Democrats' 'Build Back Better' Bill Is a Federal Power Grab. Americans Will Pay the Price.
The legislation will have a negative impact on the labor supply and send high prices soaring even higher.

President Joe Biden has united the American people—in disapproving of his performance, with 70 percent of Americans disliking the direction the economy is going and over 6 in 10 blaming him for it. The impact of inflation on people's pocketbooks and concerns over the expanding role of government are important in explaining those low approval numbers. A good time to change course is now.
A recent Washington Post-ABC poll asked, "How concerned are you, if at all, that Biden will do too much to increase the size and role of government in U.S. society?" Some 59 percent said they were "very" or "somewhat" concerned, while 38 percent said they were "not so" or "not at all" concerned. I, for one, am glad Americans are noticing the Democrats' power grab.
Government's expansion didn't start with this administration, of course. Both parties are responsible for the continued growth of the size and scope of the federal government that began long before 2020. These parties also joined forces to spend as much as they could on everything related (or not related) to COVID-19 throughout the last year. But today's Democrats are ambitiously pushing the envelope by further enabling the federal takeover of child care, paid leave, energy, and more.
While our previous experiences may lead us to believe that it's politically beneficial for legislators to line people's pockets, especially if voters believe someone else will pay for it, this strategy isn't working so well today. The recent surge in inflation prevents people from getting as much from the cash they received after the passage of $1.9 trillion in COVID-19 pandemic relief legislation. But whether this inflation is the product of our oversized COVID-19 fiscal response, the Federal Reserve's 36 percent increase in the money supply between February 2020 and September 2021, pandemic-related supply-chain bottlenecks, or a mix of the three, it doesn't matter politically when people are hammered with higher prices at the grocery store and at the pump and their rent is going up, especially if their wages aren't keeping up.
It also doesn't help that experts have been wrong about inflation. First, they claimed there would be no inflation. Then, when inflation inevitably came, they said it would be short-lived or transitory. When it persisted, the alleged reason was that prices were catching up to their pre-pandemic levels. Once experts finally admitted that some of the administration's policies may have fueled some of the demand for durable goods and withdrawal of workers from the labor force, which in turn exacerbated the supply-chain issues, we were told either that there was nothing that could be done or that the resulting inflation was the price we must pay for a strong labor market.
All or some of these factors may play a role in the current situation, but it doesn't inspire confidence that no one really knows how long the problem will last or how high prices will go.
So, where do we go from here? Ideally, supply-side reforms to lift housing and infrastructure building restrictions and occupational licensing requirements should be implemented. It starts with not throwing more fuel on the fire with the "Build Back Better" (BBB) plan pushed by the Democrats. While the administration claims the legislation will reduce inflation, Ben Ritz of the Progressive Policy Institute reminds us in The Wall Street Journal that "the 17 Nobel laureates who signed a much-touted letter saying BBB would 'reduce long-term inflationary pressure' did so at a time when they thought the bill would be fully paid for by higher taxes on the wealthy." That isn't true anymore, so this Nobel letter likely lost most of its predictive power.
BBB also will certainly have a negative impact on the labor supply thanks to its many disincentives to work and other regulations. That means high prices in these subsidized industries. Meanwhile, we shouldn't count on spending to stimulate the economy as unemployment is nearing pre-pandemic lows and the economy is already growing. According to the Wharton School's analysis, we should count on the BBB plan's real cost to be $4.26 trillion with $1.56 trillion deficit financed, not $1.75 trillion and paying for itself, once all budget gimmicks are taken under consideration.
By continuing with this legislation, Democrats are signaling that they would rather stoke the inflation flame so they can centralize more federal power even if they risk a painful intervention by the Federal Reserve. That will do little to assuage people's concern about government's growth.

