Police Union Boss Defends Killing of Tamir Rice: 'When We Tell You to Do Something, Do It'

I can't imagine a more barbaric take on the wholly unjustified killings of Tamir Rice and John Crawford than the one given by Jeffrey Follmer, boss of the Cleveland Police union, on MSNBC recently. Talking Points Memo has a summary of his monstrous statements:
Follmer referred to the slain 12-year-old as "the male" throughout the interview and defended the officer.
"The video clearly shows, and by the officer's statement, that they were justified in the deadly force," Follmer said.
"You're saying that the video clearly shows that the 12-year-old boy was an imminent lethal threat to the officers?" Melber asked.
"Oh, absolutely. I don't know if you didn't see it, but yeah absolutely," the officer replied.
Eventually, Follmer dismissed Melber's questions about excessive force and wrapped up the debate with a message to Americans.
"How about this: Listen to police officers' commands. Listen to what we tell you, and just stop," he said. "I think that eliminates a lot of problems."
"I think the nation needs to realize that when we tell you to do something, do it," he added.
Where to begin? First of all, the video does not show that Rice was an imminent threat. It shows nothing of the sort. The police arrived on the scene and killed Rice immediately. If there was actual justification, we certainly don't see it. (Keep in mind that there are big questions about the officer's fitness and mental competence.)
And although Follmer didn't specifically address the Crawford shooting, video of that encounter is even clearer. Crawford had no time to react—none whatsoever—to the cops before they killed him.
Just as bad is Follmer's message to all Americans: submit and obey the police. Nevermind that that advice would not have helped Rice or Crawford, who were shot on sight before they were even capable of obeying. This is the attitude of a public employee? Someone paid by the taxpayers to serve the public?
I don't know if Follmer really believes what he is saying. I think there is a chance that he doesn't—he's just saying it because it's his job as head of a police union to always defend every single one of his officers' decisions and treat any criticism of them as a declaration of war. Incidentally, he just demonstrated why police reform is impossible as long as public employee unions remain powerful.
I hope MSNBC's left-leaning viewers were paying close attention.

It isn't uncommon for me to meet people who believe that what happened in Germany in the 1930's and '40's couldn't possibly happen here. Ever. Follmer is proof positive it could.
Thats because America is magically different because...
..it just is, BardMetal! It just is. Can't happen here, nope.
Exactly they wouldn't really be Nazis. They wouldn't have the same accents, and besides we wouldn't call them that. Yep can't happen here.
Their uniforms probably wouldn't be nearly as snappy.
I dunno, every time I see a police chief on tv these days they've got stars on their epaulets and decorations and badges and all the other accoutrements of a snappy uniform.
They are just missing that little button tab ribbon the wehrmacht had in the middle of the feld gray tunic.
Today's police unis lack that Hugo Boss panache.
It's hard to be snappy when you're pushing 400 lbs no matter what you're wearing.
And with the passing of the WW2 generation the horrors of Nazism have passed from a memory to a history of a bygone error. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
"a bygone error"
It works.
You expect that the horrors of communism would still be reasonably fresh in some older immigrant's minds, but the media and liberal college professors have done a pretty thorough job of hiding those things from anyone younger than 30 or so.
My best friend's FIL, fled Nazi Germany at the beginning of the war. He claims the similarities are unsettling.
The police in this country no longer serve the public. They serve the politicians that guarantee their pension and benefits. If the politicians decide to use the police as a truncheon against the public, what are the police going to do? Give up their cushy jobs for the good of the community? The few that do will be quickly replaced.
One difference however is that Americans are still pretty well armed, and cops are basically cowards.
I think the 2nd amendment has a created a balance of power of sorts in this country between freedom and tyranny. There is still a limit to how far tyranny-wise America can go.
Tyranny has to limited enough to where most Americans can still convince themselves that "it can't happen to me"
You're right, but I at least get the feeling that most well armed Americans tend to side with the police/military. I worry that a fair number would join them.
Please don't lump the military in with pigs.
Definitely not the same.
This. I'm not military but I know many vets, and most of them have a certain distrust for the "following orders" argument. Among dozens of other differences...
