Does President Obama Know What In Hell the NSA Is Up To?

At a gathering of political leaders of the world's larger economies focused on giving them all an opportunity to glare and growl at each other about appropriate responses or non-responses to Syria's civil war, President Obama was asked a question a bit…off-topic. Specifically, Agence France Presse's Tangi Quéméner asked him about a relatively minor side issue in the slow drip of revelations about National Security Agency surveillance of as much of the planet's conversations as possible: allegations that the NSA spied on the presidents of Brazil and Mexico. Obama's answer was…interesting.
The exchange during a press conference at the G20 conference in St. Petersburg, Russia went like this:
I will take the last question. Tangi -- AFP.
Q: Thank you, Mr. President. Yesterday night you had two unscheduled bilateral meetings with your Brazilian and Mexican counterparts after they voiced very strong concerns about being allegedly targeted by the NSA. What was your message to them? And do the revelations -- the constant stream of revelations over this summer make it harder for you to build confidence with your partners in international forums such as this one?
…
Now, just more specifically, then, on Brazil and Mexico. I said that I would look into the allegations. I mean, part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what's going on with respect to these particular allegations -- I don't subscribe to all these newspapers, although I think the NSA does -- now at least. (Laughter.)
And then, what I assured President Rousseff and President Peña Nieto is, is that they should take -- that I take these allegations very seriously. I understand their concerns; I understand the concerns of the Mexican and Brazilian people, and that we will work with their teams to resolve what is a source of tension.
"Part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what's going on"? Really? So this surveillance stuff is all news to the second-term president of the United States?
So, what do you say? Is President Obama finding out about the NSA's interesting activities along with the rest of us? Is he bullshitting the press corps and the public? A bit of both?

Nope, I don't see Obama on my "report to" list.
When did you change sides Corey?
I'm not familiar with that reference.
You used to be so cool, so rebellious toward authority:
Wake up wake up darling Corey
What makes you sleep so sound
The revenue officers are coming
They're gonna tear your still-house down.
Well the first time I seen darling Corey
She was sitting by the banks of the sea
Had a forty-four around her body
And a five-string on her knee.
President Know-Nothing's greatest virtue is that he knows nothing about what his subordinates are up to.
NSA spying on people? Heard about it on the news.
Benghazi? He don't know shit and besides, what difference, at this point, does it make?
DEA spying on people? Fucking druggies would have it coming even if President Know-Nothing actually knew something about it.
IRS strongarming the opposition? President Know-Nothing is as shocked and appalled as you are. But it will continue because all it needs is a little fine-tuning.
Drones are killing civilians? He must have accidentally agreed to execute someone while eating pizza on Terror Tuesday.
Agitate, dissimulate, prevaricate, and obfuscate. These are our President's core competencies.
He has made it clear, and I agree, that this motherfucker is not MY president.
"President Know-Nothing's greatest virtue is that he knows nothing about what his subordinates are up to."
He's got Reagan beat by a mile!
Iran/Contra was 1000x worse than any Obama fake scandal.
Not that I agree or disagree, but make your case.
Very arguable.
Iran/Contra was about selling arms to Iran, then using the money to finance the contras.
AFAIK, no US ambassadors got killed in the process.
Bengazi is about us arming the Lybian rebels, letting the weapons fall into the hands of terrorists, allowing them to kill a US ambassador, and then covering the whole covert-weapons fuckup up.
I'm honestly not sure which is worse.
They both involve illegal shipments of weapons to people we'd rather not associate with and then coverups to make sure nobody finds out about it.
Frankly, (and maybe because it is fresher in the memory), the NSA thing bothers me more than either.
The US has a long history of providing military machinery to warring groups. Not sure what makes either one all that unique. The principle is the same. We shouldn't be upsetting the balance of power in other nations.
The NSA and the programs closely associated with the Patriot Act are more unique in our history. They are the broader and more liberty destroying.
I don't see them as particularly Obama scandals but broader issues of the size of our government.
I maintain that Obama (aside from optics) is not that unique. Just an Opportunarian, masquerading as a true believer.
At least you got your name right.
Well Ken, if you prefer this Marxist traitor to Reagan, then you are a complete idiot. How's that free phone working for you?
Assuming Obama's not lying through his teeth, why does no one ever point out the vapidity of having heads of state meet in order to exchange meaningless assurances? Spying on Brazil and Mexico is a big deal, but their presidents' complaints should have been items on Obama's morning agenda, not an excuse for a fucking tea party.
This world is run by a bunch of famous dimwits who like to shake other famous dimwits' hands.
In a dominant manner!
No. Obama prefers to bow.
Nailed it.
Two Lions: Fucking Each Other
Hi, thanks for watching. The other lions are cubs (they seem a little? confused by the mating ritual)
That's because, in the Lion King, the king did not advocate sex education for Kindergartners, like the king of us humans, does.
Little known fact: A young Barry Soetoro did some musical theater, which he stated as giving him "inspiration to enter a field that also required much public speaking".
RACIST!!!!(glances up and reads user name)......never mind.
HALF-RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, but you see, HM is only half black, but he's mostly cracker, because unlike Obama, he didn't go to Harvard and work as a community organizer, by which merit makes Obama ALL black and above criticism.
