Tim Cook's Ugly Power Play Against Religious Liberties in Indiana
He is abusing business boycotts
Business boycotts are a perfectly legitimate tool for "signaling" one's discontent or affecting social change in a free

society. One can debate their efficacy, but not their legitimacy. But trust corporations to take a good thing and turn it into crap. The CEOs of Apple, Salesforce (not to mention myriad sanctimonious state officials) are using boycotts to force Indiana to scrap its Religious Freedom and Restoration Act (because, they claim fallaciously, the law will give business owners "a license to discriminate" against gays).
What's wrong with what they are doing? It they were merely boycotting Christian businesses whose beliefs they found abhorrent, it would be one thing, I note in my column at The Week. (After all, I avoid Domino's Pizza because its owner, Tom Monaghan, has expressly noted that he uses his profits to campaign against abortion rights. Losing my dollars won't change his mind, but it makes me feel better and it is no more useless than voting, a folly I occassionally indulge.)
"But what's truly obnoxious about his (Apple CEO Tim Cook's) campaign is that he is using his right not to do business with Indiana, because it's doing something he disagrees with, to obtain a law that would deny Indiana businesses the same right not to do business with folks who they don't agree with. This is simply intolerance masquerading as a crusade for justice and equality — a naked use of brute market power to legislate his views."

And look at all the proggies cheering the big corporation influencing politics.
Big corporations are OK if they do the accepted signaling. That has been Apple's m.o. for the last 20 years. "We're big, our products are decent, and we pretend to support prog causes."
Pretend is the key word here. If Apple truly believed that these religious freedom laws were that harmful to homosexuals, they would boycott any state that had them in the books, not just Indiana, and would choose not to do so much business, have offices, or sell products in areas with full-blown bans on homosexuality, such as the UAE or India. This is clearly just a PR stunt and Team Progressive signaling stunt on their part.

Rather, just like in UAE or India, they wouldn't boycott at all. They'd put 'the customer is always right' at the top of their franchise agreements and make their employees in IN provide products to homosexuals as part of their employment agreement or let them go find a job at Samsung.
I avoid Domino's Pizza because its owner, Tom Monaghan, has expressly noted that he uses his profits to campaign against abortion rights.
I avoid Domino's Pizza because their food tastes like an abortion.
I dunno, they have pretty good deals on a large fetus-lovers pizza.
Agreed, but I fucking hate that they went all Starbucks on the way they named the sizes of them.
I'm supposed to remember that "Venti" AND "Third Trimester" both mean extra large?
Quit being cute and just go with small, medium and large.
Plus, he doesn't wash his hands after using the toilet.
I'm an Irish-American. My rule is, you don't by pizza from somebody whose name stars with O'. You want someone whose name ends in o. 🙂
D'ya think there aren't pro-lifers running small, family owned pizzerie? I'm not going
to punish myself by buying crap pizza because Gino or Tony might donate to RTL.
Kevin R
Pretty sure we don't have to worry about Tony donating to RTL anytime soon...
"Made with the freshest ingredients, your first taste of an original Domino's pizza will remind you of crushing an infant's skull -- Or Your Money Back?"
Domino's went from "An Abomination that Stinks in the Nostrils of God" to "meh". I guess that is an improvement.
This Cook character is turning out to be just as much a sphincter as Jobs: Obnoxious, smarmy, unpleasant little leftist.
Jobs would never have sanctioned this kind of shit. Jobs may have been a massive tool and an asshole, but he was also a smart businessman. Cook is showing himself to be a fucking mongoloid when it comes to actual business. Which is probably because he's out of his depth and catering to TEAM OUTRAGE is the best he can come up with.
People with Apple stock are going to want to sell it pretty soon. I wish I had some to sell.
Meh.
Here's the thing = lies are profitable.
When tim cook says, """If you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock""?..... he's actually engaging in *targeted marketing*
Because saying, "PROFITS ARE BULLSHIT" is how you get Millenials to pay extra $$ for their Fair Trade Coffee, for their planet-destroying Electric Car, and most-definitely their way-fucking-overpriced laptop that burns itself to death in just a few short years.
Apple's "boycott" of Indiana? will ensure another billion$ in orders from schoolteachers around the country who adore Apple products.
