Martin O'Malley's Lousy Record on Overpolicing
The potential presidential candidate isn't very good on civil liberties.

Likely presidential candidate Martin O'Malley weighed in on the Baltimore riots last night, which is to say he tweeted some mushy platitudes. The most bizarre subplot of the early presidential campaign, at least for those of us who lived in Baltimore when O'Malley was mayor, is to see this man recast as the Great Insurgent Hope for angry lefties dissatisfied with Hillary Clinton. O'Malley may be a liberal when it comes to taxes and regulations, but if you're talking about civil rights and civil liberties…well, here's a Washington Post piece that should give you a sense of his record on police issues:
Police in Baltimore—like their counterparts elsewhere—have had strained relations with African Americans for generations. But community leaders say the relationship reached a nadir during O'Malley's tenure, thanks to a policing strategy that resulted in tens of thousands of arrests for minor offenses such as loitering and littering.
Although prosecutors declined to bring many of the cases, activists contend that those who were arrested often could not get their records expunged, making it harder for them to get jobs….
In 2005, with O'Malley in office, [former Baltimore NAACP leader Doc] Cheathem recalled the local NAACP branch being "inundated with calls from African Americans and Hispanic men saying they were being arrested and no charges were being filed."
A contingent of activists "met with the mayor and shared our anger—that these guys weren't being charged but were coming out with arrest records," Cheathem recalled. "We requested that this process be stopped, and he was not receptive to it at all. We left with the idea that we had no recourse but to sue."
The NAACP joined in a lawsuit filed by the ACLU that was based on the arrest of a 19-year-old man with no prior criminal record who spent hours in jail for dropping a candy wrapper on the street while sitting on the steps of his aunt's house. The suit named O'Malley and other Baltimore officials, including the police commissioner, and alleged that the Baltimore police had improperly arrested thousands of people "without probable cause and in violation of the U.S. Constitution."
The complaint was settled four years later, with Baltimore agreeing to pay an $870,000 settlement. By then, O'Malley was governor.

We aren't going to talk about how O'Malley turned the Baltimore City prison system into a prostitution ring and crack house.
Why not?
I make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $40h to $86h? Someone was good to me by sharing this link with me, so now i am hoping i could help someone else out there by sharing this link... Try it, you won't regret it!......

By putting that here, are you implying your $ comes from prostitution & crack?

Arrested on suspicion of mopery.
And then the city paid over 3/4M for an arrest that should never have been made.

Let's promote him again! Sounds like he's overdue!
By then, O'Malley was governor.
Failing upwards; on to the White House!
These riots should end O'Malley's poltical career. He was a horrible governor by any measure. Even if you forget his appalling economic policies, his handling of law enforcement issues is straight out of the Bull Connor playbook. Martin O'Malley is one of the worst governors ever to serve in the United States. He managed to combine crony capitalism with the worst sort of law and order oppression and corruption.
Sadly, he will never be called to task for all of this because he has become the only option for the Dems to escape the SS Hillary as it sinks.
I can't see how any Dem could support seeing as how his biggest accomplishment appears to be getting a GOP governor elected to succeed him in Blue Maryland.
Also, I can't hear his name without thinking of the song from Aristocats.
I couldn't see how any Dem could support a half black one term Senator who made his bones in the Chicago political machine while attending a black supremacist church. Yet, they did. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but it appears it might happen. They are like Richard Gear in an Officer and a Gentleman, "they got nowhere else to go".
I used to think Cuomo would be their alternative.
He appears to have no interest in running and time is running out to put together a serious campaign. Also, he has a massive ethics scandal on his hands. The speaker of the Assembly in New York was indicted. And it appears Cuomo shut down the state ethics committee to try and protect him. I was surprised he wasn't putting together a campaign, until the indictment. I think Cuomo is damaged goods and that is why he hasn't put together a campaign.
Yes, I'd heard the ethics scandal is hanging him up.
I also think Cuomo is also doomed by his accent. It's pretty annoying.
Cuomo will not be popular outside of NY. He looks like a fucking mafioso. That's normal in NYC or Chicago, but not in most of the country.
I don't think he could win the general, but a Hillary-less primary?
