Belgium Destroys Thousands of Miller High Life Cans Over 'Champagne of Beers' Slogan
Plus: No one is excited about a 2024 rematch between Biden and Trump, it's showtime for House Republicans' debt ceiling bill, and more...

Belgium is showing us food protectionism at its silliest. Belgian customs officials have destroyed than 2,000 cans of the beer Miller High Life at the behest of the champagne lobby. The Comité Champagne—a trade association representing "the common interests of Champagne houses and growers"—objected to Miller High Life's slogan: "The Champagne of Beers."
Miller High Life has used this slogan for more than a century. It is clearly a metaphor meant to denote the (alleged) high quality of Miller High Life beer, not to mislead consumers into thinking that the beer is literally champagne.
Nonetheless, the Comité Champagne objected that the slogan infringed on the protected status of the word champagne, which in the European Union can only be used to refer to a sparkling wine derived from and produced in the Champagne region of France. And so cases of Miller High Life destined for a customer in Germany were seized at the Belgian port of Antwerp on Friday.
"Molson Coors Beverage Co., which owns the Miller High Life brand, does not currently export it to the EU, and Belgian customs declined to say who had ordered the beer," reports the Associated Press. "No matter how popular the slogan is in the United States, it is incompatible with European Union rules, which make clear that goods infringing a protected designation of origin can be treated as counterfeit."
Designation of origin protections are common in Europe, and have been granted to everything from cheese to wine to tomatoes.
Americans often give this scheme a little eyeroll. The snobbery! The pretentiousness! The protectionism!
But the U.S. isn't immune from this sort of silliness. For instance, we have official rules about the word mayonnaise: It must contain eggs, vinegar or lemon juice, and at least 65 percent vegetable oil. And that's just one of many food terms micromanaged by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and by various state laws.
Many of these rules spring from trade associations representing one particular food sector or other (such as the Egg Board's attempts to go after a vegan "mayo" product that didn't contain eggs). And as the U.S. market for nut milks and imitation-meat products has grown, politicians and regulators have been pushing for stricter rules around what can legally be called "milk," "meat," and more—with these pushes often coming from politicians whose states have strong meat or dairy industries.
Often, vegetarian and vegan imitators of meat and dairy products are accused of trying to fool consumers—even when these products are specifically marketed as meat and dairy alternatives and use phrases like "dairy free" or "vegetarian" prominently on their labels. Their use of common terms like "burger" and "milk" is meant to give consumers a frame a reference, not to fool them into thinking they're eating real beef or cow's milk. The push to ban these products from using terms like milk or meat doesn't really represent an effort to protect consumer from deception; it's a desperate, cronyist attempt by big, entrenched industries to thwart potential competitors.
But the makers of veggie versions of meat, dairy, and egg products have been having some success in U.S. courts and regulatory agencies in recent years. For instance, in 2021, a federal court ruled in favor of Miyoko's Creamery in a lawsuit challenging the California Department of Food and Agriculture's determination that the vegan creamery couldn't use terms like cheese and butter. Last year, The Tofurky Company scored a win for veggie "meat" and "sausages," with a federal court striking down Louisiana's Truth in Labeling of Food Products Act, which had banned the use of these terms on plant-based, vegan, or vegetarian products. And this past February, the FDA released draft regulatory guidance that would let "plant-based milk alternatives" keep using the term milk.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats are excited about a 2024 rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. In a new NBC poll, 70 percent of those surveyed said Biden shouldn't seek reelection (just 26 percent said he should) and 60 percent didn't want to see Trump run again (just 35 percent said that he should).
Age was "a major reason" Biden shouldn't run, offered by 34 percent of all registered voters polled and 48 percent of those who said he should not run for reelection. Among all registered voters polled, 15 percent called it "a minor reason" he shouldn't run again.
The survey did have some good news for Trump. Republican primary voters were asked whether, "given the investigations into Donald Trump," it was "important to nominate a candidate who will not be distracted" or to "support him now to stop his opponents." A full 68 percent said to support him now, while just 26 percent chose the other option.

House Republicans have four votes to spare in spending battle. This week the GOP is trying to pass a bill in the House of Representatives that would raise the U.S. debt limit but cut government spending. "With the health of both the economy and his speakership potentially on the line in the debt-limit fight, [Speaker Kevin] McCarthy and his allies have begun the process of wrangling the 218 votes needed for passage of their plan," reports The Wall Street Journal. "In the narrowly divided 222–213 House, Republicans can afford no more than four defections, if all Democrats vote no, as expected."

No one is excited about a 2024 rematch between Biden and Trump...
MSNBC might be.
I would say the entire Democrat establishment is excited, and the media have the biggest hard-ons since the pandemic pogroms.
They're laying back & thinking of baseball right now so they can maybe last until the election.
My most recent pay test was for a 12-hour-per-week internet job for $9,500. For months, my sister’s friend has been making an average of 15,000, and she puts in about 20 hours every week. As soon as I gave it a try, I was shocked at how simple it was…

Belgian customs officials have destroyed than 2,000 cans of the beer Miller High Life...
I destroyed 23 Yuenglings over the weekend.
Lol
I have a good idea who ordered the American beer for German import. I saw a documentary once about an underground beer drinking contest with National teams competing
Does the documentary end with shooting the boot? I think I saw that one too, very informative.
I think it ends with an aging Country Music star recruiting a team for a cannabis competition
I saw that documentary as well I guess the Germans don't want to loose again
They were trying to substitute High Life for the ram's piss they usually train with, but the Belgians thwarted their cunning plan.

Confession: for about a year after they started marketing Yuengling in south Texas, I thought it was an import from Taiwan or Hong Kong.
Is it any good?
Taste is, of course, subjective but if you like lager it is objectively good.
Funny how debt increases are always the nearest Republican's fault in the world of proggies like ENB.
Team (R) always refuses to raise taxes enough to balance the budget, like any decent libertarian would.
Was ENB finding fault with the Republicans here?
If you read the entirety of her and reasons takes about the gop not being serious then see the non praise when they actually seek to cut spending, it adds up to a view of their actual care about spending cuts. Reason has even started advocating for more taxes in some cases.
Are you actually trying to tell me the GOP is serious about cutting spending? 'cause if you are, I'm just going to go ahead and alugh in your face. They've taken entitlements and military spending off the board completely. Non-"defense" discretionary spending is the smallest slice of the budget pie, and it would have to be eliminated (not cut, eliminated) to balance the budget. Anyone who thinks that has a non-zero chance of happening should take a look at this lovely bridge I have for sale.
The GOP hasn't been anything close to serious about fiscal responsibility since Bill Clinton left office. The Bush II and Trump administrations both prove that. Both featured bloated, unproductive spending with no plans to pay for it. Even under Obama, the best they could manage was to get the deficit back down to Bush's pre-crisis baseline.
The few cuts the GOP has actually proposed are both extremely modest and not terribly likely to happen. I don't see much to praise about that. But, hey, gotta pwn teh libz, whether it actually benefits the country or not.