CSR - 'corporate social responsibility' - is just a line-item in the marketing budget. It has costs and it has returns. You don't invest in it if it doesn't pay. It pays.
Mebbe, mebbe not. What Tim Cook's actions really show is that he is very good at copying Steve Jobs' actions and style, but without the slightest understanding of why. He won't be able to cope with changing conditions. As much as I detest Steve Jobs, at least he adapted to changing conditions.
When Apple needs the next iMac, iPad, or iPhone, Tim Cook won't be able to recognize one, let alone think it up on his own.
When Apple needs the next iMac, iPad, or iPhone, Tim Cook won't be able to recognize one, let alone think it up on his own.
^THIS^
Already, Apple is reduced to following Android's lead. And I say this as an iPhone owner. Their biggest innovation in the last couple of years has been screens almost as big as other vendors' and colored plastic cases.
And the stupid-as-shit watch with a screen too small to be useful, which needs an iPhone in your pocket to work anyway.
And let's not forget the stupid watch has already been available for Android for a while now. It's just not selling for the reasons you offer.
What is really irritating is that the latest iOS software update includes the iWatch app, which you CANNOT DELETE from your device. Fucking assholes.
What? You don't have the pop-up holographic display for your iWatch? Enjoy your screen, loser.
THIS.
It is like watching someone who may be technically proficient musically trying to play jazz like Bird Parker. They can play the notes, but they have no feel for it and no ability to improvise on their own.
I just realized what's been nagging at me ever since I hit "Submit":
Tim Cook is a cargo cultist!
Sure, I get that, but the fact is that when Jobs was alive and in control, Apple became the juggernaut that it is, without getting this involved in politics and the like. I think Jobs was on to something with that. This kind of market share refinement seems like it would result in a decreased market share because it alienates people in order to court others. So you reinforce the dedication of some customers, but lose others in the process.
There's bland "social responsibility" that so many companies engage in as a matter of course that mollifies the SJW types and is ignored by everyone else. And then there's explicit, polarizing "social responsibility" like this here. Sure, it can work for a while (like Chik-Fil-A getting huge boosts to sales), but again, these are temporary, faddish boosts that will fade extremely soon because people's attention spans for this stuff are incredibly short.
This kind of "targeted marketing" will work in the short run but will be an overall loser in the long run.
"This kind of "targeted marketing" will work in the short run but will be an overall loser in the long run."
Which is why its always changing.
Just because Global Warming made "saving the rainforest" obsolete didn't mean it wasn't a good scam while it was the hot thing.
boycotting indiana is just more marketing... and who do they really offend? people who will be too scared to disagree in public.
Sometimes "not taking a position" has greater costs than taking one. In the case of teh gaze, Apple has their storyline cut out for them. There's no 'long term cost' that wasn't already factored in before they even picked Tim Cook to be the next CEO.
Which is why its always changing.
All of these causes, they all hit the exact same audience. And the problem is, eventually all the SJWs have already bought their products. And in the meantime, you've positioned yourself as the SJW company. And on every one of those issues you've managed to piss off a few more people who would now prefer your competitors.
Do you think Pepsi was worried that their "The Choice of a New Generation" campaign was going to ostracize Old People?
Religious freedom is great and all, but when its mostly supported by a minority population in decline, you're not exactly burning crucial bridges when you fail to support it.
I also think that in the "what is gained/what is lost" equation? People are far less negatively-influenced by a company's "social" behavior than they are positively influenced. "Loyalty" is more important than winning 'already-negative' people over.
"Boycotting Indiana is just more marketing... and who do they really offend? People who will be too scared to disagree in public."
Exactly, which is why Team Blue remains undefeated in the kulturwar. People who dare disagree with the consensus of the day in public are committing thoughtcrime against SJWs.
The keep losing fedgov seats, governorships, and state houses, so at least there is that.
People with Apple stock are going to want to sell it pretty soon. I wish I had some to sell.
You can. It's called short selling. Borrow someone else's stock, sell it, and agree to buy it back at a certain date.
Good way to burn through all your cash unless you have insider information.
Pretty sure this position is about 17 years out of date.
Losing my dollars won't change his mind, but it makes me feel better
It's also irrational and emotional as all hell.
So is their tomato sauce.
