Police Abuse

Sheriff Whose Cops are Out of Control and Shooting People and Dogs Needs You To Know: Sometimes Black People Commit Crimes Against White People

|

Escambia County, Florida, Sheriff David Morgan has presided lately over two stories of police misuse of their guns, one shooting a man 15 times in his own driveway, another killing two dogs in a house the police entered without good cause.

His reaction to media criticism, much of it coming from right here? Dahlia Lithwick at Slate notes, it's a bunch of disconnected anecdotes about black criminals. (The people whose home the cops invaded and killed their dogs were white, though the man they shot in his own driveway was black.)

From Lithwick's story:

This week Sheriff Morgan spoke at a weekly Rotary Club of Pensacola meeting and made it clear that the real victim of the racial injustice here is Sheriff David Morgan. You should watch it. It's a case study in grievance- and blame-shifting….

The substance of Morgan's argument is that the community must "address statistics for what they are and not inject race." Then he proceeds to inject race. And then he does it again…..

Morgan says that he is "hobbled by the law" and complains that he is unable to defend the actions of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office (which he is presumably now doing) because of pending investigations into the misconduct of his officers—a situation he likens, weirdly, to "allowing a deputy to handcuff you and beat you because you can't defend yourself." This is of course not far from what his officers allegedly did to the actual victims in these incidents….

at this point that Morgan pivots to argue that to achieve a real national dialogue on race, "those of you in the white community must overcome your fear of being labeled a racist. Because that's what we all fear in trying to open a dialogue with minority communities. It's when we enter that first juncture of the disagreement we will be called a racist.  Anybody want that label?"

Then Morgan loftily adds that we "must address those statistics for what they are, and not inject race," adding, "Last night we had four black male teenagers attacked a 77-year-old white man. Where was the public outrage in that?" He cites another attack in which "two black males and one black female brutally attacked a white female … beat her to death with a hammer and crowbar . . . where is the public outrage in that?"  Then he cites another execution-style murder by an armed black male against a white male.  Plus graphic crime scene details. None of these cases involves the police. They're just examples of vicious black-on-white crimes that presumably justify—what, exactly? Police brutality? Racial profiling? More warrantless searches? Morgan never exactly tells us what we are meant to conclude from all these allegedly neutral "statistics," …

  1. Just another martyr to political correctness!

“The people whose home the cops invaded and killed their dogs were white…”

So we should Have a Conversation about black crime! Makes sense.

  2. You should watch it. It’s a case study in grievance- and blame-shifting….

    A Democrat, then?

    1. Well, there is also a ton of projection in there, so…yes?

      1. Sheriff Thelbert “David” Morgan (R)

        1. You missed the point of the joke.

        2. D and R don’t mean the same thing in the rural south. The county I graduated from told every one to register democrat so they could vote in the primary in local elections because no republicans ran in that county. However almost no one in the county votes democrat at the national level. Some weird holdover from southern democrats but being socons.

        3. The point I was trying to make, and not very well, was that he is a cop. Grievance and blame shifting as well as projection is what they do, irrespective of party.

          1. He’s actually more of a business type, and has spent a lot of time re-organizing the escambia county police department according to ideals of the “new professionalism.”

            Meaning, a bunch of

  3. So at least we now know the identity of “American!”.

    1. That’s a winner.

  4. Why didn’t he just say “FYTW” or “Like the dog licking his balls, because I can!”?

    1. My dog tries to do that but then he remembers he doesn’t have any.

      1. Neither do cops.

  5. None of these cases involves the police. They’re just examples of vicious black-on-white crimes that presumably justify?what, exactly?

A paranoiac obsession with OFFICER SAFETY? Disarming the civilian population?

  6. a situation he likens, weirdly, to “allowing a deputy to handcuff you and beat you because you can’t defend yourself.” This is of course not far from what his officers allegedly did to the actual victims in these incidents….

If ever there was a case where a forcible blood draw was justified, this seem like it.

  7. College-aged support for libertarians and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) represents the United States’ “only hope” in politics, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange told Campus Reform early Friday morning.

Not sure if this is going to help RP, but there it is.

  8. Keeping whites scared and images of the stereotypical super nigga hyped up on cocaine or bath salts etc etc keeps the money flowing and the politicians off their backs. A conversation on race will never happen in this country because people from various bents and slants have a vested interest in keeping misinformation flowing. Now if you will excuse me I am going to enjoy some fried chicken.

    1. I never got that stereotype. Who doesn’t love fried chicken?

      1. (raises hand)

        1. We already knew you were a monster.

        2. ( in the style of Kyle broflaski) Really?