He's the first black president, John. That's why his popularity has never dropped much below 50% even though he's been so awful. People have to prove they are not racist. It seems to be very important to most people.
Yes. The Democrats think that that feeling will transfer to a woman in the form of Hillary or Fauxcahontus. Maybe it will, but I don't see it. Obama was the black friend stupid white people always hoped to have. Hillary and Warren are the nasty mother in law even dumb white people actually have. I don't see many of them feeling obligated to vote for her.
Question: if they feel the need to run a woman, why not Hassan out of NH? She won reelection in a GOP wave, is from a swing state, doesn't seem as polarizing or have some of the issues as Hillary or Warren.
The problem with all of these people are that it is so hard to put together a serious campaign. Thanks to campaign finance rules, you can't just get a few rich backers and go for it like you once could. Very few politicians have the kind of fundraising network in place to even consider running for President.
Without the campaign finance rules, someone like Hassan would be able to launch a hastily put together campaign and take out Hillary the way Eugen McCarthy did Johnson. That can't happen anymore. Hillary very well may win the nomination by default even if she does turn out to be a fatally flawed candidate for the simple reason that the campaign finance rules the Democrats love so much prevent anyone from stopping her. Karma is a bitch sometimes.
It won't work as well with women. Women were never slaves. The narrative of a black guy becoming president in the USA is something you could write a best selling novel about. A woman potus? Not so much. The dems have no way of ever recapturing that magic. It's one of those once in many generations type of event.
I think the fact of being the first out of what, 44, for a group that makes up half the nation might be seen as pretty historical, slavery notwithstanding
One of the fall outs of the Obama Presidency is that I really doubt we will ever see another black President in my lifetime. The problem was white liberals were not ready for a black liberal President. They just were not able to treat him like any other President and criticize him. Without criticism from his own side, Obama was essentially unaccountable as President. Even liberals, thought they won't admit it, at some level understand that was a very bad thing for the Democratic party. It has been fun and games calling everyone who disagreed with the President racist, except that a lot of the time they disagreed with him and were unable to say so because they had so publicly and thoroughly branded everyone else who did a racist. They don't want to go through that again. So, I don't think the Democrats will ever nominate another black candidate and any black Republican will be so thoroughly savaged by the media that the Republicans are unlikely to do so as well.
Well, as you admit you didn't think it was going to happen the first time...
It is not happening in 2016. You never know but I would be very surprised if it ever happens again.
Correction: First half-breed president. Clinton was actually our first black president.
Culturally Clinton was and is a hell of a lot more "black" than Obama. Obama is not only a half breed, his black half is African not African American. My guess is that if you water boarded Obama and got him to tell you the absolute truth, he has a lower opinion of African Americans than the worst white racist. I have known a lot of black African immigrants in my life and I have never met a single one of them who didn't harbor a lot of animosity towards native born blacks.
Can you blame them? Just think of how disappointing it would be as a black person arriving from Africa, to see those distant cousins of yours in the great land of the free, and then you arrive and see the ghetto culture. You would have to at least be a little disappointed. I work with some blacks who are from Africa, and they are nothing like most blacks here. And sorry to say, I'm not racist at all, but they speak English a lot better than most native born blacks.
I can give you some insight by citing my fiance's fundamental view regarding politics. She is a personally-culturally-conservative progressive Democrat (yes, they exist)- and other than supporting Bill Clinton - "my man Bill" she calls him - her entire political worldview can be summed up as "Republicans are evil."
She is incredibly ignorant of Hillary's ethical and legal problems. She would absolutely refuse to hire someone with Hillary's record of corruption to work in her business... BUT because Republicans have to be kept out of office at all costs, she will cheerfully vote for her in the next general election. And she really goes to great effort to maintain her ignorance... she feels all effective leaders are corrupt to some degree and we have to accept that, and that most of the scandals impinging on her consciousness are likely false allegations by the vast right wing hate machine.
Moreover, because she is very busy with her work (she easily works 60 hours a week), and with her proto-step-mom duties, she doesn't pay attention to politics at all. Hell, she had no idea there was anything going on in Baltimore at all!
This sort of willful blindness is very, very common. I think its a coping strategy to deal with the contradiction between is and ought in government.
