During Surprise Trip to Kyiv, Biden Promises Endless Support for Ukraine War

During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Biden vowed to support Ukraine's war effort "for as long as it takes." | Ukrainian Orthodox Church/UPI/Newscom
( Ukrainian Orthodox Church/UPI/Newscom)

President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Kyiv, where he promised Ukrainians interminable support in the war against Russia. The president spent five hours in the Ukrainian capital where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, laid wreaths at a memorial for fallen soldiers, and promised to continue U.S. assistance "for as long as it takes."

"I thought it was critical that there not be any doubt, none whatsoever, about U.S. support for Ukraine in the war," said Biden during his visit, per the Wall Street Journal. While in the country, the president promised an additional $460 million in military aid to Ukraine.

The latest package includes missiles and artillery ammunition, communications equipment, medical supplies, and four Bradley Fighting Vehicles. This latest assistance comes after the U.S. and its NATO allies agreed to start providing Ukraine with hundreds of heavy tanks last month.

The Biden administration has sent $30 billion worth of weapons and equipment to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Congress has approved $113 billion in aid for Ukraine in the past year, with three-fifths dedicated to military assistance.

Despite the mounting price tag, there's little indication that the U.S. government's appetite for supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia is waning. Biden's "for as long as it takes" line certainly suggests his commitment to endless aid.

Some Republican members of Congress criticized Biden for visiting Kyiv before East Palestine, Ohio, where a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed earlier this month, or the Southern border.

Other Republicans, like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R–S.C.), praised Biden's trip. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R–Ky.) has gone out of his way in recent days to emphasize that most Republicans in Congress are still firmly in favor of supporting Ukraine with American tax dollars. "Don't look at Twitter, look at people in power," McConnell told a German audience last week at a security conference.

Nor is there much opposition to increased Ukraine aid coming from liberal electeds. In October last year, 30 members of the House Congressional Progressive Caucus signed a letter that both praised U.S. assistance to Ukraine and called for more diplomacy to end the war. That modest pushback produced intense controversy and the letter was eventually withdrawn.

The American public is more skeptical of continued assistance to Ukraine than their representatives. A recent survey conducted by the Associated Press' polling outfit found that 48 percent of Americans support continued weapons shipments to Ukraine, while 29 percent are opposed. Another 22 percent neither favor nor oppose sending weapons to the country.

That's down from 60 percent support last year. Still, popular agitation against U.S. and Western involvement in the Ukraine war is limited.

This weekend, a rally co-sponsored by the Libertarian Party and the left-wing People's Party in Washington, D.C., demanding an end to U.S. support for Ukraine and the dissolution of NATO drew a crowd of just a few hundred people. At the Munich security conference where McConnell spoke, far-left and far-right demonstrators both showed up to protest NATO, and ended up fighting with each other, reports the Washington Post.

Press coverage of Biden's trip has generally been pretty favorable, with a number of breathless stories recounting how the president was secreted into the country.

Meanwhile, the war itself has ground to a standstill. Fighting persists across a frontline in the Eastern portion of the country, but little territory is changing hands.

That itself is a defeat for Russia, which seemed to start the war with the far-reaching goal of overthrowing the government in Kyiv. In a televised address Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his commitment to fighting the war, which he blamed on Western elites.

"The Russian army has become bogged down in a grinding and dreadfully bloody struggle for very limited amounts of territory in eastern Ukraine," writes the Quincy Institute's Anatol Lieven. "Parallels are being made with the four years of trench warfare on the Western Front during the First World War—a struggle from which all the participants emerged crippled."

Biden's trip underscores the U.S.'s commitment to funding this bloody stalemate.

FREE MINDS

It was a bad day for taxpayer-funded internet blacklists. The largely State Department-funded National Endowment for Democracy (NED) announced that it was cutting off its funding for the Global Disinformation Index (GDI).

The goal of the GDI was to draw up lists of online publications and news sites susceptible to publishing "disinformation" which advertisers could then use to withdraw support from those publications. That list ended up putting a number of perfectly legitimate news sites—including Reason and the New York Post—on its list of 10 "riskiest" purveyors of misinformation.

An investigation by the Washington Examiner first uncovered the NED's funding for the disinformation index. A NED spokesperson confirmed to the Examiner that it would no longer be providing grants to the GDI, citing its requirement that it not involve itself in domestic U.S. politics.