Funny how some people have to make it personal about the writers here at Reason, rather than anything of substance or related to the story.
"Let's shit on Reason!" is the official sport of the commenters. If that means (often ridiculous) personal attacks, incredibly selective reading, deliberate misreading, or just straight up not reading and skipping directly to complaining, so be it. They also like to complain that a particular author writes about a certain subject too much, only to nonsensically complain when that author writes about something else. Then there's complaining that Reason isn't really libertarian. This alternates with complaining that Reason is too crazily libertarian, sometimes from the same commenters. When all else fails, they've taken to adopting the old lefty strategy, now also popular with the right, of simply ignoring the plain meaning of words and claiming those words mean whatever they want. "Fascism" is a prime example, along with "socialism". At this point, both words essentially just mean "anything I don't like". "Grooming" and "CRT" are more recent additions to the list.
It's really pretty sad. I have fond, distant memories of actual debate and civil discussion in the comments here. Now it's mostly just shit-flinging by people with no slightest hint of actual libertarian principles. Just to make it a little worse, most of them have no imagination and just post the same bullshit over and over. Honestly, the spambots contribute about as much to discussion as the typical Reason commenter these days.
For the last several decades, spending has grown fastest when the GOP held Congress and the Presidency. The only time Reps even pretend to be serious about fiscal responsibility is when they have a Dem President to bash. These days, even that is barely working. I can't help but suspect Ms. Brown has a somewhat better grasp on reality than you do.
Age was "a major reason" Biden shouldn't run...
Yeah, in-command-of-his-faculties-Biden was so much better for America.
But think of the respect America will have after his medical resignation with the giggler-in-chief running things for us. Just imagine the entire USA run as well as the southern border is now.
If she takes over now it doesn't constitutionally count as a full term, does it?
At this point (more than half way through Biden's presidential term, yes, it would count against her.
I think you meant won't count against her. She would need more than 2 years as president to count as her having a full term.
Yes, if she takes over now she can run for her first term in 2024 and re-election in 2028, and be term limited out after 2032.
OTOH, if they can somehow keep the "Weekend at
Bernie'sBiden's" act going until the mid-point of his second term (January 21, 2027, IOW) then she can take over at that point, run for her first term in 2028, re-election in 2032 and finally be term limited out after 2036. So, 16 combined years of "Weekend at Biden's" and "The Cackler" instead of 12.The only way Harris is ever going to get elected is if the GOP is stupid enough to keep nominating Trump or similar losers. Too bad that's entirely possible.
But if Cackles takes the executive office, there would be a short window for her replacement--if, say, she was tragically lost at sea.
Which raises a question: who is Trump's ticket-mate going to be? It isn't going to be Pence again.
If the Republicans were smart they'd put up a woman of color. Not because those are the most important things, but because they could then use all of the nasty shit Democrats and the Media wouldn't be able to stop themselves from saying, in campaign ads.
Bad idea, the using a black candidate did not work in Georgia and it will not work here. If anything, I think many in the black community resented the idea that they could be used in this way.
Besides if you want to go this route why not dump Trump and go with Tim Scott as the lead?
But they were perfectly happy when the Democrats do it. See Maxine Waters. Or Kamala for fuck sake, Biden admitted that he was only going to pick a woman of color. So it's okay for Democrats to use the race card, but if a person of color is a conservative, the GOP shouldn't nominate them, because racism? How the fuck does that make sense to you? Even you can't explain away that logic. Pandering is okay except when it's not? Fuck you've said some stupid shit in the past, but that takes the cake.
Democrats have a long tradition of including minority candidates. Black women are not tokens in the party they are a strong part of the base. So appointing black women is supporting your base. This is not the case for Republicans where black members of Congress are few and black women members of Congress are non-existent.
Skin color is the most important thing
Might want to check your history. Before Johnson almost every single black ever elected to Congress was Republican.
Then why is that not the case today? Why have Republicans purged itself of so many black members?
Cite?
They never purged anyone. The GOP loves Thomas, Scott, Owens, Elders etc. Or are they not black?
Where the parties stood 60 years ago is utterly irrelevant. A whole lot of today's voters weren't even alive then. You can only rest on the past for so long. Like the man said, what have you done for me lately?
Oh, wow, my question has just been answered. Looks like it will be Trump/Carlson.
Talking to yourself again since you've "muted" so many people?
We're talking about two old farts running on the Geriatric Party ticket, when they should both be put out to pasture. Trump is only three years younger than Biden, and wasn never all that bright in the first place. Trump will be older than Biden was when he received so much Republican criticism for being too old to be running for President in 2020.
Did 'most obviously corrupt administration in US history' make the list?
Really? More obviously corrupt than the Nixon Administration?
Yes.
And not even close.
Nixon: someone broke into an apartment and he covered it up and the IRS tif they could target his political opponents. They said no, it never happened. Had the decency to resign after getting caught. Oversaw the disastrous Vietnam withdrawal, allowed a full and thorough report on what went wrong.
Biden: sold executive access to a geopolitical foe. Has actually used the DoJ to censor and attack his political opponents. Oversaw a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan than stated he was going to give a full report, instead he releases a report that even CBS news and CNN called whitewash and propaganda. Not only not resigning, running again and insisting he's a doing a good job but no one is smart enough to understand it.
Then again, looking at the paralleled between Biden and Nixon, they actually are pretty strikingly similar. Gee, I'm sure Mike has an argument that Biden is the Democratic Nixon. And Hunter should be his Watergate (or several other scandals, but the whistleblower stating that the Biden administration is directly hindering the investigation of Hunter is pretty much what the Watergate scandal was about, Nixon hindering and interfering in the investigation).
Are you old enough that you were actually around back then?
Cite?
Yes. I was a kid but remember it well. The break-in, the tapes, the coverup, the erased recordings, the impeachment, the resignation and the nomination of Stumblin’ Gerald Ford (mirrors the clumsiness of this administration too, haha) The Pardon that lost Ford the next election. The ousting of Agnew prior to the release of the evidence against Nixon. Definitely corrupt and in a similar fashion.
This regime with its suppression of incriminating evidence, corruption, weaponization of the DOJ, witch-hunting style, censorship and authoritarian tactics is far worse then I remember.
Have you seen this? Snopes says she is talking about Republicans but it clearly is in both party’s playbook. I know you are not fond of video links. It is Pelosi talking about the ‘Wrap up Smear’. Pay attention to the beginning when she talks about the press' part in the play. Sounds pretty familiar.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVZDrxI3AFU
You are correct. I’m not into watching partisan videos. And I have a policy of NEVER watching political speeches. Can you summarize what it says or link to some (preferably succinct) text?
Look up wrap up smear. it will summarize. Basically, create a story without any source, feed it to the media, keep repeating until it is accepted as truth, smear the candidate with that 'truth'. We've seen that played out over and over since 2016.
Wow I never saw that before. Very interesting. Pelosi has cited this tactic multiple times, around a period of time it is very clear her ilk uses the NYT and Wapo for this exact tactic (Russiagate, pee tape, basically everything in Steele dossier, the list is massive), where we have well documented evidence of the left using this tool...but its an authoritarian tool of the Republicans...ya, we are all buying it. You know those R's with their massive media/govt apparatus that carries their water, yup, I am totally familiar with this.
Iron woke law of projection, never fails.
So, slandering an opponent with the help of press who are sympathetic to your party. Doesn’t sound like something new under the sun.
Are we still on the topic of Biden supposedly being worse than Nixon? Do you know what Nixon operatives did to Martha Mitchell?
By the way, the vid is about 2 minutes. Is it partisan if the words come out of the mouth of Pelosi? I've given you the Snopes context but when you listen, is it not evident that the Dem playbook uses the same tactic regularly?
I'm not a fan of Nancy Pelosi, so I don't need convincing she is a person of questionable character.
There are 330,000,000 people in the U.S. and the best we can do is Biden/Trump?
Made the exact same comment. It’s really sad.
You're really sad. Stop eating so much soy.
To be fair, you have to be a special kind of narcissistic asshole to run for office in the first place, and even more so to run for president.
Can't we just strap all the narcissistic assholes to a wheel and spin it? I'll take my chances with a completely randomly selected member of almost any group of candidates larger than two.
The outcome couldn't be any worse.
Hold on. Without Biden normalizing dementia, stroked out Fetterman could have never been elected. There's a feather in his cap.
So...you're intentionally conflating a regulation about what something must be in order to meet the definition of "mayonnaise," with a campaign slogan that doesn't hide that Miller High Life is literally a beer, in an artful manner. No, these things are not equally silly.
Definitions are oppressive and just social constructs so they can be anything I demand they be. /proggie
It's truly sad that I cannot even call that idiocy sarcasm because it is too often true.
I don't think progressives, or Belgians, do sarcasm, so it must be stupid.
Most Belgians I've met are quite reasonable people, who do actually come equipped with a sense of humor. Belgian bureaucrats have their sense of humor surgically removed when they're hired, but that's true of bureaucrats everywhere. Handing excessive power to unelected, unaccountable nitpicking bureaucrats is probably the EU's greatest sin.
Yeah, there is zero danger that anyone will be confused about whether Miller is actually champagne. One can debate the necessity of the US food labeling rules, but it's not the same thing.
If you beleive that, then you don't know Europeans!
It's exactly the same thing. If someone were selling horse meat and calling it beef, that would be a clear case of fraud and it would be perfectly appropriate for the government to shut them down. But no one buying vegan "meat" and "milk" products is being fooled in any way. They know what they're getting, and it's what they want.
I guess you could elevate ENB's comparing to the status of "conflating". The two scenarios are quite comparable since both are examples of government getting involved in trivial food labeling matters they don't need to be involved in.
"I guess you could elevate ENB’s comparing to the status of “conflating”. "
That, or the standard 'false equivalence' that she has mastered.
Really? Please give an example of her "mastery" of false equivalence.
Well, I have several examples of you coming into the Roundup thread everyday and shitting it up with comments after the fact that you think will stand and no one will see.
Cite: The dailies. Pick one
OK, I chose this one at random:
https://reason.com/2023/04/17/no-constitutional-right-to-honk-your-car-horn-court-says/
Shoot!
I question the need for it in this article.
They're exactly the same thing. Nobody thinks Miller is champagne, and nobody thinks vegan mayo is anything other than a purely plant-based mayo substitute. Anybody who finds this confusing is literally too dumb to live, and beef and dairy producers are stupid to fight it. They're trying to shut down "competitors" who aren't actually competing with them. No one buying vegan mayo is going to buy traditional mayo in any case, and it's exactly the same thing for other plant based "burgers" and "milks".
I don't see anything remotely libertarian about demanding that government micro-manage food names. The government should step in only if there's clear and intentional fraud going on, which is obviously not the case here.
"Belgium Destroys Thousands of Miller High Life Cans Over 'Champagne of Beers' Slogan"

