Affirmative Action and Diversity Don't Mix
California Democrats are in a state of shock that that Asian Americans – who voted for Obama at rates comparable to those of blacks – handed a resounding defeat to the proposal to reinstate racial preferences in California universities. The state Senate had approved 27-9 a measure to scrap Prop 209 for the November ballot. But Asian Americans, who apparently didn't get the party memo that they should abandon their spots in top universities to further liberal diversity goals, went into high-gear to oppose the measure, causing the Assembly to scuttle it and three state senators to withdraw their support.
But this is only the taste of things to come for affirmative action Democrats, I note in my Washington Examiner column this morning:
Trying to perform a racial balancing act in a country that was neatly divided into two groups — the white discriminators and the black discriminated — was one thing. But pulling it off in a diverse country with diverse groups with diverse histories and diverse interests is quite another. Foisting preferences on a diverse America will pit various groups against each other — as well as against Democrats, as the fight in California amply demonstrates. Diversity and racial preferences are directly antithetical — contrary to liberal orthodoxy.
Diversity and racial preferences don't mix.

Capitalism and free trade create diversity. Stupid economic leftists.
You need economic conservatism if you want to have social liberalism. The fact that gays and bisexuals are far more likely to be business owners than government employees should tell them something.
Is that a thing? I mean, do you have a cite for that?
Dude, it's genetic. Haven't you heard?
Leftists hear nothing but the sound of their own voices rattling around in those ego-swollen heads of theirs.
But those are the bad gays and bisexuals, who are self-hating and pathetic. Didn't you learn that in consciousness raising? In fact, I dare say that they are not really Scotsmen Christians socialists Klein bottles gays and bisexuals at all.
Fucking racist Asians.
Yellow supremacists
You jest, but I have heard exactly that from frustrated leftards here in California.

It must be false consciousness.
It's that pesky lack of white guilt that makes them so terrible.
This is a real problem for the Left. Affirmative Action is really the only concrete benefit the Left actually delivers the black community. At the same time Asians are a rising and important demographic. What do they do, tell the black community to take one of the team one more time or play the race card on Asians like they have everyone else who objects to Affirmative Action?
The other problem is that Progs have made every policy a moral issue of the "enlightened" versus the "racist or sexist". This makes changing their position virtually impossible. How can Progs give up on affirmative action after spending 40 years using Conservative and Libertarian opposition to it as proof of those two groups' racism?
They will just blame it on white Republicans like the gays did after Prop 8 instead of blaming blacks.
That is going to be pretty hard. The Republicans basically don't exist in California. And everyone knows the Asian delegates did this.
And even then, it hurts more than it helps:
The book on it
Worth the read.
Yeah. It doesn't help at all. But most people don't realize that.
There is a Sax Rohmer joke in there somewhere.
Democrats can just lock them up in internment camps. There is precedent for that.
Anti-affirmative action Democrats? Am I reading that correctly? Weird. What's next? Democrats for tax cuts?
"Asian Americans ? who voted for Obama at rates comparable to those of blacks"
Has anyone come up with a decent explanation for that?
Because to many non-white Americans, the Democrats come across as the slightly less shitty party?
Even though a substantial number of Asians are business owners, I'm guessing the Democrats not having that racist, xenophobic aura to them explains why.
Retarded Republican posturing on immigration doesn't just hurt them with Latinos.
Romney ran on offering foreign students a green card stapled to the back of every STEM diploma, didn't he?
Pretty much. And Asians hate Hispanics and blacks too.
I love how casually John makes these sort of statements about minority groups, when he would throw a shit fit at someone saying the same thing about white people.
Yes, but perception is everything.
Like the perception the #1 item on the GOP agenda was outlawing birth control.
But he just wants immigrants so he can underpay them and make racist jokes about them so it doesn't matter what he says.
-The Left
I think that new immigrants do everything they can to fit into the mainstream culture as they see it. And the mainstream culture in this country, as defined by media and entertainment, is liberal Obama supporting Democrat.
Think about it. If you just fell off the boat from India or the Philippines and wanted to fit in and succeed, what would you do, become a mainstream Obama voting soft liberal or some gun owning right winger?
They voted for Obama at rates slightly higher than Jews and Hispanics. 73%
I think Blacks voted for O at 95%
it's even harder for them to see the truth?
Same reason Germans joined the Nazi Party or Russians joined the Communist Party--there's only one party in California.
I love it when an unprincipled idelology starts eating itself from within (which is inevitable).
I think Affirmative action has seen it's day.
I mean we do have a 1/2 breed mongrel in the White House.
As for diversity in Universities, I guess we can have private universities do that. The question is whether public colleges can have a diversity policy.
Let's bite the bullet in California, get rid of all admission policies and replace it with SAT scores and a college entrance exam. You guys ok with that? That's really the fairest way to go.
This way only Asians will be in college.
I seem to remember 1920's and 30's Ivy League universities defining their legacy admissions and quotas limiting the number of Jews in the same way.
But whatevs.
*defending
Aye.
Yup.
And progressives will still lie about the issue. Don't believe me? In the science magnet high school in Fairfax County, VA, whites are underrepresented and a minority (guess who is overrepresented and the majority), but progtards still call the school overwhelmingly white.
Because Asians are a minority when they're a minority and white when they're not. Sheesh!
We can go with the old South African Apartheid nomenclature:
Asians are Honorary White.
Well the women are at any rate.
TIWTNLW
As long as everyone is disarmed, I don't really care what the policy is.
Oh that's the other thread.
I bet Asians in California will seriously consider casting a protest vote against these Democrats...in the Democratic primary.
(does Calif still have party primaries?)
Whatever happened to the likes of Sen. Hayakawa?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._I._Hayakawa
Primaries? No. California has Democratic Party elections.
First generation Asian Americans are generally conservative, but they also tend to be apolitical and tend to vote how their kids tell them to vote. Second generation Asian Americans tend to buy into the propoganada that, because they are minorities, they necessarily are oppressed and therefore must stand in solidarity with other minorities.
It's not propaganda that they are not white. And as far as minorities are concerned, Asians are definitely on the top of the food chain as far as whites are concerned. But, they're still not White to the standard of your typical White American in Texas Arizona Alabama Florida and in other parts of the USA.
Here in NYC, there seems to be two. The ones that stick to themselves and the others that blend into the melting pot.
It is obvious that Asians are not white, but they also are not black or hispanic either. The propaganda is that (i) there are only two sides (i.e., white and minorities) to these issues and (ii) Asians are, by virtue of not being white, better off picking the minority side over the white side.
I'm going to tell u the truth Zen, many Asians look as blacks/latinos as spicks/niggers just like some white people do in America (Not All white people). They don't really want to be grouped or associated with us.
Perhaps in "White Only" policies that are rare or implied, they are left out.
I'm really NOT surprised that Asians overwhelmingly democrat. They are, in general, better educated and smarter than whites/blacks/latinos in general.
That said, I find Libertarians far more intelligent and educated than Classic or Neo Conservatives. I love this blog and I love hearing the people here (even though all they do is throw tomatoes at me).
We don't need another racial spoils system.
The Democratic Party has reached Peak White Guilt and are finding, to their horror, that it isn't practiced by Asians in California. As I told my Black friend in Texas who was pro-illegal immigration, "You're going to discover that Latinos don't have white guilt and they are not going to practice it when they are in power."
He told he recently that Houston is so "diverse" that he no longer feels comfortable in it.
Why would white people have guilt over something that their ancestors did?
In fact, many of the whites italian/irish/polish/german/etc. came after slavery was abolished or had nothing to do with it.