FREE MARKETS

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could decide the future of free speech on the internet. Gonzalez v Google challenges Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act that shields tech companies from liability for hosting third-party speech and moderating content that violates companies' terms of service.

The plaintiffs lost family members in the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. They accuse YouTube (owned by Google) of aiding in these crimes by recommending Islamic State videos to users. The Supreme Court is being asked to decide whether content recommendations based on users' viewing habits should receive Section 230 protections.

Earn over $500 each day and get payouts each week instantly to account for financial institutions. (bwj-03) My remaining month of earnings was $30,390 and all I do is paint for as much as four hours an afternoon on my computer. Easy paintings and constant earnings are exquisite with this job.

IF there was some end game here, then I would strongly support helping Ukraine.

Putin kicked himself in the nuts here. Russia is the foe of NATO. Helping Russia lose makes it very possible for US to eliminate our permanent presence in Europe after this all ends. Force Germany/etc to stop freeloading. And our only remaining function in NATO would be the nuclear umbrella.
Which is ok by me even if it ain't libertarian

      1. Chumby   2 years ago

StayFree, the US can and should leave NATO today. France and Great Britain have their own nuclear weapons as a deterrent against an eastern nation crossing into western Europe.

        1. JFree   2 years ago

400 nukes is not a deterrent v 6000 nukes. Only Russia and the US can deter each other re nukes.

          1. Chumby   2 years ago

400 nukes is a huge deterrent. Seven days to the Rhine is not going to happen.

            1. JFree   2 years ago

Russia wants the Oder-Neisse line. It's why Poland and the Baltics gets this war.

              1. Chumby   2 years ago

Poland and the Baltics are acting like the little kid shouting curses from behind the bigger person. Eastern Europe is not a threat to the US…but getting pulled into a war with a nuclear power in their backyard makes the situation dangerous for Americans. Vietnam began under similar “world police Karen” arguments and turned into s losing nightmare for the US. An expensive one. The transfer of material to the planet’s most corrupt regime is questionable at best (non-Russian aligned Moldova complains about these weapons pouring into her nation). Blowback from bad actors receiving US gifts happens (q.v., Bin Laden). This nation can’t even mount a federal response to a train derailment in Ohio; it has no business going abroad to play warboner.

            2. Vernon Depner   2 years ago

4 nukes is a huge deterrent.

              1. HorseConch   2 years ago

I don't know what world 400 nukes wouldn't completely fuck up, but as usual, JFree makes an excellent point. Putin can have the people of England and France even more dead than the Russians they kill with the first 400.

                1. Chumby   2 years ago

Getting hit with 400 nukes gets glowing reviews in all the wrong ways.

Helping Russia lose makes it very possible for US to eliminate our permanent presence in Europe after this all ends.

It would definitely be possible. It would even be justified. It won't happen though, simply because Europe is so thoroughly neutered now, *especially* Germany, that there's no way they could conceive of not being on our defense tit.

        1. JFree   2 years ago

Probably true. Germany in particular has sprouted all the right talk and followed through with nothing. I wish something different had happened with the Leopard/Abrams stuff. There are afaik 13 US bases still in Germany. We should immediately close 11 of those (x Ramstein and Landstuhl), send all the supplies to Ukraine (incl any Abrams and F's), and then quietly tell Germany those won't be part of Germany's defense any more.

As I said I don't trust what our end game is here. But we most certainly can deal with German freeloading. But not for the cameras and electioneering here in the US.

        2. Benitacanova   2 years ago

Our permanent presence won't be an issue once China gets involved for real. That's the end game here. Get the dumb Americans and their senile lewder to spend half their money and send half their weapons-- all going into a black hole-- and then pounce! China and Russia will divvy up what remains of the western world.

I wouldn't be surprised if that grifter zelensky is in on it. Thanks for the stash fools.

      1. Bill Dalasio   2 years ago

It's a distinction, at this point, without a whole lot of difference. I put it this way. I'm tempermentally, at least, a devotee of geopolitical realism. Now, that puts me at odds with a lot of the principled non-interventionists in libertarian circles. But, at this point, it's counting angels on the head of a pin. Both are so far outside the hyper-interventionist Overton Window defined by the Liberal Internationalists and Neoconservatives that, in terms of policy right now, both arrive at substantively the same positions.

