Presidents' Day Is a Good Reminder To Treat the Presidency With Skepticism
While the office was created with "modest authority and limited responsibilities," the modern president has increasingly unchecked power and authority.

Each February, Americans celebrate Presidents' Day with those two national pastimes: a day off work if they can get it, and sales on consumer goods. Originally established to commemorate George Washington's birthday, in 1971 Congress switched the holiday to the third Monday in February so as to include Abraham Lincoln's birthday as well.
On the federal level, the holiday is still known as Washington's Birthday, but in the popular imagination, it honors not only Washington and Lincoln but the history of the presidency itself, as well as all who have served. But this is exactly the wrong way to think about any government position, much less one imbued with as much power as the presidency.
Washington famously chose to retire after two terms in office rather than risk becoming akin to a king in the new nation. But in the more than two centuries since, the executive branch accrued enormous power in direct contradiction to what the Founders intended. As the Cato Institute's Gene Healy wrote in 2008, "The Founding Fathers designed a presidency of modest authority and limited responsibilities." Today, however, the president enjoys the unilateral ability to set trade policy, start wars, and accomplish legislative tasks through executive orders.
Each of the above powers was constitutionally given to the legislative branch, but over time a pliant Congress increasingly ceded these roles to the executive. And that's to say nothing of the other powers, like invoking the Defense Production Act to force private companies to make certain products, that Congress directly signed over to the president.
And yet the office of the presidency remains broadly popular, and the president's power tends to go unchallenged, what Healy refers to as "the cult of the presidency." An oft-quoted canard says that we should "respect the presidency, if not the president." But it can be hard to separate those two impulses; it's difficult to balance effective criticism of a politician against an inherent deference for his office.
There is some evidence that Americans are tiring of the pomp and frills imbued in the office of the presidency—but unfortunately, that's only when their party is out of power. As Politico's Michael Schaffer wrote, "These days, with significant portions of the country telling pollsters that the identity of the president affects their day-to-day happiness, we have a situation that might confound hero-worshippers and dirt-diggers alike: On any given day, around half the country is liable to find the institution itself a painful subject to think about."
Perhaps the institution should always be a painful subject to think about, or at least an unromanticized one. As Reason's Billy Binion wrote, "Presidents aren't saints. They aren't monarchs. They aren't celebrities. And they aren't your friends! The executive leader is an employee of the country—someone whose job was, and still should be, limited in size and scope."
Indeed, while individual presidents can be criticized or lauded for their individual actions, the office itself should be returned to the functionary role it was historically intended to serve. And Presidents' Day is a perfect time to remember to treat the office not with inherent respect but just as any other taxpayer-funded role.

The executive leader is an employee of the country—someone whose job was, and still should be, limited in size and scope.
The current “employee of the country” Biden (D) has been doing side deals so his kid gets graft, regularly sleeps on the job, is inarticulate, needs assistance putting on a sport coat, was caught with company secrets offsite, shits his pants regularly and has been gifting copious amounts of company assets to a division of another company.

The House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into a $2 billion investment by the Saudi government into a firm formed by Jared Kushner after he left the White House last year.
After leaving the White House. And there doesn't seem to be anything conclusive from the oversight committee. I tried searching for any report from them and came up empty.

Hunter's business prior to the election was peddling his father's influence with 10% for the Big Guy. That's been fairly well documented. He did it when Joe was VP, and he did it after Joe was VP.
10% for the Big Guy is meaningless.
Hardly, Pluggo. 10% is not meaningless. 10% can be a rather substantial amount on money.
Pluggo also thinks a 10% increase at the grocery store is meaningless.
Um, unlike the committee that has no report regarding Kushner, we do have a laptop abandoned by Hunter Biden, and corroboration of what has been found on it. Where's your hard evidence on Kushner other than an accusation to be investigated by committee?
"10% for the Big Guy is meaningless."
Don't agree it is meaningless, but it is not enough to hang an impeachment or fraud conviction on.

Wow, it IS possible to deprogram a Trump Cultist after all.
I was pedal-to-the-metal defending him. I said we’ll forgive him for anything unless you betray us on immigration.
Replace "immigration" with "abortion" and that sentence describes your approach to Biden:
"The Afghanistan shitshow wasn't a big deal!"
"OK it was a big deal but Juan Cole told me it was all Trump's fault!"
"There is no inflation!"
"OK there is inflation but other countries have it too so you're not allowed to complain!"
"Ignore the fact that your portfolio tanked in 2022 and focus on good news like rig count!"
"Trump is Putin's bitch so just ignore that Putin didn't attack Ukraine under Trump and only invaded after Biden took over!"
"The laptop is Russian disinformation!"

An actual negotiated pullout was thrown in the garbage and instead allies were betrayed, tens of thousands of people died, Americans were abandoned, and a sympathetic government fell, solely because orangemanbad.
No other reason, but it was a reason, and certainly wasn't a mistake. In fact it was so horrible and wicked that the UK parliament censured a president for the first time in history.
And yet here you are, downplaying it, like the evil Neocon shill that you are.
Biden (D) honored the fallen Americans, who were killed during his botch in Kabul, by continuing to check his watch when their corpses were returned to Dover.
There were no young girls hair he could sniff, so the event was boring to him.
And Donnie called fallen American WW2 veterans "losers" while visiting Normandy.

Tu quoque. Except we have video of Biden checking his watch and are not relying on anonymous sources regarding thr Trump allegation. Iirc, The Atlantic reported that Trump skipped the cemetery due to foul weather. Hardly a pro-Trump entity.
There are valid criticisms of Trump such as the enhanced unemployment and not exiting NATO after he threatened it.
Another difference is that Biden’s botchery led to a dangerous situation in Kabul. As the CiC, the buck stops there. Those deaths were on his record. The least Biden could have done is act presidential but he chose a different path.
"...Except we have video of Biden checking his watch and are not relying on anonymous sources regarding thr Trump allegation..."

'As the Cato Institute's Gene Healy wrote in 2008, "The Founding Fathers designed a presidency of modest authority and limited responsibilities." Today, however, the president enjoys the unilateral ability to set trade policy, start wars, and accomplish legislative tasks through executive orders.'
Which is exactly what most Americans want. Between corrupting influences who find it easier to manipulate the Executive branch, power-hungry Presidents and parties, and idiot citizens who need a simple authority figure, the imperial presidency is guaranteed.
The Founding Fathers designed a presidency of modest authority and limited responsibilities.
Well, the Founding Fathers intended a federal government of modest authority and limited responsibilities. So, yeah, that would pretty much stand to reason. The problem is what do you do when federal power and authority has been expanded beyond any reasonable bounds? You can try weakening the presidency. But, what that winds up meaning is that you create rule by an unaccountable bureaucracy with no particular incentive to respond to the wishes of the electorate.
In the end, the people are to blame. It doesnt have to be this way, but those idiots voted for it.
Yes, people are to blame but so is Lincoln, Wilson, Roosevelt, LBJ and Obama.
All of them advanced the idea of big, overwhelming, all powerful government.

“Not responsible for all the fascism around the Communist Chinese Virus.”
Well, that’s pretty much true. He was off duty during peak COVID fascism. Some other guy was President, and even he wasn't responsible since most of the COVID fascism was at the state and local level.
"Not responsible for hiding secret documents."
"Hiding" is a bit of partisan spin. He fully cooperated with NARA, unlike Trump.
Now do Obama.
Seriously? You are bringing up that debunked talking point.
Obama's stash of Presidential documents in Chicago has been under NARA control from day one.
You mean Hoffman Estates, in this building here: https://goo.gl/maps/DsCJXfrHBBE6THdEA
Does this look secure to you? https://goo.gl/maps/anbTdsVoQCBupFFx8
2500 W. Golf Road, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a former retail furniture store. Mar-A-Lago is far more secure than that place.
So NARA acts differently based on who the president is. Not sure why you think this is a defense here.
He had documents from 1974...
But, to be clear, I agree with several of your assessments. Although I'm sure I'll be accused of lying about that by the usual suspects.
But to be clear you defended democrats against accusations multiple times then retreated to a sniveling damnation of both only after doing so and being given evidence against to merely pretend to be unbiased.

