Daunte Wright Shooting a Reminder That It's Not Cops Who Should Fear for Their Lives During Traffic Stops

The truth about traffic stops and violence. The fatal shooting of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop by a police officer and union boss who supposedly can't tell her taser from her gun spawned a rash of demonstrations against police brutality in which protesters were met with more police brutality. It's also opened yet another discussion about U.S. policing—why do we need armed authorities to enforce traffic violations anyway?—and how overcriminalization leads to tragedy. Stupid laws spawn enforcement of stupid laws by trigger-happy cops who have been primed to see much of the American populace as threats to control, rather than people they're supposed to "serve and protect."

One commonly-offered defense in cases of cops murdering people during routine traffic stops is that such stops can be incredibly dangerous for police officers. State authorities and their bootlickers try hard to convince us that police fear and subsequent overreaction during traffic stops is only rational in the face of the extreme danger such stops place them in. Traffic stops very frequently end badly for police, they say.

But it's actually not true that traffic stops are a major source of serious violence against police officers. A paper published in the Michigan Law Review in 2019 ("Policing, Danger Narratives, and Routine Traffic Stops") found the likelihood of an officer being killed during a routine traffic stop was one in 6.5 million.

"It's drilled into police that traffic stop ambushes are routine. They aren't," points out Radley Balko of The Washington Post on Twitter. "They happen, but they're vanishingly rare. And the federal courts' view that stops are inherently dangerous is based on an unscientific survey from 1964."

Those cases are of course tragic and awful. But drumming it into cops to see every stop as his or her potential last has real world consequences. As we've seen.

An officer is orders of magnitude more likely to die of a lightning strike or insect sting. https://t.co/5ozoW2vztT

— Radley Balko (@radleybalko) April 12, 2021

Serious injury to a police officer is estimated to happen in one out of every 361,111 stops, and the estimate for "the rate for an assault against officers (whether it results in injury or not) was only 1 in every 6,959 stops," writes University of Arkansas Professor Jordan Blair Woods, the author of the Michigan Law Review paper.

For the study, Woods reviewed data of "thousands of traffic stops that resulted in violence against officers across more than 200 law enforcement agencies in Florida over a 10-year period." He also developed a typology of violence warning signs:

The typology indicates that a narrow set of observable contextual factors precedes most of this violence—most commonly, signs of flight or intoxication. The typology further reveals important qualitative differences regarding violence during traffic stops initiated for only traffic enforcement versus criminal enforcement.

The study has significant implications for law enforcement agencies and courts. The findings and typology have the potential to inform police training and prompt questions about whether greater invocation of police authority during routine stops for traffic violations undermines, rather than advances, both officer and civilian safety. The findings also lay an early empirical foundation for rethinking fundamental assumptions about officer safety and routine traffic stops in Fourth Amendment doctrine.

In any event, the fact that stops over minor motor vehicle infractions do sometimes lead to violence—against police officers and the people they pull over—presents yet another reason to resist putting police and drivers in direct contact over non-risky matters like expired licenses, a broken taillight, or an illegally hung air freshener.

Everytime you say, "There oughta be a law", you're actually saying, "I wish armed thugs were roaming around using this as an excuse to murder people." Because ALL laws are "enforced" via the implied threat of death: https://t.co/G6L1MRoGgQ https://t.co/HfYsTpkPzg

— Maggie McNeill (@Maggie_McNeill) April 13, 2021

If folks insist on criminalizing or fining drivers for some such infractions still, that could be taken care of with photographs and paper notices, as many speeding tickets are. This would put both cops and drivers in less danger. That we don't operate this way shows how much authorities rely on routine—and often pretextual—traffic stops as a way to search for drugs or find other reasons to harass and arrest people they don't like the looks of.

Why do federal health officials show such disdain for lifesaving drugs? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) want the U.S. to stop giving out the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine because out of the 7 million doses given so far, six people developed a blood clotting disorder.

6 cases out of 7 million people. What a disaster. This is going to get people killed. And it's going to create more vaccine hesitancy. These people don't understand cost-benefit analysis. They keep making mistakes by orders of magnitude. https://t.co/DQdvqoujHR

— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) April 13, 2021

"While the move was framed as a recommendation to health practitioners in the states, the federal government is expected to pause administration of the vaccine at all federally run vaccination sites," reports The New York Times. "Federal officials expect that state health officials will take that as a strong signal to do the same."

Meet Jane Coaston. The Washington Post profiles podcast host and always-interesting libertarian thinker and writer Jane Coaston:

Jane Coaston hates the phrase "the Black community." The 33-year-old journalist always jokes about her next "Black community meeting," mocking the idea that she and millions of other Americans are a monolithic group that might convene regularly on Zoom. Coaston's point is that Black people are individuals, even if they're often not seen that way. "We expect a level of heterogeneity among White people that communities of color aren't granted," she says.

Coaston's own individuality should be unmistakable, particularly among her left-leaning media peers in heavily Democratic D.C. The former political reporter for Vox and MTV is a registered Libertarian who got her start in right-leaning college media and professes "a healthy skepticism of state power." She also happens to be a happily married queer person, a former speechwriter for the Human Rights Campaign, a churchgoing Christian and a fitness buff who works out roughly twice a day. In November, she joined the New York Times, where she hosts the paper's relaunched opinion podcast "The Argument."

      1. Fist of Etiquette   4 years ago

You're talking to someone who thinks more people should be armed, but if cops want to flee from a stop they initiated, knock yourselves out.

        1. diWhite Knightoxide   4 years ago

This article is idiotic on its face.

Cops get assaulted every 7000 stops, grt seriously injured every 360,000, and killed every 3 million. But they shouldnt be cautious. (Now do those stats and other workplace safety).

But black people should be in terror anx assume cops are going to kill them, because of much lower stats. So, by all means, fight and flee is your best option rather than taking a ticket.

But the coup de grace is :

"The typology indicates that a narrow set of observable contextual factors precedes most of this violence—most commonly, signs of flight or intoxication. The typology further reveals important qualitative differences regarding violence during traffic stops initiated for only traffic enforcement versus criminal enforcement."

Ummm, Daute Wright was fighting and fleeing a criminal arrest, not a traffic ticket, so this meets the high danger category the article outlined.

None of which matters, really, as this shooting was accidental, as the result of human error of the worst sort, having a poorly trained Mom out working as a cop.

Which wouldnt have mattered if the suspect hadnt jumped behind the wheel and tried to speed off with cops hanging onto him. So the blame lies ultimately with him for being a dumbass. Black people dont get to voluntarily opt out of arrests

          1. Ben of Houston   4 years ago

One assault in 7,000 stops and roughly 1 in 90 of those results in serious injury. This means an officer can expect to be assaulted once ever 2-3 years. Serious injury would occur in a mid-size department annually. That is assuming we take these numbers at face value, which is questionable, as the article has an obvious conclusion that they wish us to draw. Only 1% of assaults succeed in serious injury seems suspiciously low, and as dWhite mentions, this would be very easy to manipulate results by messing with both the definition of "Serious" and adjusting the classification of arrests.

This is, of course, still several orders of magnitude more likely than death by school shooter. Something that our children are traumatically trained in routinely.

They're in Minneapolis, pushing a narrative for riots. Ukraine is far. Really far. The Minneapolis ghettos are close and familiar. Their 2nd home.
If they went to Ukraine, they would need to learn what is going on before they can report. They don't have the brain capacity nor the language capabilities. Overseas reporting would not match the US reports. They would make US reporters look stupid, because they are. They no longer have actual Journalists, just hacks, much like the buffoon that wrote this tale.
In Minneapolis, they can just support nonsense like "I can't breathe" and "He had air fresheners" and the denizens of the ghetto and their clueless suburban Cucks will soon parrot it and accept it as truth. It will be their battle cry.
The Russians deal with pesky reporters by shooting them. They target them. They send gunships to shoot up any vehicles carrying them. They did this in Afghanistan, they will do it again. I have to say, I prefer the Russian version to the US version where journalism supports arson and looting through false reporting and goads the looting savages on.
The Ukrainian police, the "Militcia, take corruption to a new level. They would provide zero protection to US reporters unless they paid a bribe. If they refused, you would find US reporters floating in the rivers and buried in shallow graves.

    New narrative: LIBERTARIANS POUNCE

    1. Talcum X   4 years ago

When some criminal smashes their unregistered, uninsured car into you, you pay, law abiding citizen! They can just take off every time if nobody is enforcing registration of the vehicles. Drivebys, looting, and general mayhem become much easier. You can just steal a set of plates on your way to "light someone up" if the cops can't use plate readers to pull you over before the crime spree.
No accountability has its issues. Nobody wants the police to chase anyone, that is fine, they can get them later if the car is registered. If it isn't, the bad guy gets away every single time. If you aren't punishing people for an unregistered plate, nobody will pay the fees. The fees are needed for the roads.
Why would we, the taxpayers, accept unchecked lawlessness? Who does that benefit? Certainly not the law abiding taxpayer. It only benefits criminals like this gun-wielding clown that resisted the other day.

Because driving is not a right, it is a privilege. You don't have the right to drive an unregistered vehicle on pubic roads. The vehicles are registered for a myriad of reasons. Until you can personally finance and build the roads you drive on, you are going to have to share the road and cost with other drivers.
You do have the right to privacy in your own home unless you re still living with your Mom.

BREAKING - Iran informs IAEA it will start 60% uranium enrichment from tomorrow. 1,000 more centrifuges to be introduced at Natanz nuclear facility.

If only we gave Iran more money to fund terrorism. Worked last time.

    2. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Natural Uranium ore has about 0.7% U235. Normal 'Low-enriched Uranium', for use in something like a boiling water reactor, is around 3.5 percent, though it can go out to 20 percent for certain LEU reactor fuels. https://www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-cycle/conversion-enrichment-and-fabrication/uranium-enrichment.aspx

USN naval reactors are enriched much higher, 95-98%. But Iran isn't making a nuclear submarine any time soon. They're making a bomb.