Goodness, what a sound relationship you two must have!
Nice response from some whelp who has never had a relationship.
Those who have know that politics are the least important factor. The only sign I saw in the post that might give a hint was that even after a 60 hour work week, she's willing to be a mom to kids that aren't even hers. Seems pretty solid, actually.
This may sound crazy to you, but I've had girlfriends and friends that I disagree with on politics and yet I don't run them down as ignorant to strangers. People disagree and everyone can be reasonable and not suffering from false consciousness.
You've just described half of my family. 100% accurate. 100% sad.
Then there are people like my father, who judged politicians by how his investments or prospective investments were doing. To give you some idea, he really liked Armand Hammer, because he figured out a way to make $ off the Soviets.
And you're gonna marry this chick?
Of course! I love her, and she loves me! Seriously guys, there is so much more to life than politics!
Aside from how she fills out her ballot, she has lived a life that any libertarian would approve of. She is financially prudent. She is always true to her word. She believes in standing on her own two feet (and worked two full-time jobs to afford college). She is charitable towards those who deserve charity, and also has the spine to say "no" to those who don't deserve it.
Why should I begrudge her the foible of casting an insignificant vote every few years in the charade that are elections? If I were to excommunicate every Democrat and Republican voter from my circle of friends and family, I'd end up an unloved hermit.
Of course there's more to life than politics, which is why you might entertain the idea that this person you say you love just reasonably disagrees with you rather than telling everyone she does so because of her massive ignorance and lying to herself.
Oh, how cute. Bo fancies himself the Rider on the White Horse...
I believe I speak for everyone when I say that pictures are the only way we can have a real answer.
Preferably bathing suit photos, or pictures of her in yoga pants, or while shucking an oyster.
I think you two are going to be just fine.
Hell, she had no idea there was anything going on in Baltimore at all!
She must be pretty busy then, every single person that I know who lives outside the USA have already texted or called me and asked me if I'm ok and what the hell is going on here.
Also like Chris Farley in Wayne's World 2
O'Malley is not a serious contender for POTUS. The dem's are in desperate times, all because they got so overly confident in 2008. Remember how we were going to have a D super majority for the next 100 years and the GOP was over as a political party? And then they proceeded to just think it's inevitable that it will be Hillary's turn next. None of them, and I mean NONE of them, saw this coming.
I'd keep in mind that Presidential elections have, and have especially had recently, different dynamics and results than off year ones before you go counting chickens.
There's a massive gulf between should and will in politics. I site as proof every senator MA has sent to the Senate since WW II.
You know who else had an SS?
Gilligan?
Chevrolet?
Chevrolet?
*hands head, shuffles away*
Baseball teams?
Football teams too.
Cobra Commander?
Hitler! And his was Waffen!
Why'd everybody stop even mentioning Chaffee? Seems nobody even picked up that meme to begin with.
Wait, was he kidnapped too?
I mean, you know, in case anyone here was kidnapped 1st. Jus' sayin'.
Is O'Malley the one Carcetti was based on?
He was the mayor of Baltimore and white. I'm guessing yes.
And now he wants to marry Sansa Stark to Ramsay Snow. Fuck you littlefinger.
NO SPOILERS. The North remembers.
Yeah, I looked it up. O'Malley said he hates The Wire because of the negative portrayal. Personally, I doubt he was ever as good as Carcetti.
When a politician hates his portrayal, it was probably accurate.
Unlikely for him to run after this, unless he's an even bigger idiot than previously demonstrated.
He's an arrogant asshole, so it probably wouldn't deter him. He reminds me of a a cross between Obama and John Kerry. That's a loathsome combination is there ever was one.
He has a large ego.
His wife was (is?) a judge in Baltimore County while he was mayor. IIRC each position had residency requirements so we were to believe she lived in the county and he lived in the coty while they had children in the house(s).
Let's not forget that Freddy Gray is not the first victim of the rough ride and also not the first to die from it. This was happening under O'Malley's watch as mayor and under O'Malley as governor and he knew about it.
Is this the guy anyone wants as president?
I bet 90% of America has no idea O'Malley was even governor of Maryland. And it is not like the media outside of places like Reason is going to call him to task for all of this.
