It's long been said that the most dangerous place in Washington is between Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and a TV camera.
With news of the resignation of the historically awful Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the odds are good that Schumer will now ascend to the role of Senate Minority Leader. Indeed, Reid—who's one clear accomplishment after 600 years in office was putting the late Robert Byrd to sleep while talking about soldiers and war—has anointed Schumer his preferred successor.
So what kind of leader is Chuck Schumer? He is among the very most trivial politicians to serve in that crucible of triviality, mediocrity, and dead weight we call the U.S. Senate.
No issue is too stupid or inconsequential for Schumer to weigh in on, inevitably calling for a ban or regulation that serves no other possible purpose than to shine a light on the glory and grandeur of Chuck Schumer.
If we are living in anything like a "Libertarian Moment"—that technologically empowered drive toward greater and greater control over more aspects of our lives and a period of increasingly individualized and hyper-personalized ways of living—Schumer has standing athwart history and yelling "Stop!" every second of the day, herniating himself in a mad dash to be in charge of everything everywhere. His efforts no doubt get in the way and slow down innovation, progress, and a truly plural society, but that he has so far been incapable of killing off the future completely is cause for celebration.
Here's a list of quickly ginned-up headlines of what our next illustrious Senate leader has been up to over his time in Washington. Add your own in the comments.
All kidding aside, as a country we have a lot to be thankful for, a lot to be proud of, and a lot to be ashamed of.
And we have even more to be embarrassed by. Which brings us back to Chuck Schumer, our next Senate Minority Leader and a demonstrated foe of just about every possible innovation or reality that for whatever furshlugginer reason drives a bug up his ass. Including that time he called a flight attendant "a bitch" because she was enforcing a cell phone ban that I'm sure he's totally in favor of for everyone else.
If we have become an increasingly trivial country incapable of dealing with serious issues at all, much less in a rational and deliberate way, then we've really found our guy.

I have loathed this cocksucker for so long - he is such a fucking enemy of liberty. And the way he shows it best is his absolute wilingness to scrap the second amendment for everyone except his personal bodyguards.
"We have three branches of government. We have the house, the senate and the president."
Believe me, I detest Chucky as much as you do but, please, if you are going to leave a comment, do your homework so you don't sound like a moron. The three branches of government are the legislative branch, the judicial branch and the executive branch. They used to be co-equal branches but, unfortunately, the legislative branch has willingly given up most of its constitutionally granted powers and the other two branches were more than willing to take them.
Um, Monty Crisco was referring to what Schumer said about the three branches of government during a CNN interview; notice the quotation marks. So, yeah, careful using things like the "homework," "moron" comment as it may just come back to bite you.

There. Hope that removes all confusion as to who said that.
I've disliked Chucky Schumer since he ignored my question in Middle School. I don't remember the question, but I remember the slight. Nothing he's done since has improved my opinion of the 'man'.
I would love it if he met Theon Greyjoy's fate. But I feel like he's the Ramsey Snow in this real world we live in. Relishing in the torture and control, the manipulation all for the glory of daddy's love that will never come.
I'm from Illinois and I hang my head in shame that we have Dick Durbin, I would vote for Slick Turban before I would ever vote for D.D.
Biggest piece o' crap from Illinois since Barack...oh and let's not forget all the fine governors/inmates we've had.
Sheesh, I need to leave this State...I hear Ferguson has some real estate going for next to nothing.
In classical times, the sen?tus was supposed to be literally composed of wise old men. We've kept the old part, improved upon the men part to add women, and have done away with altogether even the ideal of them being wise. Or ethical. Or honest. Or competent. Or thrifty. Or immune from bribery.
In classical times, senators were old and were also wealthy - which (theoretically) gave them the leisure time and luxury of study to be wise.
Our senators enter office poor, or relatively so, and use the power of their office to get rich. The time spent getting rich takes away from the time needed to become wise.
The present US Senate has nothing on the old Roman Senate, which was divided between the Boni ("Good Men") who were rich kleptocrats in the bloodline that leads to Putin and the Populares who were scrofulous demagogues deluding the Plebs into supporting them so that they could become rich kleptocrats.
Yeah, the old Senate was populated by criminals. We are talking about government, after all. But they weren't dumb and entirely suicidal criminals. They also didn't have quite the same power as the U.S. Senate, at least on paper.