It feels like we are at the leading edge of a war economy. Inflation. Bare shelves. Biden’s war against America is proceeding as planned.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Hanlon's Razor suggests you should never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by ignorance but we're well beyond what can be adequately explained by ignorance, despite Obama's warning to never underestimate Biden's ability to fuck things up. Even if Biden is the anti-Forest Gump and everything he touches turns to shit, there can't be this much shit purely by accident.
Have to break it down to Build Back Better, I guess. Only then will the masses accept a heavier yoke from their betters for stability.

The media spread it in 2012 when PRICES skyrocketed in the Obama Biden Economuc disaster.
INFLATION IN 2012 WAS AT A RECORD LOW according to BLS.

The problem isn't just the amount of money being spent. The problem isn't just inflation. It's also what they're spending it on. If this were about spending money on pork projects, we could cut those programs. If this were about spending on Iraq, we could leave Iraq someday.
The problem with introducing things like universal preschool is that there is no way anybody will ever cut that program once it's in place. Spending a hundred billion on bridges is a one shot deal. Expanding entitlement programs or creating new ones means they will stay open forever.
We couldn't even get Rand Paul to vote to cut $772 billion from Medicaid--when it came time for a vote. There is no realistic way to kill these socialist programs once they're started. The only way to stop them is to prevent them from being implemented in the first place.
The other ways are a system collapse or revolution, which can follow a collapse. Or possibly a Texas or Florida exit the union. All of these seem implausible. As did the collapse of the Soviet Union in say 1986 pre Chernobyl.
Those possibilities may be more likely than either party repealing universal preschool.
When free childcare becomes unpopular with swing voting suburban moms everywhere, that's when the Republicans will repeal universal preschool. When the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association decide their union members no longer want high paying jobs at the taxpayers' expense, that's when the Democrats will decide to get rid of universal preschool.
The only realistic chance we have to kill a socialist program like that is to stop it from being implemented in the first place.
Yeah civil war will be great for the economy. You guys have all the answers. The American people are lucky to have you.
The question was about what needs to happen in order to repeal a socialist welfare program once it's in place. And Chumby's observations were meant to reinforce the observation that it's practically impossible. It isn't surprising that Lord of Strazele can't follow the topic of conversation. His reading comprehension problem may also be part of the reason why he's an ignoramus.
Anyone who disagrees with Ken is an ignorant progressive who cannot learn, cannot be reasoned with, will not change, hates America, and must die.
You might have a point, if either him or Chumby had advocated for civil war, as Strazle tried to claim.
Goddamn man.
Sarcasmic: when the town drunk and village idiot are the same person.
Two jobs! That's why unemployment is low.

I must have hurt his fee fees in my sporadic posting the last few weeks, poor dear thinks I asked him to mute me.
I don't know what you're saying 'Nate, and I don't care. You wanted me to mute you, so I did. Now you can have fun fucking yourself.
You're cool now. Like JesseAz, Mother's Lament and the rest of the insult trolls.
He is cool now.
LoS has never once disproved that theory.
Poor drunken, broken Sarc. Hitting the bottle hard this weekend I see.
Doofus Ken, Lord followed the "conversation" as closely as it deserved. I'd give his resulting sarcastic put down an 8 compared to your dim an unimaginative insult. You get a 3 and that's extra points for the handicapped.
Strudel is a retarded shitweasel. And so are you. You’re both massively stupid.
your comment still only deals with the non sequitur response to his discussion regarding repealing a new or expanded govt give-a-way. You start with an ad-hominem and get less relevant with each following word. At this stage you are only advertising your own bitterness.
Yup. That is exactly what I was doing. Promoting civil war. You caught me. Tucker and my Bushpig friends programmed me like this.
Wow, did you pull something trying so hard to misread the point of Chumby's comment in order to continue to drive your desired narrative?
Let it happen. PLEASE.
Let the corrupt US Govt go.
The States are the United States, not the Seat of Whoredom in DC.
Complete with an actual live whore!
Just get rid of the democrats. Then we can fix things.
"No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth!"
