The 10 Worst Lines in the State of the Union
Listen to me, Katherine Mangu-Ward, and Rep. Thomas Massie explain why on SiriusXM Channel 121 at noon ET
I am hosting the Insight Hour on SiriusXM Insight (Channel 121) all week at noon. Monday I interviewed Rand Paul and Matt Kibbe; Tuesday it was Kmele Foster and Kevin Williamson, and today I'll be talking with none other than beloved Reason Managing Editor Katherine Mangu-Ward and the heavily libertarian Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.). Mangu will talk about why you shouldn't vote, Massie will discuss criminal justice reform efforts on Capitol Hill, and the backdrop all hour will be President Barack Obama's exhausted State of the Union address.
To get that conversation started—and you should damn well join that conversation, by calling 877-974-7487 during the show—here's my preliminary list of the 10 worst lines from last night's speech; please nominate others in the comments:
10) If we want a better politics, it's not enough just to change a congressman or change a senator or even change a president. We have to change the system to reflect our better selves.
9) I have no doubt a president with the gifts of Lincoln or Roosevelt might have better bridged the divide, and I guarantee I'll keep trying to be better so long as I hold this office.
8) This year, I plan to lift up the many businesses who've figured out that doing right by their workers or their customers or their communities ends up being good for their shareholders…and I want to spread those best practices across America. That's part of a brighter future. In fact, it turns out many of our best corporate citizens are also our most creative.
7) The world will look to us to help solve these problems, and our answer needs to be more than tough talk or calls to carpet-bomb civilians. That may work as a TV sound bite, but it doesn't pass muster on the world stage.
6) I told you earlier all the talk of America's economic decline is political hot air. Well, so is all the rhetoric you hear about our enemies getting stronger and America getting weaker. Let me tell you something. The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth, period. Period. It's not even close. It's not even close. It's not even close. We spend more on our military than the next eight nations combined.
5) If you doubt America's commitment—or mine—to see that justice is done, just ask Osama bin Laden. Ask—ask the leader of Al Qaida in Yemen, who was taken out last year, or the perpetrator of the Benghazi attacks, who sits in a prison cell. When you come after Americans, we go after you. And it may take time, but we have long memories, and our reach has no limits.
4) I believe in change because I believe in you, the American people. And that's why I stand here, as confident as I have ever been, that the state of our Union is strong.
3) That's how—that's how we—that's how we delivered more care and benefits to our troops coming home and our veterans.
2) Anyone claiming that America's economy is in decline is peddling fiction.
1) You know, last year, Vice President Biden said that, with a new moon-shot, America can cure cancer. Last month, he worked with this Congress to give scientists at the National Institutes of Health the strongest resources that they've had in over a decade. Well, so -- so tonight, I'm announcing a new national effort to get it done. And because he's gone to the mat for all of us on so many issues over the past 40 years, I'm putting Joe in charge of mission control.

Sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Certainly a tale told by an idiot.
Worst line: "my fellow Americans"
He's Kenyan and at least one of our senators is Canadian.
I turned it on for two minutes and heard Obama say "the threat to us doesn't come from Evil Empires, it comes from failed states!"
Sort of, but it does kind of ignore that global Jihadism is financed by our Saudi allies and it's also monstrously hypocritical for Obama to complain about failed states when his government is supporting the Saudi bombing of Yemen and turned Libya into a killing field.
I have it on good authority that Libya was an example of "smart power" at its very best.
Yeah, but he personally flew to Pakistan, leapt out of a fighter jet, and killed bin Laden with his bare hands.
It's just how justice is done.
"So let's go create some more!"
Best lines were when he said in regard to climate change, you can deny the science, you can say there is a conspiracy, you can throw your hands up in the air, but everyone else in the world is moving on toward solutions. They aren't listening to you anymore.
/sarc
Thankfully, Congress is listening.
I know, that was hilarious!
I hate to break it to you, but your religion is losing popularity.
And that's when Jackand Ace came the closest to orgasm he's ever been in his life.