Hmm. Is there some modern-day political party structure that mirrors this? I'm stumped.
Yes, poor, poor Hillary. The strain of keeping up two mansions is killing her. And let's not forget the other Great White Vaginal Hope, Liz Warren. She's had to get by on a mere NFL-level salary all these years, aided by her hubby's NFL-size salary.
Wise guys generally make a bit of money, sometimes a lot and often get shot. These guys all make a lot of money and none get shot so they are clearly wise men. Chuck Shumer is a wise man of Gotham.
They don't even have to be wise, they just need enough humility to understand that maybe they don't have all the answers, and maybe they don't always know whats best for other people. Humility is the reason I'm a Libertarian, because I'm not arrogant enough to think I know how to run people's lives better then they do.
It's not bribery when they are immune to insider trading laws.

Fucking Canada. Why couldn't this kid be in America playing in a Sweet 16 Game tonight? I want to hear Verne say "Fuck" aboot 200 times during a telecast.
FTA: But for the past two years, Guy Carbagiale Fuck has been asked by his coaches to, literally, drop the f-bomb and go by "Guy Carbagiale" on the roster.
"I played in a very small city," said Fuck. "To avoid community conflict, they asked me to go by my first and middle name."
That kid is either the luckiest guy in the world or the unluckiest.
The Brazilian-born forward says his surname is actually pronounced "Foo-key" and only became an issue when he moved to the United States to play basketball. is trolling the hell out of Canada.
I call BS on that. How is it pronounced "Foo-key" when there's only one vowel? That doesn't work in Portuguese, or German, where he claims it originated. He says it means "fox" in German, but that's Fuchs, not Fuck.
I watch a lot of Brazilian soccer and most of them go by nicknames, many of which toss in a superfluous "ee" sound at the end. Like "Hulk" is sometimes pronounced "Hulky". So I get that part.
What I am not buying is the derivation from "Fuchs" or the notion that he was unaware of the English meaning - I mean, that is one English word that is pretty much known world-wide.
Strongly disagree with this article. I'm a New Yorker and I've watched Schumer since he first got elected to the US Senate and before, when he was a Congressman, and he is one of the smartest, most hard-working, most dedicated, and most level-headed people in the Senate. He's also one of the strongest voices against the anti-freedom, pro-government-in-your-doctor's-office, pro-government-in-your-wife's-genitals movement known as the right-to-life movement.
Yes as a Democrat he supports a lot of regulation, but nobody's perfect.
The proposition the Schumer really wasn't a bad Congressman jives with personal memory. He was roundly respected as a sane Democrat zealously pursuing the interests of his constituents amongst my father and his business associates, all of whom would normally never utter a positive word about a Democrat. But then he became a Senator and morphed into the Chucky Bitchtits we all know and love.
" He's also one of the strongest voices against the anti-freedom, pro-government-"
LEMME STOP YOU RIGHT THERE, TROLLY.
Thank you for the laugh. I had realized Chuck was so much for small government and limited regulations. You are a wise man and I cede the argument to you, as do all the commenters here. Reason was wrong for running that article with a horribly condescending attitude by Nick Gillespie. Thank you for setting the record straight.
What libertarians should object to is not Obamacare--after all, Obamacare lowers health-care costs, and therefore lowers taxes--but socialized medicine generally. And medicine was socialized in USA long before Obamacare. Specifically, medicine in USA was socialized in 1986, when Ronald Reagan signed legislation mandating that ERs accept and admit patients in need and provide care regardless of the patient's ability to pay for that care. Once it became possible to obtain care and pass the cost on to others rather than paying for it, medicine was effectively socialized, and the only thing left for good libertarians to do is try to minimize the costs and effects of already-socialized medicine.
So what? I come here almost everyday whether Drudge links to it or not. If you think Drudge linking to it means something nefarious then you are a fool.
Believe me, I detest Chucky as much as you do but, please, if you are going to leave a comment, do your homework so you don't sound like a moron. So there shouldn't be food and drug regulations on levels of plasticizers found in food? Nick, I've been thinking about your predicament and I think the best solution for you is to move to China where you and your kids can get your bisphenol a unadulterated and unregulated in your foodstuffs.
So there shouldn't be food and drug regulations on levels of plasticizers found in food?
No, there shouldn't. There should, however, be unlimited liability when additives cause harm. Food and drug regulations exempt companies from such liability.
where you and your kids can get your bisphenol
They can get that here, since the FDA has stated that "BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in foods". Sorry, whatever caused your mental problem, it isn't BPA.
About five or six years ago an invasive plant, didymo (aka "rock snot"), was found in the Esopus Creek, a famous trout stream.
Didymo is not a good thing but it can be contained by simple precautions ? mostly by not hopping from one stream to another using the same waders and boots, or without thoroughly cleaning them.
But Schumer seized the admittedly unique opportunity to come to Boiceville, N.Y. and make a speech decrying rock snot and demanding federal action.
There was no such action. A couple of years later, the river flooded, and the rock snot went away for the most part.
If only it were that easy to be rid of the senior senator from New York.
Zionist thug Schumer should be prosecuted for his part in the cover-up of the treason and mass murder that fraudulently justified the US wars of terror and aggression.
Over a number of years, I've wondered as to how Schumer was ever elected to any public office, also how he managed to retain such a seat, once obtained..
Never done a thing in his life
Harvard to GubMint, been there since.
Wife is also on the GubMint teat at CUNY in NYC.
And in the People's Republic of NYC, where the Sullivan gun laws prevent all but the connected from EVEN TOUCHING a handgun, Chucky's got concealed carry.
The only reason both Schumer and Clinton have served in the United States Senate is the Jewish vote. Considering the state of the world at the moment, one might wonder what they were thinking.
Schumer preens like a peacock. Just what America needs right now...
I get it, you don't like Schumer (and I agree with you). But I would respect your article more if you went the extra mile and actually proposed a better choice. Why not use this "Libertarian Moment" to look through the list of Democrats and find a reasonable (i.e better) candidate.
Are there any you could say "he/she doesn't suck"? Telling the legislature they are picking an idiot is a waste of your reach. Why not suggest an alternative to Schumer instead of playing their game of "mud-flinging"?
Telling the legislature they are picking an idiot is a waste of your reach. Why not suggest an alternative to Schumer instead of playing their game of "mud-flinging"?
I'm quite willing to believe that there are no better choices, and it isn't the job of libertarians to fix the Democrats' political problems. Furthermore, pointing out the incompetence of the front runner isn't mud-flinging.
This cockwomble epitomises the worst of all worlds - nanny state bullshit, "progressive" bullshit, and crony capitalism on-the-dick-of-big-business bullshit all in one.
I am sure he is more or less a neocon as far as foreign policy, to boot.