So, you see, HM IS a racist, and Obama is both a super hero and a victim who cannot be judged for his own actions.
If you go to the right school and practice law illegally, you can also be a White Indian.
Glad I could make that clear.
I'm a Justice of the Peace, does that count?
I'm a Justice of the Peace, does that count?
Pretty lame super hero name HM. Fist of Justice....Peace Crucible....Fist of Etiquette....nahh forget that last one...worst ever.
You want a Peace of this Justice? Well, do you punk!!?
Aren't you in Asia? Are you an Asian JP?
Were you the judge who, when the restaurant owner asked the guy to pay for smelling his cooking, ordered the guy to jingle some coins so the restauranteur could be paid for the smell of food by hearing the sound of money?
NO, racist! Well... maybe we could make you a White Indian?...
At one time I wanted to be a White Hispanic, but that Zimmerman dude ruined it for me.
Fuck you, man! We're still cool. As for GZ, Cheech Marin is whiter than that guy.
Yeah that's just what Mr. Lion needs when he's trying to get a little...."the Man in the Yellow Hat" following him around in his jeep.
For whatever reason, this made me laugh uncontrollably. Maybe it's the 16 ounces of rum.
That is about 8 oz more than me...but I still laughed.
And Mr. Lion was like, "OK, baby, ciao!"
It's good to be the King of Beasts!
"I mean, part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what's going on with respect to these particular allegations -- I don't subscribe to all these newspapers, although I think the NSA does -- now at least. (Laughter.)"
Did George W. Bush ever say anything in public that sounded this stupid? This is like a line from a funny movie. Whenever Obama lets his guard down and says what he really thinks, he always gets himself in trouble...
"You didn't build that."
"Red line!"
He's basically saying he has no idea what's going on--he just works there. If Dr. Strangelove had been about wiretapping, this is what that idiotic president would have said in the war room.
Is Cavanaugh off writing another screenplay somewhere? Somebody tell him we need a Dr. Strangelove for the 21st century, and Obama's practically writing the punch lines for him!
"I mean, part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what's going on with respect to these particular allegations -- I don't subscribe to all these newspapers, although I think the NSA does -- now at least. (Laughter.)"
This is infuriating, actually. It marginalizes the real concerns people have about NSA overreach by joking about it. Are my concerns a joke to you, Barack?
The answer is "yes". He does think your concerns are a joke.
He thinks his responsibilities as president are a joke, too, apparently--he isn't taking them seriously at all.
Yes. The concerns of anyone not named Barack Obama are of no concern to Barack Obama.
I prefer this response. Far preferable to holding a press conference to try to tell the American public the long-form political equivalent of "baby don't worry, anal's not going to hurt at all and it's just gonna be the tip".
It also lets me know exactly what intellectual level he's engaging us on. You don't joke about your ignorance of a particular policy that you support only to then presume to be having a mature discussion with the American people.
Well, he joked about using predator drones to assassinate teenagers. Joking about something that we all know happens (that is, spying on other countries, not citizens) is pretty tame in comparison.
Yes, I'm not going to go Full Metal Feminist and pretend that his joke "offends" me.
His policies offend me -- and should upset the moral sentiments of any American. If he restricted himself to making awkward jokes about politically sensitive topics and proceeded to deal with those topics in a constructive way, there wouldn't be anything to complain about. Unfortunately, the BO administration has held life and liberty to be far cheaper to it than pretty much anything else in its agenda.
His policies offend me -- and should upset the moral sentiments of any American
He seems to be working very hard towards that goal. And people say he just plays golf all of the time...
Well, there was also him joking about auditing his political enemies. Seems to be a pattern to what King O thinks is funny.
Are my concerns a joke to you, Barack?
He feels your pain so much that he has to laugh to avoid crying.
Seriously, this *is* infuriating. Too bad "(Laughter.)" isn't "(Irate chants for resignation.)"
Of course they are a joke to him. Do you really think this moron gives a crap about anyone but himself?
You really have to love how Barry constantly frames himself as completely incompetent to dodge responsibility.
"Barry constantly frames himself as completely incompetent to dodge responsibility."
He does!
His response is often: "Don't blame me! I have no idea what's going on!"
This is the response you would expect from someone who's never had a real job.
If I had a manager tell me that he only found out about this stuff when he was reading the newspaper? I'd fire his ass so quick...
That's your job, Buddy Roe! You're responsible for what the NSA does, and if you don't know what they're doing already--without your express authorization? You better find out quick, 'cause in the real world?
You're responsible for what the people you manage do. Doesn't seem fair--I know! But guess what? That's what a manager is: someone who's responsible for what other people do.
And managers that only correct problems after they happen--are shitty managers. This massive embarrassment to Obama as a manager happened under your watch--he went in to talk to Mexico and Brazil about this very problem, specifically, and he didn't even bother to find out from his own people at the NSA what happened beforehand?
What kind of incompetent boob would hold a meeting like that? He doesn't know what the problem is; if there's a problem; whether it's ongoing; he knows nada; and then he goes to the press after the meeting and broadcasts his own ignorance like it's something to be proud of?!