OMGOMGOMGOMG!!11!!!11!!!ELEVENTYONE!!!11!! JACKLANDASS HEART HEART!!1
I WAS WACHING AT HOME AND I WAS LIKE "HMMM IS THIS TEH BEST STATE OF TEH YUNYUN OR TEH BESTEST STATE OF TEH YUNYUN AND THEN ZOMG!!!! I TOATS FERGOT THAT THERE WAS A BESTESTEST! AND THATS WHAT THIS IS WUN WAZ
ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10 I GIVE OBAMA 1,000,000,000
lolwut
"everyone else in the world is moving on toward solutions."
And they always will be.
So much for democracy, eh?
Democracy in action. It was the man Americans voted to be President not once but twice.
amazing how the solutions are always the same, regardless of the problem: Higher taxes, increased regulation, bigger unaccountable government and less freedom.
Doesn't have to be. The problem for the right and libertarians is getting to the first step, which is recognizing there is a problem, and then you can begin by offering competing solutions.
You're not even at step one. As far as climate change, to them it's a hoax, a conspiracy, nothing to be worried about. To science, much of business, and every other country, you have your head in the sand.
They're not waiting for you to get to step one.
Ok say they admit it. Then what? What is your proposed solution to the problem?
A carbon tax is the way to go. One libertarian site, Niskanen Center, has accepted that as well. There is hope.
First comment:

Your response:

My response:
What is your solution?
Your response:
A carbon tax.
Didn't you just get done saying it doesnt have to be more taxes? I am confused. Oh and didn't australia get rid of theirs?
That's my solution. Doesn't have to be the only solution. What is your solution to the problem of climate change, Frank?
I don't think it is a problem. You are the one who thinks it is a problem so you should be offering solutions that address the problem (abate it) and show that the problem is fully understood.
Why would i offer solutions for something i am not worried about?
You specifically said in response that it would result in higher taxes....doesn't have to be yet you propose....drum roll...higher taxes!!
How much would that carbon tax be and what would be the impact on global temperatures and climate change?
$20 per ton is a good starting point. And carbon tax.org even has a spread sheet for you to determine how much emissions will fall for any tax rate you pose.
http://www.carbontax.org/wp-co.....Model.xlsx
How much is usually output per an individual household? Wouldn't this be a regressive tax on the poor?
Wouldn't the emissions falling be based one's actual income and lifestyle choices? I am not sure how you can determine how much emissions will fall based on a given tax rate.
Anyway let's go with it...what impact will this carbon tax have on the global climate and how did you determine this?
Why did you respond with a "tax" when you said it doesn't have to be a "tax"?
Because I believe that is the best solution. You and the commenter don't like a tax? Fine. Posit your own solutions. It's not a problem for you? Don't complain if those who believe it is a problem didn't wait for you, and proceeded to get their solutions Implemented. It's life!
Why would libertarians offer solutions to a problem that they don' t think is a problem in the first place? That makes no sense. Convince me that it is a problem in the first place.
No thanks. If science can't convince you, I won't be able to.
But thanks for just being part of the group I spoke about. No one is waiting for you to get to step one.
Why is climate change a problem necessarily? How has the science convinced you?
Ok they admit it is a problem. The proposed solutions address and abate the problem in your opinion? If so how did you determine what impact the solutions will have on the global climate?
Because one does something does not mean it solves the problem.
What solutions might those be and would they have any effect? How have you determined the magnitude and severity of the problem such that any solution would make an impact or not?
Getting China to promise they will stop raising emissions by 2030 is not really a solution. To me the Paris summit was just a bunch of get together feel good fluff.
Funneling tax money to green friends is not a solution
Funneling tax money to green friends is not a solution
Some of the solutions are already being implemented. Investment in renewables (the world over), carbon trading (China), fuel efficiency standards, and more.
Paris was indeed part of the solution.
But you and libertarians don't think they will work and you want to offer better solutions? Great. Welcome aboard. We're all ears.
Wind and solar in the United States alone make up < 5% of the grid despite enormous subsidies. They also have to be backed up by fossil fuels or nuclear since they dont work all the time. Fuel efficiency standards are not the same as emission standards. Investing in renewables is does not mean it is a solution if it won't have any impact.