Naval reactors are boiling water reactors.

US Naval reactors are PWRs, not BWRs, and---as fucked up as it sounds at first glance---US naval reactors are fueled with highly enriched Uranium. In excess of 90 percent U235, and 93 percent keeps getting mentioned. This paper from NTI, discusses the subject in detail: https://media.nti.org/pdfs/Replacing_HEU_in_Naval_Reactors_Report_FINAL.pdf

Perhaps that'll change with the Columbias? The paper mentions that other navies get away with much less enrichment.

I recall discussing the subject here a few years ago with the poster, "tarran," who AIUI used to work either on submarines or in a CVN's engine room. I wondered how they prevented battle damage from inadvertently creating a supercritical mass, and he mentioned, in as much as he could, that design geometry, borating the water, and other methods were used.

            1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Page 20 of the lengthy pdf is where it gets up to speed on US naval reactor fuels. They crib heavily from Polmar's book on US submarines. I do remember reading online elsewhere before, some master's thesis on the subject of getting away from HEU in naval reactors.

...stop giving out the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine because out of the 7 million doses given so far, six people developed a blood clotting disorder.

Why, that's almost the odds of dying from COVID itself!

    1. Longtobefree   4 years ago

Fun fact; the disease that causes those clots "naturally" (pre-covid) occurs at a rate of 5 per million.
The vaccine rate incidence is less than 1 in a million.

Yet we are supposed to believe the federal government?

      Other fun facts;
1 - getting the vaccine does not give you any "permissions" to ignore the silly-ass restrictions.
2 - All of the vaccines are experiential, being administered under "emergency use" conditions.

A new poll by the Sunday Times finds that a “significant proportion of Brits” say they have enjoyed lockdown, with younger people more likely to say they liked COVID-19 restrictions.

They survey gave respondents a range of answers to measure their like or dislike for lockdown. Over 16 per cent in total said they liked or strongly liked lockdown.

The figures are even more alarming when it comes to young people. 20 per cent of 18-24 year olds said they liked or strongly liked the lockdown, while 22 per cent of 25-34 year olds said the same.

You sure aren't condemning it as usual. Why is that so hard for you to do? Everyone you accused of being a trump cultist easily condemned his authoritarian acts such as the bump stock ban. Yet you can't do it even when it is this obvious.

You are literally worse than the definition you branded "trump cultists" with as they willingly stated where they disagreed. You don't. So if you think others were trump cultists, that makes you a Biden priest.

That's what you don't get, you have to be shamed into not proving you are lefty. And if you aren't, you just keep spouting leftist BS non stop. Just like Jeff, just like Sarcasmic, et al.

You have no issues calling others cultists even when they state their disagreements. You're pathetic.

Well Bud, I am siding with the man that was charged to protect the Capital building. He was doing his duty. I would have shot her too. No question. You can't control a crowd of misfits by hurling harsh phrases at them. Once they attempted to breach that room, they caused him to react with the violence that he is allowed to use to stop them. Those tards were playing a game, he wasn't. Next time, those silly Larpers will listen when they are given a lawful order or they will bring the arms required.

          1. Ginette Stealey   4 years ago

Not only was no one given any orders by the officer who shot an unarmed woman in the face, but there was a 4-man SWAT team with M4 assault rifles standing less than 10 feet behind her you bootlicking piece of shit.

            1. Talcum X   4 years ago

Well Idiot, before she tried to breach into the armed man's assigned post, "She should have armed herself".
Why didn't the Ultra Trumptards avenge her? Because they are gutless. They ran away as soon as one of them got shot. Was Donald Trump there to lead the charge? Nope. These people were duped, suckers, left to hold the bag. "High on da Trump rhetoric"
An assault on a defended building requires speed, surprise, and violence of action, Cupcake. These idiots announced their intentions days before on open forums. They were expected. If they pushed any further into that building, they would have been gunned down anyways. Thankfully, they only needed to see Ashley Whatsherface eat a bullet and they ran. Hardly stoic. Just posers. Like the "Special Ed" version of the Tea Party.
Like most dorks, they thought that their ideas were so popular that they could start an unarmed insurrection and overwhelm the building with numbers. Brilliant. Most of those people were military REMFs that overestimated their fighting skills gleened from their REMF clerk job in the military. Attending a war is nothing like fighting in one.
What did these Larpers achieve for the Republican party? Nothing. What was gained? Nothing. The Republican party lost support with this stupid "insurrection". They looked foolish and unhinged. Most people in their own party didn't support them, nor will they in the future.

Are you saying that she didn't know that she was illegally breaching into the Capital building?Wrong. She was being stupid and thought that there would be no consequences. Well, she should know better. She was in the Air Force. The Air Force guards their equipment with armed men. Some of that equipment is so important, the sentries tasked with protecting that equipment can shoot you for crossing the painted red line on the ground. She, and her pack of misfits, should have known tat the Capital Police are deadly serious about protecting their post, which is much more important than any piece of equipment the military has.
So, raise a glass to Asshole Babbitt, her death will serve as a lesson for any other Larpers thinking of assaulting the Capital again.

It wasn't discussed the next day?

            1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

Maybe because it was an attack by a lone, troubled person, not a mass riot set up at the behest of the sitting President of the United States.

The argument asserted in the article is that Wright should not have been arrested at all. Chuck P.'s comment appears to addressing that, not defending the tragic errors the cops made afterwards.

      6. Ginette Stealey   4 years ago

Unlike trespassing, which you repeatedly said justified shooting an unarmed woman in the face despite a 4-man SWAT team with M4 assault rifles standing less than 10 feet behind her.

        1. MollyGodiva   4 years ago

That traitor was doing much more then trespassing and you know it. Had she not been shot she would have had direct access to Members of Congress.

Those were SWAT guys right? You keep repeating it as if you know exactly who they were. Were they Capital Police assigned to stop entry into the building? No, asshole, they were not. Like most people there that day, they did not know what to do. At least the man with the gun knew what to do. He only had to shoot one, that is about as good as it was going to get for those stupid people. Trust me, there was more armed men waiting and the further those idiots pushed into the building, the harsher the response was going to be.

Communist China is rehearsing the invasion Taiwan. Those Communists do not fear or respect the USA. POTUS Biden said or did nothing while those assholes came to our shores and parroted the same Progressive criticisms (completely illegitimate) to our SecState (who just sat there like a fucking dummy and took it).

When Red China invades Taiwan, will we stand by our ally?

    1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

No. Taiwanese dissidents couldn't be marginalized last year when they were shown alongside pictures of Antifa rioters. Now they can be painted as domestic terrorists and shown alongside the Capitol protesters. China will be allowed to continue the pogroms because we will be busy with our own.

    2. ElvisIsReal   4 years ago

Why not? We stood by while China gobbled up Hong Kong.

    3. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

They're not invading Taiwan. They don't need to. AIUI, give Taiwan 10-20 years, and their younger generation will be asking to hook-up with the PRC.

Taiwan doesn't solve their problems anyway. Not enough arable land, not enough surplus women. Plus, invading Taiwan very likely kills the golden goose of TSMC, plus might cause the depopulation of the Yangtze River Valley. Closer ties to the Phillipines and/or Vietnam, OTOH, helps both.

      1. Claptrap   4 years ago

So if the Chinese do invade, do we just bomb the hell out of their fabs to prevent the PRC from acquiring them? It's clear that we don't plan on actually engaging the PLA.

        1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

I'm guessing if the PRC does invade Taiwan, TSMC's going to fall under collateral damage. Cue Sean Connery quote on things in here not reacting well to bullets. It could always be seized via some sort of special op, I guess. Risky.

Doesn't prevent the ROC from destroying the Three Gorges either. I would, in the ROC leadership's shoes, wouldn't you?

          1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Oh, and the US with this leadership isn't going to do a damned thing Xi doesn't want them to do. Stern letters, and that's about it.

    4. Ginette Stealey   4 years ago

When Red China invades Taiwan, will we stand by our ally?

We already broke our agreements with Taiwan when we acknowledged the CCP as the official government of China and then proceeded to make ourselves dependent on them for production and give them MFN trading status. We ran out on Taiwan 3 generations ago, and with Joe Biden at the helm we will not only not lift a finger to assist Taiwan, but will probably contribute military support to China.

"Protesters" who are "emotionally distraught" over the death of a black man decided to "strive for racial justice" by burning down a local Dollar Tree where poor people in the community went to buy household goods and groceries.

    Makes a lot of sense.

    1. Rich   4 years ago

That Dollar Tree will have to be rebuilt and restocked eventually. Think of the (racially-just) JOBS!!

    2. Talcum X   4 years ago

It is pretty standard. They must have already emptied the Footlocker and burned the Wendy's and CVS. Those stores should glue condoms, job applications, and work boots to their exteriors, it may keep the denizens of the ghetto repelled.
As usual, the libraries are never touched. Libraries are like Kryptonite to these creatures.

    3. Moonrocks   4 years ago

    1. Talcum X   4 years ago

Not enough people have toured the ghetto. They have enjoyed public safety their entire lives and have no clue as to how dangerous life is in US ghettos. They claim to embrace diversity because they have never had to live with it. They go to Saks, not the Dollar Store.

Hey remember when you forgot to log out of your Sqrsly sock because you were drunk off your fucking ass as usual and posted literally the exact same copypasta in two different places under different accounts, then did it again about an hour later after you got called on it?

Maybe if you don't want to get treated like a lying piece of shit you should stop being a lying piece of shit.

          1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I've never posted as anyone other than sarcasmic. Believe what you want to believe, but that's the truth. Tulpa has posted as ' sarcasmic' and said nasty shit in my name, but I've never ran any socks or impersonated anyone.