Unfortunately both Jerry and Burt have passed on. Is Sally still kicking? Have to come up with a new cast. Trying to think of a current country star who could play Snowman. Very few modern ‘country’ stars recommend themselves. I would say maybe Toby, but he’s battling cancer last I heard. Maybe Trace Adkins or Dwight Yoakan both have acting credentials. Yeah they ain’t modern country stars, and a bit long in the tooth, but this current crop, no one jumps to mind. I’m drawing a bigger blank on the role of Smokey.
And Jackie Gleason...
The problem with re-doing any kind of Smokey and the Bandit movie is the fact that modern Hollywood would turn it into a steaming shit pile. Current Year Smokey and the Bandit would have Ruby Rose playing Bandit with her non-binary pooner sidepiece, Lady Gaga as Snowman, and Peter Sarsgaard playing Smokey as some dangerously sinister character instead of the vaudevillian goofball that Jackie Gleason played him as.
Sally Field, Gidget and the flying nun, is still alive. She would be a tough role to fill too considering the chemistry she had with Burt Reynolds in the movie. Hard to duplicate.
It is too good a movie to update, but my guess is an update would include a more diverse cast. The guy that does the TV DAD commercials could be a legit sheriff. He’s got the girth and comedic swagger. No Gleason, but for this age he will do.
His daughter is the one left at the alter. The Bandit would then have to be a woman and the femme fatale a soy boy white guy who needs to expand himself for the interracial race angle. The trucker, a bruising lesbian with a golden heart, whose only interest is helping her friend get to the end of the goal. She’ll find love in the end as she converts the Sheriff’s daughter to the other side and into her true self. The wager will be a bet with rappers in Vegas.
All inclusive with a happy ending.
Unless they go really dark. Then everyone is miserable in pursuit of the goal and the angst and struggle is the crux of the story.
Now I have a headache...
In a modern Smokey & The Bandit, everybody gets a trophy.

House Republicans have four votes to spare in spending battle.

...the Supreme Court stayed a lower court ruling that would have meant more restrictions on the abortion drug mifepristone.
You're going to make me break down and read about this drug and the justifications for restricting it, aren't you?
To my knowledge, they approved it as an emergency use (what emergency, who knows) a generation ago and never bothered to do the normal process and recent changes made it vulnerable to review/attack.
Don't you know that every pregnancy is an emergency?
And it's very questionable if it could with strand normal scrutiny and especially not without a doctor's appointment for the prescription.
Basically, the same people who write the FDA rules, decided not to follow them and are aghast the court may state they have to follow them.
Oh, shit, I woke up in Bizarro World again. So-called libertarians crying "But it's the ruuuuules!" is beyond irony. The fact that the FDA not only did follow the rules but actually subjected the drug to unusually high levels of scrutiny is just the dross floating on top of the iron.
Your knowledge is incorrect, although I won't pretend to know whether you're ignorant or just dishonest. The drug was approved under subsection H, which does allow for accelerated approval of certain drugs, such as anti-HIV and cancer drugs. However, that's only part one. Mifepristone was approved under part two, which imposed special restrictions on how the drug could be administered and required postmarket surveillance to make sure there were no dangerous effects that slipped past the initial testing. Years of that very surveillance revealed no such dangers, so the FDA appropriately relaxed restrictions.
I suppose you could argue that you're half-right. The drug didn't go through the "normal process", but only in the sense that it met higher scrutiny than most drugs. The only reason it was vulnerable to attack is that anti-abortion extremist loonies have been allowed to take over the asylum.
There are no justifications. It’s just one more case of anti-abortion extremists tipping their hand. The drug has been on the market for two decades (three, outside the US), and there’s zero evidence it poses any unusual danger, except to the Cult of the Holy Fetus and their ability to control women.

U.S. natural gas production is booming.
.
The country is pumping so much of the commodity that prices have dropped to multi-year lows after last year, soaring to over $7 per mmBtu amid the European energy crunch. Now, U.S. benchmark gas is trading around $2 per mmBtu and likely to remain at this level for the observable future. Because of associated gas. Just four shale basins in the United States are currently producing some 36 billion cubic feet of associated gas daily. Those are the Permian, the Eagle Ford, the Niobrara, and the Bakken. And the reason they are producing so much is that oil production is also on the rise. Because of higher prices.

So, you're a Democrat in all but name. Fits well with the CP crappola.
You don't even get those because Democrats continue to nominate Drug Warriors and Gun Warriors to the various benches.
But at least abortion would be safe if you got your way.
The real drug warriors and cop fellators are your fellow conservatives.
Fatass Donnie wants to execute drug dealers, idiot.
I have to disagree. The combination of a GOP Congress and a Dem President has historically produced the lowest increases in spending.

Finally, a trial balloon we can all have fun watching.
doesn't that make Newsom a fascist or something or at lest thats what the left said of Trump anytime he wanted to send in the NG
Our editor acknowledged this on Twitter today. Not here, but she still called out the Trump double standard on Twitter.

Will Belgium also destroy cans of Bud Light, since it falsely claims to be beer endorsed by a woman?
Falsely claims to be beer
"But the U.S. isn't immune from this sort of silliness. For instance, we have official rules about the word mayonnaise: It must contain eggs, vinegar or lemon juice, and at least 65 percent vegetable oil."
Really? You find it silly that certain foods must contain specific ingredients? Perhaps I am not woke enough to accept that modern words can mean anything, and contents are not important. Like "women" without a vagina.
And it's not like you can't make mayonnaise-like products that are called something else. Miracle Whip has been around for like 80 years.
But does eating sandwiches with Miracle Whip induce actual miracles?
-or-
Think of how miraculous it would be for ENB to make sandwiches with Miracle Whip.
If only there were a sandwich expert on senior staff here…
I mean, that is what mayo is. So you can't just whip up some butter and call it mayo. I don't mind that. Maybe they should have more leeway to slightly alter one ingredient, i.e. make it with lime instead of lemon, but it's OK to have standards.
I think that it's a worse offense that things like pasta are required to be fortified by iron in the US, which disqualifies a lot of overseas (and especially Italian) brands because fortifying pasta dough with iron is not part of the traditional pasta-making process.
Yes, I find most such restrictions silly, or occasionally downright evil. Unless there's clear fraud going on, the government shouldn't be meddling. In the case of vegan mayo, there's no fraud. It's clearly labelled as what it is, and the people buying it are getting exactly what they want.
New Mexico still charging 'Rust' armorer in death of Halyna Hutchins after dropping charges against man who pulled the trigger, Alec Baldwin
Good old New Mexico. The bluest state with the highest inequality, covid death rate, and general dysfunction.
Bluest meth, too
It never made legal or moral sense to charge Baldwin. The article's stated reason for charging Guttierez doesn't make sense either. Stepping out of the room didn't contribute to the death.
Given that Baldwin was producer on the show, responsible for the safety of the set, and that he had repeatedly been warned that his Armorer was inadequate for the job of ensuring that safety, I can see a pretty strong case that he is morally culpable.
Not when you look at his actual producership. It was a figurehead title.
What do you mean "figurehead"? It is produced by HIS production company, El Dorado Pictures.
Do you have some sort of evidence to the contrary?
Never mind the armorer. If Baldwin had followed the most basic rules of gun safety, this never would have happened.
He pointed a gun at someone, pulled the hammer back, and pulled the trigger. He bears some level of responsibility.
First rule of gun safety is always treat a gun as if it was loaded and never point at anything you aren't prepared to shoot.
Don't forget, finger off the trigger until sights are on target. Baldwin ignored at least three of the four basic rules of gun safety.
And he did that knowing that there had already been two or three negligent discharges on the set. Everyone present _knew_ they were operating unsafely, and chose to continue. But he bears the highest responsibility since he pointed a gun at the camera and pulled the trigger, when he could see two people behind the camera - and given the previous incidents, he knew there was a possibility the gun was loaded with a live round. He was also the one person who could have halted the production by refusing to do his job (as an actor rather than as a producer) until the safety problems had been fixed, with little damage to his career.
The lowest responsibility: the armorer, who wasn't even allowed on set. Maybe she should have locked all the guns in a safe and run away with the key, but they'd have broken into the safe and hired another armorer, who would not have dared to attempt to enforce safety in the gun handling. Unlike Baldwin, she did not have the reputation and power to halt the production and ever work again in Hollywood.
It made perfectly good sense to criminally charge Baldwin. His careless and irresponsible behavior resulted in someone's death, which is pretty much the definition of involuntary manslaughter. Other factors may have contributed, but if Baldwin had followed the most basic rules of safe gun-handling, this never would have happened.
Well come on, you have to understand! They need Baldwin around for his Trump Impression on SNL.
Is that the same Baldwin, or one of the too many other Baldwins? I have to ask because it's been two or three decades since I watched SNL. Even way back when it was good, either I was working nights and could not watch it at work, or I had to start work at 6 or 7 am and couldn't stay up that late.
Those bastard Republicans will probably vote party-line, except for a handful of them that will bravely break ranks and do the right thing. Unlike those bipartisan Democrats.