That's why tax cuts are the most effective means of limiting the size of government. The government will never become so flush with cash that it decides to cut spending. The first step in addressing the problem of drunken sailors spending our money is to give them less money to spend.
Great idea! Cut taxes and rack up deficits! So Republican of you!
No Ken, fuck you cut spending.
Rut ro. I just disagreed with Ken. That makes me an America hating progressive. Part of a problem that can only be solved by listening to Sevo and Nardz.
Yeah, cutting spending has really worked out well. Oh wait, that's actually the issue. No one cuts spending. That's the whole point of this thread.
Aren't you supposed to be calling me a leftist based upon things I never said nor did? I thought you were trying to top JesseAz and get muted for being a colossal ass.
I see someone gets really cranky when their schtick gets called out. Sorry, sarc, didn't mean to hurt your feelings.
I know you want to be on mute. It's a badge of honor on these comments. You're not cool unless sarc ignores you.
Just say it. I know you want to be cool.
I could care less. It's just fun watching you go through hyperbolic convulsions when your lack of intellectually consistency keeps getting called out.
Who called me out? You? You're just flailing like a girl in middle school trying to impress the cool kids.
Whatever you need to tell yourself there, sarc.
So you think taxes should just stay high until Congress decides to cut spending?
Should we raise taxes to cut spending?!
P.S. If it weren't for Prop 13, Sacramento wouldn't have spent less. They'd have spent more of our money. The only reason they didn't spend more of our money was because they couldn't get their hands on it.
Of course, there is a difference between state spending and federal spending. The Fed will cover the Feds seemingly to infinity. Not so the states.
"Of course, there is a difference between state spending and federal spending."
Not in terms of the Sacramento spending every penny they get their hands on (through taxes) in addition to whatever they can borrow.
Oh, and didn't the Democrats bail out California and other states in March of 2021?
The government can actually get smaller in a recession. Hundreds of thousands were laid off or furloughed during the pandemic. Holding the line on taxes or cutting them in the face of that is our best hope to shrink government over the long term.
Ken, you don't want the government to get smaller in a recession unless you want it to continue or turn into a depression. Even Republicans know this though they don't admit it. The reason is deficit spending fuels economic growth, a necessary ingredient for getting reelected. Why do you think McConnell and Trump agreed to the pandemic bail outs? Because they care about poor people? Give me a break. Inflation is the price we are paying for paying to keep out of a recession, a tactic that works.
Typical Joe. Spewing bullshit. Government spending is the least effective form of economic stimulus. Especially democrat spending. Which is a dollar for stimulus and ten dollars for payoffs and rewards for their campaign contributors and bundles.
Maybe raising taxes would be the honest and responsible thing to do, instead of your stupid "starve the beast" conservative attitude which is irresponsible and stupid.
Oh no! I disagreed with Ken! That makes me an ignorant, stupid, hateful, mean-spirited progressive with bad intentions!
C'mon Sevo! What do we do with progressives?
I thought you wanted to cut spending? But now you're for raising taxes?
http://bastiat.org/en/government.html
Totally agree. My position is that taxes need to be raised and spending needs to be cut. But that will never happen because one side won't raise taxes and one side won't cut spending.
So, the question is what do you do when the rules of the game are set this way?
That Bastiat guy. What a progressive. Fucking asshole. I mean, Republicans know what's up. They spend and spend and cut taxes and borrow and borrow and borrow and then talk about how awful government is. They're right on track. Everyone else? Well, fuck everyone else. Republicans are smart and responsible.
So, the question is what do you do when the rules of the game are set this way?
Stop electing Republicans and Democrats?
And back to more hyperbolic convulsions, rather than answering a straight forward question. No wonder no one takes you seriously.
Impossible, the game rules won't allow for that. Arguing for an impossibility is not a rational position. Instead, you have to solve the problem within the allotted parameters.
The problem cannot be solved with the allotted parameters. Hello?
McFly?
Okay, so if the problem cannot be solved, what is the next best approach?