That's the truth. Not that you care.

            1. Ginette Stealey   4 years ago

No, that's not the truth you lying piece of shit. You got busted. In public. And since you're a pathetic bitch and a sorry excuse for a man and a human being you won't even buck up and admit it and go for the sorry fucking "I was hacked!" excuse like a 12 year old kid whose mom walked in on him jacking off to tranny porn.

This is why you have a criminal record, a failed marriage, and spent most of your life homeless: all by your own admission. Because you're a lying sack of shit and a pathetic bitch who blames others for everything.

        3. JesseAz   4 years ago

Tulpa admits what he does. You lie about it.

          1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Admits? He brags. He's even bragged about socking me and jeff and others on the weekends.

Yet when people accuse him of doing what he brags about, you believe he's the honest one.

I hope you're happy with this pile of shit you've created.

            1. R Mac   4 years ago

And White Knight bragged about stealing my handle to teach a moral lesson. Is that what civilized behavior looks like over at glibs?

              1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I wasn't aware of that. And no I doubt it would be tolerated.

You should try the Glibs. I'd be interested to see how many comments it takes for you to get kicked off. Being that you've never said anything of substance, and only talk shit about people, I'd give you an hour.

                1. Voture   4 years ago

                  no space there either

                2. R Mac   4 years ago

So you want me to join just to get kicked off? Very civilized of you.

I don’t believe I’ve ever met anyone who so easily shifts from victim to aggressor and back again, sometimes in the same sentence.

                  1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Standing by and watching you get the boot for being an insulting asshole is being the aggressor?

                    That's new.

                    1. R Mac   4 years ago

Encouraging me to go there is standing by now?

What a weird fantasy you’ve created sarc.

                    2. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I'm encouraging you to go there because it might bring out a civilized part of you that's been hiding way down deep. That's my fantasy. That you act like a man instead of a child.

You're the one who thinks such a fantasy equals aggression,

                    3.  Tulpa   4 years ago

God you keep running your bitch mouth.

                    7. R Mac   4 years ago

So we’re you lying when you said you want me to go there because you want to see me get kicked off, or were you lying when you said you want me to go there because it might bring out the civilized part of me?

                    8. sarcasmic   4 years ago

                      "PS I’m on Glibs already"

So am I. Say "Hi" to one of my comments. Oh, you can't. Because you're full of shit.

                    9. sarcasmic   4 years ago

If you really think that's some sort of "gotcha" and you troll people based upon things like that, then I really feel sorry for you. That's pathetic. You must be an incredible boor in person, picking on every little inconsistency.

You're right at home here in the Reason comments, for the same reason I'm gone.

They have a lengthy list of rules actually. And considering you just fucked up yet again and replied to a post directed to your sarcasmic handle with your White Knight handle how long do you think you're going to last at a yokeltarian site when you bring over the rest of your socks to DESTROY conservatards with FACTS and LOGIC from Salon.com? Lol.

Isn't sarcasmic big hearted? He feels sorry for the people who catch him out in contradictory statements and make him look like a total and complete cock. That's why he doesn't post on Reason.com anymore, other than his 90 posts obsessively replying to every person in this thread who appears on the enemies list of sqrsly, who totally isn't his sock puppet.

Yup, I did. It wasn't to teach you a moral lesson. It was to try to get more people than just me and sarcasmic to contact Reason IT and try to get spoofing problems fixed.

It didn't work. Reason IT doesn't fix anything or spend any time improving or moderating this site.

I don’t believe rights are natural.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass, lefty.

          1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

What does that WK said have anything to do with what I said? And why are you cherry picking some comment like you discovered gold?

            1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

What does that WK said have anything to do with what I said?

The thing about lacking intelligence is that you really can't help but prove it.

I don’t believe rights are natural, is not just an affront to libertarianism, it is a disavowal of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It is not even 'cherry-picked' as you falsely claim. It was a standalone, unsolicited comment. And it is the revelation at the core of all the things that you and WK and jeffy and your lefty buddies agree on.

I have read enough of your bullshit to know that you would been right at home with the Jacobins, the original left wing. They claimed they were libertarian as well.

              1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

And it is the revelation at the core of all the things that you and WK and jeffy and your lefty buddies agree on.

                You're beyond help.

                1. R Mac   4 years ago

You just showed up out of the blue and praised Dee for being a true libertarian.

The fact that she doesn’t think rights are natural refutes that.

I find it very interesting that you didn’t include someone like Zeb instead.

                  1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I don't even know who this Dee is. And I don't care.

Point is that the Glibs are civilized, while this place is a schoolyard run by bullies.

Being that you're one of the bullies and proud of it, I know you won't be going anywhere.

Oh yes, I've been hanging on all your comments and keeping track of who you call what, so I must be a liar for saying I wasn't paying attention to the pet names you give to people!

Note that NONE of the glibs commenters have dropped in here to say, "Hey, this comment section is a shitshow, if you want a decent community, come to our place!" The only time I've seen any of them pop in since the site went up, it's to shit on Reason.

That community is exclusive and tight-knit for a reason, and here sarc is begging the very guys who wouldn't fit in there at all to start commenting. How long does he think it would take before WK and chem got shat on for their pedantic, passive-aggressive, lefty-boo simpery?

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m noting that you invited the real, civilized libertarians like Dee and Jeff, but not Zeb. It’s a noteworthy distinction when calling out trolls.

Which is weird because if I was just trying to fit in, I’d just say he’s your sock.

                  You’re beyond help.

Right there, fucko. That is gaslighting. I never said that.

It is not a leap to assume you agree with someone you regularly defend and you just invited go storm out with you in solidarity. Now, here you are deflecting, arguing around the statement while never actually refuting it.

You don't have a strong grasp of logic and revert to ad hominem when you fail to make a point. Another trait you share with your aforementioned buddies.

                  1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

"And it is the revelation at the core of all the things that you and WK and jeffy and your lefty buddies agree on."

Just so you know, the ranges I go to have cameras, so if you murder me there there will be video.

                    1.  Tulpa   4 years ago

God you're a sad cowardly little piece of nothing. You did the same shit he's doing and then ran when it got real.

                    2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

That sentence says that myself and others all agree with whatever that revelation was, in this case something about natural rights or whatever.

                      Bullshit.

You are, to this moment, defending the guy that said he doesn't believe in natural rights. That says something about what you believe. You have yet to refute the statement. That says something about what you believe.

Instead of engaging in honest argument, you deflect, condescending to characterize what I proposed was a disavowal of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as "something about natural rights or whatever". That says something about your integrity.

You are a sophist lefty engaged in gaslighting libertarians who agree with the founders of our nation that men are endowed with inalienable rights.

                    3. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

The bullshit about a murder threat is a gaslighter special.

You have rid me of doubt. Now I am certain I am the one that wouldn't come back. You are fucking evil.

"You are, to this moment, defending the guy that said he doesn’t believe in natural rights."

I wasn't part of that conversation.

"Instead of engaging in honest argument, you deflect, condescending to characterize what I proposed was a disavowal of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as “something about natural rights or whatever”. That says something about your integrity."

                      I did all that? Really?

"Now I am certain I am the one that wouldn’t come back. You are fucking evil."

You want to kill me because I wouldn't engage in an argument I was not part of.

You openly admit you want to kill me.

Over not engaging in come argument over natural rights.

                      That's worthy of murder.

No wonder this is the first time I've commented in weeks. And the last for a long while.

Not engaging in an argument upsets people to the point where they literally want me dead.

                    5. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

                      I did all that? Really?

Holy shit, gaslighter, I directly quoted you. You didn't engage my argument. That is the definition of deflecting. Adding "or whatever" to my words meets every definition of condescending.

You openly admit you want to kill me.

Over not engaging in come argument over natural rights.

                      That’s worthy of murder.

I made a snarky comment to someone else weeks ago that you are now representing in a manner bordering on hysteria as a legitimate threat made in context of today's discussion.

It is very difficult to gaslight when the full record is on open display. But thank you for the perfect demonstration that your only purpose for posting is to seek attention.

You called anyone who didn't trash trump 24/7 a trump cultist for 3 years. You often entered threads with unrelated hyperbolic strawman arguments of what you thought conservatives were saying. Youre a leftist fuck.

    4. Ginette Stealey   4 years ago

Lmfao. Just FYI every other leftist shithead like you that ran to Glibs has been banned or left after bleating about how unfair the world is because there's too many "yokeltarians" who don't share their obsession with Trump and fondness for Marxist politics. Most of the founders, who were actual libertarians rather than leftists shills like you, don't even go there anymore because it turned into a right-libertarian echo chamber. When you pull the idiotic shit you pull here on a daily basis where you regurgitate nothing but radical left wing talking points you copped from Mother Jones, Daily Kos, Democratic Underground and Salon you're going to get the shit kicked out of you just as badly as you do here, except that when you retaliate by starting 10 sockpuppet accounts and posting 700-word copypasta with a link to your enemies list on your blogspot account over there you're going to get banned.

Oh and you're still not a victim you drunken child molesting piece of shit. You're a punching bag because you're unbelievably stupid and incapable of substantiating the arguments you copy from the radical left wing opinion sites you frequent. If you think it's going to be better at Glibs holy fucking shit are you in for a surprise. By all means please take all of cytotoxic's "civilized" sockpuppets calling for Apache gunship attacks on Trump supporters, gleefully celebrating a black cop shooting an unarmed white woman in the face, and flogging discredited lies about fire extinguisher murders with you. I might start hanging out over there again just to watch you get your asshole bored out like an oil well by a whole new group of people who hate your fucking guts.

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

        Did you practice that?

None of it is accurate by the way. But still, I'm flattered. That you'd make all that stuff up to counter things I've never said or done. So sweet.