In 1998, after 38 years of ownership, Domino's founder Tom Monaghan announced his retirement, sold 93 percent of the company to Bain Capital, Inc. for about $1 billion, and ceased being involved in day-to-day operations of the company.
Jeez, Dalmia, when the worst shows you to be massively behind the times...
Once a dipshit, always a dipshit.
A serious publication ought be rather embarrassed to prominently feature such an ignorant, factually challenged dipshit, but Reason isn't what it used to be.
It was better when Postrel was here. Enjoy your afternoon drink now east coasters. *furrows brow*
But Mitt Romney is far worse, therefore vindication
I can only say...Touch
Pretty sure this position is about 17 years out of date.
Ya well Shikia is also upset with Domino's not being entirely staffed by illegal immigrants, so there's that too.
Ahem...that's illegal-immigrants.
No, its undocumented workers.
Because every single one of them works, and none of them is breaking any laws.
Yet Cook apparently has no problem with Apple having an office in Abu Dhabi, where homosexuality is a capital offense and torture and human rights abuses are common.
Expressing his displeasure with an Islamic regime would send the wrong signals.
"Expressing his displeasure with an Islamic regime would send the wrong signals."
The main signal being "please cut off my head".
Abu Dhabi, where homosexuality is a capital offense and torture and human rights abuses are common.
I guess Muslim oppression of gays is okay, because, feelz, or something.
No, it is tolerated because the Muslims have demonstrated that when their religious ways are challenged that they have much more "spirited" response than some rube Christians in Indiana.
It is sad but true that the reason they don't censor Abu Dhabi for their position is because they are scared of being the next Charlie Hebdo.
Is anyone really scared of the Christian pizza parlor owners?
But some of our erstwhile posters SWEAR there is a Christian Taliban out there, just waiting in the bushes to get you.
That would cost Apple a lot of business. Temporarily "boycotting" Indiana won't cost him or Apple much.
I dunno how they can boycott Indiana without closing all the Apple stores.
So he's not just a sanctimonious little bitch. He's a lying sanctimonious little bitch, who isn't even boycotting Indiana.
" The CEOs of Apple, Salesforce (not to mention myriad sanctimonious state officials) are using boycotts to force Indiana to scrap its Religious Freedom and Restoration Act."
CORPORATIONS!!! UNDUE INFLUENCE ON OUR KULTURE!!! MUST OPPOSE....
oh, what? they're on "our" side now? Geezus, why didn't you say so. WHOO HOO!!! Oppress them bible-beaters, Apple!
We had no idea the Pandora's Box we opened up when we mis-applied the antidiscrimination provisoins of the Civil Rights Act to private actors.
What a fucking mess this has become and will continue to be, until the day we realize nobody has a right to compel someone to sell them something.
But we'll never reach that day.
Tony and those who share his intolerance are cheering this on. Engendering discord and punishing his philosophical adversaries are features, not bugs.
According to Tony, the fact that progressives spend more time arguing about microaggressions than foreign policy or economics is proof of their towering intellects.
According to Tony, the fact that progressives spend more time arguing about microaggressions than foreign policy or economics is proof of their towering intellects.
Eventually they'll nail down just how many assholes can dance on the head of a pin.
It took mankind thousands of years to realize controlling speech they don't like is worse than allowing it. At some point I think the realization will come for economic decisions but it doesn't seem like it will be in my lifetime.
Who is 'we,' kemosabe?
We had no idea the Pandora's Box we opened up when we mis-applied the antidiscrimination provisoins of the Civil Rights Act to private actors.
What mis-application? Unless you're rolling all the CRAs up into the '64 Act, this is/was the obvious extrapolation.
Feature, not bug.
Cuomo Will Become First U.S. Governor to Visit Cuba
So, boycott Indiana, but do business with gay-killing Cuba. What a fucking hypocrite!
The Stupid Vote is an essential component to political sustainability
Especially in New York
(narrows gaze, shakes fist)
Don't look at me - I don't vote.
Expressing his displeasure with a communist regime would send the wrong signals.
Wouldn't Indianans be better off not being allowed to use those NSA tracking devices anyway? Seems like Apple is doing those citizens a favor but calling it a threat.
"This is simply intolerance masquerading as a crusade for justice and equality ? a naked use of brute market power to legislate his views."