The problem will not be solved by voting for Democrats and Republicans, that's for sure.
What's the solution? I don't know exactly, but it does not involve voting for Republicans and Democrats.
Well, since eliminating Democrats and Republicans is an impossibility, you have three choices.
Find an approach to advocate for within the set framework that best nears your goal. Continue to hyperbolically bitch and moan about how everyone is awful and nothing can be done with full-on three year old tantrums and condescension. Or put the keyboard away, go outside, find a good hobby, and enjoy life.
I would suggest you pick either one or three, but I assume you will stick with number two.
Very nice. It's all about me as a person now. The trolls would be proud.
You win. Onto mute you go. You're cool now.
My god man. You really can't see through your own convoluted hatred, can you?
I'm trying to explain to you that sideline bitching about everyone and everything like a child is literally the most ineffectual position that you can take. Rather, taking a consistent, principled approach in order to reach your goals is much better. And if you're not going to do that, then give it up and enjoy life.
You are an example of what is so wrong with our society. You hate spew condescension and vile, you live in marvelous time and for some reason can't stand it. Your interactions are sarcastic, caustic, tantrum throwing, and intellectually erratic. And it's all predicated on you not being able to get you way 100%.
My point is ease up, be part of the solution, or just stop and eliminate such anger from your life.
Fucking classic.
Sarc really wants higher taxes. The rest is a smokescreen. Plus he’s probably drunk already.
"Maybe raising taxes would be the honest and responsible thing to do, instead of your stupid "starve the beast" conservative attitude which is irresponsible and stupid."
The House just voted to massively cut taxes for ONLY the richest people in the bluest cities in the country.
Yes. If taxes actually reflected the cost for the services American received then they would understand the cost and could decide if they wanted the services. Problem now is that we keep taxes too low and people think services are cheaper than they actually cost.
Perhaps the voter should ask what, exactly, we are getting for the money stolen from us at gun point? It's not like anything the government runs is run well.
Of course you think that. We need lower taxes, and we need to gut spending. Most of it is isn’t even waste. It’s flat out intentional democrat payoffs to their supporters.
I remember the late '70s. Good times, good times.
It was a good time to be a kid.

You're such dishonest people. The inflation happened in every country mostly because of the pandemic and the oil cartels and their fixing of the price of oil. There's also been evidence of corporations, who are already earning record profits and have been it seems forever, of using the pandemic as cover to raise prices. Again if you're so determined to slow the economy then tax rich people for crying out loud. Also apparently this fucks over banks and creditors and kinda hooks up debtors but I've never heard that mentioned by this billionaire agenda driven propaganda website. And finally you guys supported that corporate tax giveaway that added a few trillion to the debt so you should be mentioning that everytime you claim a little bit of more money in the pockets of the middle class is a bad thing.
"The inflation happened in every country mostly because of the pandemic and the oil cartels and their fixing of the price of oil."
You're an ignoramus.
Yeah Ken I'm the dumbass it's not the racists, fascists and QAnon nuts you interact with daily on this website.
I didn't say you were a dumbass. I said you were an ignoramus--because you believe that inflation happened because of the pandemic and oil cartels.
It isn't a personal attack. It's descriptive. A swimmer is someone who swims. A singer is someone who sings. An ignoramus is someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, and you don't appear to know anything about what is happening with inflation or why.
Do you recognize any relationship at all between government spending and inflation historically?
You have to recognize the Lord as woke, even if he denies it. Everything is feelings, and his first defense is claiming victimhood. After that, he deflects and gas-lights.
Inflation denialism is an amazing thing.
It makes climate change denialism look absolutely ingenious by comparison.
He’s a dumbass. I’ll say it so you don’t have to.
Sometimes Ken is wrong. This time he is not.
Other than regarding beagles and the War of Southern Aggression, Ken is always spot on.
Beagles are too smart for the doge IQ scale, and the War of Northern Aggression was far more complicated than most people want to admit.