Bout the only thing I can say of value about Schumer is that the R party or L party could take just about any clip of the man being all smirky and smarmy on any theft of freedom he's supporting and use it to good effect during campaign season.
Yep. In one way, I actually think more of the Dems. You know they are going to do everything in their power to screw over you. The Republicans lie about how they are going to fix things then screw you.
"Schumer calls for federal review of grill brush safety, possible recall."
Can I get the guy to come by and shake the bed along about 6 or 6:30? I mean, getting up in the morning is really testing my ability as an individual actor.
BTW, Tony should LOVE the guy; he'll tell Tony when to pee and everything!
Chuckie Cheese Schumer reminds me of a weasel, always getting in the way of progress. Like this article said about Obama pushing Healthcare before the economy. Today we now know everyone is spending most of their money on, is Healthcare which is why our economy is failing, it doesn't contribute to the GDP. Schumer and the others knew this but, allowed Obama to wreck the economy anyway.
I must vehemently object to how Schumer is characterized in the headline. "Trivial" assumes a certain level (however low) of legitimacy. Chuck's perspectives would have to rise several levels in relevance to achieve trivial status. This headline is an insult to sock sorters worldwide.
Schumer was a dirtbag from the beginning. Back in the 90s, when the government decided to show the peasants that it had the power by incinerating a bunch of them in Waco, and burying the evidence with bulldozers the next day, new Senator Schumer served as the government apologist by attacking every witness who countered the official line.
Chuck Schumer may end up being the only minority leader voters would be willing to vote against ever becoming the Majority Leader. After seeing Schumer in action it's quite possible there is no more partisan hack in the Senate, although he is a Democrat so he does have some stiff competition.
The one famous quote I remember from Schumer was during the Clinton Impeachment when he said, "This isn't about him being guilty it's about not letting the Republicans win." or something close to that. I found that just amazing, it's just fine for a President of the United States to lie under oath, in Schumer's eyes, and if Republicans want to call him on it, he won't allow them to.
The article totally failed to mention his proposed ban on anyone EVER returning to the US who'd changed citizenship to avoid high US taxes. That's my personal favorite.