Er, like the WaPo article heavily referenced above?
Fair enough. I assumed that was an older article from when he was governor. It is not. It is from the 25th. Maybe they will. I hope they do because he deserves it.
Of course they'll take him to task. He represents a threat to Hillary.
Yes, because there's been no negative coverage of Hillary lately!
Really, the 'biased MSM' line is pretty tired.
Oh yeah. Uh huh.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....49316.html
Ooh, but you're right, I found some negative coverage on Fox News.
One of the top searches for Hillary, US snooze and World Report:
Aww look, it's a rainbow logo!
Hillary Clinton Changed Her Profile Pic and the Internet Went Wild
http://www.usnews.com/news/art.....-went-wild
I guess you missed the NYT article on her foundations recently?
That proves the media has no bias?
When the media is printing story after story about her missteps it gets a bit harder to claim they're in the tank for her. Of course it was a non-falsifiable kind of whining to start with, so there's that.
Because you're young, you probably don't recall the libertarians "whining" about the favorable treatment Bush and those in his administration got when they were putting forth the case for the Iraq war. We're not just taking about your precious Hillary here. It's a general deference for those in power.
90% of Americans have never heard of him, as of right now. And he won't even be able to carry MD as a presidential candidate.
I guess sometimes it's good when no one has ever heard of you. See Obama. But O'Malley is not Obama, he's a white guy who has a hell of a record, all bad, and that will all come out during the primaries. Team Hillary will reduce O'Malley to dust before he even gets out of the gate.
I think in a Presidential race he'd carry MD.
That is my thinking. I can't believe the Democrats could elect a white guy governor of a blue state President. And not even a good governor. Hell, whatever you think of Dukakis, he was a hell of a lot better governor than O'Malley.
Dukakis was a card-carrying ACLU prog. As much as the ACLU is hated by the batting eyelashes and washed-up detectives on Fox News the ACLU has done incredible work for the open society.
And the ACLU in the 1980s was a lot different and better than it is now. Yeah, Dukakis was an old time liberal but at least was a real civil libertarian. I would take his reanimated corpse over about half of the Republicans and all of the Democrats running for President in a heartbeat.
Most of the liberals, I mean when I think back to the 70s, they were all real civil libertarians. Now their movement has been taken over by the far left progressives. There's nothing liberal about that.
I actually had the pleasure of riding the Red Line into Boston and sat 3 feet away from Dukakis while he chatted up a couple of adoring coeds.
He was very affable bordering on smug. Basically he offhandedly was explaining that his loss was due to Republicans out maneuvering his campaign in several states. He wasn't bitter, but philosophical about it.
Also I was surprised by how short he was. He was definitely craning his neck to look into the eyes of one of the girls.
ACLU's 'selective', not to say hypocritical, approach to protecting freedoms is the cause of its scorn here.
Maryland: 'tis a silly place.
"Manly deeds; womanly words."
Yep, it doesn't get much fucking sillier that that.
She's got huge tracts of ghetto.
Let's not forget that Freddy Gray is not the first victim of the rough ride and also not the first to die from it. This was happening under O'Malley's watch as mayor and under O'Malley as governor and he knew about it.
Is this the guy anyone wants as president?
Sounds like the perfect guy to head ICE. He'll give "deportation" a new meaning.
OT: Sheriff's deputy fired for sending yucky texts.
Meanwhile, other Sheriff's deputy who has a long history of abuse and violence, and has slammed one innocent man into a wall so hard he was left permanently brain damaged and unable to care for himself: HE'S A-OK!
Interesting what gets you fired these days. Make an icky comment? Boom, zero tolerance.
Actually causing criminal mayhem on the streets? Nothing to see here.
Is that a slur I'm not familiar with? Or just jokey, or a text abbreviation?
"warned him to look for alternatives and to avoid arresting people simply because they challenged his authority or weren't respectful."
So hey buddy try not to be a blatant douche bag when you feel like being a blatant douchebag.
$870,000 for a thrown away candy wrapper. Good lord.
Of course O'Malley was lousy on civil liberties. You don't get progressive utopia without a truncheon to back it up. And you aren't going to sell the soccer moms out in the suburbs on the merits of the nanny state coddling scary black guys. And if you don't sell the soccer moms, how the hell are you going to get them and their husbands to go along with transferring their wealth to the underprivileged?
