Tonight on The Independents: Benghazi Suspect Nabbed, Hillary Dodges NSA, Rep. Thomas Massie on GOP Leadership Fight, Ex-Drug Czar Attacks 'Libertarians,' and Michelle Obama's Elitist Bad Parenting Justifies the Nanny State

It only took a few hours after the administration announced the commando-capture of suspected Benghazi mastermind Ahmed Abu Khattala for Media Matters for America, citing this New York Times article, to declare that "Captured Alleged Benghazi Ringleader Was Reportedly Responding To The Anti-Islam Video," a headline that was then greeted with cheers of Susan Rice vindicated! from the progressive Twittersphere. But was she? On tonight's episode of of The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT), Daily Beast national security reporter Eli Lake, who has done some of the best reporting there is on the deadly Sept. 11, 2012 attacks, will be on to break down the mechanics and meaning of this most unusual case. Lake will also discuss some of the latest violent chaos and diplomatic machinations in Iraq.

Hillary Clinton is making television interviews, have you heard about that? Tonight the 2016 presidential front-runner blinked hard at Greta van Susteren's tough questioning about surveillance and the 4th Amendment, added new plots to her Benghazi timeline, and said, re: gun rights, that "we cannot let a minority of people…hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people." On to react are Party Panelists Jedediah Bila (Fox News contributor) and David Angelo (comedian), who will also weigh in on Tony Gwynn-inspired calls to more strictly regulate or even ban smokeless tobacco, and also this recent comment from First Lady Michelle Obama:

"Before coming to the White House, I struggled, as a working parent with a traveling, busy husband, to figure out how to feed my kids healthy, and I didn't get it right," she explained […].

"I thought to myself, if a Princeton and Harvard-educated professional woman doesn't know how to adequately feed her kids, then what are other parents going through who don't have access to the information I have?" she recalled.

Her personal struggle helped her launch her mission to address childhood obesity, she explains, especially passing a law requiring schools to provide healthier meals for kids.

The First Lady recommended that schools make decisions for children because their parents struggle to feed their children well.

"It's so important for our schools to make the hard calls for our kids, because parents are struggling enough at home," she said[.]

Is today a day ending in "d-a-y"? Then former drug czar John Walters has uttered something idiotic about keeping drugs illegal, this one with a Reason-tastic twist: "Why Libertarians Are Wrong About Drugs." This shall be discussed. So, too, will the ongoing GOP House leadership fight in the wake of Rep. Eric Cantor's shocking primary defeat, with Liberty Movement superstar Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) giving the blow-by-blow. And we'll also mark the 20th anniversary of a very special day in the world of sports.

..a headline that was then greeted with cheers of Susan Rice vindicated! from the progressive Twittersphere

They haven't figured out yet they might want to let the facts roll in before rolling out the Mission Accomplished banner?

    1. Ken Shultz   11 years ago

The guy's story is that it was all about a video and wasn't masterminded by him, and the government is claiming that's a bunch of bull--that it wasn't about a video and it was all masterminded by him?

If what the progs are chirping about is so--then doesn't that mean this man is innocent?

How can they play both sides of that fence? It seems to me that either the youtube story is a bunch of bull--or the Obama administration is knowingly prosecuting an innocent patsy.

      1. gaijin   11 years ago

^This...except there will be lots of prognitive dissonance.

        1. Bobarian   11 years ago

He was obviously a dupe, conned into attacking by shape-changing lizard tea-baggers who secretly financed the video in order to make 'the One' look bad.

          1. Ken Shultz   11 years ago

At some point, 'the One' is going to have to implode within himself--either Obama is lying about this man being the mastermind, or he lied when he blamed it all on the YouTube video.

Are these people going to oppose Obama on prosecuting this man?

What is the Obama Administration going to do if this man is found not guilty?

            Send him back to Libya?

I think the Obama Administration may have screwed the pooch on this one--like they did on the recent prisoner exchange. What do you mean the country isn't thrilled that we swapped five Taliban operatives for an apparent deserter?

Only this time, it might be: Wait, if he's telling the truth, doesn't that make me a liar for prosecuting him? And if I'm prosecuting him, doesn't that mean I'm admitting that my original story (the terrorist's story now) about the YouTube video was a lie?

          PROGNATIVE DISSONANCE!! VICTORY IN WORDS

      2. Whahappan?   11 years ago

Not to defend the progs, but the story is that he was RESPONDING to the video, i.e. the video inspired him to orchestrate the attack, not that it was a spontaneous, organic reaction to the video. I haven't read the NYT article, but I doubt the video had anything to do with Benghazi, other than being a useful lie to the Obama administration.

That's fine. Here's my parasite lawyer (gestures to ProL) and he has interpreted the Constitution as saying 90% of the government has no right to exist. Are we done now? Can we dismantle the leviathan? You can't argue with me, because you're not a lawyer.

I see yet another prog has raised the specter of automatic weapons.

How common are automatic weapons? Here's what I found:

"Of 2,200 guns recovered by Minneapolis police (1987-1989), not one was fully automatic.