Sorry, but I don't feel the same way. Never thought about you before. Never will again.

        1. R Mac   4 years ago

Poor sarc, you clearly missed all this attention and had to come back just to get some.

You don’t think Jeff, Dee, and Brandybook didn’t already know glib existed?

          1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I don't actually think of you as a dick. More like a loser who goes along to be popular.

Try the Glibs. Try being civilized. You might like it.

            1. R Mac   4 years ago

Classic sarc. Says I’m not a dick, I just act like one because I’m a loser, then tells me to try being civilized.

Have you ever stopped to consider posts like this means you’re the dick?

Sure was. He took that strawman down with a flourish! Never mind that it doesn't describe me at all, it feels good! Fuck yeah!

The irony is that you hate leftists soooo much, and leftist can't be reasoned out of what they feel.

Yet you feel that I'm whatever some asshat says I am, and if I provided certified documentation proving otherwise you'd still believe what you feel.

This is eerily reminiscent of the last time I interacted with KillAllRednecks. I am getting the same super-creepy vibe of a need for validation. Without the threats of rape and murder, of course.

                1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

KAR said he'd stab Chuck in the left temple and string up him and his family.

Is this sudden migration over to the glibs have anything to do with KAR posting the other day that he wasn't going to do that stuff anymore and apologizing?

                    1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

This may come as a surprise, but I haven't been keeping track of what KAR said. However when someone says they'd kill me if we were left alone, I take notice.

Yet you feel that I’m whatever some asshat says I am

You wrote a while back that you didn't take anything seriously and mocked both sides equally, especially the side in power. The only evidence (your own posts), demonstrate no such thing. Now you want to be taken seriously as you dramatically stalk out of the room, a spurned defender of libertarianism?

Can you not identify the fucking poseur in this scenario?

You’re pathetic. No better than the leftists you hate.

You write things because you think they sound dramatic, but they ring hollow when they lack all substance. When have I ever advocated that anyone was a traitor, or guilty of sedition? Said that someone deserved to die? Or shit my pants all over their posts in hopes that no one will respond. Never, asshole, because I am not like them.

Go gaslight some community college chicks, that shit works on them.

            1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

When have I ever advocated that anyone was a traitor, or guilty of sedition? Said that someone deserved to die?

When have I? Oh, I haven't. Perhaps one of the many handles you believe I run said such a thing, but I never did. You're ready to commit murder over lies an innuendo. You need to check yourself. Seriously.

              1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

                1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

People tend to remember when someone says they'd kill them and leave their body in the woods after target shooting.

                  That's pretty serious there, Chuck.

Doesn't matter that I wasn't part of the conversation. I was the subject of the conversation.

This is the most amazingly bitch thing I have ever seen. He knows there's no chance Tulpa can find him, so he feels safe running his mouth.

In 2021 Democrats have raised the minimum wage by: $0.00 / hour

In 2021 Reason.com benefactor Charles Koch's net worth has increased by: $5.02 billion

Numbers don't lie. When there's a Republican President, Mr. Koch loses $5 billion, even if it takes an entire year like in 2020. When there's a Democratic President, Mr. Koch earns $5 billion in a matter of months.

A paper published in the Michigan Law Review in 2019 ("Policing, Danger Narratives, and Routine Traffic Stops") found the likelihood of an officer being killed during a routine traffic stop was one in 6.5 million.

And likewise the odds of a motorist being shot despite cops being armed is just as small. There are million software interactions a year, vast majority peaceful.

So weird how different this narrative is between Babbitt and duante.

One was trespassing. The other resisting arrest.

Cops shouldn't have shot either. But outrage is only regarding one.

    1. JesseAz   4 years ago

The odds of getting harmed increase when resisting arrest. That is the key point most of the narrative is missing. We in fact have cops being shot in normal course of actions.

      https://www.foxnews.com/us/new-mexico-police-officer-fatally-shot-in-the-head-during-routine-stop-in-february-video-shows

There are virtually no cases of suspects being shot who are not resisting arrest. The action that differentiates here is active resistance at arrest when the proper course is to fight in court.

Reason continues to push the narrative though. Binion pushing the lie about air freshners yesterday was fucked up and he didnt apologize, just updated at the bottom of the story when corrections are generally posted at top.

      1. Rossami   4 years ago

Given the overwhelming number of examples where anything down to merely asking what you did wrong and insisting on knowing why you're being stopped is defined as "resisting arrest", we have a right to be skeptical of police claims on that point.

        1. JesseAz   4 years ago

LOL. When information counters your subjective beliefs, you are skeptical. Good work.

    2. JesseAz   4 years ago

But enb believes benefit of the doubt goes to those resisting arrest.

      https://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2021/04/08/suspect-killed-philadelphia-cop-gun-battle-logan/

She would rather cops be unarmed to basically encourage even more resistance against cops.

Again, cop shouldn't have shot her gun. She fucked up. She has training on cross drawing to not pull the wrong weapon. But the kid did resist arrest. He did have warrants out. Ignoring these things is idiotic.

The Taliban is walking out of peace talks with the U.S. backed government in Kabul.

You may have heard Biden saying, on the one hand, that while it would be difficult for the U.S. to leave by the end of April, as Trump's peace deal with the Taliban stipulated, it was hard for Biden to imagine, on the other hand, that the United States will still be in Afghanistan come 2022. This narrative ignores the reasons the Taliban is turning its back.

    1) It would take us about a month to get all our heavy equipment out of the country, and if we haven't started moving that equipment already, the Biden administration probably has no intention of abiding by the withdrawal agreement and leaving by May 1st.

Because Trump believed that getting out of Afghanistan was in America's best interests, we were leaving at the end of April 2020--regardless of other extraneous demands by the U.S. backed government in Kabul. The only thing left for us to do in the agreement Trump signed with the Taliban is to leave, and if we aren't leaving by May 1st, then we're going back to a state of war with the Taliban. The Taliban hasn't targeted a single American since the day Trump signed the peace deal with the Taliban 14 months ago. Expect that to change come May 1st.

    2) Biden's Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, gave the Taliban an eight page list of demands as a condition of leaving, and they included things like constitutional protections for women.

For those of you who aren't aware, the Taliban is an organization of Islamic scholars who exist for the purpose of instituting fundamentalist interpretations of sharia into the government of Afghanistan. If the United States can't leave Afghanistan until the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban becomes feminist, then we can never leave.

The Biden administration knows this, which is why the Taliban, the U.S. backed government in Kabul, and every other reasonable person in the world--excluding the mainstream press--understands that this means Biden has no intention of leaving Afghanistan . . . ever. It's just woke cover for warmongering--much like the George W. Bush administration and the Obama administration.

The parallels to progressive thought here in the U.S. are clear. Biden and the Democrats think their purpose is to inflict their woke sensibilities on the American people using the coercive power of government, and their vision is the same in Afghanistan--using the military. Biden and the Democrats are perfectly alright with forcing Americans to sacrifice our standard of living on the altar of climate change for the benefit of less fortunate people elsewhere in the world, and they have no problem forcing the American people to sacrifice our security, the lives of our heroes, and our tax money--to transform the Islamic society of Afghanistan into a woke paradise for women's rights.

We don't even have an equal rights amendment in the United States!

All of this was foreseeable, and all of this was foreseen. If President Trump had been reelected, not only would we be on our way out of Afghanistan. We might be out of there already. It is not in the best interests of the United States to fight wars of liberation on behalf of transforming other cultures to be woke. That ended in tears for Napoleon. It ended in tears for British colonialism in Africa. It ended in tears for the Bush administration in Iraq. And it will end in tears for the Biden administration in Afghanistan--as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow.

It seems crazy, but Hillary Clinton the Obama administration did more or less the same thing over gay marriage in Russia. They preferred to let ISIS thrive in Syria rather than work together with Putin to destroy ISIS--for reasons like the way Putin treated LGBT in Moscow.

During the asylum crises in the Muslim world in the aftermath of the Syrian revolution, Australia was keeping asylum seekers off the coast while they were processing their asylum claims. The men there were raping the new women and girls that arrived so systematically, that the Red Cross moved all the women and girls to separate islands. The Australian government decided they didn't want to integrate hundreds of child rapists into an unsuspecting Australian society, so the asylum seekers were stuck in limbo. Obama decided to bring them all there to the U.S., much to the delight of the Australian PM. They'd have come to the U.S., too, if Trump hadn't been elected instead of Hillary.

Reason's Jesse Walker wrote that book about conspiracy theories, and how, even though they don't necessarily tell us anything about what's really happening and why, they tell us a lot about what people are thinking. I always thought the Birther narrative was a good example. I don't know or care whether Obama was really born in Kenya or Indonesia or wherever, but the idea that he's from somewhere else is a natural kind of conspiracy theory to emerge under the circumstances.

Obama enters into the Paris Climate accord, not because it's in America's best interests but because it helps poor people in the developing world at our expense. Obama enters into the Iran nuclear deal because he cares so much about the people of Iran--more so than he does about American security. Obama seems to be oblivious to American interests in regards to asylum seekers, even while they're overrunning Europe, initiating random terrorist attacks, turning the governments there anti-immigration, and even cementing Brexit. Obama cares more about asylum seekers than he does the USA.

These were all symptoms of Obama's elitism and his contempt for average Americans, whom he thought to be racist, sexist, homophobic, and xenophobic--rather than because he wasn't an American. On the other hand, it's practically inevitable that a conspiracy theory like that would emerge given his behavior. If he consistently and persistently ignores the interests of Americans, why wouldn't people start thinking that he's not really an American?