Isn't China and India developing over 1000 more coal plants?
I ask again. Would they have any effect? How have you determined the magnitude and severity of the problem such that any solution would make an impact or not?
We have been hearing over and over that disaster is right around the corner....yet it has not come about and whatever steps have been implemented would not be nearly enough to address the problem that YOU seem to think it is.
Indeed, a libertarian view.
What is the magnitude of the problem and how did you determine this?
Tell you what, Frank. My point was that the President was telling you that everyone is moving forward and not waiting for you. You might find this article from a blog on the law as to what businesses can expect after Paris. You will see that no one is waiting for libertarians to finally come to problem recognition and your solutions.
http://www.jdsupra.com/legalne.....ate-83010/
Moving forward with what? Not waiting for me...what does that even mean?
Who is this everyone moving forward and what are they doing?
China has promised to stop increasing by 2030....that could be any amount. That isn't a solution
Then you have nothing to worry about. No one is doing anything, right? You're good.
Worry about what? Where was this stated?
Typically when there is a problem; one tries to understand what the problem is and present solutions such that they address the problem.
I have seen no evidence that investing in renewables addresses the problem or will even have an impact.
If climate change is the problem it is made out to be, allowing china to keep raising their emissions for the next 15 years seems logically inconsistent.
Doing something to say you did something does not mean the problem is abated. But hey it can make you feel good!!
Wide scale use of renewables meaning much more than there is now brings about its own challenges.
Like I said, no one is waiting for you. And if you are right that no one is doing anything, then everyone must agree with you. You can sleep tight!
Who is waiting for me for what?
Where did i say no one is doing anything? Doing anything means just that...doesn't mean it will have an impact or be successful.
Where did i say no one is doing anything? Doing anything means just that...doesn't mean it will have an impact or be successful.
It doesn't? Then what is your solution to the problem of climate change?
Why would i propose a solution when you are the one worried about it? Remember i am left behind whatever that means.
Third base!
I believe it's a problem, told you some of the solutions ready being implemented, and one Jerry Taylor and I would like implemented, and you say it's not a problem for you. Perfect!
No one is waiting for you, Frank.
Ok i don't care that anyone is waiting for me. I have no clue what this even means. What is the magnitude of the problem and how will these solutions address that problem? What is the impact?
Where is the carbon tax being implemented that you proposed above?
The tax I spoke about is detailed here by a libertarian, lonely though he is.
http://niskanencenter.org/wp-c.....n-Tax1.pdf
A $16 per ton starting point would reduce 9.2 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions over 20 years.
Here are the nations that do have a carbon tax. Just more solutions already being implemented to a problem you don't believe exists.
http://www.carbontax.org/where-carbon-is-taxed/
Is this just the United States?
That would reduce emissions by 0.46 billion per year in the United States. The United States is currently over 5 billion tons per year. That is a 10% reduction....what impact would this have on the climate?
Ok thanks. what is the impact on those carbon taxes on the global climate? Based on the climate change rhetoric, it doesn't seem to be nearly enough.
Ok thanks. what is the impact on those carbon taxes on the global climate? Based on the climate change rhetoric, it doesn't seem to be nearly enough.
Two of the nations in that link had them and were abandoned. 2 others they were relatively small. Sweden has a bunch of exemptions.
Carbon tax is only in its infancy, and not even close here. But it's talked about. China's cap and trade has some similarities.
There really isn't a formula with carbon emissions to a particular degree reduction. But we know ( those who accept science) that carbon in the atmosphere increases temperature. So the goal is to reduce carbon emissions. Sure that's not good enough for you, but to me and Jerry Taylor it is.
What are the "renewable" energies you support? Have you done a pros and cons...perhaps a cost/benefit analysis as well?
Why is climate change a problem?
The Australians definitely are moving on to solutions. Their governement has dropped the entire AGW charade and stooped wasting everybody's money and time.
I'm sure he said it wouldn't pass "mustard" on the world stage.
Passing mustard sounds like it could be a little painful.
Or, even worse, passing mustard gas.
Anal with the wrong girl and you'll be citing the Geneva convention.