HARNWELL: Biden goes to Kiev (but not East Palestine)
The longest Fuck You to the American people by their supposed president continues its squalid trajectory.
Like anyone at Reason is in a position to say that after four years of being completely unfair to Trump and then giving complete deference to Biden. No principles at all. Just unfairly unfair unfairness towards Trump and praise for Biden. Fucking leftists. Real libertarians are Republicans.
That's right. Real libertarians are Ron Paul REVOLUTION devotees who are doctrinaire Republicans, just like Ron Paul was, on every issue except maybe two or three. It's those two or three deviations from Republican orthodoxy that makes one a TRUE LIBERTARIAN.
"No, I'm not a Republican! Why yes I agree with Republicans on abortion, transgender issues, same-sex marriage, stopping 'wokeness', closing the border, launching trade wars against China, but you see, I disagree with them on pot, therefore, I am totally not a Republican!"
Republicans support economic liberty because they lower taxes, and they support personal liberty because they don't want to take away our guns.
It goes back to what I have been saying about traditional conservatism. IMO, traditional conservatism dictates that the people have liberty to live their lives as they see fit - so long as their choices fall within a narrow range of morally acceptable ones.
So to them, people who make choices outside of this narrow range, they ought to be punished by the state, and - this is the important part - this punishment is not a violation of anyone's liberty, because to them, *they never had the liberty to make those choices in the first place*. Because to them liberty is primarily a privilege that only the morally righteous get to enjoy.
So parents have the liberty to take their kids to museums, or theme parks, or libraries. But they don't have the liberty to take their kids to libraries hosting a drag queen story hour.
So parents have the liberty to take their kids to museums, or theme parks, or libraries. But they don’t have the liberty to take their kids to libraries hosting a drag queen story hour.
Are they going after parents, or are they using the leftist tactic of demonizing businesses so they can impose rules upon them to save the children?
Well the latter, of course.
But they don't view it as a violation of anyone's liberty. That's the point.
Jeffy says that unless you believe that parents should be free to do whatever they wish with their children, as if children were livestock, you're not a libertarian. Oh, wait—we have laws protecting the welfare of livestock. Make that, "as if children weren't even alive."
Jeff wants parents to be able to bang their kids in the name of freedom.
Jesse wants government cameras in every household monitoring parents to make sure they are parenting "correctly".
Cite?
Vernon says that the government should be as small as possible... except when it comes to raising kids, in which case, government should be as large as necessary to protect every single one of them from their own parents, because, as we all know from that great libertarian icon Hillary Clinton, "it takes a village to raise a child".
A government that can't take action against parents who are harming their children is too small. A government that advocates and subsidizes the harming of children is a debased tyranny and should be overthrown.
And Vernon's definition of "harm" to kids is so broad, it encompasses merely behavior that he finds morally objectionable even if there is no physical harm.
So, you would not define poisoning kids with drugs and hormones and chopping off tits as "harm"?
https://www.yalemedicine.org/conditions/pediatric-cancer-treatment
So, is it "harm" to give chemo treatment to a child suffering from cancer?
Big bit of difference between treating cancer there, Jeffy, and chemically cutting off the kid's wiener or ovaries. Nice try at deflection and obfuscation though. I'll rate the effort at 3 stars out of a possible 5.
"Make that, “as if children weren’t even alive.”"
From the party of abortions? Makes sense.
Hmm, to get some conversation going today, I’ll pose a question that I posed the other day.
In Idaho, especially in Canyon County, several children whose parents are members of the Followers of Christ, who believe only in faith healing, have died from conditions that could have been treated by modern medicine. Here’s a reference:
https://www.idahostatesman.com/article270467052.html
Should the Idaho (and Federal) government continue to keep their hands off these parent’s parenting decisions? Should they intervene if a child’s life is at stake?
If the government should keep their hands off of Followers of Christ parenting decisions, should they be consistent by keeping their hands off other parents “gender-affirming care” decisions? Should they keep their hands off parents deciding to take their kids to a drag queen story hour?
Or, vice versa, if the government should intervene in gender-affirming care decisions should they also intervene against relying on faith healing in the case where a child has a terminal illness?
Should the Idaho (and Federal) government continue to keep their hands off these parent’s parenting decisions? Should they intervene if a child’s life is at stake?
Yes, they should, just like they have in the past
So just so you're clear, if a parent purposefully stands by while a child dies of an easily preventable condition, then parents should be held liable for pushing their children into gender-changing surgery. Perhaps moreso. Because one was caused by a lack of action, the other caused by a deliberate positive action.
So, your vote is for being completely hands off of parents. But with the possibility of after-the-fact liability.
Just to be clear, when you say "parents should be held liable", who in this scenario would be bringing suit against the parents? The government or a private party?
Are you intentionally misreading his posts?
What?
You said “Yes, they should”
“Who in this scenario would be bringing suit against the parents? The government or a private party?”
How can I clarify the question for you?
I think this is a tough question. And generally speaking, when libertarians are confronted with difficult cases like this, the general rule ought to be to err on the side of liberty.
In a purely libertarian order, it would be interesting to consider if there would be a course of legal action for some relative of these kids to bring a tort against the parents for some type of negligent behavior. Maybe, maybe not.
I think the last thing anyone would want is for there to be one uniform rule dictated by a central government.
"I think this is a tough question."
Because you are mature enough to acknowledge messiness and imperfection of real life.
I've been pondering this question since I brought it up a day or two ago. The position I arrive at, which I fully acknowledge is imperfect, is that the government should step in and forcibly provide modern medical treatment for the child, but there has to be a high bar for that force to kick in. Not sure what the bar would be exactly: a court order, imminent threat of death, ... ??? Like you, I don't just give a smug, off-hand answer and say, "That settles it!"
How does that translate to gender-affirming care, keeping in mind, among other things, consistency?
I would be fine with laws saying that a person has to be over 18 before receiving a gender-affirming hysterectomy or penis surgery, BUT only if it can be shown that it is a real problem that is actually happening.
So far, no commenter here has presented any solid evidence that such surgeries occur.
Since US surgeons and clinics already have a self-imposed guideline that they won't do such surgeries on anyone under 18, it is culture warring busybody-ism to make a law to solve a non-existent problem. If a law really were necessary, I would even consider arguments that the age should be 21, not 18.
But what about "top surgery". I would be fine with laws saying you must be 18 to get top surgery, but I would expect consistency -- if there is no top surgery for gender-affirming purposes, it should also be illegal for cosmetic reasons (i.e. "boob jobs").
How does that translate to gender-affirming care
There is no such thing as “gender”, and so there is no such thing as medical “treatment” for being “transgender”. “Gender affirming care” is just a particularly horrible form of cosmetic surgery.
I would be fine with laws saying that a person has to be over 18 before receiving a gender-affirming hysterectomy or penis surgery
But permanently damaging their bodies with puberty blockers and hormones is OK. You’re a sick freak.
So far, no commenter here has presented any solid evidence that such surgeries occur.
We have presented the evidence repeatedly.
for gender-affirming purposes, it should also be illegal for cosmetic reasons
They are both cosmetic.
Accurate summary.
In the case of the faith healing parents, they allowed nature to take its course for an easily preventable medical condition, believing that God would intervene.
In the case of gender-transforming parents, they believe that nature and God [as much as one believes in God] has failed them, so they must override nature and [God].
The former believes in God to the detriment of their child's health.
The latter believes it is God to the detriment of their child's health.
"In the case of the faith healing parents, they allowed nature to take its course"
Not so. They attempted to heal the child with faith. That is asking for supernatural intervention.
"In the case of gender-transforming parents, they believe that nature and God [as much as one believes in God] has failed them, so they must override nature and [God]."
How do you know what parents of a trans child think about God?
Should the Idaho (and Federal) government continue to keep their hands off these parent’s parenting decisions? Should they intervene if a child’s life is at stake?
From a purely Constitutional point of view - Yes. No.
Who determines when the life is at stake?
The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.
Here's your cite. https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendment
Gender affirmation and queer drag story hour are not religions. Yet.
What’s your personal answer, though. There is a lot of room for interpretation when it comes to applying Constitutional rights; it's not like exceptions are never made.
You wrote “Yes. No.”
You asked two questions. The first yes, the second no.
My personal opinion is the same.
Who decides what life at stake means?
I liked the Diane/Paul answer above.
The former believes in God to the detriment of their child’s health.
The latter believes it is God to the detriment of their child’s health
And each decision is fraught with consequence. If the government is playing what if:
What if they take the child away to save it and the child dies anyway? The parents could conclude that had they kept the child the child would have survived.
What if the treatment that is forced on the child harms them in another way, maybe requiring long term medical care? Having no medicine in your life then having strong chemistry introduced can also cause harm. Again the parents can make a case the child would have been better off without the interference or even being taken as per their belief in God.
Let's say the government steps in and saves the child. Turns out the treatment is exactly what was needed. Now the child may be ostracized in the community or the parents kicked out because of the government's interference in an agreed upon religious belief system.
Who gets to say when the life is at risk? Do we trust the government to not mess this up too?
Comparing to Gender Dysphoria I can't do better than Diane/Paul except to add that the parents in some cases are playing God for the sake of their own gain/status in that community. It is creepy.
So, deciding to rely on faith healing doesn’t qualify as “playing God”?
How can appealing to the God of your beliefs be playing God? That reasoning doesn't make sense.
If they rely on faith to heal that is their belief. It doesn't matter to them whether you believe it will work, they do. That is called having faith, not playing God.
"queer drag story hour ": Maybe not the religion parts of the First Amendment, but I could see someone making an argument free speech or freedom of assembly applies.
And, of course, as you hint at, all it takes is for someone to say that drag queen story hours are part of their religion.
For the story hour and drag queen, sure. The government schools assembling children against their parents will, without their parents knowing or at an age that is inappropriate for the child to even understand what they are witnessing is not a freedom of assembly or speech issue.
A religious cult in the making, though....
A school organizing the drag queen story hour is a special case of the more generic scenario I gave in my question.
What about when it’s not a school organizing?
"so long as their choices
fall within a narrow range of morally acceptable onesdon't harm others in a way that violates others' rights."Fixed it.
Right on, jeff.
Real libertarians spend all their time criticizing Republicans even when Democrats are in power, link to BrooklynDad Twitter memes, Salon articles, and an essay begging DARK BRANDON to save us from fascism while defending critical race theory and pointing to Chris Rufo as the major problem with American education.
With the absence of Michael Hihn you're now the undisputed king of libertarian purity.
No no no. Real libertarians are totally in favor of free minds and free markets, except when it comes to certain billionaires hiring undocumented labor. In that case, the market is way too free and the heavy hand of government should squash his free-marketing ways.
Jeffy says slavery is libertarian. Repeal the 13th Amendment!
Vernon buys into the leftist premise that working for a freely agreed-upon wage is morally equivalent to involuntary servitude and slavery. Time for the worker's revolution!
Apparently you are ignorant of the conditions suffered by many illegal aliens. Involuntary servitude is happening.
No shit. If Reason had any real libertarians on their staff they'd support trade wars, closed borders, and subsidies for favored businesses. Only leftists oppose those things.
Umm... you openly support the Ukraine war.
Biden does all those things minus closed borders, yet never a peep regarding him from you.
And once again you, like jeff, misrepresent the issue of open borders. Hint. Massive welfare state.
You may have missed my new support of CRT in high schools (after opposing it till now).
Here it is:
Racism persisted after emancipation.
That's it. No more.
It is CRT, no question. But without the blame Whitey part.
Genuis, isn't it?