Study Shows Mothers of Boys With Gender Issues Are Insane
This pilot study compared mothers of boys with gender identity disorder (GID) with mothers of normal boys to determine whether differences in psychopathology and child-rearing attitudes and practices could be identified.
Results of the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines and the Beck Depression Inventory revealed that mothers of boys with GID had more symptoms of depression and more often met the criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder than the controls.
Fifty-three percent of the mothers of boys with GID compared with only 6% of controls met the diagnosis for Borderline Personality Disorder on the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines or had symptoms of depression on the Beck Depression Inventory.
Results of the Summers and Walsh Symbiosis Scale suggested that mothers of probands had child-rearing attitudes and practices that encouraged symbiosis and discouraged the development of autonomy.
So Munchausen by proxy like we've all suspected.
So, more women have become mentally unstable, and in turn fuck up more male children?
Alternatively, more boys are convinced they have the wrong gender and drive their moms crazy.
Either way, the master plan is working.
So, more women have become mentally unstable, and in turn fuck up more male children?
And many of those male children probably have no fathers or any other positive male role models around to look up to. Combine that with a steady diet of "men suck/ men are pigs/ men are evil (especially white men)" messaging from their mentally unstable mothers and probably a good number of other adults (especially teachers which are also mostly mentally unstable women) and it's really no surprise that a good number end up wanting to chop their dicks off. And the ones that don't probably develop all manner of other mental issues.
“especially teachers which are also mostly mentally unstable women”
Wow, you’ve just got it all figured out. All demographics neatly pigeonholed into nice, tidy categories.
People are individuals. Don't know how someone can be this collectivist in how they perceive people and have any chance of being a libertarian.
You got any citations for that, White Mike, or are you just content to try to get the last word in?
Unlike you, Mike seems to have some actual reading comprehension skills. Oh well, your handle still gets points for truth in advertising.
If you're looking for libertarians in the Reason comments, all I can say is good luck. We used to have some, but the invasive species of right wingnuts has largely displaced and replaced them. They're easily recognized by their incessant lies (To be generous, I suppose it's possible they're just invincibly ignorant as opposed to dishonest.), endless shit-flinging and utter obsession with other people's genitals.
If there is any actual issue to get your panties in a twist, it's the spike in girls presenting as FTM. Since there has been no similar spike in boys presenting as MTF, I'd say your knickers are knotted for no good reason. But, hey any excuse to shriek about trannies is a good one, right?
So, more women have become mentally unstable, and in turn fuck up more male children?
This is honestly why every woman in a blue state should be encouraged and even given state funding to abort any pregnancy they have.
What about the darkies? Asking for Margaret Sanger.
The nice thing about "every woman" is that it's racially inclusive.
#AllBluewomen
Yes
For younger children at least I don't see how it could be anything else. Once they become teens, then they have all their insane teenage friends to fuck them up too.
This pilot study compared mothers of boys with gender identity disorder (GID) with mothers of normal boys
Normal boys?! HOW DARE YOU IMPLY THAT TRANNIE BOYS AREN'T NORMAL!!!!!111!!!11!!!!!! REEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! - 'tards everywhere, probably
Fine, boys of mothers without BPD vs. everyone else’s mom.
The study is from 1991. It was OK to say "normal" back then, but we can retroactively cancel now.
Mike would tend to agree with this, if I recall correctly.
this was ALWAYS obvious to anyone who has ever interacted with a tranny's mom.
Yeah, I'm sure this is entirely reliable and reproducible research. Not to mention relying on the same psycho-babble you usually denounce. But, hey, you like the conclusion, or at least your interpretation of it, so it must be right!

IRS Whistleblower Implicates Merrick Garland
Attorney General Merrick Garland is the unnamed official whose sworn testimony to Congress is being challenged in a bombshell letter from an IRS whistleblower’s attorney alleging a cover-up in the Hunter Biden criminal investigation, The Post has learned.
Too local
ENB is too busy reading about Miller high life
Thank God Garland is not on SCOTUS. Senator McConnell did the country a great service by declining to consider his nomination.
Yeah, the Turtle is almost as useless as a wet turd, but he did the country a solid on holding that line.
Let me get this straight. Miller, which is American, is a lager which is German. But people in Belgium are pissed because the Americans are comparing their German beer to Champagne, which is French. Is that about right?
And then the glaring question: why would Belgium or Germany, probably the two best beer countries, import cheap American lagers?
US military bases.
Because their government doesn't let them drink it? Same reason Eve bit the forbidden fruit.
Also maybe its a Belgen who wants to ruffle the feathers of some snooty French jerk?
It’s an import. Lots of what we import is “cheap shit” in the home country.
Also, nobody else makes it. Anyone can make an IPA. European lagers aren't difficult. What American lagers do is replace some of that barley with corn and/or rice, which doesn't add flavor. That means that much less hops are required or it would be imbalanced. It's the most difficult style of beer to make, because any fuckup sticks out.
10 years ago, or so, I bought a case of Crown XR “Waterloo” edition with my brother. They drink a lot of crown and ginger, and we wanted something special for when we were hunting. When I tasted the first $90 bottle, I remember being very underwhelmed by the whiskey. It was fine, but I didn’t really consider it twice as good as regular Crown. I went online to read a lot of reviews and the same sentiment seemed prevalent- a fine spirit, but nothing crazy.
Flash forward to this weekend when I was cleaning out my liquor closet, and found two unopened bottles (of the 6 I originally owned). I went online to look, and they are now each worth $1800 – $2500.
That is bizarre. The liquor has not changed at all. No one’s tastes have substantially changed. It is just hard to get. But you are spending two grand for a thoroughly mediocre bottle of whiskey.
That's collecting, which has nothing to do with what is being collected.
Yeah but that is my point. Why collect a mediocre whiskey? Just because it is from a distillery that no one cared about 50 years ago? I mean no one cared enough to pay 100 for their "rare" whiskeys back then. That whiskey hasn't changed one bit today.
There are a lot of rare baseball cards out there that are near worthless because they are for bad baseball players. The really valuable ones are for players that were relatively famous. This Crown XR is like paying a bunch of money for a baseball card for...um...well, I don't know much about baseball...so insert some jackoff has been baseball player from the 50s.
Is Shiner Bock more or less like German beers? I'm woefully under-educated when it comes to beer and its creation.
It is like a type of German beer, but Germans have many types.
It’s a dark lager. Beers fall into two major categories which are ale and lager. Lager requires cold temperatures, ready access to mountain caves in Europe, or refrigeration, because they ferment and age at colder than room temperature. Ale on the other hand is happy at room temperature which makes it easy to make. I personally prefer lager.
Thanks!
Bock is a type of german lager, but my understanding is that Shiner (while really good for a large production beer) is not actually a Bock style, but mimics it using ingredients that were readily available back when Spoetzel started brewing it. I tried brewing a copycat back in the day, and the big part of the grain bill was malt-forward, dark roast barley.
Czech pilsners like Urquell are all barley, and have a hop bite. Harp is nice, but being all barley it is also hoppy. American lager has less flavor, less hops, but the same fizz and alcohol.
"but being all barley it is also hoppy"
I find that the all-barley beers are more malty than hoppy (not that some don't have a greater hops profile).
For example, Fat Tire and Sam Adams are both 100% barley, and they aren't very hoppy at all. Sierra Nevada- the other big craft brew has a much more hoppy flavor. Guinness Stout is also 100% barley, but has pretty much no hops flavor at all- while having an incredible maltiness from the dark roasted barley it uses.
*groan*
There's a lot of factors in the balancing act of making beer. For example hops added at the beginning of the boil add bitterness but the flavor boils out, while hops added at the end of the boil add flavor but lack the time needed to add bitterness.
Substituting rice or corn means less maltiness and less barley flavor (yes, barley has flavor) to be offset. That means less hops.
So excuse me for getting the wording wrong, and also for whatever nits you'll pick out of this comment.
"So excuse me for getting the wording wrong"
Jesus christ, man. I was just saying what *I* found to be the case with all barley beers I've tried, and you get all bitchy about it. If you got the wording wrong (like you meant malt/barley when you said hoppy), then fine, we are in even greater agreement.
Even if you don't taste hops there's still hops. It's the bitterness that balances out the malt.
I know that, Sarc. All I was noting is the *in my experience* 100% barley beers are distinguished more by their malt characteristics than their hop profile. Because *in my experience* brewers play with hops as its own variable, (there are hoppy rice/corn ales/lagers) but it is difficult to hide the malt flavor of beer with a 100% malted barley grain bill.
It is not my interest to get into a beer trivia dick measuring contest.
Then there’s the temperature of the mash which determines the ratio of fermentable and unfermentable sugars, and the resulting body of the beer. I could go on. I got good enough at brewing to consider changing careers until I saw what they make. It’s a pittance. Not even $50K. Who can live on that?
I think what he's saying is that the less malty beers require less hops for a balanced flavor.
And then the glaring question: why would Belgium or Germany, probably the two best beer countries, import cheap American lagers?
Germany for sure, personally I'd rank the UK and Czech over Belgium though.
I dunno man...I'd put several abbey ales above UK beers. Of course, the beautiful thing about beer is that we don't have to choose. We can have them all. Every damn day.
A lot of UK beers buy fresh hops and let them go stale before using them, because that's how they duplicate the original flavor.
Actually, under German law, Miller isn't even beer. Also, Miller is a pilsner (Granted, that's a sub-type of lager.), which originated not in Germany but in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. I doubt your average Belgian gives two shits, but Belgian bureaucrats have to dance to the EU drum.
'California Gov. Gavin Newsom is sending the National Guard to "address public safety concerns, especially the fentanyl crisis," he announced on Friday.'