Was not. I don't know many cops. I know a couple ex-military. In that admittedly small sample, the military guys seem to have their heads screwed on muuuuuch better.
I was speaking about the attitudes of the public.
As far as your average gunowner, I think it's a function of "it's not happening to me," or at least that it's not getting a lot of air time. How often do the airport gun transport stories out of NJ/NY get reported on during the nightly news, much less with any sense of journalistic outrage?
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out?
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out?
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out?
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me?and there was no one left to speak for me."
-- Martin Niem?ller
Point taken. However, in terms of Americans being armed it seems like most/all of these incidents/murders occur in urban areas that have been largely disarmed. I wonder if people in those areas will just get sick of being murdered randomly by the police and take it upon themselves to re-arm, and if they do what happens then? It's not like the politicians are going to allow that to happen.
Germany was armed, too. Hilter had all the guns confiscated.
And another difference is that the gap between the abilities of the SS and the average person was fairly small. Currently in the U.S., the local cops have been armed to the teeth by military surplus.
Not really.
It wasn't a blanket ban but he picked winners and losers, didn't he?
Most of it was done before Hitler, and Hitler actually relaxed some of the gun laws.
Is that just a semi-popular mistake to make?
I do believe there is a quotation from Hitler about the streets not being safe for the SS if the population was allowed to have firearms. Maybe that's what I'm thinking of.
All the same: Germany was armed, too.
I'm no expert. I went to say something similar to someone at CNN but when I went to cite it, I couldn't support it. I think it's one of those internet memes that is assumed to be true.
I've done the same. In reality, I'm almost positive certain groups (Jews, communists) were banned from owning firearms while more sympathetic or politically sought after swathes of the country were allowed to in an act of nationalism/populism.
"All the same: Germany was armed, too."
Was it? Even if Germany didn't have any previous gun control laws, how well armed was the populace, particularly the Jewish populace?
Did Germany ever have anything resembling American gun culture?
Well, just the Jooos...
On November 11, 1938, the Regulations Against Jews' Possession of Weapons was promulgated by Minister of the Interior, Wilhelm Frick. This regulation effectively deprived all Jews living in those locations of the right to possess any form of weapons including truncheons, knives, or firearms and ammunition.[5] Some police forces used the pre-existing "trustworthiness" clause to disarm Jews on the basis "the Jewish population 'cannot be regarded as trustworthy'".
Wiki so grain of salt.
So he only disarmed the population he planned on oppressing?
Well, since we can't get to the bottom of whether Hitler ACTUALLY effected gun control (JESUS!!), were antebellum slaves allowed to own firearms?
I wouldn't call being a cop a cushy job. Most have to deal with drunk obnoxious assholes routinely. They often deal with the same jerkoffs over and over again.
Not making excuses that's what the job is. But if I had to deal with child rapists, abusers, thieves, liars, and assorted dickheads as my bulk of interaction with the public I'd have an attitude too.
That's why I'm not a cop, and to ask someone to do that job and be full of sunshine and unicorn farts is a tall order.
Yet despite these sensational stories most cops are closer to this than the Nazi in this story.
But if I had to deal with child rapists, abusers, thieves, liars, and assorted dickheads as my bulk of interaction with the public I'd have an attitude too.
Please let us know the next time you are compelled to do anything against your will. Cops are extremely well paid when factoring in the minimal education and intelligence required, the fringe benefits and the pension vesting schedule. It is not remotely sunshine and unicorn farts to expect agents of the state to understand who works for who and put away the attitude.
Every occupation holds elements unforeseen upon entry. Even accountants and lawyers deal with things they'd rather not. If it raises to the unbearable, (and this threshold varies greatly depending on obligation, other job opportunities, etc.) you quit.
My point was it's NOT easy being a cop, you seem to agree. And despite the horrific examples of the a-holes given here, most cops suck it up and do a decent job, some do an exemplary job.
If you truly believe that cops have limited intelligence, why do you expect each one to be a cross between Steven Hawking and David Niven?
So how do ER personnel manage to be professional and courteous? Because I guarantee you that a big city ER staff sees more of the "dregs" in a standard shift than any given cop does in a month.