      2. Chumby   2 years ago (edited)

          "voting to invade Afghanistan"

Ehhhhhhhh this is one aspect of Biden's record that's tough to criticize.

"Supported overthrowing the Taliban after 9 / 11" is almost interchangeable with "Worked in the US government on 9 / 11."

          1. Chumby   2 years ago

It is one thing for the man on the street at that time to support invading (or nuke the shit out of those goat herders). Congress, the senate in particular, is tasked with not making knee jerk decisions on behalf of the nation. Just because another bad senator such as Clinton (D) supported it does not give Biden (D) a free pass. I believe we back at sarc’s tu quoque.

I had followed a local radio show host, a Vietnam conflict veteran, who was opposed to such adventurism. There were other arrows in the quiver. It was an expensive, deadly and mostly ineffective mess foreshadowed by British Empire and Soviet Union similar efforts that preceded.

          2. mad.casual   2 years ago

Worth noting that it was well beyond just a Congressional "Thou shalt topple the Taliban, in Afghanistan, and no more." Declaration Of War too. An AUMF that's still running more than 20 yrs. later, well outside Afghanistan.

      3. Unable2Reason   2 years ago

When this started, there was a lot of talk about it being a proxy war that we would use to demonstrate to China what would happen if they invaded Taiwan. LOL

NATO in particular, and the western democracies in general, have depleted all of the war materials that they would need to defend themselves - much less anything to defend Taiwan if China attacked it right now. The Europeans are saying that the Ukrainians are using up ammo faster than it can be produced and that the lead time to replace it is months. A central tenant of Communist ideology is to let your enemies exhaust themselves fighting each other, then attack when they are at their weakest. IOW, we can expect an attack on Taiwan in the very near future, precipitated by the very "demonstration" that was supposed to prevent it.

600 people in one county in California where the people let out on no cash bail were either charged with misdemeanors or were non violent felon offenders. So drug addicts and homeless people continuously arrested for petty thefts, trespassing, retail theft, public intoxication and likely drug possession again. SHOCKING results. If only we had spent more tax money holding them in jail for 30days each until they plead out for time served. Better make nationwide policy based on a few months data in YOLO county, California.

      Simply brilliant.

Well, the cheapest way to provide aid 'for as long as it takes' is to quit stalling and actually provide the aid that will end the war.
Air defense systems, modern jets (along with a bunch of the old air guard A-10s), first line tanks, and lots of logistic support for medical and food deliveries.
(it should not be necessary to add that a lot of this should come from European NATO countries, but it is)

    1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Here's a curious fact regarding the A-10. Exactly zero countries worldwide have tried to purchase them. Unlike virtually every other military aircraft this country has ever produced. While the warthog and it's brrrrt sound are cool and all, the rest of the world uses attack helicopters for that role.

      1. JesseAz   2 years ago

This is a lie. USAF has banned foreign sales of he A10.

        https://www.flightglobal.com/usaf-rules-out-international-a-10-sales/117721.article

Since the warthog is an Army support vehicle the USAF has been trying to kill it since inception.

        https://www.19fortyfive.com/2021/10/why-nothing-even-the-air-force-can-kill-the-a-10-warthog/

More attack copters have failed or been shot down than the warthog has.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

More attack copters have failed or been shot down than the warthog has.

To be fair, shooting down helicopters with shoulder-mounted rockets or Stingers is a lot easier than hitting a CAS jet screaming in at 350 mph.

A-10s are extremely vulnerable to SAM platforms, which is why they weren't used on interdiction missions until after the F-117s and F-15Es cleared them away during Desert Storm.

          1. JesseAz   2 years ago

Attack copters largely are as well. Their standoff range isn't the greatest. Why they usually clear out SAMs before entry of support craft.

Nor is there much opposition to increased Ukraine aid coming from liberal electeds. In October last year, 30 members of the House Congressional Progressive Caucus signed a letter that both praised U.S. assistance to Ukraine and called for more diplomacy to end the war. "California being California is not a fixable problem."

