Partisan posturing around the Mueller report continues to suck up all the air in Washington. The House Judiciary Committee was planning to vote this morning on whether Attorney General William Barr should be held in contempt for not yet giving them the full, unredacted Trump-Russia report prepared by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team.

Then the Department of Justice (DOJ) pulled its own power move. In a letter to the committee last night, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd said DOJ would ask President Donald Trump to invoke executive privilege over the full report if the representatives go through with the vote.

Boyd called lawmakers' actions "a transparent attempt to short-circuit the constitutionally mandated accommodation process and provoke an unnecessary conflict between our branches of government. They are also counterproductive."

Citing "unreasonable demands" about access to the report and "the Committee's precipitous threat to hold the Attorney General in contempt, Boyd said that"the Attorney General will be compelled to request that the President invoke executive privilege with respect to the materials subject to the subpoena"

"It's a sharp escalation of the ongoing dispute between the committee and the Justice Department, which spent the day Tuesday negotiating over the House Judiciary Committee's subpoena for the entire Mueller report and underlying materials," writes Rebecca Kaplan at CBS News.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said the vote will proceed as planned.

A Polish woman is facing prison time over artwork that depicts Jesus and Mary with rainbow halos. Police there are accusing Elżbieta Podlesna of hanging posters with the image in the city of Płock. "Now she could face two years in prison for offending religious feelings," reports CNN. Her lawyer told the station that the images weren't meant to insult or desecrate a religious image and Podlesna "has not admitted to committing the crime."

The New York Times takes a deep dive into Donald Trump's 1980s and 1990s finances, finding things "far bleaker" than was previously known:

The numbers show that in 1985, Mr. Trump reported losses of $46.1 million from his core businesses — largely casinos, hotels and retail space in apartment buildings. They continued to lose money every year, totaling $1.17 billion in losses for the decade.

In fact, year after year, Mr. Trump appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer, The Times found when it compared his results with detailed information the I.R.S. compiles on an annual sampling of high-income earners. His core business losses in 1990 and 1991 — more than $250 million each year — were more than double those of the nearest taxpayers in the I.R.S. information for those years.

Over all, Mr. Trump lost so much money that he was able to avoid paying income taxes for eight of the 10 years. It is not known whether the I.R.S. later required changes after audits.

QUICK HITS

  • The latest state to enact a so-called "heartbeat bill," Georgia just banned almost all abortions, declaring that "unborn children are a class of living, distinct person" that deserve "full legal recognition" as "natural persons" under Georgia law.
  • A Denver initiative to decriminalize hallucinogenic mushrooms failed (45 yes to 54 no).
  • The latest Congressional Budget Office report says the federal deficit is up 38 percent over the previous year in the first seven months of fiscal year 2019.
  • San Francisco is banning the use of facial recognition technology by city authorities.
  • Two-thirds of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, say federal health officials.
  • Some Republicans are falling out of lockstep with Trump on trade.
  • Big hotel chains are determined to infiltrate the Airbnb-style homestay market.
  • Is everything a trap?
  • Kim Kardashian is helping more federal drug prisoners get freed.

We did it again! Had the best call w/this lovely family & my attorney @msbkb who just won release for their loved one Jeffrey in Miami - he served 22 years of life sentence for low level drug case. He served too much time but it gives me so much joy to fund this life saving work. pic.twitter.com/pbYicKmFpJ

Hell, those creatures live off the posturing.

      Hello.

Didn't Trump right a book about his losses and his comeback?

      Awesome work NYT.

      1. creech   6 years ago

True, but many voters only hear that Trump, living in the lap of luxury, paid no taxes for eight years while they live in hovels and get by on scraps from the garbage bin at Cheddars, unemployed and working two jobs, and -if female- being groped at work with absolutely no consequences to the male patriarchy.

That would explain why he kept building colorful arcs.

