Cleburne Police Department

Amanda Henderson of Cleburne, Texas should have made sure her dogs were securely locked up. Otherwise, her six-month-old pit bull, Maximus, might still be alive.

Maximus and two other pit bulls escaped Henderson's property while she was shopping for school supplies for her kids in August. Officer Kevin Dupre responded to a call and shot Maximus several times, killing the pet.

Henderson, who says she never received an explanation of what happened, just came forward to local media about the incident because she recently got her hands on Dupre's body camera, and she says it contradicts his official account of what took place.

You can watch and judge for yourself whether or not the officer's action appeared to be justified. Warning: The video is graphic:

Dupre's police report reads, "I raised my duty weapon to the ready position – pointed at the growling dog's head. As soon as I lifted my pistol, the dog began coming up the hill, continuing to growl and display its teeth…I fired three shots at it."

Henderson sees something different take place. "You see the dogs are happy and playing, they don't even realize [Dupre] is there until he calls them over. They say there's more to the story, but there's no more there. There's no reason he couldn't have used a tranquilizer, pepper spray, a taser instead."

In fact, an animal control officer collected one of Henderson's other dogs without problem. That dog was also caught on Dupre's body camera, trotting right up to the other officer and obeying commands to follow. The third pet was "secured without incident before the shooting" according to the Cleburne Police Department.

Over the weekend, some 10,000 people liked a Facebook page titled "Justice for Maximus," which planned a protest on Saturday.

The police department, which acknowledges it does not train officers to deal with loose dogs, insists that the "the short video" of the shooting "does not tell the whole story" of the dog's "aggressive" behavior toward Dupre. However, yesterday the department announced that it was conducting an internal investigation. And, "we're also talking to another possible, independent, group about doing a review," says Mayor Scott Cain.

The department doesn't know how long the investigation will take, but in the meantime, Dupre is on paid administrative leave as of Friday.

Shoot a puppy, get a paid vacation.

You get more of what you reward, and less of what you punish.

That video should permanently bar this person from any job in law enforcement. He's either too stupid to recognize a playful puppy, or a psychopath who enjoys shooting puppies. There is no third option.

    1. WTF   11 years ago

You know, it's a wonder more people don't go Eric Frein on these psychopaths.

      1. Free Society   11 years ago

        It's not a wonder. It's a shame.

    2. PRX   11 years ago

he's also a liar, which makes him unusable to any honest police dept.

      1. Restoras   11 years ago

        honest police dept

He couldn't get hired at an honest police department because they don't exist.

        1. Harvey_birdman   11 years ago

There are no honest police departments as evidenced by the fact that dishonest police exist.

      2. Mainer2   11 years ago

In New Hampshire, officers whose credibiity may be in question (that is, known liars) have their names go on something called the Laurie List. Theoretically, that can be used to impugn their testimony in he future.

        So...no punishmet at all.

  2. UnCivilServant   11 years ago

The police department, which acknowledges it does not train officers to deal with loose dogs, insists that the "the short video" of the shooting "does not tell the whole story" of the dog's "aggressive" behavior toward Dupre.

Then release the full video, or we'll have to conclude that it's even more damning.

    1. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

He made kissing sounds to call the dog closer. What could possibly be more damning.

Get this fucking disgraceful excuse for a human being off the streets and put him in a fucking rape-cage.

  3. SugarFree   11 years ago

The police department, which acknowledges it does not train officers to deal with loose dogs, insists that the "the short video" of the shooting "does not tell the whole story" of the dog's "aggressive" behavior toward Dupre.

In other words, the same line of bullshit they always give.

As long as the copsuckers and the gullible cover for them, body cams aren't going to do shit.

    1. Hugh Akston   11 years ago

The lede from a HufflePost article about filming cops:

It's becoming clearer and clearer that smartphones have ushered in a new era of police accountability.

Uh, no. Accountability is when cops are held responsible for the crimes they are recorded committing.

Until that happens bodycams and iPhone videos are just more vivid jerkoff fodder for the troglodytes at PoliceOne.

      1. SugarFree   11 years ago

I think cell phone recording are creating more people who are skeptical of cops, but it's not at a critical mass where accountability will take place.

And the real hope people have about body cams is that it will restrain police actions. This guy shot a playing puppy with the knowledge it was being recorded. And that was because he knew he'd walk away with even a slap on the wrist.