So youre in agreement with DeSantis. This is awkward.
Ronnie supports teaching CRT in high school?
Racism persisted after emancipation.
That is the entire course. Full CRT. No controversy. Non debatable.
You said it's full CRT. DeSantis did too. Therefore, you're on the same page. However, it seems you want it taught. Yep, Pluggo is so not a Democrat, folks.

CRT requires race based separations and blame. Your statement is not CRT. DeSantis is fine with teaching slavery and such, as has been taught for decades.
Sorry dumbass. Your italicized statement is teaching history, like DeSantis advocates. Teaching kids racial blame is not. That is what CRT is.
Identitarianism is at the heart of critical theory. Critical economic theory identifies everyone as either a prole or someone controlling the means of production, and that identity completely and permanently defines your economic role in society. Critical race theory defines everyone, past and present, as Black or White, and asserts that identity immutably defines who you are socially. If you're Black, then the grievances, accomplishments, responsibilities, etc., of every Black person who ever lived belong to you. If you are White, then the guilt, debts, blames, and privileges of every White person ever are yours. When American history is taught from that perspective, then Critical Race Theory is being taught, even if that term is never used and the authors of the theory are never mentioned.
Real libertarians believe that Democrats are evil but Republicans are merely misguided.
Real libertarians condemn Democrats for every fault, but give Republicans a pass for their much more egregious errors.
Real libertarians are cheap whores for the Republican Party and have no dignity nor self-respect to demand real liberty on their own terms without seeking the pathetic approval of their right-wing masters.
It's like a tiny online circle-jerk.
speaking of cheap whores...
I see you've looked in a mirror.
Smallest dick measuring contest between the "true" libertarian lefties.
Their contest was frot with members rubbing each other the wrong way.
Sad you missed an opportunity to denigrate Ashley Babbitt again. Finally a cop murder you can support.
Plus why do they keep talking about Trump?! After all, he has completely left the political scene, so why talk about him?!
TDS is a terrible disease. You should have yours looked at too.
he has completely left the political scene
I wish. Fatass has decided to run for POTUS again and Republicans are stupid enough to make him #1 in recent polls.
Trump is indeed running for POTUS again, but some commenters here say that is not sufficient reason to talk about him.

And what is it that so upset them? What is it that made these sensitivity readers conclude that Dahl’s books must be changed, so they ‘can continue to be enjoyed by all today’, in the words of Puffin? The word ‘fat’, for one. That’s gone from every book – sparing the blushes of characters like Augustus Gloop, the fat lad from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Oompa-Loompas are now no longer ‘titchy’ or ‘tiny’. Just ‘small’. They’ve also gone gender-neutral for good measure, with ‘small men’ swapped for ‘small people’.

Feminism's female problem.
https://www.spiked-online.com/2023/02/19/feminism-has-a-woman-problem/
Amid all this gauche, progressive posturing, it seems that feminism might be finding itself again – in the unlikely form of the ‘TERF’. TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) began as a pejorative label, but has turned into a category that, in our current state of hyperreality, has come to seem more recognisable than ‘woman’. The TERF is the ageing child of the women’s liberation movement – a stroppy straight-talker who refuses to have her knowledge and experience dismissed by those who insist it is bigoted to question gender ideology.
Feminism’s female problem.
Perhaps Paleo-conservatives are onto something. Women should have never been granted the right to vote. All they do is vote in their own self-interest.
Repeal the 19th Amendment!
Hell, just repeal all the amendments. Let's go with the Originalist Constitution.

Feminism was created by the CIA. Gloria Steinham was a CIA asset.
The CIA was involved in many other things in the 60s and 70s including the spread of LSD, the counter culture movement, Charlie Manson, even rock music. Much of it involved Laurel Canyon. Even some famous rock bands were created by CIA.
No wonder their lyrics were unintelligible; bureaucrats can't write intelligibly.

What was most remarkable about Washington was (to riff off a fellow whose birthday we celebrated last month) the content of his character.
But I have been told that when selecting a President, a candidate's individual character doesn't matter, only policies.
Well except for Bill Clinton. BJ's from interns are Verbotten.
For the modern Republican Party, getting BJs from interns is now a requirement for the job.

Well, the example of Washington probably serves as a good example of this. As good a man as Washington was (and he deserves to be called great), it didn't do much to prevent the Federalists from putting in a central bank, making war on the American people, and flouting the First Amendment with the Alien and Sedition Acts.
Those laws were post-Washington, though I suppose in retirement he was for them.
Well, at least every POTUS since has heeded his warning about entangling alliances…
College vaccine insanity.
https://nypost.com/2023/02/19/its-insane-that-colleges-still-mandate-vaccines/
Headlines last week declared natural immunity better protection than vaccines, based on a Lancet study Thursday that backed up a groundbreaking Israeli study from . . . August 2021. Yet vaccine mandates continue to block a full return to normalcy, and it’s taking a particularly hard toll on college kids.
There's a restaurant in my area that still requires proof of vaccination AND proof of booster shots. I couldn't believe it.
No big deal.
Just sit outside and take note of who still patronizes that restaurant, and avoid them like the plague they are.
I mean surely you don't spend money in any establishment that is trying to kill young men.

In my favorite (for all the wrong reasons) edit, in “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” a reference to tractors that reads “the machines were both black” has been cut on grounds of subliminal racism.
Yes, the color of tractors is apparently a racial issue!
The actual racist part is that tractors aren't black; they are green, red, or orange.
At least these sensitivity readers have a long-term job - it will take time to purge all the insensitivity out of an author who gloried in his transgressiveness (and made fans from his young readers in doing so).
Misogynist Don Lemon, or CNN lacks standards (like we didn't know that already).

he was absolutely correct about that. Everyone knows it. The whole world has always known it as a basic obvious fact in every society that ever exited, from the beginning of the human race.
But his crime was he said it out loud.
His *mistake* was attributing this in some way as a qualification to run for or hold office.
Yeah, now attack him after he says something sensible about how women peak before 50.
Enough about Hillary Clinton.
The problem with Don Lemon is that nobody has ever told him he’s not as good as he thinks he is.
Pretty sure you could say that about most mainstream "journalists."
There's a reason why Lemon remained on CNN while everyone else was getting shitcanned.
And it wasn't for his prowess as a journalist either.