      Absolutely. Real life example:

My wife's oldest friend wished to purchase some land in rural northern CA and have brand new, small modular home placed there. The modular was in a distributor's lot just across the border in Oregon (about 20 miles away), for $60,000. In order to place it on land in CA, and to comply with CA's "required upgrades," including solar, the price jumped to $127,000.

The folly of hate speech laws.

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2023/02/21/the-folly-of-hate-speech-laws/

The West has a free-speech problem. University campuses have been turned into ban-happy ‘safe spaces’. People are regularly cancelled for uttering ‘problematic’ opinions. And the state, too, is looking to police our thoughts. All too often, these new rules, laws and social punishments are justified on the grounds that they are keeping ‘hate’ in check. But is this really a good justification for censorship? Should so-called hate speech ever be banned?

    1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

The satire is sharp and incisive. It perfectly punctures the royal couple’s deluded view of themselves as victims of an intrusive media. As the South Park episode makes clear, with endless real-life examples, the Sussexes are more than happy to reveal the most intimate details of their private lives, and to invade the privacy of their family members, whenever it suits them.

    1. Á àß äẞç ãþÇđ âÞ¢Đæ ǎB€Ðëf ảhf   2 years ago

The UK's royal family sure is a weird bunch. Liz seemed pretty cool, if you're going to have a royal family soaking up tax money; then I read that Obama's security one year cost $1.4B while the royal family only cost $100M and thought, hey, let's swap! Charles has always been a pompous arrogant self-righteous twit, but his two sons seemed alright, actually being decent military pilots. Then Harry started making the news, dating various bimbos as if in search of ... who knows what, while William seemed to be a keeper. Then Harry picked a TV starlet who went all precious princess on the world, they claimed to have resigned from the royal company to live in Hollywood but still wanted UK tax-paid security, insulted the royal enterprise in every way possible and whined when they weren't begged to come back for a day or two, and went on their global privacy tour.

Yeh, Liz was ok. William doesn't seem as pretentious as his alleged father, although he is as dumb on climate change and every other social "ill". Would they still be a good swap, $100M vs $1.4B? Not without Liz.

The funniest part of that episode is that the Harry and Megan caricatures are the prince and princess of Canada, not England and - I might have to re-watch it to make sure - but I don't think they actually refer to them by name at any point during the episode, or if they do they only use their first names and not their full names. Which means they don't have a leg to stand on because technically South Park can just say they were making a show about two strictly fictional characters. Any resemblance to real people is strictly coincidental.

If that makes you feel bad, you may be able to imagine how I feel: I was used by Trump and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani in ways that helped pave the way for Putin to invade Ukraine, my native land. If Trump and Giuliani’s plans had worked, the Ukrainians might not have had the necessary weapons, medical equipment, and other supplies they needed to fight back.
    ......
Trump acted on his hatred of Ukraine as he tried to improve his re-election chances in 2020. The plan that Giuliani and Trump put into operation was simple. Giuliani sent me to collect compromising information that the Eastern European oligarchs had on Hunter Biden’s activities in Ukraine to use against Joe Biden. It was also my job to convince the new Ukrainian government to announce an official investigation into Hunter Biden. If they didn’t, the U.S. would not send Trump or Vice President Mike Pence to Zelensky’s inauguration, threatening Zelensky’s domestic stature and his ability to stand up to Putin. Trump also paused much needed military aid for Ukraine while he tried to get Zelensky to open the Biden investigation.
    ......
In 2021 and 2022, I was convicted of several serious crimes including fraud, making false statements, and illegally funneling foreign money to the Trump campaign. I was sentenced to 20 months in prison, served four, and am on home confinement for the remainder. Now that I am paying my debt to society, I think it is important to tell my side of the story.

So yesterday I posed this question

    https://reason.com/2023/02/20/presidents-day-is-a-good-reminder-to-treat-the-presidency-with-skepticism/?comments=true#comment-9933728

but didn't give it the attention that it was due. Since the Russia-Ukraine war is still in the headlines, it deserves more attention.

The answers to that question I posed - what should a libertarian government do when a nation is clearly the victim of aggression - seemed to me to be the anarchist solution, not the libertarian one. Anarchists of course would not support the government giving weapons to the victim of an aggression in self-defense, because anarchists don't believe in government at all. The victim of aggression has to rely on private donations in order to resist the aggression.