^ See! :p
"Yeah Ken I'm the dumbass it's not the racists, fascists and QAnon nuts you interact with daily on this website."
I suppose this qualifies as a point or an argument somehow.
The road to prosperity is paved with new and higher taxes.
Roads are built with taxes. The tax rates were way higher during the good old days in the 1950s when they built interstate system and set this country on course for all the great shit we have today.
And how much of our taxes actually go there, vs socialist bullshit? How about why our roads are built deliberately poorly to guarantee regular work?
Well, government roads are. The government isn't the only entity that can build a road; the technology is not exactly cutting edge.
Of course, if government wasn't in the road building business we'd likely have fewer roads and our transportation infrastructure would look different. That's not necessarily a bad thing. The people who constantly whinge about Americans refusing to ditch their cars and ride in choo-choo trains instead should perhaps stop bragging about all the roads the government builds.
We can’t have roads without government funded cowboy poetry festivals, crucifixes in bottled of urine, trans surgeries and Biden drone strikes on foreign kids.
You forgot endless government studies telling us that more roads are bad for us.
Oh, you mean when taxes were actually attempted to be spent appropriately. Strazele, it ain't the 1950s anymore. Time to grow up.
"Roads are built with taxes.
What roads are being built in Biden's BBB budget reconciliation bill?
I don't see any roads being built in that bill. It's Green New Deal spending and socialist welfare programs as far as the eye can see!
What's the return on investment of a socialist welfare program? Is it the same as the return on a road in your mind?
Exactly. Roads and bridges are mostly built with user fees in the form of fuel taxes and tolls. Except some electric vehicle drivers don’t pay for the privilege.
Line item budget voting would go a long way to pump the brakes on pork, but I doubt DC would ever go down that road.
Roads are built by Romans.
The Greeks build Bath Houses.
Oh Strudel.
Those naughty cartels with a global monopoly over all accessible oil reserves are totally slowing our strip mining of rare earths in China for 1000% clean and guilt-free electric winged chariots.
Obviously we should tax the rich more, because bleeding money out like a parasite is vastly more productive and fulfilling of a lifestyle choice than allowing people to work... Far more beneficial to the economy to shut it down and lock people away while we shake that MMT money tree.
For the feelz, Brandon.
It's good to know that the laws of supply and demand have been repealed in this new economy, and that it's all about corporate wreckers.
"The inflation happened in every country mostly because of the pandemic and the oil cartels and their fixing of the price of oil./"
Funny how that inflation held up until Biden decided to kill fracking and shut down pipelines.
Such weird coincidences there,
Correction --
The inflation happened in every country mostly because of Nazi-Dictation and 'fiat' supply stuffing being pathetically excused by the pandemic.
There's been a CURE out for OVER a YEAR and basic human immunity is successful 99 times out of 100! And out of that 1-single time 86% of the time it's by those at a RETIRED Age....
But don't let REALITY enter into your thought process; heaven forbid the propaganda be questioned by reality.
So the massive tax giveaway to the rich in Build Back Better that is the SALT exemption - that sits okay with you?
If we got rid of your kind and stopped democrat spending, we would be infinitely better off.
America is getting what 51.3% of the electorate voted for, good and hard.
So much of being a libertarian is about trying to get people to understand the obvious consequences of their choices--before they suffer the consequences.
When Chavez started nationalizing food distribution, we predicted, here in comments, that it would lead to massive starvation in Venezuela. We weren't able to predict that because we're geniuses. It's just that the results of nationalizing food distribution are always the same.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to see progressives try the same thing here in the United States--fully believing that the results would be different this time because they aren't racists.
We told everyone what would happen with ObamaCare and why. Premiums going down for average Americans? Why would they do that under the circumstances of ObamaCare?! No. We're not geniuses. We're just not completely ignorant.
Outrageous spending levels leading to inflation? Well, that may have been the case when racist whites were in charge before! But who's to say that will happen this time? How could anyone know that massive overspending will always lead to inflation? What, do they have a crystal ball or something?
