In his weekly radio address, President Obama more or less took credit for America's dramatic shift to becoming the world's largest energy producer, even as American carbon emissions dropped. But the headline provided by Investor's Business Dailywas more accurate: "Obama: Domestic oil production surges despite my best efforts."
In fact, the federal government has limited drilling on federal land, and taken other steps to make oil production in America harder. But as Wall Street Journal reporter Gregory Zuckerman reports in his new book, The Frackers: The Outrageous Inside Story of the New Billionaire Wildcatters, the changes -- horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking" -- were brought about by a bunch of outsiders working on their own, without help from either the feds or from Big Oil….
"[W]ildcatters" were able to do something that the federal government, despite programs ranging from synfuels to Solyndra, wasn't: They produced cheap energy and a big step toward energy independence.
Thanks to the fracking revolution, the air is cleaner, gas is cheaper, and petro-state dictatorships have less geopolitical influence. But this happened not as a result of some big-government program, but as the result of individuals staking their lives and fortunes on a risky venture, one that, as Zuckerman notes, made some rich but left others near bankruptcy.

Just a few years ago, fracking was being hailed by environmentalists as a clean, safe way to extract natural gas from the earth.
It didn't take long for hysteria to take hold, based on a couple of minor incidents.
Environmentalists prove, once again, that they are not pro-environment, but anti-human. They simply do not like our presence on the planet. The fact that they hate themselves is should be the subject of some doctoral dissertation in projection psychology.
Do these poor souls jerk off to simian porn?
This anti-human sentiment shines through whenever discussion comes up about colonizing other planets.
Arguments are made against the colonization of other planets based on the idea that humans supposedly destroy everything they touch, and that we shouldn't ruin other planets.
All of this despite the fact that there is more planets than I could give a number to describe and the fact that this planet will be roasted in the next 4 billion years or so.
I was in diapers during the first moon landing. But I remember reading something about how a bunch of leftists complained about our leaving "space junk" in the cosmos during the Apollo missions.
Fucking unbelievable.
Well, space junk actually is a problem in that the more useless crap you have stuck in orbit up there, the more difficult it is to launch spacecraft in such a way that they don't get hit by anything on the way up. Yeah, if their line of thinking is that it is wrong for humans to desecrate Gaia's perfect virginity or whatever then they're crazy, but space junk should also be a concern for anyone who wants to see more cool shit built by humans in space.
I don't usually like movies like that, but the effects were pretty amazing.
The 3-D was awesome. It wasn't so much cheap shots of stuff flying out at you as much as it gave you a sense the space between the characters, the shuttle, etc.
I remember watching it live. It was a weekend afternoon. ABC's Wide World of Sports. Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. The Wonderful World of Disney. And oh yeah, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."
I also remember a woman who complained we were "polluting the lunar environment."
"I also remember a woman who complained we were "polluting the lunar environment.""
This sort of stuff is amazing!
Pollution is a HUMAN concept; it doesn't exist unless a human declars something to be a "pollutant". Other than that, it's just one more collection of atoms sitting there.
So she has declared herself the guardian of the lunar environment and arrogates the privilege of declaring what constitutes pollution?
Could be chutzpa, but I'm guessing it's stupidity.
I can't remember the first landing, I was four, but I distinctly remember my dad waking me up in the middle of the night and telling me I should say a prayer for the crew of Apollo 13.
""[W]ildcatters" were able to do something that the federal government, despite programs ranging from synfuels to Solyndra, wasn't: They produced cheap energy and a big step toward energy independence."
This is why the moochers and utopians and OWS types hate liberty and capitalism. It is a system which allows smart capable people to win EVERY. TIME., to do things that they, the moochers and control freaks cannot. Others success is nothing but a reminder of their own incompetence.
They are like midgets that cannot grow taller and so try to pull everyone else down.
I can remember back in '09, when the "Stimulus" was getting started, stocks in a lot of the Bakken drillers went through the floor. Belief was that Obama would shut down the ND companies 'cuz, after all, future was greentech.
A lot of people did pretty well for themselves if they just held on to Kodiak or Triangle or Oasis, even if the gubmint's propping up much of the market.
Interestingly, Texas' Eagle Ford has doubled production since '07 thanks to fracking and other techniques to boost old wells. Again, private land. But we knew that.
Yeah, I got you (and I actually meant to say TX's Permian Basin has doubled production since '07... Eagle Ford, further south, went from under 1k barrels of oil per day in '09 to over 600k bpd in the first 8 months of this year.)
Sadly, I never really found a (smallish) company in Eagle Ford to invest in that was as attractive as the Bakken drillers, but I'm enjoying this immensely, and because of certain logistical challenges faced up in North Dakota, figure both Eagle Ford and Permian Basin are just getting warmed up, while the Bakken may slow a bit (trouble is lack of pipelines).
"In his weekly radio address, President Obama more or less took credit for America's dramatic shift to becoming the world's largest energy producer, even as American carbon emissions dropped."
I know the Peanut Gallery is under informed, but Obama has taken steps to aid energy production.
Namely, tax credits and breaks that allow for capital expenditures like accelerated depreciation and capital loss extensions past the previous four year maximum.
Also, huge tracts in the Gulf of Mexico have been leased including 38 million acres in one auction this past year. IBD are known liars, by the way.
"Also, huge tracts in the Gulf of Mexico have been leased including 38 million acres in one auction this past year."
A lot of people say crediting that lease to the Obama Administration is a bunch of horseshit.
"virtually every single acre of the 38.6 million offered has been available before. Some of them have been available every year for 30 years and have never received a bid."
If that's true, sounds like Obama hasn't done anything new on that 38 million acres. Sounds like someone finally bid on what's always been available for auction--maybe available since the Reagan Administration--and the Obama people are touting it like they had something to do with it.
Hold on, the claim was that Obama was somehow prohibiting federal energy production.
Now you are saying he is not.
Furthermore:
The data in the report, which go back to 2003, show that there was indeed a large decline in oil production on federal lands and waters in 2011. But that observation belies the fact that federal lands and waters were exceptionally productive during 2010, outstripping any year's productivity during the Bush administration. Indeed, the average productivity on federal land and waters during the four Bush years, 2003-2008, was 634 million barrels per year. During the three Obama years, 2009-2011, it was 676 million barrels. During the Bush years, federal lands produced roughly 33 percent of the national output on average. During the Obama years, they produced roughly 34 percent. [Columbia Journalism Review, 3/22/12]
I'm responding to your claim that Obama made 38 million acres available in one auction last year.
That doesn't appear to be the case. Someone finally bid on 38 million acres that has seems to have been available for a long time--maybe decades.
Obama doesn't seem to have had anything to do with it, so why cite it as evidence that the Obama Administration is out there making more drilling leases available?
Yes, but just because someone finally bid on that land doesn't mean that land wasn't available before.
Apparently no one wanted it before.
That link suggests that land may have been available for drilling for the past 30 years--in which case Obama didn't do anything to make that land available for drilling. It's been available since the Reagan Administration.
Some oil company finally comes along and bids on land that's been sitting there to be bid on for the past 30 years--and that's somehow evidence of Obama making land available for drilling?