Have you figured out why you have your urges?
In 1976 the country elected Jimmy Carter. Among Carters goal was to reduce the some of the imperial nature that had developed around the Presidency. Mostly President Carter got ridiculed for his attempts to do this.
As the articles notes the biggest problem with our Presidency is a lazy Congress afraid to take votes. Congress can take back its role anytime it likes, but that appears more and more unlikely to happen.
Carter was easily the most humble of all the recent presidents. And the most libertarian by far.
I know the wingnuts always retort DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION!!!
But it already existed inside of HEW. To kill it you must separate it first. Carter did that. Just the other dopes couldn't finish the job.
I pointed that out the other day and was told that Republicans were responsible for all the good stuff that happened during his administration, thus he gets no credit. Just like all the bad things that happened under the Trump administration were caused by Democrats.
You were hilariously slapped down by multiple people posting actual evidence and knowledge on why your Carter reformation project was wrong.
Even here Shrike also misses the department of energy.
Both of you are ignorant as to the impetus of his deregs, largely being forced into it during an election cycle.
These facts were noted and linked to you yesterday. Your acknowledged refusal to educate yourself is noted.
Yes we know. Every deregulation is due to Republicans. No Democrat ever *really* supports any deregulation.

Well, it's the one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
https://news.yahoo.com/biden-kyiv-show-solidarity-ukraine-101426523.html
So I understand the libertarian skepticism of entanglement with a foreign conflict. However, IMO it is completely libertarian to oppose international aggression against a neighbor. What is the libertarian answer to resisting aggression on an international level? I think helping the victim resist the aggression is completely appropriate, and the details of precisely what form that help ought to take, reasonable people can disagree.
The libertarian answer is to have a free market in weapons and ammunition, and allow Ukraine to purchase whatever they can afford of negotiate for. The same should apply to hiring soldiers.
"I think helping the victim resist the aggression is completely appropriate"
And you should be allowed to do so. Our government should not compel all of us to participate.
Site needs a "like" feature.
Cash-and-carry on weapons, as well as voluntary donations of weapons to Ukrainians defending their Life, Liberty, and Property. That is all I have ever called for.
I’ve seen the argument before that the libertarian solution to foreign entanglement is to leave it up to private citizens to contribute to foreign war efforts. If you think about it for a minute, that solution fails on practical grounds.
In diplomacy, no adversary is going to give our country a pass because it is our private citizens instead of our government running around financing armies.
“Oh, it was one of your citizens acting privately… Oh, you get a pass then. You cannot be expected to control what your people do.”
That was exactly the situation for decades with Catholic Americans supporting rebels in Ireland.
May I introduce you to the Spanish Civil War, Mike. Maybe they didn't get that far in your history classes. A lot of private individuals went there to fight and even financed armies, especially for the Republican side.
Ah, but the private free press of Denmark printed Mohammed cartoons and people sent them over the InnerTubz and the Danish Government did nothing, no matter how much the Saudi Sheikhs and Muslims worldwide bitched about it.
Wasn't the conversation about war and weapons, not cartoons?
Now do Israel.
Sure. Tel Aviv is the porn capital of the world.
😉
I know what you're saying. Israel is a hub of medical and IT development, and indeed develops it's own weapons systems like Uzi and Galil to sell abroad, so, yes it could afford to defend itself. In fact, without foreign aid, Israel wouldn't be constrained by the U.S. State Department to do what's needed to fight it's Islamist enemies.
I do think, though, it was highly irresponsible of Biden to go to Ukraine. If some incident had happened, it could have triggered World War III.
So I understand the libertarian skepticism of entanglement with a foreign conflict. However, IMO it is completely libertarian to oppose international aggression against a neighbor.
Libertarians for escalating the Vietnam war!
I repeat:
and the details of precisely what form that help ought to take, reasonable people can disagree.
So one can say "North Vietnam shouldn't commit acts of aggression against South Vietnam" without being in favor of instituting a draft and sending soldiers to Vietnam to fight on their behalf.
But do you say that?
Do you disagree with American military assistance being given to Ukraine? And I don't mean arms sales, I mean actual military assistance.
You vill eat zee bugz.
https://www.zerohedge.com/commodities/will-we-eat-bugs-french-biotech-firm-thinks-so
The edible insect industry is booming. And although the thought of eating bugs may be unappealing, insect protein is already being used for aquaculture, livestock feed, pet foods, and many products intended for human consumption. Insects are also being hailed as a possible solution to world hunger as increasing populations, and limited resources become a growing concern, and food industries are compelled to find viable alternatives.
They're trying so hard. They're probably going to end up having to mandate them.
So where do these straws in the noses of sea turtles come from anyway?
https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/which-countries-pollute-most-ocean-plastic-waste
Some might think that the countries producing or consuming the most plastic are the ones that pollute the oceans the most. But that’s not true.
According to the study, countries with a smaller geographical area, longer coastlines, high rainfall, and poor waste management systems are more likely to wash plastics into the sea.
Yes, if you are a North American disposing of your trash in a legal way, there is zero chance that any of your trash is ending up in the ocean.
Also, shortly after that photo was taken, the sea turtle checked itself into rehab and is now in a 12 step program.

Compulsory reading for either anti-war or Libertarianism is a contradiction in terms. Appeal to the self-interest in being alive and free FTW.
"compulsory" in public school is indistinguishable from "curriculum"