Joe Biden has the same attitudes, and he'll eventually provoke a similar response. He cares more about Afghan women than he does about American troops, that's for sure--and, yeah, he'd apparently rather subject the people of Afghanistan to more war misery than surrender control of the country to the Taliban. But his administration is also contemptuous of the kinds of Americans who volunteer for military service. I don't know that widespread fraud during the 2020 election was or wasn't a problem, but even IF IF IF it wasn't, the chances of a conspiracy theory emerging under these conditions about election fraud are virtually guaranteed.

Things will emerge--like Obama sending a palate of hard cash to the Iranians. Regardless of whether Obama being a secret Muslim non-American was true, Occam's razor, that is the simplest explanation, isn't it? Two years from now, the explanation for why the Biden administration tried to wipe out the American natural gas industry won't be dominated by discussions about why doing so was actually in our best interests--just like the explanation that we're staying in Afghanistan indefinitely because it's in our best interests to stay until the Taliban goes feminist doesn't make any sense.

Sure, as soon as you explain why Obama and Biden RAN on ending the wars in 2008 and again in 2012 and never did anything. They gave their friends contracts to build the largest airfield in the world, then abandoned the project without finishing it.

      3. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

Trump expected to win reelection 14 months ago--before the pandemic. And he genuinely wanted to give the Afghan government time and opportunity to come to some kind of accommodation with the government in Kabul. If a bloodbath and refugee crisis (like those that happened in the wake of us leaving Saigon) can be avoided, then that's a good idea.

Also, as there is in any agreement like this, there were things the Taliban were required to do. We don't just capitulate to their demands without getting what we want. We promise to do "a" once they do "x". We promise to do "b" when they do "y". We promise to do "c" when they do "z", etc. Some of the things they had to do was release all the POWs they were holding, and that took some time.

There were two things in the way:

        1) Before the Taliban would release the POWs they were holding, the U.S. backed government in Kabul needed to release the Taliban POWs they were holding. The Taliban released their prisoners in stages, but they completed releasing them all first. The U.S. backed government in Kabul delayed, delayed, and delayed, releasing their final batch of Taliban POWs--because they didn't want the U.S. to leave Afghanistan.

        2) One of the conditions of the U.S. withdrawing from Afghanistan was that the Taliban would need to open peace negotiations with the U.S. backed government in Kabul, but there was a dispute over who the election for president of Afghanistan--and, hence, who would appoint the delegates to negotiate with the Taliban. Neither side had enough support to form a government.

Pompeo (under Trump's direction) went to Afghanistan to clear it up and get the delegates named to the peace conference, and when they failed to resolve the issue (because they didn't want to make peace with the Taliban because they didn't want the U.S. to leave) Pompeo and Trump announced they were withholding all U.S. financial aid to the U.S. backed government in Kabul until two sides resolved their differences and named delegates to the peace conference.

When the United States withdraws from Afghanistan, the U.S. backed government there will probably be exiled or slaughtered--and they know that. They've dragged their heels every stop of the way, which prompted President Trump to threaten withdrawing before the end of the year at one point. The U.S. backed government delayed and delayed hoping that Biden would beat Trump and wouldn't abandon them to the wolves, and that's exactly what happened.

With an election behind him, Trump would have left Afghanistan behind if he'd been reelected. The Taliban behaved as if that were true. Pompeo behaved as if that were true. The Pentagon behaved as if that were true. The U.S. backed government in Kabul behaved as if that were true. Did you not believe that was true for some reason? What do you know that they don't know?

    3. Lord of Strazele   4 years ago

If the Taliban wants a fight, I would fight them the way we fought the Nazis which means destroying their territory brick by brick until every abled bodied man is either dead or has surrendered.

Fuckin' LOL. Ok, tough guy. We've been bombing their country for nearly 20 years now, and we STILL can't get their percentage of territorial control down to a level the Pentagon is comfortable with.

Yes, despite what you may think, destroying the Taliban has NEVER been part of the overall strategy in Afghanistan. Biden's about to cock up what should be a slam-dunk PR move because his people are butt-blasted that Trump might get ANY kind of credit for doing something positive.

      4. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

One of the problems with that theory is that much of the Taliban isn't in Afghanistan. It's in the mountains of Pakistan. And just because those areas are within the borders of Pakistan on a political map doesn't mean that the official government of Pakistan control those mountainous areas. Not only that, but parts of the Pakistan military establishment may be supportive of the Taliban. Osama bin Laden wasn't found hiding in Pakistan for no good reason. Whether he was under house arrest or under the protection of the ISI may be under debate, but that the ISI knew where he was the whole time isn't. Do you plan to go to war with Pakistan? Are you aware that they have nuclear weapons? Are you aware that in some ways, they're allies of the United States against the Taliban? I don't think you've really thought this through.

I maintain that is both in our best interests to leave Afghanistan and it is in out best interests not to go to war with Pakistan.

        1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

"Tehrik-i-Taliban in Pakistan . . . alternatively referred to as the Pakistani Taliban or TTP in short, is a terrorist armed group that is an umbrella organization of various militant groups based along the Afghan–Pakistani border. Most Taliban groups in Pakistan coalesce under the TTP.[26] In December 2007 about 13 groups united under the leadership of Baitullah Mehsud to form the TTP.[2] Among the stated objectives of TTP is resistance against the Pakistani state.[2][27] The TTP's aim is to overthrow the government of Pakistan by waging a terrorist campaign against the Pakistan armed forces and the state.[28] The TTP depends on the tribal belt along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border from which to draw its recruits."

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehrik-i-Taliban_Pakistan

Invading Afghanistan as an act of self-defense after the acting government there harbored and collaborated with a terrorist group that initiated an attack on American civilians is one thing.

Invading Pakistan for the express purpose of liberating their territory from the ideological tenets of a culture that's dominated the area since before Alexander the Great invaded is another thing entirely.

If there's anything more ridiculous than a Republican neocon who thinks the purpose of the War on Terror is to keep fighting until the world's 1.2 billion Muslims finally decide to stop being Muslims, it's probably progressives who in addition to thinking that using the military to change people's cultures in other parts of the world is appropriate--just like they think it's the job of the U.S. government to wage an ideological war on its own people. Jesus Christ, that's the difference between being wrong and being evil. For goodness' sake, the worst thing about the Taliban isn't that they aren't woke. It's that they're willing to inflict their ideology on other people using the military and the government. What's the progressives' excuse?

Because something was the right thing to do in one circumstance doesn't mean it's always the right thing to do in every circumstance.

Even so, I'm not sure the French backed the American revolution because we were woke or even because we believed in liberty--so much--as because we were fighting against their enemy in England.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Alliance_(1778)#Background

The support of the king certainly wasn't about the universal rights of man, even if the rationalization for that support was--among other parts of French society. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. The English were soon at war with the Dutch, the French, and the Spanish I believe.

That was a direct contributing factor to the French revolution of 1789, wasn't it?

The US really is the dumbest empire ever, and it's because of the fallacious idea that the principles of Enlightenment philosophy are universal truths that don't have to be enforced at the point of a gun.

        1. Moonrocks   4 years ago

The principles of the Enlightenment are universal truths that don't have to be enforced at the point of a gun. Which is why we don't need to keep troops in Afghanistan to enforce them at the point of a gun.

The principles of the Enlightenment are universal truths that don’t have to be enforced at the point of a gun.

If someone violates those principles, what is the recourse for the person who suffered?

The Enlightenment was overrated, anyway, as it assumed things about humanity that were entirely based on the narrow scope of ideas rooted in the philosophies of Greek and Roman statesmen.

          We're not the first.

          Napoleon did the same thing.

The English did the same thing with British imperialism--bringing civilization to the world. Their original purpose of their adventures in Africa was to stamp out the slave trade at its source. Heart of Darkness (and Apocalypse Now) is all about the atrocities required to bring civilization, freedom, etc. to the rest of the world.

Alexander brought civilization at the point of a spear.

Anglo-Saxon culture, however, is unrivaled in this regard. I don't think there is any place left on earth that Anglo-Saxon people haven't either invaded or colonized at one point or another--and there isn't any other culture that make that claim. We often do it under the guise of self-defense, too, but we also do invade to save the locals, too. Americans thinking that the Iraqis wanted us to bomb, invade, and occupy their country was by no means unique. The people of African were going to love being British, too!

The British didn't draw the lines on the world map arbitrarily because they didn't care about the expense of the nationalist wars they were provoking in the future.. There was just no reason to worry about such things when all of their territories would eventually just be British in spite of their silly little local cultural artifacts anyway, right? Why would you want to speak Kurdish, believe in Islam, or wear a sari when you could be British?

Oh, and in case you didn't know, everyone in the USA, New Zealand, Canada, and the UK wants to be like Australia, too. Just ask an Australian! I've never seen such a bewildered look as I did when explaining to one my Scottish friends, that just because that's the way they do things in the UK isn't necessarily a good reason to do anything. Canadians think the reason Americans say they don't want to be like them is because we're stupid or jealous. The rest of the world wants to be like New Zealand, too.

Our Anglo-Saxon cultures are fuckin' amazing that way.

I will concede that traffic stops are dangerous for cops. But the danger is other drivers. Almost all cops killed or injured during a traffic stop are hurt by passing cars, not by the people they are stopping.

Think about it. You're pulling someone over on a busy road. You're walking up to that car on the side that is closest to traffic. You're often doing it at night, in the rain or during other conditions of low visibility. And you're inexplicably doing it in dark clothing. I don't usually have good things to say about European police but at least they are smart enough to make their uniforms in bright colors with highly reflective stripes. US cops have this fixation for black, blue (and sometimes brown) that's practically begging to get them hurt at night.

