehem has canceled this year’s Christmas Eve celebrations both out of safety and respect.”

She continued, arguing that Jesus himself would likely be on the side of Palestinians during the war.

“The entire story of Christmas and Christ himself is about standing with the poor and powerless, the marginalized and the maligned, the refugees and the immigrants, the outcast and misunderstood, without exception,” she wrote. “This high Christian holiday is about the precious sanctity of a family that, if the story were to unfold today, would be Jewish Palestinians.”

If they were Jewish Palestinians, they would've been quite dead long before now.

The whole damn story's a desert legend, so Ol' Crazy Eyes started out wrong.

      1. Truthfulness   1 year ago

Not so. Historians, both Christian and non-Christian, affirm the event of Jesus' birth.

        1. markm23   1 year ago

You have been listening to liars, if not making up fiction yourself. Roman records did not mention Jesus. None of Rome's rivals even heard of him until much later. The only historical mention from the entire 1st Century after his alleged birth and death was a few lines in Josephus's history - but the language of that mention is that of a Christian copyist centuries later, not the language one would expect from Josephus the Pharisee.

          1. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

True on all counts. And the Romans would never have conducted a census and taxed citizens by insisting they go back to the town of their birth. Doing that would require months and years to get the word out throughout the Empire and months and years for people to do all the travelling.

The Romans, like all tax collectors, were brutes and thugs, but they weren't stupid.

Also, contrary to what creches portray., it would have taken years of travelling by camel for The Three Wise Men to get from Persia to Bethlehem. Who is The Church trying to kid?

My own city, New York, faced some high-profile vigilante justice in a subway killing of a mentally deranged homeless man that went viral.

Good article, Liz, but I could hardly describe what happened as "vigilante justice." This guy was seemingly only concerned with stopping the homeless guy from hurting people, he wasn't trying to enact street justice or play cop. He was simply trying to stop someone who appeared threatening to him and to others.

    1. Nazi-Chipping Warlock   1 year ago

And whom, it should be noted, had been a threat for many years.

    2. Nazi-Chipping Warlock   1 year ago

Speaking of New York, there is a post on Zero Hedge I'm not going to bother trying to link to about Remington Arms packing up and leaving for Alabama. Mostly because New York sucks to run a business in, and particularly a firearms business.

      1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

Not from ZeroHedge, but this sums it up:

        https://thegunzone.com/is-remington-firearms-moving-out-of-ny-for-alabama/

        1. Why is Remington Firearms moving to Alabama?

Remington Firearms is moving to Alabama to escape the stringent gun control laws in New York and to find a more business-friendly environment.

        7. What are the economic implications of Remington Firearms’ move to Alabama?

The move is expected to bring jobs and economic growth to Alabama while impacting the economy of New York.

        9. What led to Remington Firearms’ decision to move to Alabama?

Remington Firearms cited the need for a more favorable political and business environment as well as a central location for its operations as reasons for the move to Alabama.

        10. Will Remington Firearms maintain a presence in New York after the move?

Remington Firearms has not announced plans to maintain a significant presence in New York following its move to Alabama.

        13. Is Remington Firearms the only firearms company to leave New York?

No, Remington Firearms is not the only firearms company to leave New York. Other companies have also cited the state’s restrictive gun laws as a reason for their relocation.

Liz is a true-blue shanda. Of the 1,139 killed (the actual count is 1,139, not 1,400 or 1,200), 695 were Israeli civilians and 71 were foreign civilians. The rest were either Shin Bet, soldiers or police. And those burnt children? Israeli hellfire missiles. Those concertgoers? Also hit from Israeli helicopters. Israeli intelligence even received warnings about a potential attack, hours before it occurred, and decided to let the party rip instead of evacuate.

    https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2023-12-05/ty-article/.premium/despite-intel-warnings-about-a-hamas-attack-the-army-didnt-evacuate-the-nova-festival/0000018c-3993-dc03-a9ec-3dfb2cda0000

Israeli press isn't too chickenshit to talk about all this, or the suitcases of cash Netanyahu sent to Hamas, or a lot of the other stupid shit his government has been up to. Why is Reason so scared?

They evidently still fear slurred as antisemites. It's the same as most establishment figures. That's why the focus of America's latest antiwar movement is Jews, who can't be be tarred as antisemites, and young people, who are idealistic, committed and aren't part of the establishment and are suspicious and antagonistic to it.

          1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

Yes, let's discuss you for a moment. You claim Israel has apartheid when they have Arabs and even Muslims in the country (not Gaza; not West Bank) who vote and can even be elected to the Knesset. You claim there is a genocide against Gaza and the West Bank when population numbers there have been increasing. Odd genocide. You even claim to have a favorite Nazi. All of this strikes me as you being an antisemite and even possibly a Nazi here, Misconstrueman. You misconstrue the facts to push your leftist and even possibly Nazi agenda at every turn.

              So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
              Or let me die!
              The Child is father of the Man;

Also, this was a really shit year for Hollywood movies. Oppenheimer was good, but almost everything else I saw or else heard of was pure trash. Godzilla came along at the end of the year to show that it's clearly an issue with American studios because it had the temerity to tell a good story about actual characters.

    1. damikesc   1 year ago

Movies have not been very good for a while. Superhero movies' box office numbers covered that up some, but now that they don't make a lot of money, either --- well, the problems are more apparent.

Years from now, if it turns out as influential as it promises, we may realize the election of Milei overshadowed all else that happened in 2023. And it was good. Trump's election in 2016 looked great, and still does, but this will likely be even bigger and better.

    1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Trump’s election in 2016 looked great, and still does, but this will likely be even bigger and better."

I agree. The election of 2016 was excellent entertainment. Trump's subsequent 4 years of 'swamp draining' looks worse and worse.

    2. Richard Bees   1 year ago

Milei may have been the high point of the year. I hope Argentina turns into a capitalist powerhouse, like Hong Kong was before the commies throttled it. Not that anyone in the media would take notice, they'e still trying to get student loans paid off.

2020 was a dress rehearsal for what happened if Trump won the election, my thought is they'll try it again this year, but no one's going to sit there and watch it this time. I've purchased my own set of Roof Koreans for the festivities.

Democrats care deeply for minorities. Every 4 years, for about 6 months, then they drop them like a hot rock.

Hopefully recent developments will force the last few Jews out of the Democratic Party. I'm not sure the party even spent 6 months on them the last 12 years.

It's hard to get excited another 4 years for a party to the left of the Syrian Communist Party.

You're right about one thing: there will be blood.

"New York, faced some high-profile vigilante justice in a subway killing of a mentally deranged homeless man that went viral."

"high-profile vigilante justice"?!? Give it a rest, for crying out loud. The guy was simply trying to control a very real threat to the passengers on the train. Why not point the finger at those really responsible Neely's death: the authorities in your beloved city and state of New York who failed to institutionalize Neely, to protect both him and others.

Not a peep on the 20K folks bombed into pieces by US supplies bombs in Gaza LIz? Your live in NYC...ok I get it...

As for the death of wokeness on campuses due to students saying things which were immature/stu[de at best but their intentions regarding the 60-year occupation of land needs to be stamped down? Now these schools pushed cultural marxism ('white supremacy, privilege, and anti-European American shit for decades often by Jewish academics) but now wokeness needs to go. Where was the media outcry when these schools smeared Italian or Irish Americans Liz. Sorry but your outcry is telling "white males"...can be ruthlessly attacked by academics and not a peep. You know Italian Americans are way underrepresented at Ivy League schools..why is that Liz?