So, why wouldn't this also be the libertarian solution? Well, the reason why libertarians reject pure anarchism is because we recognize that a state of pure anarchy would not result in liberty, it would result in tyranny, of local warlords oppressing the people with no authority big enough to rein in their authoritarian excesses. We are willing to accept the existence of a minimal state, despite its faults - coercive taxation, legal authority to initiate force - because we believe that liberty is the innate birthright of all humankind and *must* be protected if humans are to remain in any state of relative freedom. That is the moral authority for having a state in the first place.

So a libertarian state that refuses to acknowledge and recognize - and defend - the liberty of a people who are the clear victims of aggression, would be undermining its own moral authority to exist in the first place. If a libertarian state isn't going to do the one thing that we ask of it, protect liberty, then what's the point? Might as well go full anarchist.

So all that remains is to discuss what specific form that this aid to Ukraine ought to take. It doesn't necessarily have to be weapons or soldiers. But it should probably be something other than mere lip service, if we want our claims to value liberty to be taken seriously.

    1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Neat how Jeff thinks he can push for war mongering in Ukraine on a libertarian website by framing it as a rhetorical question.

Our fifty-centers think that they're so tricky.

      1. Chumby   2 years ago

He is Reason’s Private Pyles of shit.

    2. Nobartium   2 years ago

That is the moral authority for having a state in the first place.

Only if you reject the idea that governments are chartered toward specific people and places. By your standard, the authority of the government is EVERYWHERE.

      1. Nardz   2 years ago

        Correct, that is his belief.

      2. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

I am describing the moral authority of a libertarian state, not its physical extent of authority.

The only real moral authority of a libertarian government is to protect liberty. If a libertarian government were to then turn around and say "we don't care if your liberty is violated", it undermines its own rationale for existence in the first place.

If a libertarian government is not going to protect liberty, then what's the point?

Once we establish this basic fact about its moral legitimacy, then the question arises about how best to exercise that moral authority. That is a practical question that contains within it a ton of other competing interests, such as sovereignty and cost. It does not inescapably lead to the conclusion of "invade the world". But it does mean that the claim that libertarian foreign policy should be isolationist is bunkum.

        1. Vernon Depner   2 years ago

The only real moral authority of a libertarian government is to protect liberty.

To protect the liberty of THOSE SUBJECT TO IT, not the liberty of the whole fucking universe.

Viewed as the unofficial end of earnings season, Walmart's just reported Q4 earnings also served to send the stock of world's biggest bricks and mortar retailer lower after the company reported strong Q4 results but its profit forecast for this year fell short of analyst estimates, signaling more struggles for the world’s largest retailer after it was hammered by a surge in inventory.

Dollar store mania takes over rural America: Tiny Kentucky town with a population of 1,400 has SIX of the budget retailers… leaving locals with paucity of other options Olive Hill, Kentucky has six chain dollar stores despite its small population Dollar General first opened store there in 1970, and added three more since 2019 Family Dollar also has two locations in the town that opened in recent years Residents are left baffled by the proliferation of dollar stores in their town

"At candidate forums inside a Baptist church not far from the county offices here, they’d talked about their faith."

They talked about their faith IN A CHURCH!? Is that even legal?

"But even Bergman, who at 76 has decades in local politics, wasn’t sure what it would all mean when it came time for a new, far-right majority to actually govern."

So nobody knows and they haven't really done anything, but here's Chemleft and Politico to make shit up and demagogue about them anyway.

"and replaced him with John Gibbs, a former Trump administration official, Christian missionary, failed congressional candidate and election denier who once suggested women should not have the right to vote."

A black Republican so you know Politicos knives are out for him.

Let's look at Gibbs rebuttal. "Gibbs has described his comment as satire, instead pointing to his record of hiring women for his campaign and his mother’s long career at the Michigan Department of Transportation."
So shit deliberately taken out of context by Politico to smear an uppity black man who had the gall to wander off the DNC reservation.

Oh, and Jeffy, is a kid going on a mission trip for a couple of months supposed to be a bad thing?

"They picked for their new public health officer — pending state approval — a safety manager at an HVAC service company who, during the Covid pandemic, suggested ivermectin and neti-pots instead of social distancing and masks."

How is this wrong, Jeff. Even the WHO now says mask were worse than useless. And netipots are recommend for cold viruses, why not other upper respiratory viruses too?