Mostly those forks are a different breed. And...oh.. the people on the gurney aren't trying to harm or kill anyone...anymore at least
If the police treat me with respect, I will reciprocate.
Unfortunately, we live in a Police State, as evidenced by the the militarization of the police, the continual violence perpetrated against us by SWAT and other "LEO" death squads.
The reaction we are seeing in the streets is we have reached a tipping point into actual revolution.
To resolve this, the militarization of the police must be reversed, SWAT teams must be reduced by 95% and only used per their initial intent, and police officers must be held personally culpable for their actions. The shield of sovereign immunity must be eliminated.
We must go to a society where as Jefferson remarked: "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. "
The government must fear, and be subservient to the people. Otherwise, this violence against the functionaries of the American Police State will only escalate.
I had one of my liberal friends ask me if I seriously thought that Obama and the government were tyrants.
Obama is not a tyrant. He's not Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler, etc. But it's very likely he's a means to those ends.
You don't go from a republic to a fascist state over the course of a few years. It happens over decades and there are few people who are observant enough to see it happen.
By definition, if the majority of people understood what was happening, then they would put a stop to it. But a majority doesn't understand, and that might be the scariest part.
In Germany it took about 6 or 8 years.
Nazi's got trounced in elections throughout the 20s. It was only after the depression hit that the Nazis actually gained any kind of power.
At Versailles after WWI, even John Maynard Keynes was trying to tell everybody to limit the reparations that Germany would have to pay. If the German currency collapsed, then it would create a politically unstable situation that a possible tyrant could take advantage of.
If/when the U.S. suffers another major terrorist attack, we'll look back fondly to the carefree days of 2014.
Sadly I fear you are correct. When given a choice between freedom or security the United States chooses security every time.
I don't know if it is the people so much as the government and the media.
There are damned few 'leaders' who have the courage to stand up and say "We have been wounded, but we will not throw out our freedoms just to forestall further wounds."
Adults know that things go wrong, even in the best of circumstances; children run from the bogeymen and try to hide in the closet.
The government wants us to be children, not adults.
Nothing's impossible, I guess. But I think it is very unlikely to happen here (based on my assumptions about what you mean by "what happened in Germany").
Exactly. The uniforms are a little different, and the Nazis didn't have steroids, but other than that, Hitler would be welcomed with open arms by today's Law-n-Order Gestapo.
I watched the video of the encounter with the 12yo. A police murder, pure and simple. He got out of the fucking car and shot him. PERIOD!
That pig murdered a 12yo boy for playing with a toy.
Heros all.
Yep. Tamir Rice never had a chance to "do as he was told" because the fucking cowards drove right up to him, jumped out, and shot him. If they told him anything, which was most likely incoherent screaming of "Drop the Gun!", the child was given no opportunity to comply.
So...comply or die, but sometimes we won't give you the opportunity to comply.
I really want to know if the conversation between the rook and his FTO was captured on audio. I think they discussed and decided to shoot before they even screeched onto the scene.
"Yep. Tamir Rice never had a chance to "do as he was told" because the fucking cowards drove right up to him, jumped out, and shot him. If they told him anything, which was most likely incoherent screaming of "Drop the Gun!", the child was given no opportunity to comply."
Coward is right. The cop who shot Tamir Rice is the one who was such an incompetent that his mom actually went to one of his teachers at the police academy and told the guy that her son would sometimes cry while doing his homework.
Also, the cop who killed Rice used to have breakdowns at the gun range and sometimes would go in a corner and cry, according to one of his teachers at the academy.
Irish, what you pejoratively call "breakdowns" I call "21st century sensitive male."
I love how these cops are doubling down on stupid. The only thing dumber then killing a 12 year old kid on camera is to later go on TV, after most people have turned against you, and basically say it was justified, and you would do it again.
It's like a an accused rapist going on TV and saying "Hell yeah that bitch deserved it."
It's more like the rapist's friend saying it. The rapist (or in this case, murderer) at least is acting in self-interest, or distorted view of it, in defending themselves. If they were right in the head they wouldn't be a rapist/murderer to begin with.
What's this guy's excuse? It's his job? Fuck that. It's evil, pure and simple.