It's amazing that someone this incompetent got to be president. There isn't a single small-cap CEO anywhere in the Russell 2000 that's as stupid as Barack Obama on these things. The man's bragging about being an ignoramus!
Excuse me, that deserves more exclamation marks...
Our president is bragging to the media about being an ignoramus!!!!!!!!!!
The incentive structure is a bit different for the president of the US than for a small company's CEO. BO has already accomplished the only thing that a president can accomplish -- being reelected.
That's not his intention. He really is completely incompetent.
I meant in regards to his ignorance towards all these policies. Sure, he's incompetent, but he's clearly aware of them. I just find it funny that his tactic is to act like he has zero knowledge of them, like being the President and being completely unaware of the inner workings of government is a good thing.
Last I heard, he's a loan officer for a local bank in San Diego, but don't quote me on that. Might be a different TC.
Government is just a name for all the things we do together! So what have we been doing lately? Damned if I know, I just know what I read in the paper.
Probably yes, at least to some extent, but he approves. Obama does not believe in civil liberties or any form of democracy or republic, and he imagines himself as king.
OT, the media are completely losing their mind:
CBS attacks pope, says he likes Putin more than Obama
The MSM have now stooped to attacking the Pope. because guess what, he doesn't support Obamas war. I'm shocked. A harmless little old guy in a funny suit, with no real power, that millions worldwide look up to.
They are beyond desperate.
Hell, insulting the Pope is fine with me. Insulting the Pope for not bowing to the God King is disgusting, though.
exactly
What kind of Irishman are you?
"CBS attacks pope, says he likes Putin more than Obama"
Life imitates the Onion again.
CBS is jealous because they want Obama to be more like Putin and put the boots to irresponsible internet bloggers who won't report things the way CBS does.
If loving Obama is wrong, they don't want to be right.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWAUCVbnDUg
Hey, Obama is sort of like the Pope of Tonyism.
Speaking of which...
...no Tony and no shitstopper...
...nice evening.
Now you jinxed it.
Seems like they haven't been around as much lately.
It's possible that they're (even subconsciously) less enthusiastic about defending a warmongering president.
That was my thought.
Hell I like Putin more than Obama and I hate (ex) commies.
Oh please. When has Obama ever given a non-bullshit answer to a question from the press? They've only just figured this out?
I just watched Dilma talking about our fearless leader. Basically, she said she isn't buying a word he says, about pretty much anything. Not about the spying on Brazil, or about his Syrian war.
Now, Dilma is pretty much about as full of shit as most other politicians, but our POTUS has lost all credibility with nearly the entire world.
Call this war thing to a vote, Boehner, you big orange fucking pussy.
Now, Dilma is pretty much about as full of shit as most other politicians, but our POTUS has lost all credibility with nearly the entire world.
Isn't it magnificent!? Sugar Coated Barry O: one man destroyer of both domestic and foreign relations.
When the leader of Brazil is openly talking shit about the US president, it's because he's a fucking joke. No one takes him seriously.
Lobbing a few cruise missiles into Syria will fix that. Lindsey Graham told me so.
And if you doubt Lindsey Graham's veracity, well...
The simple fact is that the U.S. government is so gigantic than nobody knows everything it's doing ... not even the President, and certainly not Congress.
The basic problem is that Congress has delegated authorities to the executive branch that are nowhere authorized in the Constitution. The majority of "laws" aren't passed by Congress, they are simply declared by bureaucrats.

This is the basis of the problem, I agree.
Oh!Buma is either a fool or an oathbreaker. Either he doesn't know, in which case he's a fool, or does, in which case he is abrogating his oath to protect uphold and defend the Constitution. Take your pick. If it weren't that Uncle Joe is number one in line after him, I'd say impeach him now.
If it weren't that Uncle Joe is number one in line after him, I'd say impeach him now.
You would deny America the humor that a Biden administration would provide daily?
Monster!
I always thought of the VP as life insurance for the POTUS, but the POTUS has gone so far into the absurd that having a ridiculous fool for VP seems redundant.
I say fuck it, lets have a president Biden.
Grendel I am!
Impeach Biden first, then filibuster any attempt to install a new VP before you finish impeaching BO.
Then we'd have President Boehner....oh shit. This is going to be more complicated than I thought.
His oath includes: "to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
That requires more than keeping himself in ignorance and joking to the press about how he only knows what he reads in the papers. It means supervising his people so they know better than to violate the constitution.
If his people don't say, "we better not violate the Constitution, the President would have us fired!" he's not doing his job.
The first phrase is his out: he has no ability, so "to the best of my ability" means "not".
Washington Post seriously blames bad economic numbers on the shutdown of porn filming.
Okay. The motion picture industry only has about 400,000 jobs, which makes it a very minor part of the economy. The porn industry is a very small fraction of that. There is no way on Earth that the number of jobs lost from the porn shutdown was enough to swing the jobs report in any meaningful way.
Although, if true, you could say that these job losses were...bushes' fault.
Maybe the prez can appoint all of them to cabinet positions. It couldn't get much worse.
Speaking of that, Raylene is still hot.