You of course must be referring to Wayne LaPierre and the NRA, with all their calls for boycotts from individuals as well as businesses.
Hey joe, you want to go to the carnival? I know you're too short to go on any of the rides, but maybe we can put you in the freak show as a dwarf or something. joe the Angry Dwarf! It's perfect! And I swear I didn't rip Howard Stern off.
"borrowed", not "ripped off"!
Wasn't Joe the little guy they were throwing at the Velcro dartboard in "Wolf of Wall Street"?
Got to earn a livin' somehow... if you cannot do God's work on some of the meanest streets in America, that is. Or "urban planning".
"Wasn't Joe the little guy they were throwing at the Velcro dartboard in "Wolf of Wall Street"?"
No. That was Joe's significantly larger brother.
Bag. Dicks. Eat as many as you want, Jack.

Not only will you attract proggies, you have a better acronym.
The alt-text is refusing to do business with H&R, because of the lack of support for the boycott against Indiana.
We should use the govt to force reason to use alt-text
nice
Let's see...a large corporation wants to use the law to crush small businesses run by conscientious Christians?
Oops, I mean, they're taking a stand on principle! Yeah.
I'll add another point. Apple's last-quarter sales in China amounted to $16 billion. Based on Mr. Cook's stand with regard to Indiana, I can only assume that Apple endorses the policies of the Chinese government.
+1 Child Policy
Of course, because if not, Cook is a hypocrite and a fraud. And he couldn't possibly be that, could he?
Of course, a hypocrite and a fraud is probably preferable to an advocate of forced abortions.
So next step is declaring Salesforce a public utility, right?
*snorts, chokes on coffee*
You may be the worst, but that is damned funny!
Oh god...have you ever dealt with Salesforce? If the worst CRM were to become a public utility, it would obviously be Salesforce.
Of course I have. That's how I know this is the next step.
SalesForce is an admirable marketing machine. They manage to get suckers to sign up in staggering numbers.
They are also geniuses for creating a piece of crap so bad that it supports legions of consultants and developers who promise that they can turn that piece of shit you signed up for into something sort of resembling that nifty demo you saw when you were choosing a CRM.
It is a vicious cycle. Those same consultants are out there pushing more people to use SF because they know it means a never ending amount of billable hours for them.
We're transitioning to Salesforce right now. I am having trouble imagining how it could be worse than Siebel.
My ex-wife makes $75 every hour on the laptop . She has been laid off for seven months but last month her pay check was $18875 just working on the laptop for a few hours.

Enough of this shit. How many goddamn articles saying the same goddamn things have been posted on H&R in the last two days? Too many. Can't reason just say "Fuck off, slavers," and go back to talking about polling millenials and sexbots? I'm tired of the collective shitfit over evul Christfags and their much-maligned freedom of association.
How about polling Millenial sexbots?
How about poling Millenial sexbots?

I believe the technical term would be pegging.
How about polling Millenial sexbots?

What does this actually mean? Is Apple not selling products in Indiana anymore? Is it voiding customer care relatonships with owners of Apple products?
I am thinking yhis boycott is not anyhing of the sort, and if it actually was, Cook has some explaining to do to his shareholders.
Yep. I love how libertarians always talk about how they support the right to boycott in principle, but let someone actually try boycotting something the socons like and all of a sudden it's a problem. During the Chik-fil-a debacle I could not get anyone on here to admit that they supported the right of the boycotters. The answer was always to move the goalposts to talk about government actions.
Sure, throw tantrums all you want (like Irish), misread badly (like Mickey), but at the end of the day all you have is your own inconsistency on display for all to see.
During the Chik-fil-a debacle I could not get anyone on here to admit that they supported the right of the boycotters.
I did. Free association goes both ways.
I don't recall saying any boycotters, ever, didn't have the right to do so.
On Chik-fil-a I suspect I was mostly chuckling over the most failed boycott ever, since Chik-fil-a actually did more business due to the backlash.
Yeah. Me too. I wish they had them around here. I like their sandwiches.
I even worked for one back in high school. It was like going to church. I lasted a day.
Pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of the boycotters is taking the side of homophobic so-cons?