When you are deep throating government cock, it's kind of hard to notice what's going on around you.
I wonder what percentage of MSNBC viewers are secretly wishing that anyone with a firearm be summarily and extrajudicially executed by the heroes in blue.
A lot of leftists comments, whenever the subject of gun control comes up, pretty much threaten just that. Thats how I learned that leftists weren't really anti-gun, or even anti-violence, they were just opposed to people like me owning a gun, and seemed more then willing to use violence to prevent me.
Never quite understood why the idea of a private citizen with a weapon offended them so much, but a cop, whom they often accuse of being racist, did not.
Cops are agents of the state, and according to leftists in this country (bless their sheltered lives) the state isn't capable of evil, only good, so therefore the state's agents are also only capable of good and not evil. Only raving lunatics are evil, and they aren't in government, and it's better to make sure the raving lunatic (and everyone else) doesn't have a gun to impede the PROGRESS of the state.
Plus, they have "training", and a badge, and permission. And the police *need* guns because of all the other guns out there.
Exactly, just like all other agents of the state they are appropriately credentialed and therefore never mistaken or capable of doing evil because they know how to follow procedures.
One of the few memorable West Wing lines was Ainsley Hayes saying "it's not that you guys don't like guns, it's that you don't like the people that like guns."
I would go a step further and say they don't like the attitudes people that like guns have towards government control.
There is definitely a culture war aspect to left's hatred toward gun owners. Come to think of it, the Right's love of cops seems to be rooted in culture war bullshit too.
Hmmm...how do people on the "left" & the "right" manage to squeeze past each other on this ground? They must find each other's presence very uncomfortable.
I don't know if Follmer really believes what he is saying. I think there is a chance that he doesn't
So then he's a liar. Are you calling the police union liars?
I don't think he's lying. I think he's a full-on authoritarian and I hope he ends up like Ceausescu.
I think he's not lying. In fact his statement is accurate because that's how American LE does business. They all conduct themselves in accordance with this extralegal assumption in place.
I suggest people stop using the "law enforcement" euphemism.
Understood. "Cops" is too casual sometimes and many "LEOs" are not what most people would consider cops.
Brownshirts? Enforcers?
Any other suggestions?
PIGS
"police" is enough.
"I hope MSNBC's left-leaning viewers were paying close attention."
That's funny in a sick kind of way.
You heard it here, ladies. If someone claiming to be a police officer ever pulls you over on a dark street, with nobody around, always do whatever they say, no matter what.
Yep if he orders you to give him a blowjob, you better drop to your knees and deliver without question or hesitation.
America, home of the free!!!
I think Shakespeare was wrong, lawyers should come second.
You mean Jack Cade?
Is there anybody more repugnant in this country than Jeffrey Follmer? I cannot think of anyone.
Jeffrey Follmer: Union Scum; Police Scum; Unfit to clean up after the elephants in the circus.
The only think I'm shocked by is that the pig doesn't have a thick Cleveland accent.
I'm shocked he's not a lard ass.
He strikes me as one of those cops that trains hard because he thinks its fucking war zone out there.
I saw on the news this morning that cops and firefighters are the most obese profession. This was local NYC news, not some Kocktopus-funded fringe group.
How was he NOT a lard ass? Looked like one to me... a bald one...
Well, I didn't actually watch the video. The headshot looks fairly normal (on the roided out side).
Utterly fucking disgusting.
Rockstar Games was spot on in putting "Obey and Survive" on the LSPD cars in GTA V.
"Obey and MAYBE We Let You Survive" would be more accurate
I'm 100% sure he believes every word of what he says. He's just that delusional.
As an example, look at Dunphy's bloviating in the cop t-shirt thread earlier today (which might be his worst performance since the guy who was shot by police after answering his door carrying a gun in the middle of the night). Police officers are just that delusional.
There I go, wishing for an actual and real Hell again.
What. A. Cunt.
The transformation from public servants to public enemies is nearly complete. And God help these smug fascist pigs when that finally happens. They're gonna need all the fucking help they can get.
Homer: [angrily] You know, one day, honest citizens are gonna stand up to you crooked cops!
Chief Wiggum: [alarmed] They are? Oh no! Have they set a date?