Under the new sustainability regime, the ultra-rich profit, but the rest of us not so much. The most egregious example may be the forced take-up of electric vehicles (EVs), which has already helped to make Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, the world’s second-richest man. Although improvements are being made to low-emissions vehicles, consumers are essentially being frogmarched into adopting a technology that has clear technical problems, remains far more expensive than the internal-combustion engine and depends primarily on an electric grid already on the brink of blackouts. Green activists, it turns out, do not expect EVs to replace the cars of hoi polloi. No, ordinary people will be dragooned to use public transport, or to walk or bike to get around.
Nobody needs 23 miles* of transportation.
*23 miles is more than enough for people to fulfill their roles as subservient proles living and working in metro-fringe public housing projects.
"15 minute cities."
You know, I always figured we'd end up in Terminator or Blade Runner dystopia, but it turns out we're going to end up in Hunger Games or Brave New World dystopia.
Yay.

Can we wish for Planet of the Apes?
Damn you all to hell!
Designation of origin protections are common in Europe, and have been granted to everything from cheese to wine to tomatoes.
Americans often give this scheme a little eyeroll. The snobbery! The pretentiousness! The protectionism!
But the U.S. isn’t immune from this sort of silliness. For instance, we have official rules about the word mayonnaise: It must contain eggs, vinegar or lemon juice, and at least 65 percent vegetable oil.
Again with this hobbyhorse. That’s not about origin. If the US rule said it had to come from Mahon, that would be similar silliness. But this is about composition. Do you not see the difference? And do you not see how consumers who don’t care about origin would care about composition?
Americans often give this scheme a little eyeroll. The snobbery! The pretentiousness! The protectionism!
Bourbon *cough* *cough*
Much better example. Although the rules are much looser than Euro DOC stuff.
Right. Other than requiring that it be made SOMEWHERE in the US, the requirements of Bourbon are solely about the method of manufacture (charred new oak barrels, 51% corn mash, etc). While I dislike government regulation of all types, there is a difference between rules that intend to standardize a term to reduce confusion, versus rules that attempt to enforce a bunch of barriers to entry.
My preference would actually be to render this to private trade associations, using trademarks, but this is not substantially different, and it comes with its own problems.
For example, the American Brewer's Association has trademarked the term Craft Brew, defining what is and is not craft brew. Interestingly, this is a far more "protect the entrenched players" type of system than bourbon. ABA has repeatedly changed its definitions to allow major craft breweries like Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada to keep their designation, while disqualifying smaller companies that (for example) get investments from larger breweries. And when New Belgium was acquired by Kirin, I believe the definition was adjusted once again to distinguish between craft brewers and craft beers.
Pretty sure you can't apply the word "bourbon" to spirits made in North Dakota.
I thought there was a geographical limitation too, but apparently it just has to be US made, at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels.
Learn something new every day.
I only learned this over the last year as I have been investigating buying a bourbon barrel.
You wouldn’t want to drink it from anywhere else.
Central KY and Middle TN are huge limestone formations. The water here is super hard (kidney stone capital).
But unlike other places where the water is super saturated with calcium, our water has almost no icky sulfur and tastes great (cough Florida cough).
So there is a geological reason for getting Bourbon from KY and TN Whiskey from TN, not just the ready availability of the barrel material and the corn
Meh, that is what they always said about Beer and Colorado- the PH was perfect for beer, which is why there is such a huge home- and craft-brew movement there.
But these days that doesn't matter. You can get your water from wherever you want, and put it through whatever chemical process you desire. California has terrible water, and yet there are several very good breweries here- because they pay to treat it first.
It may have started with the water, but Colorado's real secret is the brewing culture. There is a vibrant community of people who test and support each other and innovate constantly. In Colorado, my kids spent many weekends helping their grandfather and I brew beer. They know the techniques. They know how one mash's flavor will result in different beer tastes. I suspect a similar phenomenon has much more to do with Kentucky's success than its water.
Yellowstone, distilled in Montana is a damn good, mid range prices bourbon. Stacks up nicely against Maker's Mark and Bullit.
For rye, despite not being a huge fan of Canadian whisky, I think Pendleton's 1910 is my favorite. But I've come to believe that Canadian Whisky is either really good (Pendleton) or absolutely cough syrup (Cough cough, Crown). There is no middle range.
North Dakota Bourbon

And one from your home state
https://store.forwhiskeylovers.com/products/wiggly-bridge-small-barrel-bourbon-750ml
Yeah I remember as a kid being told that Bourbon had to be produced in Kentucky, but that has never been the law. Could this be the Mandella Effect?
There is a Tennessee law (delivered to us by Jack Daniels) that codifies "Tennessee Whiskey" as produced in the state and filtered through maple charcoal. But that isn't recognized anywhere else.
Another fun fact: The US only legislates the definition for Bourbon INSIDE the US. Exported spirits do not have to meet the definition for how it is produced. We do have trade agreements with EU and Canada and they require the Bourbon label be a US produced spirit- but if they don't produce it according to US regulations (new barrels, charred oak, 51% corn mash, etc etc) that doesn't matter.
So if you are in the EU, your Bourbon definitely came from the US, but may not have been fermented in virgin oak barrels. And if you are in India, you could be drinking Bourbon from Siberia.
On the other hand, the USDA isn't taking other things off the shelf for using the word bourbon in the description of a mostly or completely unrelated product.

The byline really doesn't matter....
The closest the US gets to any sort of designation of origin protection is Vidalia onions. Those have to be grown only in specific counties in Georgia to be called "Vidalia".
Some trade groups will either place labels or trade mark certain things, like Real Washington Apples or Walla Walla Sweet Onions, or Idaho Russets. But that is usually done by producer groups and doesn't carry the weight of law.
Although, if you label an Oregonian grown apple as a Real Washington Apple you might get in trouble for false advertising. Walla Walla Sweets on the other hand applies to any sweet onion grown on the Columbia Basin, thus it could come from either Washington or Oregon.
And a lot of 'Idaho' Russets are grown in Washington.

