Detroit Woman Sues City After Police Officers Shot Her Dog and Left It in a Trash Can
Tiffany Lindsay says officers never contacted her to let her know they shot her dog. Instead, a neighbor found it in their trash can.

A Detroit woman filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city today after police shot her dog and left it in a neighbor's trash can.
In a complaint filed against the city of Detroit and an individual Detroit police officer, Tiffany Lindsay says her Fourth Amendment rights were violated last September when the officer entered her enclosed backyard without a search warrant and shot her pit bull, Jack.
As Reason previously reported, Detroit police were searching for a carjacking suspect on the night of September 4 when an officer and his K-9 unit entered Lindsay's backyard, peeked into a doghouse and, unsurprisingly, found a dog.
According to a police report filed in the incident, Lindsay's dog lunged at the officer and K-9 unit, biting the officer on the forearm and tearing his pants. It also bit his K-9 unit. The officer hit the dog with his flashlight several times before drawing his gun and killing the animal.
But it's what happened next that had Lindsay demanding an apology from the police. The next morning, Lindsay's neighbors informed her that her dog Jack had been dumped in their trash can.
In an interview with Detroit TV news outlet WDIV Local 4, Lindsay said she wanted an apology and answers from the police department. "That was my K-9, my protector, that my best friend," she told the news outlet. "He was my emotional support dog."
Police records obtained by Reason show that a post-shooting investigation by the Detroit Police Department cleared the officers involved of any violations of department policy. According to the investigation summary, a lieutenant on the scene knocked on Lindsay's door to try and contact her, unsuccessfully, and also tried to call the Department of Public Works to remove the dog's body, also unsuccessfully since it was after hours.
"Rather than leave the destroyed animal in view of the public, specifically the owner, Lieutenant Guntzviller decided to place the destroyed animal into a courville trash container," the summary says. "The destroyed animal would remain there until such a time that the Department of Public Works was open/operating."
Police arrived the next day to retrieve the dog's corpse.
However, Lindsay's lawsuit says that officers never knocked on her door that night. Her suit alleges that the warrantless search of her backyard, the shooting of her dog Jack, and the dumping of the body in a neighbor's trash can were all violations of her Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures.
Lindsay's case is the latest in a string of lawsuits against Detroit police for wantonly killing dogs. In 2015, the city approved a $100,000 settlement to a man after police shot his dog while it was securely chained to a fence.
A 2016 Reason investigation found Detroit police had a track record of shooting dogs during drug raids. Public records obtained by Reason showed that one officer on the department's narcotics unit had shot more than 80 dogs over the course of his career.
In 2018, Detroit paid $225,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by Kenneth Savage and Ashley Franklin, who claimed Detroit police officers shot their three dogs while the animals were enclosed behind an 8-foot-tall fence—all so the officers could confiscate several potted marijuana plants in their backyard.
In 2019, Detroit agreed to pay $60,000 to Nikita Smith, whose three dogs were shot by a Detroit narcotics unit during a marijuana raid in 2016. That same year, Detroit police shot a family dog in front of a 9-year-old boy, and a woman filed a civil rights lawsuit alleging Detroit police yanked open her door and then shot her two dogs when they ran outside.
In 2020, the city doled out another $75,000 to settle a dog shooting lawsuit after body camera footage contradicted the officer's claims that two dogs were lunging at him and barking when he shot them during a drug raid.
Detroit is far from alone in generating these kinds of suits, though. Just browse the "puppycide" tag on Reason's website, where there are decades of stories about police killing family pets.

Didn’t look it up first: which political party has majority control of the Detroit city government?
The Mises Caucus? No? I'll have to look it up.
Amazingly, and I was shocked when I did look it up, but the mayor and all nine councilors belong to the same political party.
sarc will be by shortly to blame the policing problem on Republicans.
Amateurs. In St. Louis, we have the mayor and all 26 aldermen belonging to the same political party.
In March, the number of aldermen gets cut in half to just 13, based on a citizen initiative that passed last year, but don't worry, they've voted to double the pay for the half that remain!
Pikers. Chicago has the mayor and all 50 aldermen belonging to the same political party, as well as the President of the Cook County Board.

The problem is police culture, not the party in power.
Staff that report to me do as they are instructed or they will be staff that previously reported to me.
“Sorry they fucked up. I never course corrected or established clear standards nor did I ever terminate anyone that engaged in this behavior previously. Not my fault. It is due to the culture!”
Blaming culture is a cop out. Culture doesn’t hire, train, pay or conduct performance reviews.
When Freddie Gray was murdered, woketesters went to the hipster neighborhood near the stadiums to express their anger when they should have been at city hall.
*fart*
Blaming culture is a cop out. Culture doesn’t hire, train, pay or conduct performance reviews.
When they all have the same training, the same incentives, go to the same seminars, and belong to the same national organizations, then what you end up with is a culture.
If you chose to hold the people in charge unaccountable, and in this case they are all Democratic Party members so no surprise that you are doing that here, then this likely will continue. I would be shocked to find this behavior as some formal training or acceptable practice. But you know “textbook” and watched a tv show.