Whack Magazine? LOL.
If people can't get their business up in the movies, how can one expect ordinary Americans to get their business up?
Of course, it could be a response the recent story about the pornstar diagnosed with AIDS.
Although, if true, you could say that these job losses were...bushes' fault.
Last time I checked everyone was pretty clean shaven down there......
That's a huge drop..... But what's behind it?
They giggled when they wrote this.
"I mean, part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what's going on with respect to these particular allegations "
Ya know - I could accept this excuse the *first* time. But long before this point *I* would have lit a fire under someone's arse to ensure that I knew EXACTLY what the NSA was doing and make it very clear what the limits of their authority is.
Of course, I was never the president of the Harvard law review, never a senator, and certainly never attained the highly sought after position of community organizer.
I'm just some yokel who doesn't have the education and experience needed to 'run a country'.
Sometimes, I don't understand libertarians.
It's as if they think the President should have a limited sphere of authority and act assertively within that sphere.
Far better to give the President a broad grant of power, treat him like Pontifex Maximus, and refuse to hold him accountable or expect him to use his power like a proper administrator.
*I* would have lit a fire under someone's arse to ensure that I knew EXACTLY what the NSA was doing and make it very clear what the limits of their authority is
And this is why you cannot be king.
I said that I would look into the allegations.
Lawyer-ese for "Fuck You, That's Why"
There is a special level of slimyness required to say to someone's face, "spying on you? gee, maybe we are, maybe we aren't... what makes you think im going to ever be straight with you about anything? I do what i want because *i can*, bitch..."
Obame furow his brow with confusien. "Wait a secend, I dont realy know anything about the U.S. constetutien and even if I did, I prob wouldent adheare to it... but if Im from Kenya, dosent that disqualefy me from being presedent?"
Michele Obame give him a wink and hold her index finger up to her mouthe. "Shhh." Then the whoale family LOL, theyre face's iluminated by the red glow of candelabra encrust with diamend skull's carved into it resting in the center of the tabel providing the only lite in the room.
From the third installment of this at the Gawker. I got tipped from Riggs. I HIGHLY recommend all Reasonoids read it. If you're MAN enough (TIWTANFL).
I had no idea Rachel Jeantel had literary aspirations.
I laughed at this. Truly.
Does President Obama Know What In Hell the NSA Is Up To?
I see an opportunity to parody a song by the band Chicago, but I don't have the time. Nor do I really care.
So, it looks like CA is dipping into the fascism well again
http://arstechnica.com/tech-po.....e-program/
Countdown to this being hacked and scripts thrown up on the web to fuck with your annoying neighbors or the guy driving 55 in the fast ...wait no, I really like this idea! LET'S DO IT.
New York mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio leads the way forward for economic liberalism
Bill de Blasio, a former Brooklyn City Councilman who ascended to the job of public advocate, made a campaign bet that enough was finally enough. He has made economic inequality?a "tale of two cities," as he calls it?the centerpiece of his campaign. His most significant proposal, a slight tax hike on incomes above $500,000 to pay for citywide pre-kindergarten classes and after-school programs, is a near-perfect expression of the kind of sensible public policy that most Democrats have feared to propose in recent years, lest they be labeled "tax-and-spend liberals."
[...]
And so the scare tactics have only just begun. Wolfson warns of the potential flight of the wealthy from the city, which he asserts is "already the highest-taxed jurisdiction at the high end in the country?. You can raise the price, and people could decide it's not worth it anymore." But in fact, there is virtually no social scientific research to support this oft-heard prediction. And the city's progressive public campaign-financing system prevents the kind of carpet-bombing operations conducted by Koch brothers? and Sheldon Adelson?funded groups elsewhere in the country.
There's a shit-ton of delusion in this piece. But hey, at least libertarians got a shout-out.
Except for, ya know John Kerry docking his yacht in RI to avoid MA taxes, or people moving to FL or TX and saying its because of low or no taxes, or the entire state of California leaving for greener tax pastures...
And then there is this:
One last point: de Blasio's surge in the polls almost perfectly coincided with the endorsement of Quinn by the city's three major daily newspapers, especially the Times. This is yet another data point for an argument I've been making for decades now: daily newspapers should cut it out with candidate endorsements. Nobody cares, and it only confuses consumers who make no distinction between the news and editorial pages. The latter tend to endorse Democratic candidates; the former prefer to torture them, just to prove their independence (and in response to the constant "working of the refs" by hard-right pressure groups). Lose the endorsements and let reporters and, um, columnists tell the truth as they see it without this pointless and pretentious monkey on their respective backs.
What exactly is he saying here?
That the media is biased against Democrats?
"And the city's progressive public campaign-financing system prevents the kind of carpet-bombing operations conducted by Koch brothers? and Sheldon Adelson?funded groups elsewhere in the country."
Yeah, it's not like New York has ever elected a multibillion dollar media tycoon or anything
Bloomberg ran a progressive public campaign, it'scompletely different.
If it wasn't for their progressive public campaign system, how would rich media tycoons have access to the money and publicity they need to get elected?
The Left Wing Tides Foundation spends 5 times as much as the Kochs.