See, by ensuring the police beat the shit out of the scary black guys, he's really helping them!
The soccer moms out in the burbs are the ones with a 'Civility' sticker on one side of their Prius and a I'm ready for Hillary sticker, placed over their Obama/Biden 2012 sticker, on the other side.
Depends on where your burbs are. The microscopic burbs in bible-belt Ohio are more likely to read Pray to End Abortion, Christian radio call letters, or host faded Bush/Palin references.
Here in MD, it's almost comical how this works. Before the last gubernatorial election, I would be driving between Baltimore City and Howard County a lot. When I was inside the city, there where Brown (the D) signs everywhere, but as soon as you would cross that magical line into Howard County, the signs would suddenly all be Hogan (the R) signs.
What this all comes down to, is that most of the residents of the city are all 'I'm on welfare and I need for you to pay more taxes', and on the Howard County side, most of the residents are all 'I already pay too much taxes'.
When Eherlich beat KKT there may have been R signs in the city. Not a lot of folks wanted a Kennedy running Maryland.
Of course they are. And they just loooove black people. Just as long as they don't have to see them or anything.
They know the nanny state isn't going to be coming down on their kids. So what's the harm in throwing in a few more rules to make everyone be "nice"? If there's a few youths in the inner city take a beating over it, well, hey they can always blame it on "those other white people". After all, it's not like they're going to be confronted with the consequences.
This. It really is like that. The tolerant liberals love them some diversity and then they move to a 99% white neighborhood to prove it.
Two most liveral familes I knew in MD:
(1) Public school teacher and FDA lawyer - moved to ten acre "farmette" in Southern PA
(2) Professor at Goucher College - luved on large estate in Randallstown.
Is it the old-school rod-on-the-little-boy-knuckles Catholicism in places like Maryland that produces such high numbers of Leftist authoritarians? Those deeply-vested and interested in civil rights and open society issues need to take a serious fucking long look at what appears to me to be the ominous rise of Left-wing authoritarianism.
Also, the economic engine of Maryland has long been the federal government, so the state attracts plenty of true believers as well as moochers and looters. It should come as no surprise that for a long time, the "Free" State's politics combined the worst of government-worshiping fiscal leftism and government-worshiping social rightism.
Those deeply-vested and interested in civil rights and open society issues need to take a serious fucking long look at what appears to me to be the ominous rise of Left-wing authoritarianism.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but you're just noticing this now?!
Give him a break, he's been whacked out of his mind for the last few years.
Fair enough. But, how much of a break does he deserve for not sharing.?
These riots really are going to screw the Democrats. If they do nothing, then they lose the white vote even worse than they lost it in 2014 as terrified white suburbanites decide looking tolerant and being gay affirming isn't so important anymore. If they crack down, they totally demoralize the black vote and end up with even worse black turnout. And oh by the way, allowing black race riots to occur is not going to do much to get them the 90% lock on Hispanic votes they are convinced is theirs.
The funniest thing is that Obama and Holder, thought not even mainly responsible for this particular riot, have done everything they can to divide the country on racial lines and foster this kind of thing happening. The dumb bastards seemed to have missed the memo that you encouraged riots when you are out of power not when you are President and in charge.
I was thinking the same thing. Democrats are in a lose/lose situation with the riots.
You want riots when there is a Republican President. Then the Democrats campaign by saying "vote for us instead of the racist Republicans and we won't have riots". When there is a Democratic President, they can't do that and the riots make them look weak and unable to control the country.
The dumb bastards seemed to have missed the memo that you encouraged riots when you are out of power not when you are President and in charge.
Never let a crisis go to waste. And if there is no crisis at hand, create one.
That is how they think. They are just too stupid that things are not that simple once you are in charge.
The riots are going to screw libertarians as well. The riots are exactly what the political establishment want, and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are here to make sure the rioting does not stop until the attention on this has totally been deflected from the police brutality focus.
The rioters are nothing but useful idiots. They are making sure that the police brutality will continue unabated because the issue is not about police brutality, it's about race.