And who can do anything about "police culture"? Wouldn't that be "the party in power"? You know, the people who control their purse strings, that pass laws (or don't) requiring police accountability, etc?
Shooting dogs that are not actively attacking is in-you-face meanness meant to demonstrate the actor can do what he wants, law and right be damned, and there’s nothing you can (legally) do about it. It seems five-figure judgements/settlements haven’t changed opinions and policies down a One Police Plaza. For the next year lets try six-figure judgements. And if that doesn’t work, seven-figure judgements could be tried. I’d be willing to wager there is a price for poochicide that, when high enough, will stop it except in the case of actual attacks.
The Kitty Cat party? Vindictive bunch!
This is Reason. Everything gets blamed on Republicans.
Zero sympathy for anyone who owns a murder dog. Garbage dog for Garbage people.
All Pit Bulls should be fixed, there should be heavy prison time for any breeders, and the breed needs to die out.
WOW!
Either the only people you know are drug dealers or dog fighters, or you are ignorant of dog breeds.
The UKC gives this description of the characteristic of the American Pit Bull dog: "The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm.
This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.
The problem with pit bulls isn't the breed of the dog. It's the breed of the people who own them. You can take the trash out of the trailer, but you can't take the trailer out of the trash.
No, it's the breed.
JFC that is such propaganda it's amazing. None of that is true of course, and I can't believe you actually believe any of it
Dogs bred for bloodsport over generations have no place in society. They are not 'nanny dogs' and never were.
Last time I looked at the numbers, German Shepherds were responsible for more injuries. The problem is people, not canine genetics.
Look up your stats again. Pit Bulls are responsible for the vast majority of human and pet fatalities, and gruesome injuries.
And no, nipping bites from a little chihuahua doesn't count. We are talking about real damage.
No other breed is like this. They were bred to kill bulls and bred to fight. It's one one murders a baby because someone sneezed...

Old English Bulldogs were bred for bull baiting. That practice ended in 1835. Aggression against humans was undesirable even in fighting dogs.
American Pit Bulls were never bred for bull baiting and any hint of aggression towards humans is not tolerated.
Absolutely.
I just made up a bunch of nice things.
Or maybe that is direct quotes from the breed standard of the United Kennel Club.
Your choice.
I read that article and it is complete bullshit, no pun intended.
These dogs were bred for generations to be fighting dogs. They are not nanny dogs, and they are unique compared to other dogs in their aggression, capacity for damage, and their uncertainty factor.
That breed has a switch that could just go off. There's a reason why a normal dog gets hit by a porcupine and disengages. Not a Pit Bull. They will just keep going and going. They will chew threw fucking metal as they are killing themselves just to get that kill instinct. Look at any of the weekly fatalities these dogs cause. Bloodsport animals should not exist.
The sick rebranding of then as Nanny Dogs in a 1971 NY Times article started this mess.
That breed has a switch that could just go off.
Kinda like people who just go off shredding the straw men in their own heads and barking about 'garbage humans' ,while muttering something about an article they read from 50+ yrs. ago.
Maybe in their own head, all the aggression makes some sort of sense but, for all outward appearances, they're between rabid and socially maladapted and in need of being put down.
American Pit Bull Terriers have never been bred for aggression against humans or dogs. Any hint of human aggression is considered a disqualifying trait for the breed and will be eliminated. American Pit Bulls have been bred for non-aggression for far longer than many dog breeds have even existed.
Human aggression was also highly undesirable in the ancestral breeds (bulldogs). The only fighting dogs were ever bred for was dog fighting, and that stopped more than a century ago.
Most of the dogs you call “pit bulls” aren’t actually members of a breed, they are just muscular bully-type dogs with short coats. Like all random matings, some percentage of those matings will be aggressive. That’s annoying in a Chihuahua or Yorkie, but it is dangerous in a big, muscular dog.
Dogs bred for bloodsport over generations have no place in society. They are not ‘nanny dogs’ and never were.
What about 'nanny humans'? Garbage humans may keep pitbulls, but they're far from the worst sort of humans out there. I can train a dog not to attack but it seems like every time I think there's no need in modern society for an animal like a pit bull, there's someone, somewhere lurking in the bushes with their nose out of joint about business that has nothing to do with them that convinces me a trainable, socializable, flesh-and-blood woodchipper is a good idea.
I'm going to keep my mixed breed pits and my high capacity magazines and if you feel that's a problem that you need to solve, you're free to fuck around and find out. I keep both for just such occasions.
Ignorant and bigoted, both. That's impressive.
Not quite RAK levels of ignorance and bigotry, though. You're going to have to work some to up your game.
Pit bulls just shouldn't exist.
All the pit bulls I have ever met were happy, friendly animals.
I'm sure you can train pit bulls to be aggressive, but you can train any dog to be aggressive.
The reason pit bulls have the reputation they do is because they became popular with criminals, in part because of their appearance.
Not too long ago my neighbors called the cops about a racoon that was acting strangely. They shudder when they recall the smile on the officer's face while he beat it to death with his club. Be glad cops don't treat dogs like coons.
I see what you did there 😉
Last I heard was the debate going on within various police departments about whether 5.56 mm AP or .357 HP were the preferred rounds for dispatching attacking canines weighing 10 lbs or less. I think there is general agreement that 5.56 mm is the appropriate rounds for "attack dogs" between 10 and 20 lbs., and that BMG .50 AP is necessary for attack dogs weighing more than 20 lbs.
I understand there is still some controversy within the realm of the thin blue line whether they should embed 3 or 4 slugs of the same caliber in the owners of slain canines if the owners have the impudence to protest the shooting of fi-fi, but there is general agreement that it is improper procedure to shoot through the owners to get rounds into dogs that bark at them.
The Chihuahua is the most dangerous dog to the police. Standing anywhere from 5″ to 8″ inches tall and weighting in at the top at a whopping 6 lbs. they pose an imminent threat to the police with their excessive barking. The one good thing I saw from the article was the garbage can burial, considered an upgrade in most liberal cities which generally throw dog corpses in sanitary sewers!
