Time magazine's cover story on Rand Paul starts like this:
Can he fix what ails the GOP?
The tattooed and pierced longhairs never showed up to see Senator Rand Paul speak with students at the University of South Carolina in Columbia last month. Those in attendance drew instead from the preppy set, with brushed bangs, blue blazers and proper hemlines, some wearing sunglasses on neck straps like jock jewelry. They mostly hailed from college Republican circles, and the room where they gathered, a wood-stained memorial to the state's old power structure, was named for the politician who led the fight to protect school segregation in the 1960s.
You could call them activists, even rebels in their way. But this was not a gathering of losers and outcasts. Paul knew this.
Back in 2011, Reason dubbed Paul "the most interesting man in the Senate" and put him on our cover. Congratulations on the promotion, senator.
Our most recent interview with Paul, from this past summer, when he announced "Republicans could only win in general if they become more live and let live." Transcript here. Click below to watch:

"the room where they gathered, a wood-stained memorial to the state's old power structure, was named for the politician who led the fight to protect school segregation in the 1960s"
I'm glad they won't give me unregistered access to the article, if this is their idea of journalism.
I wonder if a Democratic politician ever spoke in a building named after a bad person. If so, TIME wouldn't mention it.
I remember Time reporting blatantly inaccurate anti-gun bits 15 years ago but there were still some reasonable things. They've fully transitioned to scare-the-moms anti-drug hysteria and "how dare you criticize President Obama for golfing (despite the fact that Bush's trips to his Crawford ranch were endlessly harped upon), only a President and not his employers the people know how much vacation he needs, you big meanies!" white noise. Just another unofficial Democratic Party newsletter, and those aren't exactly in short supply these days.
Paul had a great line recently about not cutting a penny from the social safety net until they had gutted all the corporate welfare first. He's going to make Democrats shit their pants if he runs and gets the nomination.
The liberal media loved John McCain, until he got the nomination, when he became just another bad Republican.
With Rand Paul, as with John McCain and other "moderate" Republicans, every idea is a brand new idea. Appeal to minorities! Never been tried before! Affirmative action for ghetto residents Enterprise zones! Brand new idea! Live and let live!(Because it was just a few years ago that Republicans advocated imprisonment of adulterers, right?)

Yeah, because when I think edgy rebels, the first thing to come to my mind is...Time Magazine.

This will be like the Sports Illustrated jinx, right?
You mean he posed in a skimpy bathing suit?
like Chuck Schumer.
Have a nice lunch, guys!
The real question is is he fixin' to sell out, or is he still foolin' 'em.
The thing is even if he sells out 70% that puts him up as better than roughly 90% of his peers.
Or maybe he really meant it when he said he wasn't a down-the-line libertarian?

Hey, fuck you, buddy. I haven't lost a pair of sunglasses in years.
+1 Croakie
Eh...I guess I'm part Jock so it's cool.
Like The LPB, I haven't lost a pair of shades in a long time.

Dems still have the annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner dont they?
Does that respond to my comment above? If so, excellent point.

I love Rand Paul, but at the end of the day he is a politician I expect nothing from politicians but disappointment and heartbreak.
*Yawn* Wake me when something of note happens.

Wake us all up when you have something intelligent to add.
Congratulations on the promotion, senator.
"Those whom the gods media moguls wish to destroy, they first dub 'interesting'."
Maybe I'll read about it the next time I'm at the doctor or dentist.
I don't always drink beer but when I do I drink Aqua Budda.