        1. Catatafish   11 years ago

Well, the hope is twofold. One, there is evidence that suggests that people act more civilly when they know they are being observed and recorded. Obviously this psycho didn't fall into that data set. Two, bodycams (ostensibly) will provide evidence by which police (or suspect) misconduct can be used to discipline the offender. But unless discipline actually follows the cameras won't have any impact.

I am curious about one thing. A number of folks here have held to the belief that "good video will be released, bad video will be lost." That may very well end up being the case. Here however it seems to be strangely flipped on its head.

          1. Florida Man   11 years ago

I'm not sure it got flipped. The idiots probably were stupid enough to think "hey, people will see the pit bull and think good shoot." Good thing most people aren't psychopaths.

            1. Episiarch   11 years ago

Exactly, you have to realize that the pigs are mostly sociopaths. The things they think are cool or exonerating may be the exact opposite to non-pig non-sociopaths. This is why if you talk to a cop for a while, eventually they'll start talking about some guy they beat or tasered or lied to to get a confession and you will see their glee from it, and it's repulsive. But they have no idea; they think you're going to think it's as great as they do.

              1. sarcasmic   11 years ago

From the cop-talk that I've overheard, choking people is better than sex.

                1. Mainer2   11 years ago

See Ed Norton's character in The Invention of Lying.

                  "It arouses me....sexually."

              2. Catatafish   11 years ago

So if this is actually the case for the majority of cops, will they continue to be tone-deaf as it pertains to releasing the video that is damning?

          2. SugarFree   11 years ago

I think it's because the cop doing the shooting and the department that released knew there'd be no repercussions.

Or, given the incompetence of the police in just about every matter apart from murder and smugness and ass-covering, they released the part that was supposed to be lost. 🙂

            1. Catatafish   11 years ago

Christ, the irony. If there ARE repercussions from the video, the only incompetent behavior that will be corrected is the releasing of the video that lead to the repercussions.

            2. Harvey_birdman   11 years ago

They're pretty incompetent when it comes to murder too. Unless they have a signed confession or incontrovertible evidence they don't always win. DNA evidence is becoming a joke.

        2. Restoras   11 years ago

he knew he'd walk away with even a slap on the wrist

          Yup.

        3. Hugh Akston   11 years ago

I don't think critical mass is ever going to happen. There will be occasional incidents like Ferguson where municipalities will hang criminal cops out to dry in order to protect their own political careers.

But any kind of measures purported to hold cops accountable at an institutional level will be carefully designed by politicians to lack the tools to investigate cops or the teeth to go after the bad ones.

          1. Drake   11 years ago

I disagree. Critical mass isn't far off. I don't think voters and politicians will fix it - just armed civilians.

        4. Episiarch   11 years ago

I said this when this story was posted previously, but his utter lack of urgency, panic, fear, or any kind of alarm says all you need to know about this sociopath. These are the people that staff police departments. Because they can do shit like this with zero consequences. Of course sociopaths are going to become cops. Is there a better job for them (from their perspective) anywhere?

          1. SugarFree   11 years ago

Yup. I mean, who shoots a playing puppy? Or that psycho from a while back that shot kittens in front of the mother and her little kids?

            1. Florida Man   11 years ago

              Jesus! Somebody shot kittens? Sick.

              1. Catatafish   11 years ago

If I remember correctly he was an animal control officer. There were like six or seven purportedly feral kittens/cats on the property, the owner called to have them removed and this dude just plugged them with the kids standing right in the front yard.

                Because that's safe.

And not indicative of psychopathy AT ALL.

                1. Florida Man   11 years ago

Yeah because you can't adopt out kittens. Make sense to kill them.

                2. Pitana   11 years ago

So why is it that when a bear or mountain lion is loose in a neighborhood they don't shoot it? They'll spend a whole day getting the bear to come down from the tree so they can sedate it and relocate it.

              2. SugarFree   11 years ago

                Barry Accorti, Kitten Killer

              3. Pope Jimbo   11 years ago

yeah. Couldn't they just have masturbated a few times (I heard that a kitten is killed each time someone jerks off)?

  4. Lawman45   11 years ago

This isn't unique, all of the "Thugs in Blue" like to get off by killing animals - they need to feel dominant (that's why they take the low paying job). In my experience growing up in Texas, this is especially true in that state. It he'll do it to a puppy, you can bet he will do it to a person. This officer needs to be hounded out of police work (not simply lose THIS job).