I like that the Nation mentions libertarian billionaires like the Kochs and a neocon billionaire like Adelson and just pretends that left-wing groups don't do the exact same thing.
Or that the Rockefeller in Congress is a progressive D.
Plus, everyone knows the Kochs aren't even real libertarians.
You can't be a libertarian now if you don't like Ron Paul? Okay, Lew.
But don't call it a personality cult!
David Koch said something interesting last year when the shit was going down at Cato that makes me think he and Rothbard remained friends even after his split with Cato. I wished I could still find it, the talk was even linked here I believe, or Wenzel's site
BTW, say whatever you want about Lew, he even deserves a good deal of it, but a lot of good libertarians spent their formative years ironing out their philosophy at the Mises Institute. After Lew is gone I expect it will still be a useful cornerstone of the movement.
I think LvMI itself is great. The LRC blog however... unhinged is a good word for it.
There has never been a single bit of evidence that showed pre K education to have any lasting effect on kids. Bit liberals cling to it still. They are fucking irrational nuts who believie in a disgracefully stupid and dangerous religion.
Makes sense that Obama learns all about the doings of his administration through the newspaper, Obama didn't even know he was running for President until he read the paper!
You guys are going to make me work OT on a Friday aren't you
That'd be great.
Any Jay Cutler fans/haters here?

D.C. Comics refuses to allow lesbian superhero Batwoman get married to her girlfriend
J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman have announced they'll be leaving as the editorial team on Batwoman, citing DC's editorial interference and in particular, the publisher's refusal to allow characters Kate Kane/Batwoman and her partner Gotham City police officer Maggie Sawyer marry each other.
That's right, while Batwoman has proposed to Maggie twice ? twice on panel ? DC not only refused to let the wedding be depicted on panel, but refused to let them be married at all. "[We] were told emphatically no marriage can result," said Williams on Twitter. He later added it was "was never put to us as being anti-gay marriage." Although how refusing to let people marry ? even fictional characters ? is not anti-gay marriage is beyond me.
I dunno, I doubt any marriage would last given how loose continuity is in comics.
I thought I read someplace else that they didn't mind if it was off panel. Apparently corporate kept trying to take their story in different directions on a number of things, often times at the last minute after more than a year of planning on some of the arcs.
And to think: I was sure that there was no way to make reading Batwoman comics more pathetic than it already is.
Congratulations, io9. Maybe next you could complain about the new Doctor Who not being a woman.
I don't read comics, but according to Wikipedia the Batwoman is gay and Jewish. To quote Mallory Archer, she's a diversity double whammy!
"Immigrants! That's how they do, y'know. Just drive around, listening to raps and shooting all the jobs."
I don't read comics, but I understand that Batwoman is also female, so it's a triple whammy!
How about the girl from Precious as the new Doctor Who?
What about Summer Glau?
Yeah, marrying comic characters is fucking stupid. Of course it has to be anti gay bigotry it can't be that it's fucking stupid.
It would just be boring. I mean I can't imagine they'd ever harm a lesbian couple because of the outrage that would ensue since violence against LGBT is a hot-button issue.
So there goes the suspense and it would impede the development of interesting and tragic stories.
So there goes the suspense and it would impede the development of interesting and tragic stories.
I think they deported the gay Canadian superhero Northstar in X-Men.
I think everyone's ok with that though because Canadians can walk among us without us knowing. THEY LOOK JUST LIKE US, but ever so slightly paler. We should probably deport them all, for the children of course.
Aren't there other gay X-Men?
You mean a group of people who pass for "normal" in their day to day lives hiding that they're different from the bulk of the population? They all seem quite good at finding each other.
Wikipedia: gay and bisexual characters include Anole, Bling!, Destiny, Karma, Mystique, Courier, Northstar (whose marriage was depicted in the comics in 2012), Graymalkin, Rictor, Shatterstar and the Ultimate version of Colossus.
Hell of a lot of completely minor characters there.
Apparently Gambit does make out with a male friend of his who is currently shape-shifted into a woman saying he "wants to keep everyone on their toes"
All the X-Men are gay. Well, metaphorically. And using the term to cover the whole LGTBBQWTF spectrum.
I think they deported the gay Canadian superhero Northstar in X-Men.
C'mon Jesse...they're not like us....not normal...
Filthy Canadians!
I think everyone's ok with that though because Canadians can walk among us without us knowing.
At least until they open their mouths, eh?
What are you talking aboot?
"I'm from Canada. They think I'm slow, eh?"
Soorry, what was that?
You know, I'm just gonna take my toque and go.
If they really wanted to be transgressive and outr?, they'd have polygamous characters.
There's a ban on marriage in general by corporate at DC. I don't know their reasoning, but I would do the same. Comic books are suppose to be entertaining, marriages lead to soap opera drama which is what you want to avoid when you are dealing with action oriented super heroes. There is way too much of that in X-Men already, and its a convoluted mess that reached its saturation point of new readers years ago when it became impossible to sort through the on going drama by picking up one issue and reading it.
These people thought they could convince Iran to support stacking Syria. They are dangerously stupid.
http://twitchy.com/2013/09/06/.....nst-syria/
You know, this is the sort of shit you expect high school kids to do at a Model UN.