          1. I’m much more partial to chicken fried steak, to be honest. Chicken is the most boring meat since rabbit.

            1. That’s because you’ve never had steak fried rabbit, racist.

            2. To each his own. I thought fried chicken was universally loved, but then again I’ve never lived in the northeast or northwest.

            3. That is why the Chinese created so many delicious deserts with chicken.

And why do Americans prefer to say chicken fried steak instead of schnitzel? It’s a fun word, whereas the former is a train wreck of malaprops.

            4. Boneless breasts are pretty much a blank protein pallet, but proper chicken parts with bones and dark meat are a bit more interesting.

              1. Boneless breasts are pretty much a blank protein pallet, but proper chicken parts with bones and dark meat are a bit more interesting.

                Thighs FTW!

      2. Fried chicken as we know it is a West African recipe. There is no reason it should be anything but a point of cultural pride.

        1. I’d be proud of fried chicken. It’s fucking delicious.

    2. We really don’t need to be frightened by stereotypes, we all know which parts of town to stay out of – especially after dark. It’s so obvious that even talking about it is impolite.

  9. What is scary is that this guy seems completely irrational. If he had made a coherent but appalling argument that would be one thing. But he didn’t even do that. He seems to lack the ability to understand cause and effect and logical connection. That press conference is surreal. It is out of some surreal comedy

Sheriff why do your deputies keep beating and terrorizing people?

Answer “Don’t you understand the scourge of black on white crime?”

That doesn’t even make a bad argument.

    1. He pretty much seems to be Dunphy.

    2. Perhaps race baiting is the southern version of Yankee noun-verb-911-ism?

      1. Indeed, enlightened Northerners like Bloomberg never race-bait.

  10. So it’s OK for cops to shoot innocent people and their pets because those damned niggers keep attacking good white people.

    What a piece of shit.

    1. Yeah, that’s how I read his argument, too.

      “Because niggers!”

Maybe some of the outrage around Trayvon wasn’t so far-fetched after all.

  11. Escambia is the Lower Alabama part of FL.

    1. Please. It’s just FL.

      1. What? No way, dude. In Leon and several central florida counties the corrupt, racist sheriff is still a Democrat!

      2. The only part of North Florida that counts as Florida is Tallahassee. The rest is Alabama or Georgia.

        1. Lies. I was born in Duval and I refuse to be labeled a Georgian.

          1. Ted Turner does own Madison outright.

          2. Saint Johns County Ride or Die baby!!!!

        2. You can have all of Florida, south of Gainesville. No really, you can have it. Take it!

Calling west/panhandle Florida part of Alabama is actually a compliment.

  12. http://www.slate.com/blogs/bro…..white.html

Do you become annoyed anytime a person of color writes, tweets, sings, or speaks about racial inequality? Have you ever wondered why it’s culturally acceptable for black people to use “the n-word,” while no one else is supposed to use it? Have you ever used the word “postracial” without a trace of irony? Do you believe that the sole purpose of affirmative action is to allow less qualified minorities to take jobs and positions from the smarter and more qualified?

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then you should check out White Like Me

    1. But for some time he ignored the advantages he himself had as a white person?until a black audience member at a rally where he was speaking asked him what he had done to address racism here in the U.S.

Oh, good, a self-flagellator. I’ll get right to watching his movie.

      1. I really don’t get white privilege. Have any of these people ever been to a trailer park? Are you telling me the only thing that keeps those people in abject poverty is that they choose not to flash their white privilege card and become CEO of a Fortune 500 company tomorrow.

        1. I keep waiting for my White Privilege to come in the mail, but it never does.

          1. Fucking Post Office. Hold on, we’ll Fedex you another copy. Pretty soon it’ll be nothin’ but featherbeds and silk sheets.

          1. I’ll have to watch that later. I can’t watch videos at work

        2. But we got Americans with families that can’t even buy a meal
Ask a brother who’s been downsized if he’s getting any deal
Or a white boy bustin ass til they put him in his grave
He ain’t gotta be a black boy to be livin like a slave
Rich people have always stayed on top by dividing white people from colored people
but white people got more in common with colored people then they do with rich people
          we just gotta eliminate them.
White people, black people, brown people, yellow people, get rid of ’em all
All we need is a voluntary, free spirited, open-ended program of procreative racial deconstruction
Everybody just gotta keep fuckin’ everybody til they’re all the same color

          1. KEEP ON LIVIN IN THE FREE WORLD

          2. But… diversity?

        3. “Whites go to Harvard while Blacks go to prison”

And the “tuition” is the same!