A total of 420 weapons, including 375 guns, were seized during drug warrant executions and arrests by the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad (Will and Grundie counties in the Chicago metropolitan area, 1980-1989). None of the guns was a machine gun.

16 of 2,359 (0.7%) of the guns seized in the Detroit area (1991-1992) in connection with "the investigation of narcotics trafficking operations" were machine guns."

      http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcfullau.html

      1. Tejicano   11 years ago

Very few people - from your average proglodite to many in the NRA have much idea about actual machineguns.

There a thousands of legal machineguns in the US but those are all but never used in crime of any sort.

While it is not too technically difficult to convert a legal semi-auto rifle into a full auto one making it reliable can be tricky. Since there are few practical reasons to do this - either for a criminal or even for any legal use (if the conversion itself was not illegal) - you don't see many people doing it.

        1. Cdr Lytton   11 years ago

Additionally, since they're relatively expensive, auto weapons usually aren't left in a glovebox, in a nightstand or some other easily removed place (except for cops).

A specter is haunting Hillary Clinton, the specter of a GOP intern stalking her in a squirrel suit

It looks like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor isn't the only one bumping into Hillary Clinton on her "Hard Choices" book tour.
A Republican National Committee intern dressed in a furry, orange squirrel costume was spotted at a recent Clinton book signing at George Washington University. And the squirrel's not done yet.

Wearing a tee shirt and handing out matching bumper stickers with the slogan "Another Clinton in the White House is NUTS!", the squirrel getup was intended to detract from media attention Clinton has received since the launch of her new book.

"Just last week Hillary got $50 million of free media to promote her book and define her narrative, the squirrel is a fun way to make sure people learn the non-airbrushed truth about what Hillary really did at State," RNC spokeswoman Kristen Kukowski told ABC News.

"You'll definitely be seeing more from the squirrel," Kukowski said. "The idea is to have a presence at Hillary's events to make sure Americans know that while the Democrats have no choice but to anoint her as their nominee, she's going to have a difficult campaign defending her lack of accomplishments."

For consideration in the Topical Storm segment.

    1. gaijin   11 years ago

You'll definitely be seeing more from the squirrel,"

Better there than in the HnR commenting system I say.

    2. Agammamon   11 years ago

Why would she have to defend her lack of accomplishment? The two previous office-holders didn't.

Are they going to trade him for an IRS GS-10 captured in a Monte Carlo drunk driving trap?

    1. GILMORE   11 years ago

Yeah, he was a 'ringleader' who "*spontaneously* planned an orchestrated assault". On 9/11. Not against the embassy in tripoli! no, that would be too much of a 'political statement'.

No, instead he'll spontaneously attack a quiet location the Ambassador *just happens to be at* on this particular day.

      makes total sense.

    Up yours, Hillary!

    1. Wasteland Wanderer   11 years ago

The dumb thing is that the majority agrees that the 2nd Amendment means what it says. Gun grabbers keep getting confused about that fact, and then are puzzled when their asses are stomped at election time.

The wisdom of the people is nonsense which ignores the Bell Curve. Democracy (to the rare extent it works) is merely dictatorship by a majority - rule by the not too bright. A strong constitution sharply limiting what the majority can do is the only political means of making majority rule bearable.

We're seeing the courts overturn popular laws and direct democracy propositions on gay marriage left and right?

Does she thinks gay marriage rights only exist to the extent that they're popular--or is that somehow different?

    6. DesigNate   11 years ago

"Freedom should be absolutely defended, BUT"?!

      2. WDATPDIM!?   11 years ago

        I'll save you the trouble:

There is ample experience that a drug user harms not only himself, but also many others. The association between drug use and social and economic failure, domestic violence, pernicious parenting and criminal acts while under the influence is grounds for prohibition even if we accept no responsibility for what the drug user does to himself. The drug user's freedom to consume costs his community not only their safety, but also their liberty.

And I'm not just talking about heroin. Over the past decade, as marijuana use has grown, the number of car accident victims testing positive for the drug has tripled, according to a recent study.

        1. Ken Shultz   11 years ago

          SoCons are so damn reactionary.

As bad as the left is, right now, they're right about the socons and the establishment Republicans having virtually nothing interesting or new to offer.

I always remind myself of that Gandhi quote: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

In the last five years, libertarians have gone from mostly being ignored to being laughed at--and I guess we're now at the stage when they're fighting us.

So I guess this is progress.

          1. Raven Nation   11 years ago

            SoCons are so damn reactionary

Generally true. But I think there is some progress in the WOD. Most of it I know from anecdotal experience but don't forget Robertson's statement a year or so back.

        2. Michael S. Langston   11 years ago

The association between drug use and social and economic failure, domestic violence, pernicious parenting and criminal acts while under the influence is grounds for prohibition even if we accept no responsibility for what the drug user does to himself.

As long as the platters weren't ground into dust, the data is recoverable. Even in the case of a severe head crash the likelihood is that the other surfaces are fine, and even the crashed surface can be mostly recovered after cleaning it. Unfortunately, "crash" is a magic word with most people that just makes them accept that the data is gone.