If the Alawites are gassing Sunnis, the Iranian clerics are going to be fucking thrilled that the Sunnis are on the receiving end of poison gas for a change.
To be fair to BO, no person in charge of a large organization is going to know every little thing that people in the lower levels of the organization are doing.
It's like expecting the CEO of McDonalds to know that the night manager at the East Bumfuck, Idaho restaurant is closing 10 minutes early.
An no. The NSA and the intel community as a whole is a big deal. Making sure it doesn't violate Americans rights is a pretty important responsibility.
Yeah, and I wouldn't say someone like the Director of the NSA or the CIA or the AG is the equivalent of the McD's night manager more like your board of directors is out doing whatever they want with company money.
There are tens of thousands of people working at Ft Meade, and these actions could easily have been perpetrated by people at the bottom rung of the ladder.
Now, should those people have that ability? That's a diff question.
Context matters - and in this context, with revelations coming out about NSA spying on things that piss everyone off for months - and he still needs to investigate exactly what they're doing?
The analogy to CEO isn't bad - to get it closer though, it's more like a CEO was told by press reports that one of his VPs was stealing company funds and used it to buy his vacation house.
Then after months of other stories about the same thing, the CEO in an interview is asked if what he thinks about the VP using company funds to buy his Buggati and the CEO says "I can't know everything! I still have to investigate!"
IE - sure, the CEO cannot know everything, but after being told for months of major problems with a specific government entity and he still needs to "investigate" is an absolute dereliction of duty.
Not that it's his first, nor is it likely to be his last, but there is absolutely no defense for the president needing to still investigate the NSA.
"Welcome to the NSA, Fred. Good to have you with us. We really have only one rule here. See that giant 'Violate the Constitution' button? That beautiful shiny button? That jolly candy-like button? Don't touch it, okay? Pinky swear? Great, orientation over, see you later!"
The intelligence community is a big deal; whether a person in a random third-world country is being spied upon by it is not.
BO has never cared about protecting our rights (if indeed there be a right that these programs violate).
Seriously, Tulpa? It's seems to me it would be a big diplomatic problem if leaders of Brazil, Mexico, and other states are being spied upon. I'm the State Dept. is thrilled (not that the State Dept. is a favorite of mine, but...) and that a lot of high-level politicians that deal with foreign leaders on a regular basis are appalled. This is a rare and short-sighted comment on your end.
To be fair to BO, the person in charge might legitimately know there's a problem the first time its pointed out to him, but not the third or fourth separate report of a major clusterfuck/massive over-reach happens.
His problem is that he doesn't want to take responsibility for basically telling the NSA that what they're doing is cool with him. He doesn't want to have to deal with the consequences of making an unpopular policy decision and doesn't want to go through the effort to reign in the NSA.
He just seems to want to collect his $400k a year and enjoy his vacations.
Should be might legitimately *not* know
No argument there.
BO is just a guy who likes to give speeches, feel important, and live luxuriously. I don't see anything particularly evil in his character, once you get past the lack of interest in the effects of his actions. If he weren't in a position of power, we would laugh at his banality like we laugh at that of Paris Hilton or Terrell Owens.
Now, the people who advise him -- that's a collection of monsters the world has rarely seen.
Also his apparent lack of interest in actually running the US government.
But the case is rather like being the CEO of McDonald's and not knowing that the focus was no longer burger, fries and a shake, but rather won-tons and tea, or in this case, soylent green and water.
It's like expecting the CEO of McDonalds to appoint people who will enforce the sexual harassment policy at their franchises, and let him know if there a case of employee back-room gang-rape about to blow up in his face.

Could the USMNT try not giving up two goals in the first ten minutes for once?
Fuck fuck fuckity fuck.
The Unusually Sartorial Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Ah, a philistine who doesn't like the beautiful game.
No, not an adherent. I prefer the beautiful ballet of violence that is the NFL.
If Rollerball were an actual sport I'd probably watch that as well.
It's possible to like more than one sport.
I like the NFL, and tennis, too.
Soccer has just not ever down it for me.
Though I'm not one to knock sports I don't watch.
I like ALL of the sports....baseball, basketball, football and MMA.
Sweden, France, and Ukraine are on the bubble after today's matches.
France were always going to finish second to Spain in that group.
Sweden moved up into second by coming from a goal behind at Southern Ireland.
Ukraine have a game in hand on Montengro. And if they can beat England at home on Tuesday, then it's England on the bubble.
A World Cup without England? Dare I dream?
Didn't England fail to qualify for USA '94?
They did indeed fail to qualify.
Dear God, what are you prattling on about. As if sports aren't gay enough, you choose to watch the gayest sport since gay came to gaytown.
Soccer is at the root of the downfall of civilization!
I'm so ashamed that you guys are associated with H&R right now. You make the world a worse place to live in.
OH, THE HUMANITY!
They just don't want to keep score. And if someone tries to keep score, then, no ball, either.
you choose to watch the gayest sport since gay came to gaytown.
That would be figure skating.
Finger painting?
Baseball
Fuck you
you choose to watch the gayest sport since gay came to gaytown.