And, by the way, you're giving the cop a complicated job and teaching him to be irrationally fearful of the person he pulled over so he's got no attention left to watch out for traffic. It's no wonder cops get killed in traffic stops. But they're being killed due to their own department's policies that put them in unnecessary danger. Deaths instigated by the person being pulled over are incredibly rare.

why do we need armed authorities to enforce traffic violations anyway?
Every law passed by some legislative body then requires someone to enforce it, and every law has the implication of force. We can bitch about cops and those who do not belong in the profession, or (and?) we can take a hard look at the people who continually pass new laws that by definition result in more interactions between cops and citizens. It would be nice if lawmaking bodies would periodically dedicate time to getting rid of pointless or ineffectual laws. Or we can just blame cops and keep electing the same people in hopes that they'll behave differently.

This latest shooting in Minneapolis underscores another thing. The dangerous speed at which rumors fly and the irresponsible nature of our media.

I was watching coverage on CNN. They were running with rumors from protesters on the street. People were saying that they pulled this guy over because he had too many air fresheners hanging from his mirror and then they just murdered him.

This is the kind of stuff that gets people killed. And they were happy to assist by spreading ludicrous rumors like that.

And it isn't like this is the first time. This happens over and over again. The media still repeats some of the wild speculation from prior incidents as if it was fact. Nobody at CNN or the New York Times seem to mind that getting people whipped up over nothing not only helps energize their partisan base, it also causes serious economic and physical harm to our country.

      Not just CNN.
I'm listening to ESPN radio today, and it's one of the first topics the noon show covers (because the Twins and TWolves canceled games yesterday). They keep repeating how "this happened again", "we have to come together to fix it", "players are thinking about this could be them", "what the community's dealing with", etc. I don't particularly blame the hosts of this show, as they really don't get into the woke narratives much at all (whereas other shows they have bitch constantly about social justice and ncaa needs to make women equal, etc) and ESPN (Disney) will only accept (and order) one party line. But it wasn't mentioned that he was shot resisting arrest and trying to flee. It wasn't mentioned that this is a rare occurrence, or that violent crime is a far larger threat.
It never is. "This could be any black guy, even wealthy pro athletes"... sure, if they have warrants out for them, get lawfully pulled over for expired tags, then resist arrest and try to flee.
Want these things to be more rare and people to feel less threatened?
Then make it a point to advocate not resisting arrest or running, and stop talking about these incidents inaccurately and without proportion.

      1. Cyto   4 years ago

And you left off that it was completely a mistake. Even with all of that, nobody intended to shoot anybody. So there was no grand racist conspiracy to shoot random black people just because of internalized racism. The video was extremely clear. It was a complete screw up.

So the real narrative is that this dude created a dangerous situation for no real reason.... I suppose he panicked when he realized he was being arrested.... The arresting officer did a bad job maintaining control of his subject...... The subject gets back into his vehicle and attempts to drive away... successfully. An officer goes to assist with a taser and does a really good job following procedures except for one thing. She pulls a gun instead of a taser.

That's kind of a big one thing, but there is no way you can assign malice to it, conscious or unconscious.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

The whole "players thinking this could be them" is completely laughable on its face. These are people driving Ferraris and living in million-dollar mansions in gated communities with security guards. Their professional lives are heavily curated to where they can't even take a shit without the team doctor knowing about it. We've seen more current and former professional athletes killed by their own people in the last 50 years than by cops. No, bouncy ball players, the odds of this happening to you is as likely as it is any professional athlete.

In "Juiced," Jose Canseco wrote about how he got pulled over and harassed by a cop because of who he was, and bitched that "Cal Ripken never would have experienced something like this." Dude, Ripken doesn't have to worry about that stuff because he never put himself in a position to do so. When you have a community full of people who are in constant hustle mode, with low future-time orientation and impulse control, you're going to have a situation where the whole social culture is stuck doing the same thing over and over and over again.

          1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

And the thing is, I'm actually inclined to believe his accusers. My suspicion is that he has a fetish that he was indulging, and the team overlooked it because he was their franchise QB.

Yes to the second, though even as stupid as I think the Texans franchise is managed, I can't see them deliberately letting this news out and cratering his trade value.

                    I feel that feel.

The old, and I think permanently gone, poster John pointed out a few years ago that this society really doesn't tolerate people who can't keep up with their paperwork or with petty legal requirements. It came up in a discussion of Lindsay Lohan's travails with the law, versus Michelle Rodriguez, and how she handled her DUI.

Rodriguez didn't fuck around with supervised release, probation, or anything else that would prolong her contact with the California criminal justice system. She made them jail her for as much of the sentence as they wanted to deal with, which wasn't very long. (It's a PITA to jail a celeb.) Then she was done. Lohan, OTOH, kept fucking up: not showing for piss tests, blowing off meetings with her P.O., and generally not keeping up with paperwork. And constantly had cops up her ass because of it.

In the past, our society, if not liking the town drunk or fuck-up, at least stopped trying to make them jump through bureaucratic hoops. There's a certain kind of person who may mean well, but isn't reliable.
Doesn't keep up with things. In the past, those people, and everyone else---mostly got left alone. We don't leave people alone anymore.

Let's also not forget Wright's pending armed robbery charge from February of this year. https://www.thedailybeast.com/daunte-wrights-mom-says-minnesota-police-killed-her-son-over-an-air-freshener-violation?via=FB_Page&source=TDB

Nice how the Daily Beast buries the fuck out of the lede on that one. About eight paragraphs down, you'll find:

Wright also had previous run-ins with law enforcement. According to court records, he was charged with a petty misdemeanor twice in August 2019—once for selling marijuana and another for disorderly conduct. In February, however, Wright was charged with aggravated robbery. He was released conditionally, according to jail records, and was due to appear in court this summer.

The one outstanding warrant for Wright's arrest, Hennepin County authorities confirmed, was issued after the young man failed to appear for a hearing on April 2. The court date was to deal with a gross misdemeanor charge dating to last summer, when Wright allegedly got caught carrying a pistol without a permit and fled from a peace officer.

Reason writers wanted this. Agg robbery charge and yet, out for months pending trial. No mention of bail, either. Definitely, shouldn't have his gun possession rights infringed by it.

I heard there is some stuff going on in Minneapolis. Here's the front page, above the fold story in my newspaper:

Seattle man wonders if his childhood friend is the leader of Q-Anon

Lawrence doesn’t share Ron Watkins’ far-right ideology, and could hardly believe his old friend was associated with such a movement. “He never said anything racist, nothing bigoted, nothing conspiratorial,” Lawrence said.

    1. creech   4 years ago

My paper buried the AP story about Minneapolis in the back pages and left the impression it was entirely peaceful. Some hundreds met in protest, pounded a drum, chanted Daunte's name, and were met by cops who fired gas grenades at them. No broken windows, no looting, no tossing projectiles at cops so I guess that is just Fox News faux news.

      1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Bari Weiss substack has guest article from private school math teacher in the midst of Orwellian/Kafkaesque struggle against imposition of Critical Race Theory by school, and Stalinist crackdown against any dissent.

    https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/i-refuse-to-stand-by-while-my-students

The school bills itself in the "Episcopal Tradition". Its website contains the following paragraph:

"The third and fourth grades read Hebrew scriptures, and the fifth grade focuses on the New Testament. These sacred texts are taught neither as truth, nor as literature. Rather, they are presented as a body of powerful stories that have moved millions over thousands of years and serve as truth to those for whom they are true."

It's interesting that whereas scripture is taught as symbolic and open to interpretation, Critical Race Theory is being taught as unquestionable and absolute. In other words, CRT is taught as a fundamentalist, intratextual enterprise.

      That article is just surreal.

Once again, if you're a libertarian and tired of being shat on by asshats saying you're some other poster, try the Glibertarians.

    https://glibertarians.com/

I'm not an emissary and they'll likely disapprove of this message, but c'mon. These comments are a cesspool run by a gang of conservatard bullies.

Let the trolls have their creation. Go elsewhere for intelligent conversation.

Reason is awash in frightened communo-fascist pests for the same reason the national LP has become a dumping-ground for similar infiltrators. They worship coercion, abhor freedom, and cannot defend their premises or conclusions even to their brother self-deceiving Left&Right altruists. Exposing their similarities and machinations to voters is more productive of freedom than joining their ordure-flinging.

Lol. sarcasmic thinks the Reason.com comments are a cesspool of "conservatard bullies" and flees to the arms of a site that exists because a bunch of people from Reason.com left because Reason.com was becoming too leftist. Holy shit. I really have to start hanging out over there again. It's going to be absolutely fucking hilarious when they run him out on a rail. A site that banned Ken Shultz and John for being too liberal and mouthy. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'd thought he was a separate poster. Been around for awhile. Pre-Trump, and I want to say pre-Obama. Never flagged him as a troll not worth my time, FWIW.

Times like these, I tend to think we're all characters imagined by that autistic kid, staring into the snow globe at the end of St. Elsewhere.

      1. Dillinger   4 years ago

the end of that spectacular series still pisses me off ... the socks I don't care about because it's performance art to me but I really believed zeb was only zeb ... more fool me

Yeah, I've been posting here with the same name since before Obama and I have never spoofed a handle or created a fake personality. I have no interest in the stupid, petty fights and troll wars and try my best to stick to engaging with people who are actually trying to have an honest discussion or debate (though I do sometimes get sucked into the bullshit against my better judgement). I like you, Dillinger, so I hope you are having a laugh and not seriously entertaining this nonsense.

            1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Seriously, anyone who unironically believes that you sock is a used-up dildo. You've been commenting here longer than I have.

              1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Yet when Tulpa, who brags about running multiple socks and impersonating people, says I'm running socks and impersonating people, you further the bullshit and pile on when people say I molest my daughter.

                1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

If you haven't learned after all this time not to respond to Tulpa, that's your problem not mine.

And I never said you molested your kid. Post some links to kiddie porn, like Shriek did, and I'll modify that stance.

                  1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

At this point what does it matter? Tulpa controls the narrative with his dozen socks. People believe what a dozen socks say over and over. He won. This is his cesspool. Don't ask me for soap.