How to deal with gender in schools.
https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/activist-puts-out-guide-for-lawmakers-on-how-to-deal-with-gender-in-schools/article_91469bee-af04-11ed-a426-47a13454650f.html
In January, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Rufo to the New College of Florida board of trustees. The board of trustees then removed the president amid claims by DeSantis' administration that the college was putting political ideology above teaching students, the Wall Street Journal reported.
From the guide:
For example, the guide states, "No classroom instruction on human sexuality, sex education, gender identity, or -concepts shall occur in kindergarten through grade 5," unless it is required by the law.
But the problem with this, is that we all know that this will only apply to non-heterosexual gender identities.
If kindergartners get a story about a prince and a princess falling in love, then that is just as much a discussion about "gender identity" than if those kindergartners get a story about two men or two women falling in love. It's just that the former is considered "normal" but the latter is considered "taboo" or "sexualizing kids".
So, Jeffy, do you think Showgirls is also appropriate for an 8 year old?
No, because it's not age appropriate.
Here's an example of a book that is age-appropriate for kids.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heather_Has_Two_Mommies
So, ban it from public schools, or not?
From your link: On the other hand, the book drew criticism from both people against same-sex marriage and certain LGBT individuals themselves, as they thought the book did not portray same-sex parenthood correctly.
You, like Pluggo, should read your links fully first.
You didn't answer the question.
Is this book "grooming"? Should it be removed from schools?
Why does the book have to focus on her "mommies"? Why not just The Story of Heather, who just happens to live with two women?
Because they are both her mothers?
Why should the book try to conceal that from kids?
Because they are both her mothers?
No. They aren't.
Why does the book try to claim that they are?
Have you heard of this concept called "adoption"?
And here we thought you were more into abortion, Jeffy.
Have you heard of this concept called “adoption”?
Have you ever heard of this concept called "deflection"?
"And here we thought you were more into abortion, Jeffy."
If he can't have them dead, he'll have them reared in a cult that will cut off their breasts and sterilize them.
Why should the book conceal Heather's father? Why not a book called, "What Happened to Heather's Daddy"?
LOL! I said something similar in response to Jeffy below. The topic these books avoid is that it takes a man and a woman to generate a child. That is intentional.
Because in this story, Heather's biological father is not a part of her life. Her family is Heather and her two moms. What is wrong with a kid's story talking about Heather and her particular family relationship?
"But then kids will learn that it's possible to have a functional family that doesn't have both a man and a woman!" Is that what you are afraid of? You want kids to be indoctrinated into the (false) belief that a family MUST have both a man and a woman?
“But then kids will learn that it’s possible to have a functional family that doesn’t have both a man and a woman!” Is that what you are afraid of?
That is a strawman. Nobody has claimed anywhere among these threads that it is not appropriate to help kids understand that families can be different and still be good.
These stories always insist on the big reveal that Heather's mommies or Billy's daddies love each other, which necessitates the conversation about sexual attraction. If they did not include the romantic notions, they would be far less objectionable.
The Prince and Princess can fall in love, but there's no need to show them fucking.
That's fine. There's no fucking in the Snow White movie.
Likewise, Adam and Steve can fall in love, but just don't show them fucking.
Both fine for kids, right?
Or maybe stories about romantic love are simply not appropriate for public education?
Snow White showcases envy, deceit, murder, non-consensual kissing, gender stereotypes and personality disorders. What a horrible thing to display for little kids.
If you were to advocate that schools should not have ANY story about ANYONE falling in love, regardless of gender identity, then that at least would be a consistent position. It would be stupid, IMO, but consistent.
Instead, what we have is stories about heterosexual love are okay, but stories about homosexual love are "about sexual intercourse", even if it's the exact same story.
If you were to advocate that schools should not have ANY story about ANYONE falling in love, regardless of gender identity, then that at least would be a consistent position
Fuck off and die, gaslighter. My positions are consistent. There is absolutely no need for teachers to venture into explorations of romantic love. It is grooming behavior.
I doubt they're teaching Snow White, at least under that racist title.
I don't think we're allowed to say "dwarf" any more, either.
"Short people"?
Midget
Racist Germanic Aryan-tripe that glorifies white skin and unsolicited heterosexual advances and denigrates witches.
If kindergartners get a story about a prince and a princess falling in love, then that is just as much a discussion about “gender identity” than if those kindergartners get a story about two men or two women falling in love.
No. It isn't.
Groomer Jeffy seems to have no idea of the difference between stories that speak to love and lineage and stories that are implicitly about sexual behavior. There have always been stories telling of love and devotion between men (and between women) without any pretense of to them having a sexual relationship. The themes of brotherhood and sisterhood are universal and kids understand that families live together. Kids who have not been exposed to it don't automatically add sex to the story.
Congratulations, you've admitted to the double standard that I above complained about. Well done.
Again, fuck off. You don't get to claim my argument against the narrative you promote somehow supports your narrative.
Billy Has 2 Dads is a poison pill that generates questions that don't belong in a public school. Men who get married are having sex. It is the clear implication. Sex and love are not equivalent.
Want an alternative? How about No Girls in the House a story about how Billy's house has no girls living there? Serves the same purpose without broaching the subject of sex. The only question it generates, "What happened to Billy's mom?" is valid. You may not want to admit it, but every child in the world is the product of a man and a woman, whether they had intercourse or not. Billy had a mom, and that she isn't around and that is OK should be the only reason to tell the story.
The goal of Marxism is to eliminate the role of parents and replace it with the state. You claim you are not one, but the tune you bleat is in perfect syncopation.
Billy Has 2 Dads is a poison pill that generates questions that don’t belong in a public school. Men who get married are having sex. It is the clear implication. Sex and love are not equivalent.
Same with Snow White then. The final scene of Snow White (the movie) is the Prince whisking Snow White off to his castle. What do you think they are going to do at the castle, huh? HUH? And yet I have not heard a single person complain that Snow White is a story that is "sexualizing children".
Again, the double-standard:
When a man and a woman fall in love, they can have a beautiful relationship.
When two men fall in love, it's all about DIRTY SEX AND FORNICATION.
The final scene of Snow White (the movie) is the Prince whisking Snow White off to his castle. What do you think they are going to do at the castle, huh? HUH?
It's left up to your imagination, and your imagination, Jeffy, seems rather raunchy if I'm reading that right. There are a lot of things that can happen, but sex does not necessarily need be one of them. Given the era the story is set in, and the socioeconomic status of both Prince Charming and Snow White, they're probably looking at marriage first to avoid having any illegitimate children.
There are a lot of things that can happen, but sex does not necessarily need be one of them.
Then fine, that is the same when it comes to a story about two men falling in love. It doesn't necessarily have to lead to SEX.
You all simply cannot escape the double-standard that you have set for yourselves.
Heterosexual people falling in love - cute, charming, romantic, happy love
Homosexual people falling in love - DIRTY FILTHY PERVERTED FORNICATION
Methinks you are projecting just a wee little bit too hard there, Jeffy. You might want to get treatment for that.
Your fallacies grow weary. There are plenty of stories that show people demonstrating love without the need to assign sexual attraction as the reason.
People falling in love is not appropriate for schools.
And yet I have not heard a single person complain that Snow White is a story that is “sexualizing children”.
Actually, I immediately claimed it was an inappropriate story for school just 2 hours ago when you brought it up.
Which is funny, because a search for "Snow White" on this page shows that you were the first one to introduce that particular story to the conversation, Lying Jeffy, despite the lack of any evidence of a school that uses Snow White as part of the curriculum (which was the original topic). It does not surprise me that nobody ever had to tell teachers it would be inappropriate because it is fairly obvious that romantic stories don't belong in grade school.
So you have dissembled and you have deflected, how would you like to distract us?
It's possible that Jeffy was a victim of sexualizing abuse as a young child, and so, when he read or watched Snow White when he was a little boy, he DID fantasize about them fucking. Normalcy bias causes him to project that onto others.
That seems logical.
At the heart of the problem is that we have public schools, so we cannot agree to disagree about curriculum.
Realistically, though, public schools aren't going away. Even if we got rid of public schools, it would be much more difficult to get rid of public payment for schooling and any strings attached to that money.
Practically, then, the best we can do, in the current political environment, is support local school board control of curriculum. It is, of course, very imperfect.
Open borders, open elections, and corruption for all: Illinois to California, "Hold my beer!"

State Sen. Celina Villanueva, D-Chicago, said her Senate Bill 1345 is an extension of a bill that already allows for undocumented residents to vote on local school councils in Chicago. She said this needs to be expanded across the state because these families have children in public schools where they pay taxes.
It's a great day to stop referring to politicians as "leaders".
"'It’s a great day to stop referring to politicians as “leaders”."'
It's a great day to stop having "leaders" at all. I like to think of the President as a sort of "manager," working for the Board of Directors (the Congress), and answerable to the People, who own the entire operation.
I love the imagery. I picture Karen at the local IRS office demanding to speak to the President about the "Service".
Indeed. Perhaps the Nation would be better served if the President was looking for lost mail rather than trying to "save the world" from whatever the politically-motivated "emergency of the day" happens to be.
I agree with the general gist of your comment, but an effective manager still needs to exhibit leadership. We do need leadership, just not cultish, uber-deferential, President-worshipping leadership.
Dnc talking points accepted. Just don't call Mike of the left.
He swears he's not a Democrat.
"We do need leadership, just not cultish, uber-deferential, President-worshipping leadership."
Unfortunately, "leadership roles" tend to attract those who seek "to lead," and is antithetical to the rather "hands-off," anarchistic bent that is part of libertarianism.
I have long noted that The Salem (Witch-Burner) Radio Network refers to itself as "Your source for news and what to think about it" and "the best of news, thought leadership, and commentary."
Who the Hell needs "thought leadership" and to be told "news and what to think about it" except for a flock of sheeple?
Well, at least they are up front about it. The alphabet networks and Fox are much more subtle.

Presidential powers? How about tossing American citizens in camps for years?
EO 9066 , signed by that champion of the people, the tin-pot-dictator wanna-be FDR (egged on by the D governor of CA Warren):
"On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, initiating a controversial World War II policy with lasting consequences for Japanese Americans. The document ordered the forced removal of resident "enemy aliens" from parts of the West vaguely identified as military areas.
[...]
On the West Coast, long-standing racism against Japanese Americans, motivated in part by jealousy over their commercial success, erupted after Pearl Harbor into furious demands to remove them en masse to Relocation Centers for the duration of the war.
Japanese immigrants and their descendants, regardless of American citizenship status or length of residence, were systematically rounded up and placed in prison camps..."

Democracy is a fraud because public opinion is dictated. This is also why your can usually just disregard your political opponents. There's nothing to argue with - they lack consciousness. Debate is like trying to change the mind of a dog. It's just about building new incentives.

Prevent casts a wide net. The UK’s Daily Mail reported Friday that among the “potential signs of far-Right extremism” and “key texts” for “white nationalists/supremacists” that Prevent flagged were the “comedies Yes Minister and The Thick Of It, the 1955 epic war film The Dam Busters, and even The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare.”
.
And much more: “A report by Prevent’s Research Information and Communications Unit (RICU) described how far-Right extremists promoted ‘reading lists’ on online bulletin boards.” These include “The Lord Of The Rings by JRR Tolkien, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent, 1984 by George Orwell and the poems of GK Chesterton. It also referenced films including The Bridge On The River Kwai, The Great Escape and Zulu.”