Yeah, You're all wrong.
And Mexico, at home, give up two goals to Honduras!
Now if Panama can score against 10-man Jamaica....
At least with Panama's goalless draw, the US are almost assured of going through with two games left if they beat Mexico on Tuesday.
To miss out, Panama would have to win twice on the road, the US would have to lose at home to Jamaica, and Honduras would have to lose to Panama but win its other two games -- and all that would only put the US into the playoff.
Locked down Debian installation is underway. Install goes much faster on an SSD. I think this system will be good when complete. Anyone messed with google two-factor auth app and PAM lib? Right now I'm leaning towards putting my ssh cert on a USB key, with a passphrase.
Kind of tempted to try the two-factor setup, as well, but there was just a major problem with the google two-factor app.
Latest NSA crypto revelations have me seriously paranoid.
wow Friday nights at your house rule!
*ouch*
I didn't know you could use PAM on your computer.
did you know if you heat a can of PAM too much, it will pop up a safety part that vents the contents? And if it's hot enough, it'll catch fire?
It's quite spectacular.
Pam....

...once.
In other words, he doesn't think it's a big enough deal to assign one of his many employees to dig into it and tell him what's going on. Any Executive in a business or government worth his salt who finds out about a problem in hos organization basically immedially delegates a rep or team to investigate. If the issue is big enough he demands daily updates. He checks to make sure the team is giving him all the info and he demands to have the answers on schedule or if that's not possible, to have a credible schedule.
What Obama's saying here is that he doesn't care, just wants this all to go away, and will not investigate it. Want to know why you have to read about this in the papers, Mr. Obama? It's because you are shirking your responsibility in this matter.
Tulpa disagrees
Maybe he can put Cass Sunstein on a panel to investigate. Good old Cass will get to the bottom of it.
SoCon Issue of the Week: The Evils of Gambling
-Focus on the Family opposes all forms of legalized gambling for both moral and pragmatic reasons. We believe the net societal effect of our government's embrace of gambling has been disastrous.
Gambling is driven by and subsists on greed. For this reason, the activity is morally bankrupt from its very foundation. Gambling is also an activity which exploits the vulnerable ? the young, the old and those susceptible to addictive behaviors. Further, gambling entices the financially disadvantaged classes with the unrealistic hope of escape from poverty through instant riches ? thus, ultimately worsening the plight of our poorest citizens. Also, gambling undermines the work ethic. It is based on the premise of "something for nothing," a concept that sanctions idleness rather than industriousness, slothfulness instead of initiative.
http://www.focusonthefamily.co.....ition.aspx
Gambling creates a ton of social problems. I wouldn't call their concern about it unfounded. And gambling is not just legal. It is run by the government and the government actually advertises and tells people what a great deal the numbers racket is. Meanwhile the government sends out police to shut down internet gaming and private gambling to enforce their or one of their crony's monopoly.
If gambling could be actually legal, meaning anyone could do it any time, I would support that. But we don't have legalized gambling. We have government sponsored gambling in the form of government run numbers rackets and government enforced monopolies. And that to me is the worst of all worlds. All of the social problems of legalized gambling with little of the freedom and all of the corruption that goes along with prohibition.
Leave the SOCONS alone on this one. They make more sense than the government does.
Why should we leave them alone for wanting to force their own will on others at gunpoint?
Because the government is worse. At least the SOCONS are consistent. The government thinks gambling is bad, unless they or one of their cronies is running the tables.
Yeah, and like you say, they advertise it with public money. It's like states with ABC stores taking out ads about how whiskey helps girls put out and cures your depression.
From mlg's link last night:
UN Working Group of Experts of People of African Descent.
Who comes up with this ridiculous shit? Titles like that are so over the top. Who made you experts? Yourselves? Not to mention that all humans are of african descent.
The same sort of people who thought they could convince Iran to turn on Syria over gassing people. In short, really stupid people come up with this shit.
Labor gets their asses kicked in Australia.
"SYDNEY/CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's conservative leader Tony Abbott swept into office in national elections on Saturday as voters punished the outgoing Labor government for six years of turbulent rule and for failing to maximize the benefits of a now fading mining boom.
Abbott, a former boxer, Rhodes scholar and trainee priest, promised to restore political stability, cut taxes and crack down on asylum seekers arriving by boat.
"From today I declare that Australia is under new management and Australia is once more open for business," Abbott told jubilant supporters in Sydney."
Man, if there's some hope for Australia, maybe by some small chance there's still a glimmer of hope for America as well.
Boxer, Rhodes scholar, trainee priest, that guy has lived a hell of a life.

Even super douchebag Ezra Klein admits the economy is horrible. But don't worry, it is all the rethuglicans fault for not spending more money and the Feds fault for not printing more. The patient is still not responding, let Ezra attach a few more leeches.
You have a counter proposal or are you just going to call people names?
Repeal Obamacare and hiring will start to pick up in earnest. I mean full time hiring, not this 29.5 hour a week bullshit that you assholes have created.
How?
Sorry, I'm not an Indian.
How? You stupid shithead!