Imagine sitting down at your computer and writing a letter comparing the persecution of Jews to the daft piss-taking faced by ginger people. Imagine breezily pooh-poohing the idea that Jewish people experience ‘racism’, and actually putting the word ‘racism’ in scare quotes like that, to really drive home the unhinged idea that racial animus against Jews is a myth. Imagine implying that in the mid-20th century, blacks had it hard – in the US, in South Africa – but Jews had it relatively okay. The victims of the Holocaust would beg to differ. If they could. If they hadn’t been exterminated in their millions in the most sinister and deranged racist crime in human history. Yes, racist – no scare quotes.
Abbott’s insistence that white people, including Jews, do not experience ‘racism’ brings to mind Whoopi Goldberg’s comments about the Holocaust last year. The Holocaust was ‘not about race’, said Goldberg. The Holocaust was ‘two white groups of people’, she said. So how can it be racist? Racism is something only blacks experience.
Yeah, but what about the Irish?
"We'll give some land to the niggers and the chinks..."
Diane Abbott has always been like that. And a loyal supporter of that anti-Semitic cunt Corbyn (and they briefly had a relationship years ago).

See also the Saami people. I’m an 1/16th or so Saami, but you would look at me and think I’m 100% Norse-Germanic. But until the 1970s, if I lived in Norway, I would have been treated as Saami.
My great grandma was about half Saami (both her parents were mixed Sami and Norse).
Also, interestingly enough, when my mother did her genetic profile, she found out her grandma was a quarter German Jew. Thank God they left Germany in 1850.

I'll make the same prediction about Trump. He's so constantly aggravated these days he's likely to stroke out.
These days, that's not as big a barrier as one might think.

Is this the part where you pretend a senile kiddie toucher who campaigned from his basement reversed a 150 year old trend and drove the biggest vote total increase in American history, getting 20% more votes than even Obama?
Yup, not even the Roosevelts, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton or Obama could do that. Nobody but Joe fucking Biden.
What a miracle.
To be fair, didn't Trump get the second biggest vote total increase in history?
What did Biden not lie about?
Trump is not a senile cadaver.
Nothing like ENB totally misrepresenting the findings of a poll to lie about and demonize Trump yet again.
Any candidate for President who receives 40% support from likely voters in a nationwide poll has widespread support and is in terrific shape to win the primaries, and the general election (as Biden only has 30% support nationwide).
,
And while Trump enjoys 40% nationwide support, I suspect <25% of voters nationwide would support Harris, Newsome, Mayor Pete, Kennedy or any other Democrat for President.
And in sharp contrast to Biden's mumbling, stumbling, bumbling incoherence and incompetence, Trump is still looking and sounding very smart, and is an exponentially superior leader.
The polling bump DeSantis was/is hoping for (by banning most abortions) from theocrats in the GOP isn't going to gain him enough votes in the primaries to defeat Trump.
And DeSantis' signing of the 6 week abortion ban makes him unelectable for President in 2024 (and likely thereafter), and Trump's opposition to nationwide abortion bans (and his support for exceptions for rape, incest and the woman's health) will convince swing voters (including many suburban women) to vote for Trump next year.

Any candidate for President who receives 40% support from likely voters in a nationwide poll has widespread support and is in terrific shape to win the primaries, and the general election (as Biden only has 30% support nationwide).
It would nice if maybe she had, I don't know, included some historical data from similar points in previous election cycles so as to compare the levels of support for the incumbent vs the front runner from the other party. IOW, how likely is it, historically, for an incumbent with only 30% support at this point to win re-election? Also, is 40% support for the front-running challenger really good or bad? Without context those numbers are meaningless.
Or maybe just note how wrong all polls have been in the last two presidential contests.
The problem with Trump's 40% is that it is both his base and his ceiling. It has been that way for years. There is little to suggest he will do anything to raise the percentage. Biden on the other hand will get a bump from being the Trump alternative and he will work to increase his number. People want a different candidates, but that is unlikely to happen and once the election is set the people will chose. I expect a bigger Biden victory in 2024 than in 2020.
They're doing the world a favor by destroying that swill.
It is clearly a metaphor meant to denote the (alleged) high quality of Miller High Life beer, not to mislead consumers into thinking that the beer is literally champagne.
I disagree. It is clearly a metaphor meant to denote that the city of Champagne is less filling than the next leading sparkling-wine-producing Belgian city.

Appealing to the Colorado Supreme Court.
https://www.thecentersquare.com/colorado/article_855d2d7e-e083-11ed-8c4b-9fb6fc57b93b.html
Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips appealed to the Colorado Supreme Court to overturn a lower court’s ruling that he violated anti-discrimination laws by refusing to create a cake celebrating a gender transition.
After the phone conversation where Phillips declined to make the gender-transition cake for Scardina, the attorney called a second time requesting another custom cake depicting Satan smoking marijuana, according to legal documents. Phillips declined both requests because the cakes expressed messages that violate his core beliefs.
“Phillips has been in court over a decade defending his right – and the right of all Americans - to create freely,” the petition states. “And he’s faced hostility at nearly every turn. That must stop. People of faith - like anyone else - should be ‘fully welcome in Colorado’s business community.’ They should not be forced to choose between their faith and their art. Protecting Phillips here will keep Colorado diverse and free for all.”
Freedom is racist.
Protecting Phillips here will keep Colorado diverse and free for all.
Wrong kind of diversity, only skin color matters. When it comes to diversity of thought, belief, and opinion you will OBEY or else.
the people who scream the loudest for diversity are the ones who cannot abide any variance.
Scardina's a litigious asshole troon who will never be a woman no matter how hard he tries. People like him don't stop unless they're made to stop, or else.
Why does it have to be a religious objection? Would an atheist objecting to baking the cake not be equally deserving of protection?
Twitter Blue Check Loss Causes Tantrums In Celebrity “Elites”
This Blue Check business reminds me of Dr. Seuss's Star-Bellied Sneetches.
Sneetches with stars on their bellies portray themselves as superior to those without.
An entrepreneur named Sylvester McMonkey McBean appears and offers the Sneetches without stars the chance to get them with his Star-On machine, for three dollars.
The treatment is wildly popular, but this upsets the original Star-Bellied Sneetches, as they are in danger of losing their special status.
McBean then tells them about his Star-Off machine, costing ten dollars, and the Sneetches who originally had stars happily pay the money to have them removed in order to remain special.
Sean Ono Lennon said the exact same thing on Twitter earlier.
https://twitter.com/seanonolennon/status/1650195327641681922
Something really hilarious is happening where like some people actually feel so triggered by the blue check situation it’s becoming this year’s ‘wear a mask.’ Like it’s actually becoming political. We live in the dumbest of times.
Does this remind y’all of anything?:
“Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches Had bellies with stars.
The Plain-Belly Sneetches Had none upon thars.”

Hey Pluggo. Serious question.
Out of all the protesters on the hill on January 6, Ray Epps is the only one caught on many cameras, repeatedly urging people to invade the capitol, and cause violence. He's filmed doing it over and over again. And he's the only one.
We now seen protesters locked up indefinitely without charges, or given five years for parading. We saw the "QAnon Shaman" get locked up for quietly following officers as they gave him a tour.
But Ray Epps, whose caught on camera being everything that the others were accused of, isn't charged. And he's defended as an innocent and a victim by the same Democrats who want to lock everyone else up for exactly what he did.
Why do you think that is?
I am not going to engage in CT because I can't fully explain everything in a complex event.
Like Building Seven fell on 9/11 without being hit by terrorists. I won't go CT there either. Hot debris caused Bdg 7 to fall? Or did Cheney plan it?
No CT for me.
In other words, you're a chickenshit.
As for Building 7, that building was substantially damaged by debris falling from the North Tower when the latter collapsed (actually pancaked) from its own structural weakness due to the intense jet fuel fire. This debris ignited multiple fires within WTC 7, causing the beams to weaken.

Attempts to force Thomas out.
https://www.thecentersquare.com/opinion/article_8a5c2e00-dfb7-11ed-bf05-6f5ac1e4e7a8.html
In writing the Constitution, our founders wanted to balance competing ideals. Alexander Hamilton desired a strong executive branch and James Madison wanted a dominant legislature. They spent months formulating a devised balance of power so no one could "hijack" the people's government.
One civics lesson Americans have learned over the past two years is "even the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." A progressive trifecta is an undemocratic way to turn a republic into a socialist dominion. Progressives will do anything to gain absolute power within the government.
"Most people don't know what is best for them until government does it for them.” – Nancy Pelosi
Since Thomas has an impeccable record on the bench, Biden knows the left has no legal premise to remove him. So Biden's henchmen are doing his dirty work for him. Their strategy is to make life miserable for Thomas' wife Virginia to force him to retire. There is no question that this is the most unorthodox self motivated political power grab ever used by a U.S. president in history.
Clarence Thomas was never criticized while he was a secretary of education for the Office for Civil Rights. Thomas first came under fire from the left in 1984 when he chaired the EEOC. Thomas told Black leaders, "Instead of working against Ronald Reagan you need to work with him on teenage pregnancy, unemployment and illiteracy." The left has been attacking Thomas' character since.
Thomas has had a target on his back most of his life, and he is a survivor. He once said, "If I was liberal and blamed White America for the problems Blacks have, I'd be a hero!" Justice Thomas conquered discrimination with education. When Thurgood Marshall stepped down, he stepped up. He is not someone who will roll over and take abuse from the left so Biden can replace him with a Black progressive. Biden has picked a fight with the wrong man and family.
If there's anything Democrats can't stand it's an uppity Negro.

