Do you love and/or hate to see me sitting in Kennedy's hosting chair? Either way, you'll be motivated to watch tonight's episode of The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, repeats three hours later). Filling in for the big-earrings gal will be Hot Air/Townhall media personality Mary Katharine Ham, who will end the show with a prom-banning story YOU WON'T BELIEVE. Still, the real hooks lie elsewhere.

As befits tradition, Red Meat Wednesday is back with a KABOOM! (Don't ask how red meat explodes, just work with me.) Kicking off the show is the right honorable libertarian gentleman Ron Paul, who will likely talk about how much he misses Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va., though not for long), and also what we've learned from today's Bowe Bergdahl congressional hearings with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Batting second is Yahoo News political reporter Chris Moody, who will hopefully unravel the mystery of who is David Brat, and why exactly did he win. Cleanup is Ron Paul 2.0 Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), who knows a thing or two about running primary elections against the Chamber of Commerce. And rounding out the Cantor-Commentary is FreedomWorks President/CEO Matt Kibbe, who will exclusively reveal whether he had to Google how to pronounce Brat's name correctly last night.

Party Panel tonight is Red Eye co-host Andy Levy and NASCAR-loving Fox News correspondent Dagen McDowell, who will talk about Hillary Clinton's latest Benghazi comments, the NSA's we're-too-big-to-comply-with-court-orders defense, plus what long lines of immigrant children near the border tell us about American politics in 2014.

Follow The Independents on Facebook at facebook.com/IndependentsFBN, follow on Twitter @ independentsFBN, tweet during the show & we'll use the best of 'em. Click on this page for more video of past segments.

      Damn, these are early today.

Hey Reason -- here's an idea. Instead of dumping a bunch of articles at the same time like you just did, too many to really digest at once, why not save some of the articles, the ones which aren't about todays news, for weekends on H&R -- instead of replaying old stories? Think of all the eyes they'd get then instead of being lost in the shuffle today.

Some of us have our best chances to be on this site on the weekends and it's tough to get going with old posts (often with old comments still attached!)

Latest smear against Brat is that he is owned by a big bank (Unlike Cantor, I guess). It's because he holds a chair/runs a program at his school sponsored by BB&T, the libertarian bank:

    Regarding the Oregon shooting...

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....-a-threat/

It seems as though the writer is more interested in the shooter's arsenal than in what he actually did.

"The shooter was carrying an AR-15 rifle, a semiautomatic handgun, a large knife and nine loaded magazines capable of holding hundreds of bullets, Anderson said. In addition, he was wearing a vest used to carry ammunition and other items, as well as a helmet with a camouflage design."

I find the use of terms like, "The shooter" or "Gunman" to be a little tedious. They don't seem to think using the person's name is sufficient.

The editor in me wants to take "nine loaded magazines", and just go, "How many rounds were there"? Its kind of a long sentence just suggesting 'a lot!' Is "270 rounds" too confusing?

The guy *was* loaded for World War Z; however, he killed one guy, winged someone else. Massacre thwarted? maybe. He seems disappointed.

The author of the stories at the WaPo seems to be the go-to-guy for the 'shootings' beat.

i keep coming across sentences that just make me cringe.

"....the shooting was the latest in a seemingly endless succession of violent episodes that regularly grip our schools, shopping malls, movie theaters and other quotidian locations"

    Clearly = avoid Quotidian places.

St. Louis couple shoot two armed men holding their daughter at gunpoint

A husband and wife armed with guns were able to stave off an apparent home invasion Monday night, police said.

One man was killed and a second taken to a hospital in the incident, which happened about 11 p.m. in the 4600 block of Newport Avenue.

Police say a 17-year-old girl who lived at the home was outside retrieving something from her car when she was approached by two masked and armed men who forced her into her house, using her as a shield.

The teen's father, 34, saw the men walking up with his daughter, got his firearm and fired several shots at them, striking both of the men as they entered his home. The teen's mother, 34, also retrieved a gun and fired once at the men but did not hit either, police said.

One of the men, Terrell Johnson, 31, of the 4500 block of Natural Bridge Road, collapsed on the living room floor and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second man, Cortez McClinton, 33, was standing behind Johnson when Johnson was shot. McClinton pointed a gun inside the doorway and also was shot. McClinton then ran away and got his brother to transport him to a hospital, police said.

As was eloquently put by several people here, you own a gun because of the stakes, not the odds.

    1. Notorious G.K.C.   11 years ago

Purely anecdotal. You don't see this article in mainstream news sources, do you?

Angelina Jolie: Wing-cutting scene in 'Maleficent' was a conscious metaphor for rape

During a live broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour show on Tuesday, the UN Special Envoy - who was in town to attend the End Sexual Violence In Conflict Global Summit - opened up about the harrowing scene in which her character has her wings ripped off her body by a childhood friend.

'We were very conscious, the writer [Linda Woolverton] and I, that it was a metaphor for rape,' she explained of the act of violence that takes place as her character is in a drug-induced sleep. 'And
that this would be the thing that would make her lose sight of that.

'At a certain point, the question of the story is what could possibly bring her back?' she continued.

The mom-of-six went on to explain that while it is 'an extreme Disney, fun version of it', at its core, the film is about 'abuse, and how the abused then have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people'.

Okay, so I guess the internet feminists called that one right.