The Independents Attire Review, 17 June 2014

    Don't Ride The White Horse-Edition

    - Kennedy: We like Black. We think either a Metallica (*"Master of Puppets World Tour 1986" is preferred for its very-hip reference to Cliff Burton's demise) or a Ramones T-shirt would be better - because if you're going to go for that? GO ALL THE WAY. With a few steel rings thrown in as well. Why the hell not. Kmele gets to dress like a pimp every now and then - you should be able to break out ye-olde "Headbanger's Ball" outfits.

    - Matt: Hey hey! White shirt! We're so easy to please its ridiculous. See? The Black Suit of Doom more or less dissolves into the background. More ties with the white! We know you like this one. The silver-purple would work great too.

    - Kmele: We're never sure what the guidelines are with the plaid shirts; in this case we have a slamming victory, and I think its the harmony of the blue tones in the shirt and the jacket. I am also a sucker for 'unbuttoned' at the neck, and would even encourage the risky 'two down' (aka the 'French Casual')

    - Eli Lake: His second appearance, and both times he's looked fantastic. He doesn't look like a reporter - he looks like a Gallery Owner. The linen jacket is the business; the rich blue tie just bangs. For a guy short on looks, he really overcompensates with taste.

You know what the most fucked up part of the OJ chase was? It completely cut into Game 5 of the Knicks/Rockets NBA finals, and I was at a bar where the TV had no sound and was screaming like a fucking lunatic, "PUT THE FUCKING GAME BACK ON! WHAT IS THIS SHIT! CUT THE NIGHTLY NEWS OFF AND PUT THE GODDAMN KNICKS BACK ON NOW!!" and the bartender was equally confused, going, 'dude, its the right channel...?!"

It wasn't clear what the story was at all because they didn't have any captions. It was just a car driving down the highway. With no commercials. A barful of people was staring at it going, WHAT.THE.FUCK.IS.THIS.

I just checked. The knicks won. But it was totally frustrating because we couldn't see the game anywhere.

    1. Ted S.   11 years ago

You were old enough to be in a bar 20 years ago? How old are you? I thought you were in between the youngin's and old farts here....

      1. GILMORE   11 years ago

        I'm 40.

And 20 was well old enough to be in a bar in NYC on a knicks playoff/finals game night. i'd stopped getting carded around 18. I had been hanging out in bars since 16 or so; i often acted as a roadie for older musicians who played in bars/clubs around town.

As I explained to people in college, "90% of why people card you in bars is because you look uncomfortable like you don't belong there"; i routinely walked past doormen all the time.

        1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

That was an error in perspective on my part. The numbers add up, but in my mind, they didn't.

I wasn't even in high school, and you were in a bar. For some reason, the 5 years difference seemed like a lot more to me.

          You're a youngin', my apologies.

I get what you're saying about the bars, though. I stopped growing when I was 16. I also had some credible documents to confirm my "adultivity".

Brit shalom (Hebrew for "covenant of peace") is gaining traction as an alternative to brit milah, the traditional circumcision service held on a Jewish boy's eighth day of life."

"John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio are dominating the congressional debate on how to respond to the growing crisis in Iraq, calling for airstrikes on insurgents and blistering the president's policies on the Senate floor and in the media....

"Given the vacuum from the GOP's libertarian wing, the hawks are driving the Iraq discussion....

""World events have proven Sen. McCain, myself, [Sen. Kelly] Ayotte, Rubio, other people who have been hawkish, to have been right," Graham said. "To those who wanted to get to the left of Obama, I'm glad we didn't take your advice."

"McCain said that Paul, Rubio and Cruz all come to him for foreign policy advice and that he's not surprised that Republicans still lean on him for his views. McCain said his advice is still popular among Republicans because lawmakers are looking to be led by "who's highly regarded" ? and that means the two amigos.

""We have had long experience and haven't been wrong," McCain said."

Cross country coach gets 15 days in the pokey for having sex with 17 year old student

An Ohio sports coach and mother-of-four has been sentenced to 15 days' jail for having sex with a 17-year-old boy at her school.
Martina Stanley, 35, admitted having an affair with the teen while she was coaching cross country and track at Elgin High School in Marion County.

The defense argued the boy, who attended the school but wasn't a student of Stanley's, initiated the sex and wasn't harmed.
In a sentencing memorandum, defense attorney Todd Anderson said the teen bragged about the sex to friends.

'The victim joked about the incident when interviewed...and stated he "was fine" and "she is every school boy's dream,"' Anderson said according to 10tv.com.

'This is not to shift blame, but he was very aggressively pursuing Mrs Stanley to escalate the relationship.'

But in court Monday, Stanley apologized to her victim and claimed responsibility for her actions.

'I'd like to say with all of my heart and as humble as I possibly can, that I'm sorry,' she said.

Is it reasonable to expect a 17 year old to keep his mouth shut about something like that?