          1. One turns you into a blathering retard and the other one is prison.

        4. I hear what you’re saying but as someone who committed multiple crimes as a juvenile(and grew up in a trailer park!), I know full well that my life would have taken a different turn if I wasn’t a cute white kid. I doubt there are a lot of black kids who got to be treated as a first offender for their first 3 offenses. I really doubt there are many black felons under 18(for grand theft even) that managed to escape juvenile hall.

      2. He should have asked for an example of current systemic institutionalized racism here is the U.S.

    2. Why the hell do you people read Slate? Don’t you have better things to do with your minds? Like maybe slamming them over and over again into a cinderblock wall?

      1. Dude, you’re asking this question to a crowd that posts endless links to Jezebel and Feministing and Marcotte every PM Links. And presumably, they read that shit first. There is a masochism present in them that even NutraSweet cannot fathom.

        1. It’s either Marcotte or you two, and I don’t wanna derp myself down that much.

          1. That’s probably wise.

    3. Also at Slate:

A takedown of the cleveland newspapers that fired reporters but keep doing softball reviews of chain restaurants. This must be a midwest thing, I’ve never seen a restaurant get a bad review in pittsburgh and often see reviews for chains.

      1. First, Pittsburgh only wishes it was in the Midwest. You live in the capital of Appalachia, brah.

Second, while the Plain Dealer is truly awful, this dude’s complaint is that the restaurant reviews are pandering to the stupid proles. Of course it caters to fat, poor, stupid, blue-collar slobs; who the fuck do you think lives here? Fuck off back to New York City, nancy-boy.

        1. Fuck, at least do a diner, a pizza shop or something. It’s like doing a review of Starbucks. Just doesn’t make any fucking sense. And if you’re gonna review it, review it; don’t just reiterate the menu and make nummy sounds like an infant. Get them to pay for their advertising.

And the nancy boys are the editors without the balls to publish anything mean about a potential advertiser. I remember one review in p-burgh where the reviewer had a rude waitress, was forgotten for an hour, and his food was dry and cold… He couldn’t summon the testicular fortitude to say the place was terrible. He was making fucking excuses for it like a beaten woman, “I’m sure they were just really stressed at the new opening blah blah”

          1. Was this the Post-Gazette or the Tribune-Review? Cleveland doesn’t even have the luxury of competing terrible papers.

            1. Pretty sure it was the PG.

I used to read the paper everyday before it got busy when I worked in a restaurant. I’d read whatever someone had left there, so it could have been either of the two, or even the City Paper local hipster rag.

Funny thing was that a week or two after you got your review, an “account executive” (cute 21 year old girl with a fresh marketing degree) would come in to sell advertising. It’s a fucking scam.

  13. Do you believe that the sole purpose of affirmative action is to allow less qualified minorities to take jobs and positions from the smarter and more qualified?

Is this some sort of trick question?

  14. Some people just don’t know when it’s much, much better for them to just shut the fuck up.

    1. “Some men you just can’t reach.”

    2. A lack of self and situational awareness is often bad for a career, although I do find it amusing to watch.

  15. As someone who only moved away from Pensacola 18 months ago, the funny part of this story is that David Morgan was the reform candidate for sheriff when he beat the hilariously corrupt longtime Escambia sheriff Ron McNesby in 2008. Morgan wasn’t from Pensacola, wasn’t part of the Pcola old-boy network (which is incestuous and sufficating as hell) and had never worked as a civilian cop (is a retired Air Force MP), so he was supposed to be a breath of fresh air as sheriff.

All of Floribama has some really rotten law enforcement. The Okaloosa County sheriff got a long stretch in federal prison for fraud and embezzlement a few years back, and I remember reading a few stories in HnR a while back about some out-of-control cop in Crestview. None of it surprises me – I’m no cosmotarian but the whole region is a fucking armpit.

    1. It’s like John said in another thread: Bureaucracies pull people in an assimilate them. Do you think any of the old boys really thought a bew guy without the machiavellian experience of pensacola politics was gonna really shake things up? Hell, a reformer just gives them all that much more cover.

You really have to burn these corrupt organizations down and start from scratch.

  16. As a former resident of Mr. Morgan’s constituency, I must tell you that I am amazed at the Rotary Club Speech. While I agree with his theories on things, the bottom line is Morgan’s action do not follow his words. While he speaks of wanting one justice across the board, I can give you numerous examples where he has manipulated justice for his “good ole boys”, where he has overlooked justice in the name of an arrest, halted all common sense for his buddies. That is not justice across the board.

As long as there is an elitist group with the power over the rest, not necessarily racially, their is injustice. If you are one of Morgan’s friends, you will not see justice in this town. When you have a sheriff that loves the media more than doing the right thing, you will not see justice in this town. As long as the “good ole boy” system stays in place, you will not see justice in this town. Somebody has to get mad enough to end the corruption. Will it be you?