"Oh, you meant "ark," like with a k at the end? What is that? Seriously, has anyone seen an ark before? Wait, it's a what? How big? With a hammer?" [faints]

Yes, new research speculates he filled his ark with same sex animals, Passenger Pigeons, Dodos, Unicorns, etc.

Given how many non-satirical illustrations I've seen featuring two maned lions, it's not really a "new" belief.

Because illustrations in children's books are always indicative of institutional theology.

Over all, Mr. Trump lost so much money that he was able to avoid paying income taxes for eight of the 10 years.

Either he made risky business decisions that didn't pay off or he's a tax cheat. Which is more offensive to libertarians?

    1. Conchfritters   6 years ago

I wouldn’t find either offensive. No one should be paying income taxes, and everyone absolutely has a right to start a company and have it fail. Let the dumbass who keeps lending money to that individual take the risk.

    2. Leo Kovalensky II   6 years ago

Trump finding a way to avoid paying taxes actually makes me like him a little more.

    3. Don't look at me!   6 years ago

    5. Dillinger   6 years ago

Or he used standard depreciation formulas and purchased failing businesses for their on-paper losses.

Lefties hate that Trump had his tax team utilize perfectly legal tax strategies to avoid giving our massively bloated government more money then he had to.

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

Hate is not how you spell jealous.

          1. DesigNate   6 years ago

Why would they be jealous? Half of Obama's cabinet actually owed taxes and didn't bother to pay them.

    7. JFree   6 years ago

Taxes are for little people not libertarians

and anyone in real estate as much as Trump is a complete moron if they pay taxes. WTF is the point of distorting the tax code in that direction?

I'm not exactly sure how this is supposed to be a revelation. Anyone who was alive during that period knows that Trump was on his ass in the late 80s and early 90s. It's why he got so much attention when he finally clawed his way out of it by the end of the decade.

Trump May Redefine Poverty, Cutting Americans From Welfare Rolls

As anyone who has read Mr. Buttplug or Rev. Kirkland's posts knows, people on welfare overwhelmingly vote Republican. So Drumpf is going out of his way to punish his base.

                1. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   6 years ago

Grr, now things are getting even more confusing!

According to "moneyshot" — who we all know was Mr. Buttplug's spiritual successor — the following things happened:

"Conservatives campaigned to have the Buttplug banned."
"For all I know some conservative asswipe in IT made an editorial decision on his own."

This is a complicated issue, I don't blame you for some confusion. But you're a smart person. If you can keep at this you might even be able to use this as your senior thesis topic.

                  2. squid_hunt   6 years ago

Gotta admit, I actually do prefer the Alex Jones CT that he was banned to a lost password.

        Exactly.

When recent American Presidential elections are broken down by voter income, the Republican candidate dominates among the lowest brackets. Then as you proceed up the economic ladder, you find that the more money people have the more likely they are to vote Democrat.

The teen's social media pages indicate that he is an avid guitar player, youth theater actor and registered Democrat who has on occasion expressed disdain for Christians, criticized President Donald Trump and praised former President Barack Obama...A combination of factors, including revenge and anger, spurred the attack, the Denver TV ABC affiliate reported, citing law enforcement sources. One of the suspects had reportedly been bullied over gender identity.

Republicans are not what you think they are. Many "Republicans" are okay with huge government budgets. There are also plenty of fiscal conservatives.

The GOP is in the process of integrating blue collar American workers into their Party. Managed trade will be the norm until Libertarians become the #2 national political party.

That, and when people started noticing that the bonds based on these loans were way more risky than previously thought, Sarbanes Oxley "mark to market" rules basically made them completely worthless instead of merely worth less.

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

They want to leak it so they can continue the trial in the court of public opinion.

Let Congress take it to court. They will get shot down because they have no right to grand jury testimony. If they did get a copy they will leak want they want, and then say the people do not have a right to see the full report.

On the other hand. I would almost like to see them get the full report and give it to the press. Then they will be in damage control for the next two years from the fallout of making the grand jury testimony public.