                    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

This is his cesspool. Don’t ask me for soap

Lol. You l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y just outed your sock again upthread because you're a drunk piece of shit who can't keep his bullshit straight. Keep projecting.

By the way I'm not Tulpa and I'm the only who accuses you of raping your daughter. I base that assessment on your many self-confessions that you were not allowed visitation of your children after your wife left you. The only reason that typically happens is when there are credible accusations of molestation.

    2. Zeb   4 years ago

      3. Essie Hoscheid   4 years ago

You only show up in threads where sarcasmic has posted, and always offer a half-assed defense of whatever retarded shit he's managed to post between blackouts. It's coincidental to say the least. Not least because you are literally the only person who ever defends that stupid self-confessed alcoholic welfare queen and claim to be his close personal friend in real life. All I can say is if you're not his sock, he's damn lucky to have a friend with your kamikaze style of loyalty who will drown along with him out of friendship.

  54. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

I realize the above thread where I argued with sarcasmic is long, so here is the condensed version:

He wrote that the comments at Reason were " a wasteland of stupidity" and invited a named few "civilized" libertarians to join him at another site. I pointed out that he invited a guy who stated outright that he didn't believe in natural rights and a guy that believes that refusing to protect someone else is a violation of the NAP, which makes his claims that they are libertarians or civilized spurious. Instead of engaging with any of my arguments, he claimed I threatened to murder him.

    Please don't waste your time. I wish I hadn't.

    1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I pointed out that he invited a guy who stated outright that he didn’t believe in natural rights and a guy that believes that refusing to protect someone else is a violation of the NAP, which makes his claims that they are libertarians or civilized spurious.

I wasn't part of those conversations so I have no comment.

Instead of engaging with any of my arguments, he claimed I threatened to murder him.

You said that if we went shooting, you'd be the only one going home. Anyone can see that means you'd murder me if you had a chance.

      Please don’t waste your time. I wish I hadn’t.

That's why you don't see me here anymore. It is indeed a waste of time.

This is the first time I've logged into this pathetic forum in weeks. Saying I don't post often makes me a liar because I posted often in the last few hours when I was referring to the last few weeks?

I wasn’t part of those conversations so I have no comment.

You were part of the fucking conversation above where I pointed it out and you proceeded to dodge, duck dip, dive and dodge away from repudiating lefties.

Your absolute refusal to argue in good faith is on full display today.

You said that if we went shooting, you’d be the only one going home.

"Based on sacasmic's internet personae, I fear that if we were to go out on a shooting expedition only one of us would make it home."

        Keep lying, Lysander Liam McLiarpants.

I even revised my thoughts on it earlier before you started with the full gaslight treatment. I am now positive you would kill me before I had a chance to decide. Because I am an open minded person and you are an evil little troll.

        1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

What did I say that was a lie? If we met in person you'd judge me on Tulpa's impersonations, not myself. Your mind is made up. Don't pretend otherwise.

        2. KillAllRednecks   4 years ago

If you're so open minded why not explain your religious beliefs to everyone Chuck?

          2. KillAllRednecks   4 years ago

You mean my taint is bait? To the ladies it is!

Because you think I'm baiting you?

Or is it because what you believe is retarded?

            1. KillAllRednecks   4 years ago

Meant to reply to you. See below.

        3. KillAllRednecks   4 years ago

Chuck mormons don't have rights. Anyone dumb enough to believe the bs y'all believe doesn't deserve rights.

It's rich you calling others out for not being libertarian you fucking welfare queen.

          1. Ginette SteaIey   4 years ago

Notice how KillAllRednecks who totally isn't sarcasmic suddenly started calling everyone welfare queens only after I spent months making him cry like a little bitch by pointing out his self-confessed welfare usage?

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I pointed out that he invited a guy who stated outright that he didn’t believe in natural rights and a guy that believes that refusing to protect someone else is a violation of the NAP, which makes his claims that they are libertarians or civilized spurious.

That he invited White Excrement, a poster with deep BLM sympathies, and chemtard, who openly shills for lefties whenever something bad happens to them, shows a complete misunderstanding of the glibs' culture. They're far closer to Ron Paul or Gary Johnson-type libertarians than Zuri Davis or Shika Dalmia types, and a lot of their comment section is devoted to non-political stuff. In addition to that, a lot of those guys know each other in real life so they have an investment in keeping their community low-drama and high-trust.

The minute sarc starts going off about "Trump dick-suckers" is when he finds out how strict the glibs are about membership.

      1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

So the Glibs kicked you out? Not surprised.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I never set up an account there in the first place, dummy.

          1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

Good choice. They have conversations. You know, they like talk and stuff without saying "You're a drunk on welfare who fucks his daughter" to win an argument. You wouldn't fit in.

            1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I never accused you of molesting your kid. And here I thought being a drunk was a libertarian rite of passage.

Your obsession with middle school-style popularity stacks is duly noted, however.

            2. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

What's most amusing about this faux outrage of yours over mean words is that commenters ten years ago routinely joked about this comment section being "Thunderdome" and was getting trashed by outsiders like Popehat for being a dumpster fire, even before Glibs was set up. And here you are admitting that you willingly wallowed in it for all that time.

              1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

I wallowed, sure. In exposing progressive illogic. In using economic arguments to counter populist policy ideas.

Now the comments aren't about ideas, they're about people. If someone says something the middle school kids don't like they're rewarded with a dozen personal insults and strawman attacks. Don't like Trump's trade war? You're a drunk on welfare. Say Qualified Immunity is a problem? You voted party-line Democrat and think that's the magical pill that will fix everything.

There's no exchanging of ideas. It's all bullshit.

I'm glad you like it. Because I won't miss you a bit.

                1. sarcasmic   4 years ago

That's not true. I see your handle and I'm reminded of seeing Ozzy, Steve Miller, Pantera, and other shows. Other than that I lump you in with the rest.

                2. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I wallowed, sure. In exposing progressive illogic. In using economic arguments to counter populist policy ideas.

LOL, get over yourself. Your posts were one, maybe two-line snarks over 90% of the time. chemjeff's posts, at least, are actual arguments based on a specific paradigm. Yours rarely, if ever, reached that stage.

Now the comments aren’t about ideas, they’re about people. If someone says something the middle school kids don’t like they’re rewarded with a dozen personal insults and strawman attacks.

That happened long before the Glibs departed. Look how much people shat on joe from Lowell or shriek.

There’s no exchanging of ideas. It’s all bullshit.

There's plenty of ideas being exchanged. You've just gotten to the point where you didn't like how it was being done anymore, despite participating in it for all this time.

I’m glad you like it. Because I won’t miss you a bit.

Feeling is mutual. Glibs was set up fucking YEARS ago, and here you are crowing because you finally decided to wander over there after all this time and they're temporarily accepting you, pending your own behavior.

                  1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

Where's sarc going to go when the Glibs get sick of his shit and make him have a sad.
I wish he'd clue in that he's not remotely libertarian and he'd be far happier posting at Huffpo.

                    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

sarc is hardly a Huffpo-style commenter, and there are plenty of libertarians who are simps for cheap Chinese shit, think there's no downside at all to unlimited immigration, and are reflexively anti-cop regardless of the circumstances.

Not a lot of them post at Glibs, though.

                  2. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

                  3. Ginette SteaIey   4 years ago

Look how much people shat on joe from Lowell or shriek.

sarcasmic used to be among them. Now he literally defends well-known shreek sockpuppets like Sarah Palin's Buttplug and pisses and moans about conservatard Mean Girls bullying cytotoxic and Tony when people treat the leftist trolls the way they've been treating the leftist trolls since the olden days before registration when White Indian was running rampant.

                3. Ginette SteaIey   4 years ago

A better example would be when you said that BLM riots were 100% legitimate and that arresting rioters during those riots constituted fascism perpetrated by the Trump administration. Or when you said that a much smaller riot at the capitol building constituted an insurrection that justified 25,000 politically-screened National Guard troops to occupy Washington D.C. Or when you spent 4 years chasing Russia collusion fever dreams and rallied behind the "intelligence community" who we now know deliberate lied on a secret FISA warrant to maintain a harassment campaign against the elected president. The very same intelligence community you supposedly hated when it provided the justification for the Iraq war that you opposed. The very same intelligence community you suddenly had no problem with when it provided the justification for the Syria war you supported. You have no principles. Trump utterly shattered whatever was left of your fragile, drunken, lonely, spouse-abusing, child-molesting mind. Your entire worldview now is just partisan talking points. Trump bad. Anything against Trump good. It's been hilarious watching you devolve over the last 4 years from constantly posting your bumper-sticker slogan "principals not principles" and even initially defending Trump's supporters when Reason was going off the deep end to gibbering like a moron about being persecuted by Mean Girls because not everyone fell into your anti-Trump insanity to the point of cheerleading for secret spying based on deliberately fabricated warrants in a star chamber. You're a fucking joke.

OK, troll. Why are rights “natural”, as opposed to being something that tend not to occur naturally at all, and history shows people have had to fight for?

      1. Ginette SteaIey   4 years ago

Either you don't know what the "natural" in natural rights means or you're pretending not to in order to justify your state-worship. Either way it's pathetic, and I can't wait until you bust that out over at what you think is your new circle jerk. Hoo boy.

    5. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

So, you have seen my argument many times and have intentionally chosen to misunderstand it. Got it.

Nothing was misstated. You got your tits in a wringer every time someone crapped on BLM for rioting. That's a hard fucking fact and your pathetic post hoc attempts to deflect from that don't change it.

I’m not a fan or supporter of Black Lives Matter.

Which is belied when you defend them from any and every criticism and agree with every single talking point they publish.

Black Lives Matter has not organized any riots.

Which is demonstrably untrue. You are a lying piece of shit. And you are telling lies in the service of a Marxist organization. That's not something that people do unless they support the organization for whom they are telling lies.

