Former Sen. Alan Simpson Calls Rick Santorum "Rigid and Homophobic"
Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY) blasted Rick Santorum for being "rigid and homophobic." In an interview yesterday with Bob Schieffer for CBS News, Simpson said he was unnerved by Santorum's stance on gay rights:
He said, 'I want a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage,' and they said, 'Well, what about the people who are already married?' And he said, 'Well, they would be nullified.' I mean what is, what's human, what's kind about that? We're all human beings, we all know or love somebody who's gay or lesbian so what the hell is that about? To me it's startling and borders on disgust."
In a similar vein, Simpson criticized the social conservative wing of the Republican Party:
And here's a party that believes in government out of your life, the precious right of privacy, and the right to be left alone, how then can they be the hypocrisy of fiddling around in these social issues? We won't have a prayer.
Maybe Simpson is on to something. Last month, the Pew Research Center asked Americans what their "top policy priorities" were. Fiscal issues dominated that list. The economy and jobs were the top two concerns at 86 and 82 percent, while the deficit was fourth at 69 percent. (Terrorism was third.) Meanwhile, one of Santorum's favorite talking points, the "moral breakdown" of society, was far less of a concern. Only 44 percent of Americans were worried about moral issues. (It also doesn't help Santorum that LGBT rights are increasingly popular among Americans.)
Because the economy is so important, Simpson is supporting Romney, since he has a "good chance to be elected president, simply because people will vote against" Obama. Indeed, in a February 22 Quinnipiac poll, Romney was the only GOP candidate that beat Obama on handling the economy. (For whatever reason, Quinnipiac did not include a head-to-head between Obama and Rep. Ron Paul.) As for the other Republican candidates, Newt Gingrich "has too much baggage" and Simpson has no firm opinion about Ron Paul.
Simpson also had some harsh words against candidate purity, saying "I watch Republicans, they give each other the saliva test of purity, and then they lose and they bitch for four years."
In other LGBT/GOP news, the Republican governor of New Mexico (and dark horse vice presidential candidate), Susana Martinez, lost her openly gay hair stylist, who quit to protest Martinez's stance against same-sex marriage. Could this be the beginning of a gay Atlas Shrugged-style strike against looters and breeders?

"rigid and homophobic."
As opposed to "flaccid and homophobic?"
My neighbor just met a bisexual man on ---datebi*cOMit's where for men and women looking
for bisexual and bi-curious individuals to meet in a friendly and comfortable environment.
It's a nice place for the people who have the same sexual orientation.
For once, you're actually kind of on topic.
One must spread the honey......at least, as your post indicates, when it is due.
Maybe if he wasn't so homophobic, he could take care of his rigidity problem...
A friend of mine has been suggesting to me that social issues have not been Santorum's focus, but instead it's been put upon him by a media desperate to define the various candidates. Personally, I don't buy it but wonder if others here think there might be something to that.
I think Santorum defines conservative as primarily in social terms and, in turn, wants to define himself as the conservative of the bunch.
I would agree that the media has played it up more than is necessary based on his recent comments merit, but he staked his entire career before this presidential race on being very conservative on social issues.
Among his other issues, Santorum has an enormous problem letting anything go, and insists on trying to find clever formulations to technically win debates on issues by splitting hairs. He's actually quite intelligent and clever in coming up with dare I say jesuitical justifications for beliefs he holds.
No one actually really cares about that sort of thing, though, merely the end result.
So he's extremely easy to bait into continuing a losing argument. His own fault.
He's "joe"?
the media may be playing it up but it is Santorum himself who opens the door. Repeatedly. And what he says on social issues brims with hatred, intolerance, and outright disgust. I get that some folks oppose gay marriage or believe abortion to be murder, but this guy brings his own form of Taliban to the table.
I would agree that the media has played it up more than is necessary based on his recent comments merit
Nah, Santorum deserves to have his repugnant views aired even more -- the fact that he is the GOP frontrunner indicates his views on social issues haven't been publicized widely enough.
That's all that Rush talked about today.
My theory is that the contraception thing was a plan that worked WAY better than the President ever anticipated. But it still hasn't been thrust upon Ricky S.; he loves this stuff.
Here's a question for Rush and the other water-carriers for Ricky from PA: has it ever dawned on these guys that he was the last "conservative" standing for a reason? Here's a clue: it's because no one on the right supported him. Just look at what happened in the search for a conservative champion, an anti-Romney. Each effort failed.
By the IA cauci, all the was left for the fire-breathing right was Ricky from PA, teh LAST GUY they wanted to support, the guy they are now stuck with because folks like Rush and Hannity and Levin and even Beck are never going to admit that they are wrong.
It's not like his statements are being taken out of context, dude.
Well, he does occasionally provide the context of "But just because I think that it's morally wrong doesn't mean I'd make it illegal," but there are reasons many don't believe him on that.
My opinion, our nation's gays are too precious to subject to marriage.
I think there's something to the theory that the media and Santorum's opponents are playing up the social conservative stuff about him. However, it would be the elephant in the room if they didn't, since he's made it such a prominent part of his career. He's so far out on the ledge about this stuff that it can't be ignored.
I think that's right. He has avoided religious issues in past elections and hasn't been bringing them up in this one, except when asked. The problem is he is incapable of a non-answer, especially on issues he really cares deeply about, such as the sexual habits of gay people.
To be fair to the media, they may be baiting Santorum, but he's the one who keeps taking the hook.
'Santorum is rigid and homophobic'
this is news?
No.
Holy Shit OT: Nissan Leaf reports that, yeah, you'll probably have to replace those batteries in six to eight years. Cost: $31,000
http://hockeyschtick.blogspot......ry-on.html
That was always my fear with Hybrids. I'm still surprised that the first generation Priuses haven't hit something like this yet.
The first gen of Prius' were supposed to in theory, but the batteries were lasting longer than expected.
Also, because they're hybrids, it's possible (probable) that a lot of Prius batteries are ready for replacement, but the user just hasn't done it. They've just seen their mileage drop a bit.
Also, my understanding is the Prius use a different battery technology than the Leaf does.
Lastly, I believe that Toyota (as a gesture to its customers) offered some kind of cost-sharing thing on the battery replacement.
took about seven years before my civic hybrid's battery kicked the bucket.
Santorum is rigid and homophobic.
In other news, the sky is blue, water is wet, and bears shit in the woods. Amazingly, it's "news" when someone states something so obvious.
Amazingly, you see fit to comment on this nonnews.
Frankly, it was time for a new hairdresser anyway.
At least Simpson avoided references to "Snoopy Poop Dog and the Enema Man" this time.
Wait, is Santorum The Enema Man? Or does he just need one?
I'm sure there's a long line of people willing to stomp on the bag.
Let's not forget that Simpson is oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
FULL OF HIMSELF.
In my view, he is Obama / Mitt level phony.
Does anyone wish to consider that he made some statements a long time ago, early in a debate, which he might not actually agree with now, but for political reasons technical agreement is better than tacit flip-flopping, and that the only reason this has been transformed into 'he must be homophobic' is because he's actually starting to possibly win something (IE - might be a future threat)?
Disclaimer: I do not believe Santorum, and many others running, is fit to serve.
No. Also, your framing is bullshit.