    1. Brandon   11 years ago

Low paying? Where? First year cops here make more than I do, and I've been working my way up with an accounting degree for 8 years.

  5. Anonymous Coward   11 years ago

I think we're all forgetting the most important part of this story: The officer made it home safely after patrolling his sector of the homefront, and that's all that matters.

  6. setTHEline   11 years ago

Wow, nice work officer. I was waiting for an award to popup on the video game screen. "Puppy Killing Spree!". Or maybe a "Puppy Destroyer" Xbox Live badge. He must be so proud.

  7. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Not gonna watch the video. Nope.

    1. Florida Man   11 years ago

I have 2 pits. No way will I watch it.

      1. Florida Man   11 years ago

Actually today is the little one's first birthday. I'm gonna pick up a steak on the way home for him. Happiest dog I've ever seen. He wags his tail every time he drinks water. Just loves being alive.

        1. Brandon   11 years ago

          Just loves being alive.

          Keep him away from cops.

        2. Pope Jimbo   11 years ago

This really sucks for me because I have a 14 year old dog that isn't going to make it through the winter.

I'm trying to come to grips with the fact that my faithful hound has too many physical ailments to make it much longer and then this asshole comes along and shoots a dog for no good reason.

          Fuck, I'm ready to cry.

      2. Catatafish   11 years ago

I'm looking at rescues for January and just found out my complex doesn't allow pits. Of course, that's the breed that is in most need of rescue.

Having seen this, now I'm almost glad I can't get one.

Not that I have any reason to believe these guys wouldn't murder a pekingese without batting an eye...

        1. Gray Ghost   11 years ago

I'm looking at rescues for January and just found out my complex doesn't allow pits. Of course, that's the breed that is in most need of rescue.

Just don't call them "pits." They're "Lab-mixes," if anyone asks. Of course this only works if they don't look like stereotypical pit bulls.

Irony, as most Pits/Staffs/American Bulldogs I've met are about as friendly to people as the stereotypical Lab. Great dogs.

          1. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

            Go with "boxer mix."

      3. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

        You never know, but . . .

If a cop were to shoot my dogs, especially right in front of me, I cannot rule out the possibility of blowing the fucker's head off.

I have a weakness for high-capacity mags, so I might even get his partner, too.

And then we can explore the law of self-defense as it applies to citizens faced with armed agents of the state committing crimes of violence in their presence.

        1. Wasteland Wanderer   11 years ago

And then we can explore the law of self-defense as it applies to citizens faced with armed agents of the state committing crimes of violence in their presence.

You're assuming you'd live through it. One way or another, they'd probably kill you dead. Only way around that I can see is surrendering on live television to a separate agency, and even that might not save you.

          1. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

            Yeah, probably.

I happen to believe that if you don't have anything worth fighting (and dying) for, you don't have anything worth living for. If I die engaged in armed self-defense of me and mine, well, that's far from the worst way to go.

  8. The Late P Brooks   11 years ago

she recently got her hands on Dupre's body camera, and she says it contradicts his official account of what took place.

Why should we believe her? Policemen never lie. They take some kind of an oath, right?

    1. Mainer2   11 years ago

      Higher Standard

    2. Pope Jimbo   11 years ago

I want to know more about how she got the video.

My cynical side is guessing that the officer sent it to his buddies to show off his rad puppy shooting skillz and one of them actually forwarded it on to the victim. The brevity of the clip makes me think someone was sending as an e-mail attachment.

My super cynical side also guesses that she was initially told that the body camera had malfunctioned and that there was no video available.

  9. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

    Dammit. I watched it.

    HOLY CRAP.

Murder of an animal. What's to investigate?

  10. Suthenboy   11 years ago

An acquaintance of mine, ex-friend really, used to drive around and randomly shoot dogs for amusement when he was on night patrol.(thus the ex-friend) Many of his brave co-workers did also.

Many of you here are outraged by cop behavior but you don't know the half of it.

I stopped in a gun shop in Little Rock once. I was quietly looking at the stock while eavesdropping on two retired cops drinking coffee in the corner. They were telling stories about the good ol' days when they would 'shoot any nigger they saw' if they were on night patrol, and how the coroner would cover for them.

When you are dealing with sociopaths keep in mind, nothing is over the line. No behavior, no matter how reprehensible you find it, is any different to them than tying their shoe.