The Justice Department's Inspector General is investigating possible criminal activity by the FBI in its applications to the FISA court to do surveillance on the Trump campaign. New information became available yesterday about how that investigation is progressing. Of particular interest is the applications to renew those FISA court applications.

"In the last application, the FBI said it didn’t believe that Mr. Steele directly provided the information in the Yahoo News article, even though Mr. Steele had admitted in U.K. proceedings in spring 2017 that he had briefed the reporter.

    . . . .

"In the last renewal application, dated June 2017, the FBI continued to state that it believed Mr. Steele’s information “credible,” given that his “previous reporting” had been “corroborated and used in criminal proceedings.”

    ----Wall Street Journal

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/watchdog-probes-fbi-reliance-on-dossier-in-surveillance-of-trump-aide-11557275757?

This is interesting for a couple of reasons.

    1) The FBI stated in an application to the FISA Court that Steele wasn't the source of a public leak to a journalist--even after Steele Steele admitted that he was the source.

    2) The FBI stated in a an application to the FISA Court that Steele was a credible source--even after the FBI severed their relationship with Steele because he had lost all credibility.

For those of you who can't put two and two together, the FBI doing surveillance on a political campaign is serious business, and it appears that the FBI's justification for doing so was utter bullshit.

    1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

I would be utter surprised if any FBI heads roll. The smart ones who participated and have enough time for retirement, will.

Nothing will happen to the FISA judges who allow the government to run all over the Constitution. To be fair, evidently their was some push back by a judge or two on granting the warrants.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

I suspect the reason the Democrats in the House are trying to go after Barr is because they want to discredit him in the court of public opinion ahead of the findings he reports when the Inspector General's report on this is done--in addition to other ongoing investigations into what the FBI was doing and why.

I might have agreed with you about the likelihood of anybody at the FBI being held accountable for this, but now that the Democrats in the House are smearing Barr's personal reputation, he has an incentive to vindicate himself by holding the responsible parties accountable. The Democrats in the House are making it personal.

        1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Sounds like something Democrats would do.

Lefties have been trying to undermine our constitution via bureaucrats for decades. To have their gains in the FBI and DOJ come tumbling down when the Democratic Party needs them most, really are signs of their demise.

Benchmarks against Socialism in the USA recently include gun rights making a huge comeback and the GOP being very close to the 2/3 states they need to convene an Article V Constitutional Convention of the States.

Thank God, the Founders set up this nation to be a Republic.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

The people or person responsible may no longer be at the FBI.

        Looking at you, Mr. Comey.

Comey already publicly admitted that he knew the Steele Dossier had been financed by opposition research when the FBI submitted the applications.

        1. BestUsedCarSales   6 years ago

Though I question that. I was discussing this a bit with John yesterday, but the idea that this is a single point of failure, i.e. Comey, is largely a means for the FBI to protect it's own ass by creating a scapegoat.

          1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

A scapegoat is often thought of as a patsy, someone who isn't necessarily the person who perpetrated the crime. If Comey is guilty of doing whatever he's accused of, he won't be a scapegoat.

"The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday ruled that the Trump administration can continue to enforce a policy requiring some asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are processed.

The ruling from the San Francisco-based appeals court places a stay on a preliminary injunction on the asylum policy issued by a lower court."

    ----The Hill

    https://thehill.com/latino/442625-court-rules-trump-admin-can-continue-policy-requiring-asylum-seekers-remain-in-mexico

A recent ruling from a California judge that prevented the Trump administration from returning asylum seekers to Mexico to wait for the hearing to approve their asylum status has been overturned.

This ruling only applies while the merits of the case itself are awaiting a ruling, but until they get a ruling on the merits of whether returning asylum seekers to Mexico while they await trial is kosher, the Trump administration can continue to do so.

I see no reason why making asylum seekers who present themselves at our border with Mexico wait for their trial in Mexico should be unconstitutional if the country from which they're supposedly fleeing persecution is not Mexico.