Now if only there was a Final Solution to the progressive problem...
I thought that was what wokeness. Progressives eat each other, until we're left with the One True Progressive.
They've actually formed a coalition. There are 99 Progressives in the House and one in the Senate (Bernie Sanders).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Progressive_Caucus
The one true Progressive is Pramila Jayapal, and she'll probably be the Democrat minority leader when Pelosi retires after the 2022 midterms.
We should probably start differentiating between Progressives and progressives like we do between Libertarians and libertarians.
Ken has made it clear that there is absolutely no possible way to change the minds of any progressive, and that progressives are the greatest threat to mankind. Progressives are terminally stupid. They do not learn. They cannot be reasoned with. They're ignorant. They don't want to learn. They will not change. They vote. They are organized. They are evil. They are intent on destroying the fabric of America. They have bad intentions.
What do you do with people like that? Did I say people? They're not people. They're animals. They're inferior. They're subhuman.

Libertarians have dropped the ball on trying to get people to understand for nearly a century.
And the people who do understand aren’t voting bebautest trying to bring about libertarianism through voting is pointless.
voting is pointless. The vote is irrelevant. It about who holds and changes the RESULTS.

Good lord, I fell asleep in the second sentence of this worn-out piffle. How many times can one political movement repackage their lingering pissy-pants resentment that the federal government had to give rights to minorities when states refused to?
You are not actually arguing against government oppression when you permit states and localities to run roughshod into women's uteri, burn books, impose theocratic sex police, and prop up neo–Jim Crow election regimes.
I prefer to be for freedom itself, not simply the freedom of Charles Koch to pay no taxes on his fiefdom. It's just all so boring and stupid.
Just to be clear here Tony, but it seems to me that your current argument is that states shouldn't exist.
That there should be uniform federal laws applying to all Americans everywhere, and states should basically get fucked.
Am I far off the mark?
I'm for freedom. I don't care which government is violating freedom. In my experience, that's nearly 100% been my state government.
The notion that freedom from the federal government is the only freedom that matters is insane. It's freedom minimalism. The US federal government was necessary to end slavery and Jim Crow and permit gay marriage and do a whole bunch of other pro-freedom things. My state government has spent most of the last half century trying to impose Christian sharia.
I assert that pro-states-rights rhetoric isn't about freedom at all, but about power.
People love the right way wrong way polls because they always make the President look bad. Problem is that the polls never tell you which way the country should be going. That 70 percent of the people think the economy is going bad is not news. What would be news is how many want the government to do more to affect the economy and how many want the government to do less?
There is a baked in 40% that would like anything that President Biden does. That leaves in question what the X-40% want him to be doing? I am guessing that that is not a uniform group.
...or it just says 40% are idiotic parrot bird-brains who can't seem to change their mantra of, "MORE National Socialism will 'fix' it." while their National Socialism continues to DESTROY everything the USA is.
yuh- huh it does!
A) Polls are stupid and non-representative of real life opinions because polls are arbitrary, contain loaded language and do not account for actual opinions (you have to choose from a multiple choice "answer" that may not actually fit your personal opinions, to a question somebody else formulated for you - nothing about this type of polling can be considered even slightly accurate).
b) Polls only take small samplings for their supposed results. They do not represent accurately what people across the spectrum actually feel.
This is a stupid article. It is a opinion piece offering no evidence at all. It supposes many things, none which can be verified as actually being true, but it pretends to present itself as truth, which it isn't, not even close.
Just another example of really crappy media reporting. Don't let the media persuade you, or do your thinking for you, or assume they have ANY idea how you feel about issues, they don't.
"It also doesn't help that experts have been wrong about inflation."
Or they flat out lied. Political science is never wrong.
there is no inflation..

Dictatorships cannot be established without power grabs. Federalizing elections and destroying the economy, and purging the military are three key needs to establish the dictatorship of the left.
