Former Gov. Gary Johnson Goes Into the Marijuana Business

A former politician finds a more honorable profession:

A Nevada-based startup that plans on selling medical and recreational marijuana products named former New Mexico governor and U.S. Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson as its CEO and president, the company announced Tuesday….

Johnson, who owned a construction company that helped build Intel Corp.'s Rio Rancho, New Mexico, plant before entering politics, said the company will make marijuana-based oils aimed at helping children with epilepsy. The two-term governor also said it will make cough drop-like products for recreational use.

"Couple of things hit you when you try the product. One is, wow, why would anybody smoke marijuana given this is an alternative?" Johnson said. "And then secondly, it's just very, very pleasant. I mean, very pleasant."

I wonder how they'll be able to get by with the recreational stuff being based in a state where it's still illegal (plus the federal law of course). The regulatory compliance is going to be a pain in the ass even if they can manage to pull it off.

But it's not smoking, and it doesn't look like smoking, so maybe this will be welcomed by progressives & gov't as a great anti-smoking advance. It may for a time require a prescription as nicotine gum did, but later it'll undergo a rx-to-OTC switch.

During the campaign, on reddit's /r/GaryJohnson forum, I was screaming a blue streak about how, as a 3rd Party candidate, GJ would only have a very limited opportunity to get in front of the media. Since his media exposure was destined to be on "permanent brownout" and he didn't have the cash to remedy that, he would need to choose is battles very carefully and pick the ones that were most media-friendly.

Since medical marijuana routinely polls at 80+% making it by far the most popular "libertarianish" position, I advocated that he should jump in front of that parade--have press conferences with smoking quadripalegics and dare cops to arrest, that sort of thing--and then bask in the media spotlight.

Instead, he gave all sorts of interviews about his plans to murder medicare and medicaid and how he would rescue us from our impending mammoth debt crisis.

The result? Almost zero media coverage, 1% of the vote, and a nation exactly as unlibertarian as it was before the campaign.

If he had the message discipline and media guile displayed by Robert M.F. Sarvis in the VA gubernatorial campaign, we'd be living in Libertopia today.

tl;dr - It's irresponsible not to use marijuana when you're running for POTUS.