I asked this question the other day on on of the other (100) Indiana/boycott threads: what constitutes a "boycott?" I see less of a problem between private actors (and even less when it is individual to individual). I had quite a few friends and family "boycott" Chic-fil-a during that hub-bub (and even more deliberately go to the restaurant as a result). I don't see this situation as directly analogous. These "boycotters" are large companies or organizations attempting to blackmail a government by threatening to inflict economic pain on their entire citizenry, regardless of their own action. Not only that, they are attempting to extract legislation that would directly violate the religious consciences of individuals. If Tim Cook wants to say, "I'm not going to allow ApplePay to be installed in Saint John's Holy Catholic Bakery" because the purveyors of such baked goods refuse to cater to a same sex wedding that violates the precepts of their religion, have at it Tim.
"'what constitutes a "boycott?""'
It involves ostentatiously not-doing something you weren't going to do anyway
Nice, Gilmore, nice. How do I give you a citation everytime I use this quote?
Don't worry = every time you use that quote, an angel will fall from heaven...
.... because it hates gays.
*raises finger to lips, ponders, begins raising hand above head, stops, furrows brow, lowers hand, begins nodding in full agreement*
I'm in favor of free association in all its forms. Boycotts are great, even if they're directed against free association. Which I'm not convinced these boycotts are.
No one is saying anything about the liberty of people to boycott for whatever reason.
What we are talking about is the impropriety of doing so in order to coerce a state into adopting anti-liberty ordinances and policies.
This is wrong, even if not to the point where violence is an appropriate counter-response.
"your own inconsistency"
i missed the part where using Freedom of Association to prevent other people from Freedom of Association was supposed to the "consistent" POV
(It's Tonio's inner Bo coming out.
During the Chik-fil-a debacle I could not get anyone on here to admit that they supported the right of the boycotters.
Then you weren't paying close enough attention.
If you want ANY credability, you must be consistent in what you say and do.
Tim Cook has singled out Indiana, but not the other 19 states with similar laws on the books.
He has Apple stores in Teheran, which, if he showed up, would be immediately arrested and either hanged or decapitated for being gay. He does business in other countries with those same beliefs.
In addition, a majority of the manufacturing/assembly of his Apple products are performed in China, which has an atrocious civil and moral rights record.
I see before me a Monetary Moral Relativist.
I took a shit in Indiana once.
So did Tim Cook.
I am starting to wonder how much of this entire Gay Pizza legislation is a wagging-the-dog scenario from the left. Any time you see this much talking points distributed so evenly you have to wonder why.
It's not like there are other more important issues, like a potential presidential candidate having emailed state secrets on a private insecure server, or the current fate of the Nuclear age in middle east hanging in the balance with Mr. Ketchup doing his best Chaimberlin impression.
Nope, nothing to see here, back to bitching about gay pizzas.
There are thousands of businesses in Indiana just itching to discriminate against gays.
Really. they are almost as common as Campus Rape, which affects 1 in every 2 people. Male or female. Day or night. Constantly.
STEVE SMITH LIKES GAY PIZZA RAPE
To be fair, you guys don't even believe in the biggest threat we face.
I sincerely doubt there's anything more serious than Gay Pizza Denial
Retarded progs like you and Bo?
The bus-related pregnancy epidemic?
This is simply intolerance masquerading as a crusade for justice and equality ? a naked use of brute market power to legislate his views.
Apple may be completely full of shit here (see Apple business in gay-killing countries), but it's their right to be completely fucked in the corporate head and refuse to play. And they can afford to walk away, not that they ever will.
They're doing nothing more than signalling to their drooling sycophant customers and potential moral scold customers. Too bad Microsoft doesn't have the balls to step in and claim the business.
"He has Apple stores in Teheran(sp)"
hmm. Speaking of "boycotts"....
You don't understand. There must be four witnesses of Tim Cook doing gay things in Teheran before he is hanged there. That's like due process.
Being able to mention their religious beliefs when a mom and pop store is sued for not catering a gay wedding is the real violation of human rights.
"Being able to mention their religious beliefs when a mom and pop store is sued for not catering a gay wedding is the real violation of human rights."
I thought the real human rights violation was being told that you couldn't get freaky in cabs?
There was no freakiness. I was nearly passed-out drunk and lay down with my head in my companion's lap.
Your guess about the driver's religious persuasion was of course accurate.