Firearms availability is in no way correlated with gun violence. Many states with the very highest rates of gun ownership have the lowest rates of gun violence - places like Wyoming, Vermont, Montana, Idaho, Maine, etc have extremely high rates of gun ownership. They also have very low crime rates. They also have very low black and Hispanic populations. The dismal fact of the matter is that crime in this nation, particularly violent crime, is an almost uniquely black, and to a somewhat lesser extent, Hispanic problem. Back these two groups out of overall US crime stats and the US is one of the most crime-free nations on earth, with far less crime than the UK and now even Sweden, which has seen its crime rate skyrocket since they rather idiotically began admitting Somalis to their country, doubtless as an object moral lesson to we swinish, loutish, and racist Americans. But of course we must go on with the endless farce of the eternal "root cause of violence in America."
Mine too. But 10 isn't enough to really get a grasp on the magnitude of the problem. Add Reid, Pelosi, Durbin and 75% of the rest of the Dems and quite a few Republicans.
Hurl!
Actually, Schumer is the perfect replacement for Reid. They are both corrupt and ignorant.
You left out the dollar-a-bullet tax he used to espouse.

Yeah, the old Senate was populated by criminals. We are talking about government, after all. But they weren't dumb and entirely suicidal criminals. They also didn't have quite the same power as the U.S. Senate, at least on paper.
The one way the Roman Senate was vastly better than the American Senate is that no politician has ever been stabbed to death on Capital Hill.
If you get all those politicians in one place and all of them come out of it alive, what's even the point?
And with that, I've just placed myself on an FBI watch list.
I assumed that everyone who logs in to this website was already on an FBI watch list.
The one way the Roman Senate was vastly better than the American Senate is that no politician has ever been stabbed to death on Capital Hill.
No, but one senator damn near beat another to death on the floor of the Senate
He survived. Beating FAIL.

Really? Name 5 for which that has been true in the last 20 years.

Well thank you for that nightmare.
No thank you.
Voted for the Iraq War, of course, just like Reid and Daschle before him. And like Hilary.

Sure he's trivial, but as a hetero-normative patriarch, I'm personally just happy that we'll finally have a D-cup in a senate leadership position.
Finally, a mental image that will give me a proper wank.

"No, no, no. I want to have kids, I want to spread the Fuck last name," he said."
So... fucking for Fuck's sake ?
Chuckie is just waiting for summer nights.
Your opinion is rather single issue oriented - I guess the tsunami of evidence above just doesn't matter, eh?
Sure Schumer wants to ban virtually everything that makes him feel scared, but he's cool with abortions so fuck it.
Well, what other "choice" does he have?
It has been thoroughly studied - at great taxpayer expense - and proven that anyone who needs to put "intelligent" in their internet name isn't..
NEXT!
You never read THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS? What kind of childhood did you have?
Watership Down
So he wants government in almost everything, but since he leaves your pet issues alone he's okay?
Fuck off, slaver.
All the right-to-lifers want to do is regulate abortion. Nobody's perfect! DURRRRRRRR
No, rtls want to BAN abortion, not regulate it. They are anti-freedom and ought to be driven out of the Libertarian Party.
Feel free to come back anytime. Bye now!
"He's also one of the strongest voices against the anti-freedom, pro-government-in-your-doctor's-office,"
Are you saying he voted against Obamacare ?
Congratulations on exposing your liberal ignorance. Toad doesn't begin to describe you.
Ah, I see where your problem is.
By 3pm, a talk show host in Phila. (AM 1210) was reading Nick's list and agreeing what an "a-hole" Schumer is.
Drudge linked here.
So what? I come here almost everyday whether Drudge links to it or not. If you think Drudge linking to it means something nefarious then you are a fool.
Schumer also banned alt-text.
Oof, *hangs head in shame*
Nice job, Democrats. Replace dumb with dumber.
Drudge linked this article. Let's see what happens.
So, did we ever find out which mobster Reid pissed off in order to earn such a thorough working over?
For his own sake, I hope Chucky is better at not pissing off the Wrong People.
Nick should add a clip of Chuck Schumer at the Waco hearings. Everyone needs to see that.
Meet the new boss same as the old boss? We trade one despicable hack for a newer model.
He motioned to ban bullying:

Believe me, I detest Chucky as much as you do but, please, if you are going to leave a comment, do your homework so you don't sound like a moron. The three branches of government are the legislative branch, the judicial branch and the executive branch. They used to be co-equal branches but, unfortunately, the legislative branch has willingly given up most of its constitutionally granted powers and the other two branches were more than willing to take them.
Not according to perfect SAT Schumer. The three branches are House, Senate and President. Sen Schumer is the perfect NY'er, a whining ninny.
So, is Harry pissed off at his comrades or what? Telling them to replace him with Charlie Schumer is a pretty loud and clear "fuck you" to the senate.

Most honest comment I've read.
Guy's a complete shitstain.
So there shouldn't be food and drug regulations on levels of plasticizers found in food? Nick, I've been thinking about your predicament and I think the best solution for you is to move to China where you and your kids can get your bisphenol a unadulterated and unregulated in your foodstuffs.
And who exactly enforces these regulations?
Yes, only government can save us from the modern scourge of the deadly bisphenol A.
No, there shouldn't. There should, however, be unlimited liability when additives cause harm. Food and drug regulations exempt companies from such liability.
How about a reasonable opposing candidate?
Oh boy, one asshole to be replaced by another asshole.
Zionist thug Schumer should be prosecuted for his part in the cover-up of the treason and mass murder that fraudulently justified the US wars of terror and aggression.
Fool. I hope the next terrorist attack takes out morons like you.
Over a number of years, I've wondered as to how Schumer was ever elected to any public office, also how he managed to retain such a seat, once obtained..
The Jewish vote. Wonder how that's working for them...
That and two words: New York
Never done a thing in his life
Harvard to GubMint, been there since.
Wife is also on the GubMint teat at CUNY in NYC.
And in the People's Republic of NYC, where the Sullivan gun laws prevent all but the connected from EVEN TOUCHING a handgun, Chucky's got concealed carry.
I guess somes is just mo' equal than others.
The only reason both Schumer and Clinton have served in the United States Senate is the Jewish vote. Considering the state of the world at the moment, one might wonder what they were thinking.
Schumer preens like a peacock. Just what America needs right now...
Hey Nick,
I get it, you don't like Schumer (and I agree with you).
Perhaps there are no "better" choices.
I'm quite willing to believe that there are no better choices, and it isn't the job of libertarians to fix the Democrats' political problems. Furthermore, pointing out the incompetence of the front runner isn't mud-flinging.
Poor Chucky, finally a home for the senile has an opening. Good for Chucky.
This cockwomble epitomises the worst of all worlds - nanny state bullshit, "progressive" bullshit, and crony capitalism on-the-dick-of-big-business bullshit all in one.
I am sure he is more or less a neocon as far as foreign policy, to boot.
Correction:
Harry Reid announced his retirement, not his resignation.
You would think that all you "smart people" could understand the distinction.
Good point, Ad. Everything in this article is thereby void.

Bout the only thing I can say of value about Schumer is that the R party or L party could take just about any clip of the man being all smirky and smarmy on any theft of freedom he's supporting and use it to good effect during campaign season.
It's not that Republican pols and their ideas are good, but that the Democrat pols and their ideas are so incredibly bad.
Something about a tiny little "porky" amendment?
Like jumping from the pan into the fire.
How about how Chucky kicked off the banking collapse by leading the run on IndyMac bank. Talking about a leader acting irresponsibly.
Schmucky serves a purpose - he reminds Americans of how much New York and New Yorkers suck.

Anyone else remember his revolting performance at the hearings on the Waco siege?
"His efforts no doubt get in the way and slow down innovation, progress, and a truly plural society, ..."
The opposite of progress truly is Congress.