"One of the first things the new, far-right Board of Commissioners did when it took office was change the county motto from “Where You Belong” to “Where Freedom Rings.”

Nothing more far-right than freedom. Jeff and Politico are jokes.

"Bergman said, “It’s becoming more and more evident that these people are Christian nationalists.”

Sounds like Bergman has sour grapes and has become an unhinged anti-Christian bigot looking for excuses to hate, just like Jeff and Politico.

      1. TheReEncogitationer   2 years ago

At one forum last year, at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Holland, Sylvia Rhodea, a co-founder of Ottawa Impact and, now, vice chair of the county commission, described the election as one that “will decide whether we are going to save America, and that starts local.” America, she said, is a place of opportunity “built on the Constitution, Christianity and capitalism.”

The U.S. Constitution doesn't mention Christianity or any other religion once and under that Constitution, anyone can practice Capitalism regardless of religion or lack thereof, Let Sylvia Rhodea keep her Christianity in her Church, not in County Commission meetings where all Citizens are supposed to be represented.

        1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

She did. That's why the discussion was at her church.

          1. TheReEncogitationer   2 years ago (edited)

Judging from the “Contract With Ottawa,” it doesn’t look like that confinement of religion to houses of worship is going to last long.

On one hand the fifth plank says: “Honor all people equally due to their individual intrinsic value and worth; reject ideology that segregates people into groups to justify treating them differently.”

And yet the Governing Principles right from the start privileges a specific religious worldview: “We recognize our nation’s Judeo-Christian heritage and celebrate America as an exceptional nation blessed by God. ”

And right before the signature, it says Soli Deo gloria.

Yep, this is going to be something to see.

        2. mtrueman   2 years ago

" or any other religion once and under that Constitution,"

It plenty mentions the months of the year and days of the week, all named after pagan gods.

Where are the dead bodies and burned buildings?

They formed Ottawa Impact, recruiting a slate of candidates to run against the commission’s Republican incumbents.

Reichardt, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a centrist Republican in 2010 before leaving the GOP and becoming an independent last year, said, “They think they are doing God’s work, and they truly believe it. They are beyond right-wing. They are Proud Boys-ian. Clearly, that’s what they are, when they refer to diversity, equity and inclusion as being ‘divisive.’”

  51. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago

Oh shit, speaking of CHAZ (since it was brought up above) the city lost its lawsuit:

SEATTLE — Anger and resentment linger on Capitol Hill nearly three years after angry protests over police brutality gave birth to the violent and lawless Capitol Hill Organized Protest zone.

Business owners are expecting the city of Seattle to pay up in March as part of a settlement with more than a dozen people who sued the city, claiming the CHOP zone led to damaged property and threatened their safety amid shootings, assaults, and the precinct being abandoned during that time.

The CHOP zone emerged from early June until July 2020 following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Tents and demonstrators blocked police and fire crews from the neighborhood in an effort to seek racial justice and an end to police violence, but it became something very different.

Frankly, I'm amazed they were able to get ANY justice, what with Jenny Durkan enjoying Qualified Immunity from personal lawsuits.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago

And they lost ANOTHER lawsuit related to CHAZ. There is some justice, even though it's got dead bodies in its wake.

Seattle settles one CHOP lawsuit with wrongful death deal over teen gunned down on edge of protest zone

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

There isn't actual justice unless the people who did it and then cleaned up the crime scene are strung up from tree.

Where is it the libertarian position to let tyranny roll across the planet?

I mist have missed that one. Free trade around the world, on the other hand...

  79. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago

  80. Chumby   2 years ago (edited)

The MIC is a crony organization after the US taxpayer’s dollar. Trade via neo imperialism is not free trade. Had the US/NATO not intervened in the first place, a resolution to this mess likely would have occurred without the mess. Free trade is not Hunter Biden and other politicians’ children getting backroom deal payoffs.

Eastern Europe is across an ocean and most of a continent. Let the adults there determine their future.

Freedom and liberty are not right-wing concepts. They are universal concepts.

The problem is the more granular, tangible instantiations of these broad concepts. We all disagree on that.

A socialist might claim that a starving, naked, homeless, penniless man isn't actually free, even if there was no one directly committing aggression against him. Sure, no one is actively harming him, but what exactly is this man "free" to do? Die?