Just 35% of likely U.S. voters said they do not think it's likely cheating affected some races in the most recent midterms, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released Thursday.
Of the 60% of respondents who said it is likely cheating affected the outcomes of some of the races, 37% said it is "Very Likely."
When broken down by party, 48% of Democrats think cheating likely impacted some outcomes in 2022 compared to 78% of Republicans.
Most voters – 62% – also think that the government is likely "ignoring evidence of widespread election fraud," the poll also found.
JesseAZ, isn't it all now down to: Team R needs to 'up their game' on legal ballot harvesting, and amp up their early voting efforts. We know they cheat.

What a corrupt web woven.
https://nypost.com/2023/04/22/bidens-corrupt-web-unraveling-before-our-eyes/
It is said that history turns on small hinges, with the poem “For Want of a Nail” the classic example.
Another example is unfolding before our eyes.
The sudden flurry of evidence and allegations about the Biden family’s money-making schemes is a direct result of the GOP winning control of the House of Representatives last year.
There are also claims from an IRS whistleblower that federal law enforcement agencies are giving favored treatment to President Biden’s son in a long-running probe and that Attorney General Merrick Garland lied to Congress about the case.
Meanwhile, two Ohio Republicans, Rep. Jim Jordan, head of the Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Mike Turner, head of Intelligence, revealed a former deputy CIA director testified that Tony Blinken, then a Joe Biden campaign adviser and now secretary of state, helped provoke the infamous 2020 letter signed by 51 former intelligence officials.
The witness, Mike Morell, said he helped organize the letter after Blinken called him about The Post’s initial laptop stories and later sent the letter to Blinken because he wanted Biden to win.
So a Deep State not only exists, it meddled in and tilted a presidential election.
Part of that sinister force involved the many FBI former agents working at Facebook, Twitter and other tech firms, where they helped government officials censor the laptop stories and others that would have damaged Biden.
The developments are so significant that even the media outlets that usually run a protection racket for Democrats have been forced to start doing their jobs.
It was time that HUNTER BIDENS PENIS reared its head in the GOP again.
I heard Hunter cheated on his taxes. That bastard!

Republican primary voters were asked whether, "given the investigations into Donald Trump," it was "important to nominate a candidate who will not be distracted" or to "support him now to stop his opponents." A full 68 percent said to support him now, while just 26 percent chose the other option.

https://nypost.com/2023/04/23/hunter-biden-may-be-living-at-the-white-house-to-evade-legal-papers-from-his-baby-mama/
Hunter Biden is believed to be hiding out at the White House while his baby mama goes on the warpath.
Lawyers for former stripper Lunden Roberts asked an Arkansas court Friday to jail the first son for failing to fork over his financial records as required in her lawsuit over support payments for their 4-year-old unacknowledged daughter, Navy.
Things were brought to a head last week when a career IRS criminal supervisory special agent who has been investigating Hunter for three years came forward with claims that federal prosecutors are preventing tax charges from being brought against the president’s son.
“There’s no rhyme or reason why Hunter Biden shouldn’t have been indicted years ago … but one of the challenges [for the DOJ is] what do you do with this many family members of the president? There’s not going to be anybody left for a Christmas picture if the DOJ did their job and went and indicted anyone who has any type of fingerprints involved in this influence-peddling scheme,” Comer noted. “I mean, it’s the entire family.”
You know things are going great when we have a crackhead dodging his stripper baby momma in the White House. Glad to have the adults back in charge.
Does this make Hunter a pussy-grabber or a rapist?
Yes.

https://johnkassnews.com/have-chicago-voters-said-they-deserve-to-get-it-good-and-hard/
“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.”
That observation comes from the great 20th century journalist, satirist, and iconoclast H.L. Mencken.
Who would have guessed that Mencken’s warning would come true for Chicago so soon?
Less than two weeks after Chicago voters endorsed the hard-left mayoral candidacy of Brandon Johnson, throngs of riotous youths with mayhem and anarchy in their hearts invaded downtown Chicago, bringing fear, gunfire wounding two, a car fire-bombed, assault, looting and a vivid picture of a town suffering the logical repercussions of soft-on-crime progressivism.
Soon-to-be mayor Johnson mouthed platitudes condemning “destructive activity,” but he soon revealed his true feelings — “it is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities.”
You’re worried about their feelings Mr. Johnson?

I criticize black America because shitlibs like yourself use them as a source of free votes, while pushing policies that harm freedom and as a result harm black America (see: everything COVID as a recent example, school choice also) while simultaneously pandering to them for their votes (unfortunately, successfully) by telling them everything wrong in their lives is because of white supremacy. I realize that voting blue no matter who, pushing left wing politics, and living in deep blue cities while living lives that are statistically likely to result in poor outcomes (fathers committing crime, fatherless homes, emphasis on 'the community' rather than the nuclear family; de-emphasizing meritocracy) are what is causing them to remain in their position.
You criticize black America because you are a racist collectivist shitlib who actually understands black America's problems are due in large part to black culture and the nature of having on average a lower socioeconomic status, but feel that since you have adequately pandered to them and told them how they should vote, those uppity N******s shouldn't dare second guess you, and if they dare have an independent thought they are slack jawed, uneducated, easily duped, "yes massa!" uncle toms who aren't worth your time.
We are not the same.
ITL, it seems to me we should start the discussion with: What destroyed the black nuclear family, and how can we reduce the epidemic of fatherlessness in black homes?
To me, it all starts (and ends) right there.
The short answer: democrats.
1. LBJ's Great Society. By giving welfare payment to women who have children without fathers in the home, this encouraged poor people, mostly black, to have out-of-wedlock children to maximize the payout. Prior to the Great Society programs, blacks had in wedlock rates of childbirth on par with whites, regardless of income.
2. We need to encourage the two-parent family again. I'm not entirely sure how quite yet.
stop paying single moms to have babies. it's really quite simple.
In 1995/6, the Republican-run House did that by limiting the number of kids that one could claim for welfare. By that time, 30 years after the start of the Great Society, it was too late to stop the cultural shift the Great Society programs caused. The contagion has also spread to middle-class households, whereby more of them are single-parent households (especially single mother) than ever before.
"No one is excited about a 2024 rematch between Biden and Trump"
Dunno. Might be interesting to see how an election turns out without government agents strong-arming media to suppress information regarding Biden's corruption.

News Blackout in Effect.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/taibbi-news-blackout-effect
Authored by Matt Taibbi via Racket News,
An all-time media blackout is in effect. We’re experiencing real-time Sovietization.
By any marker, this is an enormous news story. If we go by the usual measuring stick of American scandal, the Watergate story, this potentially meets or exceeds that, on almost every level. Does it reach into the current White House? Check. Was it a craven attempt to subvert the electoral process? Check again. Did a presidential candidate engineer a massive public deception? Yes, resoundingly. Did it involve intelligence agencies? Yes, and these weren’t amateurs like Nixon’s plumbers. These were 50 of the most powerful people in the intelligence world — including five former heads or acting heads of the Agency in Morell, John Brennan, Leon Panetta, Michael Hayden, and John McLaughlin — conspiring to meddle in domestic politics on a grand scale.
Temporarily, however, that may be obscured by the absolute corruption of American media. Outside of conservative outlets, who naturally are eating it up, there were exactly two serious stories done about this on the national level in an appropriate response time.
Well, maybe the rematch *will* be corrupted by government agents again...
That's almost a 100% certainty.
And just in time to help Democrats throw Joe under the bus, apparently blinded with glee at the prospect of taking their turn at playing “what goes around, comes around!” Republicans are providing all the ammo the Democrats need to dump Biden in time for the next Presidential election. A cynical person might see the RNC funding a “Keep Joe in the White House PAC” since, by 2024, he will probably no longer be able to read the teleprompters and almost anyone could defeat him. But perhaps the GOP is enjoying their turn at bat too much to see that.
However, the DNC seems to want to protect Biden from RFK, Jr.
https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/robert-spencer/2023/04/21/just-when-dem-debates-would-have-been-interesting-dnc-says-there-will-be-no-debates-n1689234
Well, this is disappointing news. The Washington Post reported Thursday that “the national Democratic Party has said it will support Biden’s reelection, and it has no plans to sponsor primary debates.”
Biden has two challengers, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson. When Kennedy announced his candidacy on Wednesday, USA Today reported that RFK immediately had the “support of 14% of voters who backed President Joe Biden in 2020,” according to a USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll. Williamson had 5%, and another 13% were undecided.
They want to prevent any possibilities that Joe might get bounced out before November 2024.
I firmly planted my flag in the "he will never serve out his term" sand before he was even inaugurated. I didn't realize how utterly toxic Kamala was going to turn out to appear. Still, I can't imagine them running this guy again. Even though the propaganda machine is controlling almost everything, his negatives are still extremely high.
They should have gone with Tulsi.
They'd have never gone with Tulsi. She would've opposed the Ukraine War from within and opposed far too many of the establishment positions and decisions to be tolerated.
Yeah, this story is YUGE and it's very hard to find outside of dissident circles and news media.
If we go by the usual measuring stick of American scandal, the Watergate story, this potentially meets or exceeds that, on almost every level.
As I pointed out before, not potentially meets, clearly exceeds Watergate by nearly unimaginable orders of magnitude.

