Kids in Police-Run Youth Camp Allegedly Beaten, Threatened By Cops
Officer allegedly stood on hand, broke fingers

California children who "talked back" to their parents or teachers were encouraged to enroll in a police-run boot camp designed to build character. But the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the camp for allegedly physically and verbally abusing the kids—many of whom came home beaten and bruised.
According to the Los Angeles Times:
The children, ages 11 to 17, suffered cuts and bruises after being beaten in what was described as "the dark room" during the weeklong boot camp in San Luis Obispo, their attorney, Greg Owen, said. One boy suffered broken bones in his hand when an officer stepped on it because he was not performing a push-up properly, Owen said.
After returning from the boot camp, the children remained silent about what happened because they feared retaliation, the lawyer said.
"They were threatened [that] if they told they would be found and get hurt badly," Owen said, adding that he was representing 10 children but believes that there may be more, including from previous camps. …
The children's parents had paid $400 for an educational and physical activity program to improve their behavior, Owen said. He said some of the children were recommended for the intervention program by their schools after talking back to their teachers and parents.
South Gate police officials said the program spans 20 weeks and is designed to "change the destructive behavior of an at-risk youth" by introducing a structured regimen and educational trips. The boot camp took place during one of those trips.
I don't know if these kinds of programs are generally effective (I tend to doubt it), but one thing I'm sure won't improve the kids' behavior and authority issues is treating them like conscripted soldiers and beating the crap out of them. One kid even told KTLA 5 that a drill sergeant stood on his hand and broke his fingers.
A spokesperson for the police department that runs the boot camp said no had ever made complaints along these lines in its 20-year history. It's not yet known whether charges will be filed.

At least the officer went home safely. That's all that matters.
Heroes.
Yep - eat another donut fatboy
And also, nothing else will happen. Except probably more of the same.

I wonder what *that* is?
*why* that is
The beatings will continue until nobody has any more complaints.
Looks like we have more in common with Cuba than I thought!!!
I remember when my cousin was sent to one of these places. They kidnapped him in the middle of the night, put him on a plane to somewhere out west. Several months later he returned worse than ever and much, much angrier.
That is shocking. People who have problems with authority don't learn to love authority after having their ass whooped?
Fear, love, respect... authority doesn't care why you obey, just that you do.

Oh, I think we all know the answer to that one.
Always camps with these people.
You know who else liked to put people in camps?
Jerry Jones?
Hillary Clinton?
FEMA?
FDR?
John Waters?
how divine
Ivan Reitman?
Culture warriors?
Jim Jones?
CAMP?
Nick Bollettieri?
The Boy/ Girl Scouts?
Winnebago?
Pretty much everyone from '41-'45?
Given the prevalance of sadistic bulies in the police generally, it's horrifying to imagine the type of psychopath that would volunteer for this kind of thing. The nut punches here are bad enough. But the thought of a parent handing their 11 year old over to cops is a nut punch, blow to the head, slap in the face and punch in the gut combined. I feel genuinely ill reading this.
I imagine these are mostly the same kind of parents that respond to their kids getting bad grades or whatever by breaking all their shit and/or publicly humiliating them.
I knew a guy who was frustrated that his 6 or 7 year old kid would take a spanking as just the price of doing whatever he wanted. He told me once, I spank him and he still doesn't do as he's told...what am I supposed to do, break his arm ? Apparently escalating physical violence was the only tool in his parenting tool box.
So,they have their own 'hell week'? These cops think their SEAlLs or something? Yeah, treating problem kids like scum and driving them in the dirt should make a man out of them and teach them to never trust cops. Maybe not a bad thing.
Sounds to me like it's just creating future criminals. I.e. job protection for pigs.

I call bullshit. Maggots don't have bones.
"You are maggots, you are pukes, you are not even human fucking beings. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT UNORGANIZED PIECES OF AMPHIBIAN SHIT!"
I know most cops are wannabe soldiers, these must be the wannabe drill sergeants. They probably go home every night and watch Full Metal Jacket while fondling themselves.

The threats of retaliation were effective.
So, did the kid have broken fingers or did he just tell the reporter that his fingers were broken? Big difference.
I mean, are we dealing with a really awful, stupid, scared straight type of deal, or is this a grittier reboot of "Hello Mudda, Hello Faddah"?
And if the fingers were broken, were they just kind of greenstick splintered, or are we talking about a real through-the-bone fracture?
If there's no break, then I'm calling fake!

It's worse than that. No soldier I ever knew was ever treated this badly by any cadre/instructor/sergeant, etc. Ever. In the first place, it's completely ineffective. Instead of disciplined soldiers, you get bitter sadists eager to perpetuate the abuse on the next batch of candidates. Second, and most importantly, it's fucking immoral and evil as fuck.
Cops pretending to be soldiers, but not really.
Actually doing things no actual soldier would be allowed to do.
Where have i heard that before.
Eh....can't speak for soldiers, but at Parris Island you would sometimes get what I'd call minor abuse - nothing so bad as to break your fingers, for sure. Examples:
-A drill instructor who would walk around the formation when were were at attention, punching the back of the hand if your thumb wasn't on your trouser seam. Once wasn't bad, but once it got bruised up that shit started to hurt.
-If your rifle was canted to the side at shoulder arms, it would get bounced off your head by a DI.
-Saw a kid in front of me in a class get smacked hard in the back of the head for dozing off.
-Being forced to drink water until it made you puke. God help you if you ever complained about not getting a chance to hydrate.
-The helmet drill. This one was rare but hurt like hell. As a punishment, you'd have to put your Kevlar on the ground face up, and get in a pushup position with your chest on top of it and your hands behind your back.
This was in 2001. No idea if they can still do that sort of thing now. I actually don't think they were officially allowed to do so at the time, but there were plenty of things that happened that were not actually authorized.
This is what happens when you contract out parenting.
Look, what's important is that these public servants get to beat up captive children so they can feel like men. And of course, that they go home safely.
The children's parents had paid $400
STEVE SMITH BEAT CHILDREN FOR HALF THAT! SEND TO WOODS!
"He said some of the children were recommended for the intervention program by their schools after talking back to their teachers and parents."
I was constantly accused of "talking back" as a child.
I never did and still don't understand the nature of the offense.
Maybe accusing a child of "talking back" should be considered a sign of psychological abuse by the teacher.
It isn't that the kid used profanity.
It isn't that the kid was talking during class when he's supposed to be quiet.
It isn't that the kid was making violent threats.
It's that the kid actually had the temerity to respond?
In a better world, if a teacher accused a child of "talking back", it's the teacher that would be sent out for behavior modification.
Talking back is bad, because it can expose adults as liars or hypocrites.
Same as "mouthing off". I.e. "respect mah authoritah". Parents and even teachers used to beat this kind of rudeness out of kids but that's unseemly now so I guess we send them to police brutality camp instead.

Why should they get their own hands dirty when they can contract it out to actual, no shit sadists?
Nothing will get you in trouble in school faster than "acting smart".
I wonder how many libertarians remember thinking "this is bullshit" when some pretentious cop, teacher, parent was yanking your chain as a kid.
FTFY. A little more honest this way.
What kind of worthless parent would voluntarily send their kid to a camp run by police? Your kid would probably be less brutalized if you dropped him off at a NAMBLA conference.

"Encouraged."