ObamaCare fines companies with more than fifty employees thousands of dollars a year for every new employee they hire.
The counter-proposal is deregulate and let people start/expand businesses without having to deal with a fucking maze of red tape.
People WANT to make stuff and earn a living. LET THEM.
Oh, is that the real problem causing unemployment in this country? Care to link to evidence?
It's called the Federal Register.
http://finance.townhall.com/co...../page/full
If government jobs had remained flat instead of declining, unemployment would be below 7% by now.
It's people actively working to destroy jobs that is destroying jobs.
I'm not talking about jobs. I'm talking about people producing useful stuff.
A bunch of people pushing paper on the federal payroll does not prosperity make.
Surely you must realize what a giant blind spot, thus a giant error in your thinking, it is to completely disregard the value of all government work. Taxes are not just money stolen from you. They pay for things that provide value.
It is to completely disregard the value of all government work.
Hazel didn't do that, you lying sack of shit.
Is the value of what they would be doing greater than the value of what could be produced with the same resources in the private sector?
Given that (1) there is a huge faction of Democrats who literally believe that "spending is spending" and the UI benefits stimulate the economy, AND that (2) markets are more efficient at allocating scare resources than goverments, the answer is likely to be a resounding NO.
"You have a counter proposal or are you just going to call people names?"
I think we should raise income taxes, and, thereby, make it more expensive for employers to hire unemployed people and pay them their take home pay.
What do you think we should do, you fucking retard?
"If government jobs had remained flat instead of declining, unemployment would be below 7% by now."
And we're supposed to believe that becasue you say so?
Oh, and whatever government jobs would have remained--do you have any idea where the money for those people's salaries comes from?
It comes out consumer discretionary income--out of the consumer's pockets! ...and when they don't have as much discretionary income to spend, do you know what that does to the economy? Do you know what that does to the unemployment rate?
No, because you're an ideologically rigid, moron.
The other place tax revenue comes from is out of the budgets of companies--you know, the ones you want to expand and hire more people, people with jobs that are actually productive and produce taxable profits?
You're such a fucking idiot, Tony. You make Progressives look even stupider than they are. Keep up the good work!
"You have a counter proposal or are you just going to call people names?"
Under the guise of ObamaCare, I think we should fine companies with more than fifty employees thousands of dollars a year for every new employee they hire.
What do you think we should do, Shithead?
"You have a counter proposal or are you just going to call people names?"
It's really hard to take anything you write seriously after reading your antisemitic argument in favor of the holocaust or your disgusting pro-segregation argument.
You're such an ignorant, disgusting, antisemitic scumbag, Tony.
So was there a big cocktail party last night and the Reason staff is all hung over?
You don't have to shout - jeez! Oh, my head...
Yes, that's a real cop-out of an answer.
When you are president of the United States, you might not know everything that low-level functionaries are doing, but that is a FACT OF REALITY that EVERY leader of a large organization has to deal with. Which is why you appoint people to lower level posts that you entrust to make sure the still-lower-level people are obeying the rules and relaying important information back up to you.
Do you see the CEO of BP out there going "Look I had NO IDEA those people on that oil rig were bypassing safety procedures. I'm finding it out from the press just like you!" ?
No, you see them saying "Apparently procedures were not followed, we're trying to find out why, and we're trying to figure out how to make sure it never happens again."
That's what I deal with on a daily basis in my job. When shit goes wrong, and the higher ups hear about it, they don't go around saying they had nothing to do with it any no idea it was happening. They have a bazillion FRBs and ERBs and get to the bottom of it, and then modify processes and procedures so it can't happen again.
Basically what Obama is doing is he's shirking responsibility for being in charge of the fucking US government. And he's the fucking President of it.
This is the US President basically saying he's not ultimately responsible for what the US government does.
It's even worse because he had a scheduled meeting about this very topic with the presidents of Mexico and Brazil, and he didn't even bother to find out what the score was--from his own NSA--before the meeting?
I'd think he was just bluffing if he hadn't done the same thing so many times in similar situations--as Anonymous Coward pointed out above.
http://reason.com/blog/2013/09.....nt_3988018
Certainly if he tells us he has no idea what's going on enough times, no one can fault us for starting to believe him.
Avoiding responsibilty and blaming others for everything is the only thing this jerk truly excels at.
It is funny how his joke...
The NSA really is the butt of his joke about them subscribing to all the newspapers...
He really is blaming the NSA for what he does, isn't he.
I have no idea what these people are doing. They just work for me.
I said that I would look into the allegations. I mean, part of the problem here is we get these through the press and then I've got to go back and find out what's going on with respect to these particular allegations
Now, I'm just spitballing here, but would misrepresenting one's qualifications for, and willingness to perform the day to day duties of, the Presidency be grounds for impeachment?
Cut him some slack, he's never been the President of anything else before. Not even the student council.
You can't expect him to know how to do his job.
Obama's been getting on the job training for five years, and he still doesn't know when to keep his stupid mouth shut.
Taxes are not just money stolen from you. They pay for things that provide value.
I await substantiation.
Whatever value it has, it sure as hell isn't commensurate with what it costs us.
So if a thief buys something that provides value, he's not a thief?