So what's the solution? Reign in the police and hold them accountable? Hell no, the solution is for politicians to blabber on about race, do nothing, and maybe we need to raise taxes so that things are more equal.
Makes me sick.
Maybe. I am inclined the think the effects of them are going to be a lot more unpredictable than the establishment thinks. People are willing to support police unions and pay taxes to pay for welfare and prisons because they view doing so as the only way to maintain order and to keep the problems of the black under class confined to their neighborhoods. The problem with these riots is that it shows that the police and the welfare are no longer able to deliver on their end of the bargain. In the short term, the answer is going to be "call out the army if necessary but put a stop to this shit." In the long term, however, I think the answer is going to be a bit different. People are going to start asking why the hell they are paying for all of these cops and all of this welfare when we still end up with a riot.
I think we might see some real changes in the system rather than more of the same. The changes ironically won't come from a "we need to help these people impulse. People are going to be too angry for that. It will instead be a "I am tired of paying for this shit, fuck it and leave these people alone impulse. And that ironically would be the best thing that could ever happen.
You're more optimistic than I am about it.
At the very least these riots and the ones in Ferguson and the murder in Charleston have led to a much larger outcry for police to wear body cameras, and that is definitely a victory.
I'm all for the body cameras. But I don't know how much difference it can make until the cops are actually held accountable for their crimes.
What I see happening is that more and more cops are caught on camera behaving badly. Most of the time, nothing happens, maybe a paid vacation or a lawsuit where someone sues and wins a settlement, which does not affect the cops at all because the tax payers pick up the tab.
Then, the cops get used to the cameras, knowing that they will not be held accountable, no matter what, and nothing changes.
If enough of the bad behavior by the police is caught on camera then there will be more of an outcry for punishment.
"[...]see this man recast as the Great Insurgent Hope for angry lefties dissatisfied with Hillary Clinton.[...]"
Hey, the Ds really got to get someone warming up in the 'pen. This morning, even the Chron is holding its editorial nose over Shrill, including demanding answers about the 'fake scandal' Benghazi, along with the bribes and the destruction of evidence.
There is some stench bad enough that leftys finally admit there's a smell in the room.

"I support the First Amendment, BUT..."
We're talking about "liberals" who believe, more than anything, in their "inalienable right" to be protected from anything which alarms or discomfits them.
This morning I watched esteemed Murland Congresscritter Elijah Cummings thoughts on the Balmer riots, which he blamed on "austerity".
Austerity, of course, means "not letting progs spend to imbecility and beyond".
I watched some of the rioting last night. A liquor store got torched and firefighter ran in an rescued a baby from the apartment above. The baby's mother looked Chinese. She and her husband owned the store and lived in the apartment. Post racial America, here we come!
I don't think the Democrats can count on the votes of Baltimore's Asian shopkeepers in 2016.
*Cummings' thoughts
When we left graduated from MD, Baltimore City was spending more $ per student than any of the other 23 counties.
Found this: austerity my arse
The baby's mother looked Chinese. She and her husband owned the store and lived in the apartment. Post racial America, here we come!
.
"Those damn Asian shopkeepers! They take all the money out of the neighborhood!"
.
Holy fuck I hate that bullshit.
I've been to Baltimore, MD and if you ask me it needs a lot more arrests for littering.
They could just create a jobs program and pay someone to sweep up all those chicken bones.
Did that sound racist?
So is the solution to legalize littering? Or should we simply not enforce it on certified oppressed groups?
If anyone is caught littering, they get a rough ride. That'll teach those litter bugs.
Maybe we have to legalize it. It sounds nice to go after everyone who liters but what do you do when you have a large segment of the population who just won't abide no matter how draconian you make the tickets?
what do you do when you have a large segment of the population who just won't abide no matter how draconian you make the tickets?
Make them pay the draconian tickets. And the city gets more revenue. Everybody wins!
And then you get riots and they burn the city down giving you the magic of "stimulus"!!
I seem to remember a time when law enforcement had other options up its sleeve besides "ignore" and "run through the criminal justice meatgrinder" when it came to petty nuisances like littering.
pay someone to sweep up all those chicken bones.
And leave the watermelon rinds? They draw flies, and bees.
And ants. That's how you get ants.