Literature is right wing.
Probably racist too. Everyone knows that only white people know how to read. /sarc
In certain school districts, no one can read! (at grade level)
Cairo Community Unit Schools District 1 in Cairo, Illinois comes to mind. There's one high school there and one k-8 school, and no one is at grade level in math. No one.
https://wirepoints.org/not-a-single-student-can-do-math-at-grade-level-in-53-illinois-schools-for-reading-its-30-schools-wirepoints/
Spry is one of 30 schools in Illinois where not a single student can read at grade level. Twenty-two of those schools are part of the Chicago Public Schools and the other eight are outside Chicago.
The failure list in math is even longer. There are 53 schools statewide where not one kid is proficient in math.
Spry is probably 100% Mexican now. Maybe they should teach in Spanish.
There are a lot of public “educators” they really need to F-I-R-E I-N C-A-I-R-O. Otherwise these kids will never get The Cure for what ails them!
"Show me, show me, show me!" "Why, why, why!" "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me!"
Third time seems to be the charm with Robert Smith. What does he have, a Messiah Complex?
😉
In casting Orwell's work as right wing and targeting it for removal, the leftists have, unknowingly, just confirmed Orwell's work.
That group unwittingly fell into a trap of their own making. They(Prevent) just confirmed what Orwell warned us about.
"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue, street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered.
....History has stopped.Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
Wasn't Orwell himself actually quite left-wing?
Um, yes. He fought for the Republican faction in the Spanish Civil War and supported democratic socialism. Yet, Orwell himself warned of the dangers of totalitarianism in both 1984 and Animal Farm.
He thought he was left wing, but it seems not every left-winger agreed he was part of their club.
In WWII, he wrote articles explaining Britain to Americans, and promoted some obscure left-wing British party which to my knowledge never went anywhere. One could say this was emblematic of his wishful thinking on what the left ought to be.
Yes jeff. It is grooming.
The Times reported, "The lessons that tend to raise eyebrows outside the school, according to Vernacchio, are a medical research video he shows of a woman ejaculating — students are allowed to excuse themselves if they prefer not to watch — and a couple of dozen up-close photographs of vulvas and penises. The photos, Vernacchio said, are intended to show his charges the broad range of what’s out there."
.
"It’s really a process of desensitizing them to what real genitals look like, so they’ll be less freaked out by their own and, one day, their partner’s," the teacher added.
.
"I'm responsible for the sexuality education of all of our students from our youngest students who are three years old in nursery school, up through our 12th graders who are turning 18 and getting ready to leave high school. That's a huge range, but every single one of those kids is a sexual being. They have been since birth," he said. "And at every age and stage, we can offer them age appropriate, transformative sexuality education."
And yes the guy looks like a pedophile.
https://www.foxnews.com/media/english-teachers-sexuality-curriculum-showing-kids-penis-pics-ejaculation-video-school-approval
Then the stories of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are also "grooming".
To you all, "grooming" explicitly means talking to kids about non-heterosexual topics even if there is no sexually explicit content.
To you all, "grooming" means telling kids "it's okay if not everyone is straight" or "it's okay if sometimes two men fall in love or two women fall in love".
An ejaculation video is hardly on the same level as Snow White. Maybe on the level of Debbie Does Dallas. Do you think Debbie Does Dallas is appropriate for kids, Jeffy?
Do you think every medical instruction video is equivalent to pornography?
That’s a huge range, but every single one of those kids is a sexual being. They have been since birth,”
So you think the above statement is true?
You're avoiding the question.
Do you think every medical instruction video is equivalent to pornography?
The whole idea of babies being sexual is just purely fucked up. But jeff is into that post modernist bullshit.
That quote is, unironically, one of the creepier things I have heard this year.
That’s a huge range, but every single one of those kids is a sexual being in my fantasies
Fixed it.
^ why would any of this be part of a school classroom curriculum run by the state?
Because most people will not reject freedom unless they can be convinced that it is a threat to their very existence. Marxism succeeds where people demand to be controlled.
And yes the guy looks like a pedophile.
Chris Hansen: Come and have a seat. Have a seat right over here...
This is as good a place as any for the annual reminder that "Presidents' Day" doesn't even fucking exist. You would think that anyone calling himself a libertarian could at least get the name of the holiday right.
Of course, had these fugazi libertarian dickbags of Readon been around in George Washington's time, they would alnost certainly have supported the British regime and then fled on up to Canada after losing
They would've screamed about moving to Canada all the time while merely staying put and whining. The more things change...
Not so much; there was still a bit of dueling, and a lot of tar and feathers back then.
Tar and feathers...
Now there's an idea whose time should return.
It would take years to write the environmental impact statement - - - - - -
Ackshuyally, all holidays are “made-up” holidays because all governments and all religions and all institutions are man-made, M'Lady!
*Tips party hat, Valentine's Rose-festooned fedora, green St. Patrick's fedora, Easter crown of thorns, Summer fedora, Labor Day hard-hat, black Hallowe'en fedora, Pilgrim's hat, Yamulke, and Santa cap.*
Refusing to call the holiday by its proper name and disrespecting the legacy of one of the most important men in American history feels deliberate, like another salvo in the lefties' ongoing endless war against America, its history, and its heritage.
Which of course is exactly what it is.
All of that could be true, but my point was that "It's a made-up holiday" is not a valid argument, since they're all "made-up.".
Ad agencies have a Field Day *Ahem!* making up special Days to promote products.

Anyone else find it interesting that Jeffy posted 7 articles from Salon and 2 from Slate, both of which are well-known as progressive/Woke publications? Last time I looked, libertarians usually don't follow either Salon or Slate. What's next for Jeffy, NYT or WaPo links, or are the too far right for his taste?
Why would you think that Zero Hedge and Fox News should be considered trustworthy libertarian sources?
I post from various sources, and find some rather interesting for discussion. However, most of mine trend far more libertarian than Salon and Slate.
You post from right-wing and wingnut conspiracy sources.
I'm providing some balance.
Please cite how you're making "balance".
As Sandra points out jeff links to articles praising Biden as dark Brandon. He can't find a single cite from me or ML doing the same from trump. Jeff just wants to dismiss any non leftist site. He calls JustTheNews right wing, but has never been able to dismiss an actual factual item from those links.
It is jeff projecting more than anything.
He can’t find a single cite from me or ML doing the same from trump.
lol you repeatedly cite right-wing echo chamber articles
You got a link for that?
I’m providing some balance.
LOL! Sure you are, Robespierre.
Great, now he’ll be posting links from The Jacobin.
You, Jesse and ML routinely link to the "dumbest man on the internet".

So you went and found a Daily Beast hit piece, chock full of Daily Beast and Media Matters links. Yes, Pluggo, you are so totes not a Democrat.
Step up from his "google didnt say something" defense.
It's turd; one lie after another.
Media Matters is non-partisan.
Their formula is this:
1) cite stupid video/audio of some outlandish claim/lie
2) link to reputable source debunking claim/lie
Lol. Bookmarked for next time you claim you are unbiased.
Goddamnit, Pluggo, I'm eating lunch and almost spit my wrap onto the screen when I read that. Media Matters non-partisan. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
https://www.allsides.com/news-source/media-matters-bias
Media Matters is transparent about its bias. On its About page, it states it is a "progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media."
That AllSides website ranks Reason as right wing, on par with the New York Post or the Post Millennial.
Reason:
https://www.allsides.com/news-source/reason
AllSides sometimes receives feedback from community members who dispute Reason's bias rating; some say Reason deserves a Center or Lean Left rating, or that its biases are not accurately captured by our 5-point bias rating scale. But because Reason's coverage generally reflects perspectives favoring small government, deregulation of private business, and individual liberty, principles typically associated with the right, we give Reason a Lean Right rating.
You can also vote there and let them know how you think Reason's bias should be rated.
For a contrast, here's Salon:
https://www.allsides.com/news-source/salon
Salon has a far left bias in its daily reviews of domestic politics and provocative cultural topics. The American Journalism Review described Salon's political views as provocative and liberal, while many readers have noticed a uniquely progressive, Northern California style in the website’s content.
AllSides seems fairly balanced in its assessments, looking at a few others.
And the Daily Beast:
https://www.allsides.com/news-source/daily-beast-media-bias
All reviewers on the multipartisan panel noted a clear Left bias in news content published by The Daily Beast. In its politics section, it claims to be “non-partisan, but not neutral.” Many stories display sensationalist tags, such as “Ok Boomer,” “Did Nazi That Coming,” and “Freako.”
Coverage consistently framed former President Donald Trump negatively, including several instances of opinion stated as fact. An article titled, “Trump Blasts Out Racist Attack on Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin” claims that “Trump has gone on a racist screed against his political foes,” showing criticism of the former president in a way right-leaning voices often do not. Similarly, an article titled, “Trump’s Candidates Fell on Their Faces. Is This the Final Straw?” is heavily critical of the GOP, claiming that “Trump himself, of course, has defiantly resisted any accountability for his role in the midterm disappointment.”
Slate:https://www.allsides.com/news-source/slate
In September 2018, AllSides conducted an Editorial Review of Slate. We decided to move Slate’s bias from a Lean Left to Left.
The AllSides team found that Slate never includes a Right-leaning perspective on its website, making it unbalanced. Opinion pieces on Slate are often labeled news, making it unclear to readers what is fact and what is opinion. In its news reporting, Slate often uses subjective and emotional words.
This is (and Salon) is what Jeffy is posting and then claiming he’s “independent” and “neutral”.
According to a 2014 Pew Research study, a clear majority of Slate's audience (76%) is left-of-center.
Jeffy is so totes "not a Democrat".
Snopes:
https://www.allsides.com/news-source/snopes
We reviewed the numerous instances of Snopes' left-wing bias that we found during our June 2020 Editorial Review, such as slant. We also noted a number of times that Snopes had recently interpreted things in favor of the left, including when it "fact checked" a subjective opinion on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), when it defended Gov. Andrew Cuomo by saying an accurate tweet about him was "Mostly False," and when it "fact-checked" satire from humor website The Babylon Bee (an entry Snopes then had to edit following criticism).
"Media Matters for America (MMfA)[2] is a politically left-leaning[3] 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization and media watchdog group.[4] MMfA was founded in 2004 by journalist and political activist David Brock as a counterweight to the conservative Media Research Center.[5] It is known for its aggressive criticism of conservative journalists and media outlets . . ."

turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.

turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
At 10:13 AM I pointed out that jeff's behavior is usually indistinguishable from a garden variety #Resistance progressive, even mentioning his fondness for Salon. About 30 minutes later he spams half a dozen Salon links with none of his own commentary.
This is not the behavior of someone interested in productive discussion.
It's like every time someone calls Reason's leading CRT advocate a leftist, he responds in the most childish way: "Oh YEAH? You think THAT was leftist? You ain't seen nothin' yet! Check THIS out!!!"
What do you think the endless barrage of right-wing garbage links here represents? "Productive discussion"? Oh gee, let's have one more link from Jesse or InsaneTroll from idiotbart.com about how Biden is an evil fascist. That's totally productive, right?
If you think my posting of Salon/Slate links makes me indistinguishable from a garden variety progressive, then what do you think of Jesse et al.'s posting of foxnews, zerohedge, dailywire, etc., etc., links makes them?
And if you are so interested in "productive discussion", then why are most of your comments nothing more than trolling and mockery? Hmm?
Fuck off. Your schtick has been spent and you are just no more than a Tulpa around here anymore.
Oh yes, Jeffy, I guess it's all Resistance!(TM) for you. Unfortunately, your Resistance!(TM) is nothing more than than Pluggo's #DefendBidenAtAllCosts.
Great insight. There are people here who obviously lean right. And there are even at least 2 people who are such hopeless Trump dead-enders that they diagnose me with "TDS" (or resort to lazy sexist insults) when I say Trump is a bad candidate and Democrats would love to run against him in 2024.
That doesn't change the fact that spamming a half dozen Salon links in a few minutes is not a good faith attempt to start a conversation.
"Fuck off. Your schtick has been spent and you are just no more than a Tulpa around here anymore."
That really hurts coming from someone who was apparently jealous of all the negative attention Buttplug gets, and decided to steal his routine - "I'm a principled libertarian whose libertarianism compels me to behave like a partisan Democrat most of the time" - and wrap it in a more scoldy, humorless package. 🙁
Part of the defense of libertarianism is in pointing out how equally anti-liberty the two main parties are.
While you denigrate one and praise the other to high heaven.
BTW, remember that turd lies
Equally. Lol.
First you constantly defend the left. Second they aren't equal in how bad they are towards liberty.
That doesn’t change the fact that spamming a half dozen Salon links in a few minutes is not a good faith attempt to start a conversation.
You're right, IT WASN'T! It was to provoke you all into admitting that you are totally fine with insane right-wing agitprop posted here on a daily basis but must reach for your fainting couch whenever someone posts something that is to the left of Ted Cruz.
There are people here who obviously lean right.
Oh no no no no no. You don't get off that easy.
You called me a "garden variety progressive" because I posted a bunch of Salon links in a few minutes. Which by the way I haven't ever done before, and I don't make a habit of it.
But when the usual suspects around here not only posts walls of right-wing content not just today, but EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY, the most you can bother to say about them is that they "lean right"? ROFL
How about this: They don't just "lean right". They are outright mouthpieces for Team Red and the Republican Party. They are pushing partisan right-wing nonsense because they are indistinguishable from your typical right-wing election-denying vaccine-denying ignorant moron. THAT is what they are. They don't merely "lean right". They are propaganda tools.
"You called me a “garden variety progressive”
Well he was wrong, because you're a genuine fucking Nazi in the historical context of the word.
"because I posted a bunch of Salon links in a few minutes."
You earlier compared posting Salon and Slate to posting Foxnews, Zerohedge, Dailywire, etc., but a far more accurate comparison for Salon would be to Infowars, The Unz Review and Der Stürmer.
I do love how you and Jeff can call everyone pointing out your bullshit as right wing. But never call any of you sycophants as left wing. Hilarious.
The only genuinely left-wing people around here are Tony and american socialist (but haven't seen him in a while).
Everyone else, is either libertarian or right-wing.
The people that you and your crowd routinely label as "left-wing" are really just pre-Ron-Paul libertarians. You know, people who actually did oppose both parties, rather than just pretend to do so while openly pushing for 99% of one party's platform like what Ron Paul did and his followers do.
"there are even at least 2 people who are such hopeless Trump dead-enders that they diagnose me with “TDS” (or resort to lazy sexist insults)"
Love to see that midwitted "analysis" and AWFL nature on full display.
Let's review the intellectual standards established by Trump dead-enders like you and Laura Loomer: Everyone knows GOP allowed for @KariLake’s election to be stolen. GOP only *allowed* DeSantis to win to take Trump out. Kari outshined Ron in 2022, & she’s actually LOYAL! I bet deep down, Kari knows this is true. PS: How come DeSantis was silent over Kari’s race being stolen?
"DeSantis won by 19 points which made Trump look bad!"
"DeSantis' victory actually doesn't count because he demoralized Florida Democrats so severely they didn't bother to vote!"
"Also DeSantis raised way too much money!"
"Lake lost and is loyal to Trump which is all that matters!"
"The best candidate to run against Joe Biden is the one who already lost to Joe Biden!"
"Trump is a whopping 3 years younger than Biden - that's a huge contrast in the eyes of voters!"
"Reports of Trump's sky-high disapproval numbers are just a liberal media fabrication even though the same articles also note Hillary's sky-high disapproval!"
That cover everything? Did I do a good job summarizing the "Trump > DeSantis" case?
'I’m a principled libertarian whose libertarianism compels me to behave like a partisan Democrat most of the time.' This is all of the 'moderate' and left-leaning sorts here, to include the staff and the commentariat at volokh.
The response to my Salon/slate links was exactly what I thought it would be. Complaints about how "I'm a leftist". If posting links from Slate/Salon makes me a "leftist", then what does endless continual postings from Foxnews, NY Post, Daily Wire, Zero Hedge, etc., make? Hmm?
Yep, Jeffy's so totes not a Democrat folks.
Website Run by ‘Dumbest Man on the Internet’ Helped Fuel Trump’s Effort to Cancel Democracy
Referring to PJ Media (see link above from Yahoo)
Yes, so says the dork who posted it from the Daily Beast.
"(see link above from Yahoo)"
"Asawin Suebsaeng, Adam Rawnsley - Daily Beast"
Lol, oh Pluggo.
I like how they defend against websites by citing criticism from leftist cites. It is hilarious.
Did I mention that turd lies? It's all turd does
Anyone else find it interesting that Jeffy posted 7 articles from Salon and 2 from Slate
What's interesting about a leftist regurgitating leftist propaganda?
Because Jeffy claims he's a libertarian when he's so far left and so authoritarian that he's decidedly a Democrat.
He has in the past admitted to: being a globalist, being a post modernist, defended 2+2=5, supported social democracy, pretended social libertarianism (leftist socialism) is libertarian, discussed bears in trunks, defended WEF and OpenSocieties, etc.
the office itself should be returned to the functionary role it was historically intended to serve.
I'm completely in agreement with this. On the condition that the bureaucracy is eliminated. As head of the executive, the president is essentially the sole means of public control over the bureaucracy. And weakening the power of the presidency, without weakening the power of the executive branch, leaves control of everything to an unelected, unaccountable, mandarinate. And, as much as one might detest Donald Trump or Joke Biden, it's probably better to have them in power than rely on the tender mercies of Anthony Faucci, James Clapper, John Bolton, or the gangs over at the Pentagon or Foggy Bottom.
Dude; Over 1/2 the population cannot even understand why the USA isn't a Democratic Nazi([Na]tional So[zi]alist) - Empire. With such an awesome Commie-Education the 'public' (Gov-Guns) utilities has served; you're going to need a lot more than one article to make them understand that the President isn't a King.
All you Neo-Nazi and NAZI types run to the right wing party in every country (Republican in US, National Front in France, BNP Britain, etc)
Far-right politics in the United Kingdom have existed since at least the 1930s, with the formation of Nazi, fascist and anti-semitic movements. It went on to acquire more explicitly racial connotations, being dominated in the 1960s and 1970s by self-proclaimed white nationalist organisations that opposed non-white and Asian immigration. The idea stems from belief of white supremacy, the belief that white people are superior to all other races and should therefore dominate society.[1] Examples of such groups in the UK are the National Front (NF), the British Movement (BM) and British National Party (BNP), or the British Union of Fascists (BUF). Since the 1980s, the term has mainly been used to describe those groups, such as the English Defence League, who express the wish to preserve what they perceive to be British culture, and those who campaign against the presence of non-indigenous ethnic minorities and what they perceive to be an excessive number of asylum seekers
You got a link for that, Pluggo? Never mind, I found it for you. It's straight from Wikipedia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right_politics_in_the_United_Kingdom
Wikipedia links to the sources.
Are you saying the National Front is not far right?
And anyone can edit Wikipedia so it's not quite the authoritative source that the links can be. Not so sure why you linked an article about the UK when TJJ2000 was talking about the US, a completely different creature when it comes to "left" versus "right".
As linked above, reading Shakespeare makes you far right in Britain.
Sure sure dumb*ss; The US Republicans are all about National Socialism…. /s
Leftard PROJECTION 101.
... because that's what my media-indoctrination brain teaches me... /s Baaaahh, Baaaah...
In United States politics, the terms "extreme right", "far-right", and "ultra-right" are labels used to describe "militant forms of insurgent revolutionary right ideology and separatist ethnocentric nationalism",[167] such as Christian Identity,[167] the Creativity Movement,[167] the Ku Klux Klan,[167] the National Socialist Movement,[167][168][169] the National Alliance,[167] the Joy of Satan Ministries,[168][169] and the Order of Nine Angles.[170] These far-right groups share conspiracist views of power which are overwhelmingly anti-Semitic and reject pluralist democracy in favour of an organic oligarchy that would unite the perceived homogeneously racial Völkish nation.[167][170] The far-right in the United States is composed of various neo-fascist, neo-Nazi, white nationalist, and white supremacist organizations and networks who have been known to refer to an "acceleration" of racial conflict through violent means such as assassinations, murders, terrorist attacks, and societal collapse, in order to achieve the building of a white ethnostate.[170]
Weird how you claim organizations based on socialism and formed by democeats, like the KKK, are right wing. Almost like your bullshit is biased.
Need the statements in Wikipedia bias again? It has been well discussed here.
Democrats were the pro-slavery conservative party in the 19th century as you know.
Party labels are worthless.
"Far right" will never change in meaning. It means a "preferred race, class, ethnic group". Which is why the KKK and Nazi Party is far right.
"Democrats were the pro-slavery conservative party"
LMAO... So your argument is; Democrats = Republicans???
I'm not sure thought conflict is going to help your stupidity.
The left changes the meaning of far right whenever it is convenient. See the repeated Southern Strategy talking point. They declare Greenwald, Taibbi, and others far right. It is a corrupted term of the left. One you constantly use as you are also of the left.
Hey now; That’s just a “far-right conspiracy-theory”…./s ???? Democratic halls of justice; giving it meaningless “names”…
"Socialism is the doctrine of liberation for the working class. It promotes the rise of the fourth class and its incorporation in the political organism of our Fatherland, and is inextricably bound to breaking the present slavery and regaining German freedom. Socialism, therefore, is not merely a matter of the oppressed class, but a matter for everyone, for freeing the German people from slavery is the goal of contemporary policy."
You want to guess who wrote the above in 1932, Buttplug?
Whoops! What's this Shrike?
Why We Are Socialists - Joseph Goebbels
Golly, there goes your narrative.
You can't be stupid enough to believe that Jews were given "according to their needs".
You must really like the Confederacy and racism. Which are both socialist according to you.
And let me guess; Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat and Andrew Jackson was a Republican??? UR so F.O.S. its not even funny.
"You can’t be stupid enough to believe that Jews were given “according to their needs”.
You can't be stupid enough not to realize that historically socialism is never universally applied.
And you can't be stupid enough not to have read my citation before commenting. Oh wait, you don't even read your own fucking citations, why would you read someone elses?
"You must really like the Confederacy and racism. Which are both socialist according to you."
You must really like strawmen, because I've never said that.
The Confederacy and racism were both integral parts of the Democratic Party however, and I dare you to deny it.
turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
At this point in time, anyone to the right of karl Marx is considered far right.
German history; National Socialists (right) vs Full-Fledged Communists (left).
They didn't have a prayer in a two party system like that one.
As always, this fantasy essay can only come true if the two party system is eliminated. The only way Congress will ever "un" cede their Constitutional authority is if they actually represent their consitutuents - ALL of us, not just the two parties and their reluctant adherents.
Sure, sure; because *all* of us voters obviously honor the Constitution. /s
I think you're trying to jump a few steps there.
Reason should append to the title: "No matter which party is in the White House"
Good news...Biden is in Kiev.
He can remain there.
Gone to collect his ten percent.
The bagmen were too scared so the Big Guy had to show them how it's done.
It's still officially known as Washington's Birthday, why call it something else? Because we want to honor Millard Fillmore?
Or James Buchanan, or LBJ. 😛
And it’s not as if Washington is primarily being honored for being President. He’s honored because he won indpendence for the U. S., so there’d be a country for him to be President of in the first place.

