Progressive Dems Explain Why They Didn't #StandWithRand Against Drone Strikes

The Huffington Post's Luke Johnson and Sabrina Siddiqui asked a number of leading progressive Democrats in the Senate about their conspicuous absense during yesterday's epic filibuster orchestrated by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). With the exception of Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Senate Democrats were scarcer than hen's teeth (and Durbin didn't join the filibuster so much as ask questions about the killing of Osama bin Laden rather than engage questions about the rights of U.S. citizens).

Here are some of the saddest responses from exactly the sort of bleeding-heart Dems who say they care about executive-branch overreach, sticking up for the little guy, you name it:

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio): "I don't know, there's a lot of debates I don't join that I agree -- I've got stuff to do and was doing a lot of other things."…

photobucket.com

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt., who caucuses with the Ds): "I'm working right now on many, many, other issues."…

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.): "Everyone's got a lot of priorities and people are busy."…

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon): ""I'm not supporting blocking the opportunity for [up or down votes on presidential appointees]."…

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.): "We all were shocked Republicans were doing a real filibuster instead of a procedural filibuster."

translation of "i was busy with other things" = "i dont give a shit; if a democrat is in power, he can kill anyone he wants. if a republican is in power... human rights!!! children!! its how we roll"

  3. Irish   12 years ago

Yeah, and one of the two Democrats who showed up only did so to argue with Rand.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio): "I don't know, there's a lot of debates I don't join that I agree -- I've got stuff to do and was doing a lot of other things. Sorry your sister got blown up by that drone."...

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.): "Everyone's got a lot of priorities and people are busy. Sorry about your house getting blown up. Obama though it was a terrorist hideout"...

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.): "We all were shocked Republicans were doing a real filibuster instead of a procedural filibuster. Besides, if you don't want to get blown up by a drone, don't associate with terrorists. We can't exactly tell you our definition of terrorist, but don't be one."

    1. Loki   12 years ago

We can't exactly tell you our definition of terrorist, but don't be one.

I'm pretty sure their definition of terrorist goes something like this: "a person who believes that the government of the United States should be one of limited enumerated powers."

God Sherrod Brown is a shithead.

    1. Almanian!   12 years ago

YEah - he visited my shop when I was working in Cleveland. What an asshole.

You know who's the nicest politician I've EVER met? Fucking Dennis Kucinich. Dumber than a post - NICE guy.

Brown? Dumber than a post - THINKS he's really smart - and is a total fucking asshole.

Um...I forgot WHO in DC you were talking about again?

I really wished I had actually voted last time, just to vote against him.

John, Reason should hire you to write alt-text. That would be brilliant.

  6. The Immaculate Trouser   12 years ago

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.): "We all were shocked Republicans were doing a real filibuster instead of a procedural filibuster."

But I thought that all Republican filibusters were "real" and were crippling government! Jon Stewart told me so.

    1. Joe M   12 years ago

Stewart voiced support for the filibuster on his show last night.

      1. ThatSkepticGuy   12 years ago

That'll last until the next time he invites Obama on to the Daily Show for another oral sex session.

  7. Calvin Coolidge   12 years ago

They also asked Deb Wasserman-Schultz, who insisted that she had no idea what a Filibuster is, then stormed off because she thought it was something that the reporter had just made up.

    1. Loki   12 years ago

I'm not sure if you're joking or not.

      1. Tulpa (LAOL-PA)   12 years ago

There was an incident at a BO campaign rally where DWS claimed not to know about the drone program when a reporter asked about it, and eventually just walked away.

        1. GILMORE   12 years ago

that was a timeless moment of "bitchy partisan cunt", where she effectively pretended the words the reporter used were in swahili

          1. Proprietist   12 years ago

I'm sorry, my earpiece is cutting out and I can't make out your question. How about we try again some other day?

Look we're all very busy okay? We can't be expected to dwell on procedural minutiae like Constitutionality or the possibility of the President murdering Americans from the sky. Our constituents elected us to sit on committees and enrich ourselves at public expense.

    1. Almanian!   12 years ago

We're doing THE PEOPLE'S WORK, goddamnit!

Now run along before someone comes along and drops a drone on YOU!

  10. Sigivald   12 years ago

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon): "I'm not supporting blocking the opportunity for [up or down votes on presidential appointees]."...

Well, in fairness to the Socialist piece of excrement that I'm saddled with as a Senator, he was against the filibuster before this one, so at least he's tolerably consistently for "just vote on things" - it's not like he came to that position because of Sen. Paul's actions.

Which is a stand I can respect, when one is consistent about it. (The filibuster is neither a travesty nor a brilliant thing in-and-of-itself; just a piece of old Senate Tradition.)

Merkley hasn't been in long enough to have had a chance to flip-flop over it when Democrats are in a minority, of course, so I'm qualifying this already minor praise even more by pointing out he hasn't had a chance to be a douche about it.

    1. Tulpa (LAOL-PA)   12 years ago

Problem is, all the Dem proposals for "filibuster reform" left the (extremely rare) talking filibuster in place. It was only the 60-vote-cloture rule that they wanted gone.

Now that the talking filibuster has been used against them, they are claiming they were against it all along.

    2. ?J?? de ?guila   12 years ago

He does deserve some praise for his vote against confirmation [is he up for election?], unlike the "pretending-to-care-progressive" Wyden (D-Oregon) who mouthed platitudes and then voted in favor [is he up for election?].

  11. Monty Crisco   12 years ago

Felt like I was watching the tea party Woodstock last night as I listened to Rand tick off every fucking thought about the ridiculous overreach of our government for the last few years... God, for a moment (actually, I listened for about two and a half hours) it was FUCKING WONDERFUL. To actually hear that shit on the Senate floor was just so... jarring. So unexpected. Like a bucket of ice water on your crotch... but in a good way!

    1. Calidissident   12 years ago

"Like a bucket of ice water on your crotch... but in a good way!"

      What?

      1. phandaal   12 years ago

You know. Like extra strength Gold Bond.

        1. Brandybuck   12 years ago

You know, there are times when a bucket of ice water on your crotch really hits the spot.

          1. GILMORE   12 years ago

tell me about it! its how my dad woke me up every morning until i was 16.

Ben Gay on the balls, however.... bad idea. great prank though! you can weaponize your enemies underwear! the laughs last as long as the screams of agony do.

            1. Sudden   12 years ago

You think Ben Gay on your balls is rough, you should try Gay Ben. He's gentle.

"Well we know drones will only be used to Hashishinate icky Tea Party types and their abominable offspring and also maybe a good number of the filthiest of the Occupy crowd -- oooh, picture this, a predator missile landing in the middle of a Tea Party rally, makes my progressive-congresswoman pussy wet, wet, wet --, but, ya know, they don't really count anyway."

"Nixon had his Kent State, Obama deserves his."

"We trust Barack Obama and Eric Holder to exercise good judgement while compiling the Kill List."

"Since any drone killing is done in secret, who would care, anyway? No one would know about it!"