Kevin Dupre shot that dog because it amused him to do so and because it amuses him to punish the dog's owner. He is a sadist and a sociopath.

    1. Pitana   11 years ago

Bingo! The reason they don't shoot bears stuck up in trees is because they have no owners and besides, it will piss off PETA.
They shoot dogs because they have owners and they are mad at the owners because they don't want to have to get up and do what is actually their jobs.

  11. The Late P Brooks   11 years ago

Over the weekend, some 10,000 people liked a Facebook page titled "Justice for Maximus," which planned a protest on Saturday.

Yeah, but how many cars did they set on fire? How many teevees did they steal?

  12. Fluffy   11 years ago

The police department, which acknowledges it does not train officers to deal with loose dogs, insists that the "the short video" of the shooting "does not tell the whole story" of the dog's "aggressive" behavior toward Dupre

Perhaps not, but it proves that the police report he filed was false.

When will he be fired and charged with filing a false report?

    1. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

I want to know when and where he'll be serving his time in prison?

    2. sarcasmic   11 years ago

Every police report of anything I witnessed was a mix of exaggeration, fabrication, and lying by omission.

It's their job to lie. After all, everyone is guilty of something. When the cops lie on reports and on the stand, they get more convictions. So they're doing a public service.

  13. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

Hey, Reason, you know what you might think about doing?

Anytime you run a police abuse story, run a picture of the cop at issue.

I'd like their faces to come up in connection with these stories.

    1. Episiarch   11 years ago

They actually often do show a picture of the cop in such stories.

    2. MegaloMonocle   11 years ago

      1. SugarFree   11 years ago

That's not a cop, that's just a little boy wearing a Halloween costume.

Oh, wait. I think I see the problem.

  14. PRX   11 years ago

so he's going with he feared for his life. from a puppy. and that was a good reason to start shooting in a neighborhood.

the people of Cleburne should make him take the stand every time he writes a traffic citation.

  15. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

"I raised my duty weapon to the ready position ? pointed at the growling dog's head. As soon as I lifted my pistol, the dog began coming up the hill, continuing to growl and display its teeth?I fired three shots at it."

You are a brave man officer Dunphy Dupre. Disgusting fucking pig.

    1. WTF   11 years ago

Yeah, where is the sociopath known as dunphy to defend this shit and BOOYA BODY CAMERAS?

  16. Ron   11 years ago

That type of killing and the police departments actions shows how the entire force is morally bankrupt and all police officers everywhere need to be retained in both the constitution and how to treat both people and animals with respect, even bad people and animals deserve respect as well. "Compassion to All" should be their new catch phrase and they need to act on that not just say it.

  17. Suthenboy   11 years ago

Alright, I read all of the comments and I see now that Dunphy is correct. We are all anti-cop bigots.

    I wonder why that is?

    1. DesigNate   11 years ago

And shockingly (NOT) he's nowhere to be found on this thread.

  18. jjjjj   11 years ago

The cop didn't shoot the puppy. The gun was placed into a position such that it was aimed at the canine and the firearm discharged several rounds of ammunition. The puppy dies.

    1. Pulseguy   11 years ago

Very well stated. I'm surprised the Police Chief didn't point this out.

  19. Pulseguy   11 years ago

Being a police hero is a tough job, then at the end you're stuck with an $85,000 a year pension for life, geared to inflation of course. And, what are the perks? Hardly anything...free donuts, a few speeding tickets ripped up, you get to beat up the odd drunk guy, provided you have lots and lots of backup of course. And, once in a blue moon you get to shoot a puppy. And, now...you shoot the puppy and everyone is angry.

Life is tough being a police hero.

  20. Brandon   11 years ago

I'm guessing dunphy is going to be too busy with a surfing competition to come into this thread.

    1. SugarFree   11 years ago

Why bother? The police chief already gave all the excuses dunphy-bot spews out.

  21. Free Society   11 years ago

The department doesn't know how long the investigation will take, but in the meantime, Dupre is on paid administrative leave as of Friday.

He'll have to murder pets on his own time now. Justice has been served. End. Of. Story.

  22. Paul.   11 years ago

Over the weekend, some 10,000 people liked a Facebook page titled "Justice for Maximus," which planned a protest on Saturday.

    Justice for Kelly Thomas!

  23. BigT   11 years ago

Someone should put together a TV show 'Rotten Cops' to counterbalance the copsucker shows like 'Cops.' Plenty if material and it would expose these criminals.