But people should be asking themselves, "Why was Biden a protected species until recently for Democrats and, all of a sudden, now the media have unleashed a flood of negative stories, commentary and facts about the President that would have been unthinkable last year?" What has changed? Could it be that a Joe Biden, deteriorating mentally even at the time, was a useful puppet for defeating Trump, but now he's becoming an increasing liability for the next Presidential election? I think Republicans should be investing heavily in a "Keep Biden for America" political action group, not joining in with the "Dump Biden" chorus! But now that the mainstream legacy media have received their marching orders we can expect a never-ending stream of information aiming to throw Biden and his family business under the bus for the good of "Our Democracy (TM)"
was a useful puppet for defeating Trump
Very useful, effective, and we are thankful. Now he needs to retire.
turd, the ass-clown of the commentariat, lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
"No doubt America – and the world – would be better off without Trump and Biden"
One of those is not like the other. Name a better POTUS than Trump in the last century.
Or, STFU.
Heh. Probably the world would have been better off without ALL of the Presidents in the last century. The trade war with China and the failed but expensive border wall with Mexico would have alone been enough to put him in the lower 50th Percentile, but failing to do anything useful for frustrated rust-belt conservatives makes him a bloviating embarrassment whose legacy will be limited to comedy skits on Saturday Night Live.
That's some professional-level cherry picking of a couple of bad decisions:
1) DeVos
2) Gorsuch
3) Kavanaugh
4) Ajit Pai, end net price fixing
5) Major reduction in the growth of regulations.
6) Dow +35%
7) Unemployment at 3.0% (!)
8) The US Manufacturing Index soared to a 33 year high
9) Got repeal of the national medical insurance mandate.
10) Withdrawal from Paris climate agreement.
11) Not sure about the tax reform; any "reform" that leaves me subisdizing Musk's customers is not what I hoped for. Let Musk run a company for once. But cutting taxes is good.
12) Pulled support for the $13 billion Hudson Tunnel project.
13) More than 16,000 jobs have been cut from the federal leviathan
14) MIGHT have a deal to de-nuke NK.
15) Killed moonbeam’s choo-choo
16) Supported and signed First Step Act.
And finally:
17) “Right to Try” act
18) Still making lefties steppin and fetchin like their pants is on fire and their asses are catchin'
Probably best you STFU.
Calvin Coolidge?
I will say that POTUS Trump was the most libertarian POTUS I ever saw in my lifetime (LBJ to present). Not even close.
Yep. You need to go back a century to find such, but TDS-addled shits will focus on personality; they're looking for a daddy-figure to give them comfort...
Coolage just missed the time cut off
It's not clear to me that the MSM has gotten any marching orders. Aside from reporting on Biden's lack of popularity they continue to censor the DNC and Biden family corruption. It appears that the Republicans have bona fide evidence of criminality in the family and the DOJ. If true they would be shirking their duty if they don't start impeachment proceedings.
"More Americans believe in global warming — but they won't pay much to fix it"
[...]
"Americans increasingly believe climate change is real, that humanity is largely responsible for it and that something needs to be done to fix the problem.
But even as two new surveys confirm the public's growing awareness of global warming, they also indicate that the issue is still not a front-burner concern and that taxpayers don’t want to pay very much to rein in the greenhouse gases that are at the root of the problem..."

"Lip service" and "revealed preferences" are concepts with which NBC is not familiar.
This week the GOP is trying to pass a bill in the House of Representatives that would raise the U.S. debt limit but cut government spending.
this is approximately 0% chance of happening
Conor Friedersdorf on "how the gender debate veered off track."
I can answer this for you in two words: trannies mad.
And 'allies' who coddle the invented reality of said trannies.
Cant have an actual debate with people that either think non-sensical magic things, or that pretend said magic things are real in an effort not to hurt the crazy people's feelings.
Would be like trying to please a schizophrenic dictator. You cant start rational debate from this foundation
A fun conversation stopper is to ask how a similar sized group of delusionals who say the sky is green and the grass is blue would be treated.
Would democrats be passing law after law to affirm their delusions?
• Conor Friedersdorf on “how the gender debate veered off track.”
Let’s outsource this topic to the pages of the Atlantic. They've got a paywall.
As a counterweight to the Friedersdorf article, here’s an extremely well made, and important documentary on the Trans issue as it pertains to Sweden. I strongly recommend it.
Sweden’s U-Turn on Trans Kids: The Trans Train (Part 1): The New Patient Group & Regretters
great to see the pendulum swinging finally on this madness
Sad to see that despite the last several hundred million years or so of biology it's, apparently, a pendulum.
It's not the only thing that swings both ways...
Beer is for fools . There are too many filthy sodomites in Belgium .
What does beer have to do with sodomy? Do you have some esoteric knowledge about beer bottles? 🙂
I have knowledge that beer is for fools and the whole alcohol is for fools . Sodomites are other parasites .
Rum is the drink of sodomites according to Winston Churchill 'The traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy and the lash'
Beer is proof god exists and that he loves us.
Congratulations to the trolls and to the establishment. Notable gadfly Tucker Carlson is out at Fox.
Also, as an update to my Twitter experiment:. This was the first fact I learned from Twitter first.
I am also on the edge of deleting Twitter. Other venues seem better for most of the information I use. And there is zero engagement for the little people. Posting a reply to a thread that eventually garners tens of thousands of views for the initial post will only result in tens of views if you are not already in the network. Reddit seems much better for that sort of engagement.
"Reddit seems much better for that sort of engagement."
If you enjoy far more moderation and other factors that stifle free speech, that's certainly the place to go. Each sub/board is run by their own little tin-pot dictators.
And Don Lemon is out at CNN. That relationship was bound to go sour.
Interesting that the MSN and Google news feed on my phone both promoted these stories and both cited "Carlson and Fox parting ways" or "Lemon and CNN parting ways" to describe the story.
Two news feeds. 4 different stories from 4 different news outlets. All the same headline, saying "parting ways"
It's because both networks have had enough of their partying ways.
This report wants me to believe that somewhere in Germany, a beer enthusiast spent time, effort and money to import Miller High Life from the USA?
Makes the whole story somewhat suspect, right?
An expat living in Germany, maybe?
Must be East German.
The 4th most popular lager in the UK is Coors Lite. Bud is everywhere. So, yes I beleive it.
The question no one seems to have asked is - why are *Belgium* customs involved?
This should have just been loaded into the truck and sent to the German border and let the German customs deal with it.
Anyone else besides me think that this ridiculous news explosion today is at least in part an attempt to try to district everyone from the fact that an IRS whistleblower with the goods is about to blow the lid off the Biden family crime syndicate sky high?
If a Biden fall in the forest will the msm make a noise?
Only if they can blame a Republican.
Fat stinking Belgian bastards!
Heiji Tofu: The Steak of Tofu!
No one is going to confuse it with a porterhouse. They're not.
The steak of Tofu is steak.
"Belgian customs officials have destroyed than 2,000 cans of the beer Miller High Life"
Absolutely no need for such barbarity. It could have easily been shipped back to the states for its one true purpose: to grill brats in Sheboygan.
The fact is that Europeans with tehir "superior" culture and education can't tell chmapagne from beer or piss.
Oh! And what about America!! Wahh, wahhhh!!!!
Cuban?