A libertarian on the other hand would argue that the man's current state doesn't matter, all that matters is aggression (or lack thereof) being leveled against him. The man is in a state of perfect freedom even if he currently has no means by which to do anything.

Obviously I tend to favor the latter point of view over the former. However I do recognize that socialists who advocate for the former sincerely believe they are advocating for "freedom" as they understand the concept.

It is the same with liberty, or justice, or these other very broad concepts. EVERYONE is in favor of "liberty" and "justice" and "freedom" on some level. We just don't all have a shared understanding of the tangible practical meaning behind those terms.

  87. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

The US press is already trying. From May 2020:

    https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/michigan-coronavirus-protesters-shout-liberty-right-wing-rhetoric-weaponizes-freedom-ncna1206596

It is not simply our understanding of "liberty" that is lacking. The rhetoric of freedom — and it is very specifically an American understanding — is code for ethical carelessness, as well as political and social dominance. "Freedom!" functions as the invincibility shield of white supremacists, who shout it like "fire" in a theater. And, like the chaos of a fire, it is tactically deployed by Republican and conservative leaders to incite civic unrest and the public's distrust of government.

  88. Chumby   2 years ago

Had the west stayed out of things, a natural order would have resolved a local conflict. Unfortunately, more of the same. For the US, $100B plus later and continued increasing risk of nuclear weapon use has been a disaster. NATO breaking its word, Kiev violating Minsk, Azov types committing genocide in Donbass, Graham et. al. visiting there and fomenting regime change, bioweapons labs, politicians’ kids getting kickbacks. Team neocon has been busy.

  90. Chumby   2 years ago

We apparently have a lot of authority over Zelensky. A little over a year ago, Biden (D) instructed him not to negotiate with Moscow regarding Minsk and Biden (D) reportedly continues to do this neocon job. Milley has complained that the WH is blocking all attempts at a settlement. The WH has recently called for a Ukrainian offensive. It might happen - more videos are showing up out of there showing recruiting “agents” kidnapping young men on the streets to send them off to war.

"Freedom and liberty are not right-wing concepts. They are universal concepts."

That's why I've stopped referring to people like you as left-wing, Jeff.

Some of the loudest voices for freedom right now are coming from people who identify as left, Weiss, Robbins, Brand, Greenwald, Taibbi, ect.

You and your ilk on the other hand have nothing to do with them and are antagonistic and virulently hostile to freedom and liberty.

That's one of many reasons why I think you're an actual Nazi.

  93. TheReEncogitationer   2 years ago

Socialism is the very thing which renders the individual "starving, naked, homeless, and penniless,". So they got that going for them.

  94. ObviouslyNotSpam   2 years ago

That's a but like Putin referring to the "war"...

  95. mtrueman   2 years ago

"That’s one of many reasons why I think you’re an actual Nazi."

Nazis weren't hostile to freedom and liberty. Right up until the war the borders allowed traffic in both directions. Private property was respected and business and international trade carried on as usual. You are probably confusing them with the Bolsheviks, who closed the borders and severely restricted ownership of property and trade.

  109. JFree   2 years ago

It's not 'their' pipeline. Nord Stream 2 fired all its employees on Mar 1 2022 and is either in or filing for or being forced into bankruptcy already. Nord Stream 1 is highly indebted and it couldn't play chicken with gas supply for longer than bond/bank payments come due.

In both cases, bankruptcy means the bondholders and banks will own the companies and the shareholders (Gazprom is a 51% shareholder but paid no cash for its ownership stake) will be wiped out. Those bondholders and banks are WESTERN not Russian. Russia blowing up that pipeline means those bondholders and banks now own nothing.

Gazprom owns multiple land-based gas pipelines connected to Europe. The only reason Nordstream was built (and financed almost entirely by Western Europe) was because Russia and Ukraine/Poland kept arguing over gas transit prices - with Russia periodically shutting down those pipelines to Europe - in the 1990's.

Well guess what - Russia intends to eliminate the Ukraine government. Eliminating Nordstream (which I repeat is NOT Gazprom's once bankruptcy happens) told Europe - you want gas, then accept the elimination of Ukraine because there ain't no alternative route for that gas anymore.

  110. Chumby   2 years ago
