Brickbat: I'm Sure They'll Do a Thorough Job

The Charlotte, North Carolina, Citizens Review Board has agreed to review Police Chief Johnny Jennings' decision not to punish officers who handcuffed a teacher at gunpoint. The officers were looking for the suspect in a stabbing, a woman the victim identified as Jaselyn Horne. The teacher's name is Jasmine Horne, which is the name investigators entered into their database, leading officers to detain Jasmine Horne. The Charlotte Observer reports the review board rarely finds in favor of citizens, and even when it does, its opinions are only advisory. It does not have the power to punish officers.

Jaselyn or Jasmine—it’s pretty much the same thing, right? There’s an expression that covers things like this: “It’s close enough for government work.”
If this lady didn't want to get cuffed by a gang of government thugs, maybe she shouldn't have had a name that looks kind of sort of similar to the suspect said thugs were looking for. She really only has herself to blame.
Except her name wasn't similar to the suspect's name, it was similar to the victim's name.
No, it was the suspects name. The victim was a man who doesn't appear to be named in the article.
"the victim identified as Jaselyn Horne. The teacher's name is Jasmine Horne"
Nevermind. I was misreading that.
That kind of fits the theme.

Give it another look, perhaps...
The officers were looking for the suspect in a stabbing, [who was] a woman the victim identified as Jaselyn Horne.
"pig" -- "police" -- two letters in common, and it's not hard to collapse some of the leftovers into "g".
Look, when you have to point a state gun at someone you don't have the luxury in that split second of going back in time and doing your job right.
Unless the database also had a description that obviously didn't fit Jasmine, I don't see that the cops who arrested her did anything wrong. However, the police chief should make an offer to the investigators who effed up the name: Pay her recompense voluntarily or be fired for cause.
Or if the police chief did nothing about this, we've found the root cause.

She was in cuffs for 15 min., assuming no damages (she was uninjured), it's what, like 5 bucks each? As a public school teacher, she's probably been paid less to be treated worse. In terms of remuneration, I'm tempted to call it a wash.
They couldn’t even tell if she was a woman or not because they aren’t biologists.
I blame Microsoft and AutoCorrect, and also people who make up first names for their kids.
Jasmine Horne was in handcuffs for about 15 minutes, according to police. During that time officers spoke with her mother and grandmother who confirmed that they had no idea who Jaselyn Horne was.
Somebody check my thinking here: We're about 15 min. of someone sitting in handcuffs, uninjured, away from *Reason criticizing police officers* for typographical errors, right?
The linked story was on the 13th. It's the 22nd. So, no dogs shot by police, kids beaten up by SROs, or mentally disturbed people executed for calling the police for their own protection? Just, they handcuffed someone for 15 min. on a case of mistaken identity?
Hey check this out helpful blog, thanks for helping us! sustainable web design
Her nightmare due to someone putting the wrong first name into a query lasted 15 minutes. Given the millions of interactions of citizens and police and this type of case, this is rare and it was fixed on the spot in 15 minutes. All of us should be willing to put up with 15 minutes to help get victims justice.
So the idea is to hand a loaded gun and immunity from prosecution to illiterate thugs... and send them out for rob someone else's assets. This is what people vote for instead of voting Libertarian.