Just like we can infer a lot from the fact that you deliberately lied about Brian Sicknick being beaten to death with a fire extinguisher for almost 2 months after the story had been debunked.

Reason totally misses the point again.....

The only person who put Wright's life in danger was Wright himself. It's no different than had Wright decided to drive 130 mph down a winding road or cut himself and jump into a shark tank.

He's dead because he violently resisted arrest and then attempted to flee the scene. That's it. Yes, the officer screwed up and thought she had a less then lethal weapon rather than a firearm.... but the only reason she had to reach for a taser in the first place was because Wright turned violent. He won the Darwin award for that.

Further, this was NOT about an air freshener, that is a red herring. Wright had outstanding arrest warrants, including one for illegal possession of a handgun. I'm as Pro 2nd Amendment as the next person, but you don't just get to decide whether or not you want to show up to court over a weapons charge. If you don't show up, you are brought in against your will and justifiably so.

This was not a LEO that got trigger happy because someone reached to pull out a license. This was a guy who violently resisted arrest and the officer was attempting to respond with entirely justified less than lethal force but grabbed her sidearm rather then her taser.

You should watch the video before commenting. Or else if you watched it and call that "violently resisted", your head ain't on straight. He hit nobody, kicked nobody, threw no punches, choked nobody, but did stupidly try to get away.

What's wrong with your comment is that the death could have been avoided if police had merely employed time-tested safety procedures: 1. Don't try to handcuff somebody inches away from the open driver's door of their vehicle. 2. Don't leave the keys in the ignition and the engine running while trying to arrest the driver.

      1. Ginette SteaIey   4 years ago

So we're going with the "once he escaped from police custody no force should have been used to apprehend him again until he got busted for his next violent crime" rule? Here's a clue for you dumbfuck: real life isn't a kid's game of tag.

New Mexico with its Libertarian spoiler vote leverage (LP vote% * electoral votes) of 80 just stopped cops from shooting grownups over plant leaves, twigs and seeds--regardless of color. Note the absence of looting mobs, dead and injured. Minnesota, with a 2016 Libertarian spoiler vote factor of 65 still lets politicians order cops to molest, mug and murder people over recreational leaves, twigs and seeds. Note the looting, arson, dead, injured and angry voters who only now realize that another 5% voting Libertarian could have repealed that violent law. Live and learn.

  59. Ezra MacVie   4 years ago

Just like George Floyd, Daunte Wright was a (street-level) drug dealer who had fallen behind in his payments to the cops who were protecting him. He had to die.
"Omigod - I think I shot him!" Pure theater, that. And poor theater, to boot.
Anyone who wants to cut this stuff WAY down will help STOP the drug war.
And the air-freshener war, too (air fresheners absorb the smells of drugs that are currently illegal).

  60. Ezra MacVie   4 years ago

The 20-year veteran who shot Daunte Wright is ready (and qualified) to retire.
That (and the money she was paid) is the reason why she took the fall. And maybe did the deed, too, though we'll never know for sure. She might have "lent" her gun to the dirty doer.
"Thought it was my Taser," my ass. Of course, her 2-decade sterling record helps with the pleas.
What garbage. Same as Green New Deal, Global Warming, the Holocaust, Lee Harvey Oswald, Muslim hijackers - all that stuff.

      1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

        1) Trolls don't believe the shit they write, they write for attention and to distract from real arguments. I don't write anything I don't believe.

        2) What argument?

Why are rights “natural”, as opposed to being something that tend not to occur naturally at all, and history shows people have had to fight for?

That is not an argument, it's a question. One that has been answered historically by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison among others. But here, I will take a stab at the first two.

Free speech is a natural right because it flows from freedom of thought. Even if you put a bullet in someone's head, you will never dislodge a thought.

Self defense is a natural right. If you doubt it, try to strangle a house cat without breaking its neck. When you get back from the hospital, let me know how denying the cat's free will went for you.

        Your turn.

        1. KillAllRednecks   4 years ago

          Mormons don't have rights.

Anyone who believes the nonsense they believe forfeits their rights.

Especially when they try to force their lifestyle on everyone.

        2. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

So, you keep quoting my comment from a long time ago but did you ever stop to ask what I meant by the remark? All I meant is for most people throughout history nobody was going to give them rights — you have to fight for them.

Do you disagree with this observation?

If not, stop arguing when you don’t even disagree with me. And stop misrepresenting my comment as some kind of argument against Jefferson, Madison, or any other 18th century thinker.

          1. Ginette SteaIey   4 years ago

All I meant is for most people throughout history nobody was going to give them rights — you have to fight for them.

That has nothing to do with whether rights are "natural" i.e., inherent. Someone can violate your rights and you may need to use force to assert them. That doesn't change the fact that you have them inherently. You don't believe in natural, i.e., inherent rights. You believe rights are privileges granted by a powerful central state and your worldview and "arguments" if you want to generously call them that reflects that. And now you're trying to backtrack because you've painted yourself into a corner.

          2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

So, you keep quoting my comment from a long time ago but did you ever stop to ask what I meant by the remark? All I meant is for most people throughout history nobody was going to give them rights — you have to fight for them.

            1) February is not a long time ago. Which is also completely irrelevant as your opinion clearly has not evolved.

            2) You posted that comment unsolicited and without explanation. Are you expecting this libertarian audience to believe that turd you dropped in the punchbowl is a misunderstanding?

            3) 'That's not what I meant, you misunderstood' is a fallacy. Specifically, the Motte and Bailey, which I know has been explained to you previously. That you continue to engage in a deceptive form of argumentation after being informed that it is illogical and dishonest points to a) a lack of intelligence, b) willful ignorance, or c) an intent to deceive. If there is another explanation, please feel free to enlighten us.

            4) Because "you have to fight for them" is not a valid justification for the statement you made. After 250 years, I should not have to instruct a fellow citizen that the Constitution does not grant rights, it limits the government. Should a citizen standing before a judge have to justify freedom of speech, or is the judge required to recognize it even in the absence of the argument? Should a citizen have to prove they were defending themselves, or are they innocent until proven guilty? That these rights are natural (i.e., inalienable) is an axiom of the Constitution which was stated outright in the Declaration.

I disagree with you. What you claim was your actual meaning is even more specious, as the natural existence of a right is a predicate to fighting for it.

I question your motivations and your intelligence in posting such drivel in a libertarian forum.

I question why a 'civilized libertarian' like sarcasmic would let it stand without comment.

How not to get your ass kicked by a cop:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj0mtxXEGE8

  69. XM   4 years ago

So in a post BLM world...... cops should just leave their guns in their cars every time they do a traffic stop, or just not pull cars over for broken taillights.

Cops shot less than 20 unarmed blacks in 2018 0r 2019. If that was ALL during traffic stops, then I'd have very little to fear cops during traffic stops. Of course, that's not how Reason would present it. They remained completely blind to skyrocketing murder rates in big cities and ANY violence inflicted upon officers. This levl of slanted coverage belongs in Media Matters.

Earlier this year someone took off the catalytic converter off my car. Yes, you may have heard of that trend. I had not been carjacked in the 20 plus years that I lived in this country

In LA cops stopped giving out parking tickets for a period of time last year. Cars lined up outside of my apartment, well into the red zone, making it impossible to see oncoming traffic when you try to exit the gate. To the surprise of no one, two cars got into accidents trying to get out. Because no one in LA actually drives 45 mph on local streets, one of the cars was totaled. I actually heard the guy moan "help me help me". He died. He was black.

That's just a few experiences in my own life. I'm a person of color, so the notion that not having cops would be damaging to people like me would deflate Reason's narrative. And yet, every poll, crime stats, and DEVELOPING incidents confirm that their policy would be ruinous to us and society in general. Most black people want MORE cops. THEY will die the most when Reason gets their way.

How do writers here whine about not being able send their kids to school but also advocate for a society without police? It's tone deaf.

  70. ckfred   4 years ago

If you aren't supposed to be afraid of the cop, who are you supposed to fear. He has a gun, a taser, a badge, handcuffs, and a Kevlar vest. He's ready to do battle. I'm not.

When I was a practicing lawyer, I had a tiny bit of fear for judges. After all, the black robe gives them the right to find people in contempt.

As a smart lawyer once told me, a judge is God, until a court of review says he isn't.

If you get pulled over, you do what the officer says. You don't call your mother or your lawyer.

  71. dan1650   4 years ago

The statistics and narrative is ridiculous. They need to break it down by where cops are assaulted and shot almost exclusively. 90% of violent crimes happen in a small part of the US and that is where most cops are shot or attacked. Give the statistics using just the number of the cops working in dangerous areas without including areas where a cop has not had to draw a weapon in 50 years where there is no violent crime.

Only in the evil and racist mind of a person who automatically equates Jesus-killer with Jews.

Here is an erudite and well-documented web site...
    http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Do_Gooders_Bad/ ...

    Which specifically states...

“The Jews killed Jesus” say those of shallow understanding. A BETTER, more detailed understanding would be, “First we grew fish brains, and the instincts and emotions than went with them. Then ditto lizard brains, then monkeys, then apes, and human hunter-gatherer brains, instincts, and emotions. As culture-bearing, supposedly fully thinking beings, by now we should have made that post-hunter-gatherer mental, ethical, and moral leap. Jesus (and etc.) was (were) killed by those who couldn’t or wouldn’t make that final leap.”

The ethically advanced ones among us know that always immediately (in “standard operating mode”) taking away the other guy’s dignity doesn’t add to our dignity. The search for dignity is NOT generally a zero-sum game! Yet balanced against that, we do no one any favors when we refuse to criticize people who are wrong! Jesus called them vipers and sons of vipers!

    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/in-love-and-war/201706/why-some-people-resent-do-gooders