You jerk, you made me laugh out load when I just want to be pissed off!
An icon of the two most regressive institutions in modern society. Deadly and evil combination.
There are two cops married into my family, and even they are wondering what the hell is wrong with some of their brethren.
You have my condolences.
Beyond horrible.
Drunk with power, fat and psychopathic is no way to go through life, son.
So far, unfortunately, it is.
I'm not saying someone should call in an anonymous tip that he has a substantial quantity of meth in his apartment, I'm just saying if someone did and he got some teeth busted in during a no knock raid, I wouldn't shed a tear.
I read somewhere Jeffrey Follmer was instrumental in the filming of "The Interview".
I heard he drew a picture of Mohammed in a skirt.
I also heard he is a close associate of AAW and likes to engage in similar activities.
When you talk about two of our officers, you're talking about all of us..."
And there you have it. The lousy piece of shit won't condemn the murderous actions of another cop simply because he's part of his tribe. Us vs Them.
Someday you might get your wish for real, Mr. Follmer
Fine. I take him at his word. And when it is proven that the cops EXECUTED a twelve year old and NUMEROUS other people in America, I say we follow his thinking and treat ALL cops accordingly.
Wow, these guys are really just coming out and saying that refusing to obey any order from the police = death sentence.
Fuck these guys.
Generally speaking, I am appalled at the idea of wishing serious misfortune on someone that you have never met. But if this episode is an accurate reflection of Follmer's character, then I do wish he suffers some violent incident in the not too distant future.
I'm not appalled anymore. I hope the SOB gets firebombed in his patrol car. Maybe the rest of them would get the message that if the justice system is unwillingly to uphold the law, the people will act accordingly.
I'm hoping for a friendly-fire fuck up. Seems the most fitting end to me.
^This. Not a big fan of vigilantism, but at some point people have to put the fear back in these cocksuckers. Make them think twice about murdering the next 12-year-old.
Breathe easy as long as you're not committing a victimless crime. Otherwise, we'll kill you.
REally? Eric Garner is dead and it is hard to see that he wasn't engaging in a victimless crime (not at the time of course... at the time he was minding his own business after breaking up a fight..)
Oh right ...*not*...
"I hope MSNBC's left-leaning viewers were paying close attention."
Yeah because all of our resident Lefty trolls are on this thread expressing their outrage to this, right? I mean liberals care so much about this issue I am sure they are all just dying to come in and show their solidarity to their Librarian brothers?
Liberals don't give a fuck about police brutality. They think it is fucking great as long as it is applied to the right people. Janet Reno burned 90 Americans to death on national TV and she is a fucking liberal hero to this day.
They're in the other thread claiming that adherence to the Bill of Rights is racist.
...Librarian brothers..
I'm starting to think you do this on purpose...
Maybe they would want to stand with Sugar Free on something?
"I mean liberals care so much about this issue I am sure they are all just dying to come in and show their solidarity to their *Librarian* brothers?"
Never change, John.
I sorta wished he typed 'Liberian brothers' instead!
John, you are such an asshole!
They support Janet Reno because she single handedly put a stop to ritualized child abuse in preschools!
She certainly smoked out the perpetrators!
That'll earn you a *narrow gaze*...
And by American uncles on Cuban kids!
The delusion that cop supporters have is that an out of control paramilitary organization will only confine its attentions to other people.
I see this in nearly everybody who doesn't think we have a serious problem with the cops.
"What makes you think you are immune to being given multiple colonoscopies after a traffic stop? to having flashbangs thrown into your house and your dogs shot in a wrong-door raid? etc etc."
"Because it hasn't happened to anybody I know personally."
"I'm sure that as soon as that alligator is done eating he will be quite full and be no threat whatsoever"...
(Keep in mind that there are big questions about the officer's fitness and mental competence.)
Uh, no there aren't. He's unfit. He should be sitting in a jail cell awaiting a death sentence.
I hope MSNBC's left-leaning viewers were paying close attention.
Because Castro and Hugo Chavez eliminated all the cops...
Anyone else notice how our resident progs don't wade into these types of threads?