You're citing production statistics, but isn't that about world demand for oil, etc.?
What does having Bush or Obama in office have to do with that?
Is there something showing that Obama has done more to make land available for drilling--that Bush didn't do? Or are you just going by production numbers during each administration?
"Is there something showing that Obama has done more to make land available for drilling--that Bush didn't do? Or are you just going by production numbers during each administration?"
This has been covered and cited every time shreek licks O cock again.
Obo cut drilling permits by a ton, and then allowed some few.
Natch, shreek jumps up and down and says: 'See what my hero did!'
Yes, we do, shreek.
Let's not forget Obummer's Energy Dept trying to use the BP Oil spill as an excuse to shut down ALL drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
They inserted a recomendation advocating such into a report by a panel of independent experts after said experts had already signed off on it and without their knowledge.
When said experts found out they made it clear that they had recommended no such thing and the adminisration tried to pass off their fraudulent behavior as a "misunderstanding".
Actually, as a regular participant in Federal lease sales, I can say without a doubt that you are the one that is most under-informed. I have had several lease sales reach the day of auction and be cancelled with clear reason offered other than something about insufficient environmental studies - and this was always after there was political pressure from environmentalists in those areas. I have participated in lease sales where the Administration cancelled the lease sale after awarding the leases and refused to issue the leases even after accepting the checks for the bonus payment and first years lease fee. The time for acreage to come up for bid from the time it is nominated has gone from one year to over two years and in some cases over four years. When you have to wait (and continue to monitor) your acreage nominations for over two years there is a good chance you will just give up. The administration is obviously attempting to drag its feet and slow down leasing. Obama has done quite a bit to slow down and stop oil and gas during his administration. Those tax credits you speak of existed prior to Obama and apply to many other industries besides oil and gas.
Fracked fuel has reduced U.S. CO2 emissions to pre-1990 levels, reduced our dependence on foreign oil, helped green the earth, been shown repeatedly and independently to be safe, and produced much-needed tax money for the government coffers. Why else not like it?
But the green weenies are against it because capitalists did it.
And unlike Solyndra, it might MAKE MONEY!

Honestly, I think you may be on to something.

Unfortunately.
Bad?
I liked it!
I don't usually like movies like that, but the effects were pretty amazing.

I'm not talking about junk in orbit. I'm talking about shit that flies off into oblivion -- 13.7 billion years of time/space nothingness.

More like 1 billion if you care about life. 4-5 billion if you care about the rock itself.
Environmentalists supports all forms of energy plan, except those that works.
FTFY
They could reduce CO2 if they'd just stop exhaling it.

Shrike freaks the fuck out in 3...2...1...
Any positive economic news is despite Obama, not because of him. Imagine this country without the obstacle of D.C.
Anarchy of course. Just a bigger Somalia.
We got nicer ROADZ!

Supposed to be:

And Al Gore created the internet.
Well, Obo hasn't managed to totally screw it up. Yet.
Nick, (I feel that) you should comb or brush your hair and lob off some of your antiquated (my opinion) sideburns.
You just wait. We're going to deplete the whole world's resources in just a few years. And then what?

Yes, but just because someone finally bid on that land doesn't mean that land wasn't available before.

Fuck off Merican.
This is so stupid it's not even wrong.
Why does he bother changing his name? His bullshit shines right through regardless.
I'm assuming Merican already went down teh memory hole as you are telling LFoD to fuck off?
I think his names get banned when he does. He therefore has to change his name.

He showed up, said something about Jews, and was promptly banned. That's why the posts above you no longer seem to make sense.
Ah, thank you.
Boy! Somebody's on top of things this evening!
So the squirrels have become useful.
I wonder if we could get a couple of them released upon the ObamaCarousel website. Or perhaps I should say *have* released them?
Go Kochtopus!!!