    1. Notorious G.K.C.   11 years ago

Being brain-dead shouldn't treated as a barrier to success in today's society.

Discrimination against the Brain Dead must stop. Also, 'Dead' is a slur, and inappropriate. They prefer the term, "Frontal-Cortex-challenged"

      1. Sevo   11 years ago

The corpse is being kept in an un-disclosed location and by now has to be getting pretty ripe, so it's not only being brain-dead that's gonna cause discrimination.

Yikes, is that still happening? Sad story, but the family shares a big part of the blame, and now are just being insane about the whole thing. She's dead, folks. She's never coming back. Accept it.

"As a leader in Hungary's Jobbik Party, [Csanad] Szegedi whipped up crowds by accusing Jews of "buying up the country" and mocking the "Jewishness" of Hungary's political class. Then came the revelation that upended his career: His maternal grandparents were Jews ? which under Jewish law made him one, too....

"Last year, he sought out a young rabbi in the local Orthodox Jewish community. After a period of intense religious instruction, Szegedi was circumcised last June, a year to the day after he broke with Jobbik. Today he takes Jewish religion classes with his wife, who is also converting to Judaism."

    3. GILMORE   11 years ago

"amnesty" is a catch-all term people use as a barrier to any kind of immigration policy-reform.

It suggests that unless the FIRST PRIORITY of any legal reform is (*something garbled about Deporting Illegals), then nothing else is acceptable!

'Amnesty' is any admission that we have millions of people in the country who've been here for decades. Opposition to 'amnesty' doesn't do anything to change the status quo, and support for so-called 'amnesty' would not change the status quo.

Its a bullshit marketing term tossed around to create the impression that their political opponent is *weak on Mexicans!*

      1. Some call me Tim?   11 years ago

The Independents Attire Review, 11 June 2014

    Hate Crime!-Edition

    - Kennedy: We think 'invisible' is going to be increasingly popular on the Paris runways this coming fall.

    - Matt: We've named this arrangement "The Pleasantville" for the 'out of place' impression it creates ; it is less blatantly 'hipster'/hitman than the White-shirt verion, which always necessitates the 'Royale avec Fromage' comment, and yet easier on the eyes than almost every other use of the Black Suit of Doom. Our feeling is: there is really no reason to wear a black suit AND black tie outside of Funerals, Awards Ceremonies, and Kraftwerk videos.

    - Kmele: We noted last week the color scheme we like best when Kmele breaks out the Khaki blaze. This works. Cookies n' cream con Caramel? Whatever. I will say this everytime it appears = Go out and buy a tan blazer, people. They are the male-fashion Multitool.

    - Mary Kate Something: Steals Kennedy's patented Tinky-Winky Purple for her first appearance on the panel. Inevitable Catfight Will Ensue. In the interim, we're Neutral on MK1* (our freshly minted nickname for her); she currently lacks the screaming-banshee/Coked-Up-Medea tones of Kennedy, or the nightclub-ready-sexy of Jedda-The-Hott.

Got to agree. In fact, there's a strong upside in the current 'arrangement':
Here in CA, there are n-number of very ambitious workers who have learned to live totally outside the boot of the government.
The underground labor market is pretty successful, and judging by some of the worker's trucks, paying very well.

The next couple of years are just going to be a string of court cases saying more and more things need to be covered, eventually getting to absurd conditions.

Whatever happened to Archduke von Pantsfan? These threads never died so early when he was around.

    1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

      Is he not Trouser-Pod?

I just sort of assumed we wouldn't have THREE Trouser related commenters.

      1. Grand Moff Serious Man   11 years ago

After laughing at that louder than I should have, I don't recall seeing that handle on threads recently.

I haven't seen much, but he's been around.

Apparently some assholes are carrying out a DDoS attack in search of payment from Feedly.

Side note: I love all the FREAKING OUT people did about the shuttering of Google Reader, where we now have a large stable of capable replacements.

"IT IS LIKE YOU PEOPLE DON'T EVEN APPRECIATE ME!"

          True story:
          WWII English-Italian phrase book:
          "My wife doesn't understand me!"
          Well, maybe not true.

          1. Dweebston   11 years ago

After some looking around I'm proud to see your rumor substantiated:

Clear efforts were made before the landings in Europe to prepare soldiers for what they would find linguistically. Concerted use was made of the radio and of the magazines and newspapers that the soldiers received for free. Thus, before the D-Day landings, the American Forces Network in Britain ran a series of brief French lessons, from 11.50am ? 12, repeating the same phrases each day in the week over six weeks. The phrases for the coming week were printed beforehand in the American troop magazine Yank The first three weeks' phrases were the expected 'good day', the 'where are?' questions, and the 'I don't understand, speak slowly please'. Weeks four and five were rather more military ? 'where is the nearest aircraft landing area?' - and the final week, headed 'Here Are The Ones You've Been Waiting For', featured 'do you want a cigarette?', 'I am/am not married', and ominously, 'my wife doesn't understand me.'

It's the morning after and less than 300 comments? Did someone sit in for Kennedy last night?

Speaking of Ron Paul, what is up with Rand? He has a call with Mr. Norquist, the day after Cantor goes down because of his support for amnesty. Who advises Rand? I really have to wonder. I'm trying to wait to see what he has to say, but every time it seems he's doing well, he does something very politically stupid.