Did President Ordain Arrest of Israeli Over Hunter Biden Investigation?
"Ynet reported that Mr. Luft’s attorney, Mordechai Tzivin, claimed that his client’s arrest “was politically motivated and an attempt to silence him for providing incriminating information in a corruption case allegedly involving Biden’s son, Hunter.”
Mr. Tzivin said that “the arrest came four years after Luft cooperated with FBI and Department of Justice investigators to help them with information about the case.” He added that the meeting took place in 2019."

Don't be surprised when they graduate to the inevitable: promoting literacy is white supremacy. They are well on their way to destroying public education, but it would be much easier to do away with all pretense.
Pol Pot was far too rash, far too crass in rushing toward the same end.
Remember the GDI from last week?
https://www.allsides.com/blog/global-disinformation-risk-assessment-shows-media-bias-against-right
It’s good to want to be aware of misinformation and disinformation. But GDI’s methodology is flawed. It lacks transparency about the reviews and the biases of individual reviewers. It also evaluates media bias and information quality together in a confusing fashion.
In addition, GDI’s ranks showed bias against right-rated sources by potentially downplaying the risks of false content from other outlets. AllSides has previously documented high-profile instances of several of “low risk” sources publishing false or misleading claims.
Like other attempts to rate credibility, the GDI rankings appear biased in favor of mainstream, left-rated sources and against right-rated sources.
You could have knocked me over with a feather.
Of course.
And now that's been shown to be bunk expect to see Shrike, Mike, JFree and Shillsy quote it like gospel two or three years from now.

We’re already reminded every day that the Presidency is filled by an absent minded, doddering senior citizen, who wasn’t all that sharp 20 years ago either. So no one should be under any illusions about how great the office is.
He isn't that great in his 80s, but frankly he wasn't that great in *the* Eighties.
I remember two thoughts I had while watching Biden’s performance during the Clarence Thomas hearings (during which he accusingly held up a copy of a Reason Magazine interview):
1. “Man, this guy is belligerent and obnoxious!”
2. “Where the hell is his upper lip?!”
It's not that Bork was ideal, it's that if the Democrats defeated him Reagan might feel obliged to nominate someone worse - which is ultimately what happened.
To him, dwarf tossing has a meaning different than what it is to the rest of us.
