Anti-Pot Group Names Rand Paul, Bernie Sanders Worst Candidates on Marijuana
Can you guess who Smart Alternatives to Marijuana (Project SAM) thinks are the best candidates? Probably, even if you're tripping balls right now.

Project SAM (Smart Alternatives to Marijuana), an anti-pot group headed up by former Rep. Patrick Kennedy and former drug-czar adviser Kevin Sabet, has named what it considers the best and worst presidential candidates regarding marijuana policy. The group evaluated would-be presidents based on their "opposition to marijuana legalization for recreational purposes," "support for prevention, intervention, and treatment of marijuana use," and "regulated, FDA-approved approach to the legitimate medical use of marijuana components."
It should come as no surprise that Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul are considered the worst of the bunch by Project SAM's killjoys. Each gets a dismal grade of D-, showing that grade inflation is alive and well even among neo-prohibitionist outfits. Sanders' bad showing is directly tied to his statement during the first Democratic debate in Nevada that he "suspect[ed]" he would vote for that state's legalization initiative. Paul, a practicing opthamologist, goes down because he thinks pot policy is a state-level issue rather than a federal matter.

And who are the folks that Project SAM really digs? Marco Rubio, who refuses to even say whether he's ever tried pot (which means that he has, doesn't it?); Chris Christie, who told the father of an epileptic child that the governor would be making the call about whether the kid could use pot, thank you very much; and Ben Carson, who recently told Glenn Beck that he aims to "intensify" the drug war, all got A grades. Carly Fiorina, who is nobody's idea of a soft-on-drugs kind of candidate, only got a B, since she has allowed that medical marijuana might have some value (as long as it is heavily regulated). And Hillary Clinton, who flat-out opposes recreational marijuana, got a B- since on this question at least she appears to believe in federalism in some half-assed way.
In 2014, I debated Patrick Kennedy about pot legalization on CNN. Read about that here or take a look below.

Kennedy's opposition to legalization makes sense. He doesn't want the riffraff to have the same freedoms to do drugs and drown people that his family enjoys. Plus he has to be involved in national politics somehow or else he doesn't get his allowance.
But what is Sabet's excuse?
Good old fashioned belief that the state knows better than you?
He's made his career out of being anti-drug. Did a lot of work for NIDA and spoke on behalf of the White House against legalization. It's his career, it's how he makes his money.
Chris Christie, who told the father of an epileptic child that the governor would be making the call about whether the kid could use pot, thank you very much...
On camera, no less. How any parent with an ounce of empathy would vote for New Jersey Democrat Chris Christie is beyond me.
"Smart Alternatives to Marijuana". What's that? Hash oil?
Hash oil *is* marijuana.
And yes, vaping hash oil is a great alternative to marijuana when you aren't able to toke up. Like in movie theaters or when out on the town.
I know what hash oil is. I was considering "marijuana" to be the whole flowers for the purpose of an attempted joke.
biker crank
I believe SAM says, send users to a mental institute. They think that anyone who uses marijuana needs to be treated for mental illness. It's pretty much a slightly softer approach vs incarceration. Of course this taints a persons record just like a criminal offense and is no better than the current status quo if lock up users and insure users lives are ruined for eternity.
Trump gets a C+. His unrecanted proposal to legalize all drugs should be worth an "F".
If Rand's dad was running, he'd get a zero.
Kennedy opposes Marijuana and thinks alcohol prohibition was a good thing because he has no self control. Someone just send him 10kg of heroin and we'll be rid of him.
Kasich should be on the drug warrior list
Fiorina also supports MJ federalism no? Of course this doesn't make it past Gillespie's 'filter'.
"Preventing another Big Tobacco"
Ugh. This reminds me of the campaign against legalization in California a few years ago. People were actually complaining that legalizing would open the floodgates and all sorts of evil corporations will sell their subpar herb in 7-11's at discounted prices.
I wanted to scream: "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? PEOPLE ARE GETTING THROWN IN JAIL OVER GROWING A FUCKING PLANT AND YOU WANT TO CONTINUE THAT INJUSTICE BECAUSE YOU'RE AFRAID OF COMPETITION?!?!?" Ugh.
Obligatory
And I'm so fucking glad that the next one of them to die won't command a state funeral.
Probably, even if you're tripping balls right now.
Yes, Agile Cyborg. I believe he was addressing you directly.
You need to ask a hack like Kennedy direct questions like does he think people should go to jail for possessing marijuana even if they haven't harmed anyone. Instead he got away in that interview with deflecting from the disparate racial results by focusing on...just race. Which is why progressives want you to focus only on the racial aspect of state abuse of power in the first place.
If cops murdered more white children then it would be fair. Equality is the lowest common denominator.
My definition of an asshole: someone, or collection of someones, who believe it is their God given right and obligation to tell all the other someones how they should live. Especially when the behavior involved does not effect them one way or the other.
* Patrick has acknowledged being treated for cocaine use during his teenage years, and admitted that he abused drugs and alcohol while he was a student at Providence College.
* Patrick assaulting a security guard at an airport checkpoint in 2000. He paid an undisclosed civil settlement to the victim.
* Also in 2000, Atlantic Navigation Company of Mystic, Connecticut, claimed that a boat they rented to Patrick Kennedy was found abandoned off Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, with US$28,000 worth of damage.
* In 2003, Kennedy was criticized for saying "I have never worked a [insert expletive here] day in my life"
* On May 4, 2006, Patrick crashed his automobile into a barricade on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. A Capitol Police official said the congressman had appeared intoxicated, but Kennedy claimed that he was merely disoriented from prescription medications Ambien and Phenergan. Anonymous sources are alleged to have seen Kennedy drinking at the nearby Hawk & Dove bar prior to the accident.
* On May 5, 2006, Kennedy admitted that he had an addiction to prescription medication and announced he would be re-admitting himself to a drug-rehabilitation facility at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he has sought treatment for prior addictions. He has stated that he has no recollection of the car crash.
* On Friday, June 12, 2009, Kennedy again announced that he "has checked into a medical facility for treatment".
I hope you're not trying to blame Kennedy for any of that. He's obviously the victim of an evil gateway drug.
We can all rest assured that he has good medical care. And deep pockets.
Ah, the Kennedys.
Is there anyone who actually still believes they're from Camelot?
More like a vacant Sandlot.
Get it?
/Statler and Waldorf laugh.
When Kennedy steps up and volunteers to go to jail for his drug sins, I'll start to listen to him.
I have a natural right to control my own body so fuck off
Patches is a Drug and Booze addled reprobate who is no reformed. His solution is prohibition via the mandatory rehab process. The problem is use doesn't equate to addiction or dependence. What's next, patches, Mandatory rehab for beer drinkers?
- "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits." - Mark Twain
For Pat Kennedy, use does equal addiction.
Since he can't control himself, he assumes no one can control and wants all temptations eliminated.
It seems noteworthy that he had problems with Booze and pills, so he wants to attack Pot.
When he volunteers to do 5-10 years in prison for his crimes, I'll be willing to listen to him.
I'm sorry, but some douchebag from a family of drunkards does not get to tell me what I can and cannot put into my body. Maybe, Patrick, if your daddy had been smoking a joint instead of guzzling the 10yo Scotch, Mary Jo Kopechne would have lived to see her 30th birthday.