Oh, and in case you're still in doubt, the driver quite clearly shouted at me that he didn't want "my kind" in his car.
Because he really would have denied you service of his cab if he didn't think you were sucking dick.
right.
dude, sometimes you have to go "ok, that wasn't the best example" and move on.
Haha, perhaps so.
Cite needed. I'm not finding any evidence that Tim Cook called for a boycott.
He didn't, nor did any other company. They are choosing to act on behalf of Apple. But reality doesn't fit the meme here. By the way, boycotts are all the rage here when they are done on behalf of the gun industry.
WTF are you babbling about?
Presumably it's a reference to Magpul pulling out of CO in response to their idiotic magazine ban, Berretta and Remington moving production from MD and NY in response to their stupid new gun laws, etc.
That's actually the gun industry boycotting states, rather than boycotts being done on their behalf, but that distinction is lost on Mr. From Lowell.
The left can be such vindictive little a-holes. They deserve whatever consequences they get from their misbegotten policies. Every bit of it.
Like Sullum says, this is progressive hypocrites playing partisan politics. They're effectively supporting oppression because they see this as a conservative cause that could theoretically slight one of their "protected groups". And there's no scenario in which Christians forced to serving gay weddings or Muslims forced to serve pork at a Catholic Mass ISN'T oppression. Did CA prosecute Denny's for expelling Manuel Ramos, even though he wasn't "technically" guilty?
These people don't merely see racism or bigotry as active in some aspects in life. No, entire industries and groups (tech, hollywood, banks, schools, corporations) are bigoted by default, and they exist only to turn profit and filter out the undesirables. A woman could lie about being raped or being discriminated by a tech firm, and these people berate those who raise objections.
Gays don't go to jail if they can't marry. I still can't marry my sister, multiple women, or eat dog meat or sexually defile a corpse, even though it doesn't hurt anyone. But I don't piss and moan every day of my life. I can't wait for this country to run out of money so I can laugh at these women. Let's see Mexico treat you better than America did.
The real issue that should be scaring the hell out of people is not about gay marriage or LGBT rights or any other progressive issue. The real issue is in the US you are no longer permitted to have any opinion contrary to the ideology of the left. IIf you open express an opinion they do not like, you risk having your life and business destroyed. The utter hypocrisy of corporations who do business in countries like Saudi Arabia and China with horrible human and civil rights records is appalling. 19 other states have similar laws yet not one of these companies has made a stink about those states, threatened boycotts or any other negative action. No celebrities are up in arms about what has happening in those states and no one is screaming about the rampant discrimination as a result of the RFFA laws. Why? because there is none which only proves the entire issue is phony and being ginned up by the left.
Other than this (and the linked article by the same author), anyone have any credible reports of a real business boycott of Indiana by anyone? I did find an article about a letter a number of businesses signed (no Apple though) protesting the Indiana law but nothing else.
Remind me of that time when Koch Industries threatened to pull up all economic stakes from a jurisdiction that passed laws it didn't like. Once you do that, find me the time they threatened to do the same when a jurisdiction didn't pass a law compelling violation of religious conscience.
Fear not, Jim Webb is looking out for Hihn!
"In case you're curious: Webb's second front-burner issue is Alzheimer's research."

Well the Koch brothers do oppose legislation promoted by the AGW religion, so there is that.
Well played, sir.

Tonio, this subject has driven you insane.
None of us thought this was popular, we supported it because it was the right thing to do. You don't support it because you're gay and are allowing your sexual orientation to overwhelm your principles.
"Rather than engage the overwhelming public rejection of this, and the implicit failure of libertarianism to win the hearts and minds of the public, you double down on the idiocy and keep wondering why people don't like libertarians more."
What idiocy is that, Tonio? Supporting something unpopular because you think it's right and because you believe in religious liberty as well as every other kind of liberty?
Where I come from, that's called having a spine rather than pathetically caving to the mob.

I don't? Where did I write that? Show me.
Seriously. Show me where I fucking wrote that. You're projecting.
I put it to you, Sir, that you are the one who is emotionally affected by this, having been driven into tantrum mode by an unpleasant truth.
You didn't have to include the entire exchange. We get it. Irish was right. A simple, "I concede your point, Irish" would have been sufficient.
What was that unpleasant truth again?