'The problem is the and you,not me .If I have failed at anything it is not making you understand how right I am on every topic.I have ended wars,am killing you enemies in many countries we are not at war with and drilled and produced large amounts of oil with my own two hands. The earth is healing and all have jobs and 'health care'.What else do you fuckers want?'
"or the perpetrator of the Benghazi attacks, who sits in a prison cell."
I guess he means the guy who made the Youtube movie that was the cause of those attacks.
"I believe in change because I believe in you, the American people. And that's why I stand here, as confident as I have ever been, that the state of our Union is strong."
So strong in fact, that we need to change.
"That's how?that's how we?that's how we delivered more care and benefits to our troops coming home and our veterans."
FFS does ANYONE really believe this shit????
"This year, I plan to lift up the many businesses who've figured out that doing right by their workers or their customers or their communities ends up being good for their shareholders...and I want to spread those best practices across America. That's part of a brighter future. In fact, it turns out many of our best corporate citizens are also our most creative."
Aside from the absolute vapidity of the feelings here, when did Obama formally become Emperor? HE will liftup businesses? He will spread "those best practices"? In the name of Odin's eye this guy is fucking pathological.
Uhm, is this a reference to the guy who made the YouTube video? Or is he referring to the person who was actually responsible for planning and carrying out the terrorist attack? Because I hadn't heard that we had even identified a single "perpetrator" much less arrested him.
Please tell that he wasn't actually bragging about violating an American citizen's 1st amendment rights over a stupid viral video. Just when I thought there was no way he could make me have any less respect for him, he manages to find a way to pull it off.
"Uhm, is this a reference to the guy who made the YouTube video? Or is he referring to the person who was actually responsible for planning and carrying out the terrorist attack?"
I think that's the point.
Tho i doubt the latter is any more especially single-handedly culpable than the former. Just better dressed for the part.
Best line: "Now I understand everyone's shit's emotional right now. But I've got a 3 point plan that's going to fix EVERYTHING..."
The last time we tried that, 800,000 people died. Pass.
Lincoln and Roosevelt were wartime presidents. Each killed hundreds of thousands of people and imprisoned civilians without due process. They did not bridge any divides. They killed and imprisoned people who disagreed with them.
This guy is despicable. And the smug. Oh, the smug.
Meanwhile, in reality...
I know it's BHO's job to read whatever is put on the teleprompter just like Ron Burgundy, but this is piss down your back and tell you it's raining territory.
Poor Obama, he's only a kinetic-action-time president.
Yes, I thought it was kind of odd to select the president who presided over the Civil War as an example of someone who can "bridge a divide."
Whoever wrote his speech just thought, "Hey, these are two Presidents people know and blindly praise, and no one's going to give a second thought to BHO name-dropping them in the middle of his delivery."
And as usual they were right. The press is an embarrassment.
Or, he's letting the cat out of the bag that he intends to start a war?
So will recordings of these shows be available? Some of us don't have Sirius, and even if we did, we might be working at noon on a weekday.
10)We have to change the system to reflect our better selves. So, no Constitution then?
9) I have no doubt a president with the gifts of Lincoln... might have better bridged the divide... Does a civil war count as bridging the divide?
8) and I want to spread those best practices across America. With more federal mandates.
7) our answer needs to be more than tough talk or calls to carpet-bomb civilians. He prefers targeted bombing of civilians to carpet bombing.
6)We spend more on our military than the next eight nations combined. That's actually a good line.
5) If you doubt America's commitment?or mine?to see that justice is done, just ask Osama bin Laden. Ask Just don't expect an answer, because dead men tell no tales.
4) the state of our Union is strong. This is in the speech every year. Hard to call it a bad line.
3) that's how we delivered more care and benefits to our troops coming home and our veterans. It was admittedly a low baseline to best.
2) Anyone claiming that America's economy is in decline is peddling fiction. I agree with him here.
1) You know, last year, Vice President Biden said that, with a new moon-shot, America can cure cancer. Government is so good at doing stuff, even Joe Biden can't mess it up. And I've promised so many things in the past 8 years, I wanted one promise to top them all.