The only practical way to fight uniformed thuggery is through political action. The Libertarian Party should be leading the fight.
But, unless you seek martyrdom, you should not get belligerent with a cop, throw a punch at him, reach into your pocket for a cellphone, or do anything else to set off his hair-trigger reflex to maim or kill you. I've talked my way out of a few minor scrapes by being polite while seething inside.
I've talked my way out of a few minor scrapes by being polite while seething inside.
And cop tribal members like Dunphy think everyone is polite them because they love them.
Not because they are afraid of them.
One question that generally gets at least a pause out of cop supporters is this:
"When you're driving and you see a cop car or motorcycle, does that make you happy or do you tense up? Do you check your rearview mirror until he's out of sight? Why?"
Now I agree it's best to be prudent, but ultimately that's what they want you to think. It makes their job easier.
No matter what political action is taken, the state needs agents to enforce the law and these agents will always have certain powers other don't, including initiating violence in the name of the law, regardless whether they turn out to be correct or not in their assessment. This will continue to happen so long as police are officially designated as law enforcement officers and not security or peace officers.
I've talked my way out of a few minor scrapes by being polite while seething inside.
And now think about the people who WERE polite and it made no difference in how the cop treated them. (sarcasmic or me, for example)
I didn't say it was foolproof. But what is the answer, to get belligerent because that works better than politeness?
Scum.
About John Crawford, police stated he was threatening them with a gun. That's all we had to go on and what was reported through the news outlets. From the previous Reason post:
"Claims in some media outlets that Crawford had been walking around the store and pointing the gun at people also seem false"
Then 2 months later after the story died down, we get surveillance footage which showed nothing of the sort. He just picked up a BB gun and was walking and talking on the phone, which for some reason triggered a sudden death sentence right there for him in the Walmart.
Cops lie. A lot.
They have to, really, given what they do and who they are.
They also leaked that Wilson had a fractured orbital socket and that Garner threw an officer through a plate glass window.
And the same authoritarian copsuckers lick up and repeat it over and over again until it becomes truth to them.
The version I heard was that Wilson threw Garner down to prevent Garner from going thru the plate glass window.
Well, someone must've phoned in a complaint, because the SWAT team ran into the store. So it didn't start with the police, but they did no assessment of the scene.
Why are all cops skinheads these days? That seems to be the standard anymore. Used to be the mustache was the cliche, now they all want to look like gangbangers. Crips aren't the only gang that wears blue so I guess that makes sense.
Two reasons. First is intimidation, and second is that they imagine they are soldiers.
So doubling down on everyone the cops shoot? Nothing can go wrong there!
"Where to begin? First of all, the video does not show that Rice was an imminent threat. It shows nothing of the sort"
And this is another example of how journalism is dead on the major networks. How easy would it be to just say, "OK, here is the video, show me the part where the "male" is an imminent, lethal threat"? Cop then says blah blah blah bullshit bullshit, etc. Then the interviewer can ask why, if the "male" was a lethal threat, did the cops drive up to him?
What do they teach in journalism school?
What do they teach in journalism school?
Rule 1: Never orphan the balls.
Acquiescence.
No, this is fine, because everybody saw from the video that there's no way what he's saying can be true, so they just left him hanging out there.
Appalling interview. If Ted Cruz had been so inarticulate I wonder if the anchor would have been so easy on him? That meathead was a fucking masterpiece of marble-mouthed inanities. Couldn't put an appropriate proposition where it was needed if he had a fucking diagram of the sentence. His talking points weren't even coherent as he presented them, and eventually sorta conceded that freedom of speech was allowed. Sorta. Still mealy-mouthed, this dipshit then goes on to double-down on the basic theory that is "don't make us kill you". I love how he invokes his own children and that they are respectful and do what cops tell them. NO, they IMMEDIATELY state that their father is head of the police union in ANY confrontation with the police and are immediately treated accordingly. What a complete piece of shit.
There must be something we can do to keep guns out of the hands of these people.
When we tell you to resign, do it. Resign. Your attitude is unacceptable. It results in 12-year-old boys and unarmed individuals getting blown away without just cause. Resign.
Backpfeifengesicht
If the police treat me with respect, I will reciprocate.
